Epic the musical and Supernatural mesh together so well, it's ridiculous -
Personally I've always imagined it as Cas trying to escape the empty to get back home to Dean, and he has to face a bunch of trials along the way, like confronting Circe (Rowena), finding the blind prophet (Pamela or Kevin), so on and so forth, meanwhile Dean and Jack are back on earth holding out hope he'll come back-
There's more but I don't wanna dump all this on ya' lol, I just saw you mention it in a post and saw an opportunity to give my 2 cents :p
-Jukebox 📼
Jukebox, look at me
I have a vision. I need to communicate telepathically
Remember the Demon Dean arc? Mark of Cain? All that carnage?
You know the Itheca Saga?
Imagine this:
Dean's been having his summer love with Crowley, when he hears word about demons going after Sam. Instead of being apathetic and dismissive, Dean looks into it only to find out that someone within Crowley's circle has somehow found an entrance to the bunker. A way to slip in.
And I want this to be at least two years since Dean disappeared.
He hears about what's happened to Sam, and his instincts to kill kick in. Like how he went after the Frankenstein family after they killed Charlie? Yeah, that energy, but with Sam, because that makes just as much sense. And honestly, if the show wanted more carnage, they should've started here, BUT ANYWAYS
Blah blah plot, that's too many details for me. Cut to the bunker, the demons are out hunting Sam, destroying the bunker room by room in the process
Cue the song "Hold Them Down" as the demons mock Crowley's fondness for the Winchesters and talk about how they will be the ones to take them down.
And just as it hits the last lyrics, the demons are in the library, absolutely desecrating ancient knowledge, an angel blade fucking launches into the back of one Demon's head and kills it
Cue the song "Odysseus" as Dean stands at the archway of the library, gun in one hand. The line "I have had enough" is said before Dean shoots at the ceiling, and the whole bunker goes dark for a second, the lights of the lamps flickering before it all goes out
Carnage
A full massacre happens as Dean hunts down every demon, closing off the bunker so no one can get in or out. Meanwhile, Sam tries to deal with the ones who were still after him. Even with a broken arm, he's holding his own, but they outnumber him
And I need Sam to watch as Dean lets the demon in his take over and protect his brother
After the chaos, we cue in "I Can't Help but Wonder" as Sam and Dean reunite. Fuck you, power of love and brotherhood WINS. I need Sam to just tell Dean how he never stopped trying to find him again, that he's not making the same mistake like when Dean got sent to purgatory. How he always hoped Dean would come home again.
Dean saying he's proud of Sam, that Sam grew into his own hunter, that he's been doing good, and that he did miss him, he just didn't want to come home a monster. But he's back now, and they hug, and it's sweet
And Sam says he has to go tell Cas
And then we cue to "Would You Fall in Love with Me Again"
Cas gets the call that Dean is back, as Cas was already driving back to the bunker when he got the SOS
The bunker door opens
Dean says Cas' name
And Cas can't help but stare as he walks down the stairs hesitantly. Cause he sees Dean's demon form, but he can still see remnants of his soul in there too
"Is it you? Have my prayers been answered?"
Cas is looking Dean over, trying to see past the demon while Dean gets a look at Cas' true form for the first time
Dean says he's not the righteous man Cas knew. That he's not the same man. That his sins run so much deeper now than ever before, and he's beyond who Cas can even consider a friend
Cas asks what he's done, and Dean just tells Cas about every regret and pain he's had. How he feels irredemable before he doesn't feel bad about everything he's done. How a part of him left and did it for his family's safety. And he asks Cas if he'd still take Dean back
words words that someone smarter and more literate than me will figure out
Cas tells (confesses) to Dean that he'll love him over and over again, no matter what. That he's still the same person. He'll always be Dean, and that Cas has been waiting for him to come home
Cinematic rotating shot of their POVs with Cas' true form and Dean's demon form wrapping around each other as their physical bodies hug, forehead to forehead
Dean "How long has it been?"
Cas "Too long"
And then Sam is waiting in the kitchen, waiting for them to finish
fuck this was badly written. No one read this

The writers of s11 were cowards. If IIIIIIIIIII was in charge I'd made Lucifer's weird obsession with Sam show up more. Like the writers have very obviously included it and yet when Lucifer is processing the same vessel as cas, and therefore pretending to be cas, he just fucks off and tortures Crowley with fucked up bdsm pet play.
Like the few times casifer and Sam interacted were GOLD. because Sam sees it as his best friend cas, and Lucifer (who keeps talking about Sam like they're toxic ex's) is pretending to be him!! Although not to well. Like his freaky smirk when sending Dean into the past and coming back to harass Sam? Dude lives off of sadistic pleasure.
The way he full on LAUGHS when Sam says he trusts him bc Sam thinks it's cas?? Like gold!?!? Don't know why the writers didn't do more with that.
Also why not do more with the 'lucifer sent Sam visions to get him down to hell'. Like Lucifer is Obsessed w/ sam because that body/vessel is "supposed to be" his. And yet after revealing himself he doesn't try and convince Sam anymore?
He's just given up? Like nah man I don't believe that. I feel like he woulda fucked with Sam more in cas' body. And like it woulda been a way better not-romance-romance plot then whatever the fuck Dean and Amara were..
Like that came outta no where... I mean I get it.. but ew?? We saw her grow up, and maybe id argue "well there were two versions of her!! One physical on earth, the other her actual form and memories as a celestial being!!" BUT NO. SHE CALLS CROWLEY UNCLE CROWLEY.
cause he like raised her for a day or wtv..
Idk s11 is better than s10. Like the episode from baby's prospective?? PEAK CINEMAAAA!! also not that I dislike s11, no I quite love it, I just wish the dean plots were more fleshed out, and that it was more "Dean and Sam vs the world!!" Then Dean vs Sam yk??
Like where's my dynamic duo??
That's part of why I didn't like s10. Like no I loved the IDEA of Mark of Cain dean, and demon dean was hilarious (although I HATE him) but it was just Dean vs Sam, Dean vs cas, Dean vs the world. And idk I liked the idea, cause this time it was sam doing everything to save Dean, but man I just didn't like the fighting..
Also s11 had a mention of TMNT, S10 did not so... points!!
