Saitama versus Garou, the breakdown and the misdirections

Warning, this'll be a long breakdown where I get into the real meat of it.

Tl;dr: We've actually all been misled because they didn't show us some crucial details. ONE is doing some real meta level writing.

So I'm rereading the Saitama vs Garou fight from 161 onward and the way Saitama deals with Garou seems justified within his capabilities, if you think in a way that Saitama for the entire time is

a) not trying to kill Garou b) trying to gauge his powers and intent

I hypothesise that Saitama is using actual power of intuition that he relies on a lot, so nothing really bad happens even when he gets pushed into the volcano, instead bunch of people get saved. He displays that high battlefield awareness when he can see that far, into the stratosphere when Garou kills Sage centipede and immediately going after extremely dangerous Evil Ocean Water with an OHKO. Even Garou is surprised that Saitama can deduce his attempt at world peace somehow, even when he did not articulate that part specifically.

He also slaps Garou away from Tareo so there's more room for them to fight. He has a bout of amusement because Garou's actions bely his hypocricy and he shoos away the civilians because there's still a lot of large scale damage being dished out and he does not want them to get caught in the crossfire. But Saitama has always been a bit of a troll.

His intuition gets proven correct time and time again when Garou ends up saving people with his attacks, more often than not.

Only whenever he gets surprised by Garou's transformations and power increase because he can't anticipate that happening does something like Garou shifting tectonic plates on other side of the Earth occur. And even then Saitama's intuition is not incorrect, it ends up saving the plane on other side of the planet and Saitama puts a stop to that potential disaster near immediately.

Then after, he punches Garou with just enough strenght to destroy his monster form and that should've been it. The end of the fight normally. Mostly large scale but superficial and unavoidable damage because Garou does not fold that easily because he's extremely willfull, even when Saitama focuses on that part and intentionally goads him and then seemingly handles him with ease in an attempt to make Garou quit the act on his own.

"Just give up already. That's enough, right?"

Sure, he could have intuited that he could have just stopped Garou dead on his tracks by grabbing his fist and initiated table talk, but that's another timeline lol.

(maybe the redraw was actually legit meta idk, more on that later)

One thing about Saitama is that he's always taking hits and gauging his opponents because he needs some time to visualize his plan of action based on his intuition, if what Genos being the objective narrator being in the right is correct in an OVA about Genos trying to find the key to his strenght. When he actually focuses to the point of hyperfocus (Serious mode) and gets into the zone, he visualizes more efficently, intently and faster about what he actually wants to do, so he can actually use techniques he has seen done and learned before to great effect when in this state.

Rather than being a punching bag to Garou's martial arts, he becomes the martial artist.

If he didn't do his hero work and even day to day life carefully, he would end up hurting a lot of people unintentionally. Even the slightest bit of miscalculation in power could kill people. Genos got temporary amnesia because Saitama accidentally opened a bag of chips a fraction too hard. Genos is more durable than most. Saitama's reflexive reactions like sneeze in normal conditions is enough to burst a room apart.

Chances are hitting Garou to strip monsterisation was enough too and it should have ended the fight then and there. The way Saitama responds in both drawn versions of the fight is directly influenced by Garou's thought processes. When Garou feels like quitting the fight, Saitama stops him and talks with him. When Garou wants to keep going with the fight and shows no signs of quitting, Saitama hits him down. This is Saitama's intuition, the embodiment of Justice enforcement, Seigi Shikkou.

But we keep forgetting that God is watching this entire time.

And God has a way of directly influencing people's egoes to inflate them. Even if he does not make direct contact. He does this to Tatsumaki and gives her delusions of grandeur and inflated sense of ego to push the drill inside the earth, so Orochi can sacrifice itself on the altar to give God more power.

The more Garou's ego flares, the more God can have influence over it. So he keeps transforming as he refuses to give in. Garou keeps attacking to the point of causing damage to the planet too. More about God's influence over people here.

God's influence is something that is impossible to intuit or anticipate and the very moment God joins the fight, Saitama is at a loss in how to deal with Garou. In one hand, Garou is still Garou but he started acting strange and opposed to what his gut is telling him. And a whooole lot stronger too, because he actually gives Saitama a nosebleed when he turns into Mode: Saitama to match his power equally. You read that right, he hurt Saitama. The intentional paneling gives it away (not to mention the power graph in 168).

Once again the sudden transformation and exponential power increase keeps surprising Saitama and God's influence over his ego makes Garou's actions very hard to intuit, but Saitama tries his best. But again, Garou became so strong so suddenly even Saitama's hero suit got shredded by nuclear fist that came out of the blue, something that Saitama's willpower, his mental energy cathexis, protects and that fact does flabbergast him as well.

"Aaah! What the hell man, you messed up my outfit!"

But still he keeps on gauging the situation to the best of his ability, but the situation is now getting worrisome, especially after Mode: Saitama got pulled out. Garou still does not make sense to him, because God's subconscious effect and subliminal messages to Garou confuse him. He can hear God's echo chamber. Garou acts very weird and not all akin to the Garou just moments before.

He does not get much time to ponder though when Garou suddenly unleases Gamma Ray Burst, something that would destroy earth and Saitama has to make a very swift plan of action because he can't redirect it without killing Garou like he did to Boros and has to angle it away from earth. Nor did have time to prep himself into emotional state to hit him with a Serious Punch. Or he did not have time to gauge if it would have also just wiped out Garou if he used the required amount of power anyway.

Yap there's a drawback. Because he needs an emotional state to do a really strong punch as it's a discharge of said emotional energy. No time for any accurate punching meter unlike with Boros and Elder Centipede or Orochi Or Evil Ocean Water, Gamma ray burst is gonna hit right now. And it hits Saitama and sends him into tons of rubble and he digs himself out in a timeline according to where Bang confronts Garou.

Saitama thus far, has tried to do everything in his power to not only spare Garou, but to end the fight against a planetary+ level threat with no casualties and no irreparable damage to the planet he's living on.

It's no small feat at all. In every sense he's being very heroic here.

But God has far too much influence over this fight, a being that does not reside in the same dimension, thus something that cannot be handled with intuition.

This is where things get messy when Saitama digs himself out of the rubble. He did not apparently fly that far from where the heroes were, he would have heard and seen Blast and nuclear fists going off in the sky and hurried towards the battle.

Garou just unleased a devastating attack that could have destroyed the planet if he did not aim it away from the surface, he would have done his best to hurry back immediately and fight with more force.

The fact that he did not speaks of inconsistency in how he dealt with Garou before and caring about people (like CE) and how the situation got a lot more urgent faster. But he was not stuck, he climbed out in time just after Garou made his speech and future Saitama appeared to punch Garou in fixed timeline.

So... what gives? He got out of the rubble in time, but he just was not there in time anyway and lot of stuff happened in between...?

And it suddenly hit me.

Time dilation.

Two possibilities:

He had touched God's cube before which Blast says had slown down time in God's chamber.

Or Gamma ray burst effect because of gravitational time dilation.

Godrou mocks Saitama for being late. Very intentionally. To shift blame to Saitama.

He knew what happened and he knows about time travel. God knows the flow of all energies in the universe and Godrou by proxy, duh.

Gamma ray burst possibly caused gravitational time dilation effect. Gamma ray Burst displays gravitational pull effects when it pulls heroes towards it.

In physics and relativity, time dilation is the difference in the elapsed time as measured by two clocks. It is either due to a relative velocity between them (special relativistic "kinetic" time dilation) or to a difference in gravitational potential between their locations (general relativistic gravitational time dilation). When unspecified, "time dilation" usually refers to the effect due to velocity. After compensating for varying signal delays due to the changing distance between an observer and a moving clock (i.e. Doppler effect), the observer will measure the moving clock as ticking slower than a clock that is at rest in the observer's own reference frame. In addition, a clock that is close to a massive body (and which therefore is at lower gravitational potential) will record less elapsed time than a clock situated further from the said massive body (and which is at a higher gravitational potential).

God interfered on the fight yet again and caused time to work against Saitama, in ways that what was only mere seconds for Saitama was minutes for Garou. The closer one would be to Garou's body with lower gravitational potential, the less time would elapse than Saitama who was knocked further away.

That or the effects of the time paradox itself slowed down time when future Saitama came back from time at this point. Timey wimey stuff happened. In order for the future to happen, the past had to be rewritten somehow to close the time loop.

Either way, God is the reason this happened. Not because Saitama dilly dallied and was too blase to care.

