I'm thinking about Eternals and how Marvel inexplicably sold it as a hardcore love story despite the leads having absolute negative chemistry and seeming to have co context behind either their relationship or their breakup...meanwhile Drug and Makkari were around in the background as this actual immortal love story...they had common interests, chemistry, and an actual affinity for each other on their side, and it was all an accident because the actors played so well off of each other. Lauren had a bit of a fanbase from the Walking Dead and Barry was soon to become a much bigger star and yet Marvel did....nothing with it. All they seemingly care about is Harry fucking Styles and how many projects they can put him in or in reintroducing their beloved Ikaris into another guise where they hope people will flock to him.

▪️ Your powers had appeared during a freak accident, that you still didn’t like to talk, or even think about. 

▪️ But the end result; you could manipulate the natural world

▪️ Air, Earth, Water, Fire - 

▪️ It made you a formidable opponent

▪️ And the best teammate 

▪️ Although sometimes it was difficult to reign in your power. That made you really insecure... but that was before Druig & Bucky.

▪️ With their help, you were able to control your power, truly make it your own. It was a deliriously happy moment - when you were able to completely integrate you and your power

▪️ It was in those hours that Druig and Bucky seemed to take to each other, like they formed a background crush on one another

▪️ Where it was obvious that they both had a thing for you. A deep thing. 

▪️ So yes, it did start off as a love triangle, with both men having a competition to gain your favour. 

▪️ But the world is crazy and you never know what will happen next, so you said: 

  “I’m not going to choose. I either have both of you, or neither.”

▪️ And damn, that was a boss moment, because both men looked at each other and shrugged

▪️ “Together then,” Druig had said, breaking the silence 

▪️ From then on, the three of you were always grouped together. Whatever happened before you got together was never talked about. 

▪️ Your relationship was the start of your story 

▪️ Druig’s favourite thing to do is piss off Bucky, and at the very least - tease him relentlessly

▪️ Although he can’t go with the old man jokes because ... he’s older than Bucky 

▪️ You all work because Bucky is the backbone of the relationship, but can become very depressed, Druig has humour and mischief but too can become grumpy with too much outside human interaction, and you’re their hope. Their light in life. 

▪️ It really works because you’re all introverts

▪️ You’d rather be at home, reading, writing, or watching tv with the guys

▪️ And they feel the same way

▪️ Druig has seen the world, the best and worst of it

▪️ Bucky has sacrificed a lot for the world

▪️ And you have endured a lot of trauma

▪️ So you all live in your own little bubble 

▪️ Bucky is actually a pretty good cook

▪️ But Druig hates cooking - he doesn’t want to waste his time making anything too complicated 

▪️ So you and Bucky are usually in the kitchen, cooking up a storm, while Druig makes sarcastic remarks from across the room 

▪️ Oh and you have two cats, one black and one white

▪️ Their names are Sam and Magnus

▪️ Yes one is named after Sam Wilson, and when he visited your place and found out, all he did was laugh

   “You know what Buck? I’m flattered!” 

▪️ And no, Druig doesn’t use his mind-control, you and Bucky have forbidden it. 

▪️ But he can do it to assholes when you’re out and about. Especially drunk ones 

▪️ After a while, you guys would go and do vigilante stuff

▪️ Because you felt bad that awful things were happening and the police were doing nothing about it

Eternals STEM TRIO: Chaotic Siblings from Infinity to Beyond Part 1 of ???

Before Tenochtitlan

Phastos along with our girls make up the ultimate STEM dream team that could literally achieve anything.

Phastos is physics, technology, astronomy, mathematics, architecture, and engineering; Kaet is magic, medicine, biochemistry, healthcare, and anatomy & physiology; Sephia is agriculture, zoology, biology, chemistry, food science, and environmental sciences

But whenever Phastos gets stuck on a math problem, the first person he’ll go to would be Sephia

Oh yeah, this pink flower goddess is huge math nerd. Her mind is wired a bit differently from others, and numbers just make sense to her.

