Why I Love Hanamusa

I get this question very frequently but have never given a really in depth, definitive answer. All just kinda implied through my comics and spread out asks. So here's this I guess! Long post ahead:

First, as a Pokémon fan in her mid 20s, I love seeing a ship where the characters are both in their mid/late 20s. Already, they’re much more relatable to me and my current experiences. Most Pokémon ships are between preteens, which can be cute but ultimately don’t interest me as much as they used to when I was a kid myself. Not enough to get super invested in and draw a lot of fanart for anyways haha.

I’ll also start by saying that canon doesn’t always influence whether or not I’ll ship something. I’m much more drawn to potential. Could the characters work together? Do their personalities work together in a nice way? I feel like this so much of fanon is anyways. Especially with queer relationships because they’re rarely depicted in the first place. A lot of the context for these ships is usually up to the fans to piece together or make up in general. And that’s the fun part to me!

Jessie and Delia have only met in the anime a handful of times. Any interaction they’ve had has either been pleasant, or just a typical Team Rocket interaction, with Delia dismissing them/not seeing them as a threat. Already a great jumping off point for me since, truly, they don’t have any actual beef or true, ill feelings towards each other. It’s not TOO out of the realm of possibility for them to potentially fall for each other. “But Jessie chased Delia’s son around trying to steal his Pokémon!” That’s where that dismissive and aloof attitude that Delia has comes into play. I’ll go more into Delia’s whole deal a bit later but I do think this aspect of her personality is a large reason why this ship can work. It’s not that she doesn’t care that Jessie has a bad past, but she can tell that, on the inside, Jessie’s a good person. And, in a scenario where Jessie is trying to become a better person, is forgiving enough to give her a shot. I feel like this is such a solid foundation for a ship. A character who has done wrong but is trying to be better and another character who is willing to help them be better. A classic dynamic!

It’s not just one-sided though; where Jessie is the only one benefitting and learning from the relationship. I believe Delia could get a lot out of being with someone like Jessie. To understand why, I think it’s important to know these characters’ respective backstories.

Jessie is an orphan/foster child who grew up in poverty. Her mother Miyamoto (from The Birth of Mewtwo) was a Team Rocket operative herself, who went on a mission to find Mew. In order to do this, she had to leave Jessie when she was just a toddler. Unfortunately, Miyamoto went MIA on her mission leaving Jessie to more or less fend for herself. Jessie went through life with zero stability, evident by her MANY different careers and constant moving around. It’s implied in the show that she went from foster home to foster home, and later in life tried being an idol, weather girl, florist, wine connoisseur, actress, most notably a nurse and finally a Team Rocket field agent. And even while in Team Rocket, she, James and Meowth were always doing odd jobs to get by. We see that Jessie used to be a sweet kid, and even adult, but the world and her circumstances repeatedly did her dirty, leading her to become the character we know today. Hot tempered, mean, selfish, etc. But despite this, her soft side does still shine through for the people and Pokémon she cares about. She is incredibly loyal.

Delia, unbeknownst to a lot of fans, also had a rough past (see Pocket Monsters: The Animation). Like Jessie, she had a lot of dreams and aspirations like wanting to be a model and even a trainer. But when she was 10, her mother didn’t let her, telling her that she had to stay home and learn to run the family restaurant (she’s an only child). Delia’s father left her and her mother to be a trainer, and never returned. When she was 18, she married Ash’s father and became pregnant shortly after. But right after Ash was born, he also set off to be a Pokémon trainer. And soon after that, her mother passed away, leaving Delia with just the restaurant and baby Ash. This gives so much context to Delia’s attitude in the show. We see that Delia is pained whenever Ash leaves on a journey, but she never shows that pain to anyone. ESPECIALLY Ash. She’s very quick to shoo him off when he shows any sign of wanting to go on another journey and even when he returns home, she acts more excited to see Pikachu than him almost every time. Without all this backstory, it’s easy to just read this as a funny gag, BUT with context, I think it really shows how quickly Delia shuts down and detaches in order to not confront her own feelings. She’s afraid of losing people and getting hurt again.

All that said, I think Jessie and Delia provide each other with EXACTLY what the other needs. 