And so, Saitama got stuck in a time dilation and could not actually make it back in time to stop Garou any more because time elapsed faster for him than others. On that point onward, what had happened in the erased future had to start in the past. Poignant that he came back in time to fix everything.

We're just not shown that he's stuck in time dilation, because to Saitama, it also did not happen, he did not feel like anything was wrong before he confronted Garou again and saw everyone dead. He felt like he just failed, his hero intuition led him completely wrong, that he made a huge error in judgement and he took his sweet time and was too indifferent to care to get there quick enough. Everything he believed in came crashing down when his sense of heroism failed him and everyone he knew died on him. He thought he did everything correctly but still his best friend and his anchor to humanity died. Nothing could be more shocking and his world got turned upside down. His self-esteem crashed down to the bottom of the pit. Everything is his fault and he did everything wrong.

Exactly what God wants him to feel, doubt himself. That in order to be more efficient, he should not rely on his intuition and ability to gauge the situation accurately; that he should just bulldoze with less care for humanity because monsters are monsters right? They are not human. And to be more efficient, it would be better to just dehumanize them and be more apathetic. In order to not make mistakes like these any longer, one should have to be perfect because if Saitama makes even a tiny error, people suffer and he has far too much room for error.

Because Saitama has so much power to end the fight instantly, he should just go for it right? Just become omnipotent. To feel like the end justifies the means. To overcompensate to achieve that perfection because he does not want to make mistakes anymore, made to feel like he lacks in heroic qualities, even when he has heroism in spades, especially when his power grows to levels where a reflexive sneeze can destroy Jupiter. But now he was made to doubt what makes him a good person and heroic.

What God wants is to groom Saitama to become like him. A being with a God complex who had discarded his humanity and emotions in favour of attaining perfection and perfect judgement and morality. Because Saitama is still susceptible to God's power like everyone else is and the superiority complex rears it's head when he beats down Garou efficently like a toy, in his anger and grief that he dissociates from so it does not overwhelm him. But god was also influencing that fight and made it into ego versus ego battle.

Saitama did not let go of his humanity in this fight, but the seed is already planted. It's up to Saitama and the people he knows whether he allows that seed to grow and fester and turn him into a monster. Into a being like God.

But one thing is clear here: Saitama did not actually make a mistake in this fight.

He was not blase, he had learned better and he tried his best.

God made him feel like the worst possible person and failure on the planet so he could use him.

This is the insidious nature of God, turning humans against themselves.

Saitama is still a hero through and through.

He may overrely on his powers, that's true and it was used against him here, but if he does not trust in himself, then who can he trust? Not trusting in himself would make him lose his self and his capacity in being a hero, because he needs to trust in himself to do the right thing and to never be defeated. If he can be defeated, then he loses the fight and the world may end then.

(Hell, ONE made US READERS doubt Saitama and his true heroism. Because of tiny details that were not shown. Actually magnificent storytelling.)

i mean part of the reason why arcane is as good as it is, besides the stunning visuals, is because it was in development for 6 years. they had six years to go back and forth on the look, the style, the story the story the story. 6 fucking years. that requires patience. that requires cooperation from all writers and directors. that requires seeing the culture change and responding in kind to reflect what people would like to see.

you notice how there's so many female characters, and while even though some of them are on thin ice a little (jinx/powder being that mentally unstable wide-eyed violent young woman/girl who doesn't really wear a lot) they've got beautiful stories that connect deeply with one another's without being centered on a man at all. look at vi's body shape. look at the range of body shapes for female characters, the range of faces. even how they walk (I love Vi's walk). you have a the tale of two cities, political depth and manipulation, meaning displayed in the way character's dress, stand, walk, how they're designed, what their hobbies and interests are, etc. all these things that would take time to figure out. that's partly why arcane is so good. they had time.

anyone who's been following me for a while knows where this is going. im sorry but the reason so many star wars shows falls flat for me is because these stories do not have the time to develop. i see development in the singular. one year here. one year for another show. maybe the concept existed for a while (with DF and GL, it seems they always have concepts that exist for a long time) but because they're concepts and because they basically go in the freezer until they're needed again, they don't really have the time to develop both deliberately and organically. the misbalance of the book of boba fett. whatever is happening with the mandalorian. the general mess that is the bad batch.

arcane is fundamentally a show about politics. you can't have a council, and oppressed class, the rich/poor divide, and all the ways that the class divisions have affected people (vi's incareceration, silco's manipulations, the lack of children in the undercity, viktor's disability) and not have the show be about politics. the writers understood this.

in the bad batch, a show about that takes place during the post-war rise of a fascist regime that has just speedily and aggressively replaced not only an entire republic, but also succesfully committed genocide and now spreads its terror throughout an entire galaxy, hunter, a soldier, says he and his team never cared about politics.

and indeed, theres a clunky way that the bad batch handles the inherently political existence of the clones, the empire, etc. politics should be permeating the interactions that the batch has with greater galactic society, but instead they relegate political discussion to specific episodes or scenes, and then say "okay we'll focus on that later, let's get back to X and Y". the extrajudicial execution of civilians is a political act. running from the empire is a political act. joining the empire is political. having one episode and a handful of scenes dedicated to the political side of their lives doesn't cut it.

its probably because i majored in political science that this is bugging me as much as it is. i know ive moved very far away from the thesis of this post, but bear with me lol. figuring out the political structure of a world and how it affects the characters within that world is hard. like. its not easy. it's not as simple as making a government and slapping a few laws onto it (and notice how even in the well-done political fantasies, there rarely is a government structure that hasn't already been seen in the west specifically). arcane's works as seamlessly as it does because they took the time to figure that out WHILE being aware that there would be large swaths of the audience that know nothing about league of legends (me, all my friends, etc).

people who wanted to watch the bad batch asked if they needed to have seen tcw or any other part of star wars to watch it. most bad batch fans said no. ive seen the bad batch and even i would tentatively say no. but then you watch the series, and nearly every episode has a cameo that you can tell is significant story wise, but if you've never seen tcw and have no idea who anyone is, you'd be really confused as to why everything grinds to a halt to dramatically reveal a character you've never seen before. and then they take two episodes to focus on the development of a character from another series. anyone watching can tell that they're filling in gaps and closing arcs or opening stories for people you will never see again. the bad batch wasn't written with non-star wars fans in mind, as much as people would like to insist otherwise. the main characters want to be apolitical in a politically tumultuous time, while living politicized lives. the political world is not set up very well.

(although i dont know that the "Right" amount of development would have changed much. DF and GL seemed dead set on having their little Trope Troupe, so they may have been doomed from the beginning)

so i know ive contradicted myself in some ways. if the bad batch had time they'd be better but also they've existed for a while and they're still bad and also theyve been doomed from the start. i think all of these are true. conceptually, as characters, doomed from the start--but at least an inch of thought and consideration for the current sociopolitical climate would have undoomed them at least a little. worldbuilding, not doomed from the start but the writers definitely needed more time to consider all their options and write a clear beginning, middle, and end to bridge through, if That Interview with Rau and Corbett signifies anything.

Unprompted HC rambling covering:

- How popular Trickster / No Spin really was.

- What Inspiration/Generation they're based on.

To give context, this was prompted when I looked over Adam's outfit description:

Now, I always HC'd NoSpin to be a 2.5-3rd generation (It was the golden age of Kpop). This solidifies that for sure, because of the venue itself. {But also if you look at the light sticks for both YunJin, and NoSpin, they're very 'dated'. NoSpin's notoriously reminds me of NCT, EXO, or 2PM which had the name on the stick and likely doesn't change color. YunJin's reminds me of BigBang's [and a few others]}

This is a large stadium...so large that not many k-pop groups perform at this venue, simply because it's not ideal. Unless a large k-pop event with multiple acts is hosted, there are not too many groups that have performed here (Despite having tons of cool features to a LOT screens, lighting, and the like). I found an interesting website I'll source here while researching, but I'll copy and paste share the snippets. {Remember this was written in 2016 so it may have changed, but for the time period i think it lines up}.