And while sometimes her short attention span will get the best of her, when she is in the zone, she is in the ZONE

One time she and Phastos were stuck on a math theorem during the Renaissance, and didn’t sleep for about a week straight.

Kaet ended up using her shadows to swaddle them straight jacket style for them to sleep, literally to only wake up 3 hours later with Sephia poking her cheek to wake her up to tell her that they proved it.

But Kaet is also the biggest hypocrite because she will research and dissect organisms for days on end with Phastos too.

These three invented the term “insomnia.”

Phastos does typically have a healthy sleeping schedule unless he is really focused, Sephia is the same in a slightly more extreme manner, but Kaet will deliberately not sleep until she has found her answer or satisfied with her work.

 Everyone wants her to sleep, and her reply will probably be something along the lines of “can’t die, won’t sleep, suck my magic dick.”

The only one that can really manage to get her to sleep at times is Druig, and that’s during the times he has to physically pry the tools out of her hands and strip her down and wrangle her into a shower before forcing her to cuddle with him to sleep

He’ll also make sure to sneak in some sexy times with her in the shower for good measure

Honestly, Kaet lowkey really loves the attention and will purposely stay up to late just to rile Druig up

Listen, she can't help it if all that pent up energy transitions to mind-blowing sex

But she also wants to find out the physical limits of her own bodily functions by staying awake as long as possible, and to see if she’ll eventually hallucinate.

"I want to see if this rib cage can turn into a xylophone"

Once it got so bad that Sephia made a sleeping powder of dried gardenias and valerian to blow in Kaet’s face. She immediately conked out, and sleep for a solid week.

When Ajak confronted Sephia, her only response was so fucking chaotic and unhinged.

“Oh, don’t worry, Kaety’s not poisoned. She’s just drugged.”

And everyone just stared at her while Sephia was smiling like there was nothing wrong in the world.

On the plus side, she monitored Kaet’s vitals and functions in her coma and was able to get some really great data on the benefits of those plants used for anti-anxiety and insomnia medication

This launched an era of the two gals cultivating and drying various plants to be used as medicine for various ailments and even pain relievers

They definitely used the other Eternals to test the drugs (mostly Ikaris) and some of the side effects were…interesting to say the least

One-time, Ikaris was so high off this preliminary version of anesthesia from poppy seeds that he might have gone on a 3-hour spiel about how Sephia’s hair was so super pretty, and how it smelled so nice, and how it looked so soft, and how he would cut his own ear if it meant he could see her boobs and cu-

Don’t worry the drugs kicked in again before he could finish (in more ways than one lol)

Speaking of Ikaris, while Kaetlyn is the most protective over she sweet Sephia, Phastos is a VERY close second

This inventor man does not believe for a second that this puffed-up chested man with his dumb quaffed hair is good enough for Sephia

Sephia would be the only Eternal who is genuinely interested and fascinated by Phastos' ideas and inventions, and will ask very good questions

And he's beyond grateful for her

On another note, just imagine the dread that overtook Phastos when Ajak basically assigned him on Kaet & Sephia watch duty.

Poor man just wanted Arishem to send him to another planet right then and there.

So…when Phastos learned that Ajak died, he was extremely sad…but mostly terrified because this meant only one thing now

HE had to be the mother figure of both Kaetlyn and Sephia

Throwback to the image at the top is literally all you need to know about the dynamic between this man and the two gals he’s in between

Fun fact about Sephia: sometimes she will be really quiet, and her mind will be like a million miles away, and then she will think of the most random stuff and start giggling like crazy

Phastos actually thought she was possessed by a demon and wanted Kaet to perform an exorcism…only to remember that Kaetlyn is even crazier

Phastos has seen Kaet do the Naruto run before it was even a thing at the most random times and always with the most chaotic crackling laughter the world has ever known

Kaet has purposely summoned and captured the weirdest monsters and ghosts FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE of freaking out Phastos

Migraines have become a good portion of this man’s daily lifestyle

But luckily, Sephia is there to save his mental health by brewing the most calming tea and shoving a super fluffy animal for him to cuddle with whilst asking him questions about his inventions

The three came up with their own STEM TRIO manifesto around the same time the Magna Carta came out

Phastos and Sephia are each other's worst enable when it comes to missing social engagements because they will literally come up with the worst excuses for their absence when facing Ajak's interrogation

"Phastos, why were you not at the party last night?"

