jynx absolutely fascinates me as a game dev because they're like. inspiration but in the opposite way of literally everything they've ever done
jynx decided they want to make touhou-like shmups, and decided to approach this by building most patterns around extremely fast bullets relying entirely on player reaction or having already seen a pattern before, infamously the most disliked and player-antagonistic way of approaching bullet hells
jynx added a great iteration on touhou-like shmups with flash bombing, an infinitely regenerating way to clear bullets if you put yourself in active danger in contrast to the use of bombs as a safe but finite resource, and then made sure you could only use it if you aren't focusing your shots, which you spend over 90% of a touhou-like doing
jynx created "absurdly extra" stages just as a complete fuck you to the player. half of them are humanly impossible to complete
jynx's version of character development is to add more characters. jynx will drop one of the most fascinating backstories you've ever heard that has groundbreaking and sweeping impacts on len'en lore, yet somehow being entirely consistent with it, and then proceed to do literally nothing and minutes later introduce another character with one of the most fascinating backstories you've ever heard. len'en has 40+ characters and all of them have been in perpetual Big Things Are Coming hell for over half a decade
jynx has spent over an alledged 15 years working on the world and lore in mugenri and the outside world, desperately wants to share this and continually mentions the short stories and lore dumps they write, which we never see, because they have somehow convinced themself the only way to show this story is through touhou-likes, which are notable for showing "story" as an excuse for people to shoot bullets at each other
jynx treats feature creep like an arms race. there isn't a single idea they come up with that doesn't end up in a game or is planned to at a later date. len'en 4 is still technically unfinished despite it having enough paths to dwarf all the previous len'en games combined thrice over and featuring the entire cast of the series in it (i will stress again, 40+ characters), and they've promised a dlc with even more stuff to do
jynx wanted to make a mobile cafe management simulator after having made nothing but bullet hell shmups on pc, just because it sounded fun, realised their previous tools couldn't make mobile games well, realised they'd be going in entirely blind on a new tech stack, realised they'd be going in blind on a genre they have no experience with, decided to tag on a second entire game to the cafe management with a turn-based rpg, realised they also have no experience with that genre, continued anyway, learnt how to use unity from the ground up, realised the multitude of issues unity development brings, decided every single character also needed to be in this one with unique boss battles, realised the problems of having 40+ character assets and 5min+ music themes in a mobile game that very infamously is a platform you need to stick to strict asset and tech limitations, decided to stream in assets from a server, made it a live service game because it would be online and that was an obvious next step, stuck through it, totalling in five years of dev time to make a full "gacha" game that is generous beyond belief and makes them a net zero in ad revenue vs server costs
jynx iterates nothing. literally everything you see in their games is the first go and if it sucks, too bad
jynx creates all their music with default fl studio sounds and the touhou trumpet. everything's unmixed. they earnestly believe that loud = better
jynx, allegedly, "blacks out" when making music after hitting some kind of flow state, and wakes up with a complete track. like everything else, these are never iterated on
jynx wrote the entirety of len'en 4's 100,000+ word script in one week. i don't even have a funny comment for this one
jynx doesn't think len'en would fit the format of a visual novel despite the fact len'en 4 has a 100,000+ word script
jynx refuses to collab with anyone for any reason. motives unclear
jynx did three 12 hour back-to-back livestreams crunching to finish book of the cafe. literally no part of this is a good idea
jynx is like the quintessential representation of everything you shouldn't do as a game dev. they should have burnt out years ago and been remembered as nothing but a random quirky touhou ripoff that was an interesting yet janky interpretation but ultimately went nowhere and YET here we are coming in to len'ens decade anniversary
how the fuck is jynx a real person. why am i so obsessed with everything they've ever made

Mass Effect replay. Hackett called again, so off to do the 90% morality worlds instead of saving the galaxy:
-Hackett's glad I'm in the area. Sir, I'm in the Argos Rho cluster. Cacus is in Hades Gamma. That is not "in the area".
-Laying it on a bit thick, isn't he? It's an emergency situation, I'm the only one he trusts to handle it, hundreds will die (if you pick the renegade option)
-Shepard's learned well. If you go renegade and refuse the mission, they retort millions will die if they get sidetracked
-And once again, biotics are antagonists. Mass Effect 1's sub theme about the place of human biotics in the Alliance continues
Elevator News Broadcast
-So the Council revoked the status of an unnamed operative. Corrective actions have been taken.
Weren't Shepard's meetings with the Council at the start of the game public? Saren's hologram was huge.
Then my Shepard announced Saren was behind the attack on Eden Prime in the interview with Khalisah. I think they may have even said they were pursuing Saren?
Cover up or continuity error?
-Well, that was harder than necessary but Liara finally has Colossus armor. Meanwhile I'm running around in old Titan IV armor... Just have to have faith I'm smarter than Liara's or Tali's AI.
Plutus
-Nonuel is one of the oldest entries in star charts. Whose star charts? I'm going to presume the Alliance's.
-Two dead mercenaries, two beds in the trailer... Were the mercenaries a team that got in a fight over the loot?
Killing each other over the Matriach Dilinaga's writings is a bit excessive. Those things are everywhere, give it a day and you'll trip over another.
-Why are there two thresher maws and a mineral off the map. This is unnecessary.
Cacus
-Zayarter - So what are the geometric patterns of light? They never come up again. The remains of an old civilization? A current one in hiding?
-Faringor - So they just left the movie sets on the planet when they were done? Does C-Space not have laws against littering?
-Chohe - See, whoever lived in this trailer had three of Matriach Dilinaga's writings. There is no need to kill anyone over them.
-Did the mercenaries kill the dude attempting to salvage the satellite? It's notably unlootable.
-This mission is still a pain, but the guide I looked up remains true. Lure the biotic terrorists into the hallway.
-Except the terrorist leader never comes out. I always have to go find him. Thank you, Lift.
-"Evolution of Humanity", indeed. Biotics aren't an evolution, sir. They're a result of exposure to Element Zero and most exposed die or suffer horribly. How are you expecting to consistently create more biotics?
-All right, all the scientists survived. Time to go advance the plot.
Are we done now, Hackett? Are you happy?
I can't recall if he makes any requests for the UNC worlds that show up after Feros or Noveria.

September 20th, 2021 Full Moon
Tumblr media
September 20th Full Moon
Each Full Moon has a tendency to bring with it, disruption. It is a time that is naturally turbulent, and can trigger rebellious energy. People are more prone to pick a fight, or to get triggered into reactive and aggressive spaces.
This Full Moon, shows that our heads are definitely not in the clearest space for logical work; or for doing much in the way of mental processing. It is however, in a great space for doing personal observation work, and personal processing. People are naturally aligned to their intuition; and the Pineal Gland is in an active space at this time.
This time favors just observing things, more than being really actively involved; especially if we are looking for any insights or answers to things. It could be beneficial to keep pen and paper handy at this time; so that you can write down the different ideas and inspirations, that you are getting. Observation will be particularly powerful, where we feel pulled in two different directions. Others, may open up to you; but it is important to simply listen, and let them work through their own things. Do not get pulled into other people’s battles.
Success is strong right now; and we may find ourselves getting recognition, where we have been working consistently on things. The heavy workloads are likely to have paid off well, or are paying off well; and it is time to take a break to be in celebration, and to rejoice in what is coming through. If you are not busy processing things for your own path; then this will be a favorable time for light-hearted social gatherings.
It is during this time, that we want to share with others that are in need; and to realize that it is in coming together, as a team, that we will transform the injustices of our world. It is through working together, that we will be able to move through the stressful times. When people all give what they are abundant and strong in, then there is plenty for everyone.
We will need to be careful of any areas that feel stagnant right now. These areas will show where we have disconnected from God and our soul self. We will need to look at where there are lies, deceit, and manipulation happening. This could be with our own self, with others, or from others. Consider where you are enabling unfavorable patterns, within yourself and others. This must be handled, so that you can reconnect with the soul self; in order to move forward. It is through spiritual practices, and honoring the soul self; that we will break out of these patterns.
In the Northern Hemisphere, we have the Harvest Moon, the Fruit Moon, and the Corn Moon. In the form of the Harvest Moon, we are likely to be in the more introspective energy of the Full Moon. It calls for us to center into strong connection with our soul self and processes; and to place that before all other things. We may do best to give ourselves a personal retreat. It is a time, that shows us which relationships are working in true partnership with us; and which are in competition with us. We must release the competitive patterns; and focus on soul to soul connections, and strengthening the partnership between our soul self and human self.
In the energy of the Fruit Moon, we are called to create balance between responsibilities, and creativity or play in our lives. This is a time, to balance the adult and child selves; each are equally important and valuable to us. It will be valuable to observe where we are and are not, in balance in our life with things. We especially want to focus on having balance between forceful action and inaction. This can be done by observing things; and then taking command of them. True leaders bring out the assets of others, and lead by example; no force or dictator rules are necessary.
In the energy of the Corn Moon, we may see more deprivation and victim patterns surfacing. People may try to compete for success; instead of focusing on just simply seeing things through. This is a time for realizing, that in order for real and true success to come through; we need to stand as equals and united. This doesn’t make us all the same; but it means that we do not dominate others, nor submit to them. It means that we help each other grow stronger; and realize that nothing is better or worse than something else, even though programming in our society, has tried to make it that way.
In the Southern Hemisphere, we have the Sap Moon. This may find life feeling a bit heavier for our friends, in this part of the world. There is a strong need to handle responsibilities and obligations; and it is very likely, that people will resist meeting them. Things can feel overwhelming, and the “to do” list be more than we feel that we can handle; and growing daily. There is also rebellion energy; which means there will be a tendency to procrastinate, resist, and try to totally avoid what needs to get done. I would consider which item/s on your “to do” list, is the most stressful for you; and focus on those. Avoiding responsibilities, could put us on even harder paths. If you are in major rebellion or extreme resistance, then at least get a couple of smaller things done.
I welcome you to spend time in personal observation. What if this is an important part of self-care, which allows us to strengthen our relationship between the human self and the soul self?
I welcome you to stay out of other people’s battles. What if you listened to them; but didn’t get involved?
I welcome you to celebrate where your devotion to something, is paying off. What if acknowledging successes, creates inner abundance and thriving?
I welcome you to work with others, to help those in need. What if this is how we transform the injustices, within our world?
I welcome you to pay attention to stagnant areas. What if they are showing you where there is deceit, lies, and manipulation, that need to be cleared?
For Those In The Northern Hemisphere
I welcome you to place your soul processes and connection before other things. What if we need to focus on soul to soul communications, with our own self and others; instead of competing with them?
I welcome you to focus on balancing polarities in your life. What if this can be done by observing things; and then taking compassionate command of them?
I welcome you to break down hierarchies; and realize we are all equal, even though we are different and have different abilities. What if equality is not about being the same; but about not being better or worse than another?
For Those In The Southern Hemisphere
I welcome you to pay attention to rebellion energy; and do not let it keep you from doing, what needs to get done. What if you got your most stressful task completed, before going out to have fun?