The two (three counting BigBang, which I think Inspired "NoSpin") major groups that performed here are BTS (which makes sense since they used a producer from BTS to inspire All-Kill), and EXO. (I personally think Oh Sehun is the closest Face-claim for Trickster I could find, and one I was quiet on outside of streams. {I know people say San from Ateez, but comparatively... Sehun matches a lot more with the interestingly unique and sharp visual features that Trickster has. Exo ALSO has some of the best vocals in all of K-pop. They're filled with legendary singers that have an amazing range.}

Now both these groups are huge! Albeit, BTS of course the much larger, but I refuse to believe NoSpin was that big. (BTS just had a lot of things going for it that I don't think NoSpin would have, especially given that Ji-Woon was so dissatisfied. {the gimmicky era of 'figuring out sound' though does tie in.} They did have to be quite perfect though as role models and most def felt the pressure which I think was inspo.)

With all that being said, I definitely do think NoSpin was quite the popular group! If they could pull in so many fans, especially after their death, I'm sure plenty of people wanted to support Ji-Woon. A macabre headline like that would definitely bring in morbid curiosity and make a memorable impression. From the concerts in NoSpin's memory to Trickster's (re)birth, I'm sure South Korean media was following this man's career closely, which could have caused a bit of pressure and disdain for still living in NoSpin's shadow. (And push him to make a unique sound to make him stand out.)

Now I don't think any group is a 1-to-1 inspiration. I definitely use a lot of Block B influence because it hits a lot of the "outlier sound" group dynamic, which was so different from other K-pop at the time; held up against BTS when they shared a stage/"battled" for an award show; and had some minor controversies (Thailand incident that the press held some fault for, along with bad management/company, and backlash at some songs being too insensitive {Song: LOL *one of my favorites. I mean come on they were inspired by Eminem, is it a surprise they were a dark horse?} ); and produced one of the more successful solo artists, Zico, who went through his own 'demons'; either public upset with 'controversies', inside criticisms and 'pressured' times. (There's a reason he formed his own agency.) -- I just think from a social/psych study, they make great information as an inside look at a k-pop music industry environment, and how it can have upsets.

I don't really have a way to wrap this up, other than man's got issues and I could go on forever. But anyway Found this out and wanted to comment on it somewhere. It might be repeated in some asks if I get around to them, so act surprised if you see it. But I wanted to drop it here before I forget.

ALSO ADAM. He may not have stanned Trickster before, but I can say, after going to specifically a k-pop concert; you absolutely leave there being a fan. If anyone's gone to one (which I had the pleasure of), you probably know what I'm talking about. You really do feel the artist's energy, along with the crowd. It's certainly very memorable. I'm just saying maybe Adam had a Trickster Bias for a little bit.

Cold - (from my Tokyo Revengers wip Saudade)

Takara ties the laces together and tries not to wince as her feet quickly get cold. She hangs the roller blades around the back of her neck, letting them rest just under her arms. It’s not going to be comfortable, but since Mikey had basically demanded she comply, he could deal with them digging into his back for all she cared.

Snow - (from my original wip for a Divergent isekai oc Quest)

Since Groucho won’t talk to me, I whistle as we walk. If it happens to be the whistle song from Snow White…well that’s on Groucho here. A muscle in his jaw is twitching by the time we reach the kitchen. “Hey Ram! How much did these people eat today?” I call out. The not Steve Rogers looks over at me. He still looks like he’s going to cut me.

Frost - from the wip part 3 of Unexpected Company - my oc Emma and Eddie Munson)

“You’re not half bad.” “No?” “I didn’t attempt to pierce my eardrums with a fork, so no.” “Well that would be a shame,” he says. “Might not be invited back with that kind of trauma in the audience.” “You could say it was visual effects.” “Even when you’re in the hospital?” “All part of the act.” He laughs at that. “Quite an act, Frost. Maybe you should head to Hollywood.” “Can’t,” she says. “Banned. Too many deals with the devil there.”

Ice - (I just wrote this earlier today for my Tokyo Revengers oc Takara)

She eventually skids to a stop, feeling more like herself. Her mother had forced her into ice skating in return for playing hockey. She never thought it would work like this. The repeated motions work better than any therapy.

Gloves - (from my My Hero Academia wip Dig My Grave (take my hand))

Sayuri sits on the ground, letting the cold seep in through the floor. Eri is fast asleep on the bed, drained from the experiments done on her. Every time she closes her eyes, she hears Eri’s screams. She sees the way the girl was bound in that chair, Kai leaning over her and taking his gloves off as his man drew blood. Fury rolls through her. She’s getting the kid out. No matter what.

Hat - ...apparently the only mention I've ever written of a hat was Hoppers in Tammy Thompson Takes on the Upside Down and I already posted those scenes...

Cocoa (or Tea) - (I also don't write cocoa...but I do write about tea. At least in my MHA fic...)

Sayuri stares at the small animal that makes up UA’s principal. “Yes, please.” She watches carefully as he pours out tea for both of them before he takes his cup and sits back. Sayuri picks her cup up with her left hand and carefully sips it. It’s light. “How are you finding your accommodations?”

Blanket - (from a Sons of Anarchy fic I started and haven't gone back to yet lol)

The phone was ringing. Again. Her hand shot out from under the covers, smacking down on the nightstand before rummaging around, trying to find it. She yanked it free of the charger as she pulled it under the blanket and answered. “Hello?” she asked, wondering who the hell was calling her. “Dad’s dead.” That woke her up. “What?” “Dad’s dead. Police just called. Apparently, he still had me listed as an emergency contact.” “God damn it.” She shoved the blanket down and sat up. “Okay. I’m up. Sort of.” She pushed her hair back before running a hand down her face. “Now what?”

Snuggle/Cuddle - (I could only find this in a SPN fic I wrote AGES ago and only posted on ffn, so here...)

"Alright! Magic Fingers!" Dean exclaimed and I turned to raise an eyebrow at him before moving to the bed furthest from the door. "Right, have fun snuggling on that bed." I tossed my bag on the bed and turned to see Sam and Dean sharing awkward looks before playing rock paper scissors. "Son of a bitch!" Dean muttered with a longing glance at the bed. Sam won.

i've never understood what people meant about tattoos looking awful, what's wrong with jk's? is it the design or like the, execution I guess? all I know about 'good' tattoos is from that one post from years ago that explained good tattoos shouldn't look say unsaturated or have colors spilling out of the lines of whatever, and I figured jk's tattoos don't seem to do any of that so they they must not be bad...?

I don't have much of an opinion on jk's sleeve, from the little i've seen i just think it's cool he has it I guess? but tons of people seem to hate it and idgi? and I want to get it less for jk and more bc I want to get tattoos one day too lol

There are several ways to evaluate tattoos.

Technical skill at the physical act of tattooing: Are the lines that are supposed to be straight actually straight? Are colors where they should be? Do solid areas look solid? Many bad tattoos fail here, but I don't think that's why people hate JK's.

Long-term feasibility: Was this tattoo designed by someone who understands what will look like absolute shit in 2 years. JK's are fine here, but all those ultra thin loopy line tattoos BTS fans get of album covers are going to look like garbage as the ink spreads. Things with straight lines are even worse. Some body parts are more likely to sag and deform a very precise tattoo too.

Fine arts design skill: Is the overall composition pleasing and balanced? If lines nearly intersect in one place but not another, is that intended to draw the eye or create tension, or is it an error? Do the elements come together to create one coherent artwork consisting of body and tattoos, or is the body a storage space for random shit that does not go together? This is similar to how we tell if a composition of a photo or painting is good.

Frankly, JK's sleeve looks like a hodgepodge shoved together without good layout skills. I'd need clearer photos of it to really nitpick, but even if there are thematic connections, it doesn't seem well designed visually.

And finally, BAD TASTE: Some tattoos are executed fine, but the choice of subject matter is offensive, stupid, or just plain ugly.

JK's hand tattoos look like he drew on his hand with a sharpie. What the fuck kind of junior high bullshit is that? Ugggggggly!

For myself, I chose to get a tattoo of a wayang kulit puppet I got as a child. I found a tattoo artist who's also a fine artist and had him do a creative interpretation of the shadow because I wanted a tattoo in black ink only, and I wanted any age-related fuzziness to work with the design instead of against it. I chose a Mexican guy who does a lot of Aztec and Mayan-inspired art because while the specific art traditions are different, there are some commonalities.

Like with commissioning fan art or any other art, pick someone who already works in a style close to what you want.

I chose a size and position I thought made an overall nice composition on my body, wrapping around my left shoulder, and when I get a second one, it will be on my right hip to make my overall body look like one artwork.

There are styles of tattoo I find very beautiful and ones I don't like, just on an aesthetic, artistic level, same as I don't like every painter or cartoonist. Some things I find pretty I still wouldn't get though.

