Marriage/Poly AU explained here and this specific post focuses on exploring Cali and Gov crushes on Florida, Louisiana, New York, Texas and DC. Gov and DC are separate people and I've explained it in the linked post.

Anyway, for obvious reasons the actual thing will be under the read more. There will be some sexual themes written in this so I out it under read more but there is sfw chapter at the end which you be able to read on ao3 as well!

Also also, throughout working on this beast (for me at least) it went through many forms I lost count. Huge thank you to people on the discord server for giving me ideas by answering my questions and sharing their own headcanon! I put a ๑ next to them when they are referred! I have plans for doing separate stuff for other headcanon as they didn't exactly fit in here but at this point this is it's own beast sooooo

Without further ado, enjoy the headcanon and kind of a whole one shot at the end!

Anyway, headcanon time bc they are easiest to start with.

•Cali and Gov are switches bc yes. One would assume that either California or Gov are in charge of the other but they switch usually

•I'm still sub California camp bc just gives me that vibe of a brat who only subs for the right person he trust. Otherwise he can easily charm someone to let him top like a one night stand type of deal. When he tops he likes to praise his lover and worship them but he also likes to gag and blind them and watch them fall apart under his hands.

•Gov on the other hand is a bit more top adjacent only bc I imagine it be hard for him to give up any kind control outside or inside the bedroom. Largely out of habit but when he subs he turns into very vocal lover. Likes to be tied up as well it gives him that edge but also the pressure helps him relax further into blissful state. He also has degradation kink-(๑)- which works both ways, like to degrade people but when someone degrades him he has buffering moment followed by blue screen.

•Their first time with each other was filled with awkward chuckles and talking as they tried to work out what the other might like. They ended up getting each other off with their hands after mutual agreement to talk more in the morning and ended up eating ice cream and watching movies.

•California is more experienced then Gov but doesn't mind teaching Gov and encouraging him to go for different stuff. Gov doesn't say it but he appreciates it a lot. They try out new stuff whenever something sparks their interest be it a new position or kink they wish to explore. California got Gov to do few challenges and scenes from stuff he reads to see if they would work out IRL. Gov pretends to be annoyed by them but they end up having great fun anyway even if it sometimes ends up with them having giggling fits.

•I hate this song with burning passion but tying back to them trying different challenges. California got Gov to try c-bat rhythm and both hated it. Cali made whole rant he nearly send to state group chat but thankfully he only send it to his governon who didn't have time to check his text before Gov appeared like a demon and broke his phone before leaving. He may have avoided work for few days after that.

•California found out about Gov crushing on Florida, Louisiana and DC in three different occasions and only put it together recently. Yes he gave Gov lots of shit for not going after them first time he realised he had hots for them and Gov just pouted about it and tried to defend himself but it just ended up with Gov not being able to walk the next morning after California proved a point.

•The First time California noticed it was when the states collectively decided to go to the beach. California and Florida were surfing and Cali spotted Gov ogling Florida from under the parasol he hid to avoid getting sunburned. Even after that day he kept noticing a light blush dusting Gov cheeks anytime Florida mentioned surfing or was showing off his strength by wrestling the alligators.

•Later that night when the two were cuddling, Cal asked Gov directly if he had crush on Florida which Gov of course denied. The deny was quickly cut off when Cali started talking dirty, purring into Gov ear about being helplessly trapped and pinned under Florida or tying Florida to the bed and testing those new toys on him whilst watching Hun squirm and moa-he got smothered with pillows. Some would say that's spous-okay fine he will go to sleep but they will talk more in the morning. (They didn't)

•Louisiana was harder to spot but it was during one of the cookouts the South hosted. They ran out of drinks or something-he can't remember exactly what-but Loui and Gov were gone for a good while before they returned with gov looking a bit pink on the face and Louisiana looking a bit smug if cheeky as he teased Gov about something.

•Later Gov told him about how someone mistaken them for a couple and wasn't listening and kept spewing bullshit even when Gov was trying to correct them. After a while Gov was ready to do some "government overreach" when the person got a bit more aggressive, getting up to their faces and looking like they were about to pull something out to attack them with, but Louisiana acted faster, pinning the person to a nearby wall by their neck.

Gov isn't sure what was exactly said but the person looked paler and stumbled towards security who came over to check on the situation. Louisiana bullshitted that the two were a couple who was harassed and they were mostly let go (Loui might have picked gov, their groceries and ran) and California really should stop looking at him like he is idiotic. He isn't he swears and it was just one time thing anyway!

Cali did call him stupid and an idiot and proceed to try and smother him with pillows for not taking the opportunity to carry the couple joke long enough to get at least one date.

•When it comes to DC, Cali only witnessed the end bit when he was dropping some paperwork in Gov office and saw DC speed walking from there looking flustered if a bit pale and Gov bashing his head on his desk. There was also a breeze from the newly broken window scattering the papers around the office.

•Apparently-Gov started, wrinkling his nose as California sat on his laps and cleaned the wound on his forehead-he and couple other politicians had a meeting that was going nowhere. The meeting was interrupted by DC who had documents Gov requested as they were needed for the next state meeting. One of the politicians snarled something about states being useless which set something off in DC as he proceeded to verbally murder the politicians. Gov isn't sure what was exactly said as he was too busy staring-simping, California provided with a grin-at DC and the way his eyes shone and how he suddenly had command of the room, the anger and everything find words to describe this bullshit

When Gov finally butted in and dismissed the politicians but told DC to stay. DC was getting defensive even before Gov had a chance to speak which unfortunately led to FBI being thrown out of window by frustrated DC. How even gov doesn't know. All he knows is that he said something that made DC look all red and walk out and he been just banging his head on the desk....he so wanna smash tho

Which speaking of Cali!

•Started simping after Texas without realising he was simping for years. Like pretty much since they knew each other California been drawn to Texas and he never was able to work out why exactly. Until south hosted 4th of July cookout and Texas somehow managed to get mechanical bull set up. Gov still laughs about the nosebleed he got when it was Texas turn.

•In his defense. he didn't knew Texas would look so... so hot whilst doing that! Just even thinking back on it makes his cheeks warm. And those jeans ah..... Gov has no business staring at him knowingly like that! So what if they are in the meeting? At least he isn't eye fucking Florida across the table!

•The main point is, Cali only started to acknowledge his feelings after that night. It did spiral into avoiding Texas for good couple weeks which made other states confused as to why the two aren't fighting. Hell even Texas tried to ask him what was wrong but of course he avoided that. Gov grew a bit tired of his moping and staged an "intervention" which was Cali being spread on Gov desk and fucked thoroughly only getting to cum when he finally told Gov what was up. Gov made sure to give Cali plenty of cuddles later and to tease the hell out of him.

Cali did apologise for his behaviour in his way which just involved him buying everyone expensive consoles or items they were chatting about when they thought he wouldn't hear. He even made pecan pie (it was rough day for the kitchen. North East and South still cry about the abomination the first pie ended up as) which Texas accepted with a grin. Cali might have nearly shoved the whole pie in Texas face because of how flustered he suddenly got but it was worth it.

•New York crush spiraled out of control during New Year eve party. The states were invited to fancy party hosted by politicians thus pretty dresses and suits all around. Gov was wearing one of his tailored pieces and looking way more serious then most states usually see him. Even Florida and Louisiana were convinced to wear suits! .... well Lousianna was wearing a suit, Florida was wearing top half of a three piece suit over a flowing ball gown with front cut off to show off the fuzzy socks and fancy crocks he was wearing. Cali still remembers the horrified faces of some of the guests foundly.

He himself was wearing quite nice piece of floor length gown with diamonds and sequins making it sparkle and shimmer as if it was water or fire. But he also was getting sick of some of the people, thus his near successful attempt at leaving unnoticed. Just as he was about to press the button to take him to the rooftop, another person joined him in and he blinked owlishly at New York before blushing and looking away when NY glared at him.

New York looked so pretty too. The suit was hugging all the right places and the dark blue colour of the suit just helped to bring out the blue of his eyes out. He even had his hair slicked back although few strands of hair still seemed to have mind of their own as they fell from the hairstyle, framing New York face just right.

He didn't even notice when they arrived to the roof but once out there they both went to the ledge and shared a cigarette together. When he started to shake from the cold New York promptly took off his suit jacket and put it on him, not meeting his eyes as he did but it still made California blush and smile. They shared cigarette for a good while and kept stealing glances at each other.

But before ether of them could say anything, there was ping as the elevator doors opened up again and Florida came barreling out, shouting something about fashion and chaos as he tackle hugged New York, Cali noted that he was wearing Loui suit jacket as well, as he quickly grabbed the two smaller states before they went over the rooftop.

There was a laugh as Louisiana came out from the elevator next, grinning at New York and winking at him which made New York grumble as he held Florida and gave up on his lecture as to why you dont tackle people on the rooftops deciding that going back to the party would be better ides as he dragged Florida towards safety of the elevators.

When they returned back to the party downstairs, Gov shot him concern look which he dismissed with a wave of his hand, still feeling warm from the interaction on the roof as they all slowly got ready for the countdown to the new years.

Texas at least had decency to close the door before sitting down.

"Cut the bullcrap and answer the question"

"What even bought this on?"

"Well you see, Nevada shared... somethin' on that server you and Washington had everyone join like a month back? And Utah supported it with few evidence pieces and well here we are"

Gov wondered if its not too late to take FBI approach and escape through the window.

"Well I haven't seen it so I can neither confirm nor deny-"

"Here" New York threw placed his phone on the desk which Gov took cautiously and looked through the screenshots in the gallery. He raised an eyebrow at the name on top being #Blackmail-sharing as he didn't remember such channel existing in the server. Not wasting anymore time. he carefully read through it"

Texas only watched with small amusement as Gov eyebrows climbed higher and higher on his forehead, snorting quietly when the fed went pale, guessing that he managed to read through the 'evidence'-as Utah and Nevada insisted calling the stolen footage from cameras around the house as. If it wasn't serious he would have laughed at Gov outright.

"So?"

"So nothing"

"The fuck you mean 'so nothing'?! It's a simple question! Are you married or not?!" New York looked ready to blow a gasket which yeah no, he can't afford another window repair so close from the last time.

"Why is it bothering you two so much whatever me and Cali are married or not?"

New York looked like a deer caught in a headlights for a moment as he buffered and tried to come out with reasonable excuse but Texas seemingly beat him to it as he looked at Gov like he just revealed the big secret.

"A-ha! so you are married!"

"I'm sorry?-"

"Well you just said "whatever you and cali" are married and we didn't mention anyone by name!"

Gov raised his eyebrow and just pointed back to the screenshots on New York phone. "Maybe you didn't but Utah and Nevada apparently did"

"Alright fair point but still"

"So back to the original question, why does it bother you two so much?"

"Less bother and more like it feels like somethin' others should know and what's not considering-" Texas trailed off, a light blush dusting his cheeks as he cleared his throat and looked at New York for help or distraction.

"Least we expected was to be invited or literary fucking anything instead of being kept in the dark, only to find out Utah and Nevada knew before us" Gov blinked and looked a bit closer at the two, noticing the slight tremors going through New York frame as he kept glaring at Gov with... was that Hurt? And Texas despite his calm demeanour did seem like he wanted to shoot something or someone.

Letting out a sigh he leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples as he gathered up what he should tell them without Cali potentially getting mad at him for it later.

"-specially if it was recent-"

"Wait hold one when do you think we got married exactly?"

New York blinked and squinted suspiciously at Gov. "Recent I suppose? 10 years or less?"

"Oooh"

"What in tarnation you mean 'ooh'?" Now it was Texas turn to look at Gov with suspicion.

"Well, Cali would be able to give you a more details but I'm pretty sure this year we will have our 200 anniversary? Give or take few years"

Gov didn't knew the two could be that quiet and if anyone asked him about it he could have sworn he heard a paperclip drop from his desk.

". . . what"

"... do you want me to repeat or-" Gov flinched as New York abruptly stood ups the chair he was sitting on clattering loudly to the floor as he stormed out of the room.

Texas just gave him a look of something-he really needs to spend more time distinguishing emotions considering how long he usually stares at them anyway-nodding as he left his office a bit more calmly.