S1 and 2 of spn were peak ofc, and s3 was good but not really memorable for me?? Idk I'll go back and rewatch once I finish the series (just finished s11)
S4 and 5 were also really good, we got Castiel who is peak, blood junkie Sam, which was one of my favorite plots!! And of course a lot more bobby. Rest in peace king!
And unlike some I loveeeed s6-7 like.. the soulless plot, and death? Dean dealing with soulless sam?? Chefs kiss I mean mwah. Then Sam tweaking because of hallucinations. NOT TO MENTION GODSTIEL?? loved him sm stg.
8-9-10 is where it kinda fell off. I mean idk the leviathans?? Weak. Hated them ngl. Idk if they were s7 but either way.. mid. I didn't like purgatory bc no way Sam would do that?? But I did like how it developed deans character..
I don't remember what happened in what season but I lovedddd kevin, hated metatron (but in the "it's because he's well done" kinda way), the tablets were aight, Mark of Cain was uh... something.. (I hate demon dean but he was peak..)
So like idk.. show is peak though, I'm just at that point in the hyperfixtion where it's like "BUT I COULD DO IT BETTER!!" ykwim?? NVM I'm sick with a fever, supernatural is all I have going for me man.

You are kidnapped by CW execs, hold on a gunpoint and asked to write a script for Supernatural season 16. What's gonna be the plot?
They don't even have to kidnap me to do this, I'd do it for free. I'd pay THEM to let me do it.
Dean and Sam are still stuck in one of Chuck's mindgames and that he has Jack stashed away somewhere. Dean poking at the walls parallel universes in SPNWN was the beginning of him figuring out that there's something amiss, and Jack's ooc behavior regarding it. Is like. The final nail in the coffin (no pun intended).
The first half of the season would be Dean and Sam splitting up in Heaven to connect with previous spn characters who have died. Sam finds Mary, Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Ash, and then has a sideplot where he runs into Jess and gets closure regarding that. Dean runs into Charlie, Victor, John, and Kevin (to name a few). I really really would love some satisfying conflict between Dean and John, and I would like Sam and Mary to actually Interact and have opinions about each other.
The end of the first arc is Dean finding Jack, so we can get some delicious interactions between the two of them (pls let Jack actually have a Reaction to Cas being dead), and so that they can go absolutely balls-to-the-wall crazy by agreeing to the same stupid, dangerous plan to open the Empty and get Cas back.
Anyway, part 2 of the season is the gang all getting together, dodging Chuck, who starts bringing Angels back to go after Dean and Sam. Dean tells Sam that the plan is to open the Empty and dump Chuck in there, but doesn't mention that he and Jack are also going to jump into the Empty to save Cas (bc Sam would stop him and also I love it when Dean lies to Sam's face). The plan goes stupid bc Sam figures out what's going on and all three of them end up in the Empty.
I don't have exactly any set ideas for how the rest of this happens, but I need them to interact with Crowley and I need Sam and Ruby interactions. Somehow they do a Chuck/Cas Empty swap and get Cas back. I would introduce a new mechanic that the only way to get Cas out of the Empty is to wake him up (the Empty actually gets him to sleep) and so they have to go through Cas's mind to wake him. Jack gets to use his powers and like beam Dean into Cas's mind and I get a self indulgent sexy recap of every single regret that Cas has ever had flashing in front of Dean's eyes.
Anyway something something Dean finds Cas in the barn where they met on earth, something something Cas tells him to leave him there and then obviously Dean gets to say "don't you think you deserve to be saved" and it's vomit inducing. Just as Castiel wakes up, so does the Empty and shit hits the fan.
Cas tries to play mr self sacrifice to get everyone out, but Dean won't let him bc he's sick of that shit. The portal Jack opened is closing, but last minute Dean grabs Cas and their soul/grace interact, recharging Cas back to full power and he flies them out.
Something something, Chuck gets chucked (lmao) into the Empty, something something, Michael/Adam was involved this season, something something either Michael, Amara, or whoever the fuck is in charge of Heaven and not Jack because he deserves to be a normal person without that insane responsibility.
Dean retires and opens a bar, Sam continues hunting and expands the hunter network (and Samwena canon bc istg 🔫), Cas and Jack dont hunt, dont not hunt, but do a secret third thing (commit funny felonies).
Also Destiel canon sex scene. If Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins can hump on stage in front of us, they can take their pants off for a pg-13 sex scene on my monster show.
That's the BROAD strokes of what I would want for a s16. If we're pretending that there are more seasons after s16, then all of that would go a little differently and I wouldn't have Dean quit hunting.
Alternative answer is that I'd submit Shal's s15 finale fix-it fic for a supernatural movie directed by Jensen Ackles.

Each week has a suggested theme, but you should also feel free to simply post something about the season that corresponds to the week (i.e. something about s3 during week 3), or honestly just post whatever you want, we won’t stop you.
Tag us with @spn20fest to make sure we see your contribution and we’ll reblog! We appreciate it if you can add some identifying tags as well, but otherwise we’ll do our best to make sure things are categorized properly.
This will get long, so please continue below the cut to see the prompts for each week!

I’m basically done with my classes so now I can post this late ranking for season 9. Continuing to stay positive, overall this season didn't really stick out to me compared to others. There were a few things holding it back but what the hell who cares.
What did stick out to me was the mark of Cain plot line. The episode "First Born" does such an amazing job at setting up the mark of Cain and it's parallels between Cain and Abel versus Sam and Dean. Oh I eat that shit up. I'm also guilty for some Sam and Cas quality moments. With the addition of an entertaining Crowley and Dean duo, which I didn’t know I needed. Too bad we don't get more focus on the mark of Cain arc this season (Which is why I'm happy it'll be set up for the next season rather than just going nowhere).
I loved exploring Castiel's relationship with humanity and the best example was the scene with the baby he was babysitting. It's one of his best moments in the show that encapsulates his best qualities and he has come such a long way since season 4. Him being human was such a great way to allow him to connect with humanity on a deeper level. I will say he’s much more passive this season but it makes sense after having so many losses at the cost of him gaining free will. Laying low would be the best move here and I’m glad they did it this way.
