life imitates art anon and yeah you're absolutely correct about respecting the girls as real people sorry i didn't want to make the original ask super wordy so i didnt clarify that i meant like it's interesting/heartbreaking that their storyline as a commentary on the industry is proving to be so true. like in a way it almost sours the story, even tho i know it wasn't the girls writing it its just like. damn they did all that and it changed nothing in the end. even all along as theyre preforming this commentary on the industry in the bg the very company producing it is treating them in the exact same devious way. At the end of the day i am manifesting wins for the real life girls and maybe the fictional story of loona deserved to be killed anyways

If you want to read it one way, there is something depressing about how LOONA in real life weren't able to be the exception in the industry and ""save themselves"" as it were, despite being equipped with the knowledge of stuff like agency and freedom. But of course they were never going to. I think a lot of times people expect that "intelligent" women, especially ones whose bodies of work discuss feminism and independence, should be able to magically uninvolve themselves from misogynistic restrictions because well, "You're a smart girl, you should know better." But they don't and they can't, because that's the whole point of industry grooming. It is straight up cult like and no matter what themes are brought up in their work or how beautifully empowering the narrative was at times, nothing about the narrative could have ever helped the girls in real life. Which is sad. The only way to win the game is by not playing, and then I feel sad that they ever did.

The other way to look at it is how brilliant such an unresolved conclusion to their narrative this is. What better way to have a story about breaking free from convention and "getting off the track" than to have it end unfinished, in an entirely unsatisfying and UNCONSUMEABLE way, that leads to the members achieving their freedom and agency in real life. Nobody gets to profit off their story anymore. Isn't that actually really profound?

Definitely. I think the problem for helluva boss is that viv wants you to like these characters but uses the wrong stuff (sad backstories, telling instead of showing us their good traits, tone them down etc...) they show us that their suppose to be sympathetic/to root for and while she can still use them and it can work, it can also be cheap especially if the characters either don't change in the end or revert to the status quo the next time we see them. But even if they dont change or are still unlikable, you can still make them well liked by audiences and 'its always sunny in Philadelphia' is the perfect example of this. People dont like the characters because of their likability or sympathy, they like them because they embrace their unlikability. People tend to like characters embracing their unlikability than characters who are unlikeable that were suppose to like since we're meant to dislike that character so we can have fun with them and their terribleness. This is also one of the reasons people like alastor (like me) because him embracing his asshole self is fun to watch and its one of the reasons why people dislike stolas (also me included) because the show tend to excuse his actions, making it not so fun to watch him being terrible. So the always sunny approach wouldve suit helluva boss perfectly as you said, given that the entire plot is meant to be an episodic dark humoured show around these characters doing a hitman business in hell.

Although if the show is meant to change to a more serialised character driven show, it could use the 'bojack horseman' approach. Many people like bojack despite him being unlikable though the reason for this isnt because he embraces his unlikability, instead its for his more relatable/humane traits that were shown through the show (like the episode 'stupid piece of shit') and i can see that's one of the things viv tried to use especially when she said she watched the show before (making blitzo and stolas good fathers (stolas still fails at that unfortunately)) and the sad backstories given to blitzo, stolas, moxxie and loona. But the key element in bojack that isnt there in viv's work is the accountability. Even when fans of bojack excuse his actions, its not from the show because the show itself calls out bojack, it gives him longer term consequences for his actions. For example, lets compare stolas and octavia to bojack and hollyhock. When holly found out about the prom incident that happened from pete at the party, she decides to distance herself from bojack before finally cutting him out of her life from the disastrous 2nd interview. Its treated as a consequence to his actions and doesnt have holly get over it quickly and so does the other characters like todd who was the first to distance himself from bojack and remained that way despite bojack apologising. Now for stolas and octavia, when stolas apologises to octavia for the cheating incident, she forgives him pretty quickly. Even the 2nd time, she soon forgives him without even an apology, instead it was from loona whose speech was basically 'give him a break, he's trying'. It doesnt give stolas longer term consequences for him to grow, same with blitzo. We constantly see his sad backstory and his more good traits (being a good dad to loona) but we dont see him ever changing, we only see him being tone downed. Given that i mention todd and bojack, blitzo and moxxie have a similar relationship as well (where one 'friend' is the punching bag for the main character who doesnt want the 'friend' to leave because of abandonment issues) but the difference is that todd is allowed to distance himself from bojack despite how bojack would feel, its sad but its a part of his consequences that he can use to change. We dont get any of that for moxxie and blitzo, blitzo apologises and promised to be a better friend but we never see this progression which is a shame. And hell, even bojack changed more than both blitzo and stolas combined. Its slow for sure but the progress is there. We dont see that for blitzo and stolas however, because the accountability part isnt very present for them.

