PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD by @apfau - Despite popular belief, you don’t make progress by constantly changing your routine and exercises to “shock” the muscle. Instead, you make progress by performing effective exercises and getting better at them over time. This is referred to as progressive overload. - The most common form of progressive overload is increasing the weight or increasing the reps you can do with the same weight. For example, if you benched 150 pounds for 5 reps this week, the following week you could attempt 155 pounds for 5 reps. Alternatively, if you benched 150 pounds for 5 reps this week, the following week you could do 150 pounds for 6 reps. - ⁣⁣An often overlooked form of progressive overload is improved form. Obviously, you should always be trying to lift with proper form but no matter how long you’ve been lifting, there is always room for improvement. Subtle tweaks can make the exercise more effective even if you’re doing the same sets/reps as before.⁣⁣⁣ - Another overlooked form of progressive overload is decreasing rest time between sets. If you are able to lift the same weight for the same amount of reps as before but resting less time between sets, you have improved. I like to use this technique for isolation exercises such as lateral raises and arm exercises. You’re not going to be able to increase the weight or reps on those exercises indefinitely at a certain point so decreasing rest times is a more realistic way of increasing the difficulty. - Additionally, you can increase your training frequency (training a muscle 3x/week instead of 2) and/or increasing your training volume (more sets). CARDIO by @apfau - Let's talk about everyone’s favorite thing to do...cardio 😂😂. I often get asked which is better between low intensity steady state cardio (LISS) and high intensity interval training (HIIT). - My short answer is that neither is better than the other and believe it or not, you can actually incorporate both 😱😱. - LISS is useful because it's simple, not very difficult, and can be done anywhere. Even if you're tired and even if you don't have access to a gym, you can do it. You can just go for a walk outside or around the mall if you want. - HIIT is useful because you can get it over with faster since you burn a lot of calories in very little time. However, it is taxing and can impair recovery from your workouts if you do it too often or too close to a leg workout. - The one that is never talked about is moderate intensity which is actually my personal favorite since it combines the benefits of LISS and HIIT. - Overall, no one really likes cardio but we do it because it's healthy and it's a way to burn calories. EGG WHITES by @apfau - If you enjoy my content, make sure to follow me, @apfau for daily fitness content 😁. - Eggs are one of my favorite protein sources (and favorite foods to scream at). However, whole eggs are pretty high in calories whereas egg whites are one of the lowest calorie and purest protein foods you can eat. Of course, egg whites don't taste as good either. A trick that I like to use is to include one or two whole eggs and then use mostly egg whites. Overall, you get about 80% of the taste and feel of whole eggs yet save a bunch of calories. There is nothing wrong with only eating whole eggs in my opinion. This is purely a way to save some calories. The yolk contains about half the protein of the entire egg but it also contains the fat and that’s why egg whites are so much lower in calories. Swipe left to see a pretty cool post by @roballenfitness showing what’s in an egg. - A common concern is that eating eggs increases your cholesterol which then increases your risk for heart disease. However, there is plenty of evidence that eating dietary cholesterol has a very minimal impact on your cholesterol levels. Further, consuming cholesterol is not even associated with an increased risk of heart disease [1, 2]. I recommend doing some research on your own if you’re skeptical. If you want to use me as just one example, I’ve eaten whole eggs almost everyday for years and I have low cholesterol levels. If you’re afraid to eat eggs, then you don’t have to eat them.
