Hi Miss Raven! I am here today to ask if you have any thoughts on Ortho’s age. I see a lot of people saying that Ortho is mentally a child which is the reason he’s left out of a lot of like x reader stuff which I totally understand why that would be uncomfortable. Sometimes I see people saying that Ortho is actually closer to 16 though? I’m kinda confused now so I wanted your opinion. Thanks and sorry if this is an uncomfortable subject or something.

Like I expressed in this post about Malleus’s mental age, I don’t think there’s a very obvious right or wrong answer to this. To the second anon, please refer to the post I linked to answer your question.

I understand that people can be uncomfortable shipping Ortho with other characters, who are typically teenagers or actual adults, due to how he appears very young. That’s entirely their right to do so, and it’s a valid stance to have. I myself choose to avoid shipping Ortho too, but I have additional reasons that I won’t get into here since it gets sort of personal 😅 However, I also hold the opinion that Ortho is not mentally a child, even if he may physically present as one because of his small stature.

Let’s quickly review the lore behind Ortho and why some fans see him as a child. He’s a technomantic android created by Idia and imbued with the memories of the original Ortho, the younger Shroud brother who passed away in a horrible accident. In 6-75, we learn that Idia was 10 years old at the time of this accident, meaning that Ortho was 2 years younger than him at 8 (since Idia is currently 18 and, in book 7, Ortho is starting his first year at RSA as a 16-year old).

Ortho mentions in his Birthday Gear vignettes that he has the strongest birthday memories of 11 years ago. If we assume Ortho is 16ish now (also stated in his Birthday Gear), this seems to imply that OG!Ortho died after his 5th birthday, perhaps as young as 5 years old. Idia would be 7ish around the time Ortho is 5. Factoring in the 2 years that pass after Ortho’s death, Idia is would be 9-10ish. This creates a potential contradiction, as the S.T.Y.X. researchers appear to claim Idia was 10 at the time of Ortho’s death and not 2 years after it. The only way this works is if they were talking about 10 year-old Idia in the present, but Idia was actually closer to 7-8 when he hacked the security systems 💦 I’m going to assume ghat the “strongest birthday memories” mentioned in the Birthday Gear vignettes simply refers to a very detailed memory due to the happiness OG!Ortho experienced that year, not that it was the last birthday he experienced before death.

It should also be noted that it took Idia roughly 2 years to actually make the technomantic android we now know as Ortho. If we add these 2 years to Ortho's original age at death (5 to 8), he would be around 7-10ish in his new form. For the sake of simplicity, I will assume the older age estimates in the rest of their discussion.

Ortho's official profile lists his height as 148 cm, which is significantly more than the height of the average 10-year old boy (~138.5 cm). His actual height is, however, very close to the average height of a 12-year old boy (149 cm). Ortho at this point also sounds different than the child Ortho we see in Idia's post-OB flashback, indicating that our Ortho is slightly older than at the time of death. Idia most likely designed robo!Ortho to match the age Ortho would have been at, had he lived those 2 years.

Altogether, this, at best, places Ortho at 8 years old minimum and 10, maybe 12 years old maximum. That makes him not even a teenager yet--so why do I think he's actually closer to 16 mentally and not 10-12? Because he knows much more than the average child does and is able to very eloquently verbalize his vast knowledge.

Now, I do think an argument can be made that Ortho only knows as much as he does (including his vocabulary) because of his inherent nature as a robot and not as an organic being. Ah, and here's the crux of the issue: can we judge an android by the same standards as that of a human??? In my eyes, a gifted or genius child cannot compete with the capabilities of a supercomputer. Ortho is equipped with very advanced learning algorithms, which allow him to pick up on and learn quickly--and this is something that I equate with his ability to grow and develop as though he were human. In Fairy Gala If, Ortho defines his own understanding of evolution and applies that concept to his runway walk. Even the emotions that Ortho currently expresses are the result of him learning from the media he consumes and then emulating them. He's formally recognized as a student late in book 6 as well, which effectively makes him a first year (most of which are 16ish). I assume that Ortho even starts to take classes meant for first year high school students at that point, and has no issues with the difficulty of the material. I think that, to label him as 10-12ish or even 8, it unnecessarily infantilizes Ortho minimizes his own advanced ability to learn and grow and change: things that are most definitely human.