An introduction to DeVita
Do you want to learn all about the AOMG artist DeVita? This article will cover everything you need to know about the third female member to join the labels roster.
The content of this article is also available in video format, embedded at the bottom of this article.
Prelude
Tumblr media
In early April of 2020, the Korean hip-hop label AOMG ambiguously announced that a new artist was signing onto the label. This label was grounded by the Korean-American triple-threat; Jay Park, who’s also one of its executives. This is a label with a very organic feel and artist-oriented nature, which stands out compared to many other music labels.
On April 3rd, the label’s official Instagram account posted a video. It was titled, “Who’s The Next AOMG?” where fellow AOMG members talked about this upcoming recruit. They sprinkled small hints and details by sharing their thoughts on the artist without mentioning who.
Around the world, fans immediately began speculating on who this could be. The major consensus was that it had to be the solo artist Lee Hi, due to reporting like this: “AOMG responds ‘nothing is confirmed’ to reports of Lee Hi signing on with the label”
A few other names got thrown in fan speculations like Hanbin (B.I), previous member of IKON, Jvcki Wai, and MOON (문) aka Moon Sujin. This despite a few of these already being signed to other labels.
On April 6th, three days later, the account was updated with a part two. This time dropping more hints, which would exclude many names from fan speculations.
On the 7th of April, the label’s official Instagram account posted a short teaser. The video sported an 80’s retrofuturistic setting, with a woman turned from the camera, dressed in all black, rocking braids, and some glistening high-heels. As it seemed to be a female, some were now certain that it had to be Lee Hi. A small few actually guessed correctly that the one who would be joining AOMG would be Ms DeVita.
Finally on April 9th, it was official! She debuted with the music video, from which the teaser clips was taken from, EVITA!, which accompanied the release of her EP, CRÈME.
Tumblr media
What does the name DeVita mean?
The name DeVita, draws inspiration and meaning from two things. Firstly, Eva Perón – also known as Evita – who was Argentina’s former First Lady. When Chloe was learning about Eva’s life, it inspired her to combine “Devil” and “Evita”, thus creating “DeVita”. The name signifies the duality of how both Eva Perón and DeVita could be perceived. Either being a devil, or an angel depending on the eye of the beholder. Secondly, Salvatore Di Vita, a character from Cinema Paradiso, was also a source of inspiration.
An introduction to DeVita
Chloe Cho – now known under the artist name DeVita – was born and raised in South Korea, until the age of eleven. In 2009, she moved to Chicago, where she would learn English.
In 2013, she went back to Korea and participated in the third season of the show; K-pop Star. A talent show, where the “big three” (the three largest music labels in Korea) hosts auditions to find the next big k-pop star. However she didn’t win, therefore neither got signed.
Tumblr media
Later on, she returned to Chicago and graduated high school. After reflecting on what she wanted to do next, she decided to make music. In 2014, her pursuit to become an artist brought her to the talent show Kollaboration. On this show, she performed covers and actually ended up being a finalist. Despite her talents, she did not triumph as the winner of the show.
Not letting these losses stop her, she started releasing music on Soundcloud. The earliest release I could find, Halfway Love (Ruff), was from 2016. Her catalogue consisted of both covers and original music.
One day, Kirin, an artist and CEO of the music label 8balltown Records, was introduced to DeVita’s music. He liked what he heard and the two linked up. In May of 2018, WEKEYZ, one of 8balltown’s producer duos released a track titled Sugar. This track featured both DeVita, and the AOMG rapper Ugly Duck. This was the beginning of many collaborations to come.
On August 28th of 2018, just a few months later, AOMG released Sugar (Puff Daehee Mix).
This was a remix done by Puff Daehee, the alter ego of Kirin. Along with this track, it was accompanied by a music video starring Kirin, DeVita, and Ugly Duck. For most people, this was their first time seeing DeVita.
Tumblr media
DeVita continued doing features on many songs by Korean artists while creating a little buzz for herself. There’s one notable feature, which could be seen as an important milestone in her career. That is her feature on the track Noise, from AOMG artist Woo Won Jae’s project, titled af.
In a tweet a few days after the release of CRÈME, she shared the significance of this moment.
“I was still making minimum wage working at a restaurant back when Noise dropped- I wrote my part during my shift on the back of this receipt paper. This was about a year and a half ago. A little bit after that I got a call from Pumpkin at 3am Chicago time. He said Jay wanted to meet in Philly in 4 hours. They put me on a plane and the rest is history.”
The phone call she mentioned in her tweet, about Jay wanting to meet, must have been made around September 2018. Jay was performing in Philadelphia at the time. The moment they met in Philadelphia was actually captured through a photo of the two. However, this picture ended up getting removed later on.
Tumblr media
Fast forward a few months and Jay had just released his Ask About Me EP. The project focused on a western audience, so he went to the States on a promo run. During his visit, he also met up with DeVita once again, as can be seen here.
Finally, on April 9th, her being signed to AOMG was officially announced and she debuted with her EP titled CRÈME. Her joining AOMG, looked like something that happened pretty naturally. The vast majority of artists she had collaborated on tracks with happened to be AOMG members. Getting comfortable with the AOMG family, likely made the decision to join crystal clear.
Artistically
Just a quick look at her body of work thus far, a majority of it is in English. However, she has no issues singing in Korean, as proven by her feature on Code Kunst’s; Let u in. The tone in her voice has this sort of mixture of many singers, a melting pot of sorts. It reminds me of Audrey Nuna, SAAY, H.E.R, some vocal riffs from Dinah Jane, and at times, just a tiny bit of Ariana Grande.
As an artist, she’s still in the early stages of carving out her own unique sound and style. There’s incredible potential here, but her distinct identity is not completely there yet. I see before me a caterpillar that within a couple years, will transform into a butterfly, with its own identifiable pattern to spread its wings out on.
From what she’s shown so far, I would say she seems most comfortable doing R&B and soul music. However, beyond a quick description I prefer to refrain from categorizing her. Mostly because artists generally feel limited when categorized. More importantly, because we have no idea what she has in store for the future.
Debut EP: CRÈME
Tumblr media
CRÈME is DeVita’s “crème de la crème”. She constantly modified the tracklist to present her debut project in a way that held her personal standard; essentially presenting us her best tracks. The result is CRÈME, which consists of five tracks, with a runtime of fourteen minutes altogether.
This EP showcases the fact that she is a competent songwriter, able to write some soulful, emotional ballads. It is completely in English and all the tracks are written by her, telling both life stories of her own and that of others. A majority of the production was handled by her “musical soulmate”; TE RIM, but other notable names, like Code Kunst show up as well.
Tracks:
Movies, introduces the project in a very gentle manner. In the track, DeVita paints a picture of a criminal couple, getting a rush, by committing crimes together. The lyrics feel inspired by movies like Bonnie and Clyde. My initial thoughts were that, for some ears, it could possibly be “too” calm as an opener. It doesn’t demand attention the way EVITA! does. Simply put, it’s not a bad track. I would just have put this track later on in the EP.
EVITA!, is something different compared to what I hear from others in the K-R&B lane. I love the 80’s aesthetic in both the track and music video. Sonically, the nostalgic saxophone riffs, warm lush synth pads, thumping bass line, results in a trip back to the 80s. With this recipe, topped with DeVita’s “current” contemporary soul and R&B voice makes for an interesting combination. The music video had that futuristic 80’s look with the neon colors, and I loved how the guns she played around with looked a lot like the “Needlers” from the Halo franchise.  The title is once again just like DeVita’s name, an ode to the controversial Eva Perón. The instrumental was originally used by TE RIM, the producer of the track in 2017. His version has the same title as DeVita’s version and I recommend giving that one a listen as well, as it has a different feel to it. This track was definitely one of the highlights of the EP.
All About You, is a simple yet beautiful piano love ballad. Originating from her own tales of love, her vocals effortlessly capture what she felt during these moments.
1974 Live, is yet another ballad, but this time, with a calm guitar backing, playing a poppier R&B chord progression. DeVita’s voice is given a lot of space to be in the center of the track. As soon as I heard this track I became curious. What was the significance of this year, which would have her title the track as such? My questions were left unanswered… until the EP had marinated a while, when she tweeted: “1974 Live is about Christine Chubbuck”. In case you’re unfamiliar, Christine Chubbuck was a television news reporter, who made history in 1974. She was the first person to commit suicide live on air. According to her mother Christine’s suicide would on paper be due to an unfullfilling personal life. All throughout her life, she had experienced unreciprocated love. With this information tying back to the track, it becomes a lot less ambiguous and reveals a more cohesive narrative.
Show Me, is the final track of the EP, featuring immaculate production from the talented CODE KUNST. The sound is very moody, which fits her voice like a glove. This is my favorite performance on the entire EP, both lyrically and vocally. The lyrics present someone who’s fed up dealing with men, who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Now she’s looking for love with someone who’s honest and “real”.
With the project being a year old now, it has already gotten her nominated for both Rookie of the Year along with EVITA being nominated for Best R&B & Soul Track in the 18th iteration of the Korean Music Awards.
A majority of listeners seemed to enjoy the project. Many seem to be in love with her voice judging by the endless amounts of praise she has received, often described as painfully addicting, soothing, smooth, and so on.
I also asked a friend who’s a huge fan of Korean music, especially the hiphop and r&b scene to share her thoughts on the project. Here’s what she said:
"This whole project is empowering, in particular the tracks Show Me and EVITA! DeVita being a new artist, managed to impress me and many more listeners through this EP. As mentioned earlier, empowering lyrics with unique melodies and beats. Especially with the track EVITA! The fact that 1974 Live and EVITA! was referring to, two historically important women, is something that I love. This is one of my favorite EP:s of 2020 and DeVita is now included in my list of favorite artists." @Haonsmom
From what I’ve seen, only a few have been vocal about not really being too fond of the project. Some were left a bit disappointed, as they were expecting more hip-hop and R&B from an AOMG artist. The lack of “danceable” tracks was also a concern to some. Despite these criticisms, one thing was always mentioned; the girl has a beautiful voice and is obviously talented.
After listening to this EP, I hear a lot of potential. Being an EP with just five tracks, it definitely avoids overstaying its welcome. It’s brief enough to allow a listen through the entire project, no matter what you’re doing. My favorite tracks would have to be Show Me and EVITA!, but I found the whole project to be enjoyable. This EP is sprinkled with lovely vocal performances and simple but captivating production. I do still stand by my opinion that Movies would have fit better later in the tracklist if you’re chasing that mainstream ear.
I think the way EVITA! kicks you in the face, demanding attention, would’ve been a better fit as the opening track. In contrast to the other tracks, the energy level is unique, making the placement feel odd as the rest of the tracks have a chill vibe. All in all, this project gave me a taste of the “crème” but left me with a curious yearning for what this chef will whip up for dessert.
Bright future ahead
The addition of more female artists to the AOMG roster was much needed. Hoody was the first and only female member for about four years. This was the case up until late 2019, where she was then joined by sogumm, who had just won AOMG’s audition program called SignHere. Now funnily enough after DeVita, Lee Hi actually did end up officially signing with AOMG on July 22, last year.
Based on what I’ve heard during Devita’s Kollaboration days, she has improved immensely. This topped with her leaving the impression of someone passionate about their craft, bodes well for what's to come. She seems to be someone who'll constantly evolve.
Following an artist, at the early stages of their career, is something that I always find exciting. With such a lovely debut, I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for DeVita.

Note
I have a character who was a slave but was rescued and freed after about 2 years in slavery and eventually goes on to rescue other people in slavery. While in slavery, he was punished often with denial of food as well as being whipped and beaten when he refused to work. He also had his tongue partially cut out as a punishment. I already have a good idea about the psychological effects he is going to have, but I’m struggling with the physical effects and how long it would take to recover
Part of the answer here depends on this character’s age because while adults can generally make a good recovery from periods of starvation the effects on children (especially young children) are a lot more long lasting.
The best places to start for the effects of starvation on adults are probably the Minnesota Starvation Experiment and the World Health Organisation (WHO, general link here, 1999 pamphlet on malnutrition in all ages here).
Recovery is generally pretty quick unless someone’s at the point where they’re near death.
Refeeding syndrome can be an issue in some cases (especially famine or forced labour camps) but it doesn’t have to be one here. If the character is eating normally (as opposed to being fed by IV for instance) then refeeding syndrome is less likely. My understanding is that this is because the body suppresses appetite during starvation so that it only takes in what it can manage (appetite recovers quickly as the patient regains weight.)
There’s a detailed NHS guide to refeeding in adult here. It should give you an idea of how at risk your character is and how much food he’ll be able to handle in his first few days of recovery.
A physical recovery period of around 1-3 months depending on the degree of starvation is reasonable. In this case by ‘recovery’ I mean being able to do normal physical activity, a return to previous healthy weight, or higher weight, return to normal appetite and nutrient levels.
Recovery can be delayed by additional illness: it’s easier for starving people to contract diseases or infections and it takes longer for them to fight them off.
There’s also a difference depending on whether you’re talking about a character who is consistently under fed and forced to work versus a character who is usually provided with enough food but sometimes denied food completely/on very reduced rations for periods of a few days. Consistent starvation and malnutrition is much more usual in slavery and… much more likely to be fatal.
A character that has short periods where food is denied them (no more then two days) and is then allowed to eat as much as they want is probably not going to need hospital supervision/treatment for starvation. If that doesn’t sound like your character then the procedure is usually just to let the person eat as much as they want of whatever they want. The difficulty for people at this sort of stage is more about organising giving out food then it is about keeping doctors on hand to monitor them.
Now I know less about this but I think there is some evidence that this sort of pattern of intermittent starvation (ie periods where the character is starved, then allowed to eat and this is repeated) can cause some pretty serious health effects. It can also make disordered eating behaviour more likely.
On a cosmetic level it’s also linked to weight gain.
Which ever option you’re picturing the following effects are all likely:
loss of muscle mass
lack of coordination
weaker bones
higher chance of hypothermia or heat exhaustion
fainting
poor circulation
higher chances of disease and infections
longer recovery time and more difficult recovery from disease and infections
A survivor can get to a point where they’re no longer at immediate risk before they’re back to full health. It takes time to recover bone and muscle mass. It takes time for the internal organs to get back to normal. It takes time for enough fat to build up so a person’s body can regulate heat properly.
There’s also a difference between someone being at peak physical fitness and getting back to average. My understanding is that if someone’s survived significant periods of starvation they’re… unlikely to reach peak physical fitness. If this character was an athlete or a super hero or otherwise had a physically demanding profession, they’re likely to notice a difference even when they’re ‘better’.
They could improve with time and practice but they may never get back to their prior ability level.
There’s evidence of epigenetic effects; the children of people who recover from starvation are likely to be shorter then the children of people who have never starved.
The Minnesota Starvation experiment theorised that after a successful recovery there were few long term effects of starvation. There’s some evidence now that this was an optimistic conclusion but it’s difficult to get a clear picture because of the ethics around studying starvation.
For young children starvation results in an adult who is:
physically weaker
less intelligent
more prone to illness
less able to fight off illness
has a shorter life expectancy
is physically smaller
Starvation of children represents a blunting of potential: they will never reach their full strength or intelligence even if they may be stronger/smarter then some individuals. And there is really nothing that can be done to treat that. They needed food over a crucial period and did not receive it. The damage is done and can not currently be treated or healed.
Beatings over a long period of time and forced labour both have a tendency to cause chronic pain in the joints. Shoulders and knees seem particularly common.
There are a lot of possible causes for this sort of chronic pain. Ligament and muscle damage s possible. Beatings with objects can cause bone fragments to uh break away and lodge in soft tissues. Soft tissues around joints can be damaged.
And there are also psychological causes or combinations of both physical damage and psychological causes.
For instance this is something I saw in an account from a survivor of child abuse. The survivor had been punished using standing stress positions and he found as an adult that he got shooting pains in the backs of his legs while stressed at work. With the help of his doctors he found that when he was stressed he leaned forward on to his toes, mimicking part of the stress position he’d been subjected to as a child. This put more strain on his legs and caused the pain.
These kinds of responses can be very difficult to stop.
What I’m trying to illustrate here is that disabling pain is really common in survivors and you don’t necessarily need to know a specific cause for it.
Chronic pain can cause long term problems to do with mobility and performing everyday activities. Most often it means that survivors need to rest more often, they may have less stamina and they might need to do things in ‘odd’/unusual ways in order to comfortably perform the activity.
For instance someone with chronic pain in their shoulders might struggle to hang wet clothes on a line that’s above their heads. So they might get in the habit of lowering the clothes line, attaching the clothes and then raising it by pulling on the cord at waist height. They might have trouble moving their shoulder to put on jackets, so they could use their body weight to ‘flip’ the arm joint to the correct position without involving the muscles of the shoulder.
Someone with knee pain would probably be more particular about the height of chairs in their house. They may stop keeping things in low drawers or shelves.
Consider where your character might have pain, what activities might make it worse and life style adaptions you can work in to your story.
These can actually be a great world building/character detail. Especially because healthy people have a tendency to assume these adaptions are eccentricities rather then necessity, prompting conversation between characters.
There is one part of this scenario that worries me: mutilating the tongue.
Cutting out tongues is one of those things that comes up a lot in fiction and is generally… less survivable then people assume. Tongues are not just for verbal communication: they’re a pretty essential part of how we swallow food and water, not to mention detecting whether said food/water is edible and they contain a lot of blood vessels. There’s a reason things like tongue splitting and tongue piercing don’t tend to show up as traditional body modification practices.
The process of partially removing a tongue is life threatening in and of itself. Victims can drown in their own blood. Inflammation can block the airways causing suffocation. Infection can make breathing, eating or drinking impossible (increasing the chance of death from infection.)
If the victim survives (some definitely did) they’d have trouble eating and drinking for the rest of their lives. This means malnutrition is likely, leading to shorter life expectancies and higher chances of disease (apart from the conditions malnutrition itself causes.)
It also means recovery from starvation would be significantly longer. Which means a longer period when the character’s more at risk from infection and disease as well as the general uh ‘problems’ starvation causes.
I’m not saying you’ve created an unsurvivable scenario. We know from history that some people have gone through stuff like this and survived.
What I’m saying is the survival rate is low. Those survivors (and your character) got lucky.
Keep that in mind when you write this scenario.
In terms of long term recovery I honestly have no idea how a removed tongue is treated, I’m not a medic. I can guess at some lifestyle adaptions though.
Because it makes eating more difficult I think it’s likely a survivors would have smaller meals and more frequent meals rather then large portions that might be cold/unpleasant by the time they’ve finished eating. They’d probably learn to cut their food into smaller pieces and might avoid tougher foods that require more chewing. Their sense of the taste and texture of food would be impaired which might effect their enjoyment of food which could in turn effect their motivation to eat and their recovery.
Overall I think the take away message here is that while most of the physical long term effects of slavery are not immediately life threatening they have a massive effect on long term quality of life.
A lot of survivors of modern slavery come out of similar time frames to this disabled by a combination of chronic pain, joint problems and untreated injury or disease.
One of the recurring themes in Kara’s interviews with slaves is that slavery physically ages people. The combination of extreme distress, physical abuse, overwork, sleep deprivation and malnutrition makes survivors appear much older then they are.
But the reasons why, the injuries and marks of abuse are often not immediately obvious.
 I hope that helps :)

This is the first time in a while that I have felt even vaguely inspired to write a post.  I’m going for it today.
MANIFESTATION
If you are alive in body (or out of body) reading this, you are abundantly manifesting.  All reality is a side-effect of manifestation.  Whatever the state of your perception at this very moment, is what you are manifesting for another version of the Now. This means we are all strong manifestors. It's just a matter of seeing with honest eyes what we've been unconsciously choosing all along, so that we can begin to choose consciously. Happiness, abundance, bliss, love are all choices, that don't require you to feel it in order to create it. Because let's be honest, if you are someone who experiences anxiety, it's pretty difficult to feel anything else, am I right?
You can be right where you are and start to consciously choose a new reality unconditionally. Feeling and belief are not required. But they will come as a result of consciously choosing in every moment of every day.
So... to those who are interested in orchestrating a life change, please know that you are not a microcosm of events happening to you.  You are the universe in form that has the ability to become aware of itself and its abilities. And it goes back to Choice & Thought. (fuck belief and "feel to make it real” LOA teachings; belief is actually a side effect of the thoughts you choose)
Some of us aren’t in a position to feel what we truly desire and this is why I’m here to express that the only thing needed is your Free Will and a Thought connected to the desired outcome.  Thoughts create emotion which inspire the behaviors through which we take action.  You will also need to be self-compassionate, persistent, consistent, and diligent.   I may have to post separately on how to disable old thought patterning in real-time.  But in short, when we notice what doesn’t feel awesome, we disable by not acting from those energetic or emotional thought spaces.  We learn how to get still and process the “static” between our perception and our highest desire(s).
No one is trapped, however, some of us may have some tricky interference in the mind-field brought on by circumstances outside of this lifetime.  I personally had to seek out assistance to get what I would call an “energetic accessory” to remove all unseen interference, karmic, ancestral, etc.  To be honest, it was all stuff that had nothing to do with this life. It just seems like I’m here to resolve the past and remember how to thrive in the Present—like the gift that Now truly is.
If you would like to unconditionally chat about manifestation or play a bit of positivity ping-pong, feel free to reach me at [email protected] I like talking to anyone about positive things. Because that's the reality I am consistently choosing to create.
tdlr:. Thru free will of choice, changing the conscious and subconscious programming within the mind changes your emotional experiences and creates the behaviors that match what you desire.
To get in control of your manifestation power choose your thoughts. Ignore “belief”.  The thoughts you choose repeatedly will become your belief and snowball into the connection to what is desired.
Bonus:. Physical/energetic grounding is everything. Electrons (negative charge) transmute the static (positive charge) energy that's between you and the physical manifestation of your desires. The only thing between you and what you want is the energy of what doesn't need to be there.

