Agh, sorry this is so late! I was planning on posting at least two more stories for #jttwfestival2020, so naturally my computer decided to break down the last few weeks of December. ;;
So, here is my exceedingly late contribution for Day #6: Make Your Own Bizarre AU! I will be cross-posting this on my AO3 profile, RavenMoon33, so feel free to check it out there as well.
This is a superhero AU (because I’m just a sucker for those tbh), so for some basic information:
Guanyin is a director/supervisor (think Nick Fury but better) working for the Lotus Syndicate (superhero agency) who goes under the codename Bodhisattva, Sanzang is one of her tech guys (think Q) whose codename is Monk, while the rest of the pilgrims are miscellaneous superheroes put together to be one of the Lotus Syndicates best superhero teams.
I’m already building up a bigger story and world for this (because I can’t seem to help myself apparently) and I do plan on continuing it with at least a few more parts/chapters. I’m not sure yet if I’ll be posting subsequent parts on Tumblr or if I’ll just keep them all on AO3 in a single story/series (purely out of laziness lmao) so keep an eye out for updates there if you like it.
Alright, ramble over. Please enjoy and let me know what you guys think!
“Monk, thank you for coming on such short notice. Please, take a seat.” Sanzang took a deep breath to hide his nerves and did as Guanyin bid him, sinking into the comfortable cushioned chair opposite her desk as well as he could with prickles of anxiety keeping his body tense and alert. He kept his briefcase clutched tightly to his chest as if it could be a barrier between them.
“There’s no need to be so anxious,” she laughed, “I promise I didn’t call you here for anything bad.” He gave a pointed look to the tea set and trays of cookies and sweets positioned strategically on the desk, an obvious bribe if ever he saw one.
“Bodhisattva, the last time you called me in here like this you assigned me to the Five Finger Mountain case.”
“Which turned out well, didn’t it?” She replied, sipping serenely at her tea. He blinked at her, flabbergasted, for a moment.
“I nearly died at least three times, nearly got fired, and spent a full month surviving in the woods on my own!” He stood up angrily when she just continued to stir her tea, pointing an accusing finger at her. “I’m just a tech guy, I wasn’t even supposed to be out on the field! What part of that is good?”
“The part where you rooted out dozens of spies in our network, exposed one of our highest-ranking members for corruption, and got half a dozen of our operatives out of enemy territory after they’d been held prisoner for years, all from your computer in the middle of a run-down shack in the woods?”
He opened his mouth to protest, he had just been doing his job after all, but she cut him off before he could even start.
“Or perhaps before that, when you helped save countless civilian lives by actively going out to the mountain site yourself and manually disabling the satellite gun before it could wipe out a quarter of the population, because no one else would listen to you and I was busy being framed for everything going wrong?” He sheepishly sunk down into his seat at her firm look, fighting the urge to hide his very red face in his hands.
He couldn’t exactly brush the whole thing off as nothing with her sitting right there in front of him, knowing more about what exactly those two months had been like for him than anyone else did. She didn’t seem angry at least, the same as she had when he refused a promotion and the rewarded recognition the higher-ups offered him after it was all said and done.
(He didn’t want the glory of being the person who wasn’t fast enough, smart enough, good enough to save the seventeen people who died between the time he figured out what was really going on and the time he finally gave up on The Lotus Syndicate getting anything done and going rogue. Three days, seventeen people- he should’ve been better. He didn’t want the operatives who made it out of there trying to thank him when they’d been stuck in a dark basement for months, some years, while he’d been off doing who knows what. He should’ve been better. He didn’t want the glory).
But she at least understood, later, when he explained it to her, so she wasn’t angry anymore. He still couldn’t bear to meet her eyes though. Eventually, she took pity on him, handing him a steaming cup of tea. An olive branch.
A few moments of silence passed.
“I was just doing my job.” He muttered at last, sullenly stirring sugar into his tea, accepting the silent apology for what it was. Neither of them liked to think too deeply about that time. She smiled gently at him, the warmth of it easing the tension out of his muscles. The tense air around them cleared.
“And you performed admirably. You are one of the best tech operatives in the business after all, if not the best.” He shook his head slightly, but didn’t try to protest. Questionable heroics aside, he was good at what he did, and they both knew it. “Which is why I’ve called you in here today. I have a new assignment for you.”
He perked up when she placed a folder on the desk between them, eager to leave the shadowy confines of the past behind. Besides, he’d been stuck on filing duty for the past month thanks to Guanyin’s momentary absence and his temporary supervisor hating his guts for whatever reason, and he was bored.
“What is it?” He asked, even as he reached forward and plucked the folder off the desk.
“Have you heard of the Nomads?” He snorted and gave her a disbelieving look.
“No,” he drawled sarcastically, “I can’t say I’ve heard of our most powerful superhero team, the ones who have racked up almost half a trillion dollars in damages in the last year alone and who have single handedly caused the PR department to go on strike no less than three times in the last two years.” Her mouth twisted into a wry yet fond smile.
“They are a handful, but their results more than make up for their more… unique methods.”
“Reckless methods, more like it.” He muttered, starting to flip through the file when she only nodded serenely at him. “What about them?”
“I want you to be their new tech.” He nearly choked on his tea.
“You want me to what?!”
“Be their new tech.” She repeated firmly, setting down her teacup and fixing him with the no-nonsense look he knew better than to ignore. “They’ve become one of our most powerful assets in only two years, but any team without a good tech is basically flying blind. They’ve been doing good out on the field, but they’re not as new as they used to be. The enemy will start to figure out their weaknesses soon, and without a good operative they can trust to lead them well when they’re in dangerous situations, they have a pretty glaring one.”
“You’re not telling me they’ve been operating for two years without a tech?!” He asked incredulously.
“Of course not! I make sure they have a tech for every mission, but,” here she sighed and rubbed at her temple, and she must’ve been exceedingly stressed out if she was actually showing physical signs of it, “they’ve also managed to drive away every tech I’ve assigned to them within a month or flat out refuse to work with the ones who don’t run. They need a good operative, someone competent who won’t run away when the going gets tough, until I can find a more permanent replacement. The pickings are slim, and I want to avoid having to start poaching techs from other departments if I can help it.”
She looked at him then, her eyes beseeching him in the way they only did when she was asking for a favor as a friend, and not as his boss.
“You’re the best pick for the job, because you know what you’re doing and I know I can count on you to do it well.” He could feel himself wavering now, and he could tell she knew it too. “Please Sanzang, you’re the only person I can trust with this right now.” He sighed and slumped back in his chair, defeated.
“How long do you want me on this then?”
“Seventeen months.”
“Seventeen-?!”
“Just until my assistant, Novice, gets back from his mission with the Jade Apprentices,” she interrupted, a hand raised in a plea for civility, “then you can have any position or assignment you want as thanks for taking this one on.”
He paused, considering.
“Even at Thunderclap? You know I don’t like working on the field.” And a position at Thunderclap would practically guarantee he’d never have to go on the field again.
“Yes,” she nodded after a significant pause, though she didn’t seem particularly happy about it, “even at Thunderclap. You’ve more than earned it, if that’s what you truly want.” He sighed in relief and nodded.
“Alright then. Seventeen months.”
“Seventeen months.” She agreed. “You can have the rest of today off, but you’ll be flying out to their main base in Beijing tomorrow morning. I’ll send you the relevant details tonight, but until then try to get some rest. You’ll need it.”
-
Sanzang did not rest. Once he got home (or rather, the hotel room he’d been living out of for the past few weeks- staying in the same place for too long made him nervous nowadays) he hunkered down in front of his computer monitors and spent the night doing research on the group he’d be spending the next year and a half babysitting.
The Nomads were made up of four members, each more powerful and dangerous than the next.
Freefall, Red Sand, Nine-Toothed Boar, and last but certainly not least, their leader Great Sage.
With the notable exception of Great Sage, each member of the group had been employed by the Lotus Syndicate for at least a few years before falling out of grace in one way or another, whether through an excessive amount of public damage getting them demoted to less than stellar positions in the Syndicate (Freefall and Red Sand) or the sheer amount of HR complaints getting them flat-out fired (Nine-Toothed Boar).
The three of them were only reinstated as high-ranking superheroes after the Five Finger Mountain incident revealed a distressing amount of Lotus’ heroes to be corrupt, severely depleting the Syndicate’s fighting force and requiring many previously fired or demoted heroes to be reinstated (even if only temporarily).
The three were put on a team with one of the Syndicate’s newest and most powerful superheroes (Great Sage, who as far as Sanzang could tell seemed to have popped up out of nowhere) both as a PR stunt (public damage and HR complaints or not, the three were still public favorites and no one was more popular in the public eye than the Great Sage himself) and as a way to keep a close eye on all of them, just in case.
Regardless of their rocky relationship with the Lotus Syndicate however, no one could deny they did amazing work.
It seemed every week there was a new story popping up in headlines about their latest accomplishment in making the world a safer place; stopping bank robberies, rescuing hostages, uncovering shady gang operations, saving the entire world from some type of otherworldly threat, fetching cats stuck in trees- you name it, they’ve done it at least twice in the past six months alone.
Sanzang couldn’t deny they did a lot of good, helped a lot of people, but even just looking at the reports on the damages left over from their altercations with criminals made a headache start throbbing behind his eyes. And he wasn’t even technically responsible for them yet!
He sighed and started compiling folders on all four of them; their powers, their personalities, their greatest successes, their worst failures, every scrap of a clue to each one’s backstory.
Forewarned is forearmed after all, and dammit, Sanzang was nothing if not prepared.
(Sanzang would soon come to learn that when it came to dealing with the Nomads, there was, in fact, no way to be prepared.)

Early on, Severus learned that life wasn’t fair.
He knew that he either had to accept it or drown in things he couldn’t control. Life was hard and unforgiving, but he was a stubborn kid. He refused to accept his circumstances at home and refused to back down at Hogwarts.
Nothing was handed to him in life. Severus had to work for everything, which was fine by him. No one could ever say he wasn’t deserving of anything he earned.
He arrived in Norway with not enough money for food and board. Slept under a bridge until he got his first paycheck, and then rented the poorest, dingiest accommodations he could find with his first paycheck.
He grew up in poverty. What he lived in now was better than where he came from.
But it wasn’t easy.
Living on the streets and looking for a job.
Without an address, many didn’t want to employ him. However, he was determined. He didn’t leave his home and Hogwarts behind to die on the streets in a foreign land.
Severus applied for every apprentice position he could find. Every single one turned him down. Refusing for that to dissuade him working, he offered to do maintenance work. Clean the shop, put away items, and whatever miscellaneous work needed to be done.
He was hired on the spot.
Admittedly, Severus was severely underpaid, but it didn’t deter him. This was only temporary. He’d find something better.
Within a few months, something better found him.
He’d heard a group students arguing about the ingredients of a potions brew. One of the students lack confidence in their answer and the other had 100% belief that they were right. The group went with the confident person, which infuriated Severus.
“Idiots,” he spat. “If you’re the best Durmstrang has to offer, no wonder many parents are sending their kids to Hogwarts. Don’t worry about failing potions, you’ll be dead before the professor can even assess it. He may be a spineless fool,” Severus nodded to the kid who initially disagreed with the overly confident teen. “But at least his brew won’t kill the lot of you...unfortunately.”
Storming out of the deli, Snape prepared for a duel as he discreetly got his wind. Sourly, he chastised himself. This was the first day in weeks he treated himself out to eat because he had to penny-pinch to make ends meet. If the original brew wouldn’t have resulted in death, he would’ve kept his mouth closed. Now he had to fight a group of boys, which gave him a flashback of his time at Hogwarts.
As predicted, the boys attempted to attack him. As Severus prepared to defend himself, someone intervened.
“Hey, what’s going on here?” The man looked at the six of them.
“Nothing,” the man repeated. “Well, the six of you will be doing nothing or SOMETHING in detention with me for the next month.”
Severus pocketed his wand. “I don’t go to Durmstrang,” he said. “I won’t be doing shit with you.”
Assessing him, the man raised an eyebrow, and then glanced at the guy he’d been walking with. “You’re not a student and you’re not a local, there’s no accent. What are you doing here?”
Inwardly, Severus sighed.
When the school term started, he realized he was in the vicinity of where durmstrang was located. Although he didn’t know where the school was nor did he attempt to look, it was quite obvious. The shops that primarily existed for students, the crowding every weekend, the adults who appeared to be monitoring kids.
Naturally, since no one knew where Durmstrang was if they weren’t a student, teacher, or anyone directly affiliated with the school, those who were were suspicious.
“Looking for an apprentice position. I didn’t finish my seventh year, so no Master was interested in taking me on,” he groused.
“Ha,” one boy exclaimed. “You couldn’t even pass your seventh year and you’re calling us idiots?”
Fuming, Severus said, “I did not fail my seventh year, I left. Besides, there was nothing left to teach me that I hadn’t already taught myself. Your potion brew solution is pathetic and if you want to die as a result of incompetence, perhaps they’ll include you in lesson books as to what not to do.”
The other man spoke, “How was their brew pathetic?”
Severus noted the time. “Ask them yourself, they’d love to dazzle you with their stupidity.”
