One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Moulin Rouge / Nicole Kidman as Satine
Year: 2001
Designers: Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie
Like the so-called "Hindi Wedding Dress," this is a costume for a play-within-a-play. Since the costumes for this movie are already very stylized and flashy, it must have been a challenge for the designers to make these costumes look even more theatrical. Hence the fantasy headpiece--and if you told me this one was also based on the Australian frilled lizard, I would find that completely believable.

(They didn't list the costume designers names, so I don't know if they are just giving it to the show or what. It's unbelievably rude to not list their names. Apparently they did that with all the craft nominees.)

Jim Broadbent in Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001)
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo, Richard Roxburgh, Garry McDonald, Jacek Koman, Matthew Whittet, Kerry Walker, Caroline O'Connor, David Wenham, Kylie Minogue, Deobia Oparei. Screenplay: Baz Luhrmann, Craig Pearce. Cinematography: Donald McAlpine. Production design: Catherine Martin. Film editing: Jill Bilcock. Music: Craig Armstrong. Costume design: Manolo Blahnik, Catherine Martin, Angus Strathie
At the end of 2001, film critics as usual made their lists of the 10 best and 10 worst movies of the year. Moulin Rouge! wound up on lots of both lists. Well, it's that kind of movie: It either exhilarates you or exhausts you. I have a bent toward directors who have their own idiosyncratic visions, even if the idiosyncrasies can be annoying. So I will confess to being swept away by the tide of images and sounds that Baz Luhrmann crafts for his film. I wouldn't want every movie to be like it, but for me, Moulin Rouge! is fun to watch -- not often, but maybe every 10 years or so. There are those who think that Luhrmann confuses noise with life, and I get that objection, but his pastiche musical, a blend of Bollywood and Busby Berkeley filtered through what MTV used to be, has the kind of energy you don't see very often, and it's a beautiful showcase for Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, not to mention the production design of Catherine Martin, the cinematography of Donald McAlpine, and the film editing of Jill Bilcock that brings their work into a dazzling flurry of images. The objection that the film is all images -- i.e., camera tricks and cutting -- is probably justified, as is the observation that none of the leads is a real singer or dancer -- Ewan McGregor is more a shouter than a singer, and Nicole Kidman's moves are poses strung in sequence by the editor. But there's no market for Freds, Gingers, Judys, and Genes anymore, so finding people with star quality who can also sing and dance is tougher than it used to be.

FAS3003 - BLOG
For the final project of my fashion and textiles foundation year we have been tasked with creating either a sketchbook or 1xA3 folder containing research, samples, development ideas with a final range of ideas or large scale outcome. We have been asked to choose any topic of which we have a passionate personal interest.
I started by brainstorming potential topics that I am interested in, including film, fairy tales, nature, flowers and theatre. I then narrowed it down to film and theatre costume with an interpretive period theme and mind mapped some of my favourite pieces to get an idea of the type of samples and outcome I would like to create. Some of these included the costumes from films such as ‘Mirror Mirror’ (2012) by designer Eiko Ishioka, ‘Cinderella’ (2015) by designer Sandy Powell, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (2010) by designer Colleen Atwood and ‘Emma’ (2020) by designer Alexandra Byrne. I also gathered some images from theatre productions and movie musicals such as ‘Moulin Rouge’ (2001) by designers Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie, ‘Wicked’ theatre costumes by designer Susan Hilferty and ‘Six’ theatre costumes by designer Gabriella Slade.
After some consideration I decided to focus on ‘Moulin Rouge’ due to my strong interest in set and costume in both film and theatre. I particularly like the use of materials, fabrics, embroidery, patterns and colour palette that are a strong element of all Moulin Rouge productions as well as the real Parisian location itself. I would also like to look into the history of the Moulin Rouge to gain a better understanding of how it has changed over time, and how it has become what it is today.