When the door shut he just let out a sigh and banged his head on the desk. He blindly reached over for his phone and opened up messages with Cali, quickly typing out a warning which he hopes Cali would read instead of ignore.

Why did it feel like he just jinxed himself?

California frowned and growled in frustration as he coughed yet another trash instead of the fish he needed for the bundle. Honestly sometimes fishing was bullshit!

Before he could open up his cheat menus something-or rather someone-fell on top of his chest. making him grunt and lift his switch into the air as he glared down at the bucket hat and sunglasses.

"Florida, why?"

"Why not?"

California just rolled his eyes and wiggled a not to get more comfortable, letting Florida shuffle and find his own comfy position on top of him. "Whatever just don't interrupt men I nearly had that fish!"

"Sure you did! And I'm blind!"

"Mhm so we won't have to worry about chaos?"

"Oh no, it means even more chaos cause now I get to shoot confetti glue sticks at everyone without getting in trouble!"

Cali just laughed as he went back to his farm and closed the game after saving progress by going to bed. He out the switch on the table next to him, he notice that his phone has one new notification on it.

Before he could check it tho, Florida grabbed his hand and dragged it closer to his face, inspecting something.

"... like, what are you looking for? It's just my hand-"

"When did you get married? Its first time I see you wearing it"

"Not true! You saw me wearing it couple weeks ago when I went out with Gov!" Cal couldn't help but correct Florida, blinking at the sudden chill and blank look on Florida face that quickly shifted into a pout.

"You married Gov few weeks ago and didn't tell us? We so could have helped! I could have brought Peter to officiate it!"

"I think you mis-wait Peter?"

"A priest alligator!"

"....a priest alligator?"

"Yes!"

"As in like priest who's mutant alligator or alligator who is a priest?"

"Yes"

"... fair enough"

"So why didn't you tell us?" For once Florida seemed to be eager to go back to the topic.

Cali rolled his eyes and let out a sigh as he flicked Florida nose, grinning when he scrounged it up adorably.

"As I was like saying, I didn't marry Gov few weeks ago-"

"Sha! You should have said something about dem wedding parry sooner! I could have supplied alcohol"

"Loui!"

"FLORIDA NO-OOMPH" Cali clutched his stomach as he was promptly tramped over by Florida who launched himself into Louisiana arms for a hug.

Louisianan just laughed and spun Florida around, nuzzling their cheeks together in a greeting. From where he was curled up into a ball of pain-florida was heavy damnit-he heard amused huff. He looked up and squinted at DC who just grinned at him.

"Alright there California?"

"Likes totally go fuck yourself"

DC just responded with a laugh as he helped California sit up and checked him over, pausing over the ring. Unlike Florida he seemed more curious rather then interrogative.

"That's quite pretty ring, suits you"

"Thank you"

"Ring, sha?" this time Loui seemed more confused as he held Florida like teddy bear. A teddy best full of cocaine and drugs who kept waving his limbs around but a teddy nonetheless.

"Yup" California proudly showed his ringed hand to Louisiana, entering infodumping mode as he explained how he managed to get the materials for it and the cost that was more then worth it.

Whilst Loui did nod along. Cali could tell he looked a bit troubled which made him pause and frowns as he stared at the three, arms crossed and eyes squinting in suspicion.

"Okay, fess up, like what's with the faces?"

"I think it's a bit hard to imagine you married is all?" DC supplied a but unsure as he fidget with his tie, only to suddenly fall on the couch as Florida launched himself St him and made them fall.

"Yeah! And you didn't even invite us!"

"Okay, first of all, rude, this is like my second marriage I have game you know?" He ignored The shocked expressions less he takes it even more personally then he does now, "And me and Gov married like ageeeees ago"

"and how long would that be exactly?" Before California could reply to DC question a new voice interrupted.

"Two-fuckin'-hundred years apparently!"  NY replied, looking like he is about to get out his bat and smash something. Texas trailing after him looking like he is torn between joining NY with his gun or go get wasted.

Deciding that now would be perfect time to check his phone to avoid the half alarmed and half hurt looks shot his way. Turning it on he blinked at several messages from Gov that varied in panicked tone with the most recent one practically begging California to check his phone or to come to his office.

Letting out a sigh he shrugged and gathered his switch and pocketed his phone. "Yep, married 1823 and all, funny how time flies"

"Wait wait didn't you became a state in 1850? How can you have two marriages before existing???"

"Wait a damn second two marriages?!"  California ignored Texas outburst as funny as it was to see his face all twisted up from.emotions he clearly doesn't experience everyday.

"Who said I started existing in 1850?" California grinned and shot the group a wink as he quickly made his way toward Gov office, ignoring the shouts and demands to explain himself from the group.

Entering Gov office was always a 50/50 shot of either finding it organised to the last millimeter or finding it in chaos with later strewn about and fire somehow burning something. 

So when he did finally entered he expected chaos and was instead greeted with the lights shut off, shutter blinds down and Gov curled up on the couch California bullied him into putting in there for naps after all night paperwork marathons.

He shut and locked the door to the office and made his way to Gov but before he could do anything, two strong arms circled around his waist and dragged him down to the couch.

Cooing softly Cali nuzzles and kissed Gov cheek as he hugged him back as best as he could murmuring soft reassurances. 

For mow comforting his husband was his priority, and after getting Gov to drink some water and eat something, they will brainstorm what the next step should be. 

They will make it.

Rebel Robin podcast (ep 3 &4 analysis)

For those who haven’t read them yet. Here’s the analysis for podcast ep 1&2. Analysis of Rebel Robin book-here. And eastereggs from rebel robin novel- here.

So the main things I noticed in ep 3 was how Robin spying was shown as a huge NEGATIVE-and Mr Hauser got upset over her doing so. Robin listens to mr. Hauser’s phone call (like Karen with Mike in s3/ us gov spying on calls in s1) & on a different occasion Robin also eavesdrops on a private convo he is having with someone else in his classroom ( like El spying on Mike talking to Lucas in s3). And when he finds out about this he tells her how wrong it was to spy on other people like that. In the past, I also talked about how the theme of spying is shown for many other st characters ( in the show) and how it  isn’t romanticized like people think it is- here .

Anyways , Ep 3 ends with a call from a h*mophobic teen( Dash) telling Robin to “stay away” from Mr. Hauser cause he’s “dangerous”. Why he thinks he’s dangerous is solely for the fact he’s gay.I think this theme may come into play in s4 Hawkins (in relation to the satanic panic). In ep 4 Robin jokes to (gay) Mr. Hauser  : “ So what are you into... satanism?” (Sadly most queer people have been told over and over we’re going to hell for being gay/lgbt+. it’s sadly an almost universal experience.) For those unaware- the ‘satanic panic’ was a right wing christian movement in the 80′s that WRONGLY associated certain things with supposed satanism.  Just some of the many things they demonized : rock music , stephen king , wearing black,  horror/fantasy media, and of course queer people and d&d (hellfire club - the name is a a xmen ref but in the show it’s probably an inside joke about the satanic panic and people being scared of d&d). We see foreshadowing of the satanic panic hinted in s3 (in relation to d&d)- on tv the narrator asks if “satanism” (pans to d&d set) is to blame for the odd occurrances in Hawkins. And given how the s4 el-trailer had the clock say 3:00am for the “witching hour” also called “the devil’s hour” since it’s supposed to be a subversion of jesus dy*ing at 3:00 pm. And the possibility s4 may take place around Easter.  I think we’ll see that religious (Christian) extre*sm  causes many people in Hawkins to interpret the supernatural as ‘satanic’. And no , I’m obviously not talking poorly about all religious/christian people).

After this Mr. Hauser jokes how Hawkins is like “lord of the flies” and how he “worries” what would happen if teens were left to their own devices-like in the book. The themes in the book mostly focus on the dangers of ‘mob mentality’ and how human beings can become v*olent and turn on each other- if the safety of civilization disappears...

This I believe is foreshadowing - i mentioned in a post a while back (here). How movies on the s4 list had the theme of :  a supernatural event indirectly causing towns people to act irrationally and turn on eachother v*olently. Despite literal monsters attacking them from outside (they chose to turn on eachother instead). In the end some townspeople become the real monsters via mob mentality/v*oence/false witch hunts (the mist, the birds, etc). In ‘the birds’ (while people are hidding in a store)- they wrongly  blame certain characters for the supernatural chaos. Similarly, in ‘the mist’ (crowd of townspeople are trapped in a store) and some  start interpreting the monsters as being sent as punishment by god- some town’s people start quoting the bible and saying the only way to stop the punishment is to start “sacrificing the s*nners and nonbelievers”. BIG YIKES.ST references mapple street (where the wheelers and sinclairs live). It’s based on the twilight zone ep of the same name “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” .The ‘monsters’ of that episode -were the townspeople turning on eachother because they incorrectly think their own neighbors are part of an invading supernatural army. The enemy was actually the paranoia/mob mentality-not the supernatural force they feared.  And yes i do think this concept is linked with 80s satanic panic and will cause some town division/obstacles for our heroes to deal with . **I also think the s4 bts of the Hawkins blood clinic-may be used to show h*mophobia (linked to satanic panic) in the town. Like in one s4 movie “paradise lost”the punk rock boys who were into black clothes, rock music , horror/stephen king books- were accused by the town’s people of being gay AND have demonic powers that are k*lling fellow town’s people.

Mr Hauser says he thinks steve Harrington is Ralph from lord of the flies. And Robin disagrees saying he’s Jack. Personally- since this was when Robin didn’t know/hated Steve. I think Mr hauser is right that Steve is Ralph (one of the oldest boys) who’s “commitment to civilization and morality is strong”. But Jack  (perhaps the popular s4 kid Jake?) and his savage crew take control of the group and start trying to attack Ralph and his friends (steve’s crew- over satanic panic?). How this begins is -

 Jack, torments Ralph and others. And some kids begin to develop savage personalities, after someone claims to have seen a Beast (demongorgan?) in the woods. This creates fear among the boys, which allows Jack to access more power.Ralph gets into an argument with Jack, who splits from the tribe. Many of the other boys follow Jack, who uses fear to manipulate the boys into leaving Ralph. And Jack’s crew begin attacking Ralph and his friends.

Ok, next topic of ep 4- the sentimental part of my brain got emotional when hearing how upset Robin was. And than Mr Hauser-telling her she’s wrong and she’s not “broken” or “rotten” and “nothing about her needs to be fixed’” (got me right in the feels) . As a queer person- I feel like every lgbt+ kid/teen needs to hear what Mr. Hauser said to Robin. 

However,  the analytical part of my brain -did notice some easterggs/ series parallels.

The convo starts with them talking about music Mr hauser likes (such as Bowie). And transitions to Mr Haauser asking about things she likes, whether she’s being bullied, and he later tells her “ DON’T let other people’s small mindedness make you fell bad about yourself. you don’t need to change yourself-no matter what anyone else says” . And Mr Hauser than says him calling her the “weirdest girl in Hawkins” was a compliment (not an insult-like she initially assumed). 

This is remarkably similar to certain scenes in s1/2. In s1, Jonathan mentions musicians he likes such as Bowie, asks Will about what he likes,  and tells Will “don't like things cause people tell you you’re supposed to-especially not him (their dad who called him h*mophobic names)” . In s2, Jonathan tries to cheer Will up after asking if he's being being bullied. And calls Will  “a freak” (and says it’s a good thing) and he should be content with being a “freak “ and compares Will to Bowie ( who was openly queer since the 70s) . 

In ep 4, Robin also mentions how sad she is that her parents won’t let her ride her bike anymore cause their paranoid about her safety  (like what happened to Will in s2).

Robin (before Mr. Hauser comforts her) says she feels like she has a “rot” inside her  . This is a s2 eastergg that could be linked to either Will or El. Will says his now-memories are “growing”, spreading”, and killing.” Later Kali says the emotional pain caused by her father  caused a “wound” to “spread”. Later allusion-Brenner tells El she has a “terrible wound “ (“a rot”) that Will “grow, spread, and kill.”