The man scoffed. “Just like I suspected. A bloke full of himself who has nothing to show for it. No wonder none of the masters wanted you as their apprentice.”
Scathingly, Severus explained how and why the potion brew was incompetence at its finest. That him brewing with dirty utensils would be a safer option than whatever this group of boys could do in perfect conditions. Severus cited his Hogwarts issued potions book, which he pointed out was outdated, and said that he’d trusted that over what he heard the boys discuss (and he’d stopped using the books as a source to brew from after his fourth year).
Smiling, the man said, “My name is Rodolphous Sweeney. I own the potions shop two blocks over. I’d like to talk to you more about your potions knowledge.”
“I need to get back to work.” Severus began to walk off.
“How about this?” The man spoke loudly. “If you come back to the shop with me and make three potions without any assistance or mistakes, you can be my apprentice. If you’re successful, you can start today.”
Severus stopped. “Why would you do that?”
“Because you’re right,” he said. “Their potions brew was pathetic. And a wizard that can thoroughly discuss the finer points of potion making based off of a passing discussion is someone I want as an apprentice.”
Severus followed him to the shop.
“What’s your name, boy?”
“Severus Snape.”
Without breaking a sweat, Severus completed each potion with time to spare. In amazement, Rodolphous assessed each potion.
“They’re...perfect,” he complimented. “You’ve completed these in less time than any published books states.”
“I told you, the books are outdated,” Snape said.
“Or they haven’t been updated because there wasn’t anyone brilliant enough to modify any of these instructions to merit an update.”
Blankly, Severus stared at him. “It was obvious.”
“No. It wasn’t.” Rodolphous put the potion down. “What’s obvious to you isn’t apparent to most. You have a brilliant mind, Severus. With that being said, you do have a lot to learn. School only sets the foundation of what it takes to fine tune our knowledge and skill.”
Severus’ black eyes followed Rodolphous as he walked.
“We can learn from each other,” he continued.
As promised, Severus was immediately hired. Rodolphous explained the ins and outs of his business and what he expected from him. It all sounded reasonable to Severus as he shook hands with the potions Master.
In no time, he was Rodolphous’ top apprentice. Frequently collaborating on projects with him and trying experiments.
Severus lived in his dingy quarters for a year until moving into a modest apartment. Bought actual food, still cheap, books, and saved the rest. Unlike with his former employer, he was being underpaid. His time and skill was valued as he learned more about potions and how other disciples connected to it.
He felt like he belonged...somewhat.
When his mother became sick, Rodolphous gave him time to tend to her and promised he’d have a job to come back to when he took care of his personal business.
As he took care of his mother, his father was died. Tobias Snape was violently mugged and choked on his own vomit in an alleyway. His mother died little under three months later.
Complicated feelings swirled within Snape. His tormentor was finally dead. Although his father never put his hands on him, Severus still carried emotional scars. The baggage that continued to weigh him down even though his father was dead.
A weight was not lifted. He didn’t feel better or free.
He just was.
His mother was different and more complicated. He loved and resented her in equal measures. She could’ve left. Why didn’t she leave?
Why didn’t she get them out of there?
He held her hand as she laid dying in her bed. He hurt and wanted to forgive her. His anger pent up ready to boil over.
His heart breaking as her heart failed her.
What was the use in being angry?
At her at least?
Instead, they reminisced over the few happy memories they had. Severus got read his mother books and watched her favorite shows with her.
She died before the episode was over.
Another funeral in less than three months.
Severus was emotionally exhausted in a way he couldn’t deal with. In a way he didn’t want to deal with.
As he did years before, severus kept very little personal items. He sold what he could and threw away the rest. With the money he made from his sells, Severus fixed up the house and contacted a realtor about selling.
Keeping this house meant holding on to memories. Unpleasant memories.
Months later, he came back to Spinner’s end to finalize the deal.
He ran into Lily Evans—Lily Potter.
“Hi, excuse me,” she said.
For a moment, Severus was taken aback. Still beautiful. She always had kind eyes.
Ever since he left hogwarts, whenever he was at Spinner’s end, he used poly juice potion of Rodolphous. He didn’t want to risk anyone (Lily, really) recognizing him.
“Yes,” Severus said.
“Are you the new homeowner?” Severus looked at the sold sticker slapped on the for sale sign.
“No. Afraid not,” Severus said, carefully.
“Do you know what happened to the Snape family,” Lily asked. “I haven’t been around these last few years. I went away and...” she shook her head. “So, I haven’t been up on what’s been happening.”
Severus saw the wedding band on her hand. She couldn’t have married Potter, could she? And so soon?
“Unfortunately,” Severus began. “Tobias and Eileen Snape have passed away.”
Lily clutched her chest. “Oh my God, really?” Severus nodded. “Poor Severus. How is their son holding up?”
“No one has heard from him,” he said. “Apparently he disappeared a few years ago. Without a living family member to claim the house and no one paying the mortgage, the bank seized and sold the house.”
“That’s horrible,” she murmured to herself, tears welling in her ears. Lily wrapped her arms tightly around herself. “Their son and I used to be friends. We ended on a bad note before he disappeared out seventh year. I sometimes wonder where he is. If he’s safe. If he has anyone.”
“Maybe he doesn’t want anyone to wonder after him,” Severus said.
Lily furrowed her brows. “Everyone wants someone to wonder after them. Everyone. I knew Severus was having a hard time at school, but —“
“Lily, my dear, we have to go,” James said as he walked up to them with a baby boy in his arms. “You said it’ll only take a moment.”
Lily wiped her eyes. “Severus’ parents are dead and no one still has heard anything from him.”
Shocked, James looked at lily. “Snape’s a smart guy, he probably—“
“I have to go,” Severus said, walking away before they could speak.
When he returned back to Norway, Severus was quite and kept to himself when work was over. Seeing lily again was a surprise, but he still was grappling with the death of his parents. Why didn’t he feel any different? Well, better? His violent father was dead. Instead, he felt worse and aimless.
As Severus inhaled his cigarette, his co-apprentice Chorus joined him in the alley. Stealing the cigarette from his mouth, she inhaled.
“I was smoking that,” he grumbled.
“I know,” she said. Once again, she puffed, and then handed him the cigarette. “We’re having drinks tonight, join us.”
“I’m not in the mood.”
“I wasn’t asking.” A smile played on her lips. Chorus looked at Severus sympathetically. “I know you’re having a tough time. I get it.” Chorus was very open about the unexpected and tragic loss of her parents. “But you won’t feel better isolating yourself from everyone. Have one drink. If you aren’t having fun by the time you finish it, you can go home. My orders.”
If Severus could smile, he would.
Three beers in, he managed to laugh. Privately, each apprentice spoke to him and expressed remorse for his loss. They appeared to be genuine and offered to help if he needed anything.
Throughout his entire ordeal, they consistently reached out to him while he took care of his mother. Looked in on his apartment. Didn’t touch his station.
Didn’t laugh at him.
Calling it at night, Severus said, “I’m heading out.”
“Can you walk me home?” Chorus walked beside him.
“Uh...sure.”
They chatted on their way to his apartment. Chorus wasn’t just easy to talk to, she had an interesting mind.
“For a world filled with possibilities, wizarding society has such a limited viewpoint,” she said. “Dark magic. It’s a fascinating field of study, but people think that just because you find it appealing it means you’re evil. Or the bullshit categorization what is it isn’t evil.”
Severus arched an brow. “Such as?”
“I understand that there’s levels to this shit,” she began. “However, shouldn’t there be more strict guidelines other than ‘you have to mean it?’ That’s a pretty low bar. Why can’t there be ‘grey magic?’ On a purely academic level, dark magic is interesting as hell. It’s a rich subject because of how intense, unpredictable, and powerful dark magic can be. Who wouldn’t want to study that?”
They moved on to lighter topics.
When they arrived to the front of Chorus’ apartment building, she said, “You should come up.”
Baffled, Severus said, “why?”
Laughing out loud, chorus covered her mouth. “I told them you were bad at this.”
Humiliated, Severus began to walk away when chorus grab his jacket and brought her mouth to his.
She waggled her eyebrows. “You should come up,” she repeated.
“I, um—I,” he stammered.
Chorus kissed his again. “It’s okay,” she promised. “Just follow my lead.”
Slowly, she led Severus upstairs and into her bedroom.
Chorus took her time and was patient with Severus to which he was appreciative of.

Let’s Give them Something to Talk About, Chapter 5
Rating: Explicit Word count: 6,138 Ship: RK1000 (Connor/Markus) Chapter: 5/5
Summary: The Jericho team plus Connor need to think up a way to distract the public from the fact that North punched a very important human. What better way than the Deviant Leader dating the Deviant Hunter?
Thank you to @gavincantreedthis for beta reading this!
---------------------
Connor went back to work and a few officers came up to ask about Markus. It's oddly easy to be super vague and avoid the question, so that's what he did.
Gavin gave him a pat on the back, and a whispered good luck. Connor had gently slapped the back of his head which turned into a playful fight. At this point, everyone was used to this so they just went about their day while going around them.
Connor let Gavin win who gave a shout and ordered Connor to get him coffee for his win, even though he already had one. Connor rolled his eyes, but did it anyway, adding a bit more sugar in than he knew Gavin liked.
The day went smoothly, well as smoothly as a day can go as a detective, but Connor still couldn't stop thinking about Markus.
He thought about how he had traced each scar with his fingers, how the paintbrush glided over his darker skin. He thought about when Markus sat up and placed his hands on Connor's thighs. He imagined himself closing that distance and completely ruining his own painting.
He thought of each of their kisses and how it shocked him each time. How he always craved for more, but never pushed past that wall that told him it was all fake. How stupid he had been to not realize what Markus was implying when he wanted to go somewhere private.
He thought about Markus's arms around him on his bike, how he kept close to him even when no one was looking. It was all so obvious and yet Connor had mistaken it for being a lie.
Maybe at first, it had been. Maybe Markus hadn't realized his own feelings, but now he knew. Why hadn't he told Connor? Wouldn't fake dating him be agonizing? It just didn't make sense.
They couldn't stop, though, and Connor couldn't risk making it more awkward for either of them. So he'd keep his knowledge of Markus's feelings a secret from everyone. Well, everyone except Gavin, that was.
He thought that his mind would calm after that day, but each day was something new he remembered. A small little detail he fixated on until it drove his crazy.
He had to keep himself from daydreaming too much. If he let that go on then he'd no doubt fall farther into the whole that he wouldn't be able to climb back out of. He had to keep to his objective and not be swayed.
It was even harder when Markus would message him and he couldn't stop himself from blushing. It just made him think about the club, Markus's hands on him. Markus's mouth on his neck- hands up his shirt. The feeling of Markus pushing him up against the wall, on clear display for literally everyone to see.
He had to rush to the bathroom to take a few seconds to breathe. No, he couldn't keep this up. Maybe he could block some of his memories out, yet the idea made him instantly shrink up. He didn't want to, but this was getting out of control.
»From Connor
I need help.
»From Gavin
whats up?
»From Connor
I can't stop thinking of Markus in… certain situations. What can I do to relieve this?
»From Gavin
well, you got your answer right there. jerk off
»From Connor
Gavin! I'm being serious! I don't want to block off any memories, but they keep popping up.
»From Gavin
i am too! jerk off to the guy once or twice, itll hold you off til you grow a pair and saying something to him
Connor huffed and glared at the message. He wasn't ever planning on letting this temporary infatuation come to light or even be pursued. Markus never had to know.
»From Connor
Gavin, I can't. That's inappropriate, and I don't even know how.
»From Gavin
well shit. uh, you got the parts for it right?
»From Connor
I do. I've just never done it before. I don't know what will and won't work or what to expect.
Plus, he was currently hiding in a bathroom stall. He wasn't going to just do it right there, that was completely unsanitary and unprofessional.
»From Gavin
fucking hell. you just do it. youll figure out what feels good, watch some porn or something. you could even ask markus for advice if you really need help
»From Connor
No! No, I can't ask him! Thank you for the advice, though, I will take it into consideration.
»From Gavin
you do that robocop
Connor rolled his eyes and leaned back against the stall closing his eyes. That was a bad idea because the memory of Markus pressing against him came rushing back.
This had to stop and it had to stop now. As long as no one came in, it would be fine. He'd do this, then get back to work with a clear head.
He slowly pulled his pants down, folded them, and set them on top of the toilet, making sure they wouldn't fall in. Then he did the same with his underwear.
He reached down and gently wrapped his hands around himself, giving a gentle tug. He gasped and put his free hand out to steady himself on the wall. It was more stimulation than he expected. It wasn't like he had to touch himself there at all, after all, he didn't, well, use it.
He stroked up slowly, his fingers curled tightly, his breath catching as his thumb flicked over the head. He tried not to think of Markus, but that was a complete failure.
His hand was a bit awkward at first, but then he imagined Markus's hand over his, guiding him. Each stroke became more and more confident until he was gasping and biting his lip.
It was too much, yet not enough. There was something he was reaching but he just couldn't get over the edge.
He couldn't stop the idea of Markus murmuring praise in his ear like before, calling him a good boy again. It was terrible and he felt so dirty for thinking it, but that's what sent him over the edge.