"I-" "He had to help me make a contraption to help an aging ape give birth to a mutated baby"

"..." "..."

"What she said"

"Sephia, these celebrations are in your honor, it offends the chief if you do not make an appearance."

"Maybe the chief should stop mistreating his goats, and then maybe she would consider"

"Yeah! Tell 'em Phastos!"

Meanwhile, Kaetlyn and Druig are watching this entire exchange and feeding each other snacks as Kaet is sitting on Druig's lap

When Kaetlyn and Sephia left with Druig at Tenochtitlan, they secretly came back and begged Phastos to go with them as they were setting up the community

When Phastos refused, the three promised each other that they would always make sure to keep in contact with one another

Lordy Lord, pray for Ben when he's given the shovel talk by these two girls

Although in the end, they are like the sisters he's never had, and only Phastos is the one who is bothered (not really) by their constant unexpected visits

Modern Times:

When Phastos found Ben and started dating him, Kaetlyn and Sephia fully vetted the poor human

They remembered how broken and devastated their brother was in the aftermath of the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and they were not about to let someone else hurt him

By the way, Kaetlyn and Sephia were the first Eternals to know Phastos was gay since they were the only ones he trusted to come out to

It was the same the other way around too

Phastos was the first one ever to help Sephia really understand her sexuality (demisexual) since she thought something was wrong with her since she had never really felt any sexual attraction like that to anyone ever in the 7,000 years she lived on Earth

She has tried throughout multiple occasions tried to have sex, but it never really worked out and she never felt those feelings associated with sexual attraction

For the longest time, she thought she was asexual until Ikaris turned out not to be dead from the sun, and she’s connected with him on a more emotionally intimate level than ever before, and now she’s feeling all these new feelings that are scaring the crap out of her

There were instances that she felt attraction and even had fantasies over certain fictional characters but she to experience something in her head as a fantasy as opposed to experiencing it in reality was a whole different topic of conversation

And she’s even experienced romantic feelings whenever she tried to put herself in relationships, but those romantic feelings only stayed romantic and she never felt any sexual feelings

So, when those new feelings emerged…a conference call was set up between the STEM Trio and it was a chaos call that was primarily about going over literature of the sexuality spectrum and the fluidity of identification

When Ikaris had trouble wrapping his head around it when Sephia came out to him, he ended up getting a whole explanation on it from Phastos and Kaet over Zoom

But yeah, these three are each other’s ride or die at any point of time

They literally choked down their hatred for this man so that their girl could have the chance to be in a happy relationship

On the plus side, these three always went to Pride together

Druig usually stayed at the Amazon during these events because he’s not a big fan of the crowds and despises the practice of rainbow capitalism

Once gay marriage was legalized, both Kaet and Sephia were the witnesses for Phastos and Ben’s courthouse wedding

Phastos DID try to hide Jack’s adoption…only for Sephia and Kaet to already be in the house when the couple brought him home for the first time and announce themselves as Jack’s godmothers

Their disappointment was imminent and their hearts could only be healed by holding their new godson

It’s just one heart attack after another for Phastos with these two girls around

Ben and Sephia get along so freaking well

They are constantly swapping recipes; Sephia crochets baby clothes and stuffed animals for Jack and Ben sends her the pictures; and whenever Phastos and Ben need a night out or are burned out, Sephia will be right there helping out

Sephia would be the one to tell Jack no matter what, he would always be perfect in her eyes, and teaches him that his differences from others are the things that would also turn into his strengths

Kaet is there bringing the chaos for baby Jack; she’s constantly popping her head into view when he least expects it and makes the sweetest giggles in the universe

One time, Phastos caught Kaet’s shadows tossing Jack in the air with him laughing without a care in world…he fainted