I've been fascinated with irezumi since I was a teen, but the level of color would clash with too many of my outfits, so I would probably not get a tattoo like this myself.

But overall, I do love how beautiful these are as artworks (even aside from being tattoos) and how they turn the entire body into one canvas.

I only like fairly large tattoos, say covering the entire upper arm with one design, and I hate small flash (prefab) designs. I would never get something on me that came out of an artist's back catalogue, and since I'm making a body-level artwork, I want it to be something of a size that shows in the context of looking at my whole body. If it's going on my body permanently, then it will be designed by some combination of me and my artist to my unique specifications.

Dude like... I'm sympathetic to these critiques about internet hatred toward Rings of Power and I think they make a lot of very important points about the way the show was received. But unfortunately, they make a lot of these points at the cost of completely disregarding all the legitimate critiques of the show and filing them under "you just hate the diverse casting" or "you're obsessed with the idea of fidelity" when, no... that's not it at all. Many of us have no problem at all with the basic fact that the show changed a ton of shit. Like, some of us do understand what an adaptation is lol

Like for example, I'm obviously a big Vampire Chronicles fan and the recent IWTV adaptation changed SO MUCH in order to create something new. But the difference is that IWTV, unlike RoP, took these adaptational changes seriously as intentional shifts in perspective which illuminate the themes and conflicts within the story and characters in a new way. The issue is not that RoP made changes at all but that many of us feel that these specific changes undermine character and theme rather than support them or even reinterpret them. I think it's disingenuous to say that these takes on Elrond or Galadriel are reinterpretations given the effort that the show has taken to signal continuity with Jackson's trilogy which, while making some affective changes to both characters, much more closely aligns to their roles in the novel.

Like the specific changes to Elrond and Galadriel aren't just cringe, they undermine the characters' actual arcs and roles in the story. And I think it's fine to disagree with that criticism, but I think you should take it seriously rather than dismissing it as a bad faith argument.

I'm also skeptical of the total dismissal of fans' discomfort with the fact that Amazon made the show. Like, yes, the question of boycotting is a complicated one but to totally dismiss the fact that megacorporation has produced what feels to many of us like a cynical cash grab is just... weird to me.

Moreover, I think it was just.... not a good show? The tone and pacing felt disjointed and odd, the character development was mostly non-existent, the larger character beats all fell flat and felt unearned, the plot either dragged or raced too quickly. Visually, it felt too cheap to have been the large-scale production it was and it brought nothing new or artistically/cinematically interesting to the table. If you disagree or if these things aren't issues for you, that's totally fine and valid! But acting like the only criticism of the show is down to bad faith arguments about fidelity is nonsense.

To be clear, I think it had its fair share of redeeming qualities. I think the entire cast brought banger performances to what I consider to be really weak material and that's applaudable. Even though I hated how the part was written, for example, Robert Aramayo gave a great performance and because of his love and attention to the role, I did feel like I was watching Elrond despite the nonsense choices he was making. The idea for the Mordor plot was a GREAT one even though I think they flubbed it in execution. Despite its general air of plastic-ness, the show is occasionally beautiful. I think the diverse casting is a no-brainer huge positive and an obvious necessity if Middle Earth is going to have any future visual media at all and the fact that it's a controversial issue at all is fucking stupid. I liked the stuff with Gandalf even though it drags and I don't mind at all that it contradicts the written narrative. Cynthia Addai-Robinson gave, for me, a totally stand-out performance as Miriel and they should have given her more screen time and hopefully they will do just that if they're smart.

But there are other issues too like the fairly offensive depictions of the Harfoots and Dwarves as filthy simpletons with shitty Irish accents and backwards violent drunkards with Scottish accents, respectively. These are legitimate critiques of the show and demonstrate how bizarre the idea is that the simple base-level presence of diverse casting somehow makes a production beyond reproach??

The point I want to make is that the total reduction to Thing Good or Thing Bad in internet discourse helps nobody. There's lots of nuance to this conversation and I think that it IS a conversation which matters. I get that this show has been really divisive for Tolkien fans but jesus christ guys can we just use an ounce of critical thinking and actually speak to one another and critically engage with this material instead of uncritically celebrating a massive corporate cash grab? Like you're ALLOWED to enjoy said massive corporate cash grab, it doesn't make you evil but the zealousness and lack of nuance with which you defend it is kind of disturbing.

Likewise, those critics of the show who DO only hate it on grounds of fidelity to Tolkien's written work without any care for adaptation and how it works are also reproducing thoughtless and uncritical arguments which fail to engage with either the original text or the adaptation. You're allowed to hate the show but appealing to your idea of Tolkien's imaginary response to it is weak and lame and irrelevant.

Reminder:

I like to consider seme/uke the following:

seme: the active pursuer of the relationship in the narrative

uke: the passive resistor to the relationship in the narrative

This means I think of them as archetypes (useful only when talking about fiction, not useful when talking about real life). It’s about who is in CONTROL of the relationship’s story arc. (Exceptions: Ukes Forced to Undertake Seme Roles)

top/bottom/verse: terms which come from the gay/queer community and pertain to sexual preference and (should) have nothing to do with narrative power dynamics or personality. To be crass top/bottom is about who gets penetrated. It’s referencing sexual position and physical acts, not characterization or narrative. The bottom is NOT the weak one or the girl. Fuck off.

Dom/sub/switch: terms which come from the kink community and pertain to the power dynamics of a relationship, dominant vs submissive, (which may include physical sexual acts but do not have to).

I think BL, when it does acknowledge kink outright, is either doing so accidentally (because of the cross over feel of the dynamics) or it is doing it intentionally but poorly (glares at Mame). So take all of these with a LARGE grain of salt. Or a big pat of butter... if that's your preference.

BLs That Overtly Reverence D/s (or BDSM & Kink)

(on purpose or not, as opposed to just seme/uke)

I'm leaving aside the dark ones, almost all of them have a kink component or push seme/uke into a D/s area in a bad way (I’m glaring at you Double Mints).

Almost all Chinese BL that was high heat pre-censorship was also kinky. The two went together (if gay = taboo in the producing culture than more additional taboo tropes are likely to be included such as age gap, stepbrother, kidnapping, whipping boy, etc...).

There is a long tradition of “punishment” particularly the seme threatening the uke with sexual acts as punishment (sigh) if uke misbehaves, acts out, or teases the seme too much. I have a post about that here, so I’m not gonna talk about it again.

But yeah, that’s a very kinky notion, I guess.

Examples of D/s in BL

LeoFiat in Don't Say No (Thailand - GaGa)

Leo and Fiat have to be number one on the list, of course. Fiat is clearly a lifestyle submissive and during his first appearance in TharnType 2 he is spiralling because he lacks the firm hand of a Dom, and the one he has leaned on for so long is away and also will not take their relationship to the next level. I talk about this in terms of caregiver codependency and the salvation trope.

In Don’t Say No they become the lead couple and the series openly talks about kink, sub needs, BDSM, and toys. In this regards it is groundbreaking. It doesn’t handle it very well, but it is there.

Why not well? The character chemistry is is off, and while Fiat definitely reads as a submissive (not a uke) Leo does not read as a Dom. In fact, he barely registers as a seme. It’s an odd miss match that I was never able to get over, possibly because I was caught in this spiral of trying to figure out which archetypes the story and the actors were attempting to play.

That said, I think we can consider DSN as opening the floodgates of kink in Thai BL. Prior to this show there were certainly Thai BLs that visually references D/s but this one was the first to openly talk about it.

After it aired, others felt safe talking about bondage at the very least. And now we are seeing it pop up more and more in Thai BL, particularly the “edgier” stuff.

TinCan in Love By Chance: A Chance at Love (Thailand - Viki)

Tin and Can develop a linguistic D/s dynamic that is basically Tin being a stern Daddy type over Can’s rude linguistic register and bad language. Then they even have a conversations about Tin being Can’s sugar daddy. It’s kind of a joke, but linguistically, kind of not.

Much of Mame’s stuff has some D/s in it, but it is rarely well done.

CirPhu in TharnType 2 (Thailand - Viki) = BEST BOYS

This couple is one of Mame’s better examples of healthy D/s, possibly because they have very little screen for her to mess with. But from what we see it is a CLEAR Daddy/boy dynamic. It almost goes so far as actual age play (in which case that would be Daddy/little).

But from a lifestyle D/s perspective Cir is a VERY good Daddy and Phu is a very very good boy. They aren’t my favorite BL couple, but they are my favorite D/s couple in a BL.

