i knew percy jackson was superior to harry potter when both series introduced a love triangle in the last second book to cause angst between the main pairing and how both authors handled it so differently.
we had jkr, who turned lavender into a joke and mocked her interests and whole character, looked down upon her for being a teenager with a crush just to uplift hermione as the better love interest for ron and handled the whole triangle with very obvious misogynistic undertones to show why hermione is superior to the other woman™.
and then we had rick, who treated rachel with respect and gave her a likable personality and goals and interests of her own, had percy and rachel develop a genuine friendship and even gave rachel some iconic moments to shine on her own, never bashed rachel to uplift annabeth and most importantly concluded the love triangle with annabeth and rachel becoming friends and letting go of their past beef.

There are many things that frustrate me with the writing of Annabeth in the PJO TV Show, but I think one thing that I haven’t seen people talk much about is the mini-arc of Percy needing to help Annabeth with her sense of fun/humanity.
Just so we’re clear, I absolutely hate this arc.
Prior to the show’s premiere, I believe there was a quote from Rick discussing new-ish things that we’d see in the show, and one of those things was Percy helping Annabeth “tap into her humanity”. I can’t find the exact quote, but it should be on the series update Twitter account if you search it.
When I first read this quote, I wasn’t exactly sure what it meant, but I thought maybe we’d get an expansion of the theme of forgiveness that we got in the original books, or maybe we’d get an arc about Annabeth’s pride and how that gets in the way of her relationships with others. Or maybe they’d try and break down the ways in which Annabeth helps to uphold the gods’ ways of doing things, and align her more with the mortal point of view (which they essentially did, but not the overall point).
What I certainly wasn’t expecting was for them to strip Annabeth of most, if not, all of her smaller/softer traits, and give her this unusually stoic and stiff personality, where she suddenly has no familiarity with casual aspects of the mortal world (movies, Disney world, common idioms), and needs Percy to introduce these concepts to her in an effort to “unlock” her humanity.
What.
The.
Fuck.
Words cannot emphasize enough how much I despise this arc. Not only is it entirely nonsensical for Annabeth not to be familiar with these things (she was with her dad at least until the age of 7 and she goes to a camp full of other children who are regularly in contact with the mortal world; do you seriously expect me to believe that at no point in her 12 years of life, she never saw a single film, heard of Disneyworld, or heard common idioms and slang terms from her camp-mates? Seriously???)
But ALSO!
Book!Annabeth had PLENTY of humanity to go around! Even with her pride and initial coldness towards Percy, she plays hackeysack with him and Grover on the first day of their quest! She has a cute silly crush/admiration/infatuation on Luke. She nerds out big time over the St. Louis Arch! She’s the first to steal clothing from Waterland! She screams and cries when she encounters the mechanical spiders! She has an expression of sadness when she shares her backstory about Thalia and Luke! She gets lost in her little construction game at the Lotus, so much so that Percy has to use her phobia to pull her out of the trance! She grabs Percy’s hand when they first enter the Underworld because she’s scared! She tears up when it’s time to leave Cerberus!
And you stripped her of all these things, because you’re so desperate to overemphasize the Percabeth romance, and you felt that it was absolutely necessary to have Percy educate Annabeth on “unlocking humanity”??? Why!!!!
Not only did Book!Percy help Annabeth discuss things about bad parents and approaching forgiveness, but Book!Percy already had something important to offer Annabeth: loyalty, trustworthiness, and reliability. You didn’t need to take away her already-present traits and wits to convince us that Percy was the type of person she needed in her life, because we can already see what he offers her in the books. So why oh why did you feel the need to give us the silly “tap into your humanity” arc? Why did you turn her personality into something that it wasn’t? Why did you take away her depth just so her character could better serve Percabeth?
I don’t even necessarily agree with the criticism that this version of Annabeth feels like it prioritizes Percabeth more, but I can see why people made that complaint. Y’all took away so much of what made this character endearing, because you felt like it was a much bigger priority to have Percy help her unlock humanity than to let her be human prior to meeting him and outside of him. Not only does her personality get shafted, but her relationships with other people get shafted too! Her interactions with Luke are affection-less, she sent Grover off on his own in the Lotus so she could go off with Percy, and I don’t even think that she and Chiron interacted once this season; I don’t even think she mentioned the part about her calling him to come pick her up after she attempted living at home again!
But don’t worry; we’ll get plenty of scenes doubling down and tripling down on how Percy is the center of her world now! Yay!

I don't know dude, but the more I read about Percabeth actually being in a relationship, the less I like them together. The fact that Percy constantly seems just at ease and like he can be himself with no worries while being with Rachel and Nico, but when he is with Annabeth he constantly tries to act like "the perfect boyfriend" he thinks he should be + Annabeth so casually saying lines like "I only attack my boyfriend like that" makes me give them a bombastic side eye (criminal offensive) not gonna lie. Think I like them better separately.