I also think that Ortho's behaviors are too mature for a typical child. That's not to say that he's the peak of maturity (let's not forget how often he defaults to trying to laser beam his problems away), but Ortho is typically very logical and relies on cold, hard facts to make optimal decisions. He is also the one that usually moderates Idia and tries to encourage healthy behaviors in him, like socializing, leaving his room, sleeping on time, eating well, trying new things, etc. Ortho is essentially his brother's keeper for a good chunk of the main story and in vignettes (like Ceremonial Robes) and events (Harveston Sledathon, Wish Upon a Star, etc.). This isn't an absolute, of course. I can see people pointing out that Ortho only acts logical because he's a robot, or that little kids are sometimes forced to "grow up" faster due to their pressing circumstances (which, in this case, is Idia and his anxiety). These are valid interpretations too. If memory serves correctly, the students at NRC don't exactly treat Ortho like some baby that wandered onto campus. At most, they tend to just refer to him as Idia's kid brother. ("Kid" here not referring to Ortho literally being a child; it could also be interpreted as "younger" brother or the "younger/little" Shroud.) The few who do make fun of him for looking young tend to be mobs or painted as misunderstanding him (as is the case with Ortho's Ignihyde Gear vignettes). Ortho even seems to be surprised at being mistaken for a child by Diasomnia mobs: "A kid? Oh, you must not know who I am since you're freshmen."

Idia had the liberty to design Ortho's body however he wanted. As previously stated though, it's likely that he modeled the body off of the age of death rather than updating it to reflect a more mature mentality. In other words, Ortho's body doesn't reflect what he knows or how he acts. If I had to give a real world comparison, it's like how there are really short adults--but that doesn't make them any less of an adult just because they're short; they often can't help their bodies being that way. (In Idia's book 7 dream, Ortho at age 16 is still depicted as being short.)

I do think that, to some degree, Ortho is aware that he presents like a child and knows how to use this to his advantage to get his way. He sometimes plays it up to beg Idia to come out of his room, and, in his Ignihyde Gear vignettes, Ortho plays innocent to Trein so that it seems like some mob students are bullying him (even though the truth is that Ortho was playing embarrassing videos of said mob students for he public to view). "Professor, I was just minding my own business and drying the sheets when these two started yelling at me... *sniffle*"

Those are my thoughts! Please bear in mind that this is just my own interpretation; it's in no way canon, and nor am I insisting it to be. Ortho's age is officially stated as "undefined", so I don't think there's a clear number we can put to him. It's really up to individual interpretation! I hope that I was able to provide both sides to the argument and sufficient information for you to come to your own conclusions about Ortho's age ^^

About that sort-of-finished drafting Chapter 3: I had to cut 7000 words of writing today which I don't feel brilliant about. I'll move a lot of it to a couple of chapters later... but still, it's easy to get stuck on numbers going up and seeing that as the most valuable metric of progress, and I need to write something to replace it. I've made a start on that and it's already feeling more natural, so I think my instincts are right for this.

Hopefully I'll be feeling more cheerful about how things are progressing next time I do one of these. Looking at the numbers themselves, I have done a lot - it's just hard to focus on that when a lot has needed to be removed, and I'd always prefer to be driving forward.

(Which it still is, I know, just in a different way.)

Our epic tale began on a cold, wintery eve. Under the dim light of a moon hidden by snowy clouds, the city transformed. Walls creaked and crumbled, rebuilt in an instant in new shapes; new forms. The modern metropolis was replaced with a realm crafted from sugary treats. Gingerbread walls, gumdrop roads, cinnamon stick trees, candy castles. For this was now a fantasy candy land: the realm of the Candy Witch.

"AWAKEN, WOULD-BE INVADERS!"

The witch's voice would boom, a thunderous sound with a tinge of familiarity to it. "You dare encroach upon my land? The Candy Witch's kingdom? Well then, I challenge you. Find me at the tippy top of my castle tower, but not before my trials are passed! Only then might you challenge me and, if you win, I may consider a way to send you home!"