Why Not Spend Your Lock-Down with Dr. Hannibal Lecter?
By Shannon L. Christie
You are cordially invited to spend your lock-down, dining in the company of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Menu
Reception
Dr. Hannibal Lecter is one of thee most iconic fictional literary villains, created in the 20th Century; Hollywood films has cemented his iconic status and his transformation into the 21st Century, via network television, has been carefully crafted under the watchful eye of executive producer, Martha De Laurentiis.
Hannibal Lecter sprang from the mind of novelist Thomas Harris; Lecter has been in our lives for almost 40 years; introduced with the publication of Red Dragon in October 1981; he has never left our consciousness for too long.
So where does one start?
Do you read the 4 novels, watch the 5 movies or the TV Series?
Do I start at the beginning with Harris's novel, Red Dragon?
There are several ways to feast upon Hannibal Lecter: read Harris' novels first: watch the movies and then dine on the TV Series; read the novels, watch the corresponding movies and then the TV Series; watch the TV Series and then go back, watch the movies and read the novels. Whatever way you decide, you will not be disappointed at the end of your feast!
The following menu outline would be my suggestion for how to feast upon the sumptuous offerings of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Amuse-bouche
In this course we are served small bit-sized morsels of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Red Dragon: Thomas Harris, 1981
Will Graham, a former FBI Special Agent with an instinct for profiling, is sucked back into consulting for the FBI on their latest serial murder case; involving the Tooth Fairy. Will's been living a quiet life in Florida with his wife and son, when his former boss, Jack Crawford visits, enticing Graham back into the game. In order to get that old scent back; Graham needs to get into the mindset of a killer, so he visits Dr. Hannibal Lecter at The Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where Lecter is serving 9 consecutive life terms for murder. Graham was the FBI Agent who finally caught Hannibal and it almost cost him his life and sanity.
Interesting Fact: Harris attended portions of Ted Bundy's trial for the Chi Omega Murders in Florida. The Prosecutors in the Bundy trial used bite marks left on one of his victims as evidence. Dolarhyde left bite marks on Mrs. Leeds, which allowed forensics to create dental impressions, creating a sample of Dolarhyde's teeth.
Manhunter: Directed by Michael Mann, 1986
Manhunter was written and directed by Michael Mann; starring William Petersen (Will Graham), Dennis Farina (Jack Crawford), Tom Noonan (Francis Dollarhyde, film spelling/Red Dragon/Tooth Fairy), Joan Allen (Reba McClane) Brian Cox (Hannibal Lecktor, film spelling).
Manhunter is now considered a cult classic; at the time of it's original release it fared poorly at the box office and met with mixed reviews. It's cult status may be partially due to the continuing saga of Hannibal Lecter and William Petersen's success in CSI. The film touches on many of the important elements of the novel and also misses on quite a few. What is Dolarhyde's motive? The movie is dated with a definite 80's Michael Mann vibe; in spite of that it is definitely worth a watch for Noonan's performance.
Interesting Fact: Film Producer Dino De Laurentiis purchased the movie rights to the novel Red Dragon in 1983.
Red Dragon: Directed by Brett Ratner, 2002
This is where I'll skip ahead and talk about Manhunter's remake, Red Dragon. You can either choose to watch Red Dragon here or move it to after Hannibal to watch in order of release – entirely up to you.
Dino De Laurentiis passed on the movie rights to The Silence of the Lamb, due to the poor showing of Manhunter at the box office. So when The Silence of the Lambs was critically acclaimed by the critics; a huge box office success; winning the top 5 categories at the 1992 Oscars; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay – Dino wanted another serving of Hannibal Lecter.
When Harris released his third Lecter novel, simply titled Hannibal, Dino De Laurentiis picked up the rights and saw this as an opportunity to remake Manhunter, this time using the book title, Red Dragon, especially considering the success of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. In fact, Red Dragon was released in theatres a year after Hannibal.
Lecter's role was beefed up with a few added scenes; Lecter enjoying the symphony with the exception of the violinist; experiencing one of Lecter's sinfully delicious dinner parties of the music council with the violinist as the main course; seeing the tete-a-tete played out between Lecter and Graham (Edward Norton) that nearly cost them both their lives.
Dolarhyde's (Ralph Fiennes) abusive childhood is explored, the motivation for his heinous crimes against families. We see more of the relationship between Dolarhyde and Reba (Emily Watson) and Dolarhyde's struggle to keep the monster at bay. Ted Tally wrote the screenplay (he wrote The Silence of the Lambs screenplay and passed on the Hannibal screenplay); he has a great sense of what is essential to the narration of a well conceived movie, without loosing too much of the original story told by Thomas Harris.
I am partial to Red Dragon over Manhunter for that reason; I love Ralph Feinnes portrayal of Dolarhyde; he's creepy without being overtly creepy like Noonan is in Manhunter. Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lecter beautifully as he always does. There are a few flaws in this version though, namely Edward Norton's portrayal of Will Graham. I love Norton – I just think he was wrong for the part and the bleached blonde hair drove me mad. I also have issue with Harvey Keitel as Jack Crawford, I just didn't get an FBI Special Agent in charge of the Behavioral Science Unit vibe from him. Keitel is the guy you bring in to rough up your suspect. On the plus side, the crime scenes are more graphic than in Manhunter, which I feel is essential to understanding the severity of the need to capture this fiend, because now he has a taste for it and he will not stop!
Interesting Fact: Dino De Laurentiis had to make a deal with MGM, so the shot of The Baltimore State Hospital building used in The Silence of the Lambs, could be used in Red Dragon, as the building had been demolished.
Dinner
Appetizer
In this course we are treated to petite, rich tasty morsels of Hannibal Lecter,
both of the hot and cold variety.
The Silence of the Lambs: Thomas Harris, 1988
The follow up novel to Red Dragon, Harris' third novel, Lecter was not a character Harris intended to use; he just showed up one day as Harris wrote. The Silence of the Lambs was the story of a young female FBI agent in training; female agents were a relatively new concept at Quantico. J. Edgar Hoover had died in 1972 and the FBI slowly started to drag itself into the modern age and out of the Mafia/Prohibition dark ages that it was founded on. Harris' story of Clarice Starling was an exploration of an agent in training along with a manhunt, headed by Jack Crawford, for a serial killer, only known as “Buffalo Bill”; who abducted girls, held them hostage for a few days; shot them in the heads, dumped their bodies in rivers; having partially skinned them post mortem. The FBI is stumped, they have no motive, no pattern and no connections between the victims. What should they do? Crawford sends Clarice Starling, an agent in training to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
The Silence of the Lambs: Directed by Jonathan Demme, 1991
As I previously mentioned, Dino de Laurentiis passed on acquiring the movie rights for The Silence of the Lambs; the rights ended up in the hands of Demme and Orion Films, without a fee paid to De Laurentiis. The screenplay was written by Ted Tally, who managed to highlight all the important aspects of the novel, creating a balanced story. The movie starred Jodie Foster (Clarice Starling), Glenn Scott (Jack Crawford), Anthony Heald (Dr, Frederick Chilton), Ted Levine (Jame Gumb/Buffalo Bill) and Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter),
Interesting Fact: Anthony Hopkins on screen performance of Hannibal Lecter, consisting of only sixteen minutes earned him an Oscar for Best Actor in 1992.
Entree
This course is a hearty and meaty dish of Hannibal Lecter, served with delicate red sauce.
Hannibal: Thomas Harris, 1999
Would Harris write another Lecter novel? As we eagerly waited to see – making us wait 10 long years, Harris' reward was Hannibal; a story centred around Dr. Hannibal Lecter. I think many people weren't prepared for the monster to be uncaged. It was bloodier and gorier than the previous two films and quite sadistic. Manhunter and The Silence of the Lambs were considered psychological thrillers with a dollop of horror. Hannibal was a full on horror novel with a dollop of psychological thriller. Dr. Hannibal Lecter was free of his cage, just in-time for the new millennium and some readers were not happy.
When the novel, Hannibal, was released, many critics and readers were appalled by the goriness of it (we are talking about a man who kills people and eats them). I guess once the layers of the onion were peeled away; culture, music, art, culinary skills, courteousness – they were horrified by the monster at the centre – that was the point. Serial killers show society a veneer of acceptable personality traits; they keep the monster hidden away, until he breaks through and comes out to play. In that sense, the novel Hannibal, is spot on. He's your neighbour, your friend, your husband, your father, your brother and sometimes your son (The majority of serial killers are male, sorry guys). He wears a symbolic mask in public, to prevent you from guessing how sick and perverted he truly is.
Harris' novel, Hannibal, was the perfect GOTCHA moment! Harris had led us into a false sense of security; either intentionally or unintentionally, with Lecter's intro in Red Dragon; sure he tells Francis Dolarhyde to kill Graham's family – In The Silence of the Lamb; Lecter is so helpful trying to advance Clarice Starling's career; sure he kills several people while escaping from custody; we'll just chalk that up to acceptable carnage.
We start to rationalize that Lecter can't be all bad; he must have some redeeming qualities: he's a man of sophisticated tastes; he's knowledgeable; an incredible chef; a great musician and artist. We don't even mind knowing that he dined on Dr. Chilton, upon his escape; possibly thinking Chilton had it coming.
Harris let us peek briefly behind the curtain in Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs and perhaps Harris was dismayed to learn that upon the popularity of Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal Lecter; he'd become a pop culture icon and somewhat of a hero. Hannibal shattered that illusion.
We find Clarice Starling, 10 years later, working as an FBI Special Agent, in a stagnate career. She can't advance; being blocked by Paul Krendler.
Hannibal has been living in Florence as the curator of the Palazzo Capponi as Dr. Norman Fell (the real Dr. Fell disappeared under mysterious circumstances). Florence, Italy, the ideal spot for Lecter, a true Renaissance man. We discover there has been a string of murders by the fiend, know as Il Mostro.
Meanwhile, Mason Verger, Lecter's 4th victim, is on the hunt for Dr. Lecter, who left Mason disfigured, although technically by Mason's own hand. Verger has offered a $3,000,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Interesting Fact: Thomas Harris attended the trial of The Monster of Florence, Pietro Pacciani, in 1994, incorporating some of the aspects of the crimes into his Hannibal novel and hinting that Hannibal himself was Il Mostro (The Monster of Florence).
Hannibal: Directed by Ridley Scott, 2001
If some readers were unhappy with the novel, there were those unhappy about the production of a movie in the same vain. Ted Tally didn't want to write the screenplay, Foster didn't want to reprise her role as Starling and Demme wasn't interested in directing. The consensus was it was too graphic and gory and they wanted no part of it; a complete turnaround; they initially were chomping at the bit to be involved in the follow-up to The Silence of the Lambs.
Interesting Fact: Dino De Laurentiis was under the impression that given a good story even he could play Clarice Starling.
The extra dinner course you never needed; you were already full.
Hannibal Rising: Thomas Harris, 2006
From all accounts that I've read, Harris was gently coerced into writing Hannibal Rising. Dino De Laurentiis wanted an origin story to turn into a film and he'd do it with or without Harris. Harris eventually caved and produced the fourth Lecter novel, Hannibal Rising.
Harris uses the hardships of WWII as the starting backdrop for the development of young Lecter's transformation into “Hannibal the Cannibal”. This is perhaps a story that never needed to be told. We were given glimpses in the novel Hannibal that never made it into the movie and perhaps that was a mistake; not seeing the humanity in Hannibal before events unfolded to create a monster and he is a monster, however refined his tastes are. It would have made a good contrast to the harshness of Lecter's grotesque and sadistic actions in Hannibal; that's where a good screenplay, might have made a difference. Francis Dolarhyde, Jame Gumb and Hannibal Lecter weren't born evil, they were shaped and moulded by their harsh experiences as young, innocent, impressionable children. Monsters aren't born, they are made – the moral of the stories. The difference being Hannibal always took responsibility for his actions, never placing the blame at someone else’s feet.
Hannibal Rising: Directed by Peter Webber, 2007
This time Harris would be involved, writing the screenplay for the Hannibal Rising movie. While I enjoyed Gaspard Ulliel as a young Hannibal, I felt that the story was unnecessary.
And just when you thought that was all and Hannibal Lecter's story had been narrated from beginning to end; Lecter was resurrected in 2013 for Bryan Fuller's TV Series, titled Hannibal, for three seasons on NBC.
Dessert
A delicate balance of psychiatry, culinary skills, food porn, relationships, sex, beauty, horror
and murder tableaus, like the layers of a sinful Double Chocolate Torte.
Hannibal TV Series: Developed by Bryan Fuller, 2013-2015
I know what you're going to say; there's no way I'm watching a Hannibal TV show without Hopkins on NBC! Whether your a Cox fan or a Hopkins fan; they both played the part in their own style and both performances are top notch. Hopkins had a little more to sink his teeth into with The Silence of the Lambs; as the screen time was slightly longer than in Manhunter.
I was stubborn too! I didn't watch Hannibal during the originally airing for season one or two. I remember catching a glimpse of an episode as I was on my way out to photograph a band; I was a live music photographer for around three years, so many of my Friday nights were spent in Toronto. It was the episode with the horse and the coffin-birth, which ultimately left an impression. So in January 2015 I binge watched season one and two (26 episodes) in only two days; I couldn't stop watching!
There's been a string of missing girls attributed to one person, known as “The Minnesota Shrike” and the FBI are struggling for leads. Upon the eighth girls disappearance, Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) walks into Will Graham's (Hugh Dancy) classroom to request his help. Graham has the unique ability to empathize with narcissits and sociopaths and as he states, it has less to do with a personality disorder and more to do with an active imagination. Dr. Bloom expresses her concerns to Jack Crawford about using Will Graham for his special gifts and recommends keeping an eye on him; suggesting a colleague of hers, Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Bryan Fuller's adaption uses Red Dragon as the main source material, with additional material from Hannibal and Hannibal Rising; expanding characters stories and switching some genders to give it a less male dominated cast. Characters like Margot Verger, who were left out of the Hannibal movie are slotted back in to give the Mason Verger story more substance. Cordell, Verger's valet and cook, is far cheekier in the TV series. Dr. Alan Bloom is transformed into Dr. Alana Bloom and Freddy Lounds, once played by the amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman becomes Freddie Lounds played by Lara Jean Chorostecki, who plays her less sleazy and yet still despicable.
Interesting Fact: Bryan Fuller incorporated some of the forward written by Harris in Red Dragon about his experience writing the novel.
Whipped Fresh Creme & a Cherry On-top!
Hannibal Fan Fiction
Season 3 of Hannibal ends on a cliff hanger and unfortunately NBC cancelled the show without a resolution. Not to worry, there is a buffet of Hannibal Fan Fiction out there for you to sink your teeth into. Hannibal fan fiction spans the spectrum of General Audience to NC-17 to pornographic; there is something to suit everyone's taste. If you don't find anything pleasing; you can always write your own fan fiction!
Interesting Fact: Some of the cast members have read Hannibal fan fiction.
Hannibal Fan Art
The amazing thing about the Hannibal fandom, whether you're old school or new school; there is incredible artwork to explore created by incredibly talented artists.
Interesting Fact: Bryan Fuller and the De Laurentiis Company are not dicks about copyright infringement, when it comes to fan art and fan fiction.
Hannibal Conventions
Red Dragon Con by Starfury: An all Hannibal Con in London, England.
Fannibal Fest: An all Hannibal Con with location tours in Toronto, Canada.
Sofa-Con by Fannibal Fest: Due to the lock-down situation around the world because of Covid-19 all conventions were cancelled in 2020. Fannibal Fest set of some Zoom meetings with guests that starred or worked on Hannibal.
There are several Hannibal fandom groups all over different parts of the world; who meat-up to dine and discuss their favourite topic, Hannibal. I am part of a GTA Fannibal group that centres around Toronto, Canada and we’ve met several times.
So, as we finish our dining experience with Dr. Hannibal Lecter; we'll eagerly anticipate another invitation to Lecter's dinner table, as a guest or if you're unspeakably rude, perhaps you'll be the main course; either way I'll meet or eat you there!

