Please help this homeless trio
We are
Joe (he/him) is in his 60's, disabled due to medical conditions and has been homeless for months after struggling for six years to get disability benefits
Crystal (she/her) is a 30-something single mom and domestic abuse survivor. Her abusive ex currently has custody of her kid, and she was kicked out of her mother's house after a suicide attempt in June
And me, Jesse (they/them) also thirty-something, I've been homeless since March and unstably housed since the beginning of the pandemic.
The three of us met when we were all hospitalized for being suicidal, and since we're all homeless we've been doing our best to take care of each other since we got out of the hospital. I cannot describe how glad I am to not be doing this alone anymore, but we're still really struggling.
Occasionally, one of our caseworkers will come through with a motel voucher for a few days, but for the most part we've been having to move all over the county to stay in the cheapest motels/airbnb's we can find, which isn't conducive to finding work, which both Crystal and I are able and eager to do as soon as we can.
We've been paying for said cheap motels mainly by begging, and the occasional bit of day labor we can pick up. We've been doing this all together for just over a month now, and we need help.
So how can you help us?
What we need most is stable shelter, and we need money to get that. Motel prices fluctuate, but where we're staying right now is just under $100/night.
On the first of next Sept we'll all three have food stamps, but until then we also need help with food. Even enough to buy the makings for pb&j would be a blessing
If we can raise enough money to stay in the same place for even just two weeks would allow Crystal and I to go about finding work, but most days we wake up not knowing where we're gonna sleep that night.
Tl;dr three homeless people trying to survive need help to find stable housing, have nowhere to go after tomorrow morning (post written on 8/24/21)

Any help and boosts are much appreciated!
If you have any questions, or if you're in the Seattle area and want to offer non-monetary aid (socks, underwear, toiletries, etc), just send me a message and I'll answer as fast as I can

HARRY STYLES CONCERTS ARE HIS FANS' MET GALA
Tumblr media
The glam-rock pop idol is taking over TikTok, one immaculate outfit reveal at a time.
By Maura Brannigan for Fashionista.com
Twenty minutes before Harry Styles is set to appear onstage at Chicago's monster United Center, I find myself speaking to a group of concertgoers dressed as if they're en route to Stevie Nicks Night at Studio 54. The foursome made the pilgrimage earlier that day from Fort Wayne, Ind., a three-plus hour drive from the venue at which Styles is headlining two sold-out stadium shows as part of his rescheduled "Love on Tour." They're dripping in sequins and feathers, with a rainbowed assemblage of jewelry, boas and itty-bitty handbags that no doubt had been curated in the days prior.
One of the showgoers, Josie Tippmann, begins telling me about her look for the evening, which she plotted around a clompy pair of patchwork boots. "These boots just chose me," she says over the thrum of opener Jenny Lewis. Her makeup, meanwhile, is "Watermelon Sugar"-inspired, all glitter and tangy shades of bubblegum. "Anything for Harry."
Swirling all around us are folks just as well-coiffed: The mile-long merch lines come stacked with cowboy hats, slick suiting and no shortage of banana suits, a subtle wink at Styles' One Direction days. That this is just as distinct a sartorial phenomenon online as it is that night at the United Center should come as no surprise — it's 2021, after all, and fans gather across social media platforms with as much enthusiasm as they do here, reunited and vaccinated, by the tens of thousands.
Lately, that platform de rigueur is TikTok. Styles fans are posting what they call "outfit reveals" under the hashtag "#hslotoutfit," wherein showgoers unveil their concert-day ensembles against a mashup of Styles' own songs. According to data from the app, the trend has legs: From Aug. 15 to Sept. 30, #hslotoutfit had over 37 million views in the U.S. and 7,000 videos published; in this same window, video views on the hashtag grew from less than 100,000 per day to an average of 1.5 million per day.
Of course, Styles is far from the only entertainer to evoke fashion fervor through his fandom, let alone the only one to mobilize supporters on the internet. Consider K-pop marvel Blackpink, in which each of the four members inked blue-chip partnerships with four prestigious luxury houses, or Kanye West, whose own prowess landed him both a standalone clothing company and a separate diffusion line for Gap. With her LVMH-backed Fenty empire, Rihanna is her own case study altogether.
But for this tour, Styles' fans have adopted fashion as being entirely synonymous with the artist's own cult of personality, to an emotional degree. His fandom's clothes mean something to them, and with Styles, that's kind of the point: For what does he stand for as an artist if not a liberating crush of self-expression?
"People joke and say that one, [Styles] concerts aren't even concerts anymore, they're fashion shows, and two, the fans dress better than him at this point," says Nissy Simao, a 23-year-old Los Angeles-based social media producer whose own #hslotreveal video racked up almost half a million views and 120,000 likes. "Harry has definitely shown us as fans that we can be free to be whoever we want to be and love whoever we want to love. That shows in how we all collectively dress for his shows."
A long-time One Direction fan, Simao saw Styles in Denver in early September; she currently has tickets to see him in Seattle, too, and hopefully, for one of his three LA tour dates. For her first concert of the three, her look came together more last-minute than she would've liked. But come together it did.
"I'm a big thrifter, so I knew, ideally, I wanted to thrift my outfit," she says. Two days before the show, Simao had found a black vest that was almost identical to the embellished pink number Styles had worn for his first tour date in Las Vegas. He had gone shirtless underneath, however, which Simao herself couldn't replicate. "I scrambled to find something fun. The day of the concert, I thrifted teal sequined fabric and turned it into a tube top." The cherry on top was a light-up cowboy hat — "so he could see me in the crowd, of course."
Styles' wardrobe of late (as curated by stylist Harry Lambert) is bodied by a warm, vintage quality, with a glam-rock opulence peppered in at precise moments. As Ruth Smart, a 28-year-old playwright, songwriter and creator in Chicago, tells me, his fandom is taking notes.
"So many fans take his lead when they experiment with their own fashions," she says. "They learn to crochet so they can make their own replica of a cardigan he wore once for a rehearsal. They screen-print their own T-shirts that match ones he's worn. They get tailored suits and strands of pearls."
Like Simao, Smart has multiple tour dates lined up for this fall, including one show in Chicago and another in Milwaukee come November. For her first, she channeled Styles' "Fine Line" album cover with a taffeta blouse and high-waisted trousers, "plus a little dash of camp and 1970s disco flair." This sort of tribute creates a fierce bond between artist and audience, she says: "Fans feel closer to their favorites, or even a little bit powerful, when they dress like them."
Still, not all those camping out for "Love on Tour" are doing so in a glorified Styles cosplay. The majority are wearing what I can only (and slightly reductively) describe as being just damn good outfits. (This is excluding a subset of enthusiastic dads, who are known to escort their younger children to Styles' concerts in golf shirts.) While the full stylistic spread exists on TikTok, where #hslotoutfit lives and breathes, it's also on Instagram, thanks to an unidentified 19-year-old who runs the highly-followed account @hslotfashionhq.
"K," a Los Angeles-based college student who agreed to speak with me under the condition that they do so anonymously, only just launched the page last month, during the first show of "Love on Tour." At press time, the account had more than 12,000 followers and 1,870 posts, figures that are growing exponentially with each of Styles' tour dates. The account is fully user-generated, with showgoers simply DMing K photos of their outfit, which they then repost.
"I felt fans should have a way of showing off the outfits they put so much effort into," says K. "I know that many fans love to refer to his concerts as 'our Met Gala.'"

In her unauthorized book, Lynette Rice explores the stories behind some of the ABC drama's biggest moments, including — in this exclusive excerpt — the factors that led to McDreamy's shocking death.
