Yeah, I knew I would be brushed off as one of those genuinely racist people whose criticism of Annette begins and ends with "MUH POLITICS, MUH WOKE" without knowing shit about history or even being a fan of the games. And as other people have pointed out in the nothes, NFCV is genuinely all sorts of -ist and -phobic, there was a huge post that blew up about the blatant antisemitic implications of a "vampire cabal" owning all the slaves, so if you really want to play white savior, the show you're defending has plenty of material already :^)

And yes. I know this is going to sound like those MUH WOKE people, but I swear I don't mean it in the same way: Castlevania is not the franchise that should deal with real life politics. Not the games, nor the show. It's about humans vs. vampires. It has always been about human vs. vampires, or any sort of monster. Yes, N!Isaac had a past of slavery, but 1) it was highly historically inaccurate, since NFCV takes place before the Transatlantic Slave Trade and slaves in that area tended to be European, 2) it was still lowkey racist, as if black people can only be slaves, as if Isaac doesn't have already an in-built backstory of being persecuted for his powers, and 3) it was, at the end of the day, an insignificant factor of NFCV's lore. It justified one antagonist's misanthropy. It wasn't the literal core of the show. Nothing about the original show, let alone the damn games, would lead me to think "mmh, I sure would love to see important, complex historical events played out in this setting!".

man by the nature of the circles i follow i generally don't see a lot of takes from izzy stans, but both the notes of the post you reblogged and the original twitter thread just make them look like their izzy brainworms have destroyed their reading comprehension and situational awareness. technology. the fact that you can just break a box that's hooked up to fireworks and the fireworks go off is actually so funny to me. i really love in shows when ppl use breaking something technical as shorthand for making to do something, when in reality it would. not work. in fact, for a box that's hooked up to a bunch of dangerous flammable objects that shoot into the sky, i would sure hope the fail safe would be for them to not go off.

marinette without tikki. i remember this episode. mostly bc i remember ppl talking about how it demonstrated that marinette was still ladybug without tikki. and while i agree that she was resourceful and that's why she's a good ladybug, not the other way round, the whole premise of her losing tikki really irked me. i can't remember my exact thoughts bc they're so fleeting when i watch the show (i should really be writing my thoughts down as i watch), but it just feels like the writers are using it as some kind of excuse to punish marinette and "teach her a lesson" when she doesn't really need it? idk smth smth the writers are bad at their job.

speaking of, chat noir and his cataclysm. again, i think that the writers treat both marinette and adrien (tho, more like chat noir) really badly in the show, but in opposite directions. but it, again, speaks to how badly they were at writing. the fact that half the time the only way they can come up with chat noir to use his cataclysm is usually bc he's been hypnotized or turned against ladybug is bad writing. they're not being creative enough and the show is suffering for it!

this was also one of those episodes that felt sped up.

*i just think there's something to be said about the fact that the creator was obsessed with chinese mysticism. which, i should not need to say, is just so extremely racist. like i can and can't believe no one ever talked about it while the fandom was active (that i saw, anyway, but then again, maybe there weren't a lot of asian fans in this fandom, despite knowing that it aired in korea around the same time it aired in france and the u.s. that or i just didn't find them/they were few and far between/they were driven out. and yes i know korea is not china, i'm just saying there had to have been asian fans, in general.)

and the fact that not only did he hand-wave a lot of shit in lieu of doing actual research, he just added a bunch of random animals to the supposed chinese zodiac??? and like to what end? does it serve the narrative to have more? why not just make your own zodiac and say that! the ladybug is certainly not part of the zodiac, and the cat, if we're going off the chinese and japanese zodiac, is very deliberately not in it for differing reasons based on which story you read. moth? peacock? where is he getting this? he should've just made his own zodiac, which would've been fine! then he wouldn't have had to also rely on "chinese mysticism" either.

I think a lot of people have one image of racism, like the one we often see in movements like Black lives matter, Stop Asian hate and so on. Which is a correct image, but they're so many other different racism too.

How Ben, Diego and Allison are written as supporting characters for their white siblings is a perfect example. THEY ARE SO MUCH MORE. I dont even read so much tua fanfic because of this reason.