Hira & Kiyoi in My Beautiful Man AKA Utsukushii Kare (Japan - GaGa)

Effortlessly sexy and rough in the best way (where Don’t Say No is neither) this BL is unashamedly kinky. But then kink on screen is something Japan does well and tends to sneak into all their romances, in some form or another. (See the Pornographer series for some super kinky gas lighting action. Even Takumi-kun gets a little kinky, and all the dark BL is insanely kinky. And have you seen their het stuff? Yeah. Kinky is part of Japan’s romance brand.)

Anyway, back to Utsukushii Kare. I talk about this being a whipping boy trope, and by it’s nature that’s a kinky dynamic based on a high control and/or bully/humiliation kink (this is both). The glorious loving harshness of Utsukushii Kare is all about the kinks matching up. Kiyoi wants to be the spoiled prince ordering Hira around and insulting him, Hira wants to worship and spoil him and also be used and insulted by him (but also kill anyone who doesn’t treat Kiyoi with respect). It’s unusual to find a Dom with a humiliation kink and even more rare to see that in the seme character (which is why so many watchers thought Hira was the uke or sub), but if you’re familiar with the Worshiper/spoiled prince narrative trope you’ll recognize Hira & Kiyoi as a twist on an indulgent Daddy/brat pairing in the kink scene.

In fact, I would call their dynamic a LOT more D/s than it is seme/uke.

Utsukushii Kare is kinda a kink masterpiece. The kind of pieces you go to your master for... little bitty bloody pieces.

Akk & Theo in Enchante (Thailand - YouTube)

Ep 5 - A recent drop so I have all the screen caps for it because I was thinking of sticking it into this post as I watched it:

I don’t know how intentional this one is about playing with the D/s dynamic but... having the seme tie up the uke, even as the uke asks for it, and then kneel in front of him and feed him while telling him his only purpose is to care for him? Yeah. As we say in my neck of the woods, HELLA KINKY.

Bit switchy too, but then I get that with their dynamic. Theo is clearly kinda a spoiled prince, and they get demanding, even when tied up. However Akk doesn’t entirely read as a Dom. If he is one, he’s kinda a bratty caring Dom (rare personality type in the kink scene).

So my feel with this show is this they are referencing D/s for fun, but it ties neither to the seme/uke nor to the actual nature of the characters dynamic (sexual or otherwise). In fact, I would go so far as to say this show will always give these too a very weak seme/uke feel. It seems GMMTV is leaning that way these days.

SeanWhite and DanYok in Not Me (Thailand - YouTube)

No so obliquely references bondage a few times. Plus there is the whole power dynamic and hand cuff thing between Yok and Dan.

Bondage is kinda the entry level drug to the world of BDSM, we shouldn't be surpassed to see it mentioned and referenced as the most comfortable of the kinks for the general public to consume.

There is a part of me that thinks GMMTV is pushing exploration in this area right now because they want to get away from sme/uke without actually abandoning the dynamic entirely and D/s is one way to do that.

But it’s not coming across very well or clearly. It’s muddled. Possibly intentionally. I think the show is merely using these elements to emphasize it’s own gritty toughness, and that of the characters in general, not their sexual relationship or power play dynamics with each other.

Fighter & Tutor in Why R U? (Thailand - Viki)

Fighter and Tutor have a lot of dominance games and play back and forth. They are also explicitly verse. Which I like very much. But frankly, in the end, they just soft boyfriends who are really sexually into each other.

They aren’t as kinky as they wanna be. If they were, though, these two would be prime example of switches.

Ace & Sky in My Day (The Philippines)

I wouldn’t call this couple even slightly D/s, in fact there’s no seme/uke either (that’s not unusual in Pinoy BL).

But they do get kinky, there’s belt involved. It’s awesome.

Kang Gook & Han Taejoo in Where Your Eyes Linger (Korea - Viki)

Frankly anything with whipping boy meet spoiled prince is gonna get a little kinky, especially when that whipping boy is the seme attack dog variant.

There’s a lot of D/s play with these two, the wrestling in the gym etc... I mention it because it’s one of the few modern KBLs that even edges into going there.

Tang Yi & Shao Fei in HIStory 3: Trapped (Taiwan - Viki)

The leads in this series get kinky quite a few times. In fact, that’s part of their dynamic, to the point were Tang Yi being too tame and soft causes Sao Fei to run away. But honestly, in the end, it’s just boyfriends fucking around.

A lot of the Taiwanese stuff plays with kinky aspects in a not seme/uke way, rough sex and struggles for physical dominance in a sexual encounter are particularly popular.

Cutie Pie - main & side couple

I tend to think of both couples in this show as having a pretty much lifestyle D/s dynamic. Since it references yaoi manga a lot, it’s not too hard. It helps me cope.

Others to note

There are a few BLs where there is a kind of a nod to cross-dressing fetishes: My Bromance the movie (don’t watch it), Love Stage, My Lascivious Boss, and I Am Your King spring to mind. And Udagawachou de Matteteyo of course, which is entirely overt about it.

But fetishization of an identity is dodgy territory and I’m not sure any of these handled that aspect particularly well (except maybe My Bromance).

Since the two leads are reincarnated pets who remember their original identities, you could argue there is puppy play in this one, at least. It’s not really sexualized so it’s more lifestyle, but that counts in my book.

A Characterisation/Writing Guide - Autism and ADHD

Hi everyone! This post is going to be a guide on how to accurately write characters with Autism and ADHD. I have been so many works where Autism and ADHD have been terribly written - using so many stereotypes and just nonsense that has nothing to do with neurodivergences, so I hope this helps educate writers and give them more confidence to write such characters.

For reference, I have Autism and ADHD, as well as many friends with either, therefore this information is coming directly from a neurodivergent.

This guide will be split into three parts: characterisation in both Autism and ADHD, Autism chracterisation and ADHD characterisation. This being because Autism and ADHD, while two different disorders, do have some overlaps.

TERMS:

Neurodivergent - describes those differing in mental or neurological function from what is considered typical or normal

Neurotypical - describes those who are considered normal and do not differ in mental or neurological function

NOTE - Not everyone is the same. Everyone is different and will act and feel in different ways, this is simply an overview of how Autism and ADHD typically can be characterised

MUTUAL CHARACTERISATION OF AUTISM AND ADHD:

As mentioned before, both Autism and ADHD do have overlapping traits that can make them look similar at times, although it is important to remember they are two very different disorders.

Autism and ADHD are NOT mental illnesses or learning disabilities. They are neurological disorders that people are born with, and cannot be treated or cured. Neurodivergents can learn techniques to help manage their difficulties, however. It is important to note that while these are not mental illnesses, it is very common for neurodivergents to have mental illnesses (particularly anxiety or depression) or struggle with learning as a result of their difficulties.

MASKING:

Masking is a technique that neurodivergents develop in order to act or speak in a way that is ‘socially acceptable’ or neurotypical by observing and replicating neurotypicals in different situations. This includes subjects such as not stimming/keeping still, not saying particular things, following social cues, speaking with specific tones at specific times and so on.

Not every neurodivergent will mask but most do. Everyone does this to a different extent; some mask 24/7 to the point where you would barely be able to recognise any ‘abnormal’ traits, whereas others only mask in more serious or professional situations and let loose around friends or family. It is up to you as the writer to decide how your character will mask, however there tend to be some trends. For example, those with high-function Autism (especially girls) are much better maskers than low-functioning Autism (especially boys).

Masking is exhausting; it takes a lot of effort to, essentially, act as a completely different person for the entire day. This does not mean that neurodivergents are two-faced in any aspect however. Neurodivergents simply tweak their existing personalities to ‘fit in’ with the people or situation.

Masking in writing:

It is quite difficult to write masking as the person is essentially just acting like ‘normal’. However, there are some things you can include that help demonstrate masking:

Adapted stims* that are much smaller and undetectable than a person’s usual stims, such as fiddling with their fingers or edge of their sleeve, looking around often or slight movements such as swaying or playing with jewellery they are wearing

Speaking more or less than usual and with much more changes in their pitch and tone

Slight cracks in a character’s masking, such as stimming when others aren’t looking, not holding eye-contact when speaking, face or tone falling flat at points

*Stims will be explained in the next section

STIMMING:

Stimming refers to self-stimulating, repetitive behaviours that are done to often calm a person down when in stress, or to show high levels of emotion such as happiness. Both neurodivergents and neurotypicals stim, however there are some difference.