But Ben thought it was cute though so he was cool with it

But Kaet would also be the one to teach Jack the importance of staying true to yourself regardless of the pressure of whatever society may force upon him, and always encourages him to think like a mad genius

Seeing Phastos with his family gave Kaet the little push that made her realize that she really wants to start a family with Druig as well as helping her gain hope for humanity by just being around Ben and Jack

It had always been on the back of her mind, she always liked kids

But she had lost so much faith in humanity and the world around her that she was always putting it off

When she and Druig were pregnant, Kaet immediately set up a conference call with Sephia and Phastos to tell them before the rest of the eternals

When the twins (Laoise and Aisling) were born, Kaet asked Sephia and Phastos if they were willing to be the godparents (along with Makkari and Gilgamesh)

Phastos cried just as hard holding his baby goddaughters for the first time as he did when he first held baby Jack, and cried again when he held his godson a few years later

Phastos also became the godfather for Sephia’s and Ikaris’ kids (he also cried when he held all of their kids)

BTW remember Ikaris' drugged out confession from above?

You can bet your entire life savings that Phastos made sure to record every single glorious second of it and then played it Ikaris’ and Sephia’s wedding as part of his toast

Ikaris’ face turned so fucking red and he just wanted to DIE

Sephia thought it was super cute and funny and reassured him that he is the only one who has seen her boobs like that

There’s someone for everyone lol

Also, Phastos was the one to walk Sephia down the aisle since she looks up to him like he’s her tech-savvy older brother who will always teach her how to use her computer because she is terrible with tech

STEM trio became the STEM Parent Trio

When they get together, they trade gossip whilst sipping wine and watching Bluey and playing that fantasy game when you create a map using rice whilst cuddling with their Squishmallows

One-time all three got so plastered, they designed a whole-ass utopian city with modern technology whilst also being environmentally friendly and also filled with magic and affordable healthcare and reusable energy

Muffin reminds Phastos too much of Kaetlyn back in the old days and he straight up got a war flashback in “Faceytalk” and “The Sleepover”

All that being said and done, despite all the headaches and near heart attacks, there isn’t anything in the world Phastos would trade for Kaetlyn and Sephia; he loves his two crazy sisters more than anything

Whenever Halloween came, it became a tradition that Kaetlyn and Druig would go to Chicago so that Laoise and Aisling would go trick-or-treating with Jack

One year Aisling went as Silena Beauregard, Jack as Charles Beckendorf, and Laoise as Clarisse La Rue from Percy Jackson

Phastos made the lightning staff for Laoise to complete her costume

That was a mistake to say the least

But that’s a story for another time

Eternals Film Review: This is NOT your diversity darling

So I saw Marvel’s Eternals yesterday. It’s a week late, but I honestly didn’t think I would see it at all considering I just haven’t been as on top of Marvel products lately, nor have they impressed me much. But a friend wanted to see it for her birthday, and I figured that, worst case scenario, I’d at least get to enjoy some nachos in the movie theater’s comfy new recliners while a mediocre movie played in the background.

I was wrong, in the worst possible way.

I want to start this off by saying that I went in knowing that the Eternals, as a comic book group, has anti indigenous sentiment in it, and by this point I’ve seen all the “Marvel made a gay black man responsible for Hiroshima” memes. I went in thinking I knew the levels of racist it would be, and tried to brace myself accordingly. I grew up a half Mexican half Salvadoran mestiza, by this point I’m used to racism against my ancestors and my people getting swept under the rug. I figured I could sit through those scenes and make it to the end of the film still pretending I had a good time. I was not, in fact, prepared for what I ended up seeing.