Even if there's some true Melby fans, it feels like straight shippers have convinced the Charmed writers to go with Melby, and by extent straight shippers got to speak over queer fans on a queer story. Melby still feels forced and I just can't really back it up. I feel bad for Bethany, who apparently is gay herself, having people have this talk about a character she plays. 1/2

Pre Charmed I was one that never really saw much difference if it was a gay or hetro person playing a gay character. I never saw the big deal about whether a person of x sexuality or race wrote about a gay or poc characters. Charmed changed that, with Melonie Diaz seemingly being anti Abimel, not understanding why people shipp them. The writer stuff is self explanatory at this point, sad it feels like ppl r ok with gays getting less if it's cis het pocs benefiting. (2/2)

Okay, so a lot of things here but first we'll talk about Melby. I agree there are some people who do genuinely like them (but they’re few tbh). I was one of the people genuinely excited for Melby when Ruby was first introduced - especially because I was feeling zero chemistry from MelKat and I was so relieved they replaced Kat with Ruby as a love interest because for me personally, I do think Melby does have chemistry and I was into it. But the season progressed... and nothing. My big problem with Melby is that their entire relationship was developed offscreen, and the very very very little that we do have onscreen doesn't really have much continuity. I mean. Here's a summary of their development (like this is ALL the Melby content leading up to the ILY:

2x12, they meet

2x13, they wake up in bed together (awesome, we never even saw their first kiss LOL), end of episode they decide to be casual

2x19, they break up (even though they weren't even a couple??)

3x02, they're back together without addressing the issue with magic

3x06, they break up, again. make up again.

3x12, they're saying i love you

Like... literally WHAT?! what?!?! I've seen many poorly written wlw relationships (because that seems to be a standard for a lot of shows) but damn, Melby takes it to a whole new level. And I think the thing that makes it even more frustrating, is that the fact is literally all the other wlw ships, canon and non-canon (that's Melko, Melda, Melkat and Abimel) ... ALL have better writing, better build-up and better development that Melby has. It's the fact that we've had better wlw writing before this, that's why it's harder to just be okay with it because we know the writers are actually capable of doing better, so why are we stuck with a non-existent ship instead? I’d take Melko, Melda, Abimel and even Melkat whom I don’t really like - over Melby because they all actually have content. And Jada, Niko, Kat and Abigael are their own person, instead of a love interest written to fit Mel in whatever way is convenient (which is a whole other issue too). And it feels even more unfair when you consider Melby only gets about a tenth of screentime compared to the het ships on the show when Mel is just as much a lead character as her sisters.

And so yeah. And it sucks and it’s annoying because it’s mostly the straight people shoving it down our throats - blaming the lack of investment for Melby on racism when it literally has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with - again, the lack of everything! (And omfg, is2g when it’s the white cishets telling qwoc who ship Abimel we’re racist.... stfu perhaps??) Honestly, Melby scenes for me are cute - on their own, without context bec with context it just sucks. They’re enjoyable, but they’re not exciting because the best part about shipping is the build-up, the waiting-for-it-to-happen. Melby had none of that. And that’s usually the part where you start getting invested on a ship, yk. At least that’s how it is for me. 

As for Bethany, yeah I agree it sucks because... I mean I don’t know her, but I follow her Insta and she seems like a genuinely nice person (with a super cute cat!) and idk I mean I haven’t seen people tagging her or anything when expressing disappointment with Melby so I don’t think she’s aware of the discourse. (I hope, because she deserves better than that) but honestly none of the criticism for Melby falls on Bethany. It’s not her fault at all. It’s on the showrunners for having it play out the way that it has.

And Melonie. I mean yeah. I have nothing against her, really. But as far as wlw representation goes, we know that she has a voice in the writers room from one of her interviews and even Abimel aside since that’s not the canon ship, I feel like it’s important to notice that even for Melby she doesn’t really push for more of it. She seems very content with what we’re given (which is next to nothing lbr) and I’m kinda meh about it — and I agree this is where the difference between having hets play gay characters matter. Because gay people will usually push for better gay representation because it’s personal to them and they know exactly what it means to the audience. Like look at how Chyler Leigh from Supergirl is constantly pushing for better wlw. And of course that’s not to say hets never do that because some do (like Azie Tesfai, for example bless her soul), but then for some it’s just a job. And to be clear, I’m not hating on Melonie for not doing more, but I think it’s also true that an actual lgbt actor might make more effort.