Percy is the only pure anti hero in the whole Percy Jackson series. Hear me out. I know you will say Nico is an anti hero but Nico actually has a classic hero streak inside if you think about it. Just because he was blinded by revenge for a while does not mean his sole motivation in the books was that. Afterwise, he actually thrived to be a hero and did things to save the world, to be a hero. Remember the last book in PJO.
There is not one single action Percy did in the entire saga that was done because he wanted to be a hero rather than to protect his loved ones. He did not question if what he is doing is right before doing it but questioned whether it helped his loved ones. He did not have the want to be accepted by his parent like others.
That is one of the reasons I love Percy.

Percico thoughts:
Nico frustrated at Percy: Percy I know loyalty is your fatal flaw, but have you ever stopped to consider what you actually want? Not what everyone else wants for you?
Percy confused: What do you mean?
Nico yelling at this point: What do you want Percy? What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about what you want out of your life? Not what the gods want for you, or Chrion, or your mom, or fucking Annabeth!
Nico: What do YOU WANT?
Percy says the first thing that comes out of his mouth without thinking: You.
Nico confused: What?
Percy as if a dam has finally broken and water has finally rushed out with all of his unspoken words and feelings: I want you, and a apartment in New York. I want to make you blue chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast just like my mom makes me. And I want to show you Montauk beach where my mom took me all the time as a kid. Where she met my dad. And I don't want to be a hero anymore, or go on anymore stupid dangerous quests where the people I care about die! I want to go swimming for as long as I want and sleep on the beach and not have to worry about a monster attacking me. I don't want to go to college in New Rome with Annabeth where I have to struggle again with school and everything! I want you in my bed everyday, morning and night. I want everything in our apartment to be blue. But I'll also let you pick some spaces for color if you want because it be ours. I want everyone to stop calling me stupid or thinking all my worth is that I'm this big hero of prophecy, or part of the golden camp half blood couple with Annabeth. I want to have dates with you in our apartment playing video games or watching movies while we eat McDonald's. I want to be normal. But I also want you there. Even if normal is not what you want and you want me to live in the underworld with you. I just want you besides me. In whatever way you can have me. Because I do want you Nico.
Percy finally finished, breaths hard as if he's run a marathon. Still staring at Nico.
Nico worried: Are you ok.
Percy: I don't know.
Nico nervous goes to hug Percy: I don't usually do this. But you need it.
Percy hugs Nico back hard.
Nico whispers into Percy's ear: I want you too.
Percy smiles and kisses Nico on the lips.
(Don't like don't read. Post hate and I'll block you)

Annabeth Chase:
Is constantly insulting Percy in a way that feels like a cishet person's idea of flirting and that to normal people is more sibling bickering than anything else
Had a 'crush' on the guy who basically raised her since she was 7 that was based off nothing but him being the camp heartthorb and an unachivable older guy
Who she in the last book of the first series explicitly stated was like a brother to her but that she never loved romantically with the implication being that she was just confused from lack of experience with romance due to her young age at the time
And the only other guy she's ever shown interest in-Including even just calling him attractive-is her childhood best friend who everyone has been insisting she's been in love with since she was 12 and that she's destined to be with him without ever actually asking either of them what they wanted
Which was validated by the same 'love goddess' who told Reyna no demigod would heal her heart in a flashback in the same book where she has more chemistry with Thalia than she did with any guy she'd ever interacted with
Instantly liked Piper for the same reasons she antagonizes Percy
Is totally a lesbian guys

Say what you want about Percy/Nico fans, but they have at least one thing going for them.
When Nico saw Percy at his scariest (decimating his father's army, defeating Hades and pinning Hades down with his leg and sword) Nico was stunned. Speechless. Not scared at all. One could even conclude that it was a massive gay moment for him.
When Annabeth saw Percy at his scariest (defending himself and Annabeth from Akhlys and trying to kill Akhlys) she was terrified of him. She cried. She begged him to promise her not to use that power (that just saved their lives) ever again.
If you don't love Percy at his worst (fighting and attempting to kill gods to protect you), then you don't deserve him at all.