Marvel’s Eternals is a racist, sexist, and ableist film hiding behind “diverse casting”. Let me count the ways.

the anti indigenous stuff is so much worse than I originally thought. Before watching the film, my friends and I discussed its origins in the comics, how it might be changed in the film, and whether or not it’s even possible to extract it from their story. Well, turns out we debated for nothing, because they didn’t even try. We see the ancient Aztecs being massacred while the Eternals stand by and debate the ethics of getting involved. The slaughter of my ancestors is used as background noise for the Eternals’ personal drama. Druig, the Eternal capable of mind control, argues to use his powers to make the Spaniards stop. I remember thinking “ok, a bit white savior-y, but I like him for that.” And then he proceeds to mind control the Spaniards AND the Aztecs to end the scene. It’s haunting, seeing him do that. But he’s not done there! When the others catch up to him in modern times, he’s in an indigenous village in the Amazon, essentially playing god, using his mind control to act through them and speak through them. It’s heavily implied he, a white man, is treated as a god. When the Deviants show up, he essentially uses them as red shirts to fight them. He has to be told by others not to risk these people’s lives without their consent.

As someone who briefly dabbled with the idea of becoming an anthropologist in college, I learned that the Middle East is THE place to go for archeology and anthropology. The real world reason for this is because this is where different ancient human groups met up, traded, and procreated with each other. It’s regarded as the place where human civilization was able to spread and grow. In the film, however, this is rewritten as the spot where the Eternals first landed on Earth. Not only do we SEE them create all human inventions, we see them DEBATE whether the people there, the ancient Arabic people, are ready for certain inventions (according to the Eternals, they weren’t ready for the steam engine, but they might be able to manage a gardening plow). We get a scene where one of the Eternals, Makkari, is trading with and stealing from these people, and the ancient Arabic men in particular are, in that scene, portrayed as violent and as swindlers specifically to push the romance between Makkari and Druig. This scene is part a few that imply that the empire of Babylon was successful specifically due to the Eternals’ involvement.  When the Eternals return to Iraq in the modern day, we see that Makkari has been hoarding archeological findings in their spaceship.

In case you haven’t seen the Hiroshima memes (just typing that makes me sick), Phastos, the gay black Eternal primarily responsible for human technological advancement, feels personally responsible for Hiroshima. How it’s shown in the movie is Phastos and Ajak, sharply dressed, are walking among the ruins after the atomic bomb is dropped. Phastos cries and, while kneeling among the ashes of innocent Japanese civilians, says “humanity isn’t worth saving”. Maybe it wasn’t meant this way, but you can’t help but feel like the innocent people that were wiped out are being put in the same category as the white imperialists who just wiped them out.

Gemma Chan’s character, Sersi, is a tradfem fantasy. Now, before you assume I mean “all feminine characters exist for male consumption”, no, that’s not what I mean. I love when the female lead is allowed to be deep AND strong AND sensitive AND feminine. I have fought tooth and nail for feminine woman characters to be given the respect they deserve. But that’s not what Sersi is. While I’m not saying you can’t like, or love, or even feel represented by her character, you cannot deny she lacks serious depth. The entire establishment of her character is done through the eyes of the white men that are in love with her. They fall for her while watching her serve, and give, and do stereotypically feminine things, NOT through talking to her and getting to know her. We never see why SHE loves THEM, we just assume that, well, he’s an impressive masculine specimen, so why shouldn’t she fall in love with him, right? When Ajak dies, she chooses Sersi to succeed her as leader of the Eternals, but we never get a reason WHY. I don’t even think we see them have so much as a proper conversation, but we’re meant to assume Ajak just felt that Sersi was “good” and “kind” enough to be the leader, NOT that she felt Sersi would be a competent leader. Sersi’s entire motivations throughout the movie are “I love these two men” and “humanity dying is bad”. We don’t see her have any desires or needs outside of that.

All of the women of color are either fridged by an awful white man (Ajak) or in love with an awful white man (Sersi and Makkari). As a Mexican woman, seeing one Mexican woman get killed mercilessly and another Mexican woman fall in love with a man who treats the indigenous people of Latin America as little more than police dogs was disturbing on a whole other level.

