Still Salty About the Flanderization of Steven

Many SU fans have had to see these memes and are probably tired of them. I really hate the way people who have never even watched the show and probably just LO’s video flanderize Steven into a bumbling wimp or take scenes like him crying about wanting to be friends with Connie or trying to talk down Spinel out of context. People hate him for not killing his enemies on sight and act as if all he does is talk no jitsu. People act as if he’d die trying to redeem Big Jack Horner from Puss in Boots even though he’s met villains like Jack with Aquamarine and Eyeball and not only did he kick their asses but accepted that they were beyond help. Steven prefers to talk over fighting but isn’t stupid and knows when he has to get serious. Even during his “I can make a change” song that’s twisted out of context, he was still fighting defensively against Spinel. He just wasn’t fighting to kill. As for the meme above, did the creator watch Alien Force? The way Ben handled the Dragon, Reiny and the Highbreed would be pretty similar to how Steven would. The idealistic hero who teaches violence isn’t always the answer has already been done so why does Steven get the most hate for it?

I reblogged a post about this but I really am tired of how TOH is propped up as the anti SU when Dana is friends with Rebecca and praised the groundbreaking work Rupphire did. The Owl House crew doesn’t hate SU and wasn’t doing a “take that” by killing its villain or claiming not everyone can be talked down with a hug. They’re two different shows with different stories and themes. Steven would also know that some like Belos can’t be redeemed and he didn’t actually redeem the diamonds. He didn’t like them and acts uncomfortable around them in Future but he needed them to cure the corrupted gems. The point of the diamonds as well as Andy was not that you have to accept bigoted family members but a wish fulfillment where queer people could get their families to accept them. I saw this on Reddit but I think Steven gets so much hate because he teaches the idea that retributive violence isn’t always the solution and because he got a good life with a loving family, girlfriend and adoration of everyone without being a self centered sexist asshole. Internet Dudebros hate the character who showed healthy emotion, treats Connie as an equal and taught stuff like acceptance, boundaries and kindness, as they hate the idea that they don’t have any of that because of how bigoted, self absorbed or toxic they are.

stev1nel as a ship is gross for obvious reasons but honestly? i can't even see steven and spinel being FRIENDS. spinel said herself in the movie that she blew her chances at being friends with steven. and in future steven is very clearly uncomfortable around spinel. like..

look at how angry he looks here. and his "spinel what is wrong with you".. he's in no mood for spinel's messing around. sure he may have helped her but that doesn't mean he has to like her.

all that just adds to why stev1nel is an awful ship. even IF you take away the fact that steven is 16 and spinel is thousands of years old its still more toxic than a vat of acid

It's very strange to me as an actual autistic adult that c//a and SPOP stans will justify Catra's actions for being disabled (BPD or autistic mostly), despite her not actually being confirmed as such, but they'll find jokes related to an actual autistic adult being put on a leash

Yeah, like, I totally respect people who headcanon her as autistic and/or having BPD, especially if they personally relate to her... but it's also so hypocritical the way stans treat not only Entrapta but any other neurodivergent coded character. I've seen people headcanon Adora having ADHD (which I support!) but she's always seen as stupid and oblivious. Kyle is clearly not neurotypical IMO but he's never taken seriously either. Wrong Hordak then is a walking joke even though he's a victim of a cult.

Not to mention I've seen stans being ableist towards psychosis, even though that is a BPD symptom (and it's present in many other diagnoses!). Like sometimes I genuinely think some people who preach BPD Catra out there don't even have BPD. And something tells me they wouldn't even like real people with BPD lmao.

It’s funny how in the Steven Universe fandom I’ve seen the take that “you can’t ship StevenXSpinel because Spinel acts like a child” and ALSO “you can’t ship Steven X Spinel because Spinel is 1000 years old!”. Like make up your minds lmao. The first one is hilarious for obvious reasons, but the second one is pretty funny too. Don’t antis usually have the opposite reasoning? That you can’t ship the 1000 year old loli with adults because they’re actually a child? It’s almost like their logic changes based on who they want to harass.

Anyways although personally I prefer the platonic trauma-buddy version, all Spinel X Steven ships are super adorable and I wish everybody who ships them a great day.

I dont like stevinel

Mainly because…they’re just not compatible. Their fans either reduce Steven to a manic pixie dream boy for spinel, or reduce it to “fuck pink diamond”(which is the basis for all her ships). When in canon, Steven barely tolerates Spinel because she’s a nuseance who completely blows off his feelings and makes everything about her.

Not to mention, Spinels just a shitty person overall. She was designed to be a toxic friend, but because of her backstory, everyone was willing to excuse her behavior. She acts like a prey, but she’s actually a predator.