The most common examples of stims are bouncing your leg when sitting in a chair, clicking your pen repeatedly or tapping on a table, which are things that most people have done at some point. The difference is that neurodivergents have a lot less control over their stims, and they tend to be much ‘bigger’, louder, distracting or harmful. It is also much more difficult for a neurodivergent to stop or ‘hold in’ their stims, causing more stress and agitation. Some people have small stims like fiddling with their hands, others have much bigger stims like waving their arms around, and some have harmful stims such as scratching or banging their head against a wall.

Stimming in writing:

If you are ever asked to write about how a character would help someone else/a reader with their stimming, please never ever write about the character stopping the other person/reader. This is extremely harmful for the stimming character and projects a view that stimming is bad or ‘naughty’, and many people have faced trauma over being forced to stopped stimming as it is seen as disrespectful or distracting. Stimming is often one of the only ways neurodivergents can clearly express their emotions. If you stop a stim, the person will simply stim in another way. Instead, try these ways:

Stim toys that the character can use, these are often small and discrete, and can allow the character to stim without harmful, loud or large movements

Distracting the character with something else, possibly an activity, something to hold, or audio/visual distractions

Reassure the character that these stims are ok and they are safe to do around other characters

Take notice of the situation the character is in, why are they stimming? Are they anxious? Are they excited? It is better to prevent the situation in the case of stress rather than try and stop the person from stimming, and allow the character to stim when feeling happy

In romantic situations, allowing the character to stim with their partner shows high levels of trust and acceptance, and it is also comforting for the stimming character to often use aspects of their partner to stim, such as playing with their partner’s fingers or hair

Exercise is a great way of helping those who stim often to release pent up energy

Stimmers can trigger other stimmers, so if you have two stimmers in a room together, chances are they will stim together, getting louder and bigger than usual

SENSORY SENSITIVTY:

Both those with Autism and/or ADHD tend to struggle with sensory sensitivity. This describes how people are easily affected by sensory input (sight, sound, taste, touch and smell). Most cases of sensory sensitivity end in distress, fear, panic and overload, however there are some people who feel comforted by high levels of sensory input. When people deal with too much sensory input, they often go into a ‘meltdown’. This is different for everyone, but often includes irritability, panic, shutting themselves off from others, extreme stimming and a feeling of being severely overwhelmed. Some people cannot speak at all during these episodes. while others may shout or make noises. They are often mistaken for tantrums, bad behaviour or just being grumpy. Young people tend to have much more active meltdowns, such as shouting, stimming, running off etc, however older people (especially girls) then to be more quiet, shut off and unable to continue speaking or doing tasks. That being said, everyone is different and anyone can have a different meltdown.

Sensory sensitivity in writing:

The best way to describe sensory sensitivity in writing is relating it to pain or panic. Often those with low tolerance to sensory input describe loud noises, for example, as physical pain in their head, or certain materials as making them feel faint or nauseous.

Sensory sensitivity relates to any sense, so some people may be terrified of certain noises, feel panicked by certain smells or feelings or feel sick/vomit from certain tastes - please understand the severity of this for some people

Neurodivergents often find techniques to help them with this, such as wearing noise cancelling headphones or playing music or audio to distract them

The best way to help someone during a meltdown is to help them out of the situation and leave them to decompress. This might include letting them sit in a dark room for a while, laying in silence or touching an item/smelling something that brings them comfort

Describing a meltdown for a character can often be similarly written like a panic attack, and often meltdowns can lead to panic attacks for some people, such as an increased heart rate, sweating, crying, hyperventilating/heavy breathing etc.

Struggling to write sensory overload? Try and think how you would feel if you had 30 different voices screaming at you at once, with bright lights and super itchy clothing. Really panicked, scared and overwhelmed right?

Those who are sensitive to sensory input often hear/feel/smell/see things much louder/easier/more extreme than others, so while something may be quiet to one person, it seems really loud to another

HABITS AND COMPLUSIONS

Neurodivergences come with a lot of habits and compulsions, somewhat similar to traits of OCD. These are things such as having to have particular routines, having to carry certain items with them at all times (mine are my BTS water bottle and earphones lol). Without fulfilling these habits, compulsions and comfort items, a person can become extremely stressed, panicked and overloaded.

Habits and compulsions in writing:

Writing these can go from very subtle to extreme, it could be that someone has to get ready in the morning in a particular order, eat their food in a certain way/order or follow a particular route to get somewhere

The odd thing is that neurodivergents are actually pretty bad at developing habits, a neurodivergent could do the same thing over and over every single day, but completely forget to do it one day and never do it again

When writing for characters, some characters may be able to mask their distress when their habits/compulsions are not fulfilled, however others can not do so at all, but either way this sends the character into feeling of panic and distress

A character may develop certain habits/compulsions for different reasons, it could be from experiences, completely random, comforting senses or familiarity and fear

For example when walking into my nearest town I have to walk a very specific route on a specific side of the road or I freak out, this is because it’s what I’m used to and I struggle to deal with change

Speaking of change, a character can be written as anxious or irritated when plans are changed

SPECIAL INTERESTS/HYPER-FIXATIONS:

Probably my favourite topic - neurodivergents often develop special interests and hyper-fixations. These relate to specific subjects or activities that a person will learn about or engage in with extreme focus and dedication. Some common examples are trains and butterflies, where a person will learn and memorise every type of train, or every type of butterfly to exist, and how different trains work or the life cycles of butterflies. This can be of any topic though, as a child my personal special interest was Ancient Egypt and I spent all of my free time learning about the history. As I’ve gotten older, this has changed and my hyper-fixations have been mostly BTS and Haikyuu (with some short ones in between).

Special interests/hyper-fixations in writing:

Info-dumping! Characters with special interests can often be written with moments of info-dumping, where they will talk about their special interest for a long period of time to someone else. They are often very excited, talk quickly and possibly even seem a little frantic when trying to explain their interest - this is something they have little control over and tend to talk for too long or at inappropriate times

Stereotypes are often written in special interests, particularly the example I gave about trains - not every neurodivergent likes trains, please be creative when thinking about what special interest your character may have, if they have one at all

A character may have one long-standing special interest that they’ve been learning about for many years, or they can flutter between multiple hyper-fixations in the span of a few days

Hyper-fiaxtions can affect a character in ways such as forgetting to eat or sleep, forgetting to do other commitments or becoming extremely upset, stressed or unmotivated when that interest is no longer doable (such as if a TV series ends)

Some characters may be embarrassed about their interests, whereas others will happily info-dump with no concerns

FRIENDSHIPS AND RELATIONSHIPS

Both Autism and ADHD can cause difficulties in making and keeping friendships or relationships. This is often due to struggles in communication, forgetting to speak to people, getting bored of social interaction, getting overwhelmed and feeling too ‘different’ from everyone else. Some people, however, can make friends every easily, particularly more extroverted and confident types. Autistics in particular tend to have small groups of friends that they feel truly comfortable with, and may struggle to understand why a person needs other friends/ a large group. This can lead to feelings of ejectment or jealously. A neurodivergent will often struggle to know how a person feels about them without being directly told, and will need frequent reassurance that this feeling is continuous.

AUTISM CHARACTERISATIONS

Talking too much or very little - about 40% of people with Autism are mute, meaning they cannot speak. Characters could also be selectively mute, meaning they can only speak in situations they are comfortable with, or certain people

Autism is a communication disorder, majorly affecting a person’s ability to communicate and understand socialisation. Here is how to characterise Autism:

NOTE - I have used functioning labels here as, personally, I prefer to use them and is more often used where I am from, however some people prefer not to, please keep this in mind

Speaking out of turn - this is either because they do not understand the social cue of waiting until someone else has finished to talk, or because they will forget what is on their mind if they don’t say it immediately

Taking jokes or words literally - this can cause character’s to become distressed when they do not understand a joke, or end up doing a task that was not meant to happen because they took a conversation literally. This also include having difficulty understanding figures of speech such as ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’

Having difficulty understanding the rules of social interactions - this covers a range of things, from struggling to know what to say when speaking to a cashier at a store, to not knowing what to say in certain situations. An example of this is if someone said ‘hi, my name is ....”, the social cue is to respond with ‘hello, it’s nice to meet you, my name is ...”, however those with Autism tend not to understand this and may reply with something else. In my experiences, I often panic and say ‘thank you’ instead, despite this not being the ‘correct’ reply