The angel storyline with Gadreel was not as memorable (or as well done in my opinion) as the mark of Cain plot line but I still found it interesting. Sam getting possessed by angel was NOT on my bingo card (I don’t know how I avoided spoilers for this). I’m surprised I haven’t thought about this concept before. I hope this isn’t a hot take but I really liked Gadreel. His backstory and motives expanded the lore of the angels in the show. I would have liked if it was explored in more detail but that’s just cause I find anything angel related really interesting. Metatron is pretty entertaining as a villain, not my favorite but he works pretty well here. Overall the one real gripe I have about it is that I wish the whole Gadreel arc didn't come at the expense of Dean's character. Also to the degree of Sam's character.
I do loathe the characterization of Dean this season (mostly just the beginning). I understand why his impulsiveness was pushed to a higher degree to further brotherly drama. To show how far Dean is willing to go for his brother especially as a stark contrast to season 8. However, I thought his build up of lies was a bit irritating. It's so painfully predictable how everything played out. Gadreel just going along with Metatron, (he does protest a bit but he was still too trusting for my liking) Dean digging his grave with really unbelievably stupid lies, Sam being super passive for no good reason and not questioning Dean whatsoever. Is it a crime to want more from these characters?? Okay that’s as negative as I’m getting here.
The last episode was good though, we needed that scene with Dean dying in Sam's arms (I'm not okay) to tip the scales on their relationship for the next season. That's also something that has grown a bit predictable. If Dean goes over the line then Sam has to go over the line. But I'm honestly too invested with the mark of Cain and the concept of demon Dean to care about that right now. When I was watching the earlier seasons I heard about this arc and I have been waiting to get some much needed focus on Dean (I've been yearning for this since Dean came back from hell).
Also Kevin is done dirty in this show, free him from this hell let him rest for good.
I’ll continue to keep an open mind and I’m pretty hooked for the next season. (As of posting I’ve finished season 10 so that will be posted very soon).

Early seasons of SPN are superior
so I'm re-watching Supernatural (I'm always re-watching SPN, don't mind me) and I realised why the early seasons are so freakin good whereas the laters ones are a complete mess...
Horror was the core theme of Supernatural (yes, I'm not discarding the brothers' drama, I'll get to it in a minute). These beautiful scare tactics that they employed were amazing: the crib mobile toy rotating, shadows moving out of the corner of the eyes, toys going off, subtle bloody Mary reflections in the mirror, creepy skulls dug from the ground, the ghosts flickering. Hell yea they nailed 'Scary just got sexy' with these.
Don't get me started on the background music. Whimsical music crescendo, building up the anticipation. The rock music blaring through the Impala. What happened to the cool ass music in the later seasons? They just played this weird, sad tune like someone's blowing raspberries to show grief and that's it!
Monster of the week theme and the lores/legends in early seasons were much, much better than S12's Foundry or the later season episode with bizarre tentacle porn thingy (you know which one I'm talking about). It just didn't feel the same. The stories were poorly written and even more poorly executed.
Early seasons used to be purely about Sam and Dean (as it should have been throughout) Them against the world, heaven and hell. No dumbass angel lurking in the background like a pathetic third wheel. No king of hell bitching about his sad childhood for two whole seasons. No Soccer mom half assing their way into hunting.
Foreshadowing was done so beautifully! Everytime I re-watch the early seasons I find a few bits that connects to something that happened initially in say S1-2. The parallels are done beautifully and writing is good, and I mean 'I wanna use this quote as a wallpaper' good.
The struggle for the boys was real. They had to do their own research, save their own asses, stitch their wounds, pop their dislocated shoulders back in the place. Later seasons? Bunker has answer to everything, angel healing wounds with a flash of light, Lucifer bringing Sam back from the dead without asking for anything (and no, taking him to Jack is not a good enough bargain), Jack healing wounds or whatever. Where is the damn struggle?! Where is the hero's journey?!
I miss the beautiful, colourful motel rooms that had its own personality. I HATE the bunker (yes I know a lot of people love it because Dean has a good shower, they have a home etc, etc) but no! Bunker is lame and boring and monotonous. There isn't a single thing I like about it. Gimme back my motel rooms with the sunburst mirror!
Story arc or lack thereof from S12 onwards. The main plot just got duller and duller from S12 onward and it felt like the writers got lazy and stopped putting efforts. There was no build up and the plot felt forced. The main arcs didn't feel exciting enough. BMoL and Kelly's pregnancy: the who and why? Jack: predictable. Other Micheal and Micheal Dean: meh, next! God as the big bad: interesting but I don't think they have it in them to execute this correctly.
Irrelevant/Unnecessary characters and their mini plots. S1-5 focuses purely on the brothers and that's what I'm here. I don't care how and why an idiot angel opened purgatory. It sounded more like a dull spin off plot than main story arc. I don't care about prophets and their lives (yeah Kevin is in Advance Placement, what am I to do with that?). I don't care about the different angel garrisons at war (again a plot for a lame spin off). I don't care about Crowley, his son or his relationship with Rowena. Tell me how this affects the boys. If it doesn't, please let's move on. Whatever was going on with Cole Trenton was pointless. I don't care about Mary and her hunting escapades with BMoL. I don't care about Kelly's pregnancy. The multi-universe and all characters they vomited back in the show with this. Not needed! Let Charlie, Gabriel and Bobby's memory rest in peace. Nick's killer storyline and wayward sisters. Enough said. Empty and the deal with Cas and Meg 2.0? Boring! Billy playing the bad cop, the whole death's library? Poorly executed and it turned into a bowl of cold spaghetti. In the end, the focus moved from the boys to useless characters and mini plots. Fuck that! Supernatural is about Sam and Dean and that's about it.
The direction. Later seasons lack the beauty of scenic shots of the landscape, close on up the boys' faces, the lights hitting their faces to show their beauty. Camera angles and slow panning shots. I miss the beauty that were the early seasons.

So let's talk about Road Trip (09x10) for a minute!
They've toyed around with this since their introduction, but I'm not a fan of the angel torturer thing. Not that he exists--Heaven has been sketchy since day one--but that he talks/acts/sounds like a demon. I really thing Heaven and Hell's versions of cruelty should come off as different. Heaven should have a more "just following orders" angle to it. The idea of them torturing for kicks annoys me. In DnD terms, I wish Heaven overall was portrayed more as Lawful Evil. They were in the beginning, but I feel like by the time you get to mid-show they've kinda lost the plot.
