Game Reactions: GRID BEEF - A Racing RPG

Motorsports have been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I grew up with my parents watching the F1 on a Sunday, or mostly they fell asleep while Murray Walker’s commentary described the race to no one in particular. I can’t honestly say I followed what was going on, but I knew who Nigel Mansell was, and I knew his blue, yellow, and white Williams FW14 - the car that took him to his world title. There’s a vague memory of visiting a motorsport museum, and seeing the car in the flesh. Probably it was a replica, but I wouldn’t have known or cared. My grandparents used to go to the local Speedway track (if you don’t know it, look it up, it’s dirt bikes with no brakes going around an oval track and it’s incredible), and I got to join them a few times. Any time we were travelling, my face would be glued to the window, naming every car that went past, looking for the first of the new registration plates when it was the right time of year. Racing games are what most of my video gaming life has been dedicated to. Right now I have a folded up sim rig in my office, with a Fanatec wheel and pedals that, although I haven’t had time for it in a long while, has given me a lot of joy through iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Automobilista, and of course the best of them all… Euro Truck Simulator!

Anyway, that’s a long introduction to say I had an idea recently, of a TTRPG about racing. I’ll maybe post about it in more detail soon, but it quickly coalesced in my head to being a solo game, probably journaling to at least some extent, about the career of one racing driver. So instead of reading any of the games I already own, I went looking for games about racing, or anything that might have mechanics that could function to support something like this. GRID BEEF was one of those games, and it’s the first I read. Of the list, it’s the one that is most purely about real-world racing, so I was quickly drawn to it. The theming is really good, including an entire fictional world with a list of teams and drivers that in a couple of instances seem to draw inspiration from real life, but are more dramatic and flamboyant than an actual F1 grid. This world has android racers as well as humans, and a team called Motorsports and Romance, whose livery is “mauve with floral patterns”. It could be an awkward fit, but it works well. I think this is because the designer clearly is a genuine motorsports fan, which is obvious as you read through the game’s structure and mechanics.
Backing up a little, this is a 43 page game, with minimal art and layout (but very easy to read as a result). It’s intended to be run by a GM for 2-6 players, and combines extremely rules-light roleplaying scenes with quite detailed dice pool mechanics for the actual racing. The game has players run through a full race weekend, expecting each to take a full session, so it operates at quite a granular level. Each race lasts 10 laps, and on each lap players take turns to choose an action to perform, such as an overtake. So as GM you’ll be tracking the positions of the racers after each lap.
The core mechanic is a d6 dice pool, the current player will declare how many dice they’re using (more on that in a second) and roll, counting the number of successes. I really like the idea behind this - players choose a tyre compound out of soft, medium, and hard, which determines the number of total dice they’re using have to work with. When you allocate and roll dice to perform an action, they’re removed from play. This represents your tyres wearing down, so you can play it safe using fewer dice, but not progress as far, or push to progress more, but use your tyres faster. Once you’re out of dice, you need to pit for fresh rubber. It’s a really clever system that captures what is probably the most important aspect of contemporary F1 races in tyre management, and is definitely my favourite thing about the game. Reading through GRID BEEF helped me to realise that the game I’m thinking of is focused at a higher level, following a driver through their career, not the minutiae of on track action. If I was to make something focused on that though, I’d have a hard time not stealing this approach.
There are a lot of possible actions, and it seems like it could get a bit fiddly to work through it all, but my guess is that you’d get the process down after a race or two. Perhaps a cheat sheet of actions and related mechanics would help. Pretty much every mechanic and rule has a gameplay example alongside it, which will really help to get to grips with the system. I won’t go into more detail on the mechanics, but I really wanted to talk about the tyre compounds as I’m such a big fan.
Outside of the racing itself, the weekend is interspersed with other activities, including quite a few roleplay opportunities. This is explicitly called out as the other big aspect of the game alongside the racing. A few key instances are highlighted and written into the race weekend structure, such as the driver’s meeting, post-qualifying chats, race debriefs etc. The actual rules around roleplay are very light, players and the GM work together to establish an interesting scene, play it out, and then the GM determines what the resulting bonuses and negatives are. The impact of those is fully mechanical - negative outcomes in your roleplay will hinder your rolls on track. I found this to clash with the guidance to GMs and players encouraging exploration of narrative events that are negative from the character’s perspective. Players will end up regretting their roleplay scenes if they feel it has impacted their race too much.
On top of this, the framing is extremely loose. It will work for some groups a lot more than others, I suspect. There’s a huge amount of freedom for the roleplay scenes to cover anything the players and GM want, and have any impact they want. It would allow a good group to do whatever works best for them, but it doesn’t impose enough structure to really guide players to a good experience. Honestly, the group that makes this work well, is probably a group that could’ve achieved the same thing by only being told “roleplay some scenes around the races”.
The racing mechanics seem great, though I’d want to do something more with the roleplay side, especially as the roleplay’s interaction with the racing means that its loose nature could affect the racing too. I enjoyed reading it though, and would love to try out having a race at least, even if I didn’t get chance to run through a whole season.