I think it’s basically impossible to not be aware of celebrities within fandom (by which I mean the actors/writers/developers/etc involved in the media said fandom is built around) at least on SOME level. I mean even something as casual as people making memes about Filoni being the saviour of SW, or dunking on Favreau because of the season 2 finale, etc. Which is totally fine! I think actually talking about the real people involved in a piece of work helps to contextualise a lot of discussions about the media they produce. I even like those sappy articles about Pedro Pascal talking to the baby yoda doll like it’s a real baby or whatever, those things are completely harmless and pretty normal.

The issue I have is more around “stan” culture and people prioritising their personal and emotional engagement with specific celebrities over serious discussions about them as real people (see: people getting mad at others for rightly criticising Gina Carano’s racist and transphobic behaviour on twitter because they like her as a celebrity). So my flippant comment about not paying attention to celebrities is a clumsy way of me saying I don’t really like “following” celebrities on social media or using my free time to keep up to date on their personal lives. Again, I don’t think it’s inherently bad if people do that, it’s just that fandom trends towards extreme idolisation of celebrities that is deeply unhealthy.

The flip side to that is people keeping track of celebrities specifically to remember all the bad or problematic things they’ve done. And I do that to some extent too (see again Gina Carano), and I think it’s extremely important to keep in mind that these people are exponentially more influential than their audience with the things they say and do, so it is 100% fair to scrutinise their behaviour, especially if they’re spouting really harmful or bigoted shit. But also I don’t have the time or energy to keep track of every harmful thing any creative person whose work I admire has done, and I don’t think that is a healthy thing to do either. because you will ALWAYS find skeletons in their closets. And also like, at a certain point you will be incapable of enjoying anything - I wouldn’t be able to enjoy Star Wars AT ALL if that were the case. Again, it’s entirely valid not to engage with media because the people involved in it are shitty, and I’ve also done that, but by the same token I can’t like “vet” every piece of media I consume prior to consuming it. It’s a case by case basis sort of thing and you will have to use your discretion when deciding what you think is acceptable and what isn’t, but I think it’s unhealthy to view “consumption of a piece of work = endorsement of the people involved” OR “intentionally ignoring or getting angry at the criticisms of the people involved in a piece of work because it makes me personally uncomfortable”. The latter is often used to dismiss criticisms of things like racism and transphobia within both the media people are consuming and the authors involved in said media, but I don’t think the only alternative is to hew to the former. They also aren’t mutually exclusive positions because as I said, it’s a case by case thing and also people are inconsistent with how they apply those rules because people in general are inconsistent about their behaviour (which is not a moral judgement - I do this too!).

This is a very winding and long-winded way of me saying that in general, my personal approach to media is to consume it and enjoy it for what it is without focusing on the people involved in said media too much until it is directly relevant to bring them up. A good example is George Lucas - lots of people idolise him for being “the” author of Star Wars and get extremely defensive when criticisms of his work are brought up, and his words are often cited in arguments about Star Wars (“George Lucas said X about this topic in an interview so this is evidence I’m right”, etc). And I don’t think that’s entirely without merit, but I’m much more interested in referencing him as an author when discussing things like say, the racism endemic to SW and how he’s had a major role in incorporating racist themes into the text of SW, as opposed to him like, trying to alter canon by making external comments about it in interviews (“Dumbledore is actually gay”, that sort of thing). One is directly relevant to the text as it exists in popular consciousness, while the other is trying to patch-in extra layers of meaning or lore without altering/updating the text itself (GL also has edited and re-edited the OT like a billion times, but that’s different topic for another day).

So anyway, I’m generally critical of stan culture and my interaction with celebrities in fandom is to admire them from afar and/or criticise their behaviour when it’s relevant to the discussion at hand. Just as I think it’s good to be critical of the media you consume (not ‘critical’ as in being negative but in the sense that you are open to discussing its strengths and flaws as a piece of text and not treating it as impeachable or above critical review), I think it’s beneficial to treat celebrities the exact same way. They are people with flaws and biases, and those flaws and biases will inform how the media they are involved with is shaped to varying degrees. This is doubly true when the media in question is dynamic and evolving (as SW is), so the text may in fact change (see: the Tusken Raiders’ portrayal in The Mandalorian as compared to the Original Trilogy).