In How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, author Lynette Rice recounts the ABC medical drama’s eventful 16-year history, revealing new details behind some of the show’s biggest departures. Included in the unauthorized, 320-page oral history (St. Martin’s Press, Sept. 21, $29.99) is a chapter that offers new insight into leading man Patrick Dempsey’s shocking exit in season 11 of the Shonda Rhimes-created drama. In the chapter, Rice speaks with Dempsey’s co-stars and exec producers who were present during filming of his final days on Grey’s Anatomy, and reveals claims of “HR issues” that contributed to the death of his alter-ego, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd.
“There were HR issues. It wasn’t sexual in any way. He sort of was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him,” recalls exec producer James D. Parriott, who was brought back to the series to oversee Dempsey’s exit.
In more than 80 interviews with current and former cast- and crewmembers, Rice, an editor-at-large at Entertainment Weekly, also explores the show’s early days, recounts the thinking behind some of its more polarizing storylines and offers exclusive details about the show’s behind-the-scenes culture.
“After 17 seasons, fans still can’t get enough of Grey’s Anatomy,” Rice tells THR. But what went down behind the scenes was just as dramatic as what viewers saw every Thursday. I’m excited for fans to read what I learned about those early days, along with what it was like to work for Shonda Rhimes, and why the drama was so freakin’ headline-prone.”
Tumblr media
Below, The Hollywood Reporter shares an excerpt — the full eighth chapter — from How to Save a Life, and tune in Friday to TV’s Top 5 for an interview with Rice about her book and the other big reveals she uncovered in her reporting for it.
(Reps for ABC, ABC Signature, Shondaland, and Dempsey declined comment on the reveals in Rice’s book.)
“He’s Very Dreamy, but He’s Not the Sun,” Or, How Grey’s Anatomy Loved — Then Learned to Live Without — Patrick Dempsey Ellen Pompeo may have played the titular role, but for many fans over many years, Patrick Dempsey was the real draw to Grey’s Anatomy. Some of it had to do with his celebrity: Dempsey was the most famous member of the original cast at the time of the pilot and brought with him quite a cult following from his 1987 movie Can’t Buy Me Love. But a lot of it was due to the way Rhimes wrote her McDreamy and how Dempsey depicted him. James D. Parriott I would say, “The guy would never say that,” and Shonda would say, “He’s McDreamy. He’s the perfect man. He would say that.” I’d say, “Okay. It’s your show.” Eric Buchman Shonda had a very clear idea of how important it was to keep Derek as this almost idealized love interest, not just for Meredith but for the audience. Naturally, the writers—especially writers who had been working on one-hour dramas for a while—were like, “Well, maybe have McDreamy make a big mistake in surgery and kill somebody. Or he develops an addiction of some kind. What is his deep, dark secret?” Shonda was very insistent: that’s not the character we do that with. Even when you find out he’s married, that was done in a very sympathetic way that kept him being a hero. He was wronged by his spouse and in spite of it all he was still gonna give his marriage a second chance. Stacy McKee Shonda was protective of McDreamy, but it was really with an eye toward being protective of Meredith. I don’t think the two were separate from one another. I don’t think she wanted to put something out there that maybe on the surface might seem a little frivolous. At its core, there was something really substantial that she wanted to say. She wanted to be very specific about the type of relationship values that she put out there. Tony Phelan I was in editing with Shonda once, and it was the scene where Meredith and Derek had broken up. He comes over and she’s like, “I can’t remember the last time we kissed.” And he says, “I remember. You were wearing this and you smelled of this …”
Joan Rater “Your shampoo smelled like flowers, you had that sweater on …” He described their last kiss. Tony Phelan Typically in editing you start on Derek, then you cut to Meredith for a reaction, and then you’ll go back to him. I noticed that we weren’t ever cutting back to Meredith. I asked why. Shonda said, “Because the woman in Iowa who’s watching this show wants to believe that Patrick is talking to her, and if you cut back to Meredith, it pushes them out of it.” In those special moments, we would just lock into Derek and let him do his thing. Joan Rater And he was a master at it. Patrick Dempsey He’s the ideal man, and that’s what Shonda constructed. There’s a projection [of him] onto me when you come in contact with fans, certainly with the younger and older fans. There is a certain amount of expectation. There is a responsibility to it. It made me grow, too. There were good qualities [of his] that you work on to obtain. Off camera, Dempsey was equally as charismatic to his fellow actors, crew members, and anyone who would come to visit the set. Lauren Stamile I was going in to meet him, and I remember I had this little cardigan sweater on and I took it off before I got into the room. Dempsey is one of those people—it’s almost like there’s a light shining around his body, and you feel like you’re the only person in the room. I got so hot and I remember saying, “Gosh, I would take off my sweater if I had one on because I’m so hot, but I took it off.” I was just babbling. He said, “You look nice,” and I said, “You look nicer.” I felt so awkward and he was so gracious and lovely. I was having a nervous breakdown. It’s like this “it” factor. I was like, God, whatever he has, I wish I had. I think it was very obvious how nervous I was, and he went out of his way to make sure he introduced me to everybody and made sure I felt comfortable, which he certainly didn’t have to do. But he did. Joan Rater He knew I had a giant crush on him, and he loved it. And when we’d go to table reads—I was an actress at one point in my life—they would always give me Meredith if Ellen wasn’t there. And I’d be getting my chicken tenders at craft services before the table read and he’d come up behind me and say, “Are you reading Meredith?” in my ear, like, so sexy. I’d be like, Oh my God. I mean, I could barely … I could not look at him. Tina Majorino I worked with Patrick a ton. I love him so much. We had a really great time working together. I think he’s such a great actor and he really made me laugh a lot. I feel like we had a good dynamic in scenes together, and it was always fun to play opposite him. Yes, he’s that charismatic in real life. Yes, his hair is that awesome. Yes, he is dreamy up close.
Chandra Wilson Patrick Dempsey will forever be known as Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy. Derek Shepherd is a permanent part of television history.
Norman Leavitt He is a big, personable guy.
Jeannine Renshaw We all love Patrick. Patrick is a sweetheart. If I saw him on the street, I’d give him a hug. I love the guy.
Mark Wilding I’ve always had a soft spot for Patrick. He really does try to do the right thing. Brooke Smith, who played Dr. Erica Hahn, remembers how Dempsey defended her when the decision was made to fire her from the show in 2008. Brooke Smith I remember calling him and saying, “Oh my God, they said they can’t write for me anymore, so I guess I’m leaving.” And he was like, “What are you talking about? You’re the only one they’re writing for.” Which at that time, it kind of did feel that way. But I guess someone didn’t like that. They gave me a statement [to release, about her departure] and I never said it. Patrick said that he actually took it out of his jacket on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and read the statement. He won’t let me forget it. He was like, “I defended you, see?” And it was true.
By season eleven, however, fans saw a disturbing break in MerDer’s once unbreakable bond. Six episodes had gone by without a peep from Derek, who was supposedly in Washington, D.C., where he had apparently made out with a research fellow. Fans began threatening to bolt if their hero didn’t return soon to Seattle. “I have never missed one episode,” wrote a fan on Dempsey’s Facebook page. “But I swear if [Rhimes] kills you off I’m done.” But there was a critical reason for Derek’s strange absence: behind the scenes, there was talk of Dempsey’s diva-like fits and tension between him and Pompeo. To help manage the explosive situation, executive producer James D. Parriott was brought back in to serve as a veritable Dempsey whisperer.
Patrick Dempsey [That] was the first year that I haven’t been in every episode. I [was] in every episode since the pilot— close to 250 episodes. That [was a] huge run. James D. Parriott Shonda needed an OG to come in as sort of a showrunner for fourteen episodes. There were HR issues. It wasn’t sexual in any way. He sort of was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him. He had this hold on the set where he knew he could stop production and scare people. The network and studio came down and we had sessions with them. I think he was just done with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats.