In front of every non-NPC entity in the city a holographic paper appeared. A character sheet. "But the witch would not leave you without a means of accomplishing your tasks," Another voice spoke. It sounded similar to the witch's, but was much gentler. Almost as if there was a singular actor playing two different roles. "Will you take up a blade as the noble HEARTBREAKER? Perhaps you would prefer to cast the spells of the PASSION CASTER? Does the healing power of the LOVE DOCTOR tickle your fancy? Or does the path of the thieving HEART STEALER beckon to you? Fill out your character sheets and review the attached quest list, and let your journey begin!"

THE VOICE GOES SILENT

While the people of Spirale would hear nothing else for now, in a dark lab a young woman turned off her microphone. "I'm an android, I'm not supposed to be an actress..." Ofiuco rested her cheek gentle in front of her keyboard. "Oh well. I've always wanted to try LARPing, so why not give this a go? I think everyone could use something a little silly for a change, especially with Valentine's coming!"

OVERVIEW

Welcome to our 33rd event, SUGAR QUEST IV: THAT MOMENTARY SWEETNESS! This event was inspired by a mix of old RPG games and silly mobile game events. So what's going on?

The people of the city are awoken to the sound of a familiar voice claiming to be the Candy Witch who issues you a challenge: pass her trials and find her at the top of the castle tower.

Everyone will fill out a quick character sheet that can be found on this page, which will determine your stats, class, and abilities!

The wards of the city have all been redesigned with a candy fantasy aesthetic, and you can find these changes listed in a section below. For the duration of the event you cannot access the branches.

Trials will be offered in the form of quests that can be chosen at your leisure. Participating in a quest is not mandatory for acquiring participation, but you will receive a flat 200 Stars for your character's account. You can only claim this 200 Stars once, so doing multiple quests will not net you more.

If you're just interested in event participation, any interaction will count regardless of whether it's in a quest or not! We'll also be offering Oficucotot, Bringer of Love as an exclusive event reward! She's a six inch, Ofiuco-shaped drone that follows after you and shoots tiny arrows at your foes. Not lethal, but very annoying! The item description reads: "Watch Your Eyes!".

F.A.Q.

Will this event have a part 2? No! There is only one part to this event. There will be a raid battle during the last week of the event where everyone can face off against the Candy Witch, however.

Can we use our regular powers and weapons during this event? Unfortunately not! Your character has been stripped of their powers and had their physical abilities reduced to that of a normal human. You can only rely on the abilities and weapons provided by the class you choose and your character sheet stats! For non-humanoid characters, please reach out to the masterlist for accommodations!

Are the listed monsters the only ones in the setting? Nope! Those are just suggestions. You can design your own monsters to face, and even the ones listed alongside the locations are open to visual interpretation aside from the traits already listed.

Will my character undergo any visual changes during this event? Your selected class will grant you specific gear and weapons as part of that selection. Otherwise, nope! At least unless you disturb the fairies in the forest...

Are we required to use the quests for our threads? Nope! You can use them if you want the 200 Star reward, but it isn't mandatory to do a quest to get participation and the Ofiucotot, Bringer of Love. You can just do a different thread in the setting!

Ok, there are so many titles up here today, BUT two of them are less than a minute long (one being literally three seconds) and it felt like a wasted post with out any point at all. When I saw the first recommended video (which you can see here), I knew I was gunna have to do some pre watch research. This is what I found:

A Keepon Pro was a social robot designed for interaction and research with children. This little yellow cutie (pictured below) interacted with people and did little dances when music was playing! This cute little guy was used and observed to “elicti positive engagement from children of varying social ability” according the their website (beatbots.net). Under the control of a therapist, it was used on children of varying ability to study their social behaviors. Pretty freaking neat!

Back back to Philip, I was NOT PREPARED for this video. I have been informed by a close friend that there was so much more waiting for me in these later videos. Using a bluesheet and some stuffies, phil essentially recreated the previous video, but added interesting background behind his dancing characters like Freddy Kruger, Airplanes, and conventionally sexy women. That’s it. Thats the whole video. What a time to be a youtuber.