Dean flipping out and destroying stuff is just so... typically Dean. Not really sure if there's a point I'm making but he does this a lot.
I want to be pissed at Castiel for validating Dean's extremely poor choices, but the guy's a total simp, and to be honest, I think if he reacted any other way Dean would instantly go to throat about all the dumb shit that Cas has done.
Crowley is so valid for pointing out he was the only one to warn Kevin that hanging out with the Winchesters was going to end with him dead. Sometimes it really does seem like he's the only one paying a lick of attention. Ironically, if he were slightly *less* ambitious, he'd be running the whole show.
Crowley, re: Sam: "The poor giant baby's in trouble again, isn't he?" Crowley is also the best because he recognizes that Sam is just a poor little meow meow who needs to be waddled and cuddled.
I haven't actually looked, but there should be more Crowley/Cas content. Crowley's right, Cas is a total flirt. Then again, Crowley's right about everything.
I think Gadreel didn't kill Dean not just because of Dean's plot armor (partial plot armor anyway; he can only die when Sam's around to be sad about it) but because I think he actually liked Dean as a person. Either way, malicious compliance for the win! That's how you show the bosses, Gadreel.
Random demon lady thinking Castiel is hot because he killed one of his kind and stole their grace is A+. Personally like to think all of Hell was sporting uncomfortable boners when he absorbed all the Leviathan and went on a mass killing spree. They're secretly very fond of him for that.
Again, haven't actually looked, but there should be a crap ton of Gadreel/Abner stuff. Hello, they were prison boyfriends!! Where's the AU where Gadreel ditches Metatron and shacks up with Abner instead? Bonus for a scene of Gadreel kissing Abner and Dean freaking out because that's my brother's body, you dick!
Gadreel has Sam trapped in a dream case about "ghouls and cheerleaders." Interesting that he picked a scenario that would appeal to Dean, not Sam in order to keep Sam calm and preoccupied.
Okay, I get why Dean walked off when Crowley's sticking needles in Sam's brain (even though I think he shouldn't have and it once again frames things around Dean feeling bad instead of Sam's actual suffering), and I get why Cas followed (simp), but guys?? You're just gonna leave Sam's body along with Crowley? Guys? Is this thing on?
So Cas blaming Gadreel for "breaking the universe" is pretty funny (very "for want of a nail" line of thinking there). Like, God and Lucifer don't factor in this at all, it's all this one rando's faulyt.
I'll probably talk about it again in more detail at some point, but the fact that there's never a moment where Sam and Gadreel bond over being manipulated by Lucifer is criminal.
Crowley: *indicates he should possess Sam to help kick out Gadreel* Dean: "No. Not happening." Crowley: "Don't be daft. Demons can take what they want. I can burrow into that rat's nest of a head. I can wake Sam up. Just call me plan 'C.'" Castiel: "You can't--" Dean: "You got a better idea?" I bring up this conversation because Dean flipped in approximately two seconds. Amazing the man doesn't get whiplash from how fast he changes his mind.
Crowley: "Besides, I don't want to be inside your brother any longer than I have to. I'm not one for sloppy seconds." This demon is a LIAR, judge! He specifically stays in Sam longer than he has to so he can be a cheerleader! And I'm sure that, as a demon, he has had plenty of sloppy seconds!
So do you think Sam and Dean changed their safe word from Poughkeepsie to something else because of this incident? If I were Sam I would have, just to be petty.
Sam immediately calling for Dean instead of going for a weapon when Crowley pops into his head is... interesting.
"I know how possession works, Sam. You've seen everything that he's seen, even if you can't remember." So I completely forgot about this line but the implications are quite horrifying. I think it's been inconsistent throughout the show, but my takeaway is that when people say that they don't remember anything post-possession, it's because they're either lying or they actively suppressing their own memories. So Sam actually remembers everything he did as Meg, Lucifer, and now Gadreel. Three additional sets of memories are in his head, all three of which involve murder. That's borked, yo.
Again, Crowley fighting to help Sam is adorable. He's no grade-A simp like Cas, but he is secretly fond of him and I love it. Dean, too.
Where are my VOTE CROWLEY t-shirts?
Kinda funny how Castiel, without either of the boys throwing out so much as a, "Can you give us a minute?" walks off to give them pseudo-privacy. He's such a good third wheel, knowing when he's not needed. <3
Dean's, "All right. Let me hear it," is honestly insufferable. He really thinks that he can get off with a stern talking to, and when that doesn't work, turns to self-flagellation instead. And when that doesn't work, he takes off dramatically to do something that will make himself feel better. At no point does he attempt to make a genuine apology or even suggest the idea amends. For all his "I'm poison" crap, he still doesn't think he did anything wrong. He sucks so bad for this, it's kind of amazing.
Hey, we get to begin the divorce era proper now! Nice.

okay so, yesterday I found your spn meta by chance and fell in love with them 'cause more than writing they're like images, like they really depict things and I just immediately understand what you mean instantly + I started to rewatch Steve Yockey's episodes 'cause I feel like I like his writing (lots of queer! lots of rom-com references! but it's all done so intellingently, I love it!) but ALSO sometimes it doesn't translate to me + I just saw you wrote about "Optimism"= I GOTTA ASK: what's your take on "Optimism"? I don't understand what the Zombie story and the Musca one should reveal about the characters. Visually, it looks like the Musca = Charlie, so Harper and the zombie are ??? I'm mad at myself 'cause I don't seem to get what the show is telling me so I'm hoping you can share what the show tells YOU and, vicariously, I can get it as well (lol). THANK YOU!
Hi! Hello!
Oh, really? That's so cool. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a "meta writer." I don't mean to be. I just like to ramble. But cool! It's probably mostly that we think alike and are sympatico in some key ways. :-) Always fun to find kindred spirits!
///
O P T I M I S M
I have so many thoughts on Optimism. It's one of my fave episodes! I actually did a re-watch-slash-convo with some friends on Discord and just transcribed the very, very, very LOOONG bulk of it today!
