Top five small birds go

PICKING ONLY 5 is CRUEL but I don't have time for 10. Species names will have the links to photo sources where applicable.

Long-tailed Manakin. They take like 4-5 years for the males to learn their dances and each year they look a little more like adults to match their experience! They are little and yet have very long tails!! And cute little caps! Very elegant tiny birds.

2. Wrentit. Look past the plain gray exterior, let me teach you some BIRD FACTS because these guys are basically aliens. They live in a very small part of the west coast of North America in scrub/chaparral, and we still don't really know how they got there or where their nearest relatives are or what birds they're even related to, though recently they think maybe it's parrotbills, which are otherwise mostly found in SE Asia.

During the breeding season, most female birds develop a brood patch, a section of bare skin on the belly for aiding in heat transfer to the eggs, and most male birds develop a swollen cloaca to facilitate sperm transfer. In some species where males help incubate, they also get brood patches. This is fine. Male Wrentits get brood patches. A little weird but not too crazy. Female Wrentits, however, get a swollen cloaca? Why?? Nothing else in North America does this? I don't.... understand.

Also they're cute, they have a song that's like a bouncy ball going down stairs, and males and females have slightly different songs, so even though we can't determine the sex in the hand like with normal birds, at least if they sing you can tell. Normal birds don't sing when being handled. Wrentits definitely sometimes do. I don't get it. But I love them for it.

3. Calliope Hummingbird. Itty bitty tiny creature, would absolutely spear you to death with its face if it thought it could pull that off. Hummingbirds in general are territorial and aggressive and these guys are no exception. Also they're beautiful. Look at that starburst of a face!

4. Java Sparrow. Help, I'm hopelessly charmed by how adorable they are. Unfortunately, apparently everyone else is too, and these are now critically endangered in their home range of Java due to habitat loss and poaching for the pet trade. The good?? news is they're also super invasive in places like Hawaii, so they're not about to go globally extinct, so that's cool, I guess.

5. Micronesian Rufous Fantail, formerly just Rufous Fantail, aka chichirika na'abak because look I don't know proper indigenous names for everything but I do for my study birds and I support their use. Chichirika is CHamoru for "showoff" and na'abak is "the one who will lead you astray", after the local stories of kids trying to follow these delightful little low-flitting creatures through the jungles and getting hopelessly lost, leading to village search parties.

Anyway, look at that tail!! Go listen to their cute little squeaks! I'm absolutely in love. I've banded literal hundreds of these and they never ever get old. Every single one of them is a treasure to me.

That first one I actually did while a guest was on hold with a third party at work (we were waiting for them to call me to fix an issue). We waited on them for literally an hour!

I am on season 3 now, and having a Time. That is for sure. Jon is being. Not that smart. Bless his heart. Of course Jude was gonna burn you if you shook her hand. You already knew that but you did it anyway!

I need to shake him. Like a maraca. Mabe that'll knock some sense back into him. ALSO. Assistants recording statements!! I like! That!

I think it's cool to hear how differently they get into it, like Tim couldn't get into it enough to get through one, which at this point doesn't honestly surprise me, he is not having any of this rn.

When Martin reads them, he gets very into it! Emulating them emotion in the statement kinda like when Jon gets into it, (I think that Martin's readings are the most similar to Jon's so far). And his little "sorry for the change in tone bit", I just. He's so Much. To me.

Melanie gets hit hard by the statement when she reads it. You can hear how shaken up she is by it while she's reading, he voice kinda trembles. I really do feel bad for her, she didn't really know what she was getting herself into, and now she's trapped. The others tried to warn her.

AND. THE FUCKING. AUGH. COLLATERAL. ELIAS YOU FUCKER. POOR BASHIRA. Daisy and Bashira are something. I like them.

And. The way that Tim got sick trying to leave. Grabgrabgrabgrabgrab. Guess Jon would have gotten ill if he hadn't read the statments that were sent to him? That and his other investigations.

AND. GEORGIE AND THE ADMIRAL. I LOVE THEM. I like Georgie a lot, she seems cool to me. And of course I adore a good Kitty. Admiral beloved.

The calliope is spookin me, but also I am excited for Jon to get into more situations lmao. This man is the most unfortunate fellow you could meet.