This video is three seconds long with a description that simply says ‘fail’. Someone, presumably on of Phil’s university friends opens some kind of pressurized can or bottle and it just explodes all over him and he screams. You can kind of here Phil laugh behind the camera, but thats it. If we had had it, this would have been an instagram story, I can almost guarantee!

WARNING... YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES TO GET AWAY FROM THE DWELLERS LEST YOU'D LIKE TO BE EVISCERATED...

It was an announcement broadcast setting-wide that certainly would have given anyone still fighting the Dwellers plenty of time to evacuate. And once they had? There was an almost unsettling stillness both across the island and throughout the space station. A feeling of anticipation and concern. Was there a plan B if this didn't work? Potentially scrapping the entire project if need be.

12:00AM

If you looked up at the sky at the very moment it turned 12:00AM you would have seen a number of "stars" light up with bright blue not all that far out. Satellites that had been repurposed for this very moment charging beams of light that crashed down onto the moon and branches of the island.

From the city it seemed like a light show signaling the end of days, with pillars of light crashing against the sounds of screaming monsters. Enough damage had been done for the beams to be effective, thankfully. Once those pillars of light thinned into nothing there was nary a Dweller nor Latcher left.

The sound of a news report helmed by Ofiuco in android form played in the background as the Stars conducted their review the next morning.

The sound of one of them tapping the table was the most distracting. "So you're saying we still don't know who got in through a backdoor? Is there still a risk of them slipping in again?" This issue had been resolved, but clearly not in the way they would have liked.

"No... While security has been bolstered with new measures it may be a matter of time before something happens again. But how did they know about the project? It wasn't NULL based on our reports. It lacked all of their signature methods and digital fingerprints. We can only assume it was an independent party."

"And what of Ofiuco?" Another asked while leaning back in their chair. Her absence was notable considering she had been at the forefront of the incident.

"She felt bad, apparently. Reincorporating the Spiramonsters in the manner we have was her idea, and so she's been dealing with the upkeep. I still think it would have been easier to just delete them, but..."

"Perhaps because she too is an artificial lifeform..."

THE STRANGE EVENTS COME TO AN END... FOR NOW.

Thanks for participating in DATA CORRUPT! The threats of the monsters have been dealt with and some semblance of normalcy has returned to the city again. Although not without some changes!

SPIRAMONSTERS ARE NOW A PERMANENT GROUP FIXTURE!

While they won't exist in the city in a physical sense, every citizen will find a brand new application on their phone simply titled "SMAR (SpiraMonster Augmented Reality)". Upon activating it you will be able to see and interact with your Spiramonster freely, and anyone else who activates the app nearby will be able to do the same (no weird glasses or goggles required)! They will not be able to interact with the physical world, but an AR copy of their surroundings will be created so they can interact with that instead.

Those who obtained the Spiragotchi during THE CHALLENGER'S PATH will still be able to interact with their Spiramonster that way as well. Having one also adds the functionality of allowing you to dress them up in cute outfits without the hassle of having to make them sit still to physically do it.

Additionally, during events that feature combat segments like this one did, characters will be able to summon their Spiramonsters to fight alongside them in the physical world if you so desire!

Because of this, new characters will be able to create their own Spiramonsters even after the event has ended. You can even modify the one you have provided you follow the initial guidelines in THE CHALLENGER'S PATH post. All of this information will be put together on a page at a later date.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Aside from the usual Stars reward you get from completing an event, there will also be a small unlock or uncap that you can obtain through the Galaxy blog between the days of Monday, September 4th and Monday, September 18th. To be eligible for this reward you must have participated in either part of the event and include where to find your participation in the ask along with the power / weapon you would like unlocked or upgraded.

POST-EVENT FAQ

What if I want my character to get struck by a space laser? That is 100% your prerogative if you want your character to be turned into nothing! They'll respawn of course!

Are there any remnants of the Dwellers or Latchers? The Dwellers have been completely obliterated down to the molecular level. The Latchers were so spread out, on the other hand, that you may still find them mingling with the island wildlife for the foreseeable future in very rare sightings. Hm... Hopefully they can't reproduce?

Everyone's powers were returned to their original limitations, right? They were!