I hope that makes sense lmao. I also want to make it clear that generally speaking, I think it’s important to prioritise criticisms of media & celebrities over like, your personal discomfort with people bringing up serious topics like racism or transphobia or etc in media, because there are people who are already uncomfortable with those harmful things being present in the media you’re consuming in the first place - you (general you, not specific you) just happen to not be affected by it in this case. If it feels uncomfortable having it brought up to you, imagine how uncomfortable people directly affected by those things are when having to confront bigotry in something that should be fun and easy entertainment like a Star Wars movie.

I kinda wish that I didn’t let early tumblr girls talk me out of watching the original L Word years ago (the last season came out I think the year I found THAT side of tumblr, and they were all talking about how annoyingly white it is, which is true, but it’s still not a HORRIBLE show), if only because of how the L Word is literally the only show of it’s kind, and the only one to currently exist (despite all the “progress” gays have made in media, right????) that really showcases women having relationships with women. And that literally being the premise. 

There are so many shows that feature things like single ladies trying for love or a group of friends and their wild and wacky relationships, that are so heterosexual and blah. It’s like, the fact that the L Word is literally about women loving women, and all the complicated and tragic and beautiful ways that can exist is so important. 

Watching it a few years ago after understanding my sexuality better really made me appreciate the simple fact that all of the women date WOMEN. Like, I remember watching the show so casually, and enjoying it the way ppl enjoy like Friends or the Office or some shit. It was the first time I watched a show where I didn’t feel like I’d have to tolerate the hetero  nonsense of a girl being a dumbass for some dude. And I didn’t realize how CRAVED I was for that type of casual representation of gay women dating until I HAD it. After watching it, any show that didn’t feature lesbians felt like it was missing something. 

As many (boy do I mean MANY) flaws as the show has (same with the reboot), there is just such a relaxing experience of just being able to watch someone with lesbians. And yes it’s bad and some of the plot points are infuriating and contrived. And the show, imo, tries too hard to be so much, but it only tries that hard because there are literally zero other shows like it. The biggest benefit of the L Word is just watching a show with no (for the most part) heterosexuality. 

I think it’s kinda like that feeling of watching something and feeling represented in it, you know? Or, rather, of seeing it so normalized. Because to these women, them dating women is normal. It’s like when you watch shows that are all Black and you can just relax knowing you don’t have to hold out for a token. Because your experience isn’t treated like a token; it’s nuanced and fleshed out and diverse and NORMAL. 

Like, that’s what I love about the L Word and unless it gets like aggressively racist or fucked up, Imma keep tuning in to see dykes doing dyke shit.

Lalo has his own little restaurant. No one knows how it stays afloat with the erratic way Lalo’s leading it, but it seems his family’s somehow just absolutely loaded, so he can afford it. Honestly sometimes it feels like he just uses it to fuck around with new recipes. Like there’s no real rhyme or reason to what he’s doing, but everyone loves his food, he’s really good with the patrons and if he parties the whole night through then it doesn’t matter cuz the next morning the kitchen still looks spick and span and Lalo’s awake and chipper, ready for the next day! How does he do it? No one knows, especially not his staff. But when someone asks, he just laughs it off and changes the subject and oh my god he’s so charming how could anyone resist him? -

Lalo’s still on the antisocial spectrum and manic af in this AU, so his approach to relationships and emotions is a bit different than your neurotypical one. He seems to have a penchant for breaking rules, can be manipulative at times, and certain things don’t affect him the way you’d expect. But most of the time you wouldn’t even know, cuz generally he’s a really affable guy who’s a lot of fun to be around. He’s genuinely trying not to step on anyone’s toes. That being said, you don’t like him then yeah, he don’t give two shits. -