I have been taking a tiny break and it's late, so my commentary is not that profound, lmao. I am enjoying it a good deal, though. And I have been irritating the shit out of my siblings recommending it to them.

I actually haven’t thought a ton about them since the concert so thank you for bringing them up! I immediately kind of imprinted on this post by @slippy-socks and so I’ll be using/referring to those names and designs and elements bc YEAHHHHHH GHOULETTES OF OTHER ELEMENTS FUCKING FINALLY

Anyways now that I have solid headcanons I can add them to every growing list of ways to make them weird bc oh I’ve been thinking as I’ve been writing this (puts on my t shirt that says ask me about the LA ghoulettes)

Headcanons under cut for length!

Calliope - vocals/ quintessence

I think Callie is more of a traditional quint personality wise. Very intellectual and likes structure. She’s just a more serious gal! Obviously gets along well with aether, they’re kinda book besties when she’s summoned, sharing different books on the stars and magic and other interesting things about the world. She thinks phantom is cute in that aspect. Helping him create maps of the stars in his room with stupid stickers he found. I think Callie’s quintessence revolves more around astral ideas as opposed to medical and body wise like aether and shadow wise like phantom.

She’s a very calm entity I think. She leans femme. Sweet and low energy but with a stoic commanding respect nature to her. She prefers to be alone or with another low energy individual such as aether or rain.

Eden- piano / earth

eden likes mischief. Can be a bit egotistical. Perfectionist and takes her instrument very seriously and can be annoyed when some of the other ghouls tend to mess around more.

She’s very honest, one to not beat around the bush. Gives amazing advice but won’t just tell you what you want to hear, will tell you what you need to hear.

Despite her more aloof side, she is very physical! She loves physical contact, and often has her arm around another ghoul or is on someone’s lap or is holding someone’s hand.

She enjoys hanging around dew, they feed off of each others more chaotic sides and get into friendly competitions that have the other swearing up and down the other is cheating

Loire- cello/ water

Another more introverted ghoulette. Shy and timid and tends to hang around Callie more as she feels she’s more safe and stable.

I don’t think she talks much, simply content on hanging around, partially mute, goes quiet when she gets overwhelmed. I think she has a lot of feelings and tends to shut down a bit, but she’s trying her best

Sweetheart when she’s comfortable with you. Very much is an acts of service gal. Getting another ghoul a drink or a snack or sewing up ripped clothes without asking, cleaning rooms when she sees they’re in a bit of disarray, she likes to stay busy by helping out her pack.

Tends to be seen more around Callie, cirrus and mountain as they feel the most grounded to her.

Soleil- cello/ fire

she’s a bimbo

You’ve seen ifrit the himbo? This is soleil the bimbo.

She’s sweet and strong and kinda stupid. Very extroverted. Loves her pack immensely.

Obviously can be a bit hot headed, her and Eden share an ego and are often together because of it, Eden being more competitive while sol is there to kinda have fun and see how far she can push Eden to be better.

She’s such a supporter, constantly cheering on the other ghouls, loves to compliment them and tell them how amazing they are (can be a bit aggressive but … she’s trying her best)

Like the other beloved himbos, is not allowed in the kitchen or the greenhouse because of multiple incidents (cough, dews a bad influence, cough)

Often seen around Swiss, Eden and cumulus because of their brighter personalities

Okay, first and foremost Morpheus and Calliope have come to an understanding that, while they both could have done more to help Orpheus, at the end of the day, his choices were his own. If they can't stop resenting each other for the death of their son/reconcile those feelings, there is no hope for any sort of relationship. So, for the sake of these headcanons and the continuity from my previous fic, they've worked through these issues.

(I do think that, had things gone differently and pride not gotten in the way, they would have been able to have these discussions like calm, rational adults)

ANYWAYS

You all come to the realization that you care for each other romantically on your own, and it makes things extremely awkward for a good moment

For you especially, where monogamy is likely all you grew up with/all you know

Morpheus and Calliope are no strangers to the idea of sharing or having multiple partners: many gods and goddesses and mythical creatures happily participate in it

Also they may or may not have had a third in their bed a few times who knows

But they're as aware that you're a mortal as you are, and just sort of automatically assume that you wouldn't be interested in both of them

They're each prepared to fight each other for your affection, even as they ignore the return of feelings for each other that they thought long gone

All in all, there's a lot of angst for everyone before you all remember that you have two hands each

Speaking of hands, Calliope loves holding yours!

