Oh this is a good one

I definitely forgot about some good scenes, bc it's been so fucking long since I read those earlier books, but these are the ones that immediately come to my mind plus some that I found going through my (many) bookmarks

(this got way too long so I'm putting it under a cut)

Starting with book one, though more as an honorary mention, we've got Chapter 15, The Torture Room. The reason I call it an honorary mention is bc it isn't an insanely good scene, just a pretty good one, but it is pretty much the scene that got me really hooked on this series. I also loved that it was written entirely in italics, I'd never seen that before in a book and it kinda scratched smth in my brain

The next one that I actually remember really making an impression on me is a couple books later, in book 4, also Chapter 15, Back on Cemetery Road, when Skulduggery almost shoots Staven Weeper for following him saying "I usually kill people who follow me" and "That's what happens. They hunt me, they die. Simple. I like to keep it simple. Keep it clean.". In my mind, that was like a huge thing. Bc people in always talked about how Skulduggery was brutal and dangerous and shit but for me this was the point where that really clicked for the first time, hearing it from his own mouth, actually witnessing it instead of being told about it.

There's another scene later in the book that had a similar effect but with China, Chapter 37 China's Dark Secret. It didn't hit quite the same way, bc we've already seen her be ruthless and more than shady before, but the reveal that she was the one led Skulduggery's family into death, plus her killing Crux without batting an eye immediately after, definitely got me good, too.

Next comes Death Bringer, book 6, Chapter 28, A Vile History. Yup, the Lord Vile reveal. I did not fucking see that coming. Never. Also huge Kudos to Tenebrae for how he built up that story, right up to the big reveal. And then of course Valkyrie's begging, the denial, all the while Skulduggery just goes more and more quiet, knowing what comes next. Fucking chills. I think I screamed.

Same book, follow up for China's reveal. Chapter 60, Tattletale. The thing that everyone was probably just waiting to happen, for China's secret to blow up in her face. Literally. It think that scene just has it all. China, beaten and helpless, while Scorn tells her (this is canon right) age-old love about the role she played in the death of his family. Also some sprinkles of Serpine mentioning, which is always a bonus for me. And then, when her whole life essentially gets blown to smithereens, Skulduggery just. Turns around and leaves. Wordlessly. I think that hurt the most.

Now, there's a lot of cool and funny moments in Kingdom of the Wicked, especially for a Serpine fanatic like me, but no real gut-punching, nerve-wracking shit that I can remember or find in my bookmarks, so I'll skip it.

Last Stand of Dead Men. Alright, you know what's coming. And out of all books, this one definitely takes the cake on the amount of bookmarks I've put in it. (At least excluding when I started marking every single scene for specific characters, bc those don't count. I mean bookmarks for the purpose of marking Good Scenes.) Surprisingly though, most of the stuff I've marked in this one is just funny shit. Because overall, this book is, actually, mostly funny. Up to a certain point at least. But I'm not gonna be so boring and put the golden eye plot twist in here, even though it 100% deserves to be here. No, we're gonna go one chapter past that.

Chapter 52, A Reasonable Reaction. Nothing like watching your brother kill two of your other brothers, eh? Seriously though. I think it might've been bc I hadn't really even processed Ghastly dying (sorry Anton) yet, but I feel witnessing the betrayal from an outsiders perspective hit even harder than first hand. I actually think it was a great choice to have Sanguine as the pov guy for this, bc you get that mostly detached view of things, of how the other characters each break down. And then of course, Skulduggery's finishing sentence, the answer to Saracen's question of what they're gonna do about Erskine and Mist now. "Oh, that," Pleasant said, putting his hat back on. "We kill them. We kill them all."

There's definitely more scenes from book eight that I could list now, but I think I won't. Just like I won't list any from book nine. Because pretty much from this point on, there's so many of them, back to back, that there's really no point to it. I'd just be listing every fucking chapter. I will however, mention the empty pages here. Although they weren't of course completely empty, but I like to call them that in my head. The way the words flowed down, broke off. That was fucking amazing. There's no chapter number for them, but I think y'all know what I mean.