Nacho used to be part of some gang, but got out in time. He now studies business or something like that. He’s super ambitious and keeps badgering his papá about investing into technical improvements that would make his shop more effective and streamlined. Manuel gets heart burn every time Nacho runs the numbers by him. He’s been running the shop for longer than Nacho is alive, he’s not gonna contract new debts after it took him so long to pay everything off...! And Nacho insists that’s how business WORKS, it’s all about investment and growth. Manuel says with a smile that when the shop is Nacho’s, he can stuff it with all the novelty apparatuses that he wants, but he’ll have to wait until Manuel is no more, and Nacho is like papá don’t be so overdramatic...!! And Manuel laughs and pats Nacho’s back because actually he’s really proud of his son and the fact that he’s so concerned with the shop and they’re HAPPY GODDAMMIT -

For some reason this AU doubles as a modern AU as well. Which means smartphones exist. Nacho spends. SO much time on Instagram. Photos of his car. Photos of Nacho leaning against his car. Gym selfies. All over the damn place. And Lalo doesn’t understand insta cuz he’s a tech averse king, but he still secretly checks out Nacho’s blog all the time cuz yummy! Sometimes he comments on Nacho’s posts with a bunch of. really weird emojis, half of which don’t mean what Lalo thinks they mean, and Nacho thinks it’s cringe af. -

They’ve been having this thing going on for about a year and they’re both suuuper casual about it, like, SO casual, especially Nacho, wow he is so incredibly low key about this, like he is not too all over this or anything, just the right amount of relaxed, laid back, so cool, yeah. -

Just that Lalo is actually incredibly flirty all the time and courts the hell out of Nacho, he’s almost a bit gentleman-like about it, almost a bit old-school, and Nacho thinks that’s kinda dope and the way Lalo treats him like he’s the sexiest thing on earth sometimes comes across as a little condescending but there’s something about it, too, that makes Nacho sometimes lie awake at night thinking about it, brushing his thumb over his lower lip and thinking about the way Lalo pulls him in for kisses. -

When Lalo picks Nacho up from the gym, Nacho smiles when he sees him. When Lalo cracks a crude joke about making people swallow condoms, Nacho chuckles. When Lalo makes him food, Nacho enjoys it. When they walk along the sidewalk in the evening, Nacho casually bumps into Lalo and Lalo puts an arm around Nacho. When Lalo is close, Nacho feels comfortable, and warm, and drawn to him. -

Nacho has had a couple of girl- and boyfriends, but he’s only ever introduced Manuel to his girlfriends. Manuel’s known that Nacho’s into boys ever since he came home early to teenage Nacho and Domingo sitting on the living room couch 6 ft apart with their shirts rumpled and their faces red as beet. But Nacho didn’t seem to want to talk about it, so Manuel respected that. He’s a bit concerned cuz he’s afraid Nacho feels like he can’t talk to him, but he wouldn’t wanna push him. -

So all of Lalo’s attempts to meet papá Varga have been met by Nacho with stone-walling and general avoidance. -

But Lalo’s a very family oriented person so he just decides to make it a surprise dinner! At first Manuel is a bit wary cuz alright, what’s going on, who is this guy? But then Lalo turns up the charm and he’s just one of these guys who are absolutely stellar at wooing older ppl. So he keeps charming circles around Manuel with food and jokes, and Manuel kinda starting to like this guy, and when Manuel wants to get himself some more beer- nonono you stay put Sr. Varga, I’m gonna take care of this for you - and then they get to the part of the evening where Manuel tells childhood stories about Nacho like how he cried when he lost his first tooth and Lalo is just ab-so-lute-ly ENTHRALLED by it all and before you know it he and Manuel are BFF. -

all the while Nacho just. SEETHES in his corner. -

Manuel leaves and Lalo and Nacho start cleaning up the kitchen, and they’re very quiet until Nacho just goes “are you going to tell me what the hell all that was about?” and Lalo’s like “???” and Nacho’s just. “That little sing-and-dance you just did there? Like. What’s your end-game here. If this was some kind of attempt to get to me through my, dad, to, idk, somehow get emotional leverage over me, istg...!” And Lalo’s gets honestly serious and looks and Nacho all earnest-like... “man... is it really that hard to believe that it’s important to me that your dad likes me...?” and then he goes “you know what, Ignacio, you seem upset. Why don’t you just go home and leave the kitchen to me, yeah?” and so Nacho does, and he’s really angry at Lalo, and he doesn’t really get what just happened there. -