I haven't written much on the Musca. After spending a lot of time of @scoobydoodean's blog, I've just about decided the Musca plot is actually a Sam's emotions-through line more than it is a true dark mirror. Even AU Charlie is cheeky about it:
AU CHARLIE (annoyed at Sam, about the Musca): Your nifty metaphor has holes.
Basically, Charlie is saying that mirrors aren't one-to-one, and that trying to force-fit them into being one-to-one can be super annoying sometimes.
//
CHARLIE - Every two hundred years there is "bad egg". When a male fails to find a mate, he abandons his community and starts using peoples bodies to "nest". Binding them together with a viscous goo. And when the goo fits...
//
The Musca/fly is at face-value:
A) A bodysnatcher plot: In that regard, it could be like all angels, demons, or anyone inhabiting a body. (Cas, Lucifer, Michael, Crowley, etc.) Ergo, it's a dark, uncharitable Cas mirror the way Dave Mathers outlaw wraith was in Tombstone. It could be saying that Cas "failed" among "his own people" and cruelly took up space in a human body. But that would be grossly oversimplifying the whole situation, saying that Cas "should have stayed with his people," which ofc doesn't work.
It, as Charlie says, "has a lot of holes." @ilarual has written a lot about the totalitarian structure of Heaven. And Sam himself wants Cas around. As far as metaphors go, it's a dud for Cas.
B) It's a failure to thrive plot: Because the Musca "failed" in The Real World with its Own People, perhaps failed to live up to The prescriptive Dream of Success (TM), now it's wreaking havoc on others.
Sam himself "failed out" of Harvard. He "choked." Kevin Train and Patience Turner are also Failed Gifted Students. Losers who didn't live up to their potential. This could even apply to Chuck, binding together his characters because he's a Loser with a capital L.
///
ANYWAY, I feel like the Music plot is a "red herring" for a few reasons.
One: The main Harper plot is about breaking narratives, about not relying so much on books. And then Charlie says this:
CHARLIE: Goo. So, yeah. I'd say this is the right place. Now, I'm just trying to figure out what we are dealing with. Thus, books.
Aside: Later Cas says sarcastically in Ouroboros that Sam and Rowena, "Have many, many books."
So, there's this niggling indictment of trying to find too much truth in books...
///
Two: Sam has a tendency to see something and, like, imprint on it. He tends to fall into "It's just like me!" instead of speaking frankly about the present situations and emotions.
*In American Nightmare, he sees Madga Peterson, an abused child* -> "She's just like me!"
*In Somewhere in Between Heaven and Hell, he sees someone lying about something completely unrelated to his current situation* ->"Omg, they're lying to them, like I'm lying to Dean! It's just like me!"
*In Lost & Found, he meets Jack Kline, who is Lucifer's son "OMG, he's just like me!" -> *spoiler alert* Jack is not in fact much like Sam at all. -> Sidenote: instead of speaking frankly about how Dean is grieving, how Lucifer killed Cas and likely killed Mary, he uses complex euphemisms with Jack, ones that actually obscure the reality of the situation! This winds up annoying Jack and making him pull away from Sam.
///
IMHO...Sam isn't...naturally all that great with emotions.
He tries really, really hard, and he loves patterns, but he's always seeming to force-fit situations and scenarios into neat little boxes so he can passively-aggressively use it to indirectly communicate something he feels about himself.
He has a very cognitive empathy style. Bless him.
///
So what's REALLY going on here?
Well. In this episode, he wants Charlie to stay. He wants Charlie to stay and fill a void the other Charlie left behind. He wants Charlie to stay really, really badly. And he beats around the bush about it.
At first, he sidesteps his own emotions by passive-aggressively implying that it's Dean that in fact needs her.
CHARLIE: He'll be fine. Your brother, I mean. He's got other friends, right? SAM: Plenty. Uhm, he used to have a pretty damn good wingman. CHARLIE: So call that guy to check on him. SAM: That guy was you. CHARLIE: No, it wasn't. SAM: Right, I, uh, sorry. I didn't mean that.
And then by trying to make the case fit her.
He's very indirect and weird about it. Because he's Sam. (It's a contrast to the effortless, awkward-but-honest communication style we see from characters like Jack and Dean in this very episode.)
SAM: Charlie, you can't just quit and go live on a mountain somewhere. People need people. CHARLIE: Why? Cause they're the luckiest people in the world? SAM: Look, come on. We just do. We're social animals. CHARLIE: Emphasis on animals. SAM: Yeah, but you're also a hunter. The things that we've seen, it's not so easy to just walk away from it all. Believe me, I've tried. Our Charlie tried. CHARLIE: Yeah, well again, she ain't me. It's my life, Sam. Not hers. And not yours.
Ah, yes. Instead of saying, “I want you here,” it’s, “people need people.”
And Hell, sometimes indirect communication works! Like how Dean and Cas use Felix the snake to indirectly communicate with Jack in Peace of Mind!
But the difference with Sam is...he's not using this indirect communication style to find out how Charlie feels (the way Dean and Cas use the snake to suss out how Jack feels).
No, he's using the whole thing to try to tell Charlie what he thinks is best for her! To tell her things, not find out things.
Eventually, he breaks and says what he actually thinks, but only after AU Charlie is starting to lose her patience with him:
SAM (faux-sadly): Got to say, I do feel kind of bad for the Musca. I mean, he could have been happy if he'd stayed with his people. Didn't have to go off on his own just because... CHARLIE (exasperated): Okay, I get it. I am just like the bug and I shouldn't go out on my own.
OMG, Sammy! It's okay if we want to hit Sam sometimes, right? I too wanted to hit him after he said this to Charlie.
CHALIE: But your nifty metaphor has holes. I wasn't looking for love. I found it and I lost it. And I didn't kill people and literally nest in their body parts so...(Scene cuts to other Musca removing the body of the dead one) SAM: Okay, yeah I know, I know, How about this? Don't leave.
(Aside// I think this is a cheeky nod to the fact that Cas and Dean weren't looking for love either. In fact, they tried (and keep trying) really, really hard not to love each other. Their real life was faaaar more complicated than some simple "bodysnatcher plot.")