Jeannine Renshaw There were times where Ellen was frustrated with Patrick and she would get angry that he wasn’t working as much. She was very big on having things be fair. She just didn’t like that Patrick would complain that “I’m here too late” or “I’ve been here too long” when she had twice as many scenes in the episode as he did. When I brought it up to Patrick, I would say, “Look around you. These people have been here since six thirty a.m.” He would go, “Oh, yeah.” He would get it. It’s just that actors tend to see things from their own perspective. He’s like a kid. He’s so high energy and would go, “What’s happening next?” He literally goes out of his skin, sitting and waiting. He wants to be out driving his race car or doing something fun. He’s the kid in class who wants to go to recess.
Patrick Dempsey It’s ten months, fifteen hours a day. You never know your schedule, so your kid asks you, “What are you doing on Monday?” And you go, “I don’t know,” because I don’t know my schedule. Doing that for eleven years is challenging. But you have to be grateful, because you’re well compensated, so you can’t really complain because you don’t really have a right. You don’t have control over your schedule. So, you have to just be flexible.
Longtime Crew Member Poor Patrick. I’m not defending his schtick. I like him, but he was the Lone Ranger. All of these actresses were getting all this power. All the rogue actresses would go running to Shonda and say, “Hey, Patrick’s doing this. Patrick’s late for work. He’s a nightmare.” He was just shut out in the cold. His behavior wasn’t the greatest, but he had nowhere to go. He was so miserable. He had no one to talk to. When Sandra left, I remember him telling me, “I should’ve left then, but I stayed on because they showed me all this money. They just were dumping money on me.”
Patrick Dempsey It [was] hard to say no to that kind of money. How do you say no to that? It’s remarkable to be a working actor, and then on top of that to be on a show that’s visible. And then on top of that to be on a phenomenal show that’s known around the world, and play a character who is beloved around the world. It’s very heady. It [was] a lot to process, and not wanting to let that go, because you never know whether you will work again and have success again.
Jeannine Renshaw A lot of the complaining … I think Shonda finally witnessed it herself, and that was the final straw. Shonda had to say to the network, “If he doesn’t go, I go.” Nobody wanted him to leave, because he was the show. Him and Ellen. Patrick is a sweetheart. It messes you up, this business.
James D. Parriott I vaguely recall something like that, but I can’t be sure. It would have happened right toward the end, because I know they were negotiating and negotiating, trying to figure out what to do. We had three different scenarios that we actually had to break because we didn’t know until I think about three days before he came back to set which one we were going to go with. We didn’t know if he was going to be able to negotiate his way out of it. We had a whole story line where we were going to keep him in Washington, D.C., so we could separate him from the rest of the show. He would not have to work with Ellen again. Then we had the one where he comes back, doesn’t die, and we figure out what Derek’s relationship with Meredith would be. Then there was the one we did. It was kind of crazy. We didn’t know if he was going to be able to negotiate his way out of it. It was ultimately decided that just bringing him back was going to be too hard on the other actors. The studio just said it was going to be more trouble than it was worth and decided to move on.
Stacy McKee I don’t think there was any way to exit him without him dying. He and Meredith were such an incredibly bonded couple at that point. It would be completely out of character if he left his kids. There was no exit that would honor that character other than if he were to die. Patrick Dempsey I don’t remember the date [I got the news]. It was not in the fall. Maybe February or March. It was just a natural progression. And the way everything was unfolding in a very organic way, it was like, “Okay! This is obviously the right time.” Things happened very quickly. We were like, “Oh, this is where it’s going to go.”
So that was that: McDreamy would die in episode twenty-one of season eleven, even though Dempsey was in year one of his recently signed two-year contract extension. Rhimes wrote a script that was befitting of her lead’s heroic persona: she began “How to Save a Life” by having Derek witness a car crash and helping the injured. Once it appeared everyone was out of harm’s way, Derek continues on his road trip but is suddenly broadsided by a truck.
Rob Hardy (Director) The paramedics leave. He’s there by himself. He’s having a moment. The nice music is playing, and all of a sudden, bang. It comes out of nowhere, which, you know, is how accidents happen. So as opposed to watching it as a viewer, we saw the accident happen through Derek’s perspective. Derek ends up at Dillard Medical Center, a hospital far from Grey Sloan and the talented doctors who work there. His eyes are open, but his brain is severely damaged. No one hears his plea for a CT scan; he can’t speak. To help keep the episode a secret, the scenes were shot in an abandoned hospital in Hawthorne, California, about twenty-two miles from the show’s home studio in Los Feliz.
Mimi Melgaard It was really hard on all of us because it was so secretive and we had so many different locations. We shot at this closed-down hospital that was absolutely creepy haunted. All the scenes there were so sad anyway, and in this yucky-feeling haunted hospital? It was really weird. His whole last episode was really tough. Patrick Dempsey It was like any other day. It was just another workday. There was still too much going on. You’re in the midst of it—you’re not really processing it. Rob Hardy Here’s a guy who’s immobile. Now you’re inside of his head. We were trying to make that feel scary from the perspective of a person who’s used to being in control, from a person who usually has the power of life and death in his own hands. But now he doesn’t have the ability to speak on his own behalf.
Samantha Sloyan When I went to audition, I didn’t recognize any of these doctors’ names. I assumed they were just dummy sides so people wouldn’t ruin the story line or anything like that. All we knew is that we were dealing with a man who’s been in a car accident. I had no idea that it was going to be Derek. I just figured I was going to be a guest doctor and that whoever this person was who was injured, was going to be just a character on the show. Once it became clear what we were working on, I was like, Oh, my gosh. I can’t believe this is the episode I’m on.
Mike McColl (Dr. Paul Castello) I signed an NDA before they would release the script to me. I was reading it in my house, and I was like, “Oh, my God.” I didn’t tell anyone, including my agents. I just said, “This is a really great booking. It’s a great role on Grey’s.” And they didn’t know anything until it aired.
Savannah Paige Rae (Winnie) The first scene I shot was actually the sentimental scene when I’m saying, “It’s a beautiful day to save lives, right?” I’m in the hospital room with Derek and talking to him. Even though I never watched the show, I recognized the value of the episode I was in and just really took it to heart. It was so special that I got to be a part of it.
Rob Hardy [Patrick] had a lot of emotions during the whole shoot, which evolved. I think when we first started, he was very calm and cool … the same Patrick that I remembered when I worked on the show a year or so before. With each passing day, he was a lot more emotional. A lot more was on his mind, and that would show itself in different ways. The finality of the episode and for his character was setting in. You’ve become a global icon on this show and then in five, four, three, two, a day … it’s over.
James D. Parriott Patrick was very cooperative and good.
Mike McColl When I met Patrick, he’s lying on a stretcher and we’re rushing him into the ER. I just introduced myself, shook his hand, and was like, “Man, I cannot tell you what an honor it is to be the guy to take you down.” He loved it. He could not have been nicer to me and was funny through the whole shoot. He was on the table in front of me there when I cut his chest open and all that stuff. He gave me a hug at the end. It was a real privilege to be a part of TV history in that way.
Samantha Sloyan I remember him being incredibly kind. They had his neck in a brace, and he’s strapped down to the board, so there wasn’t a ton of chatting. I remember him being really kind, but it was clearly intense for him.
Stacy McKee It was such a beautiful piece of storytelling. I knew this event was going to be a really sad, horrible event for Meredith, but I also knew it was going to be the beginning of such an incredible chapter for Meredith.
Dempsey completed his final hours of shooting on a rainy night. There was no goodbye party, no goodbye cake. Maybe that’s because some cast members were left out of the loop. James Pickens, Jr., told ABC News that the cast “didn’t know a whole lot. It was kind of on the fly. So whatever information we got, we pretty much got it kind of right before it happened.”
Caterina Scorsone (Dr. Amelia Shepherd) I didn’t get to say goodbye to Patrick when he left. I do think that helped, because I’ve been using the character of Derek in my internal landscape since Private Practice. Derek was the stability in Amelia’s life. He became a father figure after they watched robbers shoot their father. When he was suddenly gone from the show, we didn’t have that closure, so I got to play it out. She’s about to use drugs again before Owen confronts her in a way that she finally talks about her feelings about losing Derek. She doesn’t end up using.