The reason Robin rants about feeling like she has a “rot” inside her is because she’s being bullied, and  lost all her Hawkins friends and says  “maybe I’m broken maybe there is just something about me that drives people away? I’m the only common denominator-there’s something wrong with me! There’s something inside of me that’s just rotten and there’s nothing i can do to fix it”. Which 1)-poor Robin. 2) I feel like could easily be How Will feels in s4(who will be the same age as Robin is here in the podcast)- his dad abandoned him, all his hawkins friends are gone , the st s4 movies have h*mophobic bullying in them (and he was bullied in the past). In a interview Noah said Will in s4 “doesn’t really get along with people-it’s just him and Mike.”  I think it fits more so with Will than El . But they may feel similar:  it’s implied in s4 audition tapes she’ll be bullied too,  she moved away from her friends,  and her father (Hopper) fake “passed away.” It could easily be how both Will and El feel in s4- that there is  something “broken”/ “rotten” about them . In fact, in the rebel Robin novel there is even a character named Sheena. Sheena reminds me a bit of a mix between Will and el . She is very quiet, queercoded, and is often bullied. And she finds mean notes and other things stuffed  in her locker- placed there by bullies. A bit like how Will found the zombie-boy note in his locker. A teacher doesn’t stop her bullying just blames her and says “ This wouldn’t happen if you made it just a smidgen easier for PEOPLE to understand you.”(sort of reminding me of that Noah quote about s4 Will not getting along with most people/Jonathan saying not to change himself cause “people” say to). But sheena can be another name for Jane (there was also a 80s show character named Sheena who was psychic) so ...maybe foreshadowing of el/jane being bullied in highschool? Along with Will?

*It’s not a eastergg/parallel...just speculation. Unlike the rebel robin book... in the podcast (in multiple episodes) almost every time she opens up to Mr Hauser about her problems she says it’s ok for him to do the same and she’ll be supportive and listen. However, Mr Hauser (so far) always rejects her offer-much to her hurt/frustration. In ep 4, she asks if he has someone his “own age” he can talk to about his problems-which he says he does. Now... since in ep 4 Mr hauser is paralleled to Jonathan maybe Jonathan will have someone his own age to talk to about his problems (maybe his new friend Argyle?) We see similar to Mr Hauser giving advice/pep talks to (gay) Robin. Jonathan is always giving advice/peptalks to our (gay-coded) Will. But so far- Jonathan has no one he really emotionally leaned on in the same way (Will does with Jonathan). I also wonder if Will in s4 starts gets tired of how he always confides in Jonathan (but Jonathan never does the same with Will  in return)? Like Robin with Mr. Hauser?

Day Thirteen

So, the math teacher next door, Mr. F, acquired a mini-me when Mr. Z joined the faculty last year. I’m saying, it’s eerie how much they look and act alike. So, obviously, for today’s spirit day- dynamic duos- they wore the same outfits (red shorts, plaid shirts, orange hats- it’s kind of their iconic look). And Mrs. R and I decided to dress up as them, so we wore the same thing. The Principal said we “won” this spirit day. We certainly amused ourselves and our students. Ms. A, who has to deal with Mr. F and Mr. Z in PLC on Thursday mornings, took one look at us, shook her head, and walked away. Heh. 

Some of the other excellent duos: Lilo and Stitch, Coke and Pepsi, ketchup and mustard, Pooh and Tigger, Brady and Gronk. And some folks who couldn’t find another person to dress up with them got creative on their own, Like, one of my ninth grade boys dressed as Luke Skywalker and had a Yoda doll perched on his desk. That was pretty excellent. 

The students have been discovering that I’m a Star Wars fan. The convo I had with “Luke Skywalker” today clued them in, and a few have spotted the stuffed porg on top of my cabinet (sidenote: my default response when they ask me why there’s a porg on top of my cabinet is “Why wouldn’t there be?”). Soon they will learn I am, in fact, a Jedi Master. Heh. 

Anyways.

The teaching was good today! I mean, there was a test in GOV, so I didn’t really teach a lot, but the homework is to read the Articles of Confederation, so I fielded a few questions about that after students were finished with their tests. And I showed off my lights peed grading by returning the tests before the block was over (it’s a short test- other ones will take me a day). Some students crushed, some did not, and it was an opportunity for me to talk about how studying effectively for tests in AP classes might be different than it is for their other classes. In GOV, there are a lot of very precise terms, processes, and so on that students have to be able to recall quickly, and for some of them it’s a challenge. I’m encouraging them to meet with me, figure out some strategies, and do a retake if that’s the case.

Meantime, my World students continued to explore the SDGs and do some related research. I had them pick a goal to read about in detail, asked them what they thought of the targets, and then had them find out where countries stand- like, if they chose the goal “no poverty,” I had them find out which countries in the world are the richest and poorest, and which currently have the most rapid poverty reduction. It’s a quick assignment- and one that allows for more research and citation practice- but it sparked students’ curiosity. Some of them called me over so they could ask questions, some looked up more information on their own (to identify where various countries are, find out how rapid improvements are occurring, etc, etc...) So that was pretty cool. 

I really like the vibe in both my sections of World right now. Block 2 is huge (22 kids, two paras, and me), and I definitely have to project my voice to teach it, but it’s a lot of fun. I have some really eager learners in that section, as well as a few who find the course content or the strict structure of high school (or both) really challenging. So far they’ve been willing to trust me and at least try to do whatever I’m asking, though. Today I even made progress with the one I mentioned yesterday. Block 3 is a smaller class, but it’s no less lively. That’s my hands up all the time class. They have so many great questions and comments. I’m sure both sections will have rocky patches- it happens- but, so far, things are going really well!

Welcome to FiveThirtyEight’s weekly politics chat. The transcript below has been lightly edited.

sarahf (Sarah Frostenson, politics editor): Over the weekend, an ABC/Washington Post poll found that most Democrats now back former Vice President Joe Biden, but enthusiasm for his candidacy was, on the other hand, pretty lackluster.

Just 24 percent of his supporters said they were “very” enthusiastic about supporting him. This marked the lowest level of enthusiasm for a Democratic presidential candidate that ABC/Washington Post has found in the last 20 years. And perhaps even more troubling for Biden was that nearly twice as many of President Trump’s supporters (53 percent) said they were “very” enthusiastic about his candidacy.

This, of course, has sparked comparisons to 2016 when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found herself in a similar situation — running neck-and-neck with Trump and with only 32 percent saying they were “very” enthusiastic about supporting her in September 2016. Biden, of course, is already 8 points below that mark now.

So does Biden have an enthusiasm problem? What’s the case for why he might and the case for why we shouldn’t read too much into this now?

nrakich (Nathaniel Rakich, elections analyst): I don’t think this is something Biden should worry about, at least not right now. We’ve just come off a knock-down, drag-out, 15-month-long primary fight. And some would argue it’s still going on, with Sen. Bernie Sanders still contesting the nomination!

It’s a lot to ask for the party to be totally united at this early juncture. I’d guess that, by September, Biden will have as good or better enthusiasm numbers as Clinton did in September 2016.

natesilver (Nate Silver, editor in chief): It feels so quaint to be debating a horse-race question in the middle of a pandemic.

But basically: I don’t think enthusiasm is a terribly meaningful indicator above and beyond what is already reflected in polls.

Sanders’s voters were more enthusiastic than Biden’s in the primaries. But he’s actually tended to underperform his polls. Sometimes higher enthusiasm means you have a narrower base, and the other candidate has more room to turn out undecideds, etc.

An important qualification to all of this is that most of the polls so far are conducted among registered voters when really we want to see likely voter polls, which won’t really be reliable for another several months.

nrakich: Yeah, Biden leads in most general election national polls right now, but likely-voter polls tend to be a few points better for Republicans than registered-voter polls, and as Nate says, we don’t have a ton of these polls right now.

perry (Perry Bacon Jr., senior writer): It’s hard to say much about enthusiasm right now since we are still in the midst of the Demcoratic primary ending. For instance, I think enthusiasm around him could still grow, especially after Barack and Michelle Obama have enthusiastically endorsed him, Sanders is behind him, and he has picked a running mate who perhaps excites the party.

sarahf: That’s fair, but how do we reconcile that Trump’s very enthusiastic support is so much higher than Biden’s — 29 points?

perry: Trump is the Republican Party’s candidate, and he just won his primary with overwhelming support. The party is unified behind him. People have voted for him once. I’m not surprised his supporters are fairly enthusiastic about him.

natesilver: I don’t care how much higher a quality is that doesn’t matter.

But honestly, I think this discussion is premature in some ways. The general election campaign hasn’t begun. The primary campaign is in a zombie-like state between being sort of finished and sort of not.

We’re in the midst of a pandemic. And we don’t have very many likely-voter polls, and to the extent we do, they’re not liable to be very reliable anyway at this early stage.

Perhaps most importantly, Democrats can be very enthusiastic about beating Trump even if they’re not that enthusiastic about Biden.

perry: Right, that’s the most important thing.

nrakich: Yeah, I find it hard to get worked up by any general-election polling at this point. We’re still so early in this massive news story that could significantly help or hurt Trump.

sarahf: But is it a bad sign for Biden — and enthusiasm for his campaign — that 15 percent of Sanders supporters in the ABC poll say they’ll vote for Trump?

natesilver: Twelve percent of Sanders primary voters voted for Trump in 2016, and another 14 percent voted for a third-party candidate or didn’t vote. So those numbers are in line with four years ago. And there are fewer Sanders voters than there were four years ago, so if anything those numbers are better for Biden than they were for Clinton.

nrakich: Yeah, historically, that would be a totally normal number. In addition to the numbers Nate cites for 2016, another study found that 25 percent of Clinton voters voted for McCain over Obama in 2008.

So it’s not like this is something past presidential candidates haven’t had to overcome as well. It can make a difference in a close election, but bigger factors (e.g., the national environment, the economy) will probably determine the outcome in the end.

sarahf: OK. So what I’m hearing is that the idea that Biden has a real enthusiasm gap is — at least at this point — overrated! But isn’t it at least somewhat worrisome that there now appears to be an effort to draft New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for president?

natesilver: Ohhhhh Sarah, this is such trollbait.

nrakich: Let’s be clear — that “ooh, Andrew Cuomo should run for president!” talk is utterly nonsensical, non-serious and half-baked.

sarahf: It is! I’m not defending it. But look at what happened when that talk took off last fall. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick both entered the race as opposed to throwing their support behind someone else.

natesilver: People don’t understand the process. People think you can magically wave a magic wand and that Cuomo becomes the nominee.

Look, if Biden drops out for some reason (health, scandal, etc.), then, obviously, you’ll need a different nominee.

And I do think Cuomo might be the second-most likely nominee, after Biden.

If you need an emergency replacement nominee because Biden drops out, he’s fairly compatible with Biden ideologically.

And frankly, the “emergency replacement” scenario — while unlikely — is still probably more likely than “Bernie wins all remaining contests by 20 points and wins a pledged-delegate plurality” scenario.

nrakich: I do wonder to what extent people actually believe/want Cuomo to be the nominee, and how much is just a fun daydream.

perry: I live in Kentucky. People are suddenly talking very positively about our Gov. Andy Beshear, who is a Democrat. This is in part because Trump is doing press conferences in which he ignores the evidence and seems as interested in defending himself as he is in addressing the issues. So Cuomo comes off well in comparison, as do other governors, like Ohio’s Mike DeWine, a Republican.

It also helps that Cuomo is doing a lot of media and lives in the media capital of the United States. Plenty of governors would be getting buzz if they were doing a competent job and were based in NYC, for example, Gavin Newsom (California), Jay Inslee (Washington), Beshear, DeWine.

nrakich: I think the Cuomo thing — both talk of him becoming the nominee and his role as a leader on the coronavirus in general — has been overinflated by the New York-centric media.

perry: Also, Biden has not been super-impressive in his media appearances, so there is that.

Cuomo has been better on that front, as have other governors.

sarahf: But Biden has been kind of missing from the coronavirus response, right? Part of that is because, as you all point out, he’s not a current governor tasked with spearheading preventive measures in his state, but it does seem as if it’s harder for him to have a natural place in the conversation.

natesilver: I don’t think anything Biden’s doing right now matters very much.