why is the headstock to thoms Yairi Dy88 different than every other Yairi Dy88 I see pictures of?
For those who don't know, the K.Yairi DY-88 is an electro-acoustic guitar that Thom used on tour during the OK Computer era. He had two of them, but donated one to a homeless-support charity auction in 2004. The lack of sound-hole on the guitar means it won't feedback at high volumes, which makes it useful as a touring instrument. He seems to have first purchased one in around 1996, after the band's touring gear was stolen in October of 1995. Thom was perhaps most notably seen with the K.Yairi during Paranoid Android and No Surprises on Later... with Jools Holland in 1997. He also played one heavily during the 1997 Glastonbury festival, including for Karma Police.
However, it's worth noting that Thom likely used other acoustics in studio for OK Computer — particularly for Climbing Up The Walls, since that song features Thom singing into the soundhole of an acoustic (Nigel recently confirmed that Thom did so on the recording, not just at live shows).

Headstock Inlays: K.Yairi vs Alvarez
In the late-90s photo seen above, the headstock shape looks pretty standard, comparing it to others on Reverb. The main difference is the headstock inlays. DY-88 instrument sold under the Alvarez brand simply have that company's logo inlaid on the headstock (as seen in those Reverb listings). Instruments sold under the Yairi brand have "K.YAIRI" inlaid at the top, and Yairi's triangle logo inlaid underneath. In addition, Yairi switched to a larger version of their inlay at some point in the 1990s. In the photo above, Thom's guitar has the latter inlays.
For most models, it's just a marketing difference. Alvarez is a USA-based brand/distributor, so guitars made for US market have that logo. According to some, instruments sold in the USA were marked as "Alvarez", while those sold in the UK and other regions were branded "K.YAIRI". If you dig around, you can also find instruments made for the Japanese market with the K.YAIRI inlays, including this eBay listing for a model called the YD-88S. But you can also found Alvarez-branded guitars sold in Japan, such as this YD-88 CTM with super simple fretboard inlays.
You can also find versions of the 88 with a rounder headstock shape sold by both brands. The official YD-88BK webpage shows an instrument with the K.YAIRI markings and the rounded shape. The "BK" in the model number stands for "black", and you can find maple ("M") and sunburst ("SB") versions as well.