She's usually always touching you in some way, whether that be her hand holding yours or your arms linked together, a hand on your lower back or your bodies pressed together when you're sitting next to each other

Physical touch is not one of Morpheus's love languages, so his touches are softer and more fleeting

Though his touches are nothing like Calliope's, they're just as sweet and appreciated

PET. NAMES. So many pet names!

Calliope calls you things like treasure, sweetest, sweetheart, lovely

Morpheus enjoys calling you beloved, my heart, dearest, starlight

Calliope and Morpheus have their own names for each other, old endearments in languages you could never begin to understand

It's rather sweet, actually

When you sleep or rest in bed with both of your lovers, it's usually you or Calliope in the middle

(Morpheus feels too trapped)

The three of you spend a lot of time together, but most of the time it's in the Dreaming, which is most convenient for all parties when two of the three are important cosmic beings

Lots of long walks in Fiddler's Green or quiet evenings spent curled up in a secluded corner of the library

Calliope tries to visit you in the Waking when she can, but Morphues is reluctant to leave his realm (which you completely understand)

There's lots of one-on-one time too, with you and Calliope, you and Morpheus, or Morpheus and Calliope

It helps to strengthen your individual relationships, and make you better partners overall

They find your human quirks and traits extremely endearing, though Calliope has more experience with them than Morpheus

Honestly, having a human partner is the best thing that could have happened to Morpheus and Calliope in regard to their healing

They were both forced to deal with the absolute worst of humanity for a very long time and now, through you, they get to see the weird and wonderful parts of humanity

You're a breath of fresh air, and every time they watch you hold the door open for strangers, or someone randomly compliments your smile, they understand why you still have such hope for your species

It's usually said that to capture the affection/attention of a deity is not something that anybody wants, that it will only bring ruin to the human unlucky enough to be in that position

When it's two of them? Destruction is all but assured

You say bring it on

If you're to meet your end while experiencing the greatest loves you've ever known and ever will, then in your mind, that's a good way to go

Calliope and Morpheus are very much the possessive, passionate creatures that one would think, and they refuse to let any harm come to you

They'll go up against anyone, anything, to keep you safe, be it Hell or the Fates themselves

why hadestown was literally one of the best shows i've ever seen

so i saw hadestown this past saturday for the first time ever and when i tell you i have never been so emotionally wrecked by a broadway show before

so i've compiled a little list of my favorite things from the show!!

act 1:

orpheus doing the stomping cues for the opening with hermes... that's his mom your honor!!!

"his mama was a friend of mine" THAT LINE WHEN LILLIAS WHITE VOICED CALLIOPE IN THE DISNEY HERCULES MOVIE I LOVE LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT LIKE ORPHEUS' MOM REALLY IS ONE OF HER FRIENDS

short king orpheus and tall wife eurydice supremacy

jordan fisher was SUCH a sweet and silly orpheus, like he was fully tripping over himself around eurydice the entire first act

LOVE the chorus so so much

eurydice being so cynical until she sees what orpheus can do and then immediately falling for him

they're the definition of "he fell first, she fell harder"

also during "wedding song", orpheus continues to reach out to eurydice, and then during "all i've ever known", the way she reaches out to him but it's so hesitant and awkward, but orpheus just beams and immediately holds onto her 😭

hades and persephone were playing dominoes up on their little balcony and they actually looked so in love until orpheus started the epic, such good bg character acting

the entirety of "way down hadestown" with eurydice and orpheus being giggly and in love!! they're so so oblivious and focused on each other, just the most innocent love

adding onto the fact that jordan is shorter than both solea and phillip the moment where he jumps between them at the end of the song was so silly

i really love the detail that orpheus stays on stage for "a gathering storm" and the rest of the act, he's so focused on his work and doesn't notice anything

i was worried "wait for me" wouldn't live up to the hype but OH MY GOD OH MY GODDDDDDDD

the little details between hades and persephone, with them shifting from how they were acting in the balcony to persephone barely being able to reach out to hades

act 2:

love that eurydice is naive like orpheus, but in a cynical way

holy SHIT solea my beloved "flowers" was actually godlike

what if i lost my mind at how gentle orpheus was when he found eurydice... what if...