He had to stop himself from making too much sound as he came, his legs weak and shaky. It's one of the most intense experiences he's had, but also incredibly pleasurable. Hopefully, he'd be able to focus now.
He used some toilet paper to fully clean up before pulling his clothes back on and walking out. He washes his hands for an extra measure and straightened out his shirt in the mirror.
He still felt like everyone would be able to tell what he just did, but there was no physical evidence. He made sure of that at least.
He walked back out and Gavin gave him this smirk that Connor almost wanted to punch off him. He knew he wasn't being mean, more teasing than anything else.
Connor squinted at him before walking by and flipping him off. Gavin snorted and rolled his eyes. Friendship could be so odd.
He sat back down at his desk and avoided looking at Hank. He didn't want to explain why he ran off, or why he had taken so long in the bathroom when he couldn't even fully use it. Humans definitely had the advantage of excuses there.
He kept his head down as he worked, and thankfully the images of Markus were reduced to only coming up when someone mentioned him. That was far better than he expected.
He was able to get through a few days before the thoughts became too much again. He was lucky that he wasn't at work the next time he decided to 'jerk off' as Gavin put it.
He still hated himself for imagining Markus there with him. He felt like a bad friend for doing it, but it would probably be even worse if he asked for permission. He wanted to stop, yet his mind wouldn't let him.
So he made sure to keep his distance from Markus. Of course he replied to him, but he always had a reason to turn him down to meet up.
He just wouldn't be able to look at Markus without feeling guilty. Yet he also felt guilty for turning him down. Plus, he was really busy so it wasn't like it was too big of a stretch.
For some reason, there had been quite a few murders recently. Not anything too crazy, but it did keep him and Hank on their toes.
Josh had messaged him with updates on the situation. Apparently, Markus would need to propose soon and had agreed to do it on live tv. Well, that would certainly bring a huge reaction. From what Josh had said the whole thing with North was basically forgotten. It was amazing how easily distracted humans could be.
He pushed through the days and pointedly ignored any and all feelings that went past platonic for Markus. For some reason, it just made those feelings worse.
He wanted to be around Markus, wanted to hold his hand, and have him smile at him. He wanted Markus's eyes on him and only him even in a crowded room.
He wanted to paint with Markus again, sit on his lap, and laugh. Watch Markus's eyes close as his hand sifted across the canvas. He wanted to watch Markus move so gracefully almost like a dance.
He just wanted to be near him so badly that his heart ached. He hated the feeling but loved it at the same time. He wanted to get rid of it but he didn't know what would fill that spot if it was gone.
When Josh sent that it was finally the day he was drowning in emotions he didn't understand. This would hopefully be over soon and these feelings would go away and he'd never have to worry about them again.
Connor went through his wardrobe trying to pick the perfect outfit. Nothing felt right so he decided to go back to what he used to wear. Well, it wasn't exactly the same, but it was close enough.
He felt comfortable and safe in it, plus he'd make that much more of an impression. The jacket was the same except it was missing the Cyberlife symbols. It still had RK800 on it along with his serial code but that was it. It was still very recognizable.
Trying to push his hair back like he normally did, that one piece of hair fell into his face like always. He huffed and didn't even try to fix it.
He didn't have enough time to go to Jericho first, but that was fine, he'd see Markus there.
Hank patted him on the shoulder and said good luck. At least Hank was still supportive of this, even though he could tell something was up.
Connor was more nervous about this than any other mission with Markus. It wasn't like he could mess this up, but it still put him on edge. He just had to say yes, simple as that.
Yet he felt almost nauseous the whole way and even when they put on some makeup for the camera.
He didn't even get to Markus until the two were standing together and waiting for Markus's cue to walk on. He was to go first and then Connor would come out after the hostess asked about him.
The two stood side by side and watched the screen as the other celebrity guest answered questions.
"Are you ready?" Markus whispered, glancing at Connor then back at the screen.
"I am prepared, you?" They had to keep their voices down so the mics wouldn't pick them up, but that was fine. They could hear each other perfectly.
Markus nodded and pulled out a small box from his pocket. "I am. Carl gave this to me, hopefully, you like it. Do you want to see it now or it be a surprise?"
Connor's eyes widened at that. That ring must hold a lot of meaning, and yet Markus was willing to use it for this. "Markus… are you sure? Obviously, I won't keep it, but that seems a little too much."
"It's fine if anyone is going to wear it, I'm glad it's you. So, do you want to see?" Markus said, holding it out.
Connor slowly reached out and opened it. Inside was the most beautiful ring he had ever seen. It was a weathered whiskey barrel wood ring with elk antler and double gold inlays. It was simple and eloquent and it made his heart race. He could tell it was an older ring but very well taken care of.
He ran a finger over it before looking at Markus. "It's beautiful."
Markus smiled slightly and closed the box, putting it back in his pocket. "I'm glad you think so. Connor… I think we need-" Markus said before getting cut off with his cue to walk on stage.
He gave him a quick kiss to his cheek before walking out, and Connor watched him on the screen.
He had that small smile he used for the public. It was so different from his real one, but it was still nice to look at.
He waved at the ground and they went wild. This was the first time he had agreed to go on a show like this. He was always busy with leading and going to meetings with the government. Josh, Simon, and North all made sure the questions would be appropriate and Markus would be able to answer them.
The hostess, Allyssa Evatt, greeted Markus with a gentle hug. She had a lean face with a cleft chin, a pointed nose, small ears, defined cheekbones, and full lips.
Her hair was mid-back length, fine, blonde, which is worn in a cascading style. Her bright gray-blue eyes are large and wide, giving her an innocent look. It wasn’t odd that Connor noted all that about her, as he was still protecting Markus, even now. Even from people that he knew weren’t a threat.
The two sat down and there's clearly room for Connor to come out.
As they got through the normal questions about android rights, it became clear to everyone that Ms. Evatt was pro-android.
She was also an amazing hostess and kept the conversation flowing and easy going. She interacted with the audience and Markus fluidly, making it seem natural.
She moved the conversation along to other topics, just to get to know about Markus more. He wasn't super secretive about himself, but he much rather talk about his people and what they needed.
Markus did just as well anyways, smiling slightly and chuckling whenever appropriate. He stayed calm and collected and answered each question as honestly as possible. At least until she brought up Connor.
"So, we've all seen the pictures of you and...Connor right?" She asked, and the audience went deadly silent. Overdramatic, Connor thought with a smile.
Markus hesitated for a second before he ducked his head and honestly grinned. Connor can tell it made everyone melt, he felt the same. "Yes, Connor. We hadn't expected to be, well, caught so quickly."
Evatt nodded and looked to the audience then back at Markus. "Well, I don't think he did either- because we caught him today! Connor, come on out!" She called and the crowd started clapping.
Connor took a deep breath before walking out. The light was momentarily blinding so he gives a small wave towards the audience as he adjusted.
Markus was by his side in an instant and lacing their hands together. The clapping got louder at that and Connor could hear a few awws. "Smile, sunflower," Markus whispered in his ear.
Connor nodded and grinned slightly, but it probably looked incredibly awkward. He was never good at faking it when it came to smiling.
The two walked over to the couch and Connor reached out to shake her hand. They all sat back down and slowly the crowd calmed enough so they could talk.
"Connor Anderson, welcome. I'm so glad to have you!" Evatt said, smiling at him. He has to admit, she was beautiful and definitely charming. Not nearly at the level of Markus, but he was a bit biased.
"Thank you for having us," Connor nodded, still not letting go of Markus.
He wasn't particularly fond of being in front of so many people even though he knew what was going to happen. Markus squeezed his hand slightly and leaned into him.
"So, I know we're all thinking about it. Are you two officially together?" She asked, leaning forward just slightly.
Markus and Connor look at each other and Connor gave a slight nod for him to talk. "We are, for over three years now." At that, the crowd gave a joyous applause.
Evatt grinned and clapped along. "That's a long time! Congratulations! Do you two live together?"
"I mostly go over to Jericho, but I still have a place to stay at the Lieutenant's house. We've been thinking about getting our own place, but it'll be hard to drag Markus away from Jericho." Connor said, looking to Markus for approval. He gave a slight nod and Connor sagged in relief.
The crowd chuckled at that and Markus gave a sheepish smile. "Ah, that's true. We're lucky we even get to go on dates."
"Speaking of, how come no one has seen you two out together until now?" Evatt questioned, but keeps it clear she isn't judging.
"Oh, well we didn't want to be public and be bombarded with questions. We finally had enough and decided to no longer hide in the shadows. We knew we could take whatever the public threw at us." Markus said, letting go of Connor's hand to put a hand around his shoulder.
Evatt gave an understanding nod. "We are all glad you felt comfortable enough. Thank you for coming to us to let us know!"
Connor nodded and he desperately wanted his coin, he did have it in his pocket but he kept his hands in his lap. "It's nice to be here, together."
"Ok, so I do have a few questions for you guys if that's ok?" Evatt asked and grinned when they both nodded. "Alright, so the first one is… who's the better cook?"
Connor snorted and tried to cover it up, but it's clear everyone saw and heard. Thankfully everyone just seems to aw at it. "Definitely Markus. I can cook but I'm better at baking."
Which was true. He loved to bake while Markus could make any meal. "Well, I was made for that, so it's you that's special," Markus said before pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Evatt gives a little aww at the two before pulling herself back together. "That's so sweet! Alright, what's a pet peeve you have of each other?"
Connor grinned smugly and easily answered. "He doesn't always fold his clothes and he generally just throws them towards the basket instead of getting up to put it in."
Markus fake gasped and put a hand over where his heart would be. "Hey! I think I deserve to just throw them after the long days I have."
Connor raised an eyebrow at him. "My days are just as long as yours and yet I always put them in the basket and I fold my clothes. I even iron them!"
"Ugh, I know. I mean, you didn't seem too upset last night after I…" Markus started wiggling his eyebrows, but Connor covered his mouth with his hand.
"Nope! We are not talking about that." He said, playfully glaring at him. Markus smirked then licked his hand and Connor pulled it back. "Markus!"
Markus shrugged slightly and chuckled when Connor wiped his hand on him. It's almost too easy to act like a couple. "That's not the only thing I've li-" but he was cut off again by Connor opening his mouth and making a loud beeping sound.
The whole crowd burst into laughter and Connor shrunk down, his face slightly flushing blue. He hadn't even thought about how odd that would be for humans to see. Though at this point most had probably seen an android making odd noises.
"Adorable," Markus mumbled in his ear loud enough for only him to hear. That just made Connor blush more and try to hide his face in Markus's shoulder.
Markus gently ran a hand through his hair and he almost immediately let his body go limp and closed his eyes.
"Oh goodness, you two are definitely the cutest couple I've ever talked to." Evatt gushed. Connor groaned slightly before pulling himself up and fixing his hair with a half-hearted flare thrown at Markus.
"Thank you, he really is the love of my life," Markus said, staring right at Connor. It felt like time froze and Connor's eyes went wide.
He didn't know why, but he had a feeling Markus at least kind of meant it. Probably only slightly but he did mean it and it made Connor's heart pound.
He didn't even hear what Evatt said next, but thankfully Markus did so he easily answered it.
"Alright, so I did hear that you have a big announcement to make," Evatt said, drawing Connor out of his shock.
Markus nodded and grinned at Connor, throwing him a wink. "That I do. Connor, would you stand up with me?" Markus asked, holding out his hand.
Connor would definitely be sweating if he could, instead he had to try to pull himself together as subtly as he could. He took the hand and stood up, letting Markus move him until they were perfect.
Markus held both of his hands and locked eyes, not even glancing at the audience. "Connor, I've known you for so long. At first, I was worried about you. I was never scared, I just wanted to help you be free. Then you came to me and after that, I didn't want to lose you."
"You went to the tower and I was terrified I'd never see you again. And yet you came marching to me with all those androids behind you. You helped set our people free." Markus grinned, giving their hands a soft squeeze.
"Then I got to know you, and you were just as amazing as I expected, if not more. It didn't take long until we got together. The days spent with you are the best of my life, and I'd never give them up."
Markus took a deep breath before being able to continue. "I love you. I know I don't say that much, but I do. It's real to me. So," Markus slowly knelt down, and the audience all gasped.
"Will you marry me?" Markus asked, pulling out the ring. The whole place is so silent Connor can hear how fast Markus's thirium pump is going.
Then Markus's words struck him. He said that it was real to him. No, no that couldn't be. This was probably just him getting confused. Emotions were hard, so he wouldn't blame him.
And yet… And yet Connor wanted it to be real. He wanted the grins, the kisses, and touches to be real. He wanted to go on real dates and he wanted to be with Markus.
Hank's words echoed in his head, 'Just don't go falling in love or anything'.
He had played the part so perfectly. He stopped them before they went too far, and he made it believable.
He had failed at Hank's one request and he would fail for this too. He stared down at Markus with tears in his eyes. No doubt the audience thought it was from happiness, but that couldn't be farther from the truth.
It had been too long and everyone was on edge, even Markus. He knew the people currently watching were dying to his response.
"I… I'm so sorry," He mumbled before turning and running. He ignored the crowd's reaction and just rushed for an exit.