The Judo Flip Scene; The Scene that Divided the Percy Jackson Fandom: What Went Wrong?
Annabeth grabbed his wrist and flipped him over her shoulder. He slammed into the stone pavement. Romans cried out. Some surged forward, but Reyna shouted, “Hold! Stand down!”
Annabeth put her knee on Percy’s chest. She pushed her forearm against his throat. She didn’t care what the Romans thought. A white-hot lump of anger expanded in her chest—a tumor of worry and bitterness that she’d been carrying around since last autumn.
“If you ever leave me again,” she said, her eyes stinging, “I swear to all the gods—”
Percy had the nerve to laugh. Suddenly the lump of heated emotions melted inside Annabeth.
“Consider me warned,” Percy said. “I missed you, too.
-Mark of Athena
This scene is one of the, if not most, controversial scenes in the entirety of Rick Riordan's books. It has caused many fans to go deep into the morality of the scene--into the question of boundaries, whether it is just a good boundaries into Percy and Annabeth's relationships or just abusive behaviour. In this post, I will talk about my opinion on, 'What went wrong?'
First, let us dissect this scene, shall we? We have Annabeth, who has lost her only proof of permanence for six months. The guy she was dreading would die for five years before she thought they had their happy ending was suddenly snatched in a time where she thought life couldn't get any better. During this time;
she saw jason falling in love with piper and was stressed that percy would be doing the same without her
she was stressed percy would never even remember her.
she canonically spent hundreds and thousands of drachmas (and probably time too) on iris messaging every monster and god she could just so that she could find him
she spent a WHOLE lot of energy on this.
she was probably advised by people in camp to find another guy, probably got these comments regularly
she was also troubled by athena's roman form to find athena parthenos statue and ditch finding percy, which must have been hard to handle
she was in charge of helping build a WHOLE WAR SHIP
she was also in charge of rebuilding the home of the gods
And you know what? It makes sense that she would have all of these emotions buried inside her. It makes sense that she would be angry, stressed, and depressed and that she would bury all of this inside. "During their separation, something had happened to Annabeth’s feelings. They’d grown painfully intense—like she’d been forced to withdraw from a life-saving medication. Now she wasn’t sure which was more excruciating—living with that horrible absence, or being with him again" Yep, homegirl was going through some stuff.
Though we don't know what his thoughts were on his point of view, from the fact that he laughs and never brings it up later, we can conclude that Rick wanted us to know that he didn't care, and that these interactions are common between both of them, though one could argue that isn't really reliable.
So; Annabeth having an outburst of emotions is a completely normal reaction, judging the amount of things she has gone through, even though it isn't the right way to express her feelings. But, why is the judo flip scene actually bad? Why did it give even percabeth shippers the ick?
The Way Rick Wrote It: Rick treated the scene as if it was funny, Annabeth was such a girly girlboss who did it to keep Percy in his place. "I only judoflip my boyfriend". And people were mad. Mad that girls are portrayed to be girlbosses by making them violent. Mad that this violence was against a guy who was implied to be abused in his childhood.
My Argument: This scene was written in a time where media with violent comedy was popular among kids (tom and jerry, oggy and the cockroaches, i see you), and that it aged badly. Another important thing: a lot of the fandom also thought of it as percabeth's most romantic moments, and hyped it up so much, which contributes towards the whole ick of the scene.
My Argument: One thing to take into account was that the romans were really on guard when the greeks arrived. they were scared it was going to be an ambush. so when annabeth judoflips percy, their nerves took over. i fully believe the humor of 'i only judoflip my bf' was just their way of diffusing a potentially dangerous situation of misunderstanding.
But in the end I do agree, the way this was written was a major disservice to the feelings that Annabeth was experiencing that time. Rick failed to portray that scene as an exhausted traumatised teenager having an unhealthy outburst of emotions, which is what it really was. Instead, he tried to make it a funny type of scene, and the fandom carried it forward by hyping the scene up as if it was one of percabeth's most romantic moments, and even though the intentions were good, he failed to convey the meaning behind what they said properly.
So now that we've answered the question this post was made for, I'd like to end this post with a positive note. I'd like to point out that in cotg, there is no moment that annabeth physically hurted (hurted is too much of an overstatement) percy if you think about it, which shows that she has improved. If you want proof, I searched any time where Annabeth teased percy physically when he said something 'stupid' and what I found was 'nudged me with her toe' and 'lightly pinched me'. So, even though Rick messed up in writing that one scene more than ten years ago, it's safe to say he has improved.

Percy really could have dated a rich, pretty, fun, artistic girl who he feels comfortable with or the son of one of the greatest gods who is kind, smart and probably the strongest demigod of this era + sees him as the greatest thing since sliced brad, and yet he decided to date a girl who hits him, insults him and thinks he is an idiot huh?

For the Percy Jackson Fandom, Annabeth is the Lois Lane to her Superman. The Mary Jane to her Peter Parker. The Juliet to her Romeo. Iris to her Barry. Padme to her Anakin. A feminine version of Patroclus to her Achilles.
They literally can't stand different opinions because Percabeth, like the other couples I mentioned here, belong together and that's final! If someone doesn't see this way, so the problem is the person...not them.