James D. Parriott The day he left, that was my last day. There was a certain sadness to it, but I think he was relieved. I mean, I think it took a toll on him, too.
Rob Hardy I didn’t see other actors showing up and saying, “Hey, it’s the last day! Wanted to come and wish you well.” I didn’t get that. It was more the Patrick show. We were in the Patrick world, and then Ellen came, and there was definitely a lot of emotion that both of them had individually … not necessarily together. It was more so her being there on the day that he died. He had his own way of being with that, and the same thing with her. It was like two people who grew up together and … here we are. They had their own way of reflecting.
Patrick Dempsey I very quietly left. It was beautiful. It was raining, which was really touching. I got in my Panamera, got in rush-hour traffic, and two hours later I was home. Big news like this doesn’t stay quiet for long. Both Michael Ausiello—who left EW in 2010 to launch the news site TVLine—and Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter learned two weeks prior to Dempsey’s final episode that he would be leaving the show. No reporter worth their salt wants to sit on a scoop—least of all one as huge as this—but Ausiello and Goldberg didn’t want to spoil the outcome for fans, so they agreed to hold the story until after the episode aired. I eventually found out, too, but in the nuttiest way imaginable: I was standing on the set of CSI: Cyber, watching Patricia Arquette talk about some droll techno-criminal. Unfortunately, the publicist also cc’d Dempsey’s manager and ABC publicist while trying to give me a major story, so I couldn’t immediately report the scoop. But I did use the information to successfully negotiate the one and only exit interview with Dempsey. Two weeks before his final episode, I met him and his publicist at Feed Body & Soul in Venice, California, for a story that would hit newsstands on April 24. He seemed a little shell-shocked and at one point choked up, but at the time he said nothing about how his on-set behavior may have contributed to his ouster. My editor, Henry Goldblatt, wanted to put him on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, but he couldn’t guarantee to ABC that no one would see it before the episode aired. Good thing we didn’t: some subscribers got the issue on the morning of Dempsey’s final episode— and one actually tweeted the story. Our PR department tried to get the tweets removed, but the cat was out of the bag: some fans found out early that McDreamy was about to be McHistory. Outlets like Variety reported how the story got out early, while our PR department released this statement: “We are surprised that an EW subscriber may have received their issue a day earlier than planned. We always try our best to bring readers exclusive news first. We would like to apologize to fans of the show that learned the news ahead of time.” Dempsey’s final episode was watched by 8.83 million viewers—the show’s largest audience since the premiere that season. Variety even pontificated whether the ratings boost was due to my exclusive with Dempsey.
Lesley Goldberg (The Hollywood Reporter) I’m used to working with networks to hold news as part of their efforts to guard against plot spoilers. But the way Patrick Dempsey’s exit was handled involved a layer of paranoia and secrecy that has been unlike anything I’ve seen in my reporting career. News that he was leaving, and his character being killed off, would have been a major story considering how big the show is domestically and internationally. However, it also would have meant spoiling the episode and, more important, damaging key relationships I’ve worked hard to build. At some point, publishing the news of Dempsey’s exit before the episode aired became an ethical question of what was more important—a big story and its subsequent traffic, which would have come no matter what, or the relationships and trust that it took years to craft. Ultimately, I still published early because EW subscribers received the issue with Lynette’s Dempsey interview before the episode aired.
Mike McColl The morning after Derek’s last episode aired, my daughter sent me a link that was on YouTube or Facebook or something. I actually pulled it up to look at it, and it was a Grey’s Anatomy showbiz cheat sheet. It asked the question “Who is the attending doctor who killed Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd?” It included a photo that I posted from the set. I had on a bloody rubber glove and was in my scrubs and mask. I never obviously would have posted this before it aired. I posted it well after the episode aired, and I [captioned it] “McDeadly.” This writer said something like, “Kill McDeadly.” Maybe that’s why the producer didn’t choose a big-name actor to be the one who killed our beloved McDreamy! I want to be ultrasensitive to these hard-core fans because it means so much to them, and I certainly didn’t mean in that case to make light of it. It’s just, I’m an actor, and I recognize it for what it is. Is everybody clear on the fact that this is just pretend and Patrick knew he was going to be leaving the show? It was just like, “God. He’s okay. He really is okay.”
Peter Horton Derek was going to be there forever with Meredith because you went through a whole journey with them. That was incredibly fulfilling. So even if he’s not there, he’s there. I don’t think any of us really worried about that going away because by then you were so invested in it. The show can last as it has for years.
Patrick Dempsey Lots of people [miss him]. “It’s good to see you alive” is the comment I get. I’m like, “Yes, I’m very much alive in reruns.” People were really invested in that relationship. I knew it would be heavy. Very happy to have moved on with a different chapter in my life.
Samantha Sloyan The montage just killed me, when Meredith says, “It’s okay, you can go.” God, I’m getting choked up just thinking about it. The chemistry they have as a pair and the way they were able to build that and sustain it! So many of these relationships are, like, “Will they, won’t they,” and then it wears thin. They sustained it for the duration of their relationship on the show, and it’s just, I think, a testament to what those two created. It was just unbelievable.
Pompeo addressed Dempsey’s departure with a tweet that focused solely on his character, not on how she spent eleven years working side by side with him: “There are so many people out there who have suffered tremendous loss and tragedy. Husbands and wives of soldiers, victims of senseless violence, and parents who have lost children. People who get up every day and do what feels like is the impossible. So it is for these people and in the spirit of resilance [sic] I am honored and excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible.” Meanwhile, fans futilely created a Change.org petition to reinstate McDempsey, while other, more desperate ones simply tweeted “We Hate You” to Rhimes.
Shonda Rhimes Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character—for Meredith, for me, and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy. Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example— happy, sad, romantic, painful, and always true—of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.
Talk about the mother (father?) of all postscripts: In November of 2020 Dempsey reprised his role as McDreamy in the season opener—but only in Meredith’s dreams. Stricken with COVID-19, an unconscious Meredith “imagined” reuniting with her husband on the beach. After talking exclusively to Deadline and saying how it was “really a very healing process, and really rewarding,” Dempsey would return for more beach-based episodes that would ultimately stand out as the best moments of season seventeen. “It was a second chance thing,” one ABC executive told me at the time. “Shonda likes a comeback. Also, they wanted him in their last season.”

2021 Road Trip Day 8
Sept 16, Thursday
States seen: Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin (new)
Knowing we had a good 8–9-hour drive ahead of us, we went and got some breakfast, then headed out the 80 through more farmland to Des Moines. Well, we didn’t actually go to Des Moines, the interstate skirts north of it, but we saw it from the freeway.
Tumblr media
This pic we took of the landscape (above) looks pretty similar to the Welcome to Iowa sign...
Tumblr media
We decided to stop in Iowa City for lunch, or more specifically, Coralville. Like many of the smaller cities we stopped in, this was a surprising little place- some kind of cool shops and restaurants. We ate at a place where our waiter looked like one of the Jonas Brothers (the one married to the Indian actress). Apparently, we were so excited about Coralville we forgot to take any pictures of it.
After that we got off the interstates and headed up through eastern Iowa and more small towns and farmland to Dubuque,
Tumblr media
...where we crossed the Mississippi river into Wisconsin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went up to Madison where we took the 94 into Milwaukee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milwaukee felt like a bigger city than anything we’d been in since Seattle. Probably because it IS a bigger city than anything we’d been in since Seattle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had the dumb luck of showing up there right as they were hosting their annual “Summerfest”, a music festival that draws thousands of young people, and crams up all the hotels. We were at what I was hoping would be a cool hotel… but my hopes were unfounded. It was not well taken care of.