Who is the culprit behind this incident? Unknown, but they will make a return in the future. Probably not until a 2024 event however!

Why is Ofiuco the cutest? She was scientifically engineered to be "the cutest".

Youtube's insane war with Adblock

Anti Adblock has been the bane of any casual website viewing experience and any website I visits that had those banners is typically written off entirely, and now Youtube is one of them but they take it to a whole nother level. Apparently on the Ublock reddit. They have to routinely change up how they block the banner every couple of days and by extension, you will have to update your ublock every couple of days for it to work and may have to only use Ublock because it can conflict with other blockers.

How did we get here? Oh right, every multi million dollar corporation keeping the lights on with advertisements. Advertisements so bad the our governments actually consider it a good idea to have ad block on because advertisements are a hotbed for malware to speak nothing of deepfakes or outright scam ads that the FTC considers too small a problem to get rid of.

I mean ever since Ross from the game dungeon released his video where he said that Games as a Service are Scams I've been workshopping basically the same sentiment for advertisements.

Companies sell ad space with no expectation that customers will click on the ads, only that for all intents and purposes, they presented the ads to you and are thus owed money for providing that service.

Advertisers dump tens of thousands of dollars just so the advertisement can be clicked on with the possible chance of making a sale as that's the only way to actually get a return on the investment of the advertisement in the first place.

After all a really great product doesn't even need an advertising budget per se. Word of mouth is so powerful, hell, a 7-10 review of a product from a random youtuber generates more attention and sales than a million dollar super bowl advertisement. As long as you get the right Youtuber it's way more cost effective to not have traditional ad spaces.

Not that sponsors are free from guilt. Sponsors are often scams as well. There's been more than a couple sponsored products that were scams but unlike Youtube/Google which can sell ad space to con artists and never suffer an issue, one video from Scott Schafer can convince the youtube community to effectively deplatform a bad product or service.

I mean Raid Shadow Legends still falls through the cracks but it's better than nothing.

But I've been preparing for this, actually a few people have. Louis Rossman has been working on some Manhattan project called Grayjay that will bring multi platform streaming all under one app.

There are of course other streaming platforms with different, more affordable hosting methods as well as ways to monetize content that hopes to not make the same mistakes Youtube makes with budgeting.

There's my method which is downloading every video you think you'll ever want to watch more than once, putting it on a single hard drive and then using some server hosting service like Plex and you just stream your own content to yourself (which by the way is really affordable to do as long as you are okay with 1080p to 360p as higher resolutions on very long videos like streams will soak up a lot of space for what is just one video).

A third method is installing Linux on a machine and gain access to some linux exclusive apps like Freetube which removes the bad aspects of Youtube and only has the videos as well as sponsorblock with no ads to boot (you won't be able to block content though and there's no algorithm so you better know what you want to find because you are on your own for real).

The last method is Vanced. It was supposed to be dead but like a building that's closed 11 months in a year, it sprung to life one day and now lives although you will have to have a android device and learn the side loading method to get it really working.

I've been saying this about Youtube and Twitter X for awhile now but you really should consider a future where Youtube doesn't exist, companies are tightening their budgets across the board, once the advertising firm gets slashed basically everything dependent on it will evaporate. Not enough people will ever use Youtube Red to keep the lights on for Youtube as Youtube's budget is constantly scaling and impossible to price in.

The lost media Youtube will create when it shudders is beyond your comprehension.

Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire. Jack Frost is nipping at your nose. Mom and dad can hardly wait for school to start again. All the dogs in the neighborhood somehow learned to bark Jingle Bells in sync. Yet retail workers are still more annoyed with Mariah Carey. Snow is getting shoveled, tossed, and formed into sentient beings leading parades without permits. It makes for an excellent distraction as the Krampus abducts children for bad behavior. Fruitcake is exchanged only to find its permanent home in the garbage. Terrorists have hijacked the Holiday office party right before your boss can give you a Jelly of the Month Club membership as your bonus. And of course, the Turducken has returned to wreak its fiery vengeance upon an unsuspecting world! If all this doesn’t put you in the Christmas spirit, perhaps these following Holiday specials will!