He’s also done more than the media has generally acknowledged.

perry: I think Biden is in the conversation. But his general ideas (Trump should listen to the medical experts, social distancing should continue) are what basically the media, governors, experts, everyone else is saying. Biden is not trying to stand out in that conversation or be interesting, which I think is normatively good. He is not offering weird ideas to stand out.

natesilver: The narrative is dumb. It’s always dumb at this stage of the campaign, when the primary winner has in all probability been decided but it’s not technically over yet. It would be a lot worse if not for coronavirus since the media would have a lot more news cycles to fill with fake drama.

nrakich: Yeah, Sarah, Biden hasn’t been as much of a presence on our TV sets, but I don’t think that’s his fault, as Nate pointed out. I think cable news just hasn’t been giving him a lot of airtime. The other day, major networks decided to air Cuomo’s briefing on the coronavirus instead of Biden’s speech.

But what Biden has to say on the coronavirus is more relevant to a majority of the country.

natesilver: It shouldn’t give him a lot of airtime!

Biden’s not hugely relevant at the moment.

nrakich: I think they should give him more than Cuomo! Biden might be president at this time next year. Cuomo governs just 6 percent of the country.

natesilver: Cuomo is dealing with the realities on the ground in a way Biden isn’t. And New York has a lot more than 6 percent of coronavirus cases.

He’s also doing a pretty effective job of communicating about coronavirus data and where the state and the country is in combating the epidemic.

I don’t think he’d get as much press coverage if he hadn’t been doing a good job with the communication side of things. It’s earned media in the truest sense of the word.

sarahf: That’s fair. A lot of what’s happening now is outside of Biden’s control, and obviously, there’s a lot we can’t answer, but Americans still rate Trump really highly on the economy — 57 percent said they approve of how he’s handling it, which marked a new high for him in that same ABC/WaPo poll. What’s more, Trump led Biden on this metric, 50 to 42 percent. Couldn’t that pose a real problem for Biden moving forward, especially if it’s harder for him to be a part of the conversation now?

nrakich: I think this is Exhibit A for it being too early to say anything. It seems like the economy is going to be in real trouble. If unemployment hits 30 percent or the gross domestic product growth rate is -15 percent, I don’t think Americans will continue to approve of Trump’s handling of the economy.

natesilver: No, I don’t think anything about the polls right now tells us very much about what the situation is likely to look like in September, or November.

People haven’t been living with this for very long. A lot of the consequences haven’t happened yet. And after the consequences, there’s the opportunity for a rebound, or a second wave.

You just have to be patient. Right now, I spend a lot more time looking at, say, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Italy than at Trump’s approval rating. I’d argue that the former tells us more about his reelection odds than the latter, since it tells us something about the extent to which a coronavirus epidemic can slow down post-peak.

sarahf: I can’t help but think that part of the narrative is being set now, though, about Biden having an enthusiasm problem. Of course, it could be that enthusiasm for Biden doesn’t really matter because enthusiasm to elect anyone but Trump is a bigger motivating factor, but I do wonder how that plays out in the coming months. Even if the enthusiasm gap isn’t real, could the perception of one still hurt Biden?

natesilver: Just one troll question after another.

sarahf: I know! But I think people are thinking about this — and even if it’s premature now — I do wonder how it takes root, even when it shouldn’t.

nrakich: That’s interesting, Sarah. Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if cable news continually covers Biden with the implication that he is somehow inadequate or not up to the task of beating Trump. I don’t know if that could become a self-fulfilling prophecy or not.

natesilver: I think if anything people tend to overlearn the lessons of the most recent election. A lot of the templates that people applied from the 2016 primaries to the 2020 primaries led to completely wrong predictions, like vastly understating Biden’s chances.

The fact that Democrats are worried about an enthusiasm gap because of 2016 could easily help Biden because it will scare Democrats into voting.

nrakich: I certainly agree that people try way too hard to retrofit the lessons of the previous election. To many (especially those with an anti-Sanders agenda), Clinton lost because Sanders voters weren’t united around her. But can’t it just be enough that she lost because it was an extremely tight election and that happens sometimes?

perry: Biden could very well lose the general election. And he could lose in the same way that Clinton did — a center-left Democrat wins the primary on the strength of older voters, particularly older black voters, but then loses in the general, with Trump winning in key swing states even as he loses the national popular vote.

But Clinton almost won and Biden very much could win. I don’t think Biden has an enthusiasm “problem,” but having enthusiastic supporters who are donating a lot of money, volunteering and eventually turning out to vote in large numbers always helps. So getting as much of Sanders’s crowd on board as possible will be useful for Biden.

Do I think it would be better for Biden if polls showed people were excited to vote for him? Yes, because I do think there is the potential that “people are holding their nose and voting for Biden” becomes a narrative.

nrakich: I also think a lot of the problem is that no one media members or the Twitterati know personally is enthusiastic to vote for Biden. Which of course speaks to the bubbles they live in. But that can have real effects on the narrative, as Perry said.

perry: But it’s hard for me to look at these polls right now and say Biden has an actual enthusiasm problem — or really many problems at all.

To those STILL saying Ford doesn’t care about his family---

I’ve noticed that some people say that Ford doesn’t care about his family. I don’t know where people get that from but----

UHHHH excuse me---

When Ford and Stan were fighting and after Ford accidentally burned Stan against the machine, he immediately apologized to Stan, with a concerned look on his face and asked him if he was alright. 

Remember, Ford never wanted to fight with Stan in the first place, he just wanted his journal and he wasn’t aiming to hurt Stan. It was just rotten luck that Ford pushed Stan into the hot part of the machinery here. 

Then when Stan finally brought Ford back and after they told their stories and after the issue with the US GOV was taken care of 

The first thing Ford did after that was say a joke with Stan to try and ease the tension between the two of them if only for a little bit.

Stan: Look at us, when did we become old men?

Ford: You look like dad!

Stan: UEGH! Don’t say that!

Ford and Stan: both smile and laugh together

You can see it in Ford’s expression that he cares about Stan. it isn’t until Stan brings up the fact Ford still hasn’t thanked him. Which is a VERY touchy subject between the two of them right now.

 After everything that happened it was NOT a good time for Stan to be asking for a thank you. Yes Stan earned that ‘thank you’ by working 30 yrs of his life to bring Ford back.

 However you can’t force someone to be thankful, otherwise their thank you won’t be sincere. Also Stan did take Ford’s life by taking over his identity and also his house. 

Yes Stan did this to bring Ford back, but you’d probably be pissed if someone took your identity. It’s identity theft, even if the theft was for a good reason. 

The timing wasn’t the right timing. Also as far as we know, Stan never did apologize for breaking Ford’s machine. Even if it was an accident. They were both in the wrong. Stan for not apologizing to Ford, and Ford not thanking Stan.

But forgiveness doesn’t always come easy. If someone ruined my chances at a big opportunity even if it was an accident I know I’d find it hard to forgive them. 

And even thank them if they did rescue me from another dimension, also not to mention Stan was the reason Ford got stuck there in the first place. 

I’d not be too keen on forgiving someone that cost me my dream school or rob me 30 yrs of my life by sending me to another dimension even if it was an accident.

So I can totally understand Ford not thanking Stan in the moment, especially since Ford just got back.

Anyways after that Stan basically tells Ford to stay away from Dipper and Mabel and that they were his only family left.

As you can see Ford appears to somewhat tense up at this statement.

Ford obviously still cares. He’s just taken aback and doesn’t know what to say and is still upset. It would be hard for anyone to say anything under those circumstance - much less reconcile with someone. Especially after they storm off and away from you.

So it’s obvious Ford still cares DEEPLY for Stan. It’s just been so long that they have a hard time reconciling with each other because of all the bitterness they’ve harbored against each other.

Ford also cares deeply for Dipper and Mabel.

Ford dropped all his research just to spend some time with Dipper to have fun with him.

Then when they need to protect the shack from Bill, Ford trusts Mabel enough to give her a crossbow and for her to go get the Unicorn hair.

Then after Mabel comes back with the Unicorn hair, Ford praises her for protecting her family and calls her a good person. And this is heartwarming because through the entire episode the Unicorn was telling Mabel she wasn’t pure of heart and that she was a bad person.

Look at the way Mabel smiles, her eyes glisten and she has tears in them. Ford just brightened the horizon on one of her worst days ever. 

Then when Ford and Dipper go into the alien site to find the adhesive to fix the rift, Ford puts his life on the line for Dipper. Ford didn’t even think about himself in that moment, he jumped in to protect Dipper even if it could have cost him his life.

Then after Ford is taken into the space bubble, he tells Dipper to save the world and that he’ll have to do it without him. Ford wanted Dipper to get to safety and not worry about him. 

Ford wanted Dipper to escape, to save the world, so Dipper -and the rest of his family- and the entire world could continue to exist without fear of “The End Of The World” over their heads. Ford didn’t want Dipper to risk himself for him. Ford would sooner be imprisoned than let his nephew get harmed.

Then in Weirdmaggedon, when Dipper rushes off to find Mabel, instead of Ford letting Dipper run off he stops him. Because he doesn’t want Dipper charging out into Weirdmageddon recklessly because he could get hurt. 

Then after failing to get rid of Bill, Ford without any regard for his own safety- instructs Dipper to run and get down so he can be safe from Bill. 

Ford doesn’t CARE what Bill does to him he only cares about what Bill could possibly do to Dipper. And we all know later that Bill doesn’t have ANY issue in killing children.

When Mabel and Dipper use the Shack as a weapon, Ford cheers them on even though they aren’t there.

And then Bill even says: “Wow those kids really care about you...and you really care about THEM DON’T YOU?!!”

We literally see the absolute fear in his eyes when Bill speaks about torturing Dipper and Mabel. Ford is terrified of this and looks as though he’s about to beg Bill not to hurt Dipper and Mabel. 

You can hear it in his voice that he doesn’t want Dipper or Mabel hurt and that he CARES immensely for them and wants to keep them safe.

Then after Dipper and Mabel free everyone, including Ford, Ford is so relieved to see them safe. He scoops them up in his arms and proudly proclaims that they did it. And then he laughs happily and in relief.

Then Ford apologizes for his hand in causing the end of the world. And he begs Stan to help him fix it. Just look at the way he looks at Stan! Ford is obviously flooded with guilt and remorse for everything that’s happened and I’m not just talking about the end of the world either. 

He also appears that he’s apologetic towards Stan as well and when Stan tells him to thank him - Ford finally thanks Stan. He looks annoyed by Stan’s attitude but since it is a dire situation it is understandable- but he finally thanks him.

Also this is just a smaller piece, but look at how proud Ford looks when Mabel literally spraypaints a interdemensional demon in his eye! Look at his huge goofy nerdy grin!

Then when Dipper tells Ford and Stan to run and save themselves, you can see that Ford is like: OH HELL NAH! THAT’S A SUICIDE MISSION! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! - Ford is as equally terrified for Dipper and Mabel as Stan is in this scene. They know Bill won’t hesitate to hurt the kids.

Then after Dipper and Mabel run away Ford yells out to them: NO IT’S TOO DANGEROUS! Both Stan and Ford are ready to rush after them but get stopped by Bill.

Then when Stan says: 

“I can’t believe this! The kids are gonna die and it’s all my fault. All because I couldn’t shake your stupid hand!”

Look at the way Ford looks over to him. Ford looks so distraught and guilty. Look at the hurt in Ford’s eyes. You can’t tell me Ford doesn’t care about Stan at all. He shares in Stan’s pain and guilt here. 

And then when Stan blames himself, Ford tells him not to. Ford is taking responsibility for his part in Weirdmaggedon and reassuring his distraught brother that it isn’t his fault.

Then Ford is willing to risk the entire world on the chance that Bill will free the kids. He’s willing to give up the secret to the barrier if it means no harm comes to Dipper and Mabel. 

After Stan suggests that Bill goes into his mind, Ford refuses. And flat out tells Stan that he has to do it. Ford knows that there’s nothing Bill wants in Stan’s head and that this deal might be the only way for Ford to save the kids and Stan as well. 

He wants to save not only Dipper and Mabel, but Stan as well. However they come up with a plan and switch clothes to trick Bill.

Now look at Ford, look at how unsteady his hold on the gun is. He obviously doesn’t want to erase Stan’s mind. The very thought of erasing Stan’s mind is causing him pain. 

This scene right here shows how much Ford cares for Stan despite everything and it shows how much Ford doesn��t want to lose Stan. Even if it’s the only way to save the world.