Aside from becoming rich and famous, Jessie’s biggest aspiration is to get married. In my opinion, this is more so an underlying want for love and stability. There is no one more stable in the show than Delia. Delia’s lived in Pallet her whole life, she’s worked at the same restaurant since she was young and she is always there when Ash comes back home. She has all the love, patience and stability Jessie needs and craves. While forgiving, Delia’s not stupid and can keep Jessie in check. Delia’s also just an angel, which I feel, would make Jessie want to be better. And on top of all this, on more of a surface level, Delia’s a chef and excellent cook. She shows love through cooking and Jessie, who grew up poor, regularly starving and eating snow, happily receives that love. Jessie’s able to live a happy and healthy life with someone like Delia.

Delia, as stated, is very stable. Likely pretty monotonous and solitary, especially living in such a small town like Pallet. This isn’t a bad thing but it’s a little sad when you consider that Delia also had dreams of traveling, being a model and a trainer. She had to give up so many dreams in order to fulfill her duties as a restaurant owner and mother. And even now, when Ash is off on his journey, she feels the need to always be home and be that stable pillar, leaving behind any ambitions she had, thinking it’s too late for her (she’s only 29 btw). But then along comes Jessie, dangerous, passionate, an absolute firecracker. Someone who’s whole life has been about chasing dreams and either, never giving up on them or finding a new dream to chase. Upon learning about Delia’s past aspirations, I could see Jessie pushing her towards them, letting her know that life’s too short and she has nothing to lose from trying. On top of this, Jessie’s also loyal. She, James and Meowth are depicted as doing anything for anyone who gives them food or shows them kindness. Delia does both so there’s no way Jessie would leave her. This fulfills an essential need for Delia, who is afraid of the people in her life leaving her.

There’s so much potential for mutual growth and learning between these two and I adore that. They compliment each other, they help each other and they bring out the best qualities in one another.

I’m not really sure how to end this and I could truly talk about them even more but I don’t want this to be tooooo long haha. OH I could end it with maybe the most funny aspect of this ship that I've brushed over and also what drew me to it in the first place. Jessie. As Ash’s stepmom. THE END.

What is Taskforce Distortion? Taskforce Distortion is a group focused on the protection of the Multiverse. It is ran under multiple divisions; the Rocket Division, the Aqua Division, the Magma Division, the Galactic Division, the Plasma Division, the Skull Division and the (new) Star Division. Our leader keeps their identity hidden for the safety of all involved, however we all run under guidelines set by them.

What is the purpose of each division? The Rocket Division monitors the activity of "Teams" both active and not. This division having access to top of the line security and surveillance systems to monitor such activity. Any unusual activity will be reported to the leader and a plan of dispatch will be acted upon with swiftness. The Aqua and Magma Division share responsibilities of monitoring irregular seismic activity in the current universe's planet, as to not let a catastrophic event similar to that of the Hoenn incident ever happen again. A smaller responsibility is to also monitor the health of the oceans and land to try and fight back pollution and habitat damage. The Galactic Division monitors the Distortion world, keeping an eye on the activity of the Giratina to make sure they do not cause havoc to any universes that reside in said plane of existence. The Plasma Division monitors known pokemon breeders and professional trainers to prevent illegal activity, be it pokemon abuse or inhumane training methods that don't necessarily fall under the league or law's definition of abuse. The Skull Division is our eyes on the ground, sent out to monitor areas of interest along with the Rocket Division. And finally the Star Division, which isn't a full division, as there is only one member, however it is one of the most important additions as it's lead member is a prodigy hacker, allowing us much farther reach than before.

I think it's very likely that we're going to get the scene in the music room before any fights. I think that the big fight is going to be the last one, and that that will be the end.

I do admire everyone's optimism about Sand and Ray though, even if I can't share it.

I think we were all pretty devastated. However, I do still keep the faith that we will see Ray and Sand endgame eventually, they're just putting us through the absolute wringer to get there. Don't get me wrong, I do personally enjoy a bit of angst if it makes the pay off even sweeter. But goddamn, are they hurting me.