Expressing the wrong emotions - Autism makes it very difficult to understand emotions, either from others or expressing them yourself. While others immediately know a smile means someone is happy, this is not something that is easy to understand in Autism. An autistic person may laugh or smile during negative situations, or look upset or mad in happy situations as they are either unaware of how they are carrying their body language, or simply do not know what body language fits with what emotion

Difficulty understanding emotion of others - whether it be verbal or non-verbal, it can be very difficult for those with Autism to understand what others are feeling and can often jump to the wrong conclusions

Using the wrong tone of voice or having a ‘robotic’ tone - For the same reason as the last point, those with Autism tend to either sound robotic at times, or use the wrong tone in the wrong situations, such as sounding angry when they are not, however they are often unaware of this when it happens. This also means they tend to be more blunt and literal in their own speech

Not understanding hints - those with Autism often need to be spoken to very directly as they struggle to understand hints or ‘read between the lines’. This could be anywhere from not understanding hints of romantic feelings, to someone mentioning that the trash is getting too full (as a hint that it needs to be taken out)

Difficulty with focus and following lists - this is an overlap with ADHD however the reasoning is often different, autistic people are often perfectionists, so if you give them a list of things to remember, they will focus so hard on remembering the first thing correctly that they forget the rest. Difficulty to focus is often due to a lack of interest in the topic

Attention to detail and ‘all or nothing’ - Autistic people are great at paying attention to small details and often focus on that more than the big picture. They are also very ‘all or nothing’ with how they delegate their focus, if they are interested in something they will put their entire energy and focus into it until its perfect, if they aren’t interested? They probably wont do it at all, this often means that some Autistic people struggle academically because they don’t feel interested in the topics, and therefore have no motivation to do the work

Great at following rules and instructions - despite being bad at lists, Autistic people tend to be good at following rules, this is because they are often black and white, literal and easy to understand, they like structure!

Increased skills and abilities - those with autism are often more creative and intelligent in a wide variety of skills that neurotypicals, in fact to be diagnosed with high-functioning autism, you must have a higher-than-average IQ. Unfortunately the stereotype is that Autistics are dumb or stupid - this is not the case at all

Boys vs girls - everyone is different, however boys and girls tend to act very differently. Boys tend to be more extroverted and loud and particularly struggle with understanding emotions or talking in turn. Girls tend to be more introverted, quiet and can mask much better, but struggle more when knowing if it is acceptable to speak

No empathy? - this is what people often relate to Autism, however this is inaccurate. People with Autism can and do feel empathy, however it tends to be slightly different. For example, if a neurotypical told another neurotypical about a bad situation they went through, the other person would often reply with ‘I’m sorry that happened to you, I hope you feel better soon”. A neurodivergent, however, would often reply like this, “something similar happened to me once.....”. This often comes across rude to neurotypicals, however it is much easier for a neurodivergent to relate the person’s feeling to their own experiences, and share comfort by letting the person know they are not alone

Difficulty with eye contact - good body language often explains that eye contact is key, however this is extremely difficulty for neurodivergents

Forgetfulness - to be honest I don’t know why this is, autistics are just really forgetful. You need to repeatedly tell them to do something or they wont do it

Planning - autistics often need and enjoy planning their schedule. They find comfort in knowing exactly when, where and how things are happening and with who

Shyness and introverted? - many autistics will be shy, introverted and struggle with social anxiety, but this is not the case for everyone. A person can be autistic and be super confident, loud and extroverted - it is a stereotype that being autistic makes you shy and quiet

REMEMBER - AUTISM IS A SPECTRUM DISORDER MEANING PEOPLE CAN RANGE FROM MILD TO SEVERE TRAITS, NOT EVERYONE WILL HAVE EVERY SINGLE TRAIT

AUTISM STEREOTYPES:

Everyone likes trains

They are rude and blunt

They are stupid/unintelligent

They cannot understand rules

They cannot feel empathy

They are quiet and shy

They are disruptive

AD(H)D CHARACTERISATION

ADHD is a condition that affects the focus and attention of a person. Here’s how to characterise someone with ADHD:

Not everyone is hyperactive - firstly, the ‘hyperactive’ part of ADHD doesn’t often mean physically hyperactive, but a person can have ADD where they do not show hyperactive traits

Difficulty focusing - this is much more than just not being able to focus, there are many reasons as to why this is, including getting distracted easily (by external sources or their own thoughts). finding it difficult to understand social interactions, feeling overwhelmed

Hyperfocusing - on the flip side, ADHD can cause people to hyperfocus on certain things, where it takes all their time and energy and they forget to do other things such as eat or sleep

Difficulty with eye contact - good body language often explains that eye contact is key, however this is extremely difficulty for neurodivergents

Difficulties controlling emotions and mood swings - this is often comes out in anger and frustration. This can be for various reasons: they are frustrated that they cannot focus like others, a lack of motivation, get easily stressed and insecurity

Restlessness - this is often seen as being always ‘on the go’, they need to be busy at all times doing different activities. In writing this can be shown as excessive talking, fidgeting, getting bored easily or taking risks

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria - this is an emotional response to rejection or criticism which often looks like insecurity and anxiety. This could be real rejection, or perceived rejection, for example someone saying they are too busy to hang out may trigger an emotional response of rejection, low mood and anxiety in someone with ADHD. This can also lead to anger or panic, and causes people to become ‘people pleasers’ or not try at all

Poor organisation - the opposite of Autism where those with ADHD struggle with planning, organising, misplacing items and keeping things tidy. It is difficult to understand priorities, separate relevant and irrelevant information and time management. Those with ADHD often begin tasks and do not finish them due to restlessness, distractions or feeling overwhelmed by the task

Difficulties starting tasks - ADHD can make it very difficult to begin tasks as they feel too overwhelming, difficult or take too much focus. Breaking down tasks into smaller sections can help this a lot

Forgetfullness - out of sight, out of mind is often the case with ADHD, and so things like post-it notes and reminders can help people remember things they need to do

Multiple thoughts at once - neurotypicals tend to only have one thought/idea in their head at a time, however those with ADHD often juggle multiple thoughts which can lead to distraction and frustration

‘All or nothing’ - Those with ADHD tend to be ‘all or nothing’ with how they delegate their focus, if they are interested in something they will put their entire energy and focus into it until its perfect, if they aren’t interested? They probably wont do it at all, this often means that those with ADHD may struggle academically because they don’t feel interested in the topics. Unlike Autism, they tend not to focus well with repetitive tasks as this lacks simulation

Medication - unlike Autism, ADHD can be helped with stimulant medication that allows them to focus a bit better. This is not a cure as ADHD cannot be cured, however it can be beneficial to some to help manage their struggles

Acting without thinking and being impulsive - to find some stimulation, those with ADHD may act without thinking of their consequences, or can engage in risky behaviour as other avenues may seem boring, please note this is not the case for everyone, and these ‘risks’ may be very mild like trying a new flavour of ice cream. They can act impulsively too and struggle to wait their turn

Communication difficulties - while ADHD is not a communication disorder, it can have affects on communication such as talking out of turn, starting conversations at the wrong times, being insensitive to particular topics or getting too distracted to focus on the conversation

Need reminders to take care of themselves - due to a mix of hyperfocusing and not focusing well, those with ADHD may often forget to do things such as eat, drink, sleep or shower

Quite easy to get their attention - when someone with ADHD is daydreaming, getting distracted or not focusing, it can be as simple as giving them a tap or a smile to bring their attention back to the matter at hand, even if these needs to be done multiple times

Rewarding behaviour - this technique works well as rewarding good behaviour releases dopamine, which is the hormone often lacked in those with ADHD, this allows people to connect activities and behaviours with positive feelings and are more likely to do it again in the future

ADHD STEROTYPES:

ADHD is ‘diet’ Autism

Those with ADHD cannot sit still

They are disruptive

Everyone with ADHD is hyperactive, loud and extroverted

Thoughts on fandom: inclusion and engagement.

There’s been some stuff floating around on Tumblr about strife in the CO/WS fandom, and though I haven’t been explicitly named-dropped on anything public, my DMs have been... active. lol Rather than rehash what’s been said already, I just want to impart a little wisdom and perspective in the hopes it may soothe frayed feelings and offer a way ahead for cultivating a respectful community. As someone who has been an active participant in online fandoms since the mid-’90s, which was the advent of online fandom content creation (shout out to my fellow X-Philes!), and who has also spent a chunk of her professional life managing social media for the federal government and for activist groups, I can promise you it’s all gonna be okay.

