Not to continue the w the dilf love but you guys have done such a good job writing matthias because it’s very difficult to seperate his human flaws (sees Linc as an extension of himself and what he wants to achieve, talks *around* apologies but doesn’t actually give them etc.) with speculation about whether this makes him a *dangerous* person.

Someone can be a bad father without being an irredeemable human being, and I’m constantly asking myself reading these last couple chapters about whether I believe his love for Linc and Silvia to be genuine - and I do! I just think it’s irrevocably tied to what he seeks to achieve in regards to the Power, and it makes for really fun reading to go yeah, there’s lots of reasons to suspect this guy, but I don’t think Rowan is incorrectly identifying his pain and love as genuine.

wow i love this so much. it's so true! there are layers to all humans, and just because they fail in one area doesn't necessarily mean they're irredeemable in all areas. He's a very gray character, and it makes him super fun to write. Glad you're enjoying it!!

Devyn respects Mason's clear boundaries about feelings, and was willing to keep her Big Crush under wraps for his comfort. She has always been willing to sacrifice parts of herself to fit more comfortably for others. (Hello, unaddressed abandonment and self-esteem issues from Mommy Dearest.) And she was seriously trying to convince herself through most of Book 3 that it wasn't the L-word.

Well, she at least wouldn't say it out loud, but it was clear to everyone else that everyone action she made has been screaming "I love you. I love you. I love you." The softer Mason acted towards her, the harder it was to tell herself it was just the biggest crush known to the living world.

When she finally admitted it to herself, while kissing Mason, that she truly is in love, she feel unimaginable relief!!! Being honest with herself (even though she has no plans to tell Mason unless he says it first) is the first *happy* acceptance of feelings she experiences throughout all of Book 3. She hasn't felt that "light" in a very long time!

Sexuality Headcanon: straight Gender Headcanon: cis A ship I have with said character: i KNOW i said i headcanon her as straight because she just has that energy to me, but i still like sumitaba. i don't think it has anything to stand on though, i just think it's cute! a more serious answer would be sumi/ryuji, because come on. they're both jocks. they can bond over so much, and ryuji is totally into the type of girl that she is besides that. i think he can help bring her out of her shell a bit more too when she's trying to find herself again! A BROTP I have with said character: i love the idea of goro and sumi eventually being friends, and only in the version of P5R that i have in my head. in THAT world, goro would have been exasperated with her during third sem antics, but would eventually allow himself to be a mentor to her especially as a fellow cognitive psience experiment and child that got manipulated by an adult. but as it stands in canon, there's just no way that akechi gives that much of a damn about her at all— people can say all they want that he chose not to kill her during that fight, but i don't believe that was for her sake at all. akechi would have done it in a heartbeat; he just didn't want to upset akira. A NOTP I have with said character: ......and on that note, akesumi. akechi is simply not interested in anyone except joker, canonically, word of god-ly, and also because i say so A random headcanon: vanadis as her true awakening is still reflective of how sumi doesn't know what her true self is, which is okay; sometimes you have to take the time to figure it out! sometimes your true self changes as you grow (hence all the other second and third awakenings). i think vanadis came out because she's still in that in-between of figuring it out, and her vision of rebellion is not only joker now, but also crow. she watched them rebel against this false reality and she decided to do the same. her outfit already reflects joker's— and now her persona reflects his physically while coming from the same pantheon as akechi's. General Opinion over said character: oh baby girl, they did you so dirty. they could have written you so much better. she's such an afterthought in the main game, and then third sem happens and she matters for that one moment and then never again?? i'm so fucking sorry they did that to you sumire oh my god.

You have killed yourself." like okay yes, i imagine one route is still mc doing the sacrifice play, but imagine if, in order to stop him... mc had to kill matthias.

imagine, if you will, rather than stabbing your own heart literally, you do so figuratively. you plunge the knife into the chest of the man who is half of your soul, the only one who like you, the one who'd burn the world for you...