Interesting, I actually think it could equally work with the big fight erupting first, and then the music room scene in the subsequent aftermath. With Ray, he has a tendency to explode upfront, then actually act/think more rationally second. But it's anyone's guess as to what order those remaining scenes will take place.

The smile on Ray's face didn't translate as true happiness to me. It felt more like the giddy satisfaction of someone who finally got what they wanted - as if Mew was a trophy or prize that Ray had seen as unattainable. Like the thrill of overcoming the chase had gone very potently straight to his head. He's riding the ultimate high essentially.

But a high is an temporary illusion of joy or bliss. There's the crash that comes shortly after. And I have a feeling we're going to see it creeping in next episode.

Current squinted down into the tidepool, deeper than usual from the rain last night. Something down there shifted, rippling the surface of the water, and he leapt back, fur standing on end. “Sand, I saw something move!” 

Current’s mentor looked up reluctantly from the section of the pool he had been inspecting. “Well, we are looking for trapped fish.”

“That thing is not a fish,” Current hissed, shuddering. The way it writhed… it was uncanny, to say the least. Sand peered over Current’s shoulder, eyes narrowing before lighting up with recognition.

“Ah, that,” he meowed lightly. “That’s an octopus.”

“A what?” 

“An octopus,” Sand repeated, “And a large one at that.”

“I heard you the first time,” Current muttered, trying not to sound too embarrassed over his lack of knowledge. “I mean, what is an 'octopus'? It’s not like any fish or bird I've ever seen.”

Sand cocked his head to one side, looking thoughtful, “you know, I don’t really have a good answer to give you,” Sand admitted. “I guess kind of its own thing.”

Just then, the creature raised a glistening red tentacle from the water. Current took a nervous step back. The thing was eerie. 

"It's good that you're cautious of them," Sand meowed. "Tidechaser says they can give a nasty bite."

"Tidechaser has fought them?" Current mewed unsteadily. He couldn't imagine contending with all those awful tentacles.

"Not fought," Sand corrected, “hunted. He says they’re not bad prey if you can get them on land.”

Current was speechless. What cat in their right mind would want to eat one of those things? He’d always thought Tidechaser was mysterious, but maybe he was just flat out weird. Sand, taking Current’s silence for an invitation to continue the discussion, added, “I don’t think I could eat one myself, though. Pearl told me a story about them one late night on the ship.”

Current barely remembered Pearl. Though he hadn’t been all that young in his mind when the ship wrecked, as moon after moon passed living on the beach, he found his memories from before growing more distant. By now, he had lived here almost as long as not.

“Pearl said that once, a ship’s cat named Octavian had grown tired of his life at sea and abandoned his boat before training a successor.” Sand settled into a sitting position for a long story, his tail wrapping neatly over his white paws. Current twitched an ear to show he was listening to his mentor’s tale. He didn’t really understand it himself, but Dustjump had explained to him once that ship’s cats had a simple but strict code of honor that they all followed, the old cats teaching it to the younger ones at port: never abandon the ship you keep due to hardship, care for any cat aboard the ship like your own littermate, and do not retire until you find or train a younger cat to take your post. 

“Because of Octavian’s selfish actions, the ship he had kept met ruin on its next voyage when the rats got at the grain. Octavian knew what he had done, what the other ship’s cats would think of him, and so he ran, far from shore, far from water, to a place where he could not smell salt on the breeze. When he thought he had run far enough, he slipped inside a crack in a broken rock and waited. That night, the spirits of dead ship’s cats emerged from the tides to track him down for his transgression. They found him easily, but when they tried to drag him back to the sea, he slipped out of their paws, for Octavian was as sly as he was selfish. Suspecting that the ancient ship’s cats would come looking for him, had coated himself in fish oils. Eight times the spirits tracked him, and eight times he slid away from them, until the ninth time, when the fish oil had worn off his fur enough for the spirits to hold him. They dragged him back to the ocean, and on the shore they sentanced him, all the cats speaking as one: 'Because you fled the sea for the earth, we claim the air in your lungs and bind you to the ocean forever more.' In a single heartbeat, Octavian found he could no longer breathe the salty air. 'Because you used your legs to run from us eight times, we take your paws and turn your four legs to eight.' Octavian's paws shriveled away and fell off, and each leg split into two. 'Because you used a fish's oil to escape our grasp, we take your fur and coat you in the slime you stole' Octavian's fur fell out, and his transformation into a monster was complete. And yet, harsh as the spirits were, they respected the cunning mind that had evaded them for so long. Finally, they said 'In acknowledgement of your plan to flee us, we allow you to keep your mind so that you may use it to find a way to survive beneath the waves.' The spirits then dragged him down into the depths of the ocean where he would dwell forevermore, and so the first octopus was born.” Sand finished his story with a flourish of his tail directed at the disgusting creature. 