Then after Stan’s mind is erased, Ford is overcome with grief fearing that his brother is gone for good. He calls Stan their hero and he hugs him. 

Look at how broken he is! He’s convinced that Stan’s memories are gone and that he’s lost Stan forever. This is the first time we’ve seen Ford cry in the series. And what brought him to tears was the fact he feared his brother was gone.

 Nothing ELSE has brought Ford to tears except this. You cannot sit here and tell me Ford doesn’t care! LOOK AT HIM! HE’S FUCKING DEVASTATED!

Then when Stan starts to remember, look at that big smile Ford has! And then Ford laughs along with everyone else while Mabel helps Stan to remember! Ford is so happy that not all hope is lost for Stan; and that Stan is going to be able to remember who he is.

Then after Stan remembers and the kids have their party, Ford finally revives their childhood hopes of going on an adventure of a lifetime. Showing that Ford wants to make full amends with Stan. So they can both make up their mistakes towards each other.

And then when Mabel and Dipper are getting ready to leave, and when the Bus driver says animals aren’t allowed - we can see Ford show the driver his gun. Ford was about to throw the fuck down with this man if he didn’t allow Waddles on the bus.

Then at the very end as Dipper and Mabel finally leave on the bus, we see Ford put his hand on Stan’s shoulder. Ford is silently reassuring Stan that he’s still got one family member by his side; and that he’ll always be by his side no matter what.

IN CONCLUSION DON’T YOU EVER DARE AND SAY FORD DOESN’T CARE ABOUT HIS FAMILY! OR I WILL LOOK FOR YOU, I WILL FIND YOU AND I WILL BEAT YOU WITH A FISH!

Chapter 4: Pyramid

Summary:  Lucy has finally achieved her dream, and finalized the purchase of her family’s former home. When she goes to inspect the Heartfilia mansion, however, she finds some very familiar people already occupying it. For CoLu Week 2018.

Sorry for the lateness and bulkiness of this chapter.  There’s a lot of exposition, but it’s necessary setup for a joke.  I portray the guild setup here much the same as real estate agencies (with minor differences), and it’s the setup I use as background for pretty much all of my fics.

The main joke in here is one that I have been seriously contemplating devoting an entire fic to.  It’s a fun rabbit hole to consider.

Lucy contemplated the plans spread out on the kitchen table before her.  It had somehow become their default spot for negotiation and planning, though in part that was mostly due to it being one of the only large, flat elevated surfaces left in the mansion.  Three pieces of glassware held the corners of the drawing secure and still as she inspected it, the fourth weighed down by Macbeth’s slumbering form.

There was a lot that needed to be done, it turned out, to turn a building into a functioning guild hall.

It also took a lot to turn Crime Sorciere’s present organization into a properly functioning guild model, for that matter.

Groaning, Lucy sank into her seat, plunking her head into the table in imitation of Macbeth.  “Why is this so difficult?” she wailed into the paper.

“Because everything in life is,” Cobra responded behind her.

Lucy raised her head, and turned slightly in order to level her fiercest glare at the dragon slayer.

He scoffed at her. “Is that the best you got?”

“No,” she grumbled as he sat down in the chair next to her.  “I’m just too exhausted to deal with you right now.”

“So what’s the problem today?” he inquired, peering over the plans.  “None of this makes much sense to me, but I’ll give it a shot.”

“How generous of you,” Lucy replied sarcastically.  Despite her words, she straightened up in her seat, and pointed at the upper floor of the mansion.  “We need to decide how many rooms we want to keep as bedrooms, and how many we want to convert to other purposes.  Which means figuring out whether you all wish to live here full time as the founding guild members, or do a kind of live-in plan for new members.  I think Jellal is working out the particulars with the Council, but I think he wants to turn this place into a kind of halfway house for rehabilitating mages like yourselves that have run afoul of the law.  It’s a good idea, and I’m not against the property being used for that.”

That last part was a little bit of a white lie, and one that Cobra surely picked up on, but in a rare display of kindness, chose to ignore.  “So what’s the problem, then?” he asked.

“Money.”  Lucy sighed heavily.  “I’ve already got a huge mortgage on this place, as I’m sure you’re aware.  There’s no way I can secure a construction loan on top of it.  Jellal was able to pony up a security deposit and first month’s rent when we signed the rental contract, but unless I go on a well-paid job soon, we won’t be able to afford even the smallest change to this place.”  She shrugged helplessly.  “And you know what my team is like, so saving money is a little difficult for me as it is, even without me dividing my time up between them and this place.”

Cobra hummed in thought, his eye darting over the plans and taking in the proposed alterations. “Wouldn’t it be up to us to pay for it? Since we’re the ones that need the place changed.”

“Eh.”  Lucy held up her hand and made a wobbly gesture with it. “Yes and no.  It’s my property, so capital expenditures are mine to deal with, and fixtures required for business are yours.  Which is which is where things get a little nebulous.”  She heaved another side and rubbed her temple with her fingers.  “Neither Jellal nor I really want to hire a lawyer to sort it out on our behalf, but it’s beginning to look like that will be necessary in the long run.  Though it’ll all be moot anyway if I can’t drum up enough money to hire one in the first place.”

“Sounds tough,” Cobra stated.  “How does a traditional guild make money, by the way?  Brain’s flow of income was never exactly obvious to the rest of us, and we weren’t interested besides, so I don’t really have a frame of reference.”

His interest in the matter perked Lucy’s spirits up slightly.  “It’s kind of like a pyramid structure,” she told him.  Reaching down to the pile of supplies by her feet, she placed a blank sheet of paper onto a clipboard and drew a triangle on it.

“I thought those were bad things,” Cobra muttered as he watched her draw.

“Pyramid schemes are a pretty common way of scamming people, it’s true,” agreed Lucy.  “But they’re also pretty useful for displaying money flow.” She drew two horizontal lines near the top of the triangle, sectioning off two small sections.  In the bottom, largest section, she wrote Guild Members.

She tapped that section with her pen.  “As you’re probably aware, in a typical guild structure a job is posted with a set reward, which the guild members take and earn upon completion.  What most people don’t realize, is that the monetary amount posted on the job is not actually the full amount being paid out.”  To the side of the pyramid, she scribbled Clients and wrote 1,200 Jewel under it, and then circled both.  “Say a client is willing to pay 1,200 Jewel for a job.  Of that amount, 1,000 will be posted as the reward on a job flyer, while 200 will be retained by the guild as payment for coordination services.  In addition, clients will also pay a small posting fee.”  Lucy wrote a plus sign and 50 under the 1,200 Jewel she inscribed earlier. Then she labeled the middle section Guild and wrote in 250 Jewel below it, and then added 1000 Jewel to the Guild Members section.

Glancing up, she asked, “Following me so far?”

“Sure,” Cobra said, his gaze still intent on her makeshift diagram.  “But what’s the upper section of the pyramid for?”

Lucy drew a vertical line down the middle of the final section, labeling one half Era and the other Gov.  “Guilds have to pay fees and taxes to both the country they’re located in, and to Era for services provided.  These fees and taxes go towards services for mages, and they form a large part of Era’s operating budget from what Levy and Mest have told me.”

Cobra thought about it for a moment.  “I guess that makes sense.”          

“There’s more,” Lucy warned him, and restrained a giggle at his resulting sigh. “For simplicity’s sake, let’s say that the amounts due the government and Era are fixed at 5,000 Jewel each.” Outside of the pyramid, Lucy wrote in 5,000 Jewel on each side since she hadn’t left enough room in the diagram itself.  “So basically, the Guild has to make enough money to pay off those obligations, and make enough to fund repairs to guild halls, or providing other things for mages.   Fairy Tail has a souvenir shop and a bar with a kitchen to help supplement the income from the jobs, but the margin of profit on both is actually very small if I understood Max correctly when he explained all of this to me.”

Holding up a finger, Lucy waggled it at Cobra.  “But there’s actually a second structure that some guilds use instead of this one.”

“Seriously?” Cobra muttered.  “Isn’t just having one confusing enough?”

“Apparently some guilds combine the two methods as well,” Lucy informed him. “Which I imagine makes the guild accountants cry.”

“I don’t blame them.  So what’s the other method?”

“The guild members pay a monthly fee to the guild, and keep all of the job reward.  I think there’s still a posting fee that the guilds retain, but yeah the members get to keep everything.  If they don’t go on jobs, though, they run the risk of incurring a large debt to their guild, however, so I’m not particularly fond of this method.”

“Wouldn’t you run much the same risk the other way, though?” Cobra pointed out. “If you don’t go on jobs, you won’t have money for your bills anyway.”

“I guess you have a point,” Lucy acknowledged.  “I guess it kind of depends on personal preference.”  She smiled at him.  “So… how does Crime Sorciere handle its finances?”

Cobra shrugged.  “Communal fund, maybe?  I’m not sure. Jellal keeps track of it all in his head, so I try to tune him out when he starts thinking too much on it. Usually when one of us needs something, we just ask Jellal to fork over the Jewels for it.”

Lucy blinked at him, a little gob smacked.  “And that… works for everyone…?” she ventured.

“Pretty much, yeah.”  When her stunned silence continued for longer than he liked, Cobra added, “Listen, it’s not like we’ve ever had proper spending money of our own with how we grew up. I doubt we’d know how to manage it, honestly.”

Pursing her lips, Lucy frowned.  “Call me strange, but even if you do make mistakes with your income, it’s still yours to make the mistakes with.  Financial autonomy is a pretty important thing to have, you know?”

Cobra shrugged.  “If you say so.”

Seeing that she wasn’t going to be able to press issue further with Cobra, Lucy decided to let it go for now.  “Alright, it’s your decision to make.  But maybe we should look into hiring a guild accountant before anything else, yeah? That way Jellal doesn’t have to… to keep it all in his head.”

“You’re surprised by that,” Cobra observed with delight, a cruel smile spreading across his face.  “What, is that something the great Heartfilia Heiress can’t manage herself?”

“Hell no.”  Lucy laughed at Cobra’s taken aback expression over her blunt, honest answer. “It’s a lot to keep track of.  I hire an accountant to go over my personal taxes every year.”

“Do you make them cry?” Cobra asked, his smile returning.

Lucy hesitated a second too long without responding, resulting in Cobra letting out a great laugh that filled the kitchen.  “You do, don’t you?!” he howled with laughter.

Giggles filled Lucy as she, reluctantly, admitted that Cobra had her pegged.  “Okay, you’ve got me there.  In my defense, my life is an utter mess.  So the accountant really should have realized that my finances would be, too.”

“However you wanna justify it to yourself.”

A groan emanated from the third occupant of the kitchen, the fourth paperweight on Lucy’s plans of the mansion.  “You two are too noisy,” Macbeth complained.

“Sorry,” Lucy apologized to her former enemy.  “If you prefer, I can return to talking about finances.  Maybe that will put you back to sleep?”

Her suggestion only sent Cobra into a greater fit of laughter than before and set her to grinning in wicked delight as well.  Macbeth sent Lucy a disgusted look before standing up and stalking out of the kitchen.

Privately, Lucy had to admit that Cobra had a nice laugh.

Suddenly, Cobra’s laughter ceased entirely.  “Wait a minute,” he said.  “So how is it that Fairy Tail makes any money?”  He waved her off when she opened her mouth to repeat her earlier lecture. “No, no.  I get the basic system.  But with Fairy Tail having to pay all sorts of damages and fines, how are they able to make enough money to keep the guild going?”

Lucy hesitated.  Her first instinct was to propose the bar and souvenir shop’s proceeds to make up the deficit, but then she remembered how little profit those endeavors actually made. In fact, the bar’s proceeds largely came from the members of Fairy Tail themselves.  Some of whom had racked up a significant unpaid tab.  Then, with all of the furniture that the members regularly destroyed…  Lucy had never heard of the guild members being forced to pay back the guild for any damages to guild property.  Somehow, Makarov had pulled together enough funds to completely redo the place as well back when she first joined.

“For that matter,” Cobra continued, either oblivious to the gears turning in Lucy head, or uninterested, “how is it that Fairy Tail can get away with destroying so many towns and such with pretty much no repercussions?  You’d think somebody would be pissed about their home being gone.”