A shaky gasp echoes around the cavern. Blood splatters across Juan's hand, steady and even, as he plunged the knife right into Matthias' chest. "You... you were my whole heart, you know that?" Juan's voice comes out in a hoarse whisper, low and mournful and broken. Sorrow fills Matthias' gaze, still so wonderful and terrible and oh so blue. He lays his hand over Wan's, palm still soft and warm despite the slickness of blood and the burn of betrayal. "And you were mine." "Ahh!" Sharp pain blossoms at the back of Juan's back. Blood trickles out of their mouth as they slump forward, in a ghost of an embrace with the man he loved, the man who holds the knife embedded in their back.

avery wears her heart on her sleeve unfortunately she’s so easy to read and so easily affirms to ppl in her life that she loves and cares about them but romantically with adam she doesn’t try to break thru his walls… like she’s trying sooo hard to love him in her usual kind ways and tamper down anything she feels cuz she’s so like. i cannot be selfish!! i am in the service of everyone!! and if i’m not imagining this then i’ll find out in time!! everything will work out with time!!

but lol yeah after the big resolution ... in that scene … if she gets one chance to be honest, and one chance to be selfish, and one chance to say she loves someone with bravery (because despite how small and scared she feels, he still called her strong) then she did take it. and yeah it paid off. and then immediately after all that she’s like 😀👍 i am strong cuz this did NOT ruin my life!!! can’t wait to go back to work!!!

It’s a hard balance to strike when you don’t want the player or characters to really feel guilty or have consequences for any of their actions!

Okumura dies? The player is shown explicitly Black Mask doing it.

Getting caught up in the hype? Again they would have gone after Okunura anyway because they stole the data in Sae’s laptop also Haru’s fiancé is cartoonishly awful, so it’s not really their fault. Also Okumura would have died anyway so it’s not really there fault.

Having a public forum where people can just make call out posts with little to know verification? Never becomes a problem.

That one part of Futaba’s confidant where you essentially break the unanimous decision rule by pursuing a target without telling anyone while the rest of the team is still reeling from Okumura’s death? That’s fucking side content WHY would anyone feel betrayed or hurt by you breaking the one rule even if there’s a reason?

You’re able to override the feelings and opinions of ALL YOUR FRIENDS and take Maruki’s deal on 2/2? Everyone just goes along with it, it’s not like there was a series of scenes before this where all the characters reaffirm their desire to return to reality in ways that culminate their character arcs, they’ll have NO OPINIONS of Joker changing his mind at all.

Like with that in mind of course they don’t have a proper confrontation wrt All That and it’s just some optional side dialogue, the player might feel bad about using Goro or being emotionally invested in him if Haru and Futaba are allowed to voice having understandable and complex feelings about the whole thing

Thank you for asking me this, friend. I would love nothing more than to write this post. 

The first thing that I loved about Edelgard was her understated confidence. She doesn't flaunt herself. She doesn't brag. But she doesn't shy away or hide herself, either. She's so calm and undeniably cool and capable.

The second thing I loved was realizing how absolutely ridiculous she is under that facade. She makes weird jokes that nobody else understands. She is extremely awkward and easily flustered by attention. She paints (badly) in secret. Her only two settings are Zero and Dramatic Declaration. Either she keeps her mouth shut tight or she busts out a speech about the moral decay of the noble class. She has no idea how to moderate the sheer intensity of her personality. She has no idea how to be a Normal Teenager but gets so swept up in almost childlike excitement over things like the White Heron ball and naming the Black Eagle Strike Force. She takes even fun too seriously because she takes everything too seriously.

What I also love about Edelgard is that her flaws and her strengths are the same. Her secretiveness and her paranoia are exactly what have enabled her to survive so long and to succeed in taking down the Slithers. But they're also maladaptive coping mechanisms that alienate her from potential allies. Her intensity and focus on her goals, her sense of moral outrage at systematic injustice, her desire to make her life and her inevitable death worthwhile and her desperation to see Fodlan change for the better, these are things that make her wonderful, inspiring. 

They're also the things that give her blind spots, that make her lose perspective on the cost of her actions, that make her too quick to sacrifice herself and all she cares about. She's the opposite of perfect: she's emotionally complex, fascinatingly morally grey, fraught with sharp edges that can't be sanded away without losing the things that make her so compelling.

And on top of all of that, at both her best and her worst, Edelgard is unapologetic, unyielding, willing to take on the wrath of the world, willing to make herself history's villain. She knows that she will win no popularity contests. She knows that she might die friendless, unmourned and remembered fondly by nobody, and that perhaps those who see her as a monster would not be wrong. She knows all this, and she does it anyway, shaping herself into a figurative and even literal monster if she must. 