Current blinked incredulously at the writhing mass of tentacles. Did Sand actually believe this stuff? Dead cats emerging from the tides to punish evildoers, cats being turned into eight legged monsters, it was all nonsense! Still, he wouldn’t be eating any octopus even if Tidechaser happened to bring one back to camp. Not that he would have wanted to anyways, of course.

Whether you ship it or not: looks at blog y. yeah. so very much!! palmnueng are so important to me and I did not expect that in the slightest when I started watching nlmg

Why I ship it or not: breathes in. okay it's about the devotion and the violence and the desperation and the certainty, it's about the willingness to die and it's about the refusal to let the other die, it's about how they feel unlovable and how they make sure the other is loved, it's about the fact that palm and nueng are so, so different and loving each other is so, so hard but they do it anyway and - it's what saves them both. in the end.

My opinion on their canon potential: I have very little opinions on 'chemistry' or acting because I'm the kind of nd that can never tell whether or not something is good acting. having said that I am very much in love with pondphuwin, they are so!!!! also also, pretty boys. and palmneung's canon interactions are absolutely fantastic - the only thing I wanted more of was nueng visibly caring for palm? but other than that 10/10, adore their onscreen dynamic and the way it shifts and changes into what it is in OS2

My opinion on fanon interpretations/fandom around it: um. good? I mostly use tumblr + ao3 to fandom and these two are really good about palmnueng because the fandoms are relatively small. for fanon interpretations... my only pet peeve is when they're written as one dimensional characters, but I guess that goes for any character. I don't have specific beef about them :)

Okay disclaimer, I haven't watched past ep 6 of Only Friends yet so my answers will be based on that + the little spoilers I've seen here and there for later eps

Whether you ship it or not: hmmm. in a 'you should be together so you can learn from this experience and move on' way? yes. in a 'you guys are romantically compatible' way? no.

Why I ship it or not: I think they're an interesting example of what queer relationships can sometimes look like at that age, and I love their dynamic as a fictional couple + the fact that they cause so many issues for literally everyone around them. absolutely ruinous couple 10/10. also, they change each other! for the better or for the worse remains to be seen, but change is there

My opinion on their canon potential: same thing re: acting, but their interactions are so interesting to pick apart and observe? plus, forcebook do a great job of acting the at-times conflicting emotions they have which I love. for this question I really think I need to watch more episodes though

My opinion on fanon interpretations/fandom around it: I'm only really interacting with my mutual circle for Only Friends because the show has created some... opinions that I want nothing to do with. that said I think I'm not caught up enough to make any string statement on any fanon interpretations

Just to start off however, this isn't @ anyone on here or towards anyone currently. If for whatever reason you feel this post is somehow about you, I really don't know what to tell you fam.

Anyways—

I do also hate how I find a character I wanna rp with, I hit up the mun, we plot and plot and plot and then once the post is made, the thread goes 3 notes and it dies.

Now, I understand people have lives. I do too, even if it doesn't seem like it. I also understand there's also chronic illness, mental illnesses, trying to survive in a capitalist society that wants to break you down until there's nothing left but a broken husk of a person.

I get it.

But what I don't get is how this person will gas you up in dms saying how they wanna do this and that rp but then not really give you anything.

If I wanted to talk to like minded fans I'd go into a fan server and talk to people there. And I'll be honest I don't wanna do that because the majority of the fandom, any fandom, is stupid af.

I can handle slow and steady replies. I can even understand not having a muse for a character (ex: me and Mew talk at length about Sissel and Kaveh despite me being on hiatus)

But at least despite both of our busy schedules, we still actually write with each other. And get characters stories going and have them actually develop in roleplay.