Although she wished she could deny it, the fact of Fairy Tail’s destructive leanings was extremely common knowledge.  It was hard to reconcile how much Fairy Tail obliterated with the height of the guild’s popularity.

“It… it creates construction jobs…?” Lucy offered tentatively.  “Puts that back into the economy…?”

Cobra stared at her dead-on, his single violet eye unblinking.  “Is Fairy Tail getting…”

It was Lucy’s turn to cut him off.  “Let’s not finish that thought.”

He considered it for a moment, but eventually nodded.  “That sounds safer, yeah.”  Briefly shaking himself, he then shrugged and changed the subject.  “You hungry?”

“Starving.”

With that, the two tried their hardest to put their lingering suspicions out of their minds.

The NCAA tournament needs to be played in empty gyms

A virus isn’t something you can bludgeon with working groups and meetings. The NCAA needs to act

The NCAA isn’t used to doing anything quickly.

From cost of attendance, to name, image and likeness rights, to player safety, NCAA tends to act only when the legal system requires it. Otherwise, when faced with a potentially difficult decision, their impulse has been to delay, to debate, and try to draw out discussions in yet another Blue Ribbon Working Group.

You can use that trick indefinitely on, for instance, a pesky reporter. But now, the NCAA faces a crisis they can’t defeat by talking it to death: coronavirus.

They need to do something to address the public health risk posed by Covid-19. At the very least, that something should be playing the NCAA tournament behind closed doors, without big crowds.

Public health experts have made it clear they think this is the best move.

Don’t just make my word for it. I have a political science degree, which means I’m not any good at actual science. But plenty of actual scientists have said that holding any kind of large gathering right now is a bad idea.

Here’s Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, saying NBA games, as an example, should be played without crowds:

And in a story in Vice, four different public health experts, at NCAA member institutions like Michigan, Florida and Yale, all gave similar advice :

“I would encourage them to cancel this event,” said Xi Chen, a professor of public health, global health, and economics at Yale University. “The droplets can spread from person to person without touching, and people within a close distance are at high risk.

“This is very big scale. [...] And this is also an event that people may travel from. This makes the virus spread. The transmission of the virus is very much determined by the mobility of the population. We should remove such events and reduce traveling.”

Some professional sports team, like the Columbus Blue Jackets and Cleveland Cavaliers, have suggested the ventilation systems at their arenas would help minimize risk of transmission, but a leading expert at Ohio State disagrees:

Doctors and scientists aren’t the only ones concerned. Local governments have also encouraged caution.

San Fransisco is banning crowds of over 1,000. Santa Clara County enacted a similar ban. Parts of Washington State have done so too. Washington D.C. may do the same. Mike DeWine, the governor of Ohio, recommended that indoor sporting events be closed to spectators. By the time you read this post, it’s entirely possible other local officials will push for similar changes.

Plus, if NCAA member institutions think going to class is too dangerous, why are we playing basketball?

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 80 schools, dozens of them DI institutions, have taken action, doing everything from extending spring break, to making all instruction online, to in some cases, even closing the school and asking students to move off campus.

If, as the NCAA loves to argue both in court and in public, college basketball players are more student than athlete, and their schools think their participation in in-person lectures is too dangerous to their health or the health of their community, how is playing in front of 15,000 people not dangerous? How is anybody supposed to take any of the organization’s concerns about student welfare seriously, when they refuse to act in concert with the academic side of their institutions?

Other organizations have already decided that yes, playing basketball in front of large crowds is too dangerous.

The MAC and Big West announced they’ll play their conference tournaments without any fans. The Ivy League went a step further, and canceled their whole dang tournament. So did the CBI, a postseason basketball tournament played on campus sites.

If it’s too dangerous for a crowd to assemble to watch Kent State battle Ball State, surely it would be too dangerous for a much larger crowd to gather to watch other basketball teams, right?

There’s even reason to think playing these games behind closed doors won’t even cost that much money

March Madness is big business for the NCAA, no doubt about it. But most of that money comes from the tournament’s broadcast rights, not from the revenue from ticket sales, hot dogs and cokes. If you’re still showing the games on TV, you should get those huge TV checks. And the folks at Turner, who own the rights, don’t seem to be worried about their bottom line. If anything, the tournament might get even better ratings! Via Bloomberg:

Executives for CBS Sports and WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports, which recently signed an $8.8 billion extension of their tournament media rights, said any decision rests with the NCAA. Should games happen without fans, viewership would likely be unaffected, according to Jeff Zucker, chairman of AT&T Inc.’s WarnerMedia News and Sports.

“That really is not something we’re really concerned about,” Zucker said on a conference call with reporters. “If it were to come to such a point, you would probably be in a situation where much of the country would be looking to watch the games, would be home, would be looking for that outlet and that relief.

Plus, unlike some other major events that had to be canceled or postponed, the NCAA reportedly has an insurance policy that would help cover any lost revenue. Per the Bloomberg story linked above:

Donald Remy, the NCAA’s chief operating officer, said last week that the organization had business interruption insurance that it believed would cover some potential losses resulting from the outbreak.

It seems like a safe assumption that the NCAA won’t want to make any drastic changes to the tournament format because of money, but this event sounds like exactly the reason you pay large insurance premiums in the first place! It’s not like the first-round tournament games typically sell out anyway, and crowds, even if they’re allowed, would certainly be smaller than they would be in a typical year, since consumers are aware of the health risks.

Is it possible the NCAA or member institutions could lose some money by not selling any tickets? Yes. Is that a good enough reason to postpone action? No.

There’s no reason to wait for politicians or anybody else to make the decision for them. The NCAA should act now.

The NCAA is currently trying to convince members of Congress to help them preserve as much of the current amateurism model as possible, in the face of growing legal and legislative changes. That’s going to be an uphill battle under the best of circumstances, but any chance of success hinges on the organization’s ability to convince the public that they have the best interests of athletes at heart, and that the organization doesn’t exist solely as a means to generate profit.

That’s going to be an impossible argument if the NCAA refuses to heed the advice of not just federal public health experts, but the experts on the campuses of member institutions.

I’m not a doctor. But a whole bunch of doctors are getting in front of microphones right now, telling anybody who will listen that our country faces a significant public health risk, and that avoiding large crowds is an important way to protect not just ourselves, but the more vulnerable in our society.

That’s not a threat you can defeat with a working group and occasional press releases stating you’re thinking about the problem. You deal with it by addressing the problem.

It’s time for the NCAA to do just that, and announce, at the very least, that they’ll play the tournament behind closed doors.

What I have so far for my ficitional country, (Threa)

It is Post-America, but its a post america where we have resolved all issues of race, gender, money, and pretty much anything else, so now all people can complain about is clothing, and in response to the newest form of hate, the gov (needs a new name[bols?{like bolts of fabric}]) has decided to seperate everyone based on what clothes they wear. This idea soon spread to the other parts of the world and most countries have joined in Threa (To be exact, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, UK?)

So essentially there is a seperation between punk, scene, pastel, boho, vintage, and so on. Also for each subculture within the fashion, there are different places of living. Kind of like apartments.

If you want to move in a different sector if you are a minor you have to sign papers and go through a huge and very long interview process to try and find a host family to take you in. If you are an adult you have to send a notice of leave to the sect leader, and the sect leader will send you a note with a signature and a seal of the sect, then you are able to leave. But finding a new place to live in the sect you are moving to is a huge pain in the ass.

There is a police force (I may call them seq [sequins]) and they should be kind and caring police force (Should is always the key word) If you are a minor going to a new sect the police will approach you and take you to your host family so that you arrive there safely. If you are wearing clothes of another sect and are not visiting another sect, you will be approached by police.

On the outskirts of Threa there is a sect called The Mix, honestly the name of the sect states what fashion the sect is, its a mix of different fashions. People either go there to live, or to sell clothes so visitors can wear the clothes of whatever sect that they are visiting or moving to, or they can live in the mix and wear whatever they feel like. People who live in sects other than The Mix think that people who live there are horrendous (mixing clothes is looked down upon)

There is conflict betweeen sects, but mostly its just in the form of name calling, no physical violence actually happens.(Or at least thats what the Seq and Bols have the people believe{Cause the media loves not showing certain things)

Since the only type of hate is towards other fashions, its more widely accepted for Cas to be genderfluid.

The internet is still a thing, and is a part of every sector, no matter how the sector dresses (Even Vinta has the internet){even Pas}

Pas= subsector of Vinta, trying to recreate the way back fashion of Ancient Greece Vinta= (No not trying to make a dragon age reference to Tevinter{that would be really bad/stupid}) Vinta is the Vintage sector, it has many apartment like structures due to how diverse it is, actually one of the biggest sects, most labor comes from there and Gree. Topis= What we now call the internet Hau= High fashion sector Al= (pronounced 'all') Al is the Alternative fashion sector, and their subsections and divisions within those subsections almost rival Vinta in terms of number. Reb= The punk subsection for sector Al, has a great deal of divisions in it, like cyreb {cyber punk} and faereb {pastel punk} these divisions are not seen as a mix, since they were a fashion of their own in the before time [US] Cyreb= Cyber punk Faereb= Pastel punk Mim= Place for cosplayers of all kind

Backstories for my OCs.

Cas: Cas was born into sector Fae, they were afab, but they always felt like something wasnt right about them, one day they were on Topis and researching genders and sexualities and that was how the found out that they were genderfluid. They came out to their family and their father instantly accepted the fact that Cas was genderfluid, and Cas's mother accepted it but acts very awkwardly around her child. At the age of 16 Cas had started to notice that they weren't comfortable with the clothes they were wearing. Cas informed their parents, and though initially their parents could not accept this, their father understood and started to help Cas in filling out the necessary paperwork to move Cas into the Reb subsector of the Al sector. They had trouble in finding someone to take Cas in, since in the Reb sector not many adults were seen as responsible enough to take care of younger people. Cas one day complained about it in the group chat they and their friends had made, and Thalia pretty much said "Seriously? Twerp you could've just told me, I live in the Reb subsect." So after that Thalia started the paperwork to take in Cas. The paperwork was finished and Cas was approved to move to Reb. Cas said goodbye to their father, their mother now wanted nothing to do with them. Cas went to Sector Al, and Thalia was there, ready to take Cas to their new home. Thalia had a room and clothes for Cas ready. One day when Thalia was out, Cas went snooping through her things, she found some pictures of a girl and a letter that said "Bree is still doing well, stay silent and good and nothing will happen to her." Later when Thalia came home, Cas asked her about the letter and picture, initially Thalia flipped her shit and yelled at Cas for going through her things. After two days of not talking through each other, both Thalia and Cas had apologized for their actions. Thalia then explained about her past and about Bree. so went to this reenactment thing with grandparents down in the middle of fuck-all nowhere in inch deep mud. but right a few booths in comes this majestic, extensive fur and pelt stall. was just gonna look at the prices and laugh at the huge overpricing on things like tail keychains (and i did, seriously, 25$ for a scrappy coon tail? pff) but. then there were these racks and racks of pelts and. the prices were all actually really good? for nice wallhangers? and tons of them? like 10 different morphs/wild and ranch foxes (side note like I knew kit foxes were small but never -that- small i mean holy shit.) (also some of those ranch guys were as large as the coyotes wtf. they had a ranch arctic/white next to a wild and !!!!!! it was nearly taller than me and just, well, !!!!!!), bobcats, coyotes, badgers, coons, beavers, ringtails, etc etc. even a wolverine with full set of claws! (and what was either the sorriest sized, furred, and colored wolf, or just a random coyote they stuck a big sticker on, but ehh.) then going up to the actual booth to pay they have a little collection of skulls on top of everything too!

Two senators have come under fire for suspiciously timed stock market trades that came right as the market tumbled in February amid the deepening coronavirus crisis: Republican Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Kelly Loeffler of Georgia.

Both Burr and Loeffler have been accused of insider trading, and scandals such as this can have electoral repercussions, particularly if either is forced to resign. But what are the odds this might actually harm Republican chances of holding on to the Senate in November?