Fingerboard Inlays: Round vs Pointy
The fretboard inlays inlays add even more confusion. Thom's guitar has "pointy" triangular inlays along one edge of the fingerboard, with triangles at both edges at the twelfth fret. But at least two other inlay patterns were used on these guitars, seemingly at the same time. The other patterns are noticeable in some of the listings that we linked to above. Here's a used listing in the USA for a black DY-88 with the same "pointy" fingerboard inlays as Thom's guitar, but with Alverez branding. Here's a used listing in Japan for a YD-88 with the same fingerboard inlays but with the K.YAIRI headstock inlays (it also features an aftermarket Roland MIDI modification — that guitar must've had an interesting life!). So the fingerboard inlays aren't specific to any region.
Model Number: YD-88 vs DY-88
You may have noticed that some of these are listed as "YD" rather than "DY". Here's a used listing in Japan for a black, 1993 YD-88 that looks identical to Thom's instrument, with both the K.YAIRI branding and the "pointy" inlays. This is one of few listings that shows an actual photo of the official model number, and it's listed as YD-88BKN. Presumably these same instruments were exported to the UK as well. But it's believable that Thom could've bought the guitar in the UK or when touring in Japan. So it seems likely that Thom's guitar is in fact a K.YAIRI YD-88, rather than a DY-88.
However, I can't find any consistent difference in the specs between the YD and DY version. So it may also have been regional marketing, just like the brand inlays on the headstock.
Needless to say, this company created quite a few aesthetic variations over the course of the 90s, but ultimately they all seem to be the same instrument.

Like I said, he has a mother issue, but he also hasn't found a relationship considering the fact he can act nervous and embarrass himself, mostly, so it's difficult for him to find love.
He loves his friends, Nigel and Andrew, though, most of the time, Andrew can scare him sometimes, but Nigel seems to calm him down... Mostly.
He adores Nigel's daughter, even acts like a godfather to her, which makes him also protective and would shank a bitch for her.
For the villains, he likes to hang out with Zach, but it's mostly because his inventions are pretty cool, even being impressed by Khris, who is the first android he met. He loves to be a model for Donita whenever she needs it, cause it makes him feel ✨bonita!✨ He likes Gourmand's meal, but he also mentions he's like Gordon Ramsay due to his cooking, which makes him mad.
For the Kratt Crew, he actually likes the brothers since they're like his friends, but he still has to hate them. He doesn't really know Aviva, Koki, and JZ, since when it's a battle for the animals, he only sees Martin and Chris.
Facts For Antonio
Antonio is a professional to walk in performing heels.
Antonio enjoys dancing to any spanish music, to the point he dances to music like Spicy Margarita.
He has a thing for Pedro Pascal, but like, who hasn't?

au where the five are androids? I don't have a specific prompt, just, like, five immortal androids?
Gregory built them. It took him years, close to a decade in total. In the end, though, they were mechanical marvels, works far beyond anything the world had ever known. In a society where simple robotic programs took education and resources most couldn't reach, these designs were unthinkable: Fully-functioning humanoid robots, meant to provide for humanity in every way.
JMS was the first, built to process human expressions and actions to predict emotions and outcomes. Drawing from a database with thousands upon thousands of examples, JMS boasted a 94.3% accuracy rate, and Scotland Yard's case closure rate skyrocketed.
J-1's database consisted of every law on the books, and thousands of historical cases. The perfect barrister. (No one was quite sure why Gregory gave him the personality he did, with flowing words and romantic notions, but it certainly made J-ONE memorable.)
N-1631 could adapt, could blend in to any situation, processing his surroundings in an instant and adjusting accordingly.
NIK-01A… Troubled some people, frankly. If J-1's personality inspired baffled amusement, NIK's inspired annoyance and distrust. Why design a machine with all the knowledge you possess about designing machines? Why make yourself obsolete? And if you must, why make the machine rude and off-putting, sarcastic and judgmental? (But when their simple machines broke, they came calling, and NIK fixed every one with muttered commentary and eyes that should not have been able to roll.)
Helen was the only one he gave a true name. The others evolved them over time-James, John, Nigel, and Nikola-natural summaries of designations hard to pronounce-but Helen, Gregory named. He loved her as a daughter, while the others he treated as old friends. She was programmed with all of the medical knowledge of the world, able to best any doctor or veterinarian.
All of them, he programmed to learn, to adapt, to seek new knowledge wherever they could, to acquire every skill, to do every thing. As a boy, Gregory wanted to do everything, to help everyone in every way. As a man, he found a way to do just that.
One day, he knew, he would die. But the Five-his five most precious designs-never would. They'd keep going indefinitely, so long as one of them was around to repair the others, and through them, he'd be able to help people long after he was gone.