He burst out the doors and glanced around before remembering he had taken a taxi since he didn't want to mess up his hair. He took off running, easily dodging people, and not slowing down.
He kept running until he's at the harbor where Jericho used to be. Now there was a monument for the androids that had died there.
Connor was gasping for breath, and his mind was still going too fast. He didn't even think when he answered Hank's call.
'Son, are you alright? Where are you?' Hank asked. Right, he was probably watching the show just like millions of others.
"Hank, I'm so sorry. I- I couldn't. Hank, I could do the one thing you told me not to. I'm sorry." He sobbed, sliding down the wall to sit down and curl up.
'Woah, kid. What thing? What did you do?' Hank asked, keeping his voice as calm as possible.
Connor huffed and pulled at his hair. "I fell in love! I love him, ok? You told me not to, and yet I did."
Hank sighed, and Connor could practically hear his eye roll. It really wasn’t helping right now. 'Connor, you were in love with him well before the whole fake dating thing. You just didn't know it.'
No! No, that couldn't be right. He would have known that he was in love. Right? "What? Hank, no. No, it only started recently."
'You only started noticing recently because you had hope. Kid, whenever he's around you become happier. You obviously want to be around him, and you'd give your life for him.'
"I'd give my life for any of my friends, that doesn't prove anything!" He sobbed, squeezing his eyes closed.
'True, but son, falling in love takes a while. I've seen the way you look at him and it hasn't changed since the fake dating. He looks at you the same way. I'm a damn good detective, I know what love looks like.' Connor hated how much that made sense. How true it felt, but it couldn't be.
Why hadn't he known? Why hadn't Markus said anything? This was why they could play their parts perfectly. This was why he was more embarrassed about his own reactions than he should have been.
He had known all this time, and yet he denied it. He denied it because he was scared of the feelings and scared of getting hurt or hurting someone else. He never saw himself as someone who'd someone would fall in love with, yet Markus still did.
"I love him," Connor mumbled, mostly to himself.
Hank gave a slight hum. 'Son, where are you? I can come pick you up or send Markus your way. Either way, I think you two should talk. Actually talk, not jump around it. You both deserve to know the truth.'
The thought of seeing Markus made his heart race with both fear and anticipation. He wanted to be with him so badly and yet he still doubted that Markus could actually love him. Even with everything he had said and done, Connor still was unsure.
"Can I just be alone here a little while longer?" He would see Markus, but for now, he needed a few minutes to collect his thoughts.
'Of course. Do you want me to stay on call?' Hank asked, and Connor really owed him a long hug and maybe making his favorite meal.
"Yes, please. I don't want to be completely alone right now." He answered meekly. There was a difference between isolated and alone, and he was glad Hank understood that.
'You're never alone.' Hank said and Connor slowly nodded.
He had friends and family. People he never thought would accept him as he is. He made friends in people he never thought possible, and a family with a man who had lost his own.
They all made him so much happier than he ever thought he could be. He had accepted that Markus may not have trusted him. He had been ready to die for his people at the tower. He expected to. Yet he lived, and he really did help free his people.
Markus kept reaching out to him after they had won, and Connor never knew why. Was it because they were both from the RK line? Had he also felt that unusual connection pulling them together?
What had Markus seen in him that made him trust Connor completely? How had he known that he wouldn't still be willing to stab him in the back after he deviated?
He had so many questions and never enough answers. How could Markus have fallen in love with him was the biggest one yet. He didn't understand and yet he knew it was true.
He sat there for what felt like an eternity, but it was only an hour or so. The wind had made his hair even move out of place than his own hands had done.
Hank stayed on the call with him as Connor requested, and it definitely helped. He had calmed down enough that the thought of seeing Markus didn't send him into a panic again.
He pulled himself up, brushing off his clothes before calling for a cab. "Hank, I'll meet you back at your place ok? You can… you can let Markus know I'm coming."
'Alright. See you soon, Connor.'
"See you soon," Connor said before hanging up. Hank will be there with him if he needs, and he'll finally talk to Markus.
Though, he did literally say no to him on live tv. Shit, that probably didn't look good at all. Not to mention he also left Markus to have to clean it all up. Now he really looked like a jerk. He'd have to apologize for that too.
He let his mind wander to different memories of Markus as the cab took him home. He didn't just think of the fake dating, he thought about all of it.
All the times he stood silently behind Markus, but he'd still look back at him and smile. The time when Markus was shot and Connor had panicked.
That time when they all decided to get the upgrade to be able to eat food. Connor opening up about how it was hard to drink plain thirium if it was warm or room temperature since it reminded him too much of crime scenes. How Markus had made sure to keep cold thirium, and thirium infused foods so he could still get the thirium he needed.
All the small things Markus did to make sure he was happy and comfortable. Markus always made sure he was safe even when he was the one that really needed protection.
Connor could have asked for anything and Markus would have tried to get it for him. He hadn't even noticed that, but apparently, others had. How long had Markus known?
His thoughts were interrupted when the taxi came to a stop. He took his time getting out and walking up to the door. He could hear two different footsteps, so Markus was already here.
That was fine. He could do this. He took a deep breath before walking in.
Markus and Hank both turned to look at him as he shuffled in. He couldn't look at Markus, and he could barely look at Hank.
"Alright, you two sit down and talk. I'll be in the living room if you need me." Hank said, moving away. Honestly, there wasn't much distance between the living room and kitchen, but Connor was glad for that.
Markus slowly sat down and Connor did the same, picking at the table.
"Connor-"
"Markus-" they both start. Connor chuckled awkwardly and kept his eyes on the table. "Sorry, you go first."
"No! No, please you. I think I've talked enough," Markus said, frowning at himself.
Connor wanted so badly to reach over and take his hand, but he held back. "I'm sorry for running. It just… it became so real, you know? I realized a few things and I just couldn't lie anymore."
"I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have said what I did, but Connor, I did mean it. I should have told you a long time ago, but I was scared. I thought you'd reject me, I mean, it wasn't like you showed interest in dating anyone. I didn't want to put that kind of pressure on you if you couldn't feel the same."
"I- I was denying my feelings for a long time. I didn't see how anyone could love me, let alone you. I didn't want to hurt you." It hurt to say out loud, but it needed to be. Markus deserved to know the truth.
"Connor, I trust you. I only let you become my guard because it's you. I still am unsure of that because I know it'll put you in even more danger. I can't lose you." Markus said, offering his hand.
The skin on his hand pulled back and Connor didn't know what to do. If he connected then Markus will see and feel everything. He'll know everything, and that's terrifying.
Yet Markus knew that Connor would also be able to see all of his memories and feelings. Markus was offering to be completely open with him.
He slowly reached out and pressed his hand to Markus's, both of their palms glowing blue. Then they both accepted the interface and were flooded with so much information it's hard to even breathe.
Connor saw Carl, he could feel how content Markus was with him. How much love he had for the man even before deviation. He saw Leo, and how the police came in and felt how scared Markus was.
Then it was like a nightmare. He felt Markus crawling, trying to survive. All of the guilt he felt as he took the parts he needed. He could feel the rain on his face and then he saw Jericho.
He got to witness everything Markus went through, and even how he felt when seeing Connor. It was true, he wasn't scared, at least not for his own life.
The memories went by so fast that he could hardly process them. Yet he still felt like he could understand Markus.
He didn't know how long he sat there connected to Markus. He knew Markus was also seeing everything and he wondered how he'd react.
He'd get to see Amanda and what he had done and almost done to his people. Would Markus still love and accept him?
Shit, he'd also probably see those few times he had gotten off to the idea of Markus. That was beyond embarrassing.
Though he hadn't seen any type of memory like that from Markus, so maybe it was just what Connor let him see.
Then the interface stopped, but neither pulled their hands back or reactivated their skin. They sat there staring at each other with wide eyes.
"Connor, it's not your fault," Markus said, breaking the silence. "I promise, I would never hold that against you."
"I don't know how you can't," he mumbled.
"Am I a terrible person for taking those parts?" Markus asked, rubbing his thumb in circles.
Connor quickly shook his head. "No! You were just trying to survive."
Markus raised an eyebrow at him. "So were you. Connor, you could have been killed if you did something Cyberlife didn't like. You did the bare minimum you had to, you let so many of our people go. You are a hero."
Connor was left momentarily speechless. How could any man be this kind and understanding? He didn't pity Connor, he empathized with him.
"I love you," he whispered, tears streaming down his face again. Markus was up in an instant and pulling him into a hug.
He was so warm, and Connor felt so safe. He let himself be held and feel accepted and forgiven. "I'm so sorry, I love you."
Markus pulled back and cupped his face, gently brushing away the tears. "You have nothing to be sorry for. I love you too."
Then Markus was pulling him into the gentlest kiss ever, and Connor melted into it. It was just as wonderful as all the other kisses they shared, but Connor let himself feel. He let his emotions rush through him without worrying about what they could mean.
They slowly pulled back and Connor couldn't help but smile. "Does this mean you'll be my real boyfriend?" He said, resting their foreheads against each other.
"Of course. Though, this is going to be hard to explain." Markus said, chuckling.
Oh shit. "Fuck. What are we going to tell them?"
Markus shrugged and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. "I don't know, but we'll figure it out. Together."

Portrait of a Young Man: Part Four
[Of course! Rudeness would be out of place, and it is free of charge.]
It is a moment before you decide, your eyes flickering between her impenetrable gaze and her rather odd appearance -- and then you are reaching your own hand towards hers, hesitant. Perhaps a little too hesitant. The crimson-clad woman snaps up your hand with her own in the blink of an eye, catching you off guard, and you very nearly startle off your seat. Thankfully, she doesn’t seem to notice. The woman flashes you a quick, toothy smile before bringing your palm towards her face, somehow inspecting the skin through the smoked glass. Given the thickness of the spectacles -- you cannot even catch the shape or color of her eyes as she bends over -- it is a wonder that she can see through them at all.
“Marvelous decision, my child!” she says in a sing-song tone. For the first time, you notice that she is wearing gloves. They match the ostentatious crimson of her gown. “Marvelous, marvelous, marvelous. I’ll make sure you won’t regret it.”
“Thank you, but is there any particular --”
A chilling sensation on the surface of your skin forces you to pause mid-sentence. It is as if an icicle has struck it. As if the skin there has suddenly felt the unpleasant sensation of frostbite. Your eyes flicker instinctively to what your body tells you is a wounded area, searching the woman’s hands for some hidden needle or whatnot -- but your search proves unfruitful. The hand that holds yours is gloved completely. The finger that traces it is not.
The woman hums. “Quite the bright little one, weren’t you?” she remarks, an icy finger trailing the inner flesh of your palm. You do your best not to shiver. “Astounding in all sorts of academic fields and everything you put -- oh! Perhaps that is not so, anymore. But that doesn’t matter much now, does it? Surely there are better ways for you to succeed in life.”
You clench your teeth at the sensation, which only seems to worsen by the moment. “Is there anything interesting in my near future, then? Anything I should be wary of?”
“Oh, come now, I’m a fortune teller, not a seer!” The woman laughs. It is brisk and shrill. “Reading palms only gives you a hint of the future, not the entirety of its tale. And wouldn’t it be so much less fun if you knew everything that was to happen?”
“No.”
“Ah, well, there’s nothing I can do about that negative attitude.” Her finger releases your flesh for a moment, granting it temporary relief, but in less than a moment it meets the surface of your palm again. It traces icy trails elsewhere, now following some line that must pass between your forefinger and thumb. “You’ve had a very great many things that have happened to you in life,” she continues. “Not all of them are good, but not all of them are bad, either. Suppose it’s just the way you look at it. Tell me, child, what was it you decided to travel for again? A family friend? Some business?”
“I’m currently on the way to --” she presses into the flesh, and you hiss, “-- the northern mountains for some business.”
“Business?” Her smoked spectacles slip down her nose. You catch the golden, slitted eyes beneath, nearly gasping at the sight. Her grip is tight on your hand. “Or is it revenge?”
You hold her gaze for a long moment. Her golden eyes -- they are wrong, wrong, wrong -- bore into yours. Her lips part once more to reveal an impressive set of needle-like teeth, each intermeshing with the other perfectly, and she smiles quite broadly at you. Her forked tongue slips out from between her teeth, tasting the air. Tasting you.
You should’ve known. You should’ve known all along. Beneath the lavender water, the smoked glass, the gloves -- this woman is a devil.
Her grip releases just slightly on your own hand, the muscles relaxing, and you take the opportunity to snatch your hand back. You cradle it in the other, attempting to massage feeling back into it. The crimson-clad devil before you only laughs in delight, apparently amused at the fear that has surely made itself apparent on your features. A moment, and the she-devil slips the glove back onto her hand. She reaches for the glass and taps the rim with her long claws, her grin only growing wider and wider.
“You look so lovely when you’re frightened, you know,” says the devil. “And that fear, that anger -- how wonderfully tempting you are. I’ve half a mind to devour you at this moment!”
You glare at her. “I’m not afraid.”
“Oh, of course you aren’t. They never are until the last moment.” The she-devil waves her hand in dismissal. “But you should know that it’s a sin to lie.”
“Those are lofty words, coming from you.”