the way eurydice drew back when hades told orpheus that she went with him willingly, like she was ready for him to be angry at her... the way he went right back to her and was checking to make sure she was okay

literally started sobbing during "if it's true", the way orpheus gets angry in a way we haven't seen, and the chorus + eurydice join with him

when the chorus removed their caps and became people again... i was a wreck for the rest of the act ngl

"epic 3" or as i like to call it the "hey look at how hard i can cry" song

orpheus comparing himself to hades, and it being so emotional because we see how innocent and happy he is, how he loves so much, and has so much hope, and seeing how hades had become, and knowing that without eurydice, that's how orpheus becomes, giving up on love and life until he's killed

HADES AND PERSEPHONE DANCING 😭😭 THEY WERE SO PLAYFUL AND HAPPY

jordan and solea were just... the most amazing orpheus and eurydice. they just had such sweet chemistry, and "wait for me" reprise with them reaching for each other UGH

the way you could hear orpheus quietly crying as hermes began to sing the "road to hell" reprise somebody sedate me

IT'S ABOUT SINGING THE SAD SONG AND CONTINUING TO HAVE HOPE THAT IT'LL TURN OUT HAPPY THIS TIME

the only reason i didn't completely decompose is because the knowledge that in the myth, when orpheus dies, hades gives orpheus and eurydice their memories back, and they get to be together, happily, in the underworld.

anyways if i had the money and it was possible i'd fully go see hadestown over and over and over again because it just was so beautiful and impactful plus i'm a sucker for good greek mythology retellings

Sam doesn't know how much longer he can take this. The bathroom door slams and the shower turns on, a few seconds later and he can hear dean singing 'time of the season.' He takes comfort in his brothers singing, his voice soothes him, especially when he has Lucifers cold blue eyes staring at him like that.

"Will you please stop staring at me?" He snarls at Lucifer, but quietly enough so Dean doesn't hear him, though he doubts he will, he's pouring his heart into the chorus right now. Lucifers smile just widens, and if Sam looks for too long he can see bits of flesh stuck in between them, and blood dripping down his chin. He turns his head and shuts his eyes.

"It's not real, it's not real, it's not real-"

"Aw sammy, that hurts my feelings." Theres a very cold hand resting on his shoulder. So cold it burns. Sam tenses up but knows better than to try and pull away. "I could be real, or I could just be your intrusive thoughts." Lucifer bites at Sam's neck before finally moving away, allowing Sam to breathe.

It's always harder when Dean leaves, even if it's just for a few minutes to shower. Lucifer makes it his goal to see how badly he can freak Sam out for Dean to deal with once he gets back.

A few weeks ago when Dean went out to go buy dinner, Lucifer had successfully convinced Sam that his arm had been cut off. Dean had come back to Sam crying on the floor and hugging his arm. Terrible day for everyone.

Now Lucifer seemed to be trying a 'new' tactic. Sam just wished that Dean would hurry up as Lucifer was throwing spoons at him telling him to scoop his eyes out. "Overused." Sam muttered. Lucifer just smiled darkly at him.

Suddenly he heard Dean calling his name, and he sounded scared, worried. Sam snapped his eyes open, which he didn't even know were closed in the first place, and was met with a horrifying sight. Deans face was right up in his, but it was all rotten and his skin was falling off. His lips and cheeks were completely ripped off and there were worms in his mouth. Sam freaked, tried to punch Dean but his big brother caught his fist and immediately started to try and calm him down, dragging his fingers through Sam's hair, digging his thumb into his scar. It worked, because Sam could see deans face again, normally. Cheeks, lips and freckles.

"You good sammy?" Dean asked, and his face was impossibly soft. Sam would roll his eyes at how Dean was babying him, but that's when he realised he wasn't in the motel room anymore, he was in the impala.

"What? Where are we?" He asked, his eyes darting around like a frightened and trapped animal. "When did we get in the car?" He locked eyes with Dean and the look on his brothers face made his heart sink. Dean cupped Sam's cheek. "Sammy, we've been driving for two hours now." There was laughter coming from the back seat. Sam turned around just to see Lucifer sprawled out across the leather seats, laughing. "What's so funny?" He demanded, not caring at all how Dean would react to him talking to air. But Lucifer just kept laughing.