IT'S OUR 2ND ANNIVERSARY! 🎉🥳🥂
@Authors' Note: This is Leanne and Hyeri's story. Please bear with us as we try to reminisce over the past years and celebrate where we are now as writers, as friends, and most especially, as individuals who have grown a lot and changed a lot through the years.
Warnings: Contains a semi-reveal of what we actually look like in real life lol so if you’re interested, keep reading down lol.
We started this blog in 2017. We deactivated in 2018, just weeks before what was supposed to be our first anniversary. We stayed silent throughout the rest of 2018 and 2019, but we picked up where we left off this 2020. Despite the messy history of this blog, though, and the changes in our lives, we are extremely happy that we did come back. And the reason why we came back? Well, it’s pretty simple.
The same love for SEVENTEEN, which made us start this blog, brought us back again.
Tumblr media
We’re not lying when we tell you that this blog was what made us closer and what our friendship grow deeper.
Back then, we were just classmates who found common interests in each other (history, writing novels, analyzing politics, and being one of the ‘Big 3′ in our class lol) but didn’t know how to bond over these interests. But when we both started sharing a room in a dormitory close to our university in 2017, things changed. And things changed because we both found SEVENTEEN.
LEANNE: I wasn’t really a K-pop fan during that time. But I remember sitting beside Hyeri at our study area, watching her as she watched DWC and thinking to myself, “Maybe this could be it. Maybe this could be the ‘thing’ that we could bond over and could make our friendship grow. And so I leaned over and asked, “Oooh, which group is that?” What followed then was a night where I became a convert, and SVT became a part of me forever.
After that night, we found ourselves always talking about them because they became the thread that made us close. And while bonding over SVT, we started to become more open about our lives and about ourselves in terms of personalities. We didn’t know why but we just clicked. Before we started becoming really close, we had different sets of friends. But then, we just knew that our friendship was different because we truly understand each other.
HYERI: I wasn't a Kpop stan before either. Like if my high school me knew I'd become like this, she'll cringe in embarrassment. But it happened. A friend recommended me to watch React to the K because I'm a huge classical music nut, and I discovered Seventeen there. I seriously can't remember that exact moment when Leanne asked, but I do remember that one time when I showed her the dance practice for Aju Nice. It was one of the first things I showed to her, and then without knowing, we've already watched a lot of Seventeen videos.
Whenever I look back at that time, I just remember how happy we were even though it wasn't really a good moment in our lives. There were a lot of stress and problems, and everything just seemed to spiral down from there. But I just feel a warm feeling in my chest whenever July and August comes, I smell the rain, and remember how many nights we spent binging on Seventeen, talking inside the nearby 7/11 until 1am, knowing that classes were cancelled the next day because of the weather. It was truly a magical moment for me because I never had a friend like Leanne, like sometimes we just have the same thought patterns, and we bonded over Seventeen so much. We would just talk endlessly about them, brainstorming ideas for fics and so on to the point that we only stopped because the 5AM alarm went off lmao Those times were just absolutely incredible.
LEANNE: We also have kind of the same goal back then: to have a platform where we could practice writing. Hyeri suggested that we try creating a blog for fanfiction. I agreed because I truly wanted to try and I was so obsessed with Choi Seungcheol back then. So we planned our first fics, who posts first, and we created it. Just like that. On August 12, 2017, we made our first post.
Our first name was “diabolically-diamondiferous”. We wanted something different (and we now admit that we did go overboard with the bing different thing lol) and so we agreed that this would be our URL. We chose it because of the concept that there is a duality in this blog that readers should look forward to, a dynamic that they would only see here, I guess? That was the goal. That was how it all started.
HYERI: I was a Wonwoo stan back then. I had already written Love is A Fallacy and a bit of 30 Nights before we even created the blog, and I wanted an avenue where I can post it. I admit I myself can't think of a better url than "diabolically-diamondiferous", so I just went with it.
Honestly, the blog has helped me a lot with writing. I used to write anime fanfictions and original stories, and I've already established my style back then. This blog has really helped me a lot with refining my writing style and experimenting with new ideas and ways to tell a story, as well as being able to write quickly. I do think I've improved with my dialogues and the way I pace my stories, and make them feel organic. And with that, I've never realized I've already written a lot, until I arranged the masterlist recently.
What began with a few stories turned into hundreds as we started pouring our hearts into this blog. And we would be lying if we told you that it was pressure-free.
LEANNE: During this time, my responsibilities at uni, family and other personal matters made me unable to focus on the blog a lot. I really feel sorry for Hyeri during this time because she was the one who was more consistent with posting her stories. I joke every now and then these days whenever she couldn’t write that it’s okay, you once had too much weight and now I’ll carry my share and more, too, if it gets hard for you. Even though I was busy with other things, however, Hyeri really pulled through and made this blog come alive. And as a friend, she really helped me get through my darkest moments. This blog, too, became my crutch. Whenever my heart got broken, I would write here. I would try to find my voice (and at that time, I couldn’t find myself, either. Just ask Hyeri why, lol.) in writing. I was experimenting what voice I had while writing and what genre fits me.
HYERI: Following Leanne's, I guess after our trip to Korea, things became way harder. I had a lot of low points back then as well: losing my scholarship and just so much responsibility in life and at school. I did carry much of the weight of the blog after that semester, and I'm surprised how I managed to do that. I kept on badgering Leanne to finish some requests, but she really had a lot going on as well. Not to mention our plans to join an exchange program to Korea which was another hell we signed up for. It was extra difficult because our department doesn't want us to leave, thinking we're just running away from the strict (and often unfair) professors (ironic when our major is International Relations).Seventeen and this blog was the only way we could bond together and have fun and just forget about everything. I could remember sending each other fake messages from Seventeen just to cheer the other up when things get depressing, or imagining what it would feel like to be an idol and whatnot. It sounds silly now, but that was the only way we could cope with how intense and exhausting our lives were. It was the only thing that kept the constant dread in our nerves from taking over.
What began as an experimental way to boost creativity became something like a career, and steering our motivation, was of course, the boys. Our boys. The amazing people that we write about and that we imagine about. They made us happy during the times when there was nothing to be happy about. They made us take risks that brought out the braveness we didn’t know we had in us, and they made us feel hopeful about the future.
However, we hit a hurdle we couldn’t bring ourselves back from hurdle after hurdle during our second semester as juniors in college.
LEANNE: Second semester of junior year in college was really hard for me. The bottom line of it all was the manipulative relationship that I was in with my s/o back then, but a lot of things piled up as well: school responsibilities (I was handling three classes at one point as a professor’s assistant and then ran for a student government position I didn’t really want but felt obliged to). All the while this was happening, I was really feeling myself slip away. I was suffering from depression but I had a lot of things going on around me that I could not just drop because people were depending on me. The only way I thought I would be able to not give up is by going somewhere else to finish my studies. Yes, the environment got that toxic. I really needed to get away. Around this time, I wasn’t active on the blog anymore. Right after elections, I lost my motivation to do anything. I would sometimes pitch in to help Hyeri with some requests, but it took way more effort than I thought it would.
Hyeri and I decided that we needed to take the risk of applying for the South Korean exchange program, which was one of the best that our uni had to offer. We figured that since our grades were okay, it would be easy. Boy were we wrong.
HYERI: The Coldest Human, The Warmest Robot was the last fic I've posted in the blog before the hiatus. I couldn't do it anymore. There were so many problems and issues with the exchange program that I could no longer handle the blog alone. Leanne had withdrawn too, considering how she has her own things to face as well. It was a really difficult time. After being rejected a visa, I just can't think of writing, or even Seventeen anymore. Just their presence seemed to only remind me that I had been rejected after months and months of preparation. Their songs only reminded me of our disappointments. It was awful and I knew I can't face them at that time. I found myself in Taiwan. Alone. Leanne had stayed and it was depressing. I had to move on despite that, but it felt like an empty success.
We planned to become a part of an exchange program in South Korea, but it didn’t pull through at the last minute. We had staked all our bets, and we lost motivation in a lot of things. One of those things was this blog. We just knew that we had to let it go during 2018, because it was impossible to maintain it when you don’t feel inspired about life anymore.
Right after going back home for winter vacation, I remember I was angry crying because I knew Leanne can't do anything because of her circumstances, even if she wanted to go to Taiwan so much.
LEANNE: I was miserable during first semester as a senior because everything did not go as planned. I was really losing the resolve to keep going on because nothing had gone the way I had planned it to be. I think the only silver lining during 2018 was that my parents and friends finally stepped in to protect me from the person who had been harming me emotionally and therefore affecting my self-esteem and resolve. We also went to Macau, where I really healed a lot as well while teaching music with close friends from church. But beyond that, I could see no other way to get through the last semester except to follow Hyeri and go to Taiwan. It wasn’t just her friendship that I was missing; it was also about that goal I had in my mind: to find peace and quiet away from everything that had hurt me and drained me.
We didn’t have any high hopes about what lay ahead, but the biggest plot twist came.
LEANNE: By some miracle, I managed to convince my parents that I was well enough to go to Taiwan and that I would be safer there. It all happened so fast. February I was still crying, standing at the train tracks, telling our other friend that I wanted to just end it. But then March came and my visa got approved on a Friday. Three days later, just packing whatever I had with me in my apartment, I left for Taiwan.
It was a miracle Hyeri and I still talk about a lot. We started to heal from everything that we had gone through. We started to re-explore our friendship and in the end, after so much drama and after so much challenges, we finally concluded that this friendship of ours was really something that we wanted to keep forever. We grew a lot through the years.
HYERI: Who would've thought that with a lot of begging and pleading and praying, Leanne was finally able to go to Taiwan. I was so happy. It was one of the happiest memories of my life so far. Being in Taiwan, away from the world, from the responsibilities back at home, it was such a liberating time.It was also the exact period which we started to heal from past disappointments. Seventeen no longer gave me the pain I used to feel, and to this day, You Made My Day---the album which was released before everything happened, and reminded me a lot of what had transpired---is one of my favourite Seventeen albums.
But here we are now, in 2020. It was really because of Hit the Road that we decided to come back. We agreed to start writing again come June 2020. We started doing what we loved again.
HYERI: We had fully healed from everything and we're fully ready to come back to writing about our precious boys! I am so happy to be able to finally celebrate the actual anniversary for this blog!
LEANNE: And now, here we are, celebrating our anniversary! The first one we really had! This is all impromptu editing but we really wanted to make it special.

Highlights Throughout the Years:
💎 Love is A Fallacy (Lawyer!Wonwoo)
The first ever fic I've written for SVT. I remember I wrote this while I was at the dorm on my bed, it was a miraculously stress-free night. The song I kept on playing was "20" and I could imagine it being the OST if this was a kdrama 😂 This was at a time when Wonwoo was still my bias.
💎Adagio Cantabile (College Student!Jihoon)
A fic I first wrote after Jihoon became my bias. I could still remember, I was so inspired by a fic titled Customer Satisfaction, that I wrote this one. Plus I'm really into Classical Music, that I could just write one whole fic about it. I'm still amazed how we were able to write fanfiction even though we were swamped with school work, and I mean, SWAMPED, like a lot of exams, graded recitation, things to memorize, super long essays, but we still managed to write. 😂
💎Saffron (Victorian AU DK)
This was written shortly after Leanne and I went back from Korea. I was so blissfully happy back then. I think I've spent a night or two writing this. This was heavily inspired by the game "Chocolatier" which I was playing days before I've started writing 😂 I really love writing for DK, he's such a positively innocent character who was so endearing.
💎The Coldest Human; Warmest Robot (Android!Jihoon)
This was probably the last one shot I've posted before the hiatus in 2018. I remember finishing it in my hometown when we went there for summer vacation. It was a really bad time ngl I lost my scholarship and was supposed to go to an exchange program to South Korea with Leanne. Back I didn't know if I could support that dream financially.
💎The Most Convenient Escape (Soulmate!Jihoon)
This was the first fic I've written after the hiatus. Truthfully, over 2018-2019, I lost my love for SVT. It was painful to be reminded of the fact that we weren't able to go to Korea, so I avoided them while I was in Taiwan. But I came back around this year and started to write this one. It's heavily inspired by the book "Voices of the Past" which is a compilation of American newspaper articles over the years, and anime reviews which talked about Deconstructing a genre (i.e., Madoka Magica and Evangelion). Right now I really do want to finish this series.