Let's go into Phase Two!

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot here, bc I can't remember any really good scenes (only a couple of funny ones) from books ten and eleven, and I haven't read, twelve, so we're going straight to Seasons of War.

Similarly to Kingdom of the Wicked, Seasons of War was truly a feast for me, but for the purposes of this I'll go with two scenes that feature pretty much the same characters and premises. Sorry not sorry.

First we've got Chapter 79, when Skulduggery chops off Serpine's hand. That's. Huge when you think about it. It's the guy who killed him, his family, and the weapon that killed at least one of his closest friends (and a lot more, there's so much bad history here). So on one (haha) hand you've got that, you've got that little bit of vengeance, justice if you will, a brutal end to an atrocious piece of magic with a nice, personal touch and on the other one you've got the choice he's made here. Because, yes, there was a deal, and yes, even Dexter tells him he can't just let Solomon have Serpine (and presumably kill him, maybe some torture before that, who knows rlly) but realistically? Oh he absolutely can. He defnitely can. And I'm not sure if he himself even knows why he didn't, because the explanation he gives is very obviously dogshit, but for some reason he doesn't do it. So maybe, just maybe, this is Skulduggery having actually grown as a person. Although I do feel like in this situation, it would've been plenty easy to justify.

Building on that, Chapter 125. This one's short, just a single conversation really, and it's Skulduggery's debrief through China. This one hits hard because it's so swift, because Saracen's death is just a statistic here, just like Luke. And then we hear about Skulduggery's second mission, China's order to him, that he obviously has had to have agreed to beforehand - that being him killing Serpine once the main mission is over. And here we can go back into that earlier scene. Because now we don't just have the personal reasons he'd have to kill him, now we don't just have moral aspect that this person arguably deserves it, no, now we've got an actual order that has been made on this. And that moment, with Solomon, with the deal he poses, that would've been the perfect, the easist fucking way to get rid of him possible. Yeah sure, the mission wasn't done yet, but what are the other options? Could he have risked trying to murder Serpine in his sleep afterwards? How would he have explained that to the others? Or would he have had to resort to a full blown execution, bc any sort of secrecy is relly just pretense at that point? This. This was the moment, and he chose to let it pass. In a way, that debrief is another last chance thrown at him, China essentially telling him that it's not too late and hell, she'd probably be fine if he just shot Serpine on the open street, but once again, he chooses not to. We've had the growth in the previous scene, but now he's grown. Now it's settled. What a weird way to have this happen to that character though.

Haven't read Dead or Alive.

I would love to put some scenes from Until the End here, but I don't have a phsyical copy, so I can't look them up properly. I absolutely loved the scene when the world ended though, and then when it was remade. I talked about the "empty pages" in Dying of the Light, but this one had ACTUAL empty pages, and yeah, those got me good as well. I like stuff like that.

This marks the end of my list though, bc I also haven't read any of the newer books yet, and I've been sitting here looking up scenes for almost two hours and really gotta eat. I hope you enjoy my rambling though!!

One of my favourite details about the Feldspar subplot in Outer Wilds is that (in my experience) I always find Feldspar to be a little bit of an asshole compared to what I'd expect after hearing what the others around the village have to say about them. The rose-coloured glasses of grief and old legend have settled around their image back on Timber Hearth so much, and the person to be found on Dark Bramble isn't a disappointment in the afterglow of that, but they are a lot more three-dimensional. They're a little patronizing sometimes ("...You never were the brightest hatchling, were you?" isn't exactly the response I would give to an exclamation about myself being improbably still living), and listening to them talk about their own heroism is just slightly more offputting than when the villagers back home do it. There's still a genuine fire there, a strong love of exploration and an admirable boldness that leaves no question how their passion took this project to the stars...but they're a lot closer to a neighbour, when found, than a hero with a ten-foot-tall image. A neighbour who can be a little annoying sometimes, in spite of the laundry list of impressive things they've done. I like that a lot. I like that the grief smoothed them out too much, in the minds of the Hearthians, and that finding them living roughs that impression up just enough to be real again.