But thank God--Sam finally says outright what he needed to say to Charlie: Don't leave.
Now, it probably would've been better if he's gone a step further: "I don't want you to leave," but for Sam, this is pretty good progress.
SAM: Hear me out. Sure some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared. But the guy we just saved, he has a wife and children. I'm not saying that all people are good people or even that most people are but if we help people then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death. It's worth it. CHARLIE: Just to be super clear, I am not like the fly monster. (Sam chuckles) But, I'll think about staying.
So I think OVERALL the Musca plot is really about highlighting Sam's difficult communication style, and I think it's intentionally being cheeky about it how it's using a "really "dumb metaphor" with gaping holes!
It's about how Sam tries to force-fit the case of the week into saying what he wants it to say...instead of just saying it.
///
I think Sam has a little bit of a "mental main character syndrome." He sees a scenario and moves directly into cognitive empathy, reading the situation and thinking:
How can I apply this to myself? Or make it a stand-in for either something I want to believe about myself or a stand-in for something I want to say indirectly?
Sometimes you'll see ppl insist that Sam is the "MC" because every storyline tells you "something about Sam." But I'm more in the camp that it's Sam's inherent cognitive style of empathy at work, desperately reworking anything and everything to make it apply to himself.
Whereas Cas and Dean (and Jack) have a truer emotional style of empathy, connecting with people for who they actually are, as they are.
That's not to say that both styles can't be manipulative when we want them to be. But Sam really struggles with his style in a way I feel like Dean and Cas do not. Dean and Cas perhaps don't even realize what effective communicators they actually are!

My ranking of SPN seasons (based only on their PLOT) pt. 4 [final]
OKAAAAAY, LEEEEET'S GO!
Here, here and here I've covered from ranking #15 to #4 so let's see which seasons will be on the podium!
3. Season 8: This season really gave me life, it's absolutely one of the best. Plot-wise, I ADORED the introduction of the tablets and the Trials, whoever came up with this idea was pure genius. So Basically our heroes have to deal with the aftermath of the events in season 7: Dean has spent 1 year fighting monsters in Purgatory while Sam run away from his responsibilities and has found shelter in the arms of a woman. Cas seems nowhere to be found. The character who moves the plot forward is my beloved Crowley: while Dean was feeling pure in Purgatory with this vampire boyfriend (ihih), and Sam was guitl-trapped into adopting a dog (seriuosly? biggest red flag ever), our King of Hell was busy carrying the show on his shoulders. He kidnaps Kevin and orders him to translate the demon tablet. Since he's not stupid, he quickly understands that 1 leviathan table + 1 demon tablet = 1 angel tablet. Consequently, his quest for the latter begins. After 1 year of hedonism, our heroes realize that they had left poor Kevin behind while an astonished Castiel comes out of nowhere. The plot gets interesting. We find out that the demon tablet contains information on how to close the Gates of Hell. Comedy of error ensues since literally everybody thinks that the angle tablet would contain the same info as the demon tablet (really, guys? The ONLY smart person in the room about this was DEAN, as per usual). So what's written on the angel tablet? Surprise! We don't really know 'cause poor Kevin spent 6 effing months trying to translate half of the demon tablet so there's now way to know now! Cas makes the usual stupid choice and gets played by Metatron: he will undergo the Three Trials to close the Gates of Heaven. Meanwhile poor Sam undergoes the Trials to close the Gates of Hell. Eventually, Dean convinces him to stop the last trial otherwise he will die and poor Dean cannot live without his baby brother (same goes for little jealous Sam who, while literally dying, finds time to tell Dean that he feels left behind because Dean seems to love his Purgatory vampire and his trenchoated angel more than him (codependecy level: atomic)). Metatron fools everyone and cast a spell to make all angels fall. BOOM, season finale is EPIC. I really really enjoyed this season, it was so rich and full of turns of events but everything was coherent and engaging. What I didn't like is brainwashing Cas via Naomi. Plot-wise, it was unnecessary since Naomi literally reveals her original plan to Dean after episode 17 so, what was the point? Sure it gave us the memorable crypt scene and for it I am forever grateful. But in terms of plot, meh. It was weak. Also, it looks a lot like what happened with Godstiel in season 6 AND weird Cas in season 7 (poor Cas knows no peace of mind, literally).Once again Cas as a character is not fully in control and makes shitty decisions for reasons unknown? Mmmmh, me not likey.
2. Season 4: This season was explosive, I fucking loved it! First of all, as I've already said, I like when there's sort of a deadline in the plot and here we have a big one: Lilith is on her course to open the 66 seals that will free Lucifer from his cage. Problem is: nobody knows which ones she will choose since there are like 600 of them. Sam and Dean try to prevent the opening of the seals but things get complicated when the Angels enter the arena: they certainly look more like enemies rather than allies and for sure cause a lot of problems more than provide solutions. Previosly on Supernatural, Dean was rescued by Castiel from Hell (what an epic entrance, Cas!!!) after having spent 30 human years torturing and being tortured by demons, yay! Sam is now addicted to demon blood and nobody is pleased about it so our heroes have plenty on their plate. Plot-wise, this season was everything, it was a rollercoaster of turns of events, allies that become enemies, enemies become allies but wait no! they've been enemies all along! Castiel inadvertently changes the course of the story and creates real free will, Supernatural goes fully meta with the introduction of the Supernatural books by Chuck Shurley, angels are showed as scary, powerful creatures rather than comforting, merciful, ethereal beings ("Read the bible" LOL)... Man, what a fucking epic season! It felt serious but also carefree? It seems weird to say that but later on SPN gets increasingly tragic in tone so I'm very pleased with season 4 because it managed to balance everything out but with a lighter twist.