Here’s some context for why strife happens and what we can do to create a more inclusive and communicative fandom environment.

1) It sounds cliché, but fandoms go through growing pains.

In the case of the Simon Snow fandom, what was once a small and cozy space untouched by cataclysmic events (such as the release of *gasp* a sequel) has grown exponentially in a relatively short amount of time following the release of Wayward Son. Newcomers are eager to find a home in this space at the same time as folks who’ve been here a while may be consciously or unconsciously wary about widening their circle, and It’s important to remember that this is not necessarily an expression of bad behavior on either side but just human psychology doing its thing.

The byproduct, however, is that tension and stress builds over time from the lack of meaningful communication across the divide, which subsequently fuels misunderstandings. Ironically, the interfaces we use to communicate don’t help with this because any existing communication about the tension happens in tiny vacuums until a trigger goes off and bad feelings go public.

Way Ahead: These moments of destabilization are opportunities to see where we can be more self aware about how we engage with fandom and the kind of community we want to be. Can you promote, support, or befriend someone trying to gain a foothold? If yes, please do! Each person must reach their own decision about what they can do within the confines of their available energy, health, and time, but a little self awareness goes a long way as long as you’re honest with yourself and others if applicable about what you can contribute. Anyone who judges you for it isn’t worth the strife.

2) In a fandom comprised of vulnerable/marginalized people, it’s more accurate to say that cliques are “bubbles of trust.”

This one's important. Just by nature of the source material, the CO/WS fandom includes fans with a wide array of backgrounds and experiences, especially when it comes to those who identify with the characters’ queerness, mental illness, and/or trauma. I really believe––based on individual conversations/group chats––that the difficult lived experiences that so many of our fandom peers have endured has produced one of the most open, aware, and accepting fandoms I’ve had the pleasure of participating in. Our vulnerability is, in a real way, our strength.

That said, a community of survivors also has the side effect of cultivating small circles of engagement that I call “bubbles of trust.” When you’re a survivor of abuse, marginalization, mental illness, fill-in-the-blank, it’s often quite hard to risk casting a wide net and expanding your circle to include new faces––which can subsequently be internalized by equally sensitive and vulnerable newcomers as rejection, judgement, or inadequacy.

Way Ahead: First of all, there may indeed be gatekeeping and exclusion going on. But before internalizing someone’s cagey behavior as gatekeeping or purposely exclusionary, ask yourself if you have all the information. Many people are private (I include myself in this assessment) because life has regrettably taught them to be this way, and so they may insulate themselves to a small group of people who have earned their trust. Some people might also triggered by certain content (case in point: smut triggers my anxiety) so they don’t engage with it. Others might have something in their pasts that define how they handle certain subjects (for example, a person of color should not be tone policed for getting angry when confronted with a racialized microagression, however accidental it was). You just don’t know what you don’t know.

The solution here is to regularly check your privilege and ask questions in a private space if you sense you’re being treated unfairly by someone. If you go public with your grievances in hopes of mobilizing the mob, you may accidentally find yourself stepping into the role of the aggressor instead of the victim.

3) Social Media is not built to help you get engagement. It’s built to help itself make money off of you.

Repeat after me: Hits/likes are not a measurable indicator of talent or worth. There are ridiculously talented folks on Tumblr and elsewhere who, for whatever reason, haven’t had their viral moment, and it’s not their fault. Loads of factors come into play where things like likes, reblogs, and comments are concerned, among them being posting frequency, subject matter, the time of day, the day of the week, the week of the month, the month of the year, the current administration, the stock exchange, the concentration of middle class users, who just won the Superbowl, a madman trying to steal an election and undermine the democratic process, a PANDEMIC, do you get where I’m going with this?? lol

At the end of the day, my humble successes have been helped along by good luck, good timing, high profile signal boosters, and an absurd amount of work. (This is why I try to signal boost new work whenever I get a chance over at @vkelleyshares.)

So while you cannot control Tumblr’s interface, trends at large, or your fellow users, here’s what you can do to ensure you give your work the best possible chance of exposure.

Have an image ready to go with your post. Tumblr is a visual platform (no matter what it says about being good for text). Not good with images? Set up a Canva.com account and get access to free graphic software with a gazillion templates to create whatever attractive image you want to attach to your post.

Keep the outward facing text brief and easy on the eyes. Too long and eyes will glaze over. Put excess text behind a “read more.”

You may think you’re being cute when you do this, but don’t put yourself down in your posts. (Don’t put yourself down in general, of course.) Doing so acts as engagement repellant. If you don’t believe in your work, no one else will.

Related: Be your best cheerleader. Confidence is a magnet, and if you don’t have it, go ahead and fake it until you start to convince yourself you are worth the buzz. So promote yourself! You have gifts that only you can impart. Use that knowledge to fuel everything you do from your art/fiction writing to your outreach with other content creators, and by golly, if someone’s done it already, acknowledge that contribution and then tell the world that this is YOUR unique take on it.

Treat your fellow fandom creators as human beings, not art/fiction/content boosting machines. I cannot count how many times I’ve had folks slide into my DMs with offers of friendship only to disappear once they realize I’m not available to draw a picture for their fic. It hurts because it’s manipulative and it makes me want to hole up and not signal boost anyone. Creators who truly support each other will not give off a transactional vibe. I want to help you reach more people, but not if that’s all I’m good for in your eyes.

The long and short of it: Lead with compassion, do your best with the opportunities at your disposal, and remember that fandom belongs to everyone in it. ❤️

What saves a fandom made of sensitive and vulnerable souls from imploding when it goes through growing pains is radical compassion from those who can offer it. Begin with the assumption that your fellow fandomers are not trying to harm you, and wade into the water knowing that your insight into the lives of your peers is limited by default and you may need to temper your words or actions accordingly. If you’re a content creator, save compassion for yourself as well, as there are indeed challenges to gaining an audience, and lack of engagement does not mean you lack talent or skill. Be your best advocate, and if you have the bandwidth to lift up a fellow creator and make a new friend, please, go ahead do it!

And finally, fandom belongs to everyone, and no one has a monopoly on characters, tropes, or themes. Create and consume what you love (with respect for your more vulnerable peers), and bask in the variety, my friends!

(just wanna say sorry for how annoying this post is. thank you for ur patience if ur seeing this 💗)

I just meant for an artist as prolific as her she is, the quality of her work (at her PRIME too) falls into a bizarrely large range. she is a songwriter at her core but her biggest hits are lyrically vacant and pandering. she's gunning for Beatles and MJ records while her last hit is ME!. the same people that will cling to her cult classic fan favorite work (Red) will also admit it has some of her most forgettable songs.

And all legacy acts will have that of course, there will always be flatter songs on an album, or more commercial tracks pushed into the limelight, but Taylor operates at an EXTREME. the lower boundary on her album tracks fall far below what it does for maybe Springsteen or MJ or Fleetwood Mac, pushing into genuinely terrible. and her big songs are the most painfully formulated and forgettable. yet she still Is at legacy status. it's insane!

like I just think that for someone who's speciality and legacy itself is personal songwriting.. it's crazy how half her image, the range of her albums, and some of her most known work doesn't reflect that at all. and no album of hers is consistent with that to the next. she can go from the best album of her career to the worst and then back again. she'll hit the highest of highs and the lowest of lows on the same album.

Anyway this might be hard 2 understand bc I Am bad at articulating so I did use my unemployed time to make a visual aid LOL. this is INCREDIBLY subjective by the way but i think my opinions do somehow represent a junction between fan-held and critically held opinions.

(the lines representing the range I think the songs on each album fall into and the thicker part being where I think the majority fall. also the last one being like.. an example of the bounds and range of a generic 'legacy act' album from my experience - most songs falling in between average and great. also the album's chosen were just ones I thought were most illustrative. insanely subjective though)

also this is specifically in view of her as a Once In A Generation Artist. I think for a current popstar she is Incredibly consistent. but when you train in on her and view her work alongside other once in a lifetime artists it's an interesting comparison. I still think she's insanely talented etc etc I'm just interested in her epic highs and lows.

• He takes his fingers away to hold them out instead, making grabby hands until you smile and crawl into them, in turn, climbing on top of his lap and letting him press his face into the valley between your breasts so he could kiss the skin there while looking at you

• "I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong idea," he mumbles, nuzzling his head farther down

• "No baby, you're fine," You reassure him with a hand ruffling the strands of his hair