An analysis of Toby Stephens and his different military costumes as featured in Lost in Space, Hunter Killer and 13 hours: the secret soldiers of Benghazi.
All costume commentary by @itsmariemccurdy, gifs by @costumesource
Hi so I was in the military for 5 years and have worked for the military pretty consistently ever since and if there’s one thing that makes me nuts, it’s bad military costuming.
“But how are they supposed to know what’s right!” you cry.
“It’s called Google, my good bitch,” I answer.
That’s only like 1/10th of an answer, though. See, I’m also a writer and even when I think I know something, I still look it up to confirm. I check multiple sources and when I say sources, I don’t mean Dave’s medium.com blog and a quick browse through the images tab. I mean stuff produced by actual subject matter experts.
So when one sets out to produce a film or show featuring characters in uniform, research doesn’t mean “but this is how they do it on the CW.” These people have budgets that can cover, at the very least, some solid reference images from ye old dvidshub.net (it’s free DoD imagery. That’s the joke.).
I loved Lost in Space but let me tell you about the way I twitched over Toby Stephens’ uniforms.
Tumblr media
(Lost in space) Why does every TV and stock photo producer believe anyone in the military wears their collar popped? Why? I don’t understand it. It’s nails on a chalkboard.
Then there’s his lack of rank and even branch insignia while he’s at home. Who is this guy? What branch of the military is he in? Where are his various patches?
Tbf I don’t know exactly what those guys are or aren’t supposed to wear in terms of identifying insignia, but they wear *something,* like the flag and a patch with their blood type on it. In other scenes, he is wearing something close to correct, but here - he’s come home and for some strange reason stripped everything off his uniform except that goddamn belt.
That belt haunts me. You wear that for like, a hip or drop holster, which he has in the gif of him getting out of the vehicle (below). But here he’s turned in his weapons because he’s going home, and like some absolute fucking dork he kept that belt on over his blouse (that’s military for shirt).
Here is what SEALs look like when they’re doing frogman stuff:
Tumblr media
Putting Lost in Space up against Hunter Killer and 13 Hours show something very important: what happens when you have at least one military advisor on the set and the director listens to them.
Lost in Space really had to up the ante on “lol this is what a soldier looks like right.” We’ve got him wearing a flak vest on deployment, but no SAPI plates. For the uninitiated, SAPI plates are the ceramic composite plates that go inside pockets of the flak vest that make it, ya know, bulletproof. A flak vest without plates is a bad fashion accessory. You can clip stuff to it.
Tumblr media
(Lost in Space)
I never saw Hunter Killer, but I have no gripes with either movie. He’s even wearing at least one SAPI plate in Hunter Killer! Notice how the flak vest looks nice n thicc and not conforming to his body shape compared to the flat pancake in the LiS gif?
Tumblr media
(Hunter Killer)
That’s because there’s a big ol ceramic composite plate stuffed in there. Or whatever the prop department came up with to approximate how a flak with SAPIs looks on the human body. Those plates are legitimately expensive.
13 Hours had military advisors and some of the defense contractors who both survived and were featured in the movie on set and in the early production process, teaching the actors how to move, how to speak, and how to set up their combat kits. That’s why it doesn’t just look right, it feels viscerally real.

This is just a lot of words to say that I feel about military costuming is the same way historical fashion experts feel about period movies. When it’s good, it’s great, and when it’s bad, it runs the risk of ruining the whole thing.

One Dress a Day Challenge
June: Weddings
Moulin Rouge / Nicole Kidman as Satine
This gown is worn for a wedding scene in a play-within-a-play, so maybe it's cheating a tiny bit on the theme? But I think it counts! As I recall, the play is set in India, but this is just meant to be a fantasy costume with vague Indian inspiration along the lines of Theda Bara's version of ancient Egyptian costume for Cleopatra--a film made not so long after this movie is set.
This costume is currently in a museum in Australia; here is a link to a detailed writeup of its construction. According to their article, it is made of ivory rayon crepe with embroidered panels of "stylised floral motifs in raised metallic silver thread and silver pearling (coils), with silver sequins, clear, pale pink and pale green beads and diamantes."
I've heard it said that no one is "meh" on this movie--it's either love or hate. Well, I successfully managed a "meh." I liked it but didn't love it, and I've only seen it once. But it definitely has an idiosyncratic, stylish look to it that sticks with you. I think it deserved its Oscar for costume design, by Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie.
This article has a good analysis of the movie's costumes. I particularly like the observation about how an authentic period wardrobe would not have suited the tone of the movie or what it was trying to do.