Highlights Throughout the Years
💎The Return of Superman Series
My first work, TROS Seungcheol, was the first fic in the entire blog that I was truly proud of. All my other works were too rushed, too experimental for my own taste even, and just doesn’t look like what I, Leanne, if you personally know me, would write about. I strongly believe that there is a unique voice in each story, a voice that belongs only to its writer, and back then, I was still trying to find that voice. The Return of Superman was my breakthrough in writing. I suddenly found an AU that I truly loved to write about, and, most importantly, my voice in writing.
💎After-Party, Only Us, and Afterglow | Yoon Jeonghan
This is the spin-off series that came from Yoon Jeonghan’s The Return of Superman. I started to become more comfortable in my style of writing as I wrote these. You will notice a change of style after the first part, “After-Party”. My writing style has matured, and I really congratulate myself a lot for that. It took me years and tons of experiences to get that flavor I had always wanted in my works! Haha.
💎The And Series
This is another one of those imagines that really brought out the hopeless romantic inside me, and for that, I am proud of it. It’s still mostly in the works, but I  am really happy about how it’s turning out.
💎Through the Seasons Series
Ah, this is my pet project. All my heart is poured into this one. This is the first series that I truly explored the beauty of love in realistic settings. My writing process here is done by looking at real couples LOL and also tapping into beautiful memories of mine about love and about life and all the drama that comes along. I’m really glad that a lot of our new readers liked the first one that came out!

Our story-time ends here.
All in all, we just want to say thank you. Thank you for everything. For being with us through this crazy ride of a blog, truly, sincerely, thank you. From our followers since the beginning, to the new ones that we are finding joy in communicating with now, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts!
LET’S MAKE MORE MEMORIES TOGETHER!

I said I would show you my “how” and here it is.
This is my guide to conquer depression with practical advice you can use right now.
Just make sure you commit to making this change, because none of this will help without your own time and effort.
And remember, if someone as broken as I was can comeback from this, there’s no doubt you can too.

You know what’s more depressing than actually being depressed?
Doing a Google search on how to beat depression.
(I know that’s ironic if you got here through Google but hear me out anyway.)
Back when I was dealing with this, and even now when I compare my tips with others, I realized that most people who gave advice were victims who told how to live with the problem. They didn’t have solutions that came from actually solving it.
It was like an unemployed person telling you how to survive without a paycheck instead of showing you how to get a job.
The first page of Google showed me posts telling me to be patient so my situation might change. They told me that I should go watch a heartwarming movie. Or maybe drink tea every morning to bring me peace.
Are you serious?
You’re telling someone who feels lower than the dirt underneath your fingernails that tea is somehow gonna help?
It was pathetic. You could see the struggle laced all throughout their words.
Even when I was in that place, I knew better than to listen to those still stuck where I was trying to leave.
So remember that if the person you’re listening to still sounds broken, they haven’t conquered anything yet.
But keeping that in mind, you should also avoid another group. That group is the tough love crew—with an emphasis on the tough part.
They’ve either…
A) Never faced what you’re dealing with. So they’ll treat you like less of a person because they can’t show understanding.
Or…
B) They have been through this, but they overcompensate for their former weakness by giving bogus “man up” advice.
It’s people like that who keep you from starting meaningful discussions about what’s going on.
The good news is, you have one person here who’s dealt with your problem and found real solutions—not just gimmicks to treat symptoms. So follow this guide and only take additional advice from people who have done what you want to do. Otherwise, you’ll set yourself up for failure.
Master the Reframe
You can often trace depression back to the thoughts you decide to dwell on. If you focus on your failures for example, you’ll view life through a darker lens than someone who focuses on the good.
It’s always possible to find good in any situation, whether controllable or uncontrollable. And reframing is how you do that.
So what is reframing? It’s simply changing your view of a situation to the most positive outlook.
We can look at the classic glass-half-full example to see reframing in action. The person who reframes will see the glass as being half full, whereas a person who doesn’t will see the glass as half empty.
Tumblr media
All you’re doing is taking your circumstances and looking at them from a better angle.
If you’re dealing with a controllable problem, it’s best to use your reframe as a starting point for action. And if you have an uncontrollable problem, you look for learning points, opportunities, and the overall big picture.
So here’s a different example: Let’s say you lose your job.
You can do like most people and worry about your money. You can hold a grudge against your boss. Or you might complain that it wasn’t fair and refuse to search for work.
But all of those are terrible perspectives. Reframe them instead:
You can’t control the fact that they let you go, but you can ask the company why it happened.
You can use the loss as motivation to change your work ethic.
And you can view it as more time to spend with your family now while forming a list of potential interviews for later.
Reframing alone won’t solve your problems, but it will keep you from dwelling on things outside your control.
Just make sure you base your reframe in reality. Don’t act like you’ve risen above the job you had after you’ve lost it.
You may very well have a better opportunity out there. But there’s no need to build a false ego. If you take a loss, learn from it and move on. No one is above anything.
When you base your reframe on a false truth, all you’re doing is deluding yourself. And doing that will cause more issues than the original problem did.
But anyway, that’s reframing in a nutshell. It’s easy to understand yet tough to master.
So if you’re new to this, it’s a good idea to start small with the daily problems in life. Those will prepare you for the harder challenges you face later on.
Remember that there is always a bright spot in any problem, but you have to find it first.
Creativity really is one of the pillars of a strong mindset. So make sure you always see the big picture.

Thoughts on a Page
Many people who deal with depression live inside their heads—they think much more than the average person. And if you think that much, you need to read and write.
I’ll focus on writing in this section.
Writing is just putting thoughts on a page. It’s taking your train of thought and organizing it to make sense. And it’s the organization part of writing that’s so therapeutic.
That’s because many of us don’t notice the quality of our thoughts until they’re staring us in the face. And when we do see them, we’re surprised by what they say.
That’s the biggest reason why I recommend you write on a consistent basis. You don’t have to publish anything—that’s not the point here. The point is to get your thoughts in front of you so you can analyze them.
Now the best tool for this is, you guessed it, a journal. And no, not one where you talk about how cute your crush is. You need to be very specific in how you use this to get results.
The first thing to do is write down all of what you’re thinking. You have to dump everything out your brain before you piece it back together.
This journal will be for your eyes only. So feel free to write about anything here.
Write down all the thoughts that dominate your mind no matter how dark they may be. Do that until you can’t think of anything else and then take a step away.
After doing that, you’ll feel relief—like you threw off a heavy burden.
Wait a few minutes and then come back to look at it all. When you see your thoughts in front of you later, you’ll realize that many of them were irrational, and you’ll wonder how you let them float around in your head for so long.
Everything else you wrote will have an underlying theme to it. You may be dealing with self-esteem issues, thoughts of inferiority, or a general disappointment that you allow to hold you back.
Once you find that theme in your words, trace it to a problem that’s either controllable or uncontrollable.
After that, reframe your perspective and create an action plan.
This whole process will force you to organize your thoughts and control your thinking patterns. But make sure you write all this by hand to get the best results.
For an idea of how this would work, let’s take a look at my story to see how I would use this strategy:
First, I would write about my situation like I did in Part 1.
Then I would walk away and come back to the journal later. After coming back, I would scratch out anything crazy like self-harm or suicide. Then I would see my underlying theme—failure to meet expectations.
From this point, I would reframe my problems and make a plan to work with what I had.
Then I would write down whatever I chose in the end. And that would leave me with a before and after picture of where I was at. I could then come back to my journal if I ever struggled with the same issue again.
This brain dump process is one of the best tools to evaluate your thoughts. I’ve used it plenty in my own journal but now the process is automatic. I just do it my head.
But until you get to that point, take note of this process and apply it to whatever you’re going through.
I’ve put all the steps below:
Write your dominating thoughts
Step away for a while
Come back and analyze what you wrote
Cross out irrational thoughts
Find the theme
Determine the problem
Reframe the problem
Write your action plan
The Fundamentals
Look at any great NBA player and you’ll see that they all have one thing in common: they’ve mastered the fundamentals.
Sure, some of them have insane physical gifts, but for every great player with a physical advantage, there’s a hundred athletic freaks who didn’t make the cut.
Guys like Jordan, Magic, and Kobe all performed moves that made people’s mouths drop. But when you look closely, you’ll see that those moves are only additions to basic parts of the game.
Those guys would have never been the players they were by building on what looked cool or felt right. They built upon the right moves no matter how old, boring, or tedious they were.
And building your mindset works the same way. You have to build on fundamental truths, no matter how harsh they may be.
One of the hardest pills to swallow is that the world isn’t obligated to care about your loneliness. The world isn’t obligated to care for your feelings. And it’s not obligated to care for how special you think you are.
You are responsible for your emotional state.
Now I know that’s tough to hear, especially if you’ve never had to humble yourself like this before. But once you learn to care for your own emotional needs, you can move on to what the world always cares about—value.
It doesn’t matter what failures you have, how much money you make, or even what you look like. The world always cares about what you’re willing and able to give.
I know I didn’t understand that during my rough years, and you may not understand it now, but it’s true. So instead of always searching for what you can get, find ways you can give to others instead. And guess what will happen when you do?
People will want to be around you. Money won’t be a problem. A stranger will see that some people do care.
Stop worrying about what you want, and focus on what others need. Become someone who willingly gives to others and your own needs will be more than taken care of.

The Power of Words
Remember how I said you should read and write? Well now we’re at the reading part.
Reading has been so valuable to me that I feel bad for people who don’t do it—they make life harder than it needs to be. I wouldn’t know to do 50 percent of my daily actions without reading about it somewhere. I can only imagine what those people have to work with.
They don’t understand that words are powerful. That they’re life changing.
Our schools overdo it sometimes with the whole “knowledge is power” thing, but for good reason. Almost every oppressive government in history made sure to destroy one thing—books.
My point is, if you’re depressed and you aren’t reading, you don’t stand a chance.
Back when I fought depression, I felt completely alone. I thought no one could relate to me. And looking at all the people around me then, I had good reason to think so. All I could see were people laughing with their friends while I was miserable.
I had to find help from elsewhere and that’s why I started reading. I read so much back then that I kept a bottle of Tylenol next to all my material.
Through reading, I found mentors, motivators, and friends. They were people I could relate to. People who had felt like I did and found a way to rise above it.
I learned more about the world through a year of reading than I had all throughout my years of school. And most of the challenges people complain about now became simple to me.
That may sound like an exaggeration, but you have to understand the impact words can have on your character.
Whenever you read, you open your mind to a new perspective. Just like in a normal conversation.
When you expose youself to the thoughts of others, you start to change the way you think. That new thought process shapes the way you act. And those consistent actions determine your character.
And that whole process started with a little reading.
“So where should I start?”
I’m glad you asked.
I’ll give a few recommendations here, but before I do that, I need to warn you about the danger of some reading too. The process above is helpful if you read good material, but if all you take in is garbage, that’s what you’ll get out.
So with that said, here’s where you can start:
The Bible
If there was one thing that helped me the most during this time, it was getting back into my Bible. And no, that’s not me pushing an agenda. That’s me telling the truth.
Earlier I said the world doesn’t really care unless you have something to offer, but there is Someone who always cares. And reading the Bible is how you learn more about Him.
The most common version of the Bible is the King James Version (KJV), but I think it’s best to read multiple versions to get the best understanding. Two of my favorites are the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the New King James Version (NKJV).
Some translations are definitely better than others, but if you read any of those three, you’ll be fine.
I should also mention that the Bible has been around for centuries, and scholars have spent lifetimes making it easier for readers to understand. That’s why I think it’s best to use a study version instead of one that only has the text.
I personally have a NKJV study Bible that I love. It has summaries of individual books, commentary for almost all the verses, and articles about specific topics.
Now if you’re new to reading the Bible, I’d encourage you to start with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Those are all about Christ and the work He did that was so important.
I’ll talk more in depth about all this in the future, but you can start there if you’re new.
But getting back to my specific experience with depression, there were two books of the Bible that helped me the most.
Proverbs
He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he. (Proverbs 16:20 NKJV)
When I was kid, one of my favorite teachers bragged on the book of Proverbs all time, and those memories stayed with me years later. So when I decided to get back into the Bible, it was the first place I went.
Practical wisdom fills the pages of Proverbs, and that wisdom is still relevant for people today. The book covers everything from communication, financial planning, and even dealing with the opposite sex.
Proverbs differs from many of the other books of the Bible as it’s a collection of wise sayings, and not so much a book with a consistent subject throughout. However, its general nature makes it great for application to numerous parts of everyday life.
So if you need advice for how anyone can find happiness and live a truly successful life, the book of Proverbs is one of the first places you should go.
Ecclesiastes
Maybe your depression doesn’t stem from a problem at all. Maybe it’s just a feeling of emptiness—a void you can’t fill no matter what. Well that’s what the speaker in Ecclesiastes describes here:
Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:17 NKJV)
It’s this ability to face the harsher parts of life that makes Ecclesiastes one of my favorite books of the Bible.
While the book is similar to Proverbs as it also contains guidance for practical living, the author focuses more on a big picture view of life itself. And while I wouldn’t call it a feel-good read, the author eventually describes how to find true purpose and live life to the fullest.
So check it out when you get the chance. People could save years of wasted time by reading Ecclesiastes and following its instruction.
Other Reading
I’m sure it’s clear that the Bible is the Book I hold above all others. That’s because the Bible doesn’t just inform—it transforms.
I do read a lot of other material though, but I can’t recommend everything I read in good conscience. I’m mature enough in what I believe to filter out what I know is wrong, but you may not be, and I don’t want to lead you down a wrong path.
I would recommend some stuff in the thinking genre here, but the more I read, the more I notice that most of the material is either just motivational or an over-complicated course on reframing. And if it’s neither of those, it’s usually downright delusional.
How to Win Friends and Influence People
One book that did help me though was How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Many readers consider it a classic and most people have already heard of it, but if you’re struggling to find detailed advice about forming better relationships, this is a great place to start.
I’m the furthest thing from a social butterfly and I’ve never been good at making friends out of strangers, but this book helped me get an understanding of how to become a somewhat likable person.
The book includes actionable advice in every chapter. And there’s one principle that forms the basis of all the techniques described in the book—think of others before yourself.
So that’s all I got for reading now. I know it’s not much, but it’s better to keep the recommendations short so you can focus on actually reading.
And oh yeah, I’ll keep posting to this site too.
Embrace What Others Hate
I don’t know when it became cool to tout vacation as the best part of your work, but I do know it’s a terrible trend on the rise.
No one wants to work beyond what’s required. And even that requirement is too much for some.
But the truth is that production isn’t a burden. It’s a gift.
And you have to cherish work as the gift it is.
Even when I was down, part of me already knew that.
That’s why I was gaming so much back then. It was something that gave me a sense of purpose when everything else was dull. My reality was still in shambles but my effort to work at something helped carry me through it all.
When I first decided to refocus on my schoolwork though, I thought I needed to prove something—like I had to show everyone that the old me had come back. But soon enough, I realized it wasn’t about that at all…
I was doing it because it was fun.
I sat in the front of classes and took notes like it was my God-given duty. If I wasn’t in class, I studied in the library. And if there was a group project, I planned the whole thing out and showed the group later.
Soon I was not-so-subtly dancing in class because it all became so effortless. My classmates probably thought I was crazy—in fact, I know they did—but I finally had purpose in what I was doing. I had real enthusiasm again and people picked up on it.
That’s because most people run from work. They hate it.
If you find a way to not just be good at what you do, but actually enjoy it, depression will be a thing of the past.
Keep Your Thoughts on a Leash
If you don’t get anything outta this post, at least pay attention here.
Every section in this guide—and the process of beating depression in general—revolves around controlling your thoughts.
Tumblr media
You may need to change your view of the mind for that to happen, so think about it this way:
For all the dog owners out there, do you let your dog mindlessly bark at you for as long as it wants?
Of course not.
Yeah you love your dog, but you have to discipline it. Good masters make their pets act within certain boundaries of behavior. And you have to treat your thoughts the same way.
You can’t let your head fill with blatant negativity. It’s your mind. You have to control it and make it work the way you want.
This whole guide is meant to teach you how to discipline your thought process. And once you recognize which thought patterns lead you towards a depressed mood, you have to shut them out.
I know it sounds difficult now, but those bodybuilders you see on magazine covers didn’t get that way overnight. Their form came from hours of sweat and hours of focus. It was the furthest thing from easy.
The same is true for mental strength. You have to consistently train your mind to think in beneficial ways.
And from what I’ve seen, you’re more than capable of doing that. People who are prone to depression tend to have the potential to develop the strongest minds. You just haven’t learned to control the amazing gift you have.
Yes, I know clinical depression is real and I’m not here to argue against that. I encourage you to see a professional if you need to, but I do know that it’s possible to control your thoughts. And yeah, that may make me sound ignorant, but I don’t claim to be a doctor, I’m just a problem solver.
If you think your thoughts are something you can’t control, you’ve already limited your ability to change.
I didn’t limit myself. No matter how hard things got, I knew there was a way out. And I kept fighting until I got there.
I challenge you to do the same.
Think bigger than your circumstances. Learn to control your thoughts. Don’t waste years of your life being an empty shell.
Your mind can only go where you allow it, so go out there and take it back.
I can’t wait to hear your victory story.