Meanwhile a person I tried to rp with mostly just talked about how great x ship is but only in dms and I'd get like 1 maybe 2 replies a month.

Have your favorites, I'm no saint either but at least also be upfront about it.

Or if you're only here to ship just say so. So then I can decide "do I wanna ship or should I bounce?" (9/10 times I bounce). As much as I scream for a Geppie I won't ship unless there's actual development and chemistry between the two. As impossible as people may think.

I need to take a moment here to really, REALLY appreciate Toby fox's characters and writing. Having such a big, popular indie creator who's also so LGBTQ-positive (not gonna pretend it's any of my business wether he's One Of Us or just an absolutely banger ally) means a lot to so many of us - especially since he's in a position where he doesn't have to worry about corporate censoring and having to fight to have his story told the way he wants or to include intended representation.

'Would they ever be brave enough/able to make this wlw/mlm ship canon?' isn't even a question with his work - more just 'is this intended as romantic or simply a really beautiful, well rounded and full-of-heart friendship?' (best example that comes to mind here is sans and toriel, a m/f pair lol)

And the amount of nonbinary characters!!!! We've seen so many examples of characters who use they/them, one of which who uses no pronouns at all in-game (seam), and even someone who seemingly uses they/it! (That being chara). And ofc mettaton and mew mew's stories being pretty clear examples of binary trans characters...

The fact that this feeling of normalcy even extends to poly relationships is absolutely staggering to me, and so, so rare in any kind of media. @determinators' recent post went into a lot less detail with this kinda thing but to just to reiterate: there were several example of poly relationships being normalised in the sweepstakes and one in cyber city, and then on top of that we have the knowledge that homestuck (which Toby contributed to) had a canon poly relationship be endgame, and then there's Asgore's whole.... Situation. (There's hints towards him and Rudy, but he also seems FULLY intent on trying to win toriel back and Rudy apparently still loves his wife and doesn't seem headed towards divorce currently, y'know?) The fact that it's now POLY relationships that people are questioning if they could really happen in his games (with the possibility being real!) is... Really cool!

Anyway tldr I guess: I love that we don't need to question lgbtq representation in undertale and deltarune - we know it's something we're getting constantly and all the time regardless of if characters are in relationships or not, and it always feels so genuine, fleshed out and full of heart. The fact that there's kids out there getting to grow up with Toby's work is so, so important to me.

I finally made a reference for a One Piece OC I made recently, her name's Ren! (Full name Aston Hydrangea Ren) (I love mouthful names) There's more about her under the cut! (it's very rambly btw)

She's 24 and is the user of the Magic Magic Fruit/Maho Maho no Mi! She's just a magical girl but in One Piece, I guess. Think Precure or Tokyo Mew Mew, I guess. The design to the right is her magical girl form. She can summon weapons and fight with them, and do those really glittery attacks that make no sense irl. But she has a limited amount of energy she can use before she passes out. Attacking, summoning and transforming take some of that energy out of her. I don't know if this makes any sense, it makes more sense in my head.

Her birthday is March 4th.

She loves writing poems, and has been writing in the same notebook since she was 17. That thing has seen everything.

She's been sailing the seas since she was 15, and it wasn't until her 20's that she found a crew to be on. It's the Heart Pirates, of course. She was originally made for the purpose of oc x canon stuff with Law. Help.

She has a little brother, Aston Rosebay Seppo, is 18 (post-timeskip). His dream as a little kid was to become a Marine, maybe they'll meet again someday.

She has a bounty on her head, but it's nothing too crazy. It's relatively low, and she only has it because she beat up a few Marines that tried to help her when she was in a lot of shock and couldn't process anything properly. She felt threatened and beat 3 up before dipping.

She's been through a lot, but she still tries to be positive and friendly. Of course, she doesn't take shit from anyone and if someone over steps her boundaries they WILL know. But overall, she just wants to be happy and free :)

Idk, I like her. She's fun to draw and I like making all my characters overpowered girlbosses. I have like, 3 other op ocs I want to make refs for but I need to get Ren and Law out of my system asap. I feel like I'm goinf crazy over both of them. Expect ship art of them soon I guess? We'll see.