The GOP holds a 53-47 edge over the Democrats in the Senate,1 and while Democrats have a path to a majority, it is a narrow one. Assuming Democratic Sen. Doug Jones is unable to retain his seat in deeply Republican Alabama, Democrats will need to win four seats and also win the vice presidency to take back control. GOP incumbents facing reelection in at least four states — Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina (the other seat, not Burr’s) — look to be in some danger, so Democrats might be able to thread the needle, especially if they can also win a seat in a state like Iowa or Montana. But it would certainly help Democratic chances if more Republican-held seats came into serious contention, which is where Burr and Loeffler might come in.

Let’s start with Burr. As chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, he was privy to daily briefings on the coronavirus before it seriously hit the U.S. On Feb. 13, the senator sold off a huge share of his portfolio just before the stock market crashed. The Justice Department is now investigating Burr, and last Wednesday, the FBI seized a cellphone owned by the senator. On Thursday, Burr announced he was temporarily stepping aside as chairman of the Intelligence Committee during the ongoing investigation.

The question now is, will Burr resign? Burr’s seat isn’t up until 2022, but he could be forced out of office because of the scandal, and if he were, the timing of his departure could definitely affect the 2020 election.

Namely, if Burr resigned before Sept. 4, there would be a special election for the seat this November, which would add another battleground contest to the Senate map. North Carolina’s other seat — held by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis — is already shaping up to be an expensive, hard-fought contest, so another special election in the Tar Heel State could mean double trouble for Republicans. It’s no wonder Tillis has tried to separate himself from the embattled Burr, saying in April that Burr “owes everybody” an explanation for the stock sales. And public opinion is against Burr, too, at least based on polling from a couple of left-leaning firms. In two March surveys of North Carolina from Data for Progress and Public Policy Polling, half of the respondents said Burr should resign while only about a quarter said he shouldn’t.

However, even if some Republicans might want him gone, it seems unlikely Burr would leave office soon enough to necessitate a special election this November, as Republicans really don’t want another swing seat in play this year. But if Burr’s position were to become untenable and he was forced to resign before Sept. 4, a Republican would still be appointed in his place even though North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is a Democrat. North Carolina law requires the governor to appoint a replacement from a list of three candidates named by the incumbent party. (Regardless of when a resignation occurred, Cooper would have to appoint a Republican. But if the resignation happened after Sept. 4, the seat wouldn’t be up for election until 2022.)

As for Loeffler, she was already up for election in Georgia this November, so a stock trading scandal could hit her hard. Loeffler has said that third-party account managers handle her portfolio, so she had no input in the trades, but the same day she attended a classified briefing about the coronavirus, she and her husband started selling millions of dollars worth of stock and invested in companies positioned to do well during the pandemic. Loeffler hasn’t said whether the FBI has contacted her, but she provided records of the stock trades to the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Senate Ethics Committee.

Loeffler already appears to be quite vulnerable in her special election, too, which will be the first time she faces voters since Republican Gov. Brian Kemp appointed her to the Senate in January. A late April GOP internal poll conducted by Cygnal found that only 20 percent of voters had a favorable view of Loeffler compared to 47 percent who had an unfavorable impression. The survey also found her with just 11 percent support, well behind Republican Rep. Doug Collins’s 29 percent. (If that seems especially low, remember the special election is a jungle primary in which all candidates run regardless of party.)

Granted, the Cygnal poll’s sponsor is allied to Collins, but even a survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies on behalf of a group backing Loeffler ally Kemp found her polling at only 18 percent in the special election, about tied with Collins, who had 19 percent. For his part, Collins has been only too happy to try to connect Burr’s case to Loeffler and attack Loeffler over her own stock dealings.

It’s unclear, though, just how much Loeffler’s problems would harm the GOP’s chances of retaining the seat. That is, just because Loeffler may be in trouble, it doesn’t mean it’ll be easy for Democrats to take over the seat. After all, Georgia still leans toward the GOP and although former state Rep. Stacey Abrams came close to defeating Kemp in 2018, the last time a Democrat won a statewide election was in 2006. At this point, major election handicappers still think Republicans will hold the seat.

That said, with six Republicans and eight Democrats on the ballot in the jungle primary (plus six third-party or independent candidates), it’s also pretty unlikely that one candidate will win an outright majority in November, which means it’s likely headed to a runoff in January 2021 anyway. Based on early polling, Collins may be the most likely Republican to advance to a runoff, and he might be as good a bet — or a better one given Loeffler’s troubles — for Republicans to hold on to the seat, especially as Georgia Democrats have historically struggled in general election runoffs. In fact, with eight Democrats running, there’s even a chance that it will be Collins and Loeffler who advance to the runoff, ensuring continued Republican control of the seat.

It’s worth noting Burr and Loeffler aren’t the only senators who have come under scrutiny for their stock trades. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California recently spoke with FBI investigators regarding deals made by her husband, and suspiciously timed stock moves made by Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma have also received attention. However, both the California and Oklahoma seats would be very unlikely to switch parties — California being very Democratic, Oklahoma being very Republican — so even if Feinstein or Inhofe got into trouble, their problems would be very unlikely to affect the makeup of the Senate. That’s not necessarily the case for Burr and Loeffler — especially Burr if he were to resign before Sept. 4. Nonetheless, it’s still a longshot that likely won’t alter the Senate election math in 2020, either.

But this is not a perfect world.” By trying to come off as the only adult in the room — the pragmatist who understands that the game is rigged but chooses to play it anyway — Cuomo instead reveals that he has no interest in making systemic changes to an inherently flawed system.

That brings us to the next band of seemingly unrealistic critics: “the socialists.”

These critics, Cuomo claims, are mad that New Yorkers are giving billions of dollars in subsidies to “one of the richest men in the country” instead of using those funds to provide services for “the poor and the needy.” This argument, while “politically appealing” and well-intentioned, is “once again wrong.”

“We give Amazon nothing and their revenues give us approximately $900 million annually,” Cuomo wrote, repeating a claim he made at a press conference last week announcing the Amazon deal. According to Cuomo’s calculations, New York isn’t really “giving” Amazon anything because the state will recoup $9 in revenue for every dollar given to Amazon in tax breaks and other subsidies. But that doesn’t mean that New York is giving Amazon nothing. In a blog post announcing its HQ2 selections, Amazon said New York state is giving Amazon the equivalent of “$48,000 per job for 25,000 jobs.” The state government is giving Amazon $1.7 billion in tax breaks and other incentives; the city is chipping in an additional $1.3 billion.

Assuming that Cuomo’s 9-to-1 calculation is correct, that figure still presumes that no other company would build on the land that has been set aside for Amazon. (The governor also claimed that New York would stand to “lose $900 million” if Amazon had decided to go somewhere else. It’s worth noting that not getting something is not the same as losing it.)

On a Monday segment of WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show, Cuomo repeated many of the arguments outlined in his op-ed, noting that people are right to be concerned about the state’s affordable housing crisis and the state of public transportation in New York City, but once again framing the Amazon deal as a net win for New Yorkers. “We won a competition that everyone was competing with, literally,” said Cuomo. “The upside was so huge — 25,000 jobs. We haven’t had a transaction like that in modern history.”

The governor was less clear on whether those 25,000 jobs would actually benefit New Yorkers. At one point, he said that the 25,000 figure would be added to New York’s existing population of 8 million, suggesting that Amazon wouldn’t be hiring from inside the city, or even inside the state. (“Forget the 25,000 additional people on 8 million,” he said. “We need to build more [housing] units.”) A few minutes later, though, he said that those high-paying Amazon jobs would go to New Yorkers. “Your assumption is that these 25,000 people are going to come from a different state; my assumption is that the 25,000 people are here now … These are good jobs for New Yorkers. It’s not a mass invasion of people from outside the state.” (A spokesperson for Cuomo did not respond to The Goods’ request for comment.)

But Amazon doesn’t have to hire locally if it doesn’t want to. Amazon may say it will hire New Yorkers — and that it will have job fairs to encourage people from “nontraditional backgrounds,” including residents of the nearby Queensbridge Houses and other public housing developments — but there’s no legal requirement for it to do so.

Cuomo seems to think that those who oppose the Amazon deal are refusing to engage with reality and looking for something to be outraged about. “I understand the current political intensity. This is a time of anger, frustration, and hyper-political extremes,” Cuomo wrote in his op-ed. “Symbolism reigns over reality. However, the bottom line is the bottom line, and facts are still facts.”

Other champions of the Amazon deal, though, are making a case for it as a progressive, forward-thinking company — and relying on the same political symbolism Cuomo claims to oppose.

In an interview with New York Magazine published Monday, Alicia Glen, the city’s deputy mayor for housing and urban development, disregarded the notion that Amazon’s New York expansion would hurt working-class people.

According to Glen, Amazon is creating “thousands of high-paying jobs that would have otherwise been unavailable to New Yorkers.” (Nearly half of all tech workers in the city are foreign-born, Glen noted, and 40 percent are women. The assumption here seems to be that Amazon is good for immigrants and for women, and therefore immune to progressive opposition.) And even those who don’t get hired by Amazon stand to benefit from the “public benefits” the deal will bring, including additional funding for tech education and a waterfront park. “[I]f there’s anybody who thinks that creating more jobs that pay a lot of money, if that’s a bad thing, then we’ve really lost the forest for the trees,” said Glen.

But as Vox’s Matt Yglesias has written in the past, adding high-paying jobs to expensive cities is, at best, a mixed bag:

Over a decade ago, housing economists Janna Matlack and Jacob Vigdor investigated the economic impact of unequal economic development and found that “in tight housing markets, the poor do worse when the rich get richer.” A “tight” housing market, in this case, is a market like New York or greater Washington, where the cost of buying a house greatly exceeds the actual construction costs of new buildings. The problem in markets like these is that when the rich get richer — say because a new office complex opens and hires 20,000 to 30,000 people for six-figure salaries — the price of scarce housing rises.

If you actually get a job at Amazon or have the kind of job skills that you could plausibly get a job at Amazon, this will pay off for you because you’ll end up with higher wages that more than equal the higher rent. But if you work in a restaurant or cut hair or clean houses or drive a cab, you’ll probably end up worse off.

Glen claimed this wouldn’t be the case in New York City, because it’s “the exact polar opposite” of tech hubs like Seattle and Silicon Valley when it comes to affordable housing. “For the past four years, we’ve been the leader in affordable housing policy, if not in the country, in the goddamn world,” Glen said. “We have fundamentally changed the game, and so the lessons and the issues that are legitimately making people freak out on the West Coast simply don’t apply here.”

Even if New York is building more affordable housing units than Seattle or the Bay Area, it’s not enough to ward off the city’s ongoing housing crisis. A September report by Comptroller Scott Stringer’s office found that, as rents continue to climb, the amount of low-cost apartments continues to decline. Meanwhile, the city’s adult population continues to rise — and there aren’t enough apartments, affordable or otherwise, to meet the demand.

The affordable and subsidized housing that does exist isn’t without its own set of problems. Tenants who live in rent-controlled apartments are often subject to harassment by landlords who want to replace them with high-paying renters. Residents of the city’s public housing developments, meanwhile, often lack heat and hot water and are exposed to dangerous amounts of lead. The addition of 25,000 new, well-paid residents could make things worse for residents of public housing.

Glen’s suggestion that what’s good for white-collar tech workers is good for all New Yorkers is easily disproved by the city’s vast — and growing — inequality rate. As rich New Yorkers get richer, a growing number of households are “just one paycheck away from disaster,” as Kevin Baker wrote for Harper’s in July. Adding “more jobs that pay a lot of money” to New York’s economy, as Glen said, won’t necessarily make things better for the people who aren’t in the running to get those jobs in the first place.

During his weekly “Ask the Mayor” segment on WNYC last week, Bill de Blasio defended the HQ2 deal by claiming that Amazon is a better corporation than many of its competitors.

“I’m going to ask all New Yorkers and particularly my fellow progressives to look carefully at what’s similar and what’s different here,” de Blasio said on the show, as per Crain’s New York. “Whatever you like or dislike about Amazon, Walmart is an entirely different universe, in terms of the systematic efforts they have undertaken to not only undermine labor, small businesses, the environment, American workers — and obviously the politics of the Walton family add to it.”