The devil only hums in response. Another moment, and then she begins to stand, tucking away the spectacles of smoked glass into some breast pocket. Evidently there is little need to disguise herself at the moment. You watch as she makes her way towards the door of the cabin.
She turns to give you one last smile. “Consider it a lesson!” she sings. “A very important one, if you know what you’re getting into. The fire will consume you before the brimstone, my child. Remember that.”
And then she is gone. There is only the scent of sulfur in the air, the mask of lavender water and perfume quickly disappearing from the cramped space.
The same man who had served you lunch arrives not long after, prepared to take away your dishes. You look hastily in the direction of where the she-devil had left her wine glass after you hand him your own dishes, fully expecting to need to reach over the table. By the time you look, however, it is gone.
* * *
The rest of the trip passes rather uneventfully. It is a lengthy, boring journey by train that is seceded by an equally boring journey by automobile. It appears that Mr. Diavolo only hires the most tightlipped drivers.
You find yourself mulling over the she-devil during the course of the journey, your memories flickering to and fro. The smell of sulfur, just hidden by lavender water. The golden, slitted eyes, hidden skillfully by the smoked glass. The forked tongue. The needle-teeth. You were so sure that she had left her wine glass, that she had gripped your skin hard enough to bruise -- and yet there had been no trace of her. It was as if she had disappeared into thin air.
A feat that may very well be possible for a devil, for all you know. Perhaps you are not going mad. Perhaps you had not imagined her at all, and the she-devil had simply decided to play a nasty trick on you.
It is a very long journey in the automobile.
The driver rouses you after some time -- you are not exactly how long it has been, considering how night appears to have long fallen -- and you scramble out of the car as quickly as you can, nearly falling over your cane. The driver merely grunts when you ask him a question, hauling your suitcase from the back of the automobile. There is a rather harsh glance at your complexion. You fix him with a both determined and vexed stare when he finally places your bag by your feet, not bothering to take it up the stairs for you. He sighs.
“Be back in about six days,” the driver says gruffly. “Provided that the weather’s good and all, o’ course. You’re one of the first ones here, so don’t expect some grand greeting when you walk in.”
The door of the automobile slams shut with an air of finality before you can even ask anything else, and then the automobile goes tottering down the mountain road.
Before you is the private estate of Mr. Diavolo, its form looming before you like some great beast. Its tall spires are jagged teeth, its windows the eyes through which its occupants watch you from within. The eccentric, twisting shape can be attributed to no one else but a demon, for surely the architects of Hell must have odd tastes, and its stained glass shines with an almost unnaturally saturated hue. And then there is the great, crimson door before you, its knocker a polished bronze lion.
Unfortunately, there are several stairs before you. Given that the driver was nowhere near hospitable enough to carry them for you, you’ll have to manage them with both your cane and suitcase in hand. You begin to --
The great doors fly open. You nearly fall face first into the stone, but you turn just quickly enough to avoid smashing your chin completely against it. Still, your body meets the ground rather painfully.
“Look, another one’s here!” calls out a voice from the doorway. You squint to see the silhouette of a slender, rather short figure, its arm waving frantically. “Come quick, come quick!”
“It is nearly midnight, Asmodeus,” grumbles another. This one seems to originate from just out of sight, and it is only moments before I hear the sound of footsteps. “Surely this can wait until --”
“Absolutely not,” argues the first voice. “And look, this one’s a darling!”
“That darling is on the ground.”
“Oh. Oh my.”
It takes another second for your vision to clear. When it does you see two men: one a petite, nearly androgynous beauty, the other a regal and dark-haired. The petite one strides up to you with several quick bounds and sticks his hand out to you, offering you an amiable smile. You stare at him for a moment -- taking in the perfectly coiffed hair, the hint of foundation, the strange air of nobility about him -- and then you place your hand in his proffered one. He pulls you back to standing with ease.
“Are you alright?” asks the petite man. “You seem to have taken a nasty spill there.”
“I suppose I am now, Sir …” you trail off, not quite sure what to call him.
The petite man regards you with some confusion for a moment, waiting for you to finish, and then catches your meaning. “Oh, there’s no need to call me that,” says the man, breaking into that disarming smile once more. “I’m not a blueblood like that one over here. My friends call me Asmo.”
What a strange name, you think. Who in their right mind would name their child that?
“Oh,” you manage. “Well, thank you for --”
The dark-haired one finally stands within a respectable distance, stepping forward. He sighs. “Don’t you think it’s a little too early to be flirting?”
The petite man cocks a brow. “Flirting? Who said I was flirting?”
“I did.” The dark-haired man scowls at Asmo, his irritation having fully surfaced. A lack of sleep, perhaps, given the hour. He ignores you. “Now, could we please just get her through the door?”
“Oh, you’re only jealous that I was the one to --”
“No, I’m simply --”
“-- since you simply couldn’t be bothered to --”
You’ll be damned if you let these two fools bicker before you the entire night. Whatever regality or nobility that you had thought surrounded these two men has long gone, lost in the wind of their fickle argument.
“Georgine!” you say a bit too loudly, demanding the attention of the two before you. They regard you at the same time, Asmo’s hand poised in half of a gesture. “My name is Georgine,” you say with your most arresting tone, attempting to halt whatever argument may continue. “I appreciate the sentiment, but don’t you think it’s time we headed in?”
Asmo hand withers slightly. The dark-haired man simply stares. Your gaze flickers between the both of them. You realize the awkwardness of the situation.
Finally, the dark-haired man decides to clear his throat. “Right,” he says. He turns towards Asmo. “Since you’re the only gentleman around here, I don’t suppose you’d have any misgivings about helping her to her room?”
And so he does. It is only after a moment or so that Asmo realizes your lack of a limb, his eyes casting once towards where your leg should be, and fetches your cane for you. The dark-haired one looks at you -- not quite avoiding the missing appendage, yet not quite staring openly either -- and then walks back inside. Asmo takes your hand gladly in his and follows suit. You step past the threshold.
The nostalgia is almost overwhelming.
Aside from the occasional figure or statue, the appearance of the entrance hall may as well have been ripped from the fabric of your memories. It is the very image of decadence: a massive chandelier hangs from the ceiling, casting its light upon the brocade walls and a pair of open staircases. The walls boast an impressive collection of baroque paintings, each made with a different technique, and a rather sizable rug -- imported from the Orient, perhaps -- lies before you. The weight of your childhood comes crashing down onto you all at once, so shocking is the image. Your father had brought you here a fair amount of times during the golden years of his business empire to discuss matters of the soul trade.
Your eyes trace the carved banister. Asmo talks at length on one topic or another, bantering with the dark-haired man, but the sound is a distant, far off clamor. The world is muddled with the buzz of your thoughts, your conscience smothered by your memories. Your father had held you by the hand at the base of the stairs there. Some official or businessman had offered you a boiled sweet in exchange for running off and playing somewhere else. You had nearly crashed into the gilded statue in that corner. There used to be a chip in that archway here. Each reminiscence nearly devours you.
Then you catch the image of a sharp, dark pair of shoes. Your heart stops.
As does Asmo. It takes him only a moment to glance at the figure at the top of the railing. He waves. The dark-haired one offers a simple greeting.
“Georgine!” Mr. Diavolo stands at the balcony, all golden eyes and hellfire locks. He grins, his sharp, white teeth gleaming even in the dim light. “How wonderful of you to come! How was the journey?”
[Answer in kind. You are a guest here, after all. Despite your circumstances, you must follow social obligations.]
[Refuse to speak to him. How dare he speak to you in such a manner! This devil is no friend of yours.]
[Say something cutting in response. This demon deserves not your politeness.]

Cadence Update - 33

My wish for you Is that this life becomes all that you want it to Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small You never need to carry more than you can hold And while you’re out there gettin’ where you’re gettin’ to I hope you know somebody loves you And wants the same things too\
My Wish - Rascal Flatts
-----------
A week went by, but nothing happened. Everyone was on edge, but all managed to pretend they were fine. Nero called Kyrie every day to check on the kids, and Vergil could hear the worry in his voice every time they spoke. Dante grew more and more restless, flying back and forth between Redgrave and Fortuna to take on any hint of demons. Nico continued to watch the DVD, but she could only work about half an hour at a time as the video kept freezing up and it took far too long to fix it.
Vergil went through some of the information with her, but it didn’t provide any insight into Mundus’ plan. It all seemed very straight forward. Demonic kidneys transplanted into demons with human forms. A liver for another. Lots of blood transfusions. Nico had yet to find Roxy’s surgery, and Vergil wasn’t certain Roxy would even want to see it.
“I’m sorry, Rox,” Nico said. “I wish I could get through it faster.”
Roxy just shook her head. “You’re doing your best. I’m sorry I haven’t been helping.”
Vergil did, however, manage to convince Roxy to keep working with her powers, if only to overcome her fear. It had taken many attempts to persuade her, as she struggled to get the temporary transformation out of her mind. But eventually, Vergil was able to coerce her into at least trying to learn small facets of her power. They focused on defense. She was summoning small walls for a shield, knocking things out of the sky and surrounding his own body with ice crystals. Anything they could think of to help him fight. Eventually, she started enchanting Aki’s arrows with ice and managed to freeze the enemies she hit. “Kuro used to do that for me,” She told him. “So, it wasn’t too hard to pick up.”
“You should still be proud,” Vergil said.
He’d gotten a ghost of a smile for that, but she hadn’t responded.
Now they were out wandering Redgrave, searching for any demons they could find. Nico was in the van less than a mile away, finishing up the last of the DVD. They all hoped it would be enough, but Roxy had too much on her mind to wait around.
“You know Dante got my mail yesterday,” She said as she plopped down on a piece of cement and looked over at him.
“Yes,” He said, leaning against the building. His human form was easy to maintain now. Almost easier than Shadow. If only V’s form was better in a fight. Vergil was fairly certain he’d break his bones just touching a demon, much less attacking one. She’d tried to summon his actual self but had only managed to change his hair. But Vergil was hopeful. She was getting stronger, little by little. He just didn’t know how much time they had left.
She reached into the inside of her jacket and pulled out an envelope with a golden seal. “An invitation to the gala,” She said. “He actually sent it.” She turned it in her hand. “It feels like a lifetime since we’ve talked about it.”
“Are you planning on going?”
“I haven’t had any time to paint,” She said. “I don’t even know if I have any creative energy left.”
“I’m sure you do,” Vergil said. “You just need some time.”
“What would I even present?” She said. “Assuming my house hasn’t been ransacked by now, all I was working on were flowers and butterflies.”
“And they were quite beautiful.”
She blushed as she met his gaze. “But I need something new. Something original.” She shook her head. “And with everything that’s happened...”
“Paint Kuro,” Vergil said. “You never did finish the mural.”
Her eyes seemed to glaze over in thought. “No I suppose I didn’t,” She said, her voice quiet as she held her hand out. A small ball of ice appeared, hovering there for a moment before she sent it away with a small, but unreadable smile. “A girl and her dragon.”
They looked up as the squealing of tires echoed in the distance. Nico barrelled around the corner, barely keeping the van on all four wheels as she slammed on the break and skidded to a spot. “Rox!” She said as she leaned her head out the window. “I think you’ll want to see this.”
Roxy glanced at Vergil as Nico disappeared into the back of the van. “How did she find us?”
“She always does,” Vergil said, helping her up.
“I’m still not convinced the van isn’t a demon.”
Vergil chuckled as the side door opened. “Come on!” Nico said, beckoning to them both. Roxy hopped in and Vergil narrowly made it inside before Nico slammed the door back closed. “I was watchin’ that tape,” Nico said as she tried to rewind it, hitting the remote a few times before it worked. “And I found this.” When she stopped, a man appeared on the screen. His resemblance to Roxy was uncanny; similar jaw-line, same hair color, eye color, and general build. This man, however, looked like he’d been run ragged. And considering the empty basement behind him, Vergil assumed he and Dia had just gotten done cleaning it all out.
“Dad,” Roxy murmured, her hands gripping the edges of her coat with such force that her knuckles had turned white.
“Roxanna,” Her father said with a small smile. “It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to speak to you, and I’m afraid it might be longer still.” Roxy’s eyes widened, but she didn’t speak. Her father smiled, and Vergil swore he saw a twinkle in the man’s eyes. “If you’re watching this, then you probably already know what I did to save you. I really hope Kuro or Dia told you before you watched this, or that might have been a terrible shock,” He chuckled, but it was strained and quickly followed by a sigh. “I want you to know that I tried to find another way out of this, but I’m afraid this will be my last night on this earth.”
Roxy’s hands wrapped tighter around her as her father continued. “I don’t know where you’ll be when you see this. I hope you’re happy and healthy and living life to the fullest. I hope you’ve found someone to cherish you even more than I have, whether it be Kuro or someone else entirely. I hope you have it in your heart to forgive everyone involved,” He paused and lowered his voice. “A few weeks ago, Raijin informed me that Mundus has taken his heart.”
“His heart?” She echoed. “What does he want?”