OKAY SO. this is gooliope my beloved etc etc ANYWAYS. for the size comparison photo they have frankie whos the regular 27cm doll and marisol who iirc is the big sister mold thats 29cm but i think she also had larger feet + shoes (also for character reasons since shes daughter of the maricoxi)

the gal in question is a 43cm doll who is 15 feet 2 inches (4.6m) tall in canon according to her diary! her whole thing is that she works in the freak du chic circus, dealing with not knowing who her birth parent is since she's the result of an experiment who was found inside a glass jar with a note from someone named r.s., who she hopes to find someday, but she still sees the circus as her family

NOW FOR THE DESIGN AND MORE LORE YOU DIDNT ASK FOR anyways. since shes like. huge. she doesnt exactly have clothes her size, and in her diary its explained that what she wears is all from the circus. her dress is made from the canvas of the tent, her heels are carrousel horses, her hair comb is a calliope, her earrings are wagon (?) wheels and so on and so forth and i just find it really cool when characters stories affect their appearance, especially in stuff like this where it couldve easily been ignored

actual like. doll-components wise i havent seen enough to know all the differences off the top of my head just yet BUT you can see differences in the way the joints were modeled, and in closeups of her face its a lot more detailed than the smaller dolls!!

i just think shes really cool and i like her a lot <33

I would love to tell you about my OCs I’m like Charlie It’salwayssunny over here I’ve got boxes full of OC stuff I’m just dying to talk about. I’ll put everything under a read more so anyone that’s not interested can just skip past here cause I’m about to get RAMBLY okay let me tell you about my beloveds

Okay so by far my favorite creative project right now is my novel that I’ve been planning on & off since January of 2019, the working title is Villainous, it’s like the most refined and likely to actually go somewhere of all my story ideas and I swear this thing holds my entire soul

The actual story is a play on the classic Career Woman RomCom setup except her name is ~Magnate~ and her big city career that never gives her time for love is ~Supervillain~

unfortunately I don’t have any art of her or any of the other characters yet because good super designs are difficult to nail down, but I’m working on it!

Anyway Magnate is amazing and a bit of an ass and I like her so much <3 She’s a big time supervillain that uses the high tech gadgets she creates for your standard robberies heists kidnapping the mayor the usual. Her parents were shitty white collar criminals that on top of being totally uninvolved in their daughter’s life embezzled from their numerous charity organizations, leading her to be suspicious of anyone that calls themselves a hero + giving her a whopping case of trust issues and a loose grasp on ethics, cuz hey, morality may be a ruse but the power and prestige sure aren’t. She's worked hard and climbed the ladder and made a name for herself as a kickass supervillain, and she plays cool and dramatic but underneath all the bravado she’s just an endearingly awkward nerd who wants a friend, which is where the next character comes in~

So for plot reasons Magnate joins up with another even more infamous supervillain to get a spot as his right hand woman in his plan for world domination, and she’s fine and everything’s business as usual until she’s told that she has to work with another person he’s recruited for her part of the plan to do biochemistry stuff synthesizing the compounds they need while she engineers the tech components, and so enters best boy Dr. Bodhi Bright who crashes into her carefully curated life and ruins everything in the nicest way :)

listen, I LOVE this guy he’s weird he’s a weirdo, just a chill funky lil dude with the most incomprehensible moral compass on Earth. Because of their job he and Magnate have to spend a lot of time together forcing Magnate to actually socialize for once beyond hurling quips at her nemesis, and right of the bat Bodhi completely throws her off her game vis a vis her supervillain image with just his whole deal. He’s this sweet polite guy who’ll talk about a death ray in the same casual tone as the minutiae of city parking, he’s new to the villainy thing and he just thinks Magnate is cool. Bodhi thinks he’s just good at reading people but he actually has minor latent empathic abilities which let him pick up on Magnate’s bravado and so he’s just...not intimidated by her at all. He completely circumvents the whole ‘big evil supervillain’ thing and just talks to her like they’re normal coworkers. And it’s not like they can just find somebody else to replace him so Magnate’s forced to respond and build an actual relationship and rapport with someone for the first time in ever. So they get closer and become actual friends, Bodhi starts calling her ‘Meg’ because Magnate kind of sounds like Margaret, and she lets him. Meg shows him the ropes of villainy, and just sort of learns to be a person again through working & developing this friendship with him, remembering what it’s like to be genuinely happy and excited about her everyday life and care about more than just her job, to open herself up to care about other people at all, and this is a romantic comedy so of course as the story progresses they fall in love and just—GAH I love their relationship so much they're so good for each other I could talk about them forever and I’m literally writing a book about it so like yeah they’re great. my darlings <3.