Hi there! Happy New Year! Something I've really enjoyed about watching Zwei is noticing or looking up what ballets, fairytales, concepts, et cetera you get characters' names from. One name I can't figure out though is the full name you gave Fakir on the cover of The Prince and the Raven. The best guess I have is that F. A. Hessmann is supposed to be a reference to E. T. A. Hoffmann, but I'm not sure since it could be a reference to someone else who actually has that last name. You don't have to answer this if you don't want to but I was wondering if you could share where you got the name from? I hope you have a great 2023! Good luck working on the project.

Ooh, how wonderful is that! I understand, I'm also interested in things like that in any show/anime/media I see :)

A bit backstory: PT has a very vague relation to names. Main cast has no surnames and first names can be not-real-names. No matter how exotic a name someone has the characters act like it's nothing unusual (which is the best option in my opinnion, it's kind of pointless to start to comprehend why someone has a weird name in a fairytale's magical world where common norms don't apply anyway). Most magical girl names etc. don't make much sense either, they just sound cool (in Japanese where they twist English :) My top funky names in anime include: Vegeta, Trunks and Bra (bula or something) from Dragonball who have their names after a vegetable and underwear. Wedding Peach (no need to explain), Mew Ichigo and Mew Mews (cats meows rly?) and alas, Sailor Moon and company (the universe and galaxies are full of Japanese sailor school outfits and yet none of them sails on a ship). A special mention for everyone's favorite "man of my dreams" Tuxedo Mask/Tuxedo kamen, who's name just won't translate to any known language and maintain a cool vibe. But having a extravagant name is part of their allure, we love them regardless or because of the names <3

Back to the guestion. Drosselmeyer is actually his surname and by the gravestone we know his full name is D.D. Drosselmeyer. No further intake what the letters stand for. Fakir didn't knew he was related to Drossy, which means the most logical reason is that he has a different familyname. And to have a different name, it's most logical it changed through marriage of one if his ancestors. Given the time and common norm, women usually took their husbands names when they married. So Fakir's surname isn't Drosselmeyer.

It's a bit uneasy to impose names on characters. But since they are not mentioned I had to fill in the gaps. Names aren't brought up much but I'm revealing them to the viewers. Drosselmeyer is already a very German name so I wanted to stay true to the roots of the story which takes place in German. The "A" in the name comes from Fakir's dad whom I named Arno (since his name was never given either).

"Hessmann" was inspired by the Headless Horseman.

In one version of the legend (though folklores around the world have this figure), a mercenary from Hessen loses his head in a battle and is left wandering on land as a spirit searching for his missing head or unable to return home because he died on American soil (Sleepy Hollow). The Headless Horseman is sometimes referred to as "the Hessian" for that was his original home in Germany. Hess alone sounded a bit partial so I added in the common ending of German names mann, and thus it became Hessmann (a man from Hessen). Fun fact: I don't particularly fancy any film/tv adaptations of Sleepy Hollow, I just like the original myth/s of the Headless Horseman :D

While I like the name the story of the Hessian aka Headless Horseman it also resonates with The Knight's story in PT: men died in action and were left to wander.

Least favourite character: this pains me to type with my umg loving hands but fahsai. started off so strong but i've found her overall arc to be less than i had hoped for. i wanted a passionate freak girl!

Reason why I watch it: because it has heart and hope and grief and healing and carefully considered and portrayed character study. it has practical effects and genre aware filming/editing styles and you can tell that the people involved in making it LOVE what they're doing and also don't take themselves too seriously. because it's silly and it knows that talking about aliens and monsters is just a backdoor way of dealing with the fringe parts of ourselves, that looking up is a way of looking within. because nanon wears glasses and speaks some english and milk is present and could throw me through a window or perhaps over her shoulder. lots of reasons

I finally watched episodes 1-4 of Only Friends. I think it’s a show that’s well done, well acted, well directed, pretty, etc. But I don’t like any of these couples. So please feel free to ignore the rest of this while I ramble. I just need to get this out. I do like the show! It’s very entertaining!