“Before he was taken away, Raijin warned me that Mundus has a prisoner whose body he hopes to use to cross fully into our world.” Vergil’s blood rain cold and Roxy shivered without looking at him. “Apparently he doesn’t believe any other body will work, and I know he wants to use my research to accomplish it.” His eyes closed for a moment as he took a long, deep breath. “I’m certain that Raijin has been commanded to take my work and kill me, as Mundus would never work with a human so far below him.”
He glanced behind him. “But I made sure there’s only a small amount left for him to find… enough to save Raijin’s life… and enough for you.” He shook his head with another, small smile. “He won’t be able to enter this place until you do. Dia’s going to seal everything up once I’m done. And don’t worry if he took the notebook. We already agreed that was what he would return to Mundus with.”
“But why?” She whispered. “What good is it going to do?”
“The notes are incomplete,” Her father continued. “The information is incorrect in some places. Missing in others. Mundus might believe he has everything I’ve ever written, but all he has is a bunch of medical jargon and a mess of scientist notes. Will it stop him? Probably not. Raijin knows enough about my work that he will be forced to interpret it, but I hope it gives you and Dia the time to find someone who can help.”
Roxy glanced at Vergil for the briefest moment. “It was you,” She muttered. Vergil didn’t reply; his stray thoughts were more than enough.
“Roxy…” Her father said. “My beautiful, wonderful daughter.” Tears filled the corners of his eyes. “I can’t imagine what you’re feeling right now, but please don’t blame yourself for anything. Not for Kuro’s decision. Not for your sister’s death. Not for your mother’s failing health. Nothing. None of this is your fault. Raijin is fighting, but I know one day Mundus’ influence will be too much. He will come for you, and I pray you find a way to save him.”
“Save him,” Roxy echoed. “After everything…?”
“But I hope someday, somehow, you’ll see this and know how much I love you.” Her father blinked rapidly, dispelling any tears he could. He wasn’t very successful. “And I hope one day you can forgive me.” He smiled through his sadness.
As the video ended, the world shook. Roxy flinched, reaching instinctively for Vergil. Except that just destabilized him and they both ended on the couch. Nico stumbled past them both, reaching for a chair. Cracks appeared in the asphalt around them. “Shit,” Nico said as she made it to the front seat and threw the car in reverse. They hit a bump on the way, throwing Roxy to the ground as she dragged Vergil with her. He transformed before he landed on top of her, growling in annoyance. Roxy forced herself back to her feet as another shake jarred the van.
“What’s going on?” She said as she eventually found her way to the passenger seat.
“Hell if I know!” Nico said as she spun the wheel. She slammed on the breaks when more cracks appeared, throwing Vergil into the back of the seat. He heard a groan from Roxy and felt a pulse of pain in his chest. “Sorry,” Nico said.
“It’s fine,” Roxy said. “It’s not like I needed my ribcage.”
That’s when the demons emerged. Small creatures like the empusas scurried from the cracks to their side. Multiple scythes snapped up from the darkness before the ghoulish beings attached to them emerged, moaning and groaning as they wandered toward them. Three furies snapped up in a blur, landing and summoning their blades. Another jolt knocked a few of the weaker ones off their feet, but the others stalked forward. “Vergil,” Roxy said as she scrambled to the backseat and swung the door open, summoning her bow. “Fury's first or I don’t think we’ll last long.”
“You’ve never managed to shoot down a fury.”
“Well, I better figure it out now, huh.” She launched a trio of arrows, but the furies lurched forward. Roxy rolled out of the van, barely dodging a swipe and fired another shot. Vergil knocked the second fury out of the air, impaling it with his tail long enough for her to stab it with Kuro’s sword. The third fury appeared behind her. Roxy pulled back as the blade cut her shirt. When her hand snapped out to catch herself, a spike of ice shot out of the ground, piercing the fury’s chest. The third one slipped, and Vergil managed to catch it with his tail as she shot it.
“Does that count?” She said as she rolled to her feet.
“It wasn’t moving.”
“Still shot it.”
Vergil rolled his eyes as they turned on the other demons. Except they were gone, and a certain red-jacketed half-demon was standing in their place. “Good!” Dante said. “You got the other ones.”
The earth rumbled again. In the distance, Vergil could sense more demons all congregating in one area. But where? The underworld itself was breaking through the ground and Vergil didn’t know why.
“Take a wild guess where they’re coming from, Verge,” Dante said.
He looked up at Roxy’s blank expression, then back to Dante. He growled, hoping it would convey a silent where? Dante sighed, running his hands through his hair. “That stupid tree,” He said.
“The tree?” Roxy said. “You mean that giant thing that broke through Redgrave?”
“The thing I raised,” Vergil thought bitterly. “It can’t be back. We cut it down.”
When Roxy relayed this, Dante nodded. “It’s not back… but that’s where the hole’s the biggest.”
A gentle thud drew their attention. “He’s coming,” Raijin said as he leaned against the van. Nico scowled in the front seat, but wisely remained where she was.
Dante reached for his sword. “Bold of you to come straight to us.”
“That is what he demanded,” Raijin said, eyes locked on Roxy. “He’s not very happy that his favorite prisoner actually took my brother’s place.”
Vergil glared at him, but it was Roxy who took a step forward. “There’s a way out of this,” Roxy said. “A way you can live.”
Raijin scoffed. “What makes you think I want to?”
“Let me deal with this, Rox,” Dante said. “I'll make it quick.”
“Where’s Nero?” She said.
“Fighting demons with some other devil hunters,” He said. “Why?”
“Demons are coming from the center,” She said. “It needs to be closed.”
“We’re not totally sure how to do that,” Dante said.
“Go figure it out.”
He paused, eyes flickering between her and Raijin. “You want me to leave you alone with him.”
“She’s not alone.”
“I have Vergil.”
“But…” Dante sighed. “Come on, Nico. Let’s get you to safety.” Vergil was grateful when she didn’t argue, slamming her door closed while Dante summoned his bike. “Good luck,” He said as Nico climbed on. “Don’t make me regret this.” He hopped on his bike and the two were gone faster than Vergil could blink.
“We won’t,” Roxy said hollowly, her grip tightening on her bow. Vergil could feel her thoughts attempting to seep into his own, but she was either expertly holding it back, or it was, once again, too jumbled for him to make any sense of. “Right, Raijin?”
The man shrugged. “That depends on you, Roxanna. I have my orders.”
“It’s Roxy,” She said simply.
“I never called you that,” He said. “Drove you crazy, though you never did admit it.”
“We were friends.”
“We were nothing of the sort.”
“Then why haven’t you killed me?”
Vergil tensed, eyes locked on Raijin. He was confident he could defend her, though he wasn’t quite sure what they would do if he transformed. But Raijin made no effort to do so, nor did he move from his spot against the van. “I hated you,” Raijin said. “For stealing my brother away.”
“I’m not the one who killed him.”
“You might as well have,” Raijin said, his voice bitter. “If he were here… if he were with me…”
“He’s not,” Roxy snapped. “You made sure of that.”
“I did what I was told!” Raijin said. “I always…” His hand moved to his head, grunting. “I always…” His scales began to glow, even through his clothing. He stumbled back a few steps, leaning on the van for support. Breaths turned ragged. Eyes turned to slits, glowing a dark purple. Lightning crackled on his hands, and Vergil wondered if they should have let Dante kill him in the first place.
“There’s a way out of this,” Roxy said. “I can help you.”
“Enough!” When Raijin spoke, lightning slammed down around him. Both Roxy and Vergil jumped back, avoiding a strike. But Vergil didn’t think Raijin was really aiming. Losing it, maybe. But not trying to kill them. Not yet.
Finally, he looked up, his expression filled with hatred. “You can’t even help yourself.”

Casturbatus Interruptus by gaugbrojotr E | 6k | Canon!verse, Hot, , PWP
post-9.01, in a slight AU wherein Cas comes to live with the Winchesters at the Bunker. Written before 9.03. Crossposting from Tumblr. Written for a prompt from hightopsandsharpies: "Okay, so Cas is a virgin, and has no idea what pleasure is and Dean decides to show him and Cas gets all cuddly and needy afterwards. Dean walks in on Cas masturbating. He’s doing it all wrong, but when you’re a bazillion-year-old virgin, that’s to be expected. Dean decides to lend him a hand in a totally platonic, non-romantic way. Things get a little out of control.
that awkward moment when... by highermagic E | 7k | Hot, wing!Kink
All in all, with a full tank of gas and his radio turned up loud, Dean was in a pretty damn good mood. All that vanished into shock and concern when the sky lit up like daylight, as though someone had decided that black was so passé for nighttime.
This Temporary Flesh and Bone by misachan E | 5k | Canon!verse, h/c, wing!kink
Castiel doesn't serve Dean, fine, Dean has no problem with that - he just wants to know why Castiel's showing up in his dreams again.
What a fabulous little Fic. Very emotional. S4 cas is my FAVORITE.
Only Fools Rush In by baka_sensei E | 18k | Canon!verse, soulbond
Dean does something and in angelic tradition that means he's become Castiel's fiancé. Dean doesn't know if he wants to get married, but he doesn't want to let Castiel down either. Cas lets his feelings run away with him, Gabe is a total dick, Sam is concerned, and Dean has to make a choice.
Learning Curve by blualbino T | 1k | Fluff, Canon!verse
Cas has nice lips. They’re soft looking. Plush even. Dean can do this.
Dinner At Katz's by nanoochka E | 2k | Hot, canon!verse
Dean might have to teach Cas how to have a When Harry Met Sally-esque orgasm, but he certainly doesn’t have to fake it.
Free With His Hands by watermaline E | 2k | canon!verse, handprint!kink
The first time it happens, Dean chalks it up towell, he doesn’t chalk it up to anything, he’s too busy coming his brains out in his jeans with Castiel’s hand on his shoulder.
Desecrate that Sanctuary by brokentoy E | 3k | Hot, Alt!Canon Verse
Dean develops a fascination with Cas' bones.
What Once Was Sacred by saltandbyrne E | 55k | Hot, AU, Cop Dean, DJ Cas
Los Angeles detective Dean Winchester works tirelessly to atone for the sins of his father one case at a time. When his best friend Charlie drags him to visit Sam at his new job, Dean stumbles onto a bizarre string of deaths that brings him uncomfortably close to his past.Dean can't stop thinking about Castiel, an enigmatic DJ who plays the sexiest music Dean's ever heard. A chance encounter at Castiel's house reveals that Castiel is an incubus, and Dean must face the lies and the reality of his childhood as a hunter. Dean comes to see that he and Castiel have more in common than he thought, and that guilt can be the hardest thing to cast aside.
Freefall by LastKnownWriter E | 128k | Hot, Fluff, AU, Teacher Dean, Firefighter Cas
AU. The most exciting kindergarten teacher Dean Winchester's life ever gets is when he plays mechanic in his uncle Bobby's shop on the weekends. That is until a birthday party goes tequila-nova and he trips into a one-night stand with an incredibly hot firefighter named Castiel. Dean's life gets a lot more exciting after that.
The Best Years of Our Lives, My Ass ❤ by ireallyhatecornnuts E | 110k | Hot, Fluff, HS AU but not really,
AU after Season 8, episode 6, "Southern Comfort." Dean goes to sleep in a motel room in Texarkana, and he wakes up 17 years old, in his childhood bedroom in Lawrence, Kansas, 1996. He has no idea how he got there, why his parents are still alive, why his brother is an adorable freshman with no memory of his adult life, and why the only ally he has in this place is the angel he left behind in Purgatory – somehow also 17 years old. They have to get out, that's the important thing. Only, falling in love with his angel wasn't a part of the plan....
It's like a HS AU... but better! I love how Dean is given a second chance at growing up, and Cas gets to engage with his humanity is painfully familiar ways. Some homophobia from non-central characters.
deus ex nihilo by Valyria E | 7k | AU, dubcon, god cas
Lost on an uncharted island, Dean Winchester is captured by the local villagers and offered up as a sacrifice to their winged god. Castiel takes one look at Dean and decides he wants him for a mate.
Twist and Shout ❤ by gabriel E | 97k | Angst, AU, Main Character Death
What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea.
Do I really need to say anything? Twist and Shout is one of my favorites simply because it made me bawl. Didn't love the characterization, but I still liked it overall.
Carry On ❤ by TamrynEradani E | 148k | Hot, AU, Sub!dean, Dom!Cas
When Sam gets into Stanford, Dean needs a bigger paycheck than Bobby's garage can give him. Luckily, he knows a guy.
Forget 50 Shades of Grey, they should make this fic into a movie! Even if you are not a fan of Sub!Dean, give this fic a shot, because it is nearly perfect.
Glasses by Samanthapin E | 9k | Fluff, High School AU, punk!cas, nerd!dean
Teasing turns flirting turns dating turns grossly soppy boyfriends
beer and bacon happy hour by outpastthemoat G | 2k | canon!verse, s8
The problem is that Dean’s been having good ideas all night. “No one insults the trenchcoat,” Dean says, and drives his fist into the other dude’s face. Dean figures he was bound to run out of good ideas eventually.
Hard Road ❤ by aleishapotter E | 54k | Canon!verse
Dean discovers a few truths about himself when he and Cas are forced to go undercover on a hunt to the very last place Dean ever thought he'd find himself: a gay resort called "Last Hope" that is geared towards helping troubled homosexual couples repair their relationships. This fic is hilarious and hot--my favorite things.