(Sorry for this being too long) My point is that if you want to make an episodic show around bad people, let them embrace their badness. If you want to make a serialised show around bad people, let them be held accountable.

2020 Comeback Ranking: April Update

this is all just my opinion, of course. im not ranking these in terms of what the objective bests are, im just ranking which ones i personally like the most

Dreamcatcher - Scream: it’s been like two and a half months but there’s still nothing else like this song. dreamcatcher are my favorite group, so my expectations were high, but they didnt just live up to my expectations, they fucking shattered them lmao. i hoped the song would be good but how on earth could i have seen this coming? seriously, this is on a whole new level, this is unprecedented. i’m not exactly sure if it’s my favorite dreamcatcher song overall, but i’m in love with and in awe of this direction for them, and it’s without a doubt my favorite song of the year. usually when i listen to a song for the first time, even if it’s a comeback i stayed up all night for, from a group i really like, my first reaction is usually sort of “woah, i need to listen to that again to make sense of it”, but i remember my first reaction to scream was like... i was stunned, lol. every detail of it is exactly right, they nailed every square inch of this shit. i dont expect anything will surpass it for me this year lol, except maybe another dreamcatcher song haha

Cignature - Nun Nu Nan Na: what a fucking debut, lol. this is everything you could possibly ask for from a girl group banger in 2020. this song is way too anthemic for this piece of shit year though haha. i love pretty much every second, every detail, about this song... it’s such a breath of fresh air. it’s so catchy and yet has the dirtiest, gnarliest industrial synths throughout it, which is right up my alley, it’s an easy way to win me over 

Elris - Jackpot: speaking of catchy songs with gnarly production.... yeah so i had this on my list when it came out, but i had more than 10 songs on that list and it was number like 12 or something, and then last month i also had it outside my top 10, but it occurred to me that actually i like pretty much every part of this song, and that definitely makes it one of the best of the year lol. like i noticed that i was listening to it way more than a lot of songs that i previously had higher than it, haha. there’s a reason for that.. it’s cause this song is good oh and their bside This Is Me is worth mentioning too. i’m not doing a ranking of bsides this month because im tired rn, but like, if this song was a title track then it would be just as high as jackpot, probably. this song’s got some real momentum, damn... it’s just so satisfying. the dance break in the bridge isnt my favorite, but it doesnt ruin the song for me, and ive gotten pretty used to it. everything else in the rest of the song is perfect though. literally... literally perfect. that’s not hyperbole.

Dreamcatcher - Endless Night: who the fuck else would ever even consider doing a song like this, let alone nail it like they have... this style of metal or jrock is so cheesy but who the fuck cares lmao this song beats ass and that’s all there is to it

Izone - Fiesta: i love izone’s luxury edm, it’s such a cool style. and like, this is probably their strongest example of that style so far. well, it might not be as “luxury” as LVER or Violeta, but it’s their strongest edm so far, i think. and this music video is nuts... and the choreo is one of the most visually satisfying of the year too... just all around one of the best comebacks so far. which is weird, cause this was supposed to come out in 2019 lmao... i wonder where i would have placed it on a 2019 year end list.... hmmm

Cignature - Assa: this song, holy shit... they’re making a goddamn name for themselves and i love it. theyre a force to be reckoned with. i personally prefer Nun Nu Nan Na, but i really had to think about it, lol. i know i put others in between NNNN and Assa here on this list, but these are all fairly even and close together, tbh. i love that this song shows a different side to cignature while using the general sound from NNNN, with some lyrics in common as well... it really is a “debut lead single b” huh? 

Loona - So What: i cant think of anything to say right now that hasnt already been said haha. you all know this song and have strong opinions (one way or the other) on this song lol, we’re all orbits here

GFriend - Crossroads: you know, i don’t listen to this song nearly as much as the others here, but every time i do i wonder why i dont listen to it more often. it’s hard to explain, i just really like it. it’s warm. but also sad. but not slow, it’s not a slow sad song... it’s a warm sad song with some momentum to it, and it really hits me sometimes. but seriously every time i go to make one of these lists, i look at my previous list and go “really? crossroads? ive only listened to this like twice in the last month, i’m definitely not including it this time”, but then i listen to it again just to be sure and i go “oh yeah, i forgot, this song is really good”