But much like Walmart — which has long been known for its substandard wages, erratic “flexible” scheduling, and anti-union stance — Amazon has also reportedly taken efforts to undermine both organized labor and small businesses. In September, Gizmodo obtained footage from an anti-union video Amazon sent to Whole Foods team leaders, which reveals the company’s anti-union stance. “We don’t believe unions are in the best interest of our customers, our shareholders, or most importantly, our associates,” the video says.

Employees from Amazon’s warehouses across the country have reported exploitative conditions, backbreaking labor, and low pay. In 2013, a warehouse employee died of dysrhythmia in one of the company’s Virginia fulfillment centers. The company’s stance on medical emergencies at the time, as per a Tennessee employee handbook: “Do Not call 911! Tell Security the nature of the medical emergency and location. Security and/or Amcare will provide emergency response.”

The big difference between Amazon and Walmart, as de Blasio unwittingly pointed out, is superficial. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s billionaire founder and CEO, has reportedly donated millions of dollars to pro-LGBTQ campaigns, as well as thousands to Democratic candidates. (He’s also donated to a few Republicans.) In January, Bezos donated $33 million to a scholarship fund for undocumented students, just days after a federal judge blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

More recently, though, Amazon pitched its facial recognition system to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While Bezos donates to pro-immigrant causes, his company appears to want to help the Trump administration round them up so they can be deported. And after Sen. Bernie Sanders called Bezos one of the biggest recipients of corporate welfare, Amazon voluntarily raised its minimum wage to $15 per hour.

The notion that Bezos’s politics are more progressive than the Waltons’ is — to borrow Cuomo’s rhetoric — rooted in symbolism that reigns over reality. Amazon may hire women and immigrants, and it may even hire public housing residents, but these reasons alone don’t make HQ2 a good deal.

Instead of addressing the questions New Yorkers have raised about Amazon’s forthcoming expansion, Cuomo, de Blasio, and Glen are all using condescending doublespeak to dismiss their constituents’ concerns. If Amazon were truly a good deal, there would be no need to obscure the truth.

Yeah it’s been a hot minute since I last updated. and of course I’m going to write a ton, but not nearly as much as what has passed.

So yesterday (friday), before I went to class I checked the weather app to decide which jacket to wear, and saw that it was going to rain around 3pm. I only had one class, so I figured I’d go to it, then stay at the library for a while, get a mango smoothie, and see if I can get some homework done. Like, three hours into sitting there, I had still done close to no homework, rather listened to kris wu’s new album (can you believe the nerve of that guy? He really released his album on the same day as exo, and you can tell that shit was intentional like he wanted to overshadow them (and he sure did, even posted a pic of the itunes charts where his album was #1 while exo’s was #4) lmao petty af) I also started to listen to all of my music in my itunes library, starting with most played and going down. I haven’t even made a dent btw, I have like, some odd 5 whole days of music to go through. Around 4 I figured I should get heading home, so that I don’t have to face the worst of rush hour traffic. Of course, just as I’m stepping out of the library, rose texted me saying it was pouring on the west side. The clouds on campus looked troublesome, but I figured it wouldn’t be too bad.

It was. I stopped by a gas station, and as I got there it started raining. Honestly, on the drive home, the rain wasn’t my biggest problem (I’ve driven in pouring rain so often that I don’t care about getting wet any more), it was the wind. It seriously almost knocked my bike clean over. And it didn’t help that the rain impacted my engine and made it struggle to speed up properly. I really thought I might have gotten into an accident, it was that bad. But as you can see by me typing this, I’m just fine. I took a hot shower, ate dinner, then receded back to my room as always. I brought with me a cup of instant coffee (seriously, cafe bustelo instant coffee is leagues better than regular drip coffee, like what the hell.) and started a kdrama that yoongi recommended called stranger. The dramafever app has been giving me issues recently, so I decided to watch it on my laptop. But when I went to the website, it displayed a message saying they shut down like two weeks ago. Sure shows how little I use that subscription that I didn’t even notice lmao. Luckily the show was also on netflix, so I watched it there. 

I didn’t even consider that maybe I shouldn’t drink coffee before bed, until like 12:30 am. I tried to go to bed around 10:30, but just couldn’t sleep no matter what. At first I thought it was because of small noises like mom doing the dishes or pulling a chair out (and it was irritating the living hell out of me- i wanted to go out there and scream that I was trying to sleep and they needed to stop making noise), but then I remembered the coffee, and how the same thing happened a few months ago. I took some cold medicine to help knock myself out, and set a second alarm just in case.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t that hard for me to wake up despite getting like 5.5 hours of sleep (I mean I did sleep in for an additional 30 mins after the first alarm, but I didn’t feel like I was dying). I left for work 15 minutes early, just in case my bike gave me any issues. I was on cash at work (UGH), which was made even worse now that we don’t get to go to MIMO. I was literally in front of a register for 7.5 hours, when usually it only used to be like 6, with the trip to MIMO accounted for (and the closing cashiers taking over). I was nonstop leaving to go to the bathroom to make up for it, though. 

It’s unbelievable, the lengths to which rose will put other people above me. She mentioned that she was going to go out to the mall to buy a gift for peter’s birthday, and I asked if I could come along because peter’s my bro too and I wanted to get him a gift. But she pulled the whole “uh yeah, you can come if you want” and i was like. if you don’t want me to come, just say so. and she was like “oh you know it was just gonna be like, me and peter and I don’t want to go inviting people by myself” as if she hasn’t invited peter and paul into our hangout times before (matter of fact, there was one time when it was literally just supposed to be me and rose and she dragged peter along, peter and I began to argue, AND SHE SAID SHE DIDN”T WANT TO GET INVOLVED AND SPENT THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON HANGING WITH HIM. but hey whatever, fuck jay right?) and also as if they were hanging out as friends and not with the purpose of buying peter a gift. She also mentioned how paul was planning to finesse something (also huge pet peeve: paul needs to stop calling it “finessing,” just say you fucking stole it.) I mentioned how I seriously didn’t want to move in with paul. Like, rose peter and I all have responsibilities and bills to pay, meanwhile paul still gets spoon fed by his parents. Do I really want to risk my housing and credit score by signing a lease with some kid who hasn’t paid rent his entire life? Hell no. And yeah, the fact that he has no conscience and openly steals is a huge issue for me. Rose tried to brush it off but I kept pushing it, saying that it was a deal breaker for me. She said that “we’ve been planning to move in together for a really long time” and i’m fucking livid. Who is “we”???? Her, peter, and paul???? As if her, me and GIO didn’t plan on moving in together last year? Why does paul get precedence over me when rose and I have been planning to move out together for over a year before she even met him??? Whatever, I’m looking at clara’s lease ending soon, she said she’s looking for roommates. 

I know I’ve probably said this a million times, but I hate family dinners. It’s just so damn obvious that they all want me dead. I always get the least amount of food, nobody talks to me, and nobody cares when I leave halfway through. I spilled my glass trying to put in ice, but didn’t bother to wipe it up. I just really don’t care, it’s not like I’m at the table long enough for it to bother me anyways.

Alright now I’m gonna really quickly hop over to the last update to see what I left off at. So the first thing I feel like I want to talk about (I think it’ll be better if I go from one topic to another, rather than try to do it chronologically) is heather. So I don’t remember if I wrote about this (and I’m not gonna read all my updates to find out), but one time on a friday heather and I made plans to meet up at the library. I texted her that day asking if we could instead meet at the student union (needed to stop by the atm to get rent money), and she didn’t reply (it said “delivered though). I got a call from my boss asking if I could come in early, and I was like yea sure since by then heather hadn’t even opened my message and it was about 30 mins from her next class. I walked through the breezeway, and as I walked I saw her, walking with someone else (prob a classmate) and talking, just hanging out. I dipped into the bathroom so she wouldn’t see me. She later texted me (one minute before her next class started) saying “sorry, my phone died and I just now got this message.” I guess she didn’t know that iphones tell you if the message was delivered to the other person’s phone. yeah, it does kind of hurt, that she bailed on me. it feels like I’m a second option, and if given the chance, she’d hang with other people. Since then, we met up like, once in the last month. In the last two weeks or so, I haven’t seen her at all. She just keeps saying “sorry, I’m too busy now” or “sorry, I didn’t see your message.” I asked if I could borrow her textbook for the gov exam, and she said she had a problem with the rental company and had to temporarily return it. I got a 74 on the exam, by the way. I figure maybe I just shouldn’t message her any more; if she wants to hang with me she’ll message me first.

Speaking of friends, I posted a pic on ig the other day. It’s a far away shot of me that rose took, sitting in the corner of a cafe. The caption was just “let’s get this (bread emoji)” ya know, just a dumb phrase. Anjlie liked it, and I was like... why. I looked at her profile (I unfollowed her long ago so I haven’t kept up with her feed) and she’s changed from 2014 low-saturation tumblr aesthetic to wannabe ig famous aesthetic. Also, she’s tagged this one girl in a lot of her captions. I can tell they’re friends, but it looks like the other girl doesn’t tag her back in nearly as much of her photos. Anjlie was always kind of socially anxious, it seems like she’s made one (1) friend in college that she’s completely attached herself to.

So, my motorcycle. Yeah, I changed the air filter, but it didn’t really affect it. Then I changed the spark plugs (also have to do with gas combustion), didn’t really see an improvement either (but MAN you should see these spark plugs, they’re entirely rust). I figured maybe it’s because the gas tube has a u-shaped curve in it, maybe it’s having trouble lifting the gas back up. So I changed it, and the next day when I walked back to my bike the gas had drained nearly completely onto the ground via a leak that I couldn’t find for the life of me. When I first walked up to my bike I saw some guy standing around kind of suspiciously and got worried, but then when I saw the leak he was like “is this your bike? I was calling parking services because I was concerned about the leak.” I ended up leaving my bike there for nearly a week (and took the city bus to school instead, since obvs I couldn’t drive) before I could get a tow truck called. i knew it was the carbureator by this point due to additional research, and I tried to fix it myself right there in the parking lot, but one of the screws was stripped so I took it to the mechanic and told him there was a leak because of the carbureator. one day when I took an uber home from work, I slammed my thumb in the car door and it bled so fucking bad. I cried like a bitch. It felt like I was nancy kerrigan, because my bike was going to be repaired soon but I couldn’t drive it because nail. But the bike got “fixed,” in which the mechanic said that the issue was the gas filter which was kind of weak. I was like yea I replaced the gas filter myself, but I used the same kind as before so that’s not the issue. and of course the leak didn’t go away. So I brought the bike back and was like “there’s a problem in the carbureator. please clean and rebuild it. don’t try to diagnose anything because I’ve told you before that the issue is the carbureator and you won’t listen.” he held onto the bike for a week and said “it’s the accelerator pump.” i told him to also clean the fucking carb and he finally did (for $267). I told iris and nick how I wanted to just buy a new bike and they were all “oh no that’s too expensive” as if I haven’t spent over $800 in repairs the last two months. And I didn’t even ask for advice from those people, anyways. 

I did call in, for like all of my remaining usf shifts. I’m now officially ioa exclusive, as a result of my incessant bitching about how much I hate usf. And I got cross trained as a cook at cinnabon!!!!! I’ve done a shit job so far tho, I always underestimate the number of buns needed and then end up running out. Tomorrow I have a shift at cinnabon tho, so I can finally redeem myself. Next week I’m scheduled for tuesday and friday too, so I guess my availability didn’t get 100% approved. It’s okay though, one more month until the semester is over and I can change my availability again to weekends only for real for real this time. I’m also going to take up delivering for postmates. they allow motorcycles, so between classes and in the evening I’m gonna deliver. they say you can make on average 10-15 an hour, which is pretty decent considering I’m mostly going to be driving. And even though they don’t reimburse you gas money, I get 80 mpg so I think I’m good. The other day was my enrollment appointment for spring. I already had a schedule ready, just needed to press submit. but then rose was like “oh can you pls pick up peter he doesn’t have a car” and it made me 13 minutes late and all the classes I chose were full. So I had to pick a new schedule, where the first class is at 7:30 am and the last class gets out at 7:15 pm. With like, a 4-hour gap in the middle. Kill me.

I don’t think I have many other topics to cover. I submitted my second paper in english, and next week I submit the last. I bought new toothpaste the other day. still looking to move out (but now, planning to wait till like january). still depressed as shit. but hey, let’s just play it by ear.