WHAT IS WEB 3.0?
Web 3.0 is defined as the creation of high-quality content and services produced by gifted individuals using Web 2.0 technology as an enabling platform.
Web 2.0 services are now the commoditized platform, not the final product. In a world where a social network, wiki, or social bookmarking service can be built for free and in an instant, what’s next?
Web 2.0 services like digg and YouTube evolve into Web 3.0 services with an additional layer of individual excellence and focus. As an example, funnyordie.com leverages all the standard YouTube Web 2.0 feature sets like syndication and social networking, while adding a layer of talent and trust to them.
A version of digg where experts check the validity of claims, corrected errors, and restated headlines to be more accurate would be the Web 3.0 version. However, I’m not sure if the digg community will embrace that any time soon.
Wikipedia, considered a Web 1.5 service, is experiencing the start of the Web 3.0 movement by locking pages down as they reach completion, and (at least in their German version) requiring edits to flow through trusted experts.
Also of note, is what Web 3.0 leaves behind. Web 3.0 throttles the “wisdom of the crowds” from turning into the “madness of the mobs” we’ve seen all to often, by balancing it with a respect of experts. Web 3.0 leaves behind the cowardly anonymous contributors and the selfish blackhat SEOs that have polluted and diminished so many communities.
What Is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0, or participative/participatory and social web, “refers to websites that emphasize user-generated content, ease of use, participatory culture, and interoperability for end users.” Web 2.0 is a relatively new term, having only come into popular use about twenty years ago, in 1999. It was first coined by Darcy DiNucci and then became popularized by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Doughtery at a conference in 2004. It’s important to note that Web 2.0 frameworks only deal with the design and use of websites, without placing technical demands on designers.
Characteristics Of Web 2.0
One of the main characteristics of a Web 2.0 site is that users are encouraged and invited to contribute content, instead of simply reading what’s already there. An example of a Web 2.0 site is Medium, a blogging platform where users contribute articles that they have written, as well as interact with content that other users have shared. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Instagram, are also great examples of Web 2.0.
However, this open contribution forum can lead to internet trolls who leave spam comments or leave nasty comments on the work contributed by others. When people say “don’t read the comments,” it’s often best to heed that advice. The comment sections, particularly on news forums like The New York Times or The Washington Post, can get especially nasty and the trolls are often out in full force. These trolls prevent important discussion from happening because people who have something to contribute to the conversation are often afraid to post for fear of being trolled or spammed.
OTHER KEY FEATURES OF WEB 2.0 INCLUDE:
Folksonomy: a way to classify information, such as through tagging photos, websites, or links; tagging enables users to find information in an organized fashion.
Rich user experience: dynamic, interactive content (for example, a user can click on an image of a plant to get more information about that plant — i.e. growth conditions, nutrient requirements, and more).
Software as a Service (Saas): sites classified as Web 2.0 use APIs for automated usage
User participation: helps with the flow of information between the user and the owner of a certain website (for example, Wikipedia allows users to create new pages and edit existing pages to keep information up to date).
Mass participation: we have nearly universal web access that leads to differentiation of concerns, from a traditional internet user to a wider variety of users.
WHAT IS WEB 1.0?
Web 1.0 is the term used to refer to the first stage of development on the World Wide Web that was characterized by simple static websites.
WHAT IS WEB PAGE?
A web page (or webpage) is a specific collection of information provided by a website and displayed to a user in a web browser. A website typically consists of many web pages linked together in a coherent fashion. The name "web page" is a metaphor of paper pages bound together into a book.

IMAGING AND DESIGN FOR ONLINE ENVIRONMENT
Principles of Graphic and Design
MOVEMENT
Movement is creating an instability, making motion to blur the image. Movement can be achieved by using graphic elements that direct the eye in a certain direction such as arrows that point the way overtly or a series of lines or dots that get progressively larger or smaller, creating a more subtle sense of movement.
Tumblr media
WHITE SPACE
In graphic design, “white space” refers to the space that surrounds the elements. You may find the term “negative space” here and there, indicating the exact same thing. However, this space is neither white nor negative. It’s simply the space in a design and it can have any color, texture or pattern.
Tumblr media
PROXIMITY
In graphic design, proximity is a principle of design that refers to the spatial relationship between the elements of the design. The rules of proximity are pretty simple: things that are related should be nearer to each other, and things that are unrelated should be placed further from each other.
Tumblr media
BALANCE
Every element of a design—typography, colors, images, shapes, patterns, etc.—carries a visual weight. Some elements are heavy and draw the eye, while other elements are lighter. The way these elements are laid out on a page should create a feeling of balance.
Tumblr media
CONTRAST
As a principle of art, contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough textures, large and small shapes. Contrast can be used to create variety, visual interest, and drama in an artwork.
Tumblr media
REPETITION
Repetition is simply repeating a single element many times in a design. For example, you could draw a line horizontally and then draw several others next to it. … Using repetition to keep the eye familiar with our design’s elements means we’re taking advantage of this tendency.
UNITY
Unity is created when there is a relationship between the different elements in a design or artwork. Unity adds order to a composition and helps us see it as one thing instead of a number of separate parts.

IMAGE FILE FORMAT
PNG
Portable Network Graphics is a raster-graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was developed as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format. PNG supports palette-based images, grayscale images, and full-color non-palette-based RGB or RGBA images.

TIFF is a lossless raster format that stands for Tagged Image File Format. Because of its extremely high quality, the format is primarily used in photography and desktop publishing. You’ll likely encounter TIFF files when you scan a document or take a photo with a professional digital camera.
BMP
The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file, device independent bitmap (DIB) file format and bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device (such as a graphics adapter), especially on Microsoft Windows[2] and OS/2[3] operating systems.
GIF “Graphics Interchange Format” (image type).
The acronym GIF stands for “Graphics Interchange Format.” A GIF is a short, animated picture, without sound. GIFs are typically used as memes, to portray an emotion or a reaction.
JPEG
JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable trade-off between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. Since its introduction in 1992, JPEG has been the most widely used image compression standard in the world, and the most widely used digital image format, with several billion JPEG images produced every day as of 2015.

WEB DESIGN PRINCIPLE
HICK'S LAW
Hick's law, or the Hick–Hyman law, named after British and American psychologists William Edmund Hick and Ray Hyman, describes the time it takes for a person to make a decision as a result of the possible choices: increasing the number of choices will increase the decision time logarithmically. The Hick–Hyman law assesses cognitive information capacity in choice reaction experiments. The amount of time taken to process a certain amount of bits in the Hick–Hyman law is known as the rate of gain of information.
Hick's law is sometimes cited to justify menu design decisions. For example, to find a given word (e.g. the name of a command) in a randomly ordered word list (e.g. a menu), scanning of each word in the list is required, consuming linear time, so Hick's law does not apply. However, if the list is alphabetical and the user knows the name of the command, he or she may be able to use a subdividing strategy that works in logarithmic time.
VISUAL HIERARCHY
Visual Hierarchy, according to Gestalt psychology, is a pattern in the visual field wherein some elements tend to “stand out,” or attract attention, more strongly than otherelements, suggesting a hierarchy of importance.
PROPORTION
Proportion is the systematic relationship of one thing to another in any given composition. In visual communications, it is an essential design principle that is defined as the integral relationship of sizes within a composition.
WEB DESIGN ELEMENTS
LINK
HOVER LINK
Hover Link is a simple extension that allows you to view and copy short URL and normal URL links on websites. For the short URL links it will display their destination URL as well.
ACTIVE LINK
An active text or graphic link on a Web page. Clicking the link redirects the user to another Web page or a document or image. Live links are also placed into email, allowing recipients of the message to immediately go to a website or open an attached document or image. In this context, live link is contrasted with a URL that is printed or displayed. If the URL text is in electronic form, it must be copied and pasted into a Web browser to function as a link. See hypertext, hypergraphicand URL.
VISITED LINK
The :visited pseudo-class selector can change some of the styling on an anchor link (<a>) element if the user’s browser has already visited the link. It’s meant to help users distinguish the difference between links they have and haven’t visited.
NORMAL LINK
Those that don’t have a mouse cursor over that link is considered a normal link. Some browser recognize active links when the mouse cursor is placed over that link. Others recognize active links when the link has the focus. Those that do not have mouse cursor over the link is said to be normal link.
LIGHTBOX
a lightbox popup is a window overlay that appears on top of a webpage, blocking some of the content on the page. When a popup appears, the background is often dimmed and disabled, meaning that site visitors cannot interact with other content on the website.
IMAGE ROTATORS OR SLIDER
A slider is a term that refers to a slideshow on a website. An example of a slider can be a revolving carousel that displays products or photos. Web designers can incorporate sliders into all kinds of sites, but they are most useful for businesses wanting to show relevant content or showcase professional portfolios.
TOOLTIP
A tooltip is a brief, informative message that appears when a user interacts with an element in a graphical user interface (GUI). Tooltips are usually initiated in one of two ways: through a mouse-hover gesture or through a keyboard-hover gesture.
ANIMATION
Web animations are often saved as GIF, CSS, SVG, WebGL or video. They can be anything from a simple underline that appears when you hover over a word to a full-screen video or background image. As with any other design technique, animations can be subtle or they might be in your face and hard to avoid.
FORM VALIDATION
To be specific, form validation is the process where a web-form checks to see if the information that’s been entered into it is correct. For example: If a field is marked “Email Address”, the form might check to see if the text that’s been entered is a valid email address.
INPUT FIELD
These include text fields, password fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, sliders and any other fields designed for user input.
LABEL FORM
Label form fields. Labels describe the purpose and function of form elements: for example, the label “month” next to a dropdown menu listing the months of the year, or the label “first name” next to a text input field. Labels are critical because they tell the user what information to provide in the form element.
Tumblr media
A webform, web form or HTML form on a web page allows a user to enter data that is sent to a server for processing. Forms can resemble paper or database forms because web users fill out the forms using checkbox , radio buttons, or text fields.

But with 1.24 billion websites on the planet, just how do you guarantee that your web site gets great web traffic?  Right here are my top seven Search Engine Optimization ideas that will certainly help drive traffic to your site:
7 SEO Tips to Drive Traffic
Key words: In many searches, at least 50% of people make use of 4 words or more. This indicates that simply keyword phrases are not important. You require long-tail keyword phrases that are specific to the search.  When it concerns broad key phrases, there is difficult competitors available which implies that you require to provide something even more to stick out amongst the group. A long-tail keyword is very important to ensure that individuals get specific results of what they are searching for.   Top Quality Content: In this affordable world, there are lots of people that write on the very same subject. What should you do various to obtain noted at the top of the search listings? The response is composing great, well-researched content.  The material on your website must likewise vary to prevent any kind of inner competitors amongst websites for online search engine listings. You need to arrange your site in manner in which when individuals look for something particular, all associated info is quickly accessible. Also ensure that your material is on a regular basis upgraded as internet search engine frequently check for updates to supply the most effective outcome to its customers. Composing great material can improve up your web traffic and eventually impacts your SEO.  Meta Description as well as Title Tags: Title tags are similar to a book title. If you want an internet search engine to trust you, a SSL certification is a must.  Mobile Kindness: According to Google, there are more mobile searches than on desktop computers in 10 nations consisting of Japan and also the US. In order to take advantage of this growing pattern, your web site requires to be mobile friendly.  Obviously, apart from these fundamental SEO suggestions, there are numerous various other ways that SEO can help drive website traffic to your site. Listed below, 91 SEO professionals share their finest SEO suggestions for web traffic generation.
Radomir Basta - 4 Dots
There are lots of points you can do around to accomplish this, yet I ll distinguish a number of foundational actions or seo pointers to take, to start driving more major traffic from online search engine queries.  To start with, make your internet site as technically polished as feasible.  People in some cases just maximize their web site on the surface, however stop working to dig much deeper as well as minify code, enhance the web server, relocate javascript to the footer, eliminate unneeded tracking scripts no one is making use of and so forth.  These tweaks, when built up, will create a significantly far better individual experience in regards to page tons rate, and also this is a straight signal for enhanced internet search engine rankings. After all, your final goal as an internet site owner is to make users feel comfy when browsing through your web pages, and so is Google s.  Along with this, I still can t imagine a full SEO project without deploying an appropriate web link building method combined with PR/branding efforts.  Publish outstanding and also pertinent resources on your sites, promote them both via social media sites projects and hand-operated outreach initiatives, and also it will work wonders for both the page you are aiming to enhance as well as the site authority in general.  Visitor posting is still the very best seo service for boosted brand awareness as well as well-targeted back links. Just focus on websites with a pertinent audience and also you ll be great.  Ultimately, producing touchdown web pages for all appropriate subjects with website traffic capacity ought to enhance the web site s keyword reach, and place it for new as well as potentially better converting keyword variations that vary across markets, areas, language and also social obstacles, expert occupancies or topical savviness.
Phil Rozek - Regional Visibility System, LLC
The create terrific web content and make excellent web links recommendations has been covered enough in the meantime, including by me. So my finest piece of less-obvious Search Engine Optimization guidance is: either specialize in a slim specific niche, or start supplying a truly unknown service (or item or widget). The weirder as well as even more specific niche, the far better.  If you re the only company, or only regional one, or the very first one, you can grab some very easy rankings, website traffic that contains individuals with a particular as well as prompt requirement, and often even a couple of simple links. Also, some individuals will come for the strange little solution as well as remain for the more-mainstream service( s) you supply?? for which your positions as well as exposure perhaps aren t so great. Go a little off the beaten path.
Eric Siu - Single Grain
There is so much material on SEO available, and it can really feel challenging to start an optimization overhaul. I concentrate on ideas or methods that are effective AND make the very best use resources, including the material you currently have. Right here goes:.  Update your existing material?? Existing material already has authority as well as a well established readership. So instead of composing something totally from scratch, discover a blog post already doing well, rejuvenate it with updated info, add visuals, as well as depend on existing signals to make it rate for terms.  Improve interaction to enhance positions. Take your existing web content and also make it a lot more readable?? separate any kind of huge blocks of message, splitting material up with headers, bullet points.  Concentrate on subjects as opposed to key words?? Google formula updates now allow the online search engine to identify intent as opposed to count solely on the actual key words. So while keyword research study is still very essential, concentrate on what customers are looking for as opposed to different methods to phrase a search query to increase up your SEO.   Develop backlinks?? Made backlinks?? via top quality material, outreach and also influencer advertising and marketing?? are still incredibly effective. As well as try to find guest uploading chances on reputable sites. We developed our domain name authority on guest messages from excellent websites like Entrepreneur, Hubspot, Forbes, and also more. While both back links and guest posts will take some manual outreach as well as tenacity, they re big for your brand name acknowledgment and Search Engine Optimization.  Reporting and also analytics suggestions?? The numbers put on t lie so measure what s functioning and also what s not as well as always remain to iterate.
Anna Lebedeva - SEMrush
Search Engine Optimization is an ever-changing idea. So to talk about search engine optimization, you really have to see what s going on with Google as well as its formulas. If we utilized to speak about keyword phrases, alt tags, LINK framework and also link-building?? I put on t wish to be deceptive, these things do still issue, a great deal?? material is now getting miraculous significance.  Material is king, we ve all heard it. Yet, material made use of to be vital because it was the way to position the best key words, to obtain backlinks and more. Yet, now when Google is all about search intent as well as bringing one of the most appropriate pages before the user, material becomes progressively vital to getting web traffic.  Besides, where does traffic come from? From individuals finding your content in much less time than your competitor s content. Which s when you need to enhance for # 1 or absolutely no setting. And also you just arrive if your content satisfies user s intent. That s how it functions. That s really completion factor of all SEO suggestions, techniques and also techniques.  So, I d state, rather than utilizing ideas and also plain techniques to maximize for online search engine, try to really get into the individual s head. What does he indicate by typing in fancy dining establishment for Valentine s Day. And also make certain your material addresses his/her needs. Individuals wear t requirement material for the sake of content, or for keyword phrases, or for backlinks, they require it for answers?? any kind of search inquiry is generally a question, even without the question words, so your actual task is to answer that concern.  So, the best Search Engine Optimization suggestion is a fundamental content optimization to respond to the inquiries your customers have, and also for that, you truly need to understand your target market as well as prepare for any concerns they require responses for. It s like an excellent old focus team strategy made use of in standard marketing?? prior to developing completion item, big companies purchase customer viewpoints and the needs they require to be covered.   Therefore, in addition to mere keyword/backlink research as well as on-site optimization, concentrate on discovering the questions your possible individuals require answers for. At SEMrush, we tried to accept this pattern by presenting rather an one-of-a-kind function for the SEO/content market?? we established a tool that really investigates the most prominent answers for the specific subject you are composing a piece of material on.