a couple days later his dad calls him and Nacho is kinda concerned but Manuel doesn’t pick up on it, he’s just like “Mijo, I just. Wanted to say how important that was to me, to meet your boyfriend, he’s a really nice y-...nice man.” (Nacho notices the gap where the “young” should have been lmao) and actually Manuel is trying to be like “Mijo, I am supportive of you please notice that I am trying to tell you that I think this is super okay!” but Nacho is so busy being confused cuz he’s never referred to Lalo as his boyfriend in his head even though they’ve been at this for over a year. So Nacho’s kinda monosyllabic and like “so. he didn’t upset you or anything?” and Manuel’s like “noo, he was really friendly. You didn’t give him a hard time, did you, Ignacio...??” Manuel gets all stern and fatherly...!! “Let me tell you one thing. Not a single one of your girlfriends has ever been this polite or interested in me. This man, he’s being serious about you. Maybe it’s time to stop being cautious.” -

and that’s when it starts to dawn on Nacho that that’s. Honestly all there is to it. Lalo wasn’t trying to manipulate him or whatever. He honestly just noticed that Manuel is an important part of Nacho’s life, and wanted to connect with that. And that is- actually. really sweet of him, what the fuck?!? -

Nacho lays awake again that night and notices that there’s something going on in his chest, like something big and warm blooming there and oh my fucking god you can’t be SERIOUS this is RIDICULOUS he’s way too old for this shit, AND way too worldly-wise and all that! -

So Nacho drives by Lalo’s place the other day and asks him whether he wants to go for a drink and so they go to a bar and sit there in silence for a moment until Nacho goes “my dad asked about you” and Lalo chuckles and is like “yeah? at least someone who misses me!” and Nacho rolls his eyes but he’s kinda got it coming now. Anyway, so, Nacho starts explaining that his dad is the most important person in his life, and he is soft and sweet and precious and a national treasure that must be protected at all costs and if someone was to hurt him and all that jazz. And Lalo’s like, yeah, no, I get it. Family is everything. And your dad is a really cool guy.  The problem is that for Nacho, it’s just been him and Manuel against the world for so long, he’s gotten kinda prickly about letting anyone else get close to his dad. But maybe this is good, and maybe, oh god he doesn’t really wanna think about it in that much detail, but like, Lalo gets it, and they leave the bar together and Lalo immediately gets out his phone and calls Manuel like “Sr. Varga, I’ve been wondering how you’ve been doing! What, Nachito? He’s doing fine. No, nooo, he’s not been mean at all. Couldn’t if he tried. Well, I hope you have a great evening. Yeah, talk to you soon!” and Lalo’s just absolutely obnoxious about this, winking at Nacho and everything and Nacho sighs and accepts his punishment. (Later Lalo’s gonna be like “of course you were right, I did have ulterior motives. I was just trying to butter you up for the dinner I have planned with my uncle Hector!” and Lalo keeps talking about how much he loves his tio and how he’s basically a father figure to him and such a great guy. But then they meet him and Lalo only introduces Nacho as “a friend”, and Hector is this grumpy old guy who hates absolutely everyone and everything, can’t go two sentences without being racist, sexist or homophobic. And Nacho’s like aaalright, guess I gotta deal with THIS now. But they don’t meet him that often so it’s alright.) -

OH but Manuel is still a BIT conservative about SOME things?? Like, he’s fine with Nacho having a boyfriend, but does he have to be so. you know. old...? Like. He’s not your sugar daddy, right Ignacio...? You’re not expecting him to keep you, right Ignacio...??? And Nacho is kinda pissy because UHM?? the implications?? He would never?? He’s nobody’s trophy boyfriend. He does like getting paraded around like one every now and then but he’s not. He buys his own damn stuff. But yeah sorry Nacho, that’s just how parents are sometimes lmao -

ANYWAY the point is, they. They care. Nacho cares Lalo. And seeks out his company on his own accord without any outside influences forcing him to. And Lalo cares Nacho. And they kinda start to accept that this is. a thing. And Nacho learns to accept that he can let himself feel save and comfortable around Lalo. And they’re just regular ass boyfriends. Who go on vacation together. Who have just fantastic sex without any coercion or backstabbing involved. Who fall asleep on the couch watching movies together. Who celebrate each other’s birthdays. All that freaky shit!!! 😭😭😭