Greetings people of today and robots of tomorrow! It is I, Santa Clark, your geeky giraffe friend with a deep love of Christmas! My obsession for the yuletide is rivaled only by Maleficent’s hatred for it, which is saying a lot considering she once teamed up with Mad Madam Mim to kidnap the literal Spirit of Christmas. Yes, that really happened. I know this due to my annual pilgrimage to the Island of Misfit Specials, home to obscure or nerdy festive media ranging from movies, TV episodes, and comics. It’s no easy journey. Constantly I find myself confronted by sinister snowmen, genocidal gingerbread men, and worst of all, crappy commercials. Getting stabbed in the foot by a candy-cane wielding cookie is one thing, but I swear I’ve seen that ad for Wilbur’s White Elephant Gift Emporium more times than I’ve seen Miracle on 34th Street! Sometimes at night I catch myself reciting that jingle. Wilbur’s White Elephant Gift Emporium: Where Christmas meets Convenience! Huh, maybe Maleficent had a point.

Nah, my deep-rooted appreciation for this time of year can weather even the most moronic marketing! It helps that most of the merry media I’ve seen have put me in the perfect Holiday mood! Examples include the time a Ninja Turtle found himself trapped in a truck full of stollen toys, a drunk department store Santa stumbling onto a wish-granting magic bag, Big Bird nearly becoming a popsicle, Gwenpool waking up in a world where Galactus took the place of jolly ol’ Saint Nicholas, a terrifying tree stump trying to slaughter some saps over a stupid ship war, and the year when Death gave the Little Match Girl the greatest gift of all. Needless to say, I thought I had seen it all. That is, until I took my friends on a trip to the Island, tasking them to find me new, strange, seasonal specials to review! Some of them were fair, finding me festive favorites as comforting as coco in front of the fireplace. Others were fiendish, wanting to feed off my misery like Gremlins after midnight. Regardless of how naughty or nice my companions were, I’ve compiled all of their suggestions into a makeshift advent calendar! So stay tuned everyday until Christmas to see how badly my buddies can shred what little sanity I have left.

Very good intro, but I also don't think there's a single RH album I don't love the intro of. I really like how the drums are kinda intercalated (for lack of a better word)! Listening to it reminds me a lot of how I'd put the album early morning to go somewhere

It's the first radiohead song I got really really into. I love it so so much but anything I can praise about it has been praised to death already LMAO

The lyrics are so fucking literally me and the song probably has some of my favorite lines.

It's a very beautiful song, I didn't care as much as other people for it at first but I really like it now, the way it picks up is super nice to me and makes it a lot more emotional :]

I used to leave it on repeat for so long! I don't fully agree with anyone that says it's overrated, might not be on the top of my list but it deserves it's place

7. Fitter Happier

I used to stare at people who skip it weird. I might still but I get it. This might be my "I'm 14 and this is deep" side but the lyrics and the poorly played piano with the strings? Yeah... I also don't mind the TTS at all

8. Electioneering

Shame they forgot this song fucking exists, but I think it's interesting it was meant to be one of the singles for the album (I assume since it's more energetic it'd keep the attention people got from the previous album?), anyway it's a fucking great workout song!!! Seriously I did so much cardio to this.

9. Climbing Up the Walls

MY BABY GIRL MY FAVORITE MY PRECIOUS TREASURE I WILL RAMBLE ABOUT THIS SONG!!!! It's my favorite radiohead song ever together with Ful Stop and it deserves more love imo, I love the creepy strings (shame you can't hear them as well in the mix, but they sound so fucking good isolated), the lyrics, the scream at the end, and it sounds so atmospheric to me.... I relate to the feeling a lot

10. No Surprises

I really like how it comes after CUTW, specially when it sounds so soft. I also like how it's a little slowed down, it sounds really bittersweet to me.

11. Lucky

I love lucky so much, it was one of the songs that drew my attention first in the album. It sounds like a sunny afternoon to me and idk it makes me happy!!! I like how it's an indicator of their transition from the bends to okc too

12. The Tourist

I didn't care that much for it at first and part of me wanted polyethylene to be here instead (cuz I fucking love polyethylene), but I've grown to like it and I genuinely appreciate it as an album closer! There's not a song in this album I dislike, really