Okay, first things first. Most people seem to think that to create a character, you need a setting first, and perhaps you even need to know the plot. The truth is, you technically don’t. Not for the very basic character skeletons. All you need for that, is this basic profile.
Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Gender:
Sexuality:
Personality:
Appearance:
Motive:
Flaws:
Backstory:
Looks pretty simple, doesn’t it. And it is. This is the most basic character profile skeleton, and I myself often use this, even for the most minor of background characters. Why? Because everyone is the protagonist of their own story. Even those characters that only get one line of dialogue, or maybe they don’t even get that much. But they are still there. They are still a character, and the more you know about them, the more real and believable your story will be.
Now, let’s get into this a little further, shall we?
Names
This can be literally anything you want it to be. You want to call your protagonist Mugwump Doozeldorff? Go for it. But, here’s the catch. You have to think about why. Why did you name them that? Why would they go by that name? Think about the reasoning, and the plausibility. You can name them absolutely anything, but you can’t pass it off as a simple joke, really. Are they named after a legendary hero? Do their parents just hate them? Is it a common name in their culture? Is it a respectable name where they live, while a name like Steve is considered strange?
These questions help to develop not only your character, but the world around them as well. It even helps add to your character’s backstory a little, because it lets you start thinking about their parents and their family as well. In addition to this, something I tend to enjoy doing, is I like to look into the meanings behind names and where they came from. The meaning of a name can also give insight to a character, whether it’s their role in the story, or a personality trait.
So yes, you can name your character whatever you want to name them, but name them with a purpose. Think of it like a parent naming their newborn baby. Parents choose the names of their children for a reason, and often spend time debating names before the child is born. Do the same for your characters.
Age
This is another choice that should be made with particular intent. Don’t just pick a random number and be done with it. With age, comes experience. Not necessarily wisdom or intelligence, but experience. And experience can come across as wisdom the other a character is. For example, say you create a character who is a human in their mid-70′s. They have experienced a lot in their life. They have seen decades go by, and watched the world change. And they can teach younger characters about these experience, and share what they know of the past, to help those younger characters move toward the future.
On the opposite end, the younger a character is, the less they’ve experienced, and the less they’ve been affected by the way the world has changed, if it has at all in their lifetime. A ten-year-old kid is less experienced than a 25-year-old adult. But even that 25-year-old is less experienced than that person in their mid-70′s. As well, as people age, we develop different speech patterns.
Very young children often tend to talk a lot, and at a quicker pace, and they mispronounce words, or sometimes repeat phrases they don’t know the meaning of. Older children and preteens are still often eager to share what they know, and still may talk quite openly, and may even mispronounce a few things, but they know better now. Teenagers no longer mispronounce things, and they’ve developed a more unique speech pattern specific to themselves. This may carry some heavy pauses, or a tendency to say certain words more frequently.
Adults between 20-50 are more settled into a consistent way of speaking. They speak with intention, and some are more charismatic and well-spoken than others, but there is a deliberate intent to what they say, even if they might be wrong in saying it. And adults and elders between 50-100 even have their own ways of speaking. Still with deliberate purpose, but they think more on their words, and do their best not to offend. At least, until they’re around 80-100.
At that point, any filters are thrown out the window, and elders say what they want. Doesn’t matter if anyone else shares their opinion. They have one, and that’s that. Yes, you can get those sweet and gentle elders that are still so polite and kind, but even they lose their filter and speak just as openly as a young child, just now they have more experience to go with it.
So yes, be purposeful with the age you give your characters, because you’ll have to stay consistent with it. Now, I used humans as a base reference for this, but there are of course all manner of other beings that you can play with, and they all age differently. Especially if you’re working in the realms of fantasy, or the different planets of sci-fi. Elves tend to age much slower than humans, but there may be an alien race somewhere that ages faster. Vampires don’t age at all except in particular circumstances, and there may be aliens that are effectively the same.
In the case of aliens, it’s a good idea to look at various animal species on Earth first. How do they age? Do they have longer or shorter lifespans than humans? These are all things to consider when creating aliens for a sci-fi novel, or even if you intend to create your own fantasy species. All in all, age is important. So choose carefully.
Height and Weight
Something to consider when creating a character, because the bigger they are, the more trouble they may have with doorways, or the smaller they are, the harder it may be to reach things on high shelves. And in addition, weight changes proportionally to height as well. A taller person may be heavier, while someone smaller would be lighter.
Of course, every person is an individual, and sometimes tall people are skinny or short people are chubby, and vice versa. Still, it’s a good idea to research healthy body weights, and use it as a basis for fantasy races or aliens as well. And you should always consider if their weight comes from fat or muscle. Muscle is of course denser than fat, and by all accounts weighs more. So pay attention to that as well. Even if someone is for example, 6′2″ and skinny with some nice, lean muscle, they may still weigh around 200 pounds. Why? Because they’re tall, and they have muscle.
In addition, weight certainly plays a part in whether or not a character can reasonably walk across something that may break if they’re too heavy. Like thin ice, for example, or a rickety old rope bridge. Make it believable. And I am by means telling you that your characters all have to be at healthy weights. Just think about why. If they are underweight, why is that? Do they just have a very fast metabolism, or are they malnourished? If they’re overweight, why? Is it genetic, or did something else cause them to gain weight?
Again, make it believable.
Gender
We all know this is not synonymous with a person’s physical sex. This is in regards to a gender identity, not what genitals they happen to have. And again, this should be chosen carefully. Honestly, this is one thing that should be chosen even more carefully than anything else, besides perhaps sexuality. Because having a different gender identity than your assigned sex does come with burdens and stresses.
Also, if you intend to write a character with a gender identity that differs from your own, it is always a good idea to do your research, but even that won’t give you everything you need to write that identity properly. Talk to people with that gender identity. Get to know them and understand them, but don’t just talk to one person and call it a day. Like I’ve said, every person is an individual. And individuals all have their unique views and experiences. Talk to as many people as you can.
Otherwise, you can go right ahead and write what you know! Want more good representation of your gender identity? Absolutely go ahead and write it. Drawing from your own experiences is a great way to really develop a character as a real person. Be careful making them too much like yourself, though. It can be a tough market for those sorts of stories. You can absolutely go for it if you like, just be aware that you may learn things about yourself that you realize you hate more than you thought, or ever even knew you would. Believe me, I’ve already faced that in my own writing.
And of course, if your character’s gender identity does differ from their assigned sex, you are of course free to make a note of that when creating their ‘file’, so to speak. Because that is what this is. You are creating a file detailing information about your character, like a detective with a case file, or a psychiatrist with a patient file. All their little ticks are important to make note of.
Sexuality
Yep. This is another big one. Sexuality, as in who your character’s romantic and/or sexual interests may be, definitely plays a part in your character’s opinions and actions, and their personality. It changes how they view themselves, and how they view others around them as well.
Is your character a young boy figuring out how to handle being homosexual in an environment where it’s not accepted? Or is your character a heterosexual young girl in such an environment? Is your character attracted to both males and females equally? How does this correspond to their culture and environment? Or perhaps your character doesn’t experience any sexual attraction or really have much interest in the whole thing. Or maybe they’re that type of character that.. well, is perfectly happy getting down and dirty with anyone, anywhere, any time. Doesn’t matter the species, or the gender, or the sex.
And again, like with gender identities, do your research if you’re writing something different from yourself. Talk to people, get to know them and their experiences to write something from the perspective of a character like them. As writers, we are only capable of writing from what we know and have taken the time to learn about.
Personality
This is one of the most key details of any character, regardless of gender, sex, appearance, or species. This is what decides how they act, how they think, and even how they move. Confidence can make a character walk tall with their head held high, but if your character is the shy, quiet type, they’re more likely to keep their head low, and do their best not to draw attention.
Personality traits also define how easily angered your character is, or if they’re the non-violent type. It decides if they like things clean or messy, if they cry easily or not at all. This can also be affected by your character’s backstory, because.. well, aren’t we all changed a little bit by the things we lived through? That being said, this again should be done with intention. Yes, sometimes it can be fun to put our characters through hell more than once, I know I’m guilty of being a bit of a torture master sometimes, but too much trauma, and you end up with a character who can never recover.
So it’s a good idea to choose your character’s personality with intent, and be sure that you can keep to it. Even if you need to refer back to your character’s file, try to keep things consistent. Now, I’m not saying your characters can’t grow and change like real people do, but it should be believable, just like everything else.
Appearance
Here’s where you get to have a little fun, but again, think about what you’re doing, and how your character’s appearance and physical features may affect how they get around or how people react to them. Still, extra features like wings or tails can actually be helpful tools for getting some emotion across too. These are very expressive body parts.
You are free to decide your character’s hair color, eye color, their skin tone, how their body looks, how their hands are shaped, do they have weird feet, or maybe they have an odd birthmark somewhere. And of course, height and weight play into this too. Just know that you should know how to have your character’s looks also affect their surroundings. Are they attractive? Are they not the best in the looks department? If they have a different skin tone than is common in the area, how do others react to that? Every detail plays a part.
If you’re planning to give your character wings, think about them. Do some research on different types of wings. If your character has large feathery wings like a bird, what kind of bird are they most similar to? Or are they more like bat wings, or perhaps dragonfly wings? Just remember that if your character has wings, they should be noticeable even in the small details, not just something that’s there for the sake of convenience. Wings are very expressive.
Watch a few birds for a while, make note of how they move and use their wings. Feathers can stand on end when a bird is upset, or cold, or even too hot. Your character can spread out their wings to make themselves bigger if they’re trying to be intimidating. Or if they’re happy, maybe their wings give a little flap or buzz (if they’re bug wings) in excitement. As well, how large wings are can affect how your character fits through doorways, so be mindful of that as well.
Tails too are very expressive. Dog tails wag, cat tails twitch and quirk and display all kinds of emotions, even a cow or horse’s tail will move and flick back and forth depending on their mood. When a cow or bull gets upset, they can start lashing their tail. Horses too. Even a bird’s tail fans out or gets ruffled whether they’re happy or upset.
And there is also a lot of expression to be had if your character has ears different from those of a human. Do your elves’ ears move like a cat’s with their feelings? Or maybe a half-dragon has ears that occasionally twitch and wiggle like those of a cow. Everything makes a difference, and even if your character is typically the stoic type who doesn’t express much on their face, if they have other features like wings or a tail, or even different ears, those things aren’t as easily controlled if they want to hide their feelings.
Motive
Another fun little bit here. This is your character’s goal in life, and this can change over the course of the story, especially if they achieve their goal. Motives can be as simple as a child wanting to catch a very particular bug, or as grand as a rebellion leader wanting to protect his people. Again, though, these have to have purpose, and often they may tie into your character’s personality as well.
Still, as ever, we have to ask the question of why. Why do they have that goal? Why are they struggling so hard for this? Or, why aren’t they trying harder? As well, we of course have to think about (especially for larger goals, like rebellion for the sake of the people or a world saving quest) what the character is willing to sacrifice for their goal.
That kid who wants so badly to catch that bug. What is he sacrificing? Snack time, and to a kid that can be a pretty big deal. That rebellion leader protecting his people? He’s willing to sacrifice his own life to keep them safe. Even someone who wants to be with their true love, they may have to sacrifice family ties for that.
Motives create sacrifices, and sacrifices can certainly affect your character’s experiences. Also, you have to think about, is the sacrifice worth it in the end? Say your character was trying to save their best friend from a horrible fate, and to do it, they lost their eye because it had to be used as collateral to seal the monster. Was that worth it, if they still didn’t manage to save their friend in time? Is the little kid’s sacrifice of snack time worth it if now he’s really hungry and he still hasn’t caught the bug yet? Always think about if the motive is worth the sacrifice.
Flaws
These are the great equalizers. So your character seems like the knight in shining armor type, and they’re so perfect and everything they do is for a good reason and- wait. What do you mean they’re rude and biased about another species. Should that be considered racist? Well, maybe not completely, but negative biases like that can be a problem. So you see what I did there, right?
The perfect good boy, practically a shining example, suddenly brought back down from his pedestal to be just like the rest of us humble peasants. Flaws humanize people. They balance the good traits with some bad ones. And no, I’m not saying you should make all your characters racist. Not all flaws need to be grand and life-changing.
Like the kid with the bug. Yeah, we’re back to him again. Okay, so he’s a kid. Who’s sacrificing snack time to catch the stupid bug. Let’s say this kid is a pretty polite kid, he says please and thank you like he was taught, and he’s pretty easy to handle most of the time. Except.. uh-oh. This kid drew on his mommy’s newly painted living room wall yesterday! Even though she told him not to draw on the walls! Does this suddenly make this kid a horrible little demon spawn who no one would ever like? No. He’s just doing what kids do.
People develop flaws, often based on what they were exposed to growing up. So what about that character with those ugly, negative biases toward another species? That’s the rebellion leader again. He wants to protect his people, would sacrifice his life to keep them safe, and yet.. he thinks things like that? Oh, boy, people are gonna hate this one, right? Well, maybe, but what if I told you, he has his biases because it was members of that same species that killed his parents when he was only seven? What if I told you that members of that same species were cruel overlords that took over his home city?
Flaws have reasoning, and it’s usually because of life experiences and what people are exposed to, especially from a young age. Some of them though, may just be flaws because of the character’s age. Like that kid with the bug that sacrificed snake time and drew on the wall. That’s a kid being a kid. He’ll grow out of that one.
Sometimes, flaws can be used as a jumping point for a character to change and improve. The rebellion leader with ugly biases? He’s recently met some other members of that same species, and didn’t even know it before he became good friends with one of them. He got upset when he learned what they were, but that friendship he made, it changed him. He has his biases, but they’ve been softened by a good friendship. He’s learning not to be biased towards the whole species, because it’s not all of them that are the problem. Just a few giving the rest a bad reputation.
So you see why flaws can be a good thing, even if they are something as dramatic as some.. pretty nasty biases.
Backstory
This. Decides. Everything. How your character acts, what their experiences are, where they came from, what their culture is, why they may be hiding their sexuality or not hiding it. Everything. Like I said with that rebellion leader, his flaws are because of his backstory.
He was seven years old and watched his mother and younger sister killed right in front of him. Pretty traumatic for a kid to witness. Not only that, but they dragged his father into the center of the city and killed him as an example to the rest. Yikes. And as if it couldn’t get worse, one of them nearly tore off his leg, so now he needs a brace to even walk right.
Yes, this is one of my.. tortured characters. Him, and his best friend, who was enslaved by the same people who killed the rebellion leader’s parents and sister. Captured when he was three years old and raised in that nightmare. Yeesh. You’re probably thinking I need to pull back on the depressing backstories for a while, huh. Yeah, I probably do. And by no means do you have to follow my example.
Maybe your character had a great life. A great childhood with loving parents, got to visit their cousins every summer at their grandma’s house, everything was great. But then maybe they had to move from their childhood home, and it felt like the end of their whole world. It wasn’t, because life goes on, but it sure felt like it. And they’ve moved several times since then for different reason, and maybe it’s making them worried that they’ll never have a permanent place to call home, so they don’t get attached to places.
See? Even a happy backstory with a couple small bumps can have big effects on the character’s outlook on life. Backstories don’t have to be wild and dramatic to be important, and your character certainly doesn’t have to be dragged through hell and back to be interesting. It all depends on how you work with it.
Species
Now’s where things get really interesting. Humans should never be ruled out as strong characters, especially if they live in a fantasy world, or even if they’re surrounded by big tough aliens. Humans are tough. We are resilient, and we compete for everything. Space, food, love, happiness. We toughen ourselves up and live on a planet that.. to be fair, is sort of trying to kill us. But we are survivors. The human race even in the real world has gone through a lot of pain, but we survived.
Still, if you don’t want your character to be human, that’s fine too. There are literally hundreds of species out there to choose from, and you can even create your own. Want an alien a furry lizard face, four arms and a tail with porcupine spikes? Okay, that’s cool. Want a fantasy creature that’s sort of like an elemental spirit but also like a genie? Sounds good to me.
But of course, like everything else, your character’s species comes with important questions to think about. You know where I’m going with this by now. Everyone, say it with me. WE MUST ASK WHY. Why is always going to be the most important question you ever ask as a writer. Why did you choose this species? Why is this species living where it is? If they’re the last of their kind, why? As well, you need to think about the limitations of the species, as well as what they may be able to do better than humans.
Can your character fly? That’s great! But that also means they probably have large wings that may be difficult to fit through a doorway. Do they have huge claws great for digging tunnels? Awesome, but now that may cause some trouble trying to pick up small objects. Does your character have more than two legs and run super fast? Super cool, but now they have more legs to worry about and coordinate when doing other things, like sitting or even climbing up stairs. Maybe your character is a super big and strong rock monster. Absolutely fantastic. But that sort of makes them less than comfortable to hug, and also they have trouble fitting through doors.
Every species has their strengths, and their limitations. So, like with everything, we have to be aware of the details, and think about the balance. As well, things should be fairly believable for your world to seem real enough. Well, unless realistic isn’t what you’re going for. If that’s the case, ignore me. Go nuts, my friends. But from a believability stand point, your species’ limitations should make sense. Like the big rock monster for example. He can’t fit through door too easy, but what else? You wanna make him horribly hurt by water? Eh.. That’s Pokemon logic and if you want to go with that, that’s fine. But there are other things that could work better. Metal won’t hurt him much, but acid does. He’s got a hard, impenetrable shell of stone? Oops, there’s a gap in the rocks making a weak spot.
What about a person with dragonfly wings, like a fae or something like that? Ooh, very nice. Good with magic, tend to be rather pretty, and- Oh. Oops. Their wings rip like wet paper. Ouch. Also, there is real mythology that elves and fae, and species like them, they are repelled by or even hurt by or can’t use their magic when in contact with iron. You wanna put your elf in an iron prison cell for the sake of storytelling? Great, but remember that they won’t be able to use any magic to escape, and that iron could even possibly burn them. Even if it isn’t hot.
So, keep in mind your species’ limitations, and have fun building your world now around these characters you’ve created. Creating them gave you a great starting point, so go on! Write something fantastic!