What kind of interaction would you want to see between characters who don’t already interact with each other in-game? when/if we get p2 changeling route i wanna see more... meaningful(?) interactions between her and the other healers!! i thought it was pretty fun seeing her just constantly like “AHH DEMON” around them in p1 but like..... come on...... give me more than that...... i think it would be nice if she actually tried to connect with them more, cuz in p1 at least they definitely do try to cooperate and... idk try to understand each other in some way? her being purely antagonistic towards them is. meh.

wait i guess that doesnt count cuz they do interact. i dunno thats th best i got! 11. What is something you would change, writing-wise, about either game? me n my friend were talking about this a while ago regarding artemy’s design... i think if they’re not gonna visibly give him khatange features then i think they should have made it CLEAR that he is white-passing. most characters tend to just IMMEDIATELY recognize him as a ~steppe man~ when its just like  .... .................... y’know 

it would be a little more interesting if when people are just being casually racist abt artemy’s people it’s because they didn’t recognize him as being khatange so he can call them out on it. imagine them fumbling around like “oh, uh, sorry, i couldn’t tell by looking at you” or something like that. cuz i mean lets be honest rubin’s little rant abt the kin distracting isidor felt real out of pocket. idk i mean the microaggressions constantly being tossed by artemy were ROUGH but they don’t fit.... his appearance. it would make way more sense if ppl were just saying racist shit around him either bc they didn’t know he was khatange or bc since he’s white-passing they think they can get away with it? (im lightskin and you would not believe how many ppl think they can just talk abt how they hate black culture around me just bc i look the way i do) i know alot of folk have issues with him not being visibly... ✨ETHNIC✨ which is valid and salute all the folk drawing nonwhite artemy o7 but i really think it would’ve been okay if they had actually taken his appearance into account when writing his interactions with others? this is a bit of an aside but most media with lightskin black characters they’re portrayed as aracial instead of facing any kind of prejudice, and in my own life we def don’t deal with what darkskin folks do but we have a different set of shit to deal with from others. .. so personally i feel like it would’ve been interesting if they explored that a bit more with artemy, but alas. 4. Which ending? Utopian, Termite, or Humble? Diurnal or Nocturnal? How do you feel about the endings in general? i haven’t finished p1 yet but termite termite termite. fuck da polyhedron. aglaya gets 2 live and the kids inherit the earth. i’ve complained abt p2 endings enough for .... at least this year so i won’t get too deep into it but i personally prefer diurnal. that game took alot out of me so i enjoyed being able to talk to all the characters i met along the way and see where things were going forward. i love the idea of the children ruling the town and the surviving bound rebuilding everything that had been destroyed and changing it into something new.

if ipl had handled writing the kin better than they did then i probably would like nocturnal more, but even then i feel like that ending was really nonsensical with everyone walking out into the steppe and.. blah blah blah you know the rest >_> i know things are being rebuilt in this ending but despite that i feel so disconnected from what’s going on. the kin getting their land back should be a victory but it doesn’t really feel like one and i hate that.

being in school to become an english teacher rn i’m really aware of how political an english language arts classroom can be in the us and how if they aren’t taught right, they can be dangerous and detrimental to Black and Brown students (is teaching grammar as Standard English and correcting AAVE as thought it’s incorrect or the fact that canonical teaching texts are whitewashed and straight and men) so a lot of the work i do is constantly unlearning certain social norms and learning to be better for my future students (knowing that i am a cis white woman). i think a lot of white people don’t realize that being anti-racist is a constant and you have to constantly learn and check yourself. your post breaks my heart bc i never want my students to feel that way about me. i know it’s not your job to teach me, and you are under no obligation to answer this, but is there anything that comes to mind that might help white people push past that barrier you keep encountering? (when i say i work at unlearning everyday i def don’t mean i’m done reformed r*cist. we live in a society built on white supremacy and it’s so ingrained that half of the time people who do not experience the oppression have to learn to how deeply it’s rooted. i come from a small town so i’m a little late to learning. and being an ally or an activist is a constant action rather than a stagnant label. i suppose i would like to know, sincerely, how to better be active rather than performative.)