Here I’ve got some memes to give a better impression of their dynamic

I've only really got one other important character left to talk about aside from Meg & Bodhi's boss (he's literally the worst & the major antagonist for the book that's all that needs going into for now otherwise this thing is just going to reach unwieldingly more rambly and specific heights) and she's the secondary antagonist, superhero extraordinaire and Meg's nemesis AmaZing (get it? like amazing? except it sounds like amazon? cuz she's a lady superhero—) in a shocking turn of events this woman is the best person out of any of the people here and also the most well adjusted, she is also a very interesting character to me and I could probably pull a whole other book out of her character if I wanted to. AmaZing’s real name is Zoe Amison, before she was a hero she was a professional ballerina with a kickboxing hobby that she used to keep in shape, her first night out I think she was just straight up dressed in her costume for Firebird or something. She has superhuman strength and agility, her powers manifest with these bursts of golden sparks and arcs of electricity which she can direct as a close range weapon, basically she’s very good at the big punchy aesthetics. She’s known as one of the best superheroes in terms of like who they are as people, she tries to help rehabilitate the supervillains she fights, including Magnate, even though most of them have none of it, any money she gets from her hero work she donates back to the community so she can contribute more than just punching muggers, and she does a lot of activism and charity events on the side. She makes most of the money she needs to eat and whatnot in the cornerstore she inherited that her family’s owned for generations, and she lives in the apartment above the store with her girlfriend because YES she’s a lesbian YES her girlfriend is trans YES they are disgustingly in love and YES they own a cat named Petal together. (Her girlfriend’s name is Callie (short for Calliope) she’s a nurse and patches Zoe up when she gets hurt on the job)

And there is so much more I could say about this thing but that’s about all I can muster right now in terms of like a basic overview of these characters. Thank you so much for this ask dude this was so fun to do!!

Foolish Jr. is called FJ by almost everybody, to the point where some of the younger kids don’t even know his actual name.

I know that in the actual game baby zombified piglins don’t ever grow up but I NEED BIG BROTHER MICHAEL OKAY. I need it. He has a baby sister who is an enderman hybrid (for the sake of ensuring Ranbob’s existence) and her name is Rosalyn and he will kill for her. That’s a threat and a promise.

Techno finds two kids wandering around in the snow and is like “ah, it’s time to continue the family tradition I guess” and just immediately Assigns himself the role of Father. (The 8 and 10 year olds who just got surprise adopted by a massive pig man are... suspicious, but grateful.)

Since sexual dimorphism doesn’t exist in Minecraft I’m making the executive decision that if a species CAN have horns or antlers, it always does. One of Techno’s daughters is a deer hybrid named Calliope, and the other is a human named Astraea.

Dream and George have a son and because they’re obnoxious his name is Savior. Everyone calls him Sav. His life is a seeping pit of embarrassment. He has three eyes.

Grandpa!Bad is constantly spoiling the crap out of the Karlnapity kids, both the twins (biologically at least Sapnap’s cause FIRE MAGIC POG) and the random American Goldfinch bird hybrid Quackity found on the side of the road and brought home.

The twins are identical, Reese (they/them) and Helios (he/him) and they’re both little shits. They’re baby sister Skye is the leader and they’re her goons, basically.

Fundy left for several years and came back with two (presumably biological, considering they’re both fox hybrids) children, Finn and Amber, He has not and continues to not explain where they came from, or why his son seems to have freaky magic powers (is it from Wilbur’s side of the family??? Is it from their other parent??? Who knows!)

Tommy, much like techno, found a lost, presumably orphaned child, and got Very attached Very quickly. In his case it’s... a moth hybrid. Named Clem. Cause I’m unoriginal and had the oc idea already. Promethea moth, to be exact. Clem’s just kind of a feral bastard.