hmmm... i’m having trouble thinking of two more that definitely deserve to be the remaining spots in my top 10... i can think of a lot of songs i love, but either i dont feel quite *that* strongly about them right now (but might in future months, like how jackpot rose in my ranking just cause i was really feeling it this last month), or it’s something i think deserves to be in my top 10 but i just dont really have anything to say about it right now, you know? like maybe its something i think is great, but i havent been listening to it that much lately, not as much as previous months anyway. either way, there’s just a bunch of songs i feel like could go in the last two spots and there arent any two individual ones that i really feel like i have to put there above the others, so i’ll just list them here as honorable mentions lol

i love all of those, i highly recommend all of them, but i wouldn’t really know which two belong in the number 9 and 10 spots. my gut would say weki meki, pentagon, itzy, or nct, but obviously it cant be all four... and yeah, i’m just not sure. so i guess i only really have a clear top 8 this time around lol, that happens sometimes

anyway i know girl group rappers arent known to be as talented as boy group rappers, but i don’t really care. first off, boy group music tends to be more hiphop and rap based anyway. you have boy groups where half the members are the rap-line lol, whereas it’s kinda rare to find a girl group with more than one, and super rare to find one with more than two. but that’s okay, because girl group music tends to be focused around like edm and synthpop, and honestly some groups that have rappers really dont need them, and the rap breaks in some songs can feel really tacked on, like they just needed something for the rapper to do. 

however... i’ll say this... and i’ll say this despite being totally unqualified since i have only listened to a handful of boy groups (and even then, just a handful of songs from each, so not very extensively)............... partially because girl group music just encourages weirder concepts and sounds and partially because i just like girls a lot haha............... i think girl group rappers are more unique.

lmao that feels like a scorching hot take and i KNOW i won’t be able to defend it haha... but like... idk, i feel like a bunch of the boy groups ive checked out have a similar style when it comes to the rappers. obviously not every group, like BTS actually have some of the best rappers in the history of kpop, but i’m not talking about groups like BTS lol. they’re the exception to every rule. i’m talking about a lot of the other popular ones..... i’m not gonna name names though. but i havent gotten a really strong sense of personality when i listen to some boy group rappers and rap songs. if i get any sense of personality, it’s just kinda the same bravado and boastfulness that a lot of american rappers have, mixed with like “i’m so cool” and/or “i’m actually really sensitive and i love you but i cant bring myself to say it” lol idk haha. i’m not really talking about lyrics, by the way, i dont tend to look at lyrics much even with girl groups, i’m just talking about the way the lines are delivered. they give those impressions.

compare that with some of, in my opinion, the best girl group rappers in the current generation. i’ve heard that (g)i-dle’s soyeon is incredible but i dont listen to them (yet?) so I can’t say for sure... but the ones that stick out to me are CLC’s Yeeun, Weki Meki’s Yoojung, Gugudan’s Mina, Twice’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung, Dreamcatcher’s Dami, Loona’s Jinsoul and Gowon (gowon especially has a really unconventional style) etc. there’s a lot more good ones but these are just my favorites. 

a lot of them do the kinda high-voiced thing, kinda bratty, but i think nobody owns that like Yeeun. Yeeun’s got those mean-girl bad-bitch vibes, but with a merciless streak so you know she’s not just a cliquey popular girl, she’s a killer. Gugudan Mina is also high pitched in a kind of bratty way, but her flow on songs like Ice Chu is something I haven’t heard often in kpop. it’s really effortless, it just like.. flows haha, no pun intended. Yoojung is one of the most versatile kpop idols in general, and this applies to her rapping too. she can do boy group raps just as well as they can, look at her performances of HookGa lol, she apparently had very little time to work on that verse but her flow is, again, natural. I don’t know if I’d really call Gowon a full-time rapper, but her parts in One&Only are so interesting. she obviously has a very very high voice, but like, that’s just how she talks too haha that’s not something she puts on for effect. she also has a very melodic style... not just rhythm and basically rapping like youre just talking fast... she kind of sing-raps. to be honest, i didnt even realize that was rapping at first because of how melodic it is, but also because of how weird and ethereal and dissonant those parts of the song are (at 0:30 in the song, for instance). i love that style, it’s something you also see in the Japanese group Wednesday Campanella, in songs like Aladdin where it’s hard to tell whether or not you can even call what she’s doing most of the time “rapping” cause it doesnt sound like rapping typically does, but like by strict definition that’s what she’s doing haha. 

if you know some boy group rappers that are really unique lmk! i wanna be wrong about this lol. i love the different voices that all the good girl group rappers have, but i’ve never seen a boy group rapper who puts on a voice when he raps, i’ve never seen a kpop Danny Brown lol