And I do like Sand and Ray. But I prefer Ray and Mew. How do they want me to watch Ray calling Mew, crying, to tell him he loves him, seconds away from killing himself, and not expect me to ship them? Insane. And for Mew to say he’ll never abandon Ray, only for Ray to end up drinking in a bathtub again, feeling abandoned. Unforgivable, show. ☹️

Here’s my bad opinions because my brain doesn’t want me to just be happy and enjoy the messy, sexy show, so please don’t take offense or take it too seriously. I swear my brain likes to undermine my enjoyment of television.

Nick is creepy. Looking through his customer’s phone. Wiretapping his FWB’s car. Playing the tape of two people having sex for his roommate. At least he acknowledges that he’s nasty, I guess.

Ton is messing with Ray, Mew, and Top. Mew and Ray are supposed to be his friends. Mew does not deserve that. And I’m not sure how much Ton and Cheum know about Ray almost killing himself, or if they just know he was in a bad place, but if Ton does know, that’s really messed up for him to manipulate Ray like that and open him up to being rejected again if he knows Mew already rejected him once and that Ray is really sensitive to feeling unloveable and like a burden. I do still enjoy watching Ton try to manipulate people, though.

Top gives me such a smarmy feel. I don’t know if he’s supposed to, though. Or if that’s just a me problem. Like it’s hard for me to believe that he really does like Mew, but I think I am supposed to believe that. But the audacity of him telling Mew he has nothing to hide when he just slept with one of Mew’s friends is hilariously awful. And he slept with Ton because of a photo of Mew kissing Ray two years ago. And didn’t even bother to talk to Mew first. Also throwing out one packet of drugs does not mean you’ve quit.

Cheum seems great. Although she was a little pushy with Mew having a boyfriend. But she’s cute with her gf.

Sand, I do love. He’s great. My only issue with him is that he was mad at Ray for leaving to help Mew. Disappointed, sad, let down, that’s understandable. But would you really want to be with someone who prioritizes having sex with you over helping a friend who has nowhere to spend the night? But overall he’s great. And him not like Top is a strike against Top.

Mew, I also love. I don’t get what he sees in Top, though. And in terms of his list of requirements. Ray, yes, did kiss him in his sleep. But he apologized and does feel bad genuinely and he really does respect Mew. He is Mew’s friend and gets along with all his other friends. And I thought the only secret he was keeping was his crush on Mew, but Mew already knew that. So ✔️✔️✔️ Whereas, Top does not respect him, or he would’ve talked to him about Ray before having sex with Ton. Ray hates Top, so as Mew’s most beloved friend, that’s another fail. And he definitely has secrets. So ❌❌❌ So if you want a rich boy, Mew… also of course, Ray was wrong to kiss Mew. But separately from that event, over the past two years, I do think that Mew (and Ton and Cheum) should take more care in general with Ray, knowing his mental health history. I don’t think it’s reasonable of Mew to expect their friendship can be the same as it was, at least until he knows for a fact that Ray has moved on. So I don’t he should be calling Ray his most beloved friend or be as affectionate with Ray or talk to him about how happy he wants Ray to be, knowing how Ray feels. That sucks from Mew’s perspective, but he has to know that’s not helping Ray get over him. That’s just going to make it hurt more when he turns him down again. It’s not Mew’s fault that he feels that way, but Mew shouldn’t expect that nothing will change. But then again, after promising to never abandon him, if Ray and Mew ended up not being as close, I would have murder in my heart. So either way is a lose-lose for me. Also it was cruel of him to say Top is the first person to make his heart tremble. Hon, just say, yep really like him. And it’s not nice of him to keep trying to push Ray on Sand to make himself feel better about not liking Ray back. But more broadly, Mew, Ton, and Cheum go out drinking all the time with their friend who clearly has a drinking problem, and also apparently, a drug addiction and they just pawn him off on each other, knowing he feels like a burden. His mental health isn’t their responsibility, but maybe they could consider inviting Ray to some events that don’t involve drinking and partying once in a while.