We walked across the Milwaukee River and went to Lake Michigan to take some pics,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then came back and did the Riverwalk.

This was our anniversary, so we wanted a nice dinner, but I hadn’t known what was what, or where to go. We ended up at Mo’s, a Place for Steaks, where they generously got us in to the last available table. Had a great dinner and celebrated the anniversary in style. Too bad the hotel was kinda dumpy.

Food Deserts and How We Can Help
Written by: Chhy Chhy Yeak and Julia Hall // Edited by: Faith Kadoshima
Did you know that 17.7% of the U.S population live in low-income areas where the nearest supermarket is at least half a mile away (Rhone, 2019)? That’s about a fifth of our population that is struggling to get access to healthy food sources because they are living in a food desert. Food deserts are places where fresh, high quality, and affordable fruits and vegetables can be hard to get to -- especially when some people don’t have a reliable source of transportation. Not surprisingly, this problem mainly affects people in ethnic minorities such as the African American, Hispanic and Latino communities. Food deserts aren’t just areas where there is no food nearby. In fact, there may be many convenient stores close by, which adds to the problem because the ease of getting to stores that sell junk food become the major food source for these communities. This means that low-income families living in these areas must also worry about their health as rates of obesity increase from the lack of access to healthier options. Overall, the issue of food deserts not only affects one’s lifestyle, but it can become detrimental to the health and well-being of future generations in communities that need better access to nutritious food.
So, what can we do about it? How can we help? The first is simple -- be aware. Understand that this is a prevalent issue in our society and people who are living under these conditions might want to be healthy, but given their situation, access to healthy food becomes a major barrier in living the life that they want. Here are some practical ways that we can help:
1. Community Gardens
Leaders in the community can help bring people together to plant viable fruits and vegetables in plots of land. Not only can this help foster a better sense of community as people take care of the plants together, but it will also teach them skills for living a more sustainable lifestyle. Gardens are important for providing fresh, high quality food that can help alleviate the problems of food deserts because they can be more accessible for many people. Other creative gardening ideas can include using recyclable cartons as pots for plants or growing food in yards and balconies.
Check out this website to get some guidance on how to start a garden in Seattle: Growing Food in the City (seattle.gov)
2. Community Fridges
Fridges are an important means of maintaining fresh and accessible food. Community fridges are found in public spaces and they allow people to give or take food from them for free. Residents can donate food to help stock the fridges and share their goods with others. This can be especially useful in areas that have hot climates where healthy produce can easily become spoiled.
You can support your local community fridge programs! Check out the Seattle Community Fridge where they are working to help alleviate food insecurity in our community.
3. Mobile Supermarkets
If communities are not able to get transportation to grocery stores miles away, why not have the stores come to them? Mobile food trucks are able to ship goods to many different communities in a single trip. They can reach low-income communities and distribute healthy food to neighbors. Other options can also include having meal kits delivered straight to their doors with online services such as HelloFresh, Blue Apron, or Home Chef. Not only are these services convenient, but they allow people to discover new recipes that are delicious and healthy!
In Seattle, a nonprofit organization named Organic Sack Lunches delivers healthy meals for free on the streets. You can support them at OSL (oslserves.org).
In general, any methods that can get fresh and healthy produce to low-income communities will put us one step closer to achieving food equity. Accessibility to food is the fundamental issue that must be addressed in order to be able to distribute healthy food to everybody. Food deserts highlight this problem because grocery stores are major components in helping to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Yet, not everyone can afford the time and money to get to a grocery store that is miles away from their home. We can help these communities by being aware of the issue, sharing the knowledge, and taking action to help fight food insecurity. Let us support food organizations and be open minded to the struggles of these communities in order to achieve food equity and a healthy community overall.

(Note: I’m not repeating stories he’s told before and just putting them in parenthesis. I have a lot more videos to go until I’m caught up so that would save me a lot of time. If he gives details I never heard from him before, I will type those.)
“I Figured Something Out” Sept 24, 2020 Speaks
- Says he likes to make videos pointing out his flaws because when he realizes he was doing something wrong, he likes to point it out and move on. You shouldn’t bottle things up. - Says when he started making these video he was angry and over time he winded down. - Begs his follower to look into the Regina / Adam thing. Says Regina pretended to be a transgender person named Adam. He says he was told this by a friend of someone he loves, by someone he loves, by a Hansen insider, and two other people who looked into it. They fabricated a person and a story. He says it’s gross. He says he doesn’t know exactly what was said because he doesn’t watch those videos. - Says he recently watched a beautiful, capable, smart women talk about cancel culture and drama. She’s a republican who doesn’t believe in the far right or left. Says most people go with the flow, but she’s an individual. He says he didn’t care there were things she said that he disagreed with because of the way she spoke. He says when he talks to people online, he has to remember you’re not that different. We all have feelings and people are less reasonable in your opinion if you don’t approach them reasonably. He says he is too harsh and mean in his videos, unlike the women. He understands you’re not supposed to sugarcoat the truth, but other people have feelings. - (People are after him because he hurt their feelings.) - Brings up Regina again. He says he doesn’t know what their problem is because he never talked to them. Says there’s sincere mental illness sprinkled around the internet and it’s proven if you put Regina and Adam side by side. He says he hasn’t watch the videos side by side, but he’s seen photos. He says he doesn’t know how this got past the filters and how people can be so negligent to the truth. He says that’s what happens when you let anyone on a show. People come on to troll or to project their issues. - He says people who watched him may have felt talked down to. He says he spoke like that because he felt like his audience turned on him before he had a chance to explain why it was all ridiculous. He felt it was unintelligent for people to assume it was the truth, but he was in a situation where he was threatened with divorce if he talked. He was stuck between being the bigger person and staying silent while he was building up frustration seeing what people were saying about him. - Says if the Regina and Adam thing is true, it’s the funniest disaster that ever occurred on social media. People were saying there’s all these victims and one of them turns out to be someone dressing up as a new person. It’s bad enough people can fake texts, but when you fake a whole person that’s another level of crazy. He says he almost feels blessed to be subjected to that level of comedy. He says it’s clinically insane for someone to do that with a straight face. He says he never even heard of Adam. - When his marriage was on the rocks because of cuddlegate, he told Billie he wanted to be alone. Billie tried to work it out with him. Says that’s evil step-mom, homewrecker stuff. [I’m pretty sure he’s talking about when he made the fake divorce video and she contacted him.] Says he had the opportunity to run away and abandon his family. He chose to stay because he doesn’t want to be that dad that choses his lustful side over his heart. He broke down crying at one point because he almost let down his family and he almost lost them. He didn’t talk to Billie for a few months after cuddlegate until Kai was like “uwu”. He says he told Kai it was a bad idea and it ended horribly. Says he’s done better than his dad and numerous other dads. - Says he doesn’t speak to people in his life as respectfully as he should. - Anyone in his shoes would be just as bitter and angry as he was. Some people wouldn’t even be alive. He lashed out because he didn’t get a fair chance. People won’t do a charity stream with him. - Once he told his full side in videos, people didn’t want to interview him anymore because he didn’t seem crazy anymore. - Says he was part of the mob against Chris Brown. He said he’s had people scream in his face and he didn’t do anything illegal to them. He called the cops on them. - (Patreon ban, he didn’t dox on purpose) - He says he wants to get rid of boob squeeze because it’s cringey to him. [thank god!]