Dean Smith Verse by TamrynEradani E | 17k | Hot, BDSM, AU, Sub!Dean
Dean Smith is a man of routine. Castiel takes him apart.
Bratishka: Little Brother by Valyria E | 33k | Cop AU, Cop Dean, Lawyer Cas
Dean thinks he knows pretty much everything there is to know about his best friend Castiel Novak - he's a smart, gorgeous DA who probably lets Dean get away with more than he should to see the bad guy locked up - but it turns out Cas is hiding some dark family secrets.
the way to a man's heart by mkhunterz M | 15k | Fluff, Canon!verse
Dean teaches Cas to cook, and other things as well.
Branded by garrisonbabe E | 12k | | canon!verse, soul bond, marking/claiming
Michael mocked Castiel, telling him he'd never get Dean the way he truly wanted. No matter the mark on Dean's soul, he'd never get him the way the archangel could take him. Dean finds a ritual that fixes that and a few other issues.
Our Bodies, Posessed by Light by obstinatrix E | 39k | canon!verse, sastiel bromance, Fluff
Purged of all his souls, Castiel is a changed being, stronger than an angel and too powerful for Jimmy's body to contain. Happily, there's an archangel's vessel on hand, and he could use fixing, too. Dean isn't too happy about the idea of his brother acting as a vessel for Castiel, and Sam can guess why, but it isn't until Castiel gets inside his head and they learn to share the vessel -- and their thoughts -- that Sam realises Cas is as in love with Dean as Dean is with him. It's unfortunate that there's nothing much to be done about it now, but Castiel will get another vessel soon. The Winchesters will make damn sure of that. In the meantime, it's up to the three of them to establish their own strange accord, and Dean realises more fully than ever that it's Castiel, and not his vessel, that he loves.
So Glad We Made It ❤by scaramouche M | 16k | Fluff, AU
At twelve years old, Dean makes a friend, who becomes his best friend, who will eventually become the love of his life.
Oh, the best friends who grow up together AU. I have a soft spot for fics like these-- comes with pining, awkward misunderstandings, and a good basis for a realistic relationship.
Shut Up (Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is) ❤ by kototyph E | 23k | Fluff, college au
Dean's done some pretty stupid things, but getting drunk-hitched in Vegas to a colleague he barely knows might just take the cake. His surprise husband, Castiel, is a little weird but likable despite that, and Dean figures they’ll go back to Boston, get a quiet annulment, and go their separate ways. Six weeks later, he’s still married to one of the strangest, most genuine and definitely most dangerously lov-- likable guys he's ever known. Dean doesn't know why or really even how it’s happening, but it’s getting harder and harder to remember that he has divorce papers to file.
FLUFF EVERYWHERE! This is definitely a feel-good fic and I love reading it when I'm sad. Or just you know, whenever.
But the Fire is So Delightful by kototyph E | 5k | Hot, hate then love, College AU
Apparently, it’s been snowing all day. [Dean is a Douchebag Fratboy with a Cherry Ass, Castiel is Angry and Aroused]
Stitches by askance T | 23k | Fluff, h/c, blindness, Canon!verse
Castiel survived Leviathan--but only barely. Vessel mauled and eyes destroyed, Cas is barely clinging to what's left of his grace when Dean finds him naked and alone on the reservoir's edge; in a panic, Dean brings him home to the cabin where he and Sam have been holed up off the grid. What follows is the slow process of the angel's recovery and the unexpected changes that come with his being blind, and in the three months this takes, their little family slowly begins to patch itself back together in forgiveness, love, and darkness.
When Charlie Met Cas by riseofthefallenone E | 25k | Fluff, canon!verse
Charlie is back in all her glory. The Winchesters have showed up on her doorstep and she’s making the best of it the only way she knows how. By being the little sister Dean never wanted and shipping the shit out of Destiel.
The Life After the Morning After by saltyfeathers T | 17k
Dean and Cas get uber drunk on their last day of University. They end up married. Neither of them seem to mind.
The Girlfriend Experience ❤ by Rageprufrock E | 15k | Hot, Canon!Verse, First time
While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him.
Classic Casturbation fic. Complete with steamy sexytimes, hilarious dialogue, and fed up and clueless Dean. Perfect.
Hands, From Which All Things Are Built by MajorEnglishEsquire T | 14k | Canon!Verse, s8
Castiel travels with the angel tablet and without the Winchesters. One day, Dean gets a text from some anonymous number. (They speak in the language of need.)
Cowboys and Real Estate Angels by almaasi E | 36k | AU
Castiel crosses paths with the ever-charming Dean Winchester at a rodeo show in Texas, of all places. Dean's singing days are long bygone, but his crowd-pleasing skills haven't waned one iota. Unexpectedly, Castiel finds himself in Dean's bedroom; they take and they give, and discover that sometimes strangers can find love like this, too. (And if a man's faith can't be put in God, it needs to go somewhere...)

The not so secret diary of Gabriel Agreste
Because I needed some crack in my life. This is a gift for @geek-fashionista who requested my joke idea become a fic.
And because writing ridiculous Gabe content cheers me up and I needed a good pick me up. (Hopefully this will get me back in the mood to finish the next chapter of Cut from the Same cloth. If nothing else it felt good to really sit down and write again.)
Anyways- enjoy.
The not so secret diary of Gabriel Agreste
(Edited and catalogued by Nathalie Sancoeur)
March 18th
So apparently driving 4 employees to a nervous breakdown in the span of 2 weeks is a problem to my board of directors. They claim it’s ‘not good for the company’. Also, apparently, backhanding one of them during the meeting for suggesting I ‘take a leave of absence to deal with the loss of your wife’ counts as assault.
To avoid charges, and more importantly a forced sabbatical, I have agreed to see a therapist. Hence this ridiculous writing exercise. Oh well. At least it is only one wasted hour a week as opposed to several months of sitting in my house, watching them drive my company into the ground with their ineptitude.
March 25th-
My therapist says that I have a problem.
Of course I have a problem! My wife is missing. Honestly, I have to pay this man?
He says that I need to be ‘focused on healing and rebuilding a new sense of normalcy instead of lashing out at the people around me.’
Well perhaps if the people around me weren’t so incompetent I wouldn’t need to lash out so much.
Nathalie- does it count as attending my therapy sessions if I send a proxy in my place? Please investigate.
March 30th-
My therapist has informed me that I am developing an obsession, and that he is concerned that the loss of my wife and my need to get her back is driving me to an unhealthy dissociative state.
Well maybe that’s why it is so important that I get her back. Did you ever think of that? Then I won’t need to waste my time adjusting to my new circumstances, because everything can just go back to the way it was. It’s really not that complicated. For someone whose job it is to ‘help me cope with my grief’ he is quite the pessimist. He keeps insisting we discuss the possibility of if she never comes back. Thank God these sessions are only an hour long, I don’t need to get charged with assault again.
April 1st-
I told my therapist that his advice was working and that I have completely seen the error of my ways.
And Nathalie says I have a terrible sense of humor.
The crushed look on his face when I pointed out the date was priceless.
Nathalie- make sure we are having fish for dinner, Adrien will appreciate the humor even if you don’t.
April 9th-
I had the portrait artist come in today so that we could replace the family portrait at the top of the staircase. I pre-selected our mourning ensembles and Adrien was miserable the whole time. The artist asked me if he should take some artistic licence with our expressions. I asked him if he valued his commission. The finished work was a perfect testament to the state of misery in this house. Hopefully this will serve as an adequate reminder to anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to attempt to inform me that ‘things are never as bad as they seem.’
My therapist says this is yet another sign of my increased megalomania. I think that it isn’t my fault that more people don’t have the resources to afford appropriate decor for their homes based on the emotional environment. Given what I am having to pay out for these worthless sessions I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a half dozen portraits of his own scattered around some poorly decorated eyesore he calls a home.
Nathalie- please arrange for some new backlighting for the updated portrait. Either some cool blue tones or perhaps some purple.
April 14th-
Today my therapy session consisted of discussing my childhood. On the bright side I sketched out two new designs while I tuned out his prattle.
Nathalie- you owe me 20 Euro. I told you it would take less than a month for him to try the Freudian approach.
April 21st-
Yesterday was the runway launch of the new Spring line. Not some of my best work to be honest but still a far sight better than anything else released this season. Maybe the Italians will give me some competition this year at least.
One of the reporters asked if the line was being dedicated to my ‘late wife’. I ask him if he was going to dedicate this interview to his soon to be late career?
Of course Adrien heard the whole thing and has been in a mood ever since, although he didn’t let it affect his performance. Even as a child, he is more professional than a fair percentage of my staff. I am prodigiously proud of him. Now if only he would stop being so emotional. It isn’t good for him. He spent the entire morning and afternoon holed up in his room listening to angst ridden J-pop and ordering mint fudge ice cream from the kitchen staff.
My therapist says that I need to be making an effort to empathize with his grief instead of fixating on my own, and compensate more in my new role as a single parent.
Clearly the stress of this show has addled my brain because I stupidly attempted to follow his advice.
After a pre-scheduled family dinner I patted Adrien on the shoulder and told him that I promises that things will get better.
He stared at me for a few seconds like I had grown a second head, before hugging onto me like a barnacle and bursting into tears.
Wonderful.
I managed to send my own child into hysterics.
This is the sort of disaster that comes from listening to the advice of idiots.
April 22nd-
Adrien seems to have recovered from last night’s meltdown rather admirably. Thank God children bounce back from these sorts of setbacks. I am glad to see that my poor judgement in following my therapist's advice doesn’t seem to have caused any permanent damage. Now I can go back to the important business of figuring out how to bring his mother back instead of wasting everyone’s time with pointless platitudes. Really that is the much smarter approach.
It’s like I tell my employees- if you just fix the mistake you won’t have to spend your energy explaining why it was there in the first place. No one will care how many failures you went through to get there- all that matters is the end result.
Speaking of failures, what was I thinking when I chose the dining room furniture? It’s hideous.
Nathalie- remind me to set aside time to purchase a new dining set.
April 30th-
She has been gone for exactly 100 days.
May 9th-
Today is my 20th Wedding anniversary.
It was storming today. My therapist asked me how that made me feel.
I told him- wet.
I don’t think he appreciated my answer.
May 12th-
I have fired my therapist.
No the answer to my problems is not to ‘move on and accept my loss and just be grateful for each new day.’ What sort of idiotic attitude is that? If I approached my life according to the advice of this degenerate I would be designing pink sequins party dresses for some mass produced tween fashion label. Even worse, the toad-faced troll had the audacity to suggest that I should consider arranging for Adrien to have his own therapy sessions. As if my child needs any sort of support from a second rate psychoanalyst with delusions of grandeur.
Good riddance. Besides, 2 months of this charade should be more than enough to satisfy the board.
Nathalie- make arrangement for a private investigator to look into his business. Perhaps we can do the world a favor and get his licence revoked.
May 14th-
I have decided to keep this diary. I find writing about the stupidity of others quite therapeutic.
Nathalie please find a more appropriately color coordinated journal in which to properly transcribe my entries.
May 17th-
I have hired a bodyguard for Adrien. He keeps trying to sneak out, and I can’t keep losing Nathalie for hours at a time while she chases him down. I don’t understand why he is so desperate to go out and meet other people. Hasn’t he figured out by now that very few people are actually worth meeting? Clearly the stress of losing his mother is clouding his judgement. I’ll arrange for Nathalie to get a few more of those arcade machines he enjoys so much to be shipped in. Hopefully that will help keep him distracted.
Meanwhile, perhaps I should up his modeling engagements. After all, throwing oneself into one's work does provide some temporary solace. It’s certainly the best plan I have come up with so far.
May 22nd-
Adrien’s new Bodyguard has caught him attempting to sneak out twice. Both times he sent me a text informing me that the incident had been taken care of and requesting an appropriate stipend for the installation of new security cameras.
This is clearly the best hiring decision I have made in years.
Adrien may be the closest thing to perfection in this world but alas, children will be children, so I am glad I have some competent staff to manage him until he grows out of it. I believe this teenaged need to rebel in light of our recent family tragedy is what the media refers to as ‘Emo’. I will make some calls to the main office to have more of our black pieces added to his wardrobe. And my ex therapist said I ‘wasn’t paying attention to my sons needs.’ Ha.
June 3rd-
Still no progress in my plan. This morning I woke up from a dream and I couldn’t remember if that is what my wifes laugh actually sounded like.
I can’t live like this. I won’t live like this.
June 5th-
Nathalie I will take dinner in my office. Also I am not to be disturbed for the rest of the weekend.
June 10th-
Feeling infinitely better today.
It has been uncovered that my recently disgraced ex-therapist was having an affair, and with a former patient no less! Clearly he was taking out his own frustrations with his own failed marriage out on me.
Unlike that hypocritical cow, I will preserve my family no matter what impediments I may face. I knew I was right all along. Still, it’s nice to have outside validation.
Nathalie- be sure to send a sizable bonus to the private investigator, as well as a nice fruit basket.
June 17th-
Adrien had a piano recital today. It was exceptional of course. I do wish he had chosen something other than Chopin. Really, is this emo phase going to carry over into everything he does?