And Ray. Ray is my favorite. My poor (in all but money), sad, lonely, lovestruck boy. I adore him. He’s always smiling, but dead inside. He has no one but Mew to be his emergency contact, even though he talks about his dad often. I can’t blame him for loving Mew. He feels like a burden to everyone, thinks everyone hates him, and Mew is over here giving him sun themed keychains and telling him he brings brightness, that he’s a ray of sunshine. How do you not fall in love? And it has to hurt to see that the person Mew is falling for is so much like him, except worse. I think he genuinely likes Sand, too. But I just don’t think it would work. Because he seeks Sand out when he’s upset about Mew. And that’s just not fair to Sand or Ray himself.

In conclusion, I think the best way to go is RayMewSand, even though I just said Ray and Sand wouldn’t work (Mew does seem to pay a lot of attention to Sand, calling him lovely [jealous of not having Ray’s attention perhaps? 🤫]) to make everyone (me) happy. And also TonTop so they don’t inflict their garbage on anyone else. And Nick gets no one because he does have sad eyes, but I draw the line at looking through a customer’s personal photos and masturbating to them to boot.

Another Tokyo Mew Mew New episode 1 thought dump no one asked for

(aka: “I’ve slept on all of this and I am now able to think straight after bouncing off the walls all day yesterday”)

⚠️ Spoilers below the fold. These are all opinions. Take them with a grain of salt.

I’ve already made a separate post about the Zakuro foreshadowing, with her playing card being different and her aliens-in-the-hair sequence at the end. I’ve been mulling over all of the theories I’ve seen out in the wild, and IMO the most likely one I’ve seen is that Zakuro works with the aliens in some capacity at some point in the series, or is a double agent. I am still fully convinced she is NOT related in any way shape or form to Deep Blue.

I’ve seen some kishigo shippers out in the wild upset over the fact that their opening sequence isn’t a kiss anymore. That’s okay. The nature of their relationship is inherently creepy, so the fact that the producers are underscoring it in the opening tells us they’re aware that the ship is dark, and they’re not sugar-coating it with a sparkly kiss sequence like in the 2002 anime.

On the contrary, Ryou/Ichigo shippers are getting FED with that ending sequence of them turning into cats. It’s really cute and totally shipper bait.

Back to my favorite trash ship, I know a bunch of kishigo shippers are like “wait, we don’t get the ‘Quiche stole Ichigo’s first kiss’ tension anymore!” and while, yeah, that was a good plot device for kishigo shippers to hang our hats on, the accidental Ichigo/Masaya “whoops our lips touched” thing IS in the original manga. It’s just … not as intense as in the new anime, lol.

The humor in episode 1 caught me off guard in a good way. The writing for this reboot is genuinely SO funny.

My bet on the answer to “why is Mint already here?” is this: I’m guessing Mint’s family is involved in the Mew project with Ryou’s family/is part of some kind of tech VC fund. Mint’s chibi intro talks about her wanting to be involved in her dad’s business one day. I’d be willing to bet her dad’s business is a tech or venture capital company that is intertwined with Ryou’s work, and thus, she helped plan the Mew project / was the first Mew.

Masaya’s new VA is dreamy. There, I said it. I love his new voice to death.

Masaya’s reaction to Ichigo being honest with him about not knowing much about environmental issues is sweet. I’m glad Ichigo is up front with him about being ignorant in the reboot. She comes across as less vapid around Masaya which I love.

The fact that the show is making a point to have Ichigo be undecided on her life path is *chefs kiss*. I use this as a plot device in my fic because I think it makes her character development / personal growth more interesting if she still has a lot of personal discovery to do, and I’m glad they’re doing that here.

Predictions for ep. 2: I think it will loosely be 1) explanation of the Mew project and Mint’s background, so we get more of Mint’s story we missed in ep. 1, 2) Lettuce’s story / battling Lettuce and having her join, and 3) a light teaser for Pudding’s recruitment. I do not expect us to get all the way to Quiche’s intro — I’d be willing to bet they’re saving that for ep. 3. If you read my summary of Japanese Twitter reactions to the first 3 episodes, you’ll know that I’m expecting ep. 3 to end with the zoo animal battle and Pudding joining the team. That’s a lot for one ep, and I think Quiche’s intro will go in ep. 3. So, in summary, I think episode 2 will take us close to the end of the manga volume 1, save for maybe the last chapter.