“My Social Life- Before And After COVID” Sept 25, 2020, Speaks
- (Chris Hansen covid cure) - Says before COVID he stopped going out in public because people were taking picture of his children and posting them to the internet. An employee at Lowes and at Dairy Queen took photos of his children. He’s protective of them. A man [Hansen] showed up to his house when his kids were home. - He was thankful when COVID hit because people would stay away from him. He’s happy he has to wear a mask. He was wearing a different disguise in public before the masks. - (Kai threatened divorce if he spoke) - Says people’s emotions and mental illness cloud their memories. He conquered that when he was 17. A girl dumped him and he told her she was a monster. This was before people would seek clout so it was just between them. He says he supports her breaking up with him because they weren’t meant to be. - Seeing how crazy Seattle and society has gotten, he doesn’t want to be apart of it.  - He was socially lynched without going to court. (Mike went to court) - COVID gave him on excuse to avoid everyone and family members. He says COVID is horrible and people have died, but for him it came at an interesting time. He compares it to when a kid bullied him really hard in elementary school and died in a sledding accident. Says some dude or chick in a truck hit the kid. He says another time a guy was bullying him hard and that guy died in a motorcycle accident. He gave his helmet to his girlfriend. He died a hero. He gave up his life for someone. He was handsome and had his life ahead of him. - Says according to his mother, his father got a women killed by not giving her a helmet. He kept it for himself. His father also allegedly slept with his cousin. His dad tried to sue him and failed. Three of his family member accused his father of being a predator. - A reporter interviewed his father and his father acted like a hero.  - His mom is the one who left his dad. He says she didn’t have to fight for custody so there’s no motivation for her to lie. - (beat up his dad story) - Criminal experts will agree with him to follow the money in cases because money is the root of all evil. Like a news station that will make more money by making a monster instead of telling a true story. It is not profitable to tell both sides. - People like black and white stores, not stories where both people make mistakes. - He love isolation. He was covered in his father’s blood when he went to juvie. His white shirt was brown with dry blood. He was happy to be there because he was away from people and life was simpler. Everybody in there was flawed, which is better than being with his hypocrite god-loving father. Typical Seventh Day Adventist garbage. Greg says he was one as well. When he was 13 he prayed and told god he wanted nothing to do with him. Many amazing things happened to him after that. - Says you have a lot of drifters who came and destroyed someone consistent in you life, then they left. He was that consistent person. He was making hundreds of videos and entertaining thousands of people per video. Now he’s down to 900 to 3,000 views per video. They came, they destroyed, they left. They destroyed someone you connected with, had a real bond with. A lot of you cheered them on as they did this and then they left. Now you’re left with the same person, but he’s more broken. He believed in good people before, but now that he was dragged down into dirt, he has dirt in his eyes. He can’t see the sun or trees. He can just see dark and sadness. He still feels your spit on his face from when you millions of people beat him senseless socially. - He says he saw a legitimate news source says there was an FBI investigation about him. Says the FBI never contacted him. - Leafy recently suggested he should become an actor. He compares it to Kevin Spacey. Says it would be sad to lose a netflix show or a movie deal because of people saying things about you. He says imagine people who were going to be on that show with you stop talking to you because they don’t want to be dragged down with you. He’s glad he wasn’t that big when he fell because it would have hurt more. Now he gets to be a no one who knows who he really is when most people live in an alternate reality. - When he lost BillyTheFridge as a friend, he didn’t lose anything because Billy was a fake friend. Billy wanted to be a white knight. Joe and Anastasia were great friends and wanted to still talk to him. Billy later on realized James wasn’t as evil as he thought and invited him to lunch with them. Says he (James) backed out and decided to stop talking to all of them. He says it’s sad he lost Joe and Anastasia as friends, but he didn’t want to drag them into the drama and make their lives more miserable. Having friends was a burden and he didn’t want them to hurt. - (Regina / Adam) Dobs is barking. - He feels like this whole thing is a grand opportunity to look at things the way they are. He doesn’t trust anyone anymore and he doesn’t believe in friendships anymore. - He swears on his life he’s more honest than Sarah, Billie, and Shiloh.

The Sea Knows Something We Don’t
[This is a piece of speed writing inspired by Lorenzo Fonda’s “Ten things I have learned about the sea”.  Written Sept 2020]
A fog had rolled in overnight.  I warmed my hands with a cup of weak coffee and watched my breath as it became analogous to the morning mist.  My first voyage on the Firecracker, and indeed my first voyage of all, had been a long one.  From California we’d set sail for Shanghai.  That was 20 days ago.  According to the captain in a conversation held over last night’s dinner, we had less than 24 hours to go.  I became immersed in the expansive oblivion beneath me.  The many thoughts within swayed as did the waves.
Would she really be waiting there for me?  My half-sister, Fei Hong, who I’d only learned of after my father’s death.  I undertook this journey specifically to meet her face to face.  But my worries over what would happen once we did meet were growing.
A sound almost like a laugh left my chapped lips.  I’d spent this whole time feeling like a child.  The butterflies that frolicked in my belly on every first day of school had taken up permanent residence.  And this time, they’d brought friends.
Sigurddson, or Sig as he liked to be called, stomped to my side and leaned on the rail in the same fashion as me.  “What’s this, horse piss?” he asked after spitting a jet of poorly brewed coffee over the edge of the ship.  “Nah, I take that back.  Even horse piss’d wake me better than this swill.”  He had the build and beard of a Viking, and indeed he’d mentioned Scandinavian blood passed down from his father’s father.  But Sig had been raised in the United States.  He had not even a whisper of his ancestor’s accent.
“Lost in thought again, Petey boy?”
“Better to be lost in thought than lost at sea,” I offered as less than an argument.
The sailor offered back a gruff chuckle and a reminder: “Too much of the former, you’ll end up the latter.”
We shared a silence then, watching the gentle swell of the sea lapping at the Firecracker’s hull.  There was not yet a hint of dawn.  That ghostly light was still hours away.
“We’ll be in Shanghai soon, eh?  If you need to take a load off, you know, if you need a drink and a girl—” he glanced with meek discomfort at the maze of shipping containers stretching out on the deck below us “—or a guy, I know the best spots.”
Out of politeness more than anything, I answered, “I’ll let you know.”  A truth I’d specifically neglected to tell any of the crew was that I had little to no interest in any sort of person.  It was a fact which drew unwanted attention from others; I found their befuddlement over my preference unendingly incomprehensible.
“I’ve never been a big brother before.”  There was a twist of Yorkshire in my voice, same as Mum’s, even though I’d spent half of my 20 years in Seattle.
Sig wisely waited for me to finish my perplexed thought.
“Actually, I guess I’ve been a big brother 13 years now, just I didn’t know.  I wonder if I’ll prove to be any good at it.”  A stinging pain shot through my chest, piercing my breastbone. I felt each hairline as it fractured.
Growing up, it was always just Mum and me, with my father away half the time on business. That business turned out to be a second family in Shanghai.  Within the first week aboard the Firecracker, it occurred to me that it must’ve been much the same for Fei Hong.  From that moment of realization on my anxiety worsened.  How would her mother, that surely looked nothing like mine, nor spoke nor smelled nor smiled like mine, greet me after the wrongs my father had committed against both our families?
“I’d suggest you don’t worry.  ‘Least, not as much as you have been.  If the sea was uncertain, we wouldn’t have been carried this far.  She’s a living, breathing thing.  And she surely knows something we don’t.”  Sig turned to leave me with this sagely seadog advice.  But not even two strides carried him away before he froze.
The wind changed then.  The fog began to lift.
“Pete.”
Somehow, the sound of my own name startled me more than I ever thought it could.
Sig guided me with his blue-grey gaze and a gesture of his chin in the direction my back was facing.  “There she is.”
My breath hitched.  Pricks and points of light shone through the dissipating predawn mist.  Tears salty as the water below blurred those distant lights.
In a whisper, I echoed his words.  “There she is.”

SEATTLE — More than 350 Amazon employees violated the e-commerce giant’s communications policy Sunday, in an unprecedented public display of support for colleagues who were warned they could be fired for speaking out to criticize the company’s climate practices.
Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, a group of workers concerned about the company’s business with the oil and gas industry as well as its carbon footprint, published quotes from 357 workers in a post on Medium. The comments, all of which are attributed to Amazon workers by name, are a mass defiance of company rules that bar workers from commenting publicly on its business without corporate justification and approval from executives.
(Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)
“Amazon’s role in the climate crisis is staggering and alarming,” wrote Scott Ogle, a queue management analyst, according to comments viewed in advance by The Washington Post. “While the company has publicly announced measures to reduce emissions and impacts in the coming years, it does not add up with its ongoing support to oil and gas industries and its efforts to silence employees who speak out. I stand with fellow employees who prioritize sustainability over profits.”
Another employee denounced Amazon’s efforts to stifle criticism.
“Solidarity to the workers facing retaliation for standing up!” wrote Charlie LaBarge, a software engineer.
The group also plans to post a video of employees Monday speaking about the danger of climate change and saying they won’t be silenced.
Amazon encourages workers to advocate for causes they believe in but wants them to pursue those convictions when related to the company’s business internally, spokesman Drew Herdener said in a statement. Workers can submit questions to executives during all-hands meetings, and they can join internal interest groups, such as ones that focus on sustainability. Employees can also attend lunch sessions with Amazon leaders to discuss the issues, as long as they are willing to keep matters raised in those sessions confidential.
“While all employees are welcome to engage constructively with any of the many teams inside Amazon that work on sustainability and other topics, we do enforce our external communications policy and will not allow employees to publicly disparage or misrepresent the company or the hard work of their colleagues who are developing solutions to these hard problems,” Herdener said.
To illustrate Amazon’s focus on sustainability, Herdener pointed to an initiative Bezos announced in September agreeing to measure and report Amazon’s emissions on a regular basis and meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early. Critics said at the time that the commitments lack accountability and transparency.
“Of course we are passionate about these issues,” Herdener said.
The employee group claims credit for pushing Amazon to take those steps, but it wants the company to go further. The group has called on Amazon to commit to being carbon neutral by 2030, to end cloud-computing contracts that help energy companies accelerate oil and gas extraction and to stop funding politicians and lobbyists who deny climate change.
Amazon workers are part of a growing activist movement among tech workers. Along with thousands of Amazon employees, Google workers walked off the job Sept. 20 to protest corporate climate policies. A year before, thousands of Google employees stepped away from their desks to protest the company’s handling of sexual harassment claims.
Workers at both of those companies, as well as at Microsoft, have criticized the development of facial-recognition technology from their companies, fearing misuse by law enforcement and other government agencies.
Although Amazon’s employees are betting the company won’t crack down on them, Google’s workers allege they were fired in retaliation for their public criticism of the company and their attempts to organize. Google said the recent firings were a result of policies violations regarding the accessing and sharing of internal documents and calendars. The company has denied it was retaliatory.
The activism of Amazon’s workers is different, said Margaret O’Mara, a history professor at the University of Washington and the author of “The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America,” a chronicle of the tech industry. Collective action is rare among white-collar workers, and even rarer among the coders, testers and engineers who work for tech giants.
“This is not something we’ve seen before,” O’Mara said.
The challenge for Amazon is that it is selective in its hiring, investing large sums to entice employees to join the company and train them to develop its sophisticated products and services. Even though the workers speaking out account for a small fraction of Amazon’s total workforce of 750,000, including warehouse workers, they would be costly to replace.
“These high-skilled workers are among these tech companies’ most valuable assets,” O’Mara said.
The protest Sunday follows a threat to fire two workers who spoke out about the company’s environmental policies in October. Maren Costa, a principal user-experience designer at the company, and Jamie Kowalski, a software development engineer, told The Post in a joint statement that the company is contributing to climate change as its cloud-computing business aids exploration by oil and gas companies. The pair raised concerns related to a new set of statements from the company outlining its positions on a variety of hot-button issues, including an acknowledgment that it would continue to work with the energy industry.
Within a few weeks, both employees were called into meetings with the company’s human resources staff, and both received letters in November from a lawyer in the department discouraging violations of Amazon’s communications policies. The letter to Costa warned that future infractions could “result in formal corrective action, up to and including termination of your employment with Amazon.”
Rather than back down, the activist employees have dialed up the pressure on their employer. The employee group that solicited the comments aims to fight Amazon’s communications policy in numbers so large that retaliating against everyone would make it challenging to conduct business.
“The idea is to intentionally break the communications policy so prolifically that it is unenforceable,” the group wrote in an email to colleagues soliciting policy-breaking quotes.
“Hundreds of us are now putting our job on the line — because we all believe that speaking up about the climate crisis is necessary and the right thing to do at this time,” Sarah Tracy, a software development engineer, said in an email to The Post. “A policy that prevents employees from speaking out in this way at this time just won’t work for us.”
Employee criticism went beyond condemnation of the company’s climate policies. Workers also called out Amazon’s cloud-computing business for its work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which some have criticized for separating parents from their children at border facilities, and condemned Amazon’s treatment of its warehouse staff, some of whom have complained about unsafe working conditions.
“No more collaborating with ICE or with oil and gas. No more abusing warehouse employees with inhumane quotas,” Hilda Marshall, a data linguist at the company wrote. “Amazon is in a position to turn the tide, and the time is now.”
One worker suggested Amazon nix its Ring doorbell-camera business, arguing the privacy concerns are “not compatible with a free society.” Ring acknowledged earlier this month that it fired workers in recent years for improperly accessing users’ video data. Last year, a hacker accessed a Ring camera in an 8-year-old girl’s room and used it to harass her, something the company attributed to the theft of credentials that provided access.
“The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that can be struck,” wrote software development engineer Max Eliaser. “Ring should be shut down immediately and not brought back.”
Moreover, members of climate group say speaking up about important issues, even if it means disagreeing with senior leaders, is an ingrained part of Amazon’s corporate culture. At the core of Amazon’s culture are 14 leadership principles, intended to guide decision-making at the company, including “Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit,” in which workers are encouraged to argue their convictions, “even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting.”
“I thought Amazon was a place where those who see something that’s wrong and bring it up are celebrated for being leaders, not threatened with firing,” said Victoria Liang, a software development engineer and a member of the climate group.

Patriots sign veteran running back Lamar Miller to one-year deal, per report
The New England Patriots are toting  Dolphins vs Patriots up some veteran severity in the backfield, inking government avowal occurring going on Lamar Miller to a one-year conformity, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. This comes after the 29-year-out of date visited considering the club concerning the subject of Monday, per the transaction wire. Miller missed all of the 2019 season due to a torn ACL but is said to be thoroughly recovered from the offend and is ready to deed 2020.
Miller is a former fourth-round select of the Miami Dolphins gain 2012, so he is no stranger to the AFC East. He played four years in Miami and conventional himself as the starter during his sophomore season in the league. Over that stretch, Miller totaled 2,930 yards concerning the auditorium and 19 hurrying touchdowns even if catching 117 passes for 887 yards and three more scores. His period considering the Dolphins came to a close in 2016 after signing a four-year concurrence gone the Texans. In Houston, Miller started in 41 of his 44 games played.
The last period we proverb him during the regular season came backing in 2018 subsequent to the 5-foot-10, 221 pounder totaled 1,136  yards from scrimmage behind six touchdowns. He tore his ACL during the Texans' third preseason game last summer, which sidelined him for every 2019 be in be lackluster.
Miller now joins a definitely crowded New England backfield that consists of James White, Sony Michel, Rex Burkhead, Damien Harris, and J.J. Taylor. Michel, who led the club when 912 yards rushing in 2019, is currently upon the PUP list as he is still recovering from offseason foot surgery.  Veteran dealing out urge a propos Lamar Miller has found his showing off abet to the AFC East.
The New England Patriots intensely to terms when the former Miami Dolphins draft out of the undistinguished upon a one-year pact Monday, his representation, Rosenhaus Sports, told ESPNs Adam Schefter.