i think the most obvious thing to do is . ..  just believe people of colour . if they say ‘ hey . . this person seems racist ‘ or ‘ i don’t like this vibe . . ‘ . don’t downplay it or minimise it , or LAUGH IT OFF or assure them they’re wrong . maybe it’s just me , but i honestly think sometimes i just get a Weird Feeling from someone , and no they haven’t done anything outrightly ‘ racist ‘ but they do little weird things , or treat me Slightly differently than they’ll treat their white friends . . and it’s not enough for me to say ‘ you’re a racist ‘ , but it’s enough for me to be like ‘ i kinda get a racist vibe from them . ‘ and i wish more white people believed me when i said that . suddenly every white person is a subject matter expert on racism . objectively , white people know you can’t discriminate against race . they know , for the most part , not to say racial slurs or wear other cultures clothes . they know that . but it’s the smaller more casual bits of racism that they just don’t see and will never see , and more importantly . . never believe . if i have a feeling somebody doesn’t like me because i’m brown / a woman . . 90% of the time i’m proven to be fucking correct ! our guts have TRAINED themselves our whole lives to be on the lookout for people who don’t like us and will never like us , and will treat us differently.  so , please , believe us , if we say we get a weird feeling from someone.

also . . white people listen to white people . if your friend says a racial slur constantly , don’t laugh with them . don’t stay silent. don’t just stare at them . ask them why they said that . make them uncomfortable , just like they make people of colour uncomfortable . stop lowering ur standards when it comes to friends and ppl ur with  , too ! stop letting them get away with that stuff ! it isn’t just up to people of colour to educate u , but u can educate other white ppl !

and please stop inviting me to events that are primarily white ! workplaces are white ! parties are white ! i have to Rearrange myself for every primarily white place i go to , and guess what . . that’s a lot of places !!!! i had to tell a couple of my friends very seriously , ‘ look i appreciate the invite , but everyone there is going to be white ‘ and i’m telling u 1000% right now , that isn’t EVER going to be a safe space for a person of colour . never ever ever.

please be more aware of how many white people there are in a place versus how many people of colour are there . think about it this way . . if u identify as a female , would u feel safe being in a space that’s All Men or predominantly just Men and then a lot of ‘ not like the other girls ‘ type of girls ? no . u probably wouldn’t . it’s exactly the same when ur the only poc in a room /  space . 

i’m not a teacher nor do i know anything about teaching , so i can’t give u advice on what to do in a classroom . also , i’m not ‘ all sayer ‘ on things race , by any means . and i never will be . this is just my Experience and my thoughts and my personal views . i will never claim to say this for all people of colour .

I genuinely SIMPLY do not vibe with Marisha and her character Beau in this new campaign. I do not trust white ppl with characters of color and the critical role fandom in general is just white as hell so they defend her white ass to the death because Gay Disaster Lesbian OC so it’s GOOD AND UR A PIECE OF SHIT IF U THINK OTHERWISE!!!!

She’s a white woman portraying a brown gay character who is hyperaggressive and hypersexual which really makes u 🤔. Beau apparently also has a criminal delinquent childhood background and an abusive, dysfunctional, toxic family too who kicked her out and disowned her! This whole thing reeks of bad character designing riddled with angst and pain bc white content creators have a weird voyeuristic fetish to inflict suffering on characters of color (that usually has racist stereotypes on top of it). If people had a brain cell they’d recognize this whole mashup of a story on a character of color is offensive as fuck. And if you put a side by side comparison to Marisha’s other white character Keyleth and how her personality and backstory differs? This sweet, shy, goody two shoes white oc? Fucking laughable.

I couldn’t be bothered to go into the nuisance of their character arcs and I def don’t give a shit because the fact is Marisha has a racist depiction of an oc she’s playing as and I am not here to entertain it in the slightest.

And while I delved into it prior, lest we forget, overwhelmingly, white content creators LOVE making brown/black paper dolls and slapping on eurocentric features on them in some way or another because we can’t have them Too Brown/Black. The casual racism is so blatant. (and in this context for beau brown skin/bright deep blue eyes)

So yea, I find her character problematic and annoying. I do not enjoy watching her character and I find it extremely distasteful. Marisha on her own is annoying 2 but honestly if she stayed in her lane like the first season she’s at least tolerable lol