lit mlm originals & fandom ocs. high fantasy. pokemon. my hero.
Do you like—? ◆ mlm romance ◆ holistic in–depth character development ◆ two main characters ft. a rich supporting cast  ◆ the flexibility to explore multiple genres, themes, & aus ◆ consistent ooc communication but relaxed ic reply speed
I’m looking to start some new stories. Usually I look for long term rps with a good slow burn plot, where we spend lots of time brainstorming characters and settings before we start writing. Lately, though, due to my availability and a desire to write more often, I want to shake things up—do something more casual.
I’m still looking for writers who share my love of character development, but I’m hoping to start out with a basic meet-cute / character a x character b style idea that we can jump right into and develop over time. I’m also looking for something with a higher smut to plot ratio, because—since I usually do slow burn and it can take months or years to develop the in character relationships to that point—smut writing is a muscle I haven’t stretched in a while.
Plus, I’m gonna be on leave from work for the month of April and bored AF. Tons of time to write!
Basic compatibility info — what I’m looking for / what i’m offering:
◆ literate 2-5 paragraph posts ( i can easily go beyond this – but for sake of reply speed, i’m trying to keep it in this range ) ◆ approx 1-3 post/week frequency ◆ possibility for the occasional back-to-back posts ◆ understanding when breaks are needed, because life yo ◆ passion for character development over time ◆ average character age 21–35 ◆ loves to write romance and smut ◆ okay with non-linear roleplaying – jumping around to explore diff scenes ◆ cool with all male identified characters:  masc, femme, cis, trans ◆ or to quote lizzo:  i like big boys, inner city boys, mississippi boys, inner city boys. i like a big beard, i like a clean face. i don’t discriminate, come and get a taste.
  Limits —  I don’t do:
◆ noncon ◆ underage ◆ humiliation ◆ watersports  / waste / filth ◆ captor  x slave   or   master  x slave ◆ anything that romanticizes torture, abuse, or rape Most kinks I’m down for as long as the context is consensual between the characters involved.
Premade Ideas —  I’m open to any ideas / plots / pairings,  so feel free to come to me with your ideas!
A tale of two princes  |   high fantasy  ◆ medieval or  modern (  think final fantasy xv  )
Prince A comes from a proud lineage of emperors who have united most of the known realm under common rule, bringing centuries of wars over territories and resources to an end — some say, for the better of all. Prince B is the last remaining heir of his lineage, the final kingdom to fall to the emperor’s conquest. In order to ensure his family’s continued loyalty to their new sovereign, Prince B has been “adopted” into the emperor’s household and given the superficial title of a diplomatic councilmember. On the surface, it appears to be a gesture of good faith — a symbolic appointment to show the empire’s commitment to creating a unified land full of peace and prosperity,  by giving the heirs of conquered kingdoms places of honor, where they might represent their people as diplomats, if not kings and queens. In reality, though, they are hostages: insurance that none of the former kingdoms will revolt. Amidst the political tension, Prince A and Prince B find themselves drawn together by an exciting mix of rivalry, curiosity, and taboo,  to discover a nascent friendship / attraction that is just as delicate as the union of their two kingdoms.
Roles:   Prince B  | looking for Prince A
Superheroes  |   inspired by my hero academia   ◆    modern   ◆    rivals  / enemies to lovers
Our Hero is a young rookie, fresh on the scene. In the past two months, the news has been dominated by reports of a new villain who has been involved in a series of break ins and robberies. The rookie hero sees capturing the elusive criminal as his chance to do good and gain recognition from solving a high profile case. Soon, the two are engaged in a thrilling game of cat and mouse — but when our Hero finally discovers the identity of the notorious villain, he realizes it’s a childhood friend. The two used to be close, but they lost touch during our hero’s training. Torn between morality and compassion, our Hero wonders where his friend went wrong, only to discover a curious pattern between the crimes. Could there be a reason behind the villain’s actions— or is he just finding excuses for someone he doesn’t want to see the bad in—?
Roles:   I prefer to play the villain / antihero  — holding out for a hero.
Pokemon league  |  fandom   ◆    modern   ◆    rivals
Original Characters. More “realism”—more adult anime style handling of the world and its contents. In particular,  I love Sword and Shield’s take on the Pokemon League as a big sports industry. It’s cheesy, but I have a soft spot for the combination of self-indulgent celebrity status / “live your fantasy” tropes where the characters are sports idols, pop stars, etc  and the good ol’ fashion rivalry between two pros from the same field. In this case, two pokemon trainers who compete in the pro league. Character A would be an established pro with a big fan following, while Character B is the new up-and-coming rookie whose ambition and success have captured the audience’s hearts.
Roles:    open to any—!

How the Application Process Works
With contributor applications opening on the 17th, we want to go over how the application process is going to work, as well as the different criteria we’re going to be looking for when we review the applications!
Tumblr media
General Info:
-> Applications will be submitted through google forms.
-> There will be three different forms: one for artists, one for writers, and one for the cover art/cover story.
-> Each form will require you to submit three samples of your work at minimum, five at maximum. The content you submit does not have to be utapri-related, but it does have to be consistent with the style you intend to use with the zine.
-> You will be able to select which pages you’re applying for, and you must list at least three pages *
->You will be able to select if you would like to collaborate with the artist/writer doing the matching page **
-> We want to keep the applications anonymous while reviewing them, so contact information will be on the second page of the form. Once we choose an applicant to assign the page to, we will then look at their contact info***
* We can’t offer an “any page” option because it becomes hell if everyone uses it. Similarly, if too many people apply for only one page, it creates a bias when reviewing their application.
** This option is for applicants who don’t have a clear idea of what they want to do for the page(s) they’re applying for, and are happy to collaborate with the other person.
*** All of the info important for the review is on the first page, so we will only look at that page when sorting and discussing applications. This system is not fool proof, because some people have very distinct styles, but it will help make the review fairer because we won’t know who the applicant is so we won’t be able to unconsciously let that effect their application.
This will also allow the admins to apply fairly as well – if we want to apply for a page, we will fill out the form just like everybody else. The admin who applied will obviously recognize their own application, but the other admins won’t know about it. All admins are trusted not to push their own application forward unfairly.
We will be looking at several different factors/criteria when we review the applications, not just overall craftmanship, because we don’t want to bar out or discourage less confident and/or less experienced creators. We really do want this to be a fun project where as many people as possible can participate!
(We will be organising something during the lead up to the zine’s release where creators who didn’t get a page post something and tag us in their work so we can reblog/retweet it. More information on that later.)
More information about cover artist/cover story applications will be posted tomorrow!
Artist/Writer Application criteria + Pinch-hitter information below the cut!
Artist Application Criteria:
-> Style-appropriate polish that is "finished" enough to be printed in a book. (doesn't have to be a masterpiece since we accept a wide range of skill levels, but we do have a bare minimum bar)
-> Good framing, posing, and composition (good use of negative space, art that looks coherent and not cluttered, etc)
-> Amount of character/personality within the piece (this refers to how the figure is portrayed within the piece and how clear the artist’s intention comes across)
-> Ability to draw backgrounds (no complex bg's necessary, as long as some form of bg is there and it suits the style in which the piece is drawn)
(Note: we define ‘background’ as a construct which breaks up space behind the scene. This can be as simple as a pattern or geometric shape, or as complex as a full location setting)
IMPORTANT: uploaded samples cannot contain personal/contact information in the file title for within the file itself! It would compromise the anonymity of the application! (this includes watermarks and signatures)
Artists will be required to submit at least three sample pieces of work that showcases what they feel to be the best examples of their skill. Within those samples, there must be something with a background, and something that features at least two characters as the focus of the piece.
These criteria do not have to be present in each sample – i.e. if the piece that you feel is some of your best artwork does not have a background, you can still submit that, as long as one of your other sample pieces does have a background that we can look at.
Writer Application Criteria:
-> Overall coherence and consistency of narrative (doesn’t have to be written like a poetic masterpiece, mainly looking at the general flow of the piece)
-> Character portrayal and differentiation (again, doesn’t refer to a character being “in character” in compliance to an existing canon. Refers to how the characters are written within the piece, whether they are clearly defined or seem very similar to one another, etc.)
-> Appropriate use of relevant and irrelevant information (general balance of good focus on things that are important + good use of extraneous detail to show without telling, etc.)
-> General storytelling (good use of dialogue, action, and narrative within the confines of the space/word count to accomplish the goal or climax of the story, showing not telling, etc.)
IMPORTANT: uploaded samples cannot contain personal/contact information in the file title for within the file itself! It would compromise the anonymity of the application!
Writers will be required to submit at least three sample pieces of work that showcases what they feel to be the best examples of their skill. Within those samples, there must be a completed short story (less than 1k words, around 500 – 600 preferred), and something that has at least two characters in primary roles.
These criteria do not have to be present in each sample – i.e. if the piece that you feel is some of your best writing does not have at least two characters you can still submit that, as long as one of your other sample pieces does have at least two characters.
A further note: if you do not have any shorter pieces to submit, there will be a place where you can explain/plan out how you would make one of your existing stories into a short piece of around 500 words. Please also upload this story as one of your samples is possible – it does not have to be a completed work.
 Pinch-hitter Information:
(Note: ‘pinch-hitter’ = someone who will act as a back-up if someone with a page drops out or goes AWOL and doesn’t meet the checkpoints)
If you would like to be considered as a pinch-hitter, you will be able to indicate this at the bottom of the first page of the form. You will also need to provide the absolute latest date that you would be willing to pick up a dropped page before the final submission deadline, as well as any pages you would not be willing to do.
Applying to be a pinch-hitter does not affect your application for the zine. You will be contacted before the results are announced to confirm if you would still like to be a pinch hitter regardless of the outcome of your application review. You can still decline at that point.
In the instance where a page is dropped, it will be first-come-first-serve among all pinch-hitters who have not vetoed that page and for whom it is not past their specified date.
That’s everything! If you have any questions, feel free to send them in!
