Something I find really hilarious about the Targaryens is that in the grand scheme of things, their entire dynasty is a tini tiny blip in the history of Westeros. Westeros and some of the ancient houses in it are far, far older—thousands of years older—and have survived a very long time ruling/living in Westeros. But the Targaryens? They only lasted about 300 years before they killed themselves. It’s like looking back at a childhood phase and going, “huh, that was weird, right?”

my hot take from hotd is that people getting mad that "the asoiaf prophecy wasn't fulfilled" and that the show writers are "throwing it in their face" are dumb actually
like i love me some targaryens as much as the next person they're incredibly interesting as characters but bruh they're not heroes and most of them aren't good people. they're not magically destined to save the whole world - the majority of targaryen kings historically sucked ass as tyrants and warmongers. they're incestuous creeps. i giggle and clap and kick my little feet reading about them and seeing them on screen but idk i feel like the idea aegon saw himself as this divine conqueror set to save the world with his inbred lineage is hubris not prophecy. typically when we get prophecies in the asoiaf books they are not fulfilled, or they are fulfilled in unexpected ways. we see people destroy their whole lives and cause ruin and pain to other people because of their obsession with being the prophecised heroes (rhaegar and stannis being the biggest examples).
targaryen restoration is not meant to be a good thing in asoiaf. the fact a grossly inbred family ruled for 300 years culminating in one of them trying to blow up his entire capital city in the midst of a civil war caused by him burning people alive is not a ringing endorsement for the targaryens no matter how good of a person dany is. i agree that the last 2 seasons of got were awful but it's not JUST because the targaryen restoration didn't happen (and I sincerely hope it doesn't if the books ever finish - whether dany goes mad queen or not for me it can honestly go either way and so long as the journey getting there is well written i'll take the ending given to her). there were a lot of factors that made the end to got bad but it did not hinge on the fact the targaryens didn't get a happy ending.

As much as I like that Targaryen phenotype, I must admit how absolutely pathetic Targaryens are without their dragons. Daemon used to get easily defeated by Cole (if we go by the books), Robert Baratheon absolutely demolished Rhaegar. Was there any Targ who was considered the best warrior without a dragon privilege?

Watching House of the Dragon just makes me think Robert Baratheon had a point rebelling (unfortunate he himself did not rule well). This family is more dysfunctional than my Crusader Kings dynasties.
Fascinating and complex people yes, but also really quite terrible.
Also the smallfolk had a point killing their dragons (nukes).

It's so funny when I see a pro-Targ Team Greenie be like "I've notice that a lot Team Green people are anti-Targ and I don't get it? Team Green also are Targaryens!" Oh hun bun: Team Green has the few Targaryens that all of fandom actually understands to be the fascinating fucked-up fail-bots that all members of House Targaryen are. We are just embracing the opportunity to stan the Targs correctly i.e. half ironically and half out of pity.

I will never get over how some people (HBO, GoT writers, general audiences) saw the magical elements of "fire-breathing dragons" and "psychic connection with the wilder version of man's best friend" and went "we'll take the lizards, please." I don't care how hard the direwolves supposedly were to animate or if it was difficult to work with real wolves; they are the more alluring option (to me, ok?!)

one of my favorite things is seeing the pro targaryen posts that are so anti house stark, and then seeing pro stark posts that are anti targaryen. like ?? did we not watch/read the same piece of media ??
they’re both bad, they’re both upholding flawed systems and doing terrible things to keep their positions
i wouldn’t say that either is better than the other tbh, they’re both terrible
(one was just a touch more incest-y, but let’s be real, it’s got)

There's not a day when I won't feel sorry for her. He never deserved her or any of his children. Ironically, he killed Aemma for a son only to eventually gain not just one but three and neglect them. He traumatized a teenage girl for the rest of her life, using her and leaving her in the dust like she wasn't shit.

The more I dwell in the ASOIAF fandom, the more I realise something.
I'm becoming Targaryenphobic.
The Targaryens need to go. All the purebred Inbred, Batshit Crazy, Aryan Coded shits need to go. All of them!
I love the Targ-towers (can talk about Aegon later) but again, no exceptions (I guess except Helaena)
Jon, please resurrect soon and Put Daenerys down. If Young Griff turns out to be Batshit like his dad, aka Ratgar Targaryen then he, unfortunately, needs to go down too.

"I will never be a son."
Viserys made Rhaenyra feel second-rate to an imaginary son all her life growing up, until the one moment he had no choice and made er his heir. Suddenly she herself mattered.
Then he immediately went and took it away, made it conditional on his whims, created several spares that could displace her. He made the initial trauma worse by seemingly repenting only to double down on the message that she herself can never be enough.
It's entirely logical that she would spend the rest of her life both clinging to that title that proves daddy loves her and testing the boundaries to which Viserys will defend her by deliberately flaunting all limitations this title imposes on her life choices. If she gave up that title, even if it would make her both safer and happier in the long term, those imaginary-turned-real sons win and Rhaenyra will truly only be second best forever. And she can't work for it, can't prove herself worthy of it, because that means accepting the title (and his regard) is conditional. She has to have it specifically in spite of every outrageous transgression.
Viserys trapped her in chasing after his love the same way he trapped his children by Alicent into a life of conflict. They exist to put pressure on Rhaenrya as rival spares, and they exist to prove he loves her by choosing her over them at every opportunity. There is no option where they can ever be at peace, ever be safe.
I kind of hate that the show didn't lean into that more. Viserys is such a slithering slime of a father and he deserved the worst.

Cersei Lannister & Rhaenyra Targaryen:
Are forced to marry someone they don’t love, so they find solace in the arms of a family member and commit incest
Seduce members of the Royal Guard
Have their husbands murdered because they didn’t like them
Have three bastard kids
Commit atrocities to claim the Iron Throne
Betray their allies when they feel threatened
Rule with fire and blood
Live in constant paranoia so they murder innocent servants whom they believe will betray them, even if said betrayal would be a direct consequence of the way they treat their subjects
Are hated by the people
and lets us not forget the -

But no, please go ahead and tell me all about how Rhaenyra is this feminist icon who has the divine right to rule over hundreds of thousands of people because her daddy said so, therefore if I don’t support her I’m a misogynist.
