BLACK SAILS (2014-2017) | FOUNDATION (2021-) Of all the stories my mother used to tell me at bedtime, the black hole frightened me the most. It wasn’t the darkness that scared me. I was comfortable in darkness. It was the idea of an event horizon. Venture into that horizon, and the gravitational pull prevents you from turning back. Escape becomes impossible.

I just wrote a whole ramble vent meta thing about John Silver and how I get irritated when ppl don't give his character the same amount of consideration or attention or sympathy as Flint only to come around to, "Well Jay, that's sort of the point of the structure of the narrative is for us to ignore him and write him off and gloss over him as we're watching Flint, glued to Flint, until suddenly Silver is at the center of it all and neither the other characters nor the audience are quite sure how it happened like some three card monte magic trick"

I've watched 3 episodes of Black Sails tonight, and I had to stop myself from watching a 4th. I blame @transgods for this, but I'm not mad about it, aksjdaskdjas.
Character opinion update: I'm fucking fascinated by Anne. I need to know more about her, and fast. John is a prick, but he's an amusing one, so it works. I still hate Vane, but that's kind of the point. Mr. Guthrie sucks and I would like to stab him. I'm still invested in Flint and Silver and Billy, and love all three of them. Oh and Eleanor. I love Eleanor. She's stubborn as hell, and we all know I love stubborn characters. Especially those who are so stubborn it just might ruin them. And I hope so bad that Max gets to murder people. Yk, as a treat. She deserves the world.
And, of course, this show is providing me with entirely too much information about pirates and sailing, which is a bad thing because it only fuels my daydreaming about Rook's time as a pirate, both past and potential future.

in s3e4, when silver is taken from the cages to speak to madi, he says he has 2 dozen men in cages (4 having been killed already) ... granted this is post-becalming and 2 men were killed there. flint kills one man in the storm when he cuts free the fore topgallant. one guy goes falls into the ocean when billy and the others on the yards when they get dunked. and muldoon dies. so that puts us at a conservative estimate of 34 walrusmen ± 3 if you think silver included himself, billy, and flint in his estimate of the men in the cages. which doesnt seem to be NEARLY enough for a ship of that size. the walrus is a fully rigged barque from what i can tell - triple masted, square rigged, with the mizzenmast partly fore-and-aft rigged. the wiki lists the walrus as having 60-70 men which makes more sense, but pirate crews were noted to have an excess of men to reduce work (compared to the navy, where ships would only be manned w necessary numbers of men). i guess they could have managed thru the storm w only ~35 men? more may have died offscreen from the storm or starved i suppose

the thing is. the thing is that silver really thought thomas would be enough for flint to give up his cause of his own volition, his very essence for the last decade of his life, even just hypothetically, and dared to ask if he himself would be enough for madi to give up her's because they were enough for silver to do it first. the entire shape of long john silver was built on causes he didn't even care about because they cared about them first, and he cared about them. he remade himself for them like rocks under water to the point he didn't realize he truly thought they might do the same until it was too late. the thing is he was only able to reshape himself so easily around them because he had no original shape to begin with.

me, in a lunch meeting, surrounded by people with significantly higher titles than myself, unprompted*: Have you heard of this cool show, it's called Black Sails?
*Note: It was somewhat prompted in that someone remarked that Succession is wild how they get you to sympathize with certain characters even as they do horrific things and I went, "This is my moment."

personal taste is so weird… the fact that i LOVE symbolism, but a story has to strike the right balance of symbolism to character meat for it to actually Get Me. i LIKE on-the-nose metaphors and silly, overwritten dialogue and find it charming, but ONLY if the story Gets Me, otherwise it’s unnecessarily patronizing. my subjective opinions are a mystery even to myself.

So I think when we as Black Sails fans recommend the show as, "oh, you just need to get through the first season where it's trying to be Game of Thrones with pirates, it gets good in season 2" we do it a disservice. Because yes, it does get a little bit 2edgy4u while it finds its feet, but the magnificent writing, the characters, the themes, they're all right there from episode 1.