The promise is pending a monster for Miller, 29, who missed the 2019 regular season due to a torn ACL suffered last August.
The Miami Hurricanes product has join together 5,864 rushing yards, 1,565 receiving yards and 40 quantity touchdowns previously entering the league in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. Miller spent the adding four campaigns once the Houston Texans and was named a Pro Bowler in 2018.
He has appeared in 105 career games even though twice eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark upon the auditorium.
New Englands nimble backfield intensity chart includes Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, Rex Burkhead and undrafted rookie J.J. Taylor after Brandon Bolden opted out of the upcoming season.
Michel, who underwent foot surgery in the spring, remains upon the physically unable to sham list.
The Patriots initial practice of training camp will arrive Wednesday. Full-pads do something will follow upon Aug. 17.The New England Patriots knew in mid-March or as a upshot that they would have to begin planning for moving picture without Tom Brady, he of the book six Super Bowl rings and arguably the greatest NFL artist in archives. What the Patriots didn't, know, however, until recently was that they as well as would have to intention for computer graphics in 2020 without a whopping eight players who opted out, including starters in linebacker Dont'a Hightower, safety Patrick Chung and awful dispatch Marcus Cannon. The eight opt outs were on extremity of double any count NFL team except for Cleveland (five) and accounted for 10 percent of New England's training camp roster (those are all along to 80 this year) by now there was even a first practice.
This season could be Bill Belichick's greatest coaching challenge in addition to the Patriots as he looks to extend their NFL-folder remoteness winning streak to 12 in a dispute. However, the whole those opt outs did decline the Pats into a co-favored role in the AFC East past the Buffalo Bills. In put in, the Under is now a stuffy favorite upon New England's Over-Under win quantity of 9.5.The Patriots did make a attain of a boost via the model and the William Hill oddsmakers as soon as than they signed former NFL MVP Cam Newton to a one-year accord. Belichick has flat-out said that Newton will have to destroy out second-year Jarrett Stidham in camp to win the Week 1 quarterback job, but it would be a terrible calamity if it's not Newton taking the first snap upon Sept. 13 vs. Miami.
For what it's worth, former long-time Patriots detestable origin coach Dante Scarnecchia doesn't think it will be a near accomplishment, either: "I think (Newton) has a supreme edge, because of what he's over and finished together in the middle of in the league. The boy was an MVP [in 2015]. We played adjoining him a number of time, have a loud adoration for him as a artiste and leader, and the things he's done. This boy, from a accomplish set, a lot every choice from guys we've had in there at quarterback more than the years. Stidham has to your liking feet and gaining to pretend to have and avoid the hurry, and create and function a lot of same things. I don't think he's to Cam's act-set, but this guy is a beautiful pleasurable artist."
It's not sure if New England will have summit outlook guidance Sony Michel to right of entry the season as he began camp upon the nimble/PUP list as soon as offseason foot surgery. Michel had a immense rookie season in 2019, especially the playoffs, but disappointed last year in averaging just 3.7 yards per carry.
Going by their opponents' 2019 cumulative winning percentage, the Pats have the NFL's toughest schedule this year as those foes were 137-118-1 (.537) in 2019. While the Dolphins and Jets are still rebuilding in the AFC East, the Bills see following a force and the Pats have deeply tough trips to both Los Angeles teams, Seattle, Kansas City and Houston and a habitat game vs. Baltimore.
New England hasn't been a regular-season underdog past Sept. 11, 2016, but will be sufficient in 2020  in front projections have the Pats as dogs in as many as seven games. They are 6-lessening house favorites for Week 1 vs. Miami.

Chiefs star running back opts out of 2020 NFL season
Press Coverage series, columnists  Free NFL Live Stream Judy Battista, Jeffri Chadiha, Michael Silver and Jim Trotter engage in a encourage-and-forth outing more or less a timely topic, matter or theme. In this edition, JUDY BATTISTA kicks off a pay for advice-as well as to of the most enticing subplots at the outset of training camp.
Do you remember taking into account we thought Tom Brady's decision would be the biggest tab of the offseason? That was minister to in the forward days of March, which is to say, the Before Times. Before the country, and the NFL along then it, shut down to negotiation taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the murder of George Floyd unleashed nationwide protests and a long-needed reckoning around race and police brutality. Before Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized, Washington finally retired its racial cause offense of a nickname, and weeks of negotiations were held in description to the subject of the health and financial impact of playing football through a global health crisis. And, of course, in the by now Brady picked Tampa Bay as his supplementary domicile.
Now, after the most unimaginable offseason in archives, it appears training camps are actually creation not in the make distant away-off off from period this week. That is the most significant sign that the NFL will indeed begin what will more or less very be a most challenging regular season as scheduled subsequent to mention to Thursday, Sept. 10 in Kansas City.
Almost nothing just more or less this season is likely to be every passable, but one have emotional impact hasn't distorted: The put into outfit of camps spurs anticipation for all the stories we aspiration to see. That is particularly heightened now, because there were none of the ample sneak peeks afforded by minicamps and OTAs.
As the NFL springs to vibrancy gone again -- not practically, but for real this times -- my Press Coverage colleagues and I throb to chat approximately that. With in view of that much going going in the region of for, what are you most intrigued by as camps entre?
My other is pretty obvious: I sadness to see just how the NFL functions in the age of COVID-19.
I nonappearance to freshen if a Buster Posey-level NFL star opts out of the season. I nonappearance to see how many players exam certain after the initial intake time, subsequent to we expect the sure tests to be high. I nonattendance to see how the altered training camp schedule -- in imitation of a on the subject of three-week acclimation period in front any read is allowed -- affects artiste acquit yourself and injuries. I nonappearance to see how the nonattendance of offseason take take effect impacts what football looks subsequently than. I lack to see how the teams that went through the biggest offseason changes -- four teams have auxiliary head coaches and detestable and defensive coordinators -- run all that unfamiliarity. I nonexistence to see who besides undrafted forgive agents in reality misses preseason games. And finally, most sobering, I nonappearance to see if teams can avoid outbreaks to save the season going. To me, nothing that happens coarsely speaking the ring will be more appealing than whether the astonishing precautions influence on place can make secure the sport subsequent to the most muggy associations and whether all the league does can find the maintenance for lessons for the perch of us. There is so much that is unknowable approximately the upcoming season -- including whether it will finish -- but we'll have at least some of those answers in the neighboring few weeks.
Mike, Jim, Jeffri: What reach you think?
MICHAEL SILVER: Judy nailed it: As the most surreal offseason in records gives quirk to the most tenuous of all preseasons, it's in fact, in drive of fact hard to predict how things will movement out, from health-and-safety scenarios to what takes area vis--vis the arena. As one head coach told me recently, "The team that wins the Super Bowl will be the team that figures out how to manage COVID-19 the best. There are going to be some challenges that we can't possibly foresee."
That applies to those of us who lid the league, as expertly. For starters, we at NFL Media will be avoiding song travel during training camp, meaning Judy will inevitably visit the impressionistic art exhibit that is the New York Jets. You know, the ever-in-flux franchise that just traded its best artist, safety Jamal Adams, to the Seattle Seahawks, creating perspective for the far afield ahead but even less optimism for the knack.
Meanwhile, past Seattle's a fast steer from my Northern California dwelling -- OK, it's a certainly long steer, but it's less long from my burning than it is from anyone else's who covers the league at our place -- I'm hoping to profit a suitability of the to the front impact made by the newly acquired leader of the Legion of Boom 2.0.
First of every single one one, I'll have the funds for some credit to Adams, who was danger that the Jets wouldn't meet his long-term concurrence plea and very wanted out. Contractually bound to the team for two more seasons, as per the terms of the mediation he signed (in conjunction following the CBA-negotiated rules that mandate such things) after the franchise agreed him sixth overall in the 2017 draft, he was immediate on the subject of leverage but long not far off from strategic acumen.