There is also something absolutely amazing about the idea of a character who was groomed her whole life to be a villain, who was turned into the perfect weapon, using all that power to try to do good, even right under the noses of those who made her that way. 

And Edelgard at her best? Edelgard at her best works tirelessly to fix the world for everyone she knows. To make sure Linhardt and Caspar have a place. To make sure Bernadetta is supported. To make sure Hanneman's research is not in vain. To make sure Manuela and the common folk are not left behind. To make sure Hubert can find happiness. She never stops trying to learn other perspectives or adapting her plans according to the needs of those around her.

Oh. And the way she swings that giant axe around like it’s made out of cardboard. yeah.

hey icarus, if youd like to, do u have any tips for writing autistic characters and/or some common pitfalls to avoid? thanks!

ohhh that’s a great question for the start of autism acceptance month!

it’s kind of difficult to come up with an answer because i just tend to write how i think, for one, and for another autism has such a wide range of experiences that there’s no one monolithic experience.

here’s a few things, though:

i think...sensory experiences are going to be extra important for writing from an autistic point of view. how much noise or smell or the exact way something feels or tastes and the brightness or dimness of your surroundings...idk how allistics experience it but a lot of this can be overwhelming for autistic people (and other neurodivergent people!) in a way it just isn’t for neurotypicals.

so many different things count as stimming. playing with piercings. pacing. cracking your knuckles. running your hands through your hair. the sky’s the limit when it comes to stimming. flapping and spinning are great but they’re not the only types of stimming out there!

also stimming is not a compulsion! stimming is something you do to self-soothe. if your character feels anxiously compelled to do something to prevent another action from happening that is a compulsion, not a stim! which (read below) they can co-occur but just be aware that there is a difference.

it’s common for autism to have comorbidities but i feel like i don’t see it written about that often. most people know about the overlap w adhd, but it’s also really common for autistic people to have an anxiety disorder, a mood disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, gastrointestinal disorders, intellectual disability, or epilepsy. there’s a wiki page on autism comorbitidy here but it’s not terribly filled out.

there’s nothing wrong with characters being Obviously Autistic, but also like...not all autistic people are obviously autistic. we’re not inherently shy or introverted, not every autistic person has low empathy, some of us are great at masking, and a lot of us have been made at some point in time or another to stop doing things that would make us look obviously autistic.

your autistic characters should have an internal logic that is different from your allistic characters, but they should still have one. and their logic probably is greatly affected by how other people react to their autism - for example, they may cut themselves off from explaining concepts because they’ve been told once too often that people don’t care about their explanations - or on the reverse, they may over-explain because they are used to people telling them that they don’t understand.

if you’re trying to write from an autistic person’s point of view and you’re allistic, you’re going to have to think from like a sociological standpoint about how you interact with others. allistics tend to do a lot of really bizarre things under the guise of normalcy that autistic characters simply are not going to do and many won’t even understand. for example, a lot of allistics think they’re being “clear” and “honest” when they communicate through hints, passive-aggression, hyperbole, and metaphor, a lot of which is going to be lost on autistic people who, for the most part, aren’t going to hear “please mop the floor” in the sentence “the floor is dirty”.

you don’t grow out of having autism!! it would be nice to see more autistic adults - that aren’t androids or aliens. and i know that a lot of nd-coded characters have been reclaimed by the community, but you shouldn’t have your only neurodivergent character be nonhuman, that’s literally dehumanizing.

also? i hear too damn many allistics describing autistic people as “robotic” in movement, speech, or manner, and that’s so obnoxiously dehumanizing. knock it off. there’s nothing wrong with saying “flat affect” or “rigid movement”

stop with the “uwu soft baby” thing for autistic-coded teenage & adult characters, that’s so infantilizing. autistic people can and will do things that are bad or wrong, sometimes even intentionally! we are not stupid helpless babies who don’t understand anything.

i’ve been trying to figure out how to say this... it’s not uncommon for autism to effect the way we experience gender or attraction, but don’t be weird about it? being autistic does not mean we are innatey aromantic or asexual. this sort of goes hand in hand with infantalization and dehumanization in that people will sometimes portray autistics as “too stupid to understand sex or romance” or “too Intelligent (TM) to bother with sex or romance” which misrepresents both autism and asexuality & aromanticism.

i’m sure i’m forgetting things so i’m maintagging this so people can add on with things they’ve seen that particularly bother them in fiction or that they wish they say more of! ty for asking :)