After seeing this post, I can’t help but compare these two. Both are toxic, fucked up people who had a tragic backstory and decided to take their pain out on the world. Both blamed the main character for their suffering, tried to kill them and destroy everything they cared about and left them with more trauma and trust issues. Both got off fairly easy, although we didn’t see what happened to Harumi. I do want redemption for her but it needs to be better than Crystalized. Ironically the SU fandom woobifies Spinel to make Pink/Rose look worse while much of the Ninjago fandom hates Harumi. I actually like Harumi as a villain but I hate Spinel. I can understand Llorumi shippers a bit more, even if I no longer agree with it and don’t mind it as long as it’s done well, but I’m disgusted with Stevinel shippers especially when they trash Connie and make her into a toxic girlfriend.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 65 Review - Heart To Heart With The Enemy

*Gasp* Liko and Amethio actually escaped the cave on-screen. The writers are actually not shoving everything into off-screen land this time around! Other than that, this episode was filled with surprise twists and intriguing lore that you can’t help but to wonder what’s going to happen next! 

The Liko and Amethio portions are nice because, like Liko, we finally get to know more about Amethio. It’s crazy how he appeared since the beginning and we only learn of his motives and goals 65 episodes in. He wants to get Rayquaza and Terapagos because he wants to be helpful to his grandfather Gibeon and wants him to be proud of him. It feels like an honor thing. Amethio, despite being a villain, does have kindness dwelling within him. If he wasn’t a kind person, Ceruledge wouldn’t have tried to warm its trainer with one of its blade after seeing Floragato try to get some grass for Liko. If Amethio wasn’t kind, he wouldn’t have cooperated with Liko in order to escape the cave, but he did. It’s nice that Liko knows that Amethio isn’t as bad as he appears to be. I really liked their heart-to-heart conversation. The fact that Amethio motivated Liko to not be so down over her failing her Implementation test is something; Liko didn’t even ask Grusha for a possible rematch as she knew there could be other ways she can master Terastal. Sometimes, the most unexpected person and words can be your biggest motivation.

Poor Amethio, the moment he becomes nice to Liko is when Spinel frames him for cooperation against the enemy and that’s when he gets kicked out of the Explorers. I’m assuming a simple act of kindness or cooperation with the enemy is something Gibeon despises? I wonder if something happened to him in the past for him to abandon his own grandson over something miniscule. I’m assuming that’s what happened to Amethio’s father too? Gibeon seems like a cruel person for believing in a fabricated video and not asking Amethio for a concrete answer. People are speculating that Amethio might be going through an anti-hero route akin to Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airibender. While I can see an anti-hero route, I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to Zuko as the circumstances of their turn is different. Zuko is a blueprint for antihero stories, but he doesn’t need to be the pathway.

For the Roy and Dot portions, I’m glad that the kids are sharp enough to realize that Sidian and Coral are deliberately stalling them because they’re targeting Liko. However, what they didn’t expect was that they’re super good at stalling that whatever plan they come up with, the Explorers counter it. People might get angry over the battle, but it’s because the kids aren’t battling seriously. They’re being hasty because Liko is their priority and not the battle. Fortunately, the battle gets called off once Grusha enters the scene as he got a call from Friede about the situation; Friede called him because he knew he wouldn’t get there in time and would need some extra help. I wonder why Grusha mellowed out in this episode compared to how stern he was two episodes ago. Also, I wonder what his Altaria’s beak is made of because it pecked the heck out of that boulder and Flying moves aren’t effective against Rocks.

I do like that Amethio’s words about not giving up has impacted her in a way that she even asked Roy and Dot to go to the Highest Peak with her. Usually, Liko is so passive and the other two seemed okay with not going now that they found Liko and she’s safe, but she still wanted to go. It’s nice that Liko is being a bit more assertive now. I hope to see this more in future episodes.

Also, Terapagos’s anger towards Amethios seems to be more that he reminded him of Gibeon and possibly mistook him for his grandfather, before realizing that they’re different. The way Amethio mentioned his grandfather Gibeon is when Terapagos got another upset reaction. The turtle definitely has beef with Gibeon and it could be a factor to why Gibeon was unusually cruel to Amethio in this episode.

With the announcement of the fourth arc starting in October 11, this means that this arc has three more episodes until then. I honestly can’t wait to see what this new arc has in store as the DLC characters are shown in the key visual. Though, I am a little upset that Arven didn’t show up at all in this arc and it seems that Kieran is going to get that same treatment seeing how he’s not in the poster while his sister Carmine is. What are you thoughts on this episode? By the way, I support Spinel’s rights, wrongs and future beatings.