Season 11: while I was writing this, I was not sure which season would be number 1 but here I am, once again, in love with the plot of season 11. What can I say? "I'm a lover, not a fighter". So, the plot: the Winchester Bros Codependency Inc. has reached catastrophic levels: they are the ones to be thanked for the release of The Darkness into the world. The first interesting thing is that, for the first time ever, nobody really seems to know what to do. Thank God, there's the King of Hell (LOL) who promptly seizes the opportunity to take Amara and raise her hoping this would turn the events in his favours. However, he's unable to control her and soon Amara escapes wreacking havoc in the world. Not knowing what to do, Castiel decides to find Metatron, while Sam decides to go back into the Cage because he believes that Lucifer might be key to fighting Amara. Chaos ensues. Metatron doesn't really know shit, Lucifer same but he manages to escape via Castiel!vessel and we get Casifer (it was insane, I loved every minute of it!), the world is in shambles. A deus ex machina is needed: God/Chuck enters the chat. From here on, it all gets very philosophical and maybe that's why I frigging love this season. So, remember the Winchester Bros Codependency Inc.? Well, turns out Amara and God suffers from the same syndrome. They manage to (momentarily) find their balance while Dean (who had a bond with Amara because they both shared the Mark of Cain or whatever) decides to go to battle alone to convince Amara to stop or, if not possible, to die trying to save the world. And Sam Winchester is finally okay with this! Wow, progress, yes, right??? All ends so well that Amara gifts Dean with his friggin' mother who was dead 30+ years ago! Happy ending, much? LOL. I liked the simplicity of the plot, it's all very progressive, the pacing is slow but never boring, all characters still continue to make stupid choices but ultimately these don't bite them in the ass and they use them to grow... I don't know, I really enjoyed season 11. The only "negative" thing is that I wish the writers made Dean tell Cas something more meaningful than "you're our brother". Tons of metas have been written about it and yeah, I know, I know. Still, this season was all about "following the heart" so I'd have appreciated more honesty about this topic but hey, we all know how it ended so #nosurprise.
Okay, I'm done here! What do YOU think? Do you agree with my ranking? I'm curious, let me know!

I just finished watching the Netflixs Devil May Cry series during my work breaks. I've never played any of the games or watched the other anime before this. All of my knowledge of the lore comes from two YouTube videos talking about the abridged timeline. It's safe to say that I'm coming at this from an outsider perspective. Because of that, I want to write down my own thoughts on it, since I think plenty of people might be curious about that.
Honestly, it was good. Nothing amazing. Not even God awful. Just decent.
Spoilers Thoughts Undercut
Good
The action is fantastic.
It has pretty good comedy. There are plenty of times where it made me laugh.
Dante is awesome. He reminds of a more down to Earth and intelligent Goku.
Vergil in this series seems promising with his cameo at the end.
Lady is a character as well till the very end.
I love the idea of the White Rabbit in a vacuum. He kinda reminds of The Darkling in the sense that he's fighting to protect a group of people, but is willing to do questionable acts to accomplish that goal. He's a fantastic foil for Dante and Lady. I'm just iffy if I think he was the best choice as a villain for this one, especially with this season focusing more on Lady, which makes me think that her father should've still been the villain.
The animation in the flashback episode was gorgeous. Half of it looked like something out of an indie game.
Changing the animation style when the guy got into Hell was a clever move.
The part where American Idiot is blasting as the US is bombing Hell had me in stitches. Talk about fitting.
The soundtrack was awesome and really fit the tone and time period of the series.
Hearing Kevin Conroy was a huge surprise for me, but completely welcome in my books.
Bad
Some of the CGI is pretty wonky looking.
This had the same problem as Hazbin Hotel where the story felt a little rushed at times. Considering this only had 8 episodes, nothing much could've been really done about it.
I found the identity of the White Rabbit kinda lame. Instead of being Arkham like I thought, especially since this series changed his motives to make it protecting his family rather than power like in the games, it's some random human guy who somehow was able to slip into the demon realm and is fighting to save the demons. Yes, I know he's based on a character from the manga. But from what I understand, the character in the manga has a completely different backstory and role in the plot. I'm a bit confused why they would set up a mystery to have it be just some guy.
If the White Rabbit is just some guy, why the fuck is he wearing a mask? People do that to disguise their identity. But no one in the human world knows him outside of Lady, who met him briefly. The demons have accepted him as one of their own, so they don't care that he's human. There's no point to it outside of keeping a half baked mystery for the audience, which is stupid. He reminds me of Crowley from Twisted Wonderland in a bad way in that sense.
Lady's Power Ranger Squad could've been fleshed out more.
I didn't like how Lady backstabbed Dante by handing him over to the US government to turn him into some Winter Soldier knockoff. Normally, I'm all for female characters making questionable or bad choices. She learnt about how corrupt they were and that not all demons are bad, so it feels like character regression and makes no sense.
This might be me reading too much into things, but my reading of this is that the events of this series symbolically mirror the Iraq War. The US military in the series portrays Hell as a dangerous place full of evil beings, when in reality, their true interest just lies in exploiting its resources. This parallels the way the US justified the Iraq War by claiming Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, when the real motive was access to oil. If we follow that interpretation to its conclusion, the NPC demons from literal Hell could be seen as representing Middle Eastern and North African refugees. While I don’t think the writers intentionally made this connection, it's still just yikes and plays into a lot of awful negative MENA stereotypes. (And that makes Lady's decision at the end even worse. She's aligning herself with a group that's reminiscent of those who we know were the bad guys in real life, despite knowing that they are in the wrong.)
Rating wise: 7/10
Over all, if you go into this like it's an AU that is based on the property or an outsider like me, just wanting pure popcorn entertainment, you'll have a fun time. If you are expecting a one to one adaptation of DMC 3 or high art, then you're gonna be disappointed. Though, there are some things that I wish were done a lot better..

The thing about Supernatural is it's like Buffy if Wilow was missing from 60% of the episodes and Xander was missing from a different 60%. It's like if on Deep Space Nine someone went to Quarks and he just wasn't there for no discernable reason. It's like if Norm regularly wasn't at the bar in Cheers for 6 episode spans but everyone still acts as if he's always there.
They keep building really good dynamic ensembles but they don't have the budget(?) to have them in most episodes and (most) seasons are a few episodes longer than they need to be so they have to say Mary is off with the BMoL and Kevin is busy doing tablet work and Cas is watching The Wire. The only people the in-and-out nature of their alliance really works for are Bobby, Crowley and Rowena because they legitimately DO have their own stuff going on that doesn't really need to be explored onscreen.