Now to the ableism. I don’t want to speak too much on how they used the actress for Makkari, Lauren Ridloff’s, deafness in the movie, as I’m not deaf myself, but I’ll lay it out and let you come to your own conclusion: the character is also deaf, and sign language is used in the movie. It’s stated in the movie that she can sense all vibrations in the world, including people’s vocal cord movements, so she can “feel” what others are saying rather than hear. Sometimes the other Eternals use sign language with her, sometimes they don’t, either implying she reads their lips or can “feel” what they’re saying.

What I DO feel comfortable talking about, as someone with various mental illnesses and disorders, is how they handled Thena, Angelina Jolie’s character. Early on in the film (during the genocide scene, actually), she gets a psychological condition that only Celestials get that causes her to lose touch with reality. Despite the fact that the in-world explanation for it is simply that she’s remembering past lives, it causes her to be violent with her fellow Eternals, resulting in her being given the option to either be killed or have her memories wiped, thus erasing who she has come to be as a person. This reeks of real world eugenics as well as the stereotype that the mentally ill are inherently violent. Gilgamesh, the most physically strong of the Eternals, offers to be her caretaker, and they live in complete isolation for thousands of years. When the others meet up with them in modern day, we get a scene straight out of an ableist horror movie, with Thena sitting under a tree, surrounded by bones and scribbling creepy drawings. Once the existence of their past lives is revealed, her psychological disorder is used solely as a plot device and then just.....vanishes.

I honestly had to stop myself from leaving the the theater several times throughout the film. It was infuriating, it was disgusting, and it was PAINFUL. None of what I just wrote can be swept under the rug or circumvented by the color blind casting. Making Ajak a Mexican woman doesn’t make her advocating for letting my ancestors get slaughtered any less awful, it just makes Ikarus killing her that much more uncomfortable.

Usually when I leave a movie, even if I didn’t like it, I love to come onto Tumblr and Twitter to see what people think and what they took from it. But for the first time, I can’t bring myself to see people praise this film for false diversity, or stan a ship that makes my stomach turn, or make photosets of how beautiful a character that’s seeped in harmful tropes is.

The Eternals is not a good movie. Not only do I not recommend it, but I sincerely hope it flops so bad that Marvel gives up on a sequel. Another film with this group should not be made.

The chemistry between Richard Madden and Gemma Chan in Eternals was so easy thanks to their decades-long friendship. During her Elle interview, Zhao said, “The two of them knew each other for so long, and it’s great to know that, in the conception of this romance, those two have got their own thing going.”

“[Sersi and Ikaris] don’t always tell the rest of the family where they’re going. Sometimes they disappear. They’re the lovers of the family. They’ve got their canyon, and no one else knew that space existed,” the Eternals director said. “So, for Gemma and Richard to have shared a life that we don’t always know what it is, the camera doesn’t lie. It’s there, and they feel safe with each other.”

Zhao added, “And beyond that, Sersi and Ikaris aren’t just lovers; they’re soulmates. Sersi is in love with someone else in present day, but it does not mean her love for Ikaris stops. So their friendship is actually equally as important as the romantic chemistry.”

I didn't like it.

I think it wasn't well written, it felt forced and it was boring sometimes.

I didn't like how they treated Thena's character at all.

The (only) good things about the movie are:

The 2 Druig and Makkari scenes (serioulsy, why we kept so many time with Ikaris and Sersi when Druig and Makkari have so much more chemistry and are way better and interisting than the other two).

The best characters were Gilgamesh and Karun.

Anyway just remember this is my opinion, and not some universal truth.

MCU: we’re making Makkari a woman and ignoring the long relationship Makkari and Sersi had. Instead, we’re gonna make that a relationship Sersi has with Ikaris. We could’ve chosen to have two LGBT interracial couples in our movie but, ya know, one is enough in our book! Especially when we don’t actually have to focus on the one too much, its more background since the one guy is human and won’t be directly involved in the action. Oh and we’re completely rewriting Ikaris’ character to make him the villain instead of the actual villain of the comics, Druig, who proudly professes he’s a traitor regularly. We’re just gonna swap their entire personalities and pretend like Ikaris never had a human wife and child or that he devotes his entire being to protecting humans. Cause we’re such brilliant writers!!!