It's just crazy. Supernatural clearly WANTED to be an ensemble show, but it couldn't be. The practical outside force of "we can't have Castiel on the show that often and stay in budget" (validity of this idea is up for debate) influences the interior facts of the show, "Castiel frequently just isn't there and when he is there's very high emotional stakes because we don't have him long and need to make the most of it", which influences the interior character motivations and feelings, "Castiel isn't there because he's easily manipulated, headstrong, and wants to solve things by himself. The emotions are high when he is back because Dean LOVES him and feels deeply hurt when he's gone but he can never stop him leaving as long as the show is airing." And then those interior character feelings inform the plot of the show.
#castiel is the best example bc he's on it the longest#but also crowley: feeling (and being) rejected by dean becomes a major force of his plotline with wanting power over lucifer#mary: leaving the boys as soon as possible and it's a major conflict between her and them#a more guest star example but meg: 'you didn't even look for me?' hope and bitterness#informs her eventual sacrifice for cas

3. If you could wield an angel blade or the Colt, which would you pick?
Angel blade. I don't like guns in general, and the Colt doesn't even work as advertised. An angel blade, on the other hand, is not a mythical weapon that'll make me a target just by having it, and it will kill things the Colt can't. It can also be melted down into bullets that work just as well as the blade itself, as demonstrated in season 8 and I'm still annoyed that it's never brought up again. Nobody ever appreciated Crowley.
8. Crowley or Lucifer: who's the better antagonist?
Aside from one being my #1 fave character ever and the other being my least favorite character of the series, I think Lucifer is underwhelming overall and only gets more irritating the more he's utilized. He's at his best in season 5, even if his role as a villain is standard good vs. evil. As far as later appearances go, I like Casifer because Misha makes him interesting. Any other time, he's more of a nuisance than a serious threat and the writing often undercuts previous plot points and characterizations to justify his inclusion. I also can't stand Mark Pellegrino, so there's that.
Crowley, on the other hand, is always interesting because you never doubt him as a threat and can't predict what he'll do next. Even when he's not the antagonist, he's always toeing the line between "necessary but questionable" and "good guys aren't allowed to do that." The standoff with Sam in season 10 always sticks in my mind because, even though he's currently siding with the Winchesters, there's that moment of doubt when you wonder if he's actually going to kill Sam or not. (I mean, you know he's not, but you barely have to suspend your disbelief.) Season 8 is my favorite largely because I love him as an antagonist.
9. What song from Supernatural's soundtrack always gets stuck in your head?
It doesn't necessarily get stuck, but I can't listen to "One Way Or Another" without picturing Sam and Dean oh so cautiously making their way through the crowd of random accidents and near misses after Balthazar messes with the timeline.
20. If you could bring one Supernatural character back to life, who would it be?
My first answer will always be Crowley, but I'm trying not to be too biased. Either Charlie or Kevin, in that case. Even the cast agrees Charlie's death was stupid and unnecessary, and Kevin's fate by the end of the show is also stupid and unnecessary. You can say that about a lot of deaths on this show, but these two bug me the most.

Why Being Manipulated into Letting Gadreel in a Huge Deal for Sam?
I know a lot of Dean Girls were very upset (and will be upset after reading this post) with Sam when Dean asked him if the roles were reversed if he would have done the same thing (letting an angel possess him to save his life). Sam simply says no! Some fans have gone to the extent of calling him selfish but no, Sam is not being selfish in that scene. It wasn't that he didn't care about his brother. He really does and that is why him saying no is actually a good thing.
Now see, Dean never had to go through the whole loss of bodily autonomy due to a possession issue (not until after he was possessed by Michael but that's way after the Gadreel plot) like Sam has been and disturbingly a lot more number of times than Dean's single rodeo with Otherworld Michael (or is it AU Michael? whatever!). Just to keep the argument simple, I am purely focusing on the loss of bodily autonomy purely from a possession POV.
When Meg possessed Sam in S2, she used his body to kill other hunters, to assault Jo and to beat Dean. Maybe she did a lot worse than that, we don't know. Who is left with the trauma of that knowledge? Sam!
The Gary-Sam body swap. This one though seems funny on the surface, it's actually kinda disturbing because Gary used Sam's body to have sex and the kid. Kinda gross enough already but that dumb kid could have easily handed over the vessel to Lucifer. Imagine, that's how it played and Sam was back into his body. Now who is trapped with Lucifer, the Devil? Sam!
Speaking of, understandably saying yes to Lucifer was Sam's call to put him back in the box but it didn't go down without blood on his hand. The moment Lucifer took control of Sam's body, he killed the demons from Sam's life that deceived him. I am guessing these were possessed people he killed in the process and not just wisps of black smoke. At Stull cemetery, he exploded Cas to bits, snapped Bobby's neck and beat up Dean to pulp! all by whose hands? Sam's!
Gadreel's possession did help Sam get better but at what cost? Kevin's death? How many nightmares did Sam have seeing his hands burning Kevin hollow? Now let me point out the aftermath of this possession which is somehow even worse than the actual possession: Crowley skewered Sam's brains with needles, hell, he even possessed Sam to wake him as if one possession was not enough. Sam literally had two supernatural beings possessing him at one time! Don't even get me started on the painful, torturous grace extraction process. Sam was willing to die in that moment because he believed his life wasn't worth saving, definitely not at the cost of Kevin's life!
Before this role reversal scene, Dean wasn't possessed by anything, so he doesn't understand how horrible it is to lose autonomy over one's mind and body. I don't expect him to grasp the gravity of it. He sees it as a healing from within. For him, if 'ends justifying the means' that's all that matters.
When every single possession has caused nothing but grave trauma to Sam Winchester, tell me why would he or anyone for that matter, in their sane heads do this on their own brother, especially when they love them so much?
Here's another very real life perspective for all those who feel Sam saying 'no' if the situation was reversed was a horrible betrayal and proof that he doesn't love Dean enough: Ever had someone you love on life support or gone through a situation where you had to put down your beloved pet? Why do we do this? is it because we don't love them? because we don't care? no! Because sometimes, it is better to let them go than to prolong their suffering by putting them through this pain. So next time you feel Sam was being selfish, or disloyal to Dean or that he didn't care enough, think about a loved one suffering through something horrible because you didn't have the guts to let go!