I will have to send a message to his bodyguard to start monitoring his packages for hair dye.
Apparently he didn’t approve of me leaving as soon as his piece was over. I don’t see why. It’s not like I have any interest in the other performers and I already paid my admission so it’s no loss to the institution. Children can be so demanding.
Nathalie- make a note, the next time I am required to attend one of these functions make sure I have a tablet with me.
June 23rd-
Why have I still not replaced that dining room table?
July 2nd-
On the plane to London because apparently the instructions “just recreate the exact same show we did a month ago” are too complicated for my employees.
I am doubly glad that I hired a bodyguard for Adrien since he is ill and will not be joining us on this trip.
Hopefully I shouldn’t be gone more than a day or so.
July 6th-
Still in London. Apparently I underestimated just how moronic people can be. I miss my wife. She always knew how to get people to do what I needed them to do with causing them to burst into tears.
She also would have appreciated my puns.
Once I get her home I swear I am going to reward myself with an entire month of not having to speak to anyone whose surname isn’t Agreste.
Except for Nathalie, of course.
July 10th-
Finally home. Adrien has made a full recovery.
He spent all of dinner expounding on the merits of something called ‘MOBA’s. I’ve found it best to just nod and pretend like I understand what he is talking about when he goes on these tangents.
Nathalie- please get me the definition for the term Noob.
July 15th-
I am truly at my wits end. Between my lack of progress on my search for my wife and my constant set backs at the company I am for all intents and purposes trying to go up a creek without a paddle.
Nathalie is less than thrilled with me at the moment as I have taken to locking myself in the office with my cellphone and computer turned off. She doesn’t seem to appreciate having to slide notes under the door.
July 22nd-
Nathalie Sancoeur is the only person to whom I am not related by blood or marriage whom I would make an effort to save during a zombie apocalypse. (Adrien’s current favorite pastime is discussing how he would react to various ridiculous survival scenarios with his bodyguard, or more accurately at his bodyguard.)
She suggested that given my frustrations with some of my staff perhaps some personnel changes were in order.
There is nothing quite so satisfying as telling a worthless employee that they should pack up their desk and go.
I am quite confident that none of the individuals fired today would survive a zombie apocalypse.
Nathalie- please give yourself a 2% raise. It might come in handy for purchasing supplies when we are under siege by an army of the undead.
July 28th-
Adrien had his friend Mllm Bourgeois over again today. He has asked if he can be allowed to attend public school with her this term.
I told him that if Miss Bourgeois is an example of the merits of a public school education I would sooner be tarred and feathered than let him within 50 feet of said institution.
He seems to believe that going to school would allow him the opportunity to make new friends- so I suppose I can at least see the appeal. Though, after observing his interactions today I am amazed he doesn’t simply swear off friendship altogether.
Nathalie- look into putting together some sort of dossier of suitable young people with whom Adrien could potentially associate. Perhaps we can arrange to have some on call for social engagements in the future.
July 29th-
Adrien is not speaking to me today. He has locked himself in his room. Why is everyone in this family so sensitive?
Apparently ‘you can’t just buy friends.’
Clearly he has never been involved in politics.
August 2nd-
Adrien is still angry at me. Fine, if he wants to get into a petty game of who can ignore the other longer I will play his game. He’ll learn that no one beats me when it comes to the silent treatment, just like his mother did. The most she ever made it was 3 days. We will see if Adrien fairs any better.
August 3rd-
Upon further reflection, at the end of those three days I ended up with a broken nose when my wife punched me in the face. Perhaps I should rethink my strategy.
Nathalie- schedule a family meeting to discuss Adrien’s grievances. Tell him it will save time if he prepares a list of his complaints and proposed solutions for me to consult before the start of the negotiations.
August 6th-
Adrien is visiting with his friend Mllm Bourgeois so I am taking the opportunity to go through and organize my wife’s belongings. (The staff has been forbidden from disturbing anything but it is starting to get a bit dusty.) It is best to do this while Adrien is gone as I don’t know if I can tolerate another weekend of melancholy foreign ballads blasting from his room. Or worse that new Jagged Stone album I was foolish enough to order for him as a reward for winning his last fencing competition. I swear that man sounds like a beached whale screaming its way through a slow and agonizing death. I don’t know what Adrien sees to admire in it.
At least his attempted breakouts seem to have come to a temporary halt. Either the efforts of his bodyguard have finally tempered his resolve or he is secretly plotting some sort of elaborate scheme and is trying to lure us into a false sense of security.
I guess we will see how much he takes after me.
Nathalie- make sure all of Adrien’s electronic devices are equipped with GPS tracking.
August 8th-
Still slowly working my way through the cleaning process. The latest edition of some video fighting game arrived for Adrien so he has been conveniently occupied by that. It’s getting harder to face him knowing that I am still no closer to having an answer as to how to get his mother back, not that he asks. He has always been far too kind for his own good.
Still, it is a parent’s job to do what is ultimately best for their children and for the first time in my life I find myself spectacularly failing.
No matter how many hours I spend locked in my office I am still no closer to a concrete plan.
At least Adrien has stopped trying to accompany when I am in there. It’s too hard enough coping with my own failure without my son having to bare witness.
I will figure out a way. I did not get where I am today without being willing to fight for what I want. And once I am successful all of this will just seem like a bad dream. Both for me and for my son.
August 9th-
I never realized just how much of a hoarder my wife was until I took on this project. How many souvenirs does one woman need?
There is an entire suitcase from our last trip to Tibet that she didn’t even bother to unpack.
I’ll take care of it tomorrow.
Nathalie- reschedule my lunch with the mayor. Until after the election if at all possible. 4 months isn’t an unreasonable delay for a man with my obligations.
August 10th-
It seems that there is some truth to the concept that one should actually OPEN the boxes one acquires. I now have in my possession a strange magical creature named Nooroo who seems optimistic in his belief that he can help me in my quest to restore my family. It seems I will have the chance to turn into some sort of super powered empath with the ability to grant powers to others to help combat the forces of evil in this world. Seems like a rather dubious power. Most people are insufferably dim and couldn’t be trusted with a butter knife much less magical enhancements. Still, it is the first positive news in months. I tried opening the other box with the peacock pin but after 10 seconds of the creature crying upon being awakened I have decided to simply return it to dormant and lock it in the safe. Perhaps it will be useful later but for now one miraculous should be more than sufficient.
Nathalie- In light of my new associate we will need a few changes to the house. Additional security, new curtains, as well as some additions to the kitchen inventory. I will upload a list to your PDA.
August 12th-
And Everyone told me I would never have a use for a secret lair. Well I showed them. I have asked Nathalie to arrange for a large shipment of butterflies to be installed for ambiance. I have also brought in a private contractor to hide the control panel. The last thing I want in for Adrien to stumble upon any of this and get the idea to become some sort of hero vigilante. Honestly I don’t know where that boy gets his ridiculous flair for the dramatic. It must be from his mother. Meanwhile I have decided to keep Nooroo dormant for a little while. He keeps wanting me to talk to him about my feelings. If I wanted to do that I wouldn’t have fired my therapist.
August 20th-
Lair is finally ready to go. I realize though that perhaps I should read the instruction manual that came with the miraculous before I attempt to utilize unpredictable magical powers.
Nathalie- please arrange for a large pot of coffee and my favorite armchair to be placed in the lair this afternoon.
August 30th-
Apparently translating ancient codes with no resources or starting point whatsoever is, in fact rather difficult. I supposed I should ask Nooroo for assistance.

Christmas With Friends
Jesse's been through a lot, over time, as much as her world and several others.
There's no denying that and very little use in ever trying, and it's unfortunately the price of being a hero to so many for so much.
There are absolutely days when she wishes for nothing more than for things to go back to how they once were, back when everything was simple and there weren't scars to heal and wounds to fix.
With all the struggles and hardships though, she also won't deny that having more people over for the holidays is a definite bonus.
Because with every fight and every problem, she and the others met new people and made easily as many friends as they have enemies. They've gone up against monsters beyond comprehension, elements and parts of nature people were likely never meant to see or try to survive, like a sadistic world made of lava and fire, and people with otherworldly abilities and straight-up deities.
And each and every one they survived.
Having managed to help and save one of the deities that was giving them the most trouble, managing to be his friend, is admittedly a point of pride for Jesse. Everyone should get a second chance, but it's not like her affection is halfhearted or for show. She enjoys her friends, each and every one, and she goes through everything she normally does and everything she prays she'll never have to again for them.
After the first time, Jesse refuses to lose anyone else. She may have so many friends, but that doesn't mean any are replaceable or would hurt any less to lose.
And because they're cherished, Jesse thinks she might be in paradise with the sheer fun they've all been having today. They all could, in some way, use a break, from Petra returning home at least for a temporary holiday break after a few months adventuring and a few scanter letters than anyone would like to Jack and Nurm having closed up shop to spend the day with them to even Romeo and Xara staying with the Order for a week to enjoy a much needed break from all the work they've been doing in their world and the Order's world.
(Xara's gotten better, slowly but surely, at enjoying things, and even if she's undoubtedly dry and maybe just a little snippy sometimes, it's nice to see her smiling and happy.)
Jesse isn't as good an influence as she would hope, having apparently rubbed off Radar in the worst overworking of ways, but even he's been convinced to enjoy a few days to relax, and to top it off with Lukas, who's been living at the Order Hall again, and Axel and Olivia coming to visit, well... she can't really complain.
Even and especially if it means there are hours spent doing nothing but celebrating, from as soon as golden sunlight creeps over the horizon and makes the snow glitter and glisten to long after noon when everyone has snow in places they never expected and with the good kind of sore and aching muscles as they trudge back inside for hot chocolate and cookies.
After the ravenous munching of their sweets and enjoyed drinks, however, everyone's left feeling pretty cozy as conversation and lighthearted ribbing dies down
What they all could use, everyone seems to decide at once in the exhausted and silent way only happy but drained friends can, that they need to rest before they throw themselves into whatever else they end up doing or whoever else they end up welcoming tonight.
And they all pile onto the large and miraculously not overtaxed couch in the living room, watching the fire as the last of the hot chocolate and tea is drunk. It's nice from the start, but after a few minutes of occasional nudging and shifting and moving, everyone's found their warm, cuddly place to rest or doze or sleep and it's even nicer somehow.
So it figures, it really does just figure, that once everyone's done settling down and they're all nice and happy, a knocking comes from down the hall, easily louder than the soft cracks and pops of the firewood and unmistakably from the entrance.
So much for a little rest before more guests show up.
Doing a quick mental headcount, both of people who are already here and those who they know won't be coming by today (like Em and Nell, who are spending today together back in Nell's world, or Slab, who's busy running a limited celebratory edition of the improved and updated Games, or Stacy and Stampy, who, last Jesse heard, were both busy celebrating their latest ever high in sales with their friends, and Stella was already here for a few days and won't be back until tomorrow at the earliest in order to make sure Champion City's celebrations will go well), Jesse realizes what she probably should have earlier and probably tried but failed to keep in mind, which is that it's definitely Ivor, Harper, and whatever other members of the old Order that could make it.
(On one hand, Axel's already here, to her right and between Lukas and Petra, as well as being used as a pillow by both, but it's not like Magnus couldn't just up and leave. The general chaos of Boom Town doesn't really require more than a few conveniently placed and scattered fireworks to make festively explosive.)
There's a pause and then another knock, followed by some rattling of the handle that's hardly light but certainly loud, likely just for the purpose of reminding them of what they already know: the door's locked, and heavily.
A day off from the rest of the world, excepting serious matters, means the press wouldn't be able to get past the gate while people like Ivor would, but the door itself managed to get locked somewhere between the snowball fight and the sled races and it just figures that no one managed to unlock it in all the weary time they've had since then.
This pause doesn't last long, each of them glancing at each other, before Petra grumbles as she sinks more into Axel and the couch corner, wiry smile tugging at her lips.
"Somebody's going to have to get up to get the door."
Despite her own best efforts and her own disgruntlement, Jesse can't quite stifle her giggles at the resulting groans and simultaneous shifting.

Love me like you do (Part 19)-Balem series
A/N: Here we goooo! Part 19! Can you guys believe it’ll be part 20 next update?! Omg…this was supposed to be a 5-10 part series 😂 Well, whatever…I enjoy prolonging the feels. Hope y'all do too. Please enjoy! I know next to nothing of space, and since it’s just a fanfic and not a scientific paper, spare me the lecture on Jupiter’s weather lol
MOOD MUSIC: Lust for life by Lana Del Rey
***
Trying to find an empty place to keep to yourself proved harder than you originally planned. The servant quarters were quiet enough, minus the many people coming in and out throughout the day. And even with the door closed you could clearly hear the gossip going on in the halls. You even lost count on the number of times your name flew passed their loose lips. It was bothersome to listen to, but you always tried your best to remain the bigger person. In this instance, that meant getting up and wondering the endless halls of Balem’s palace just to get away from them all.
You found yourself lost rather instantly, this place quickly becoming a maze for you. None of it made sense, and even trying to find something familiar was hard. It dawned on you how little you knew of this planet and all its surrounding cities. Balem was usually by your side you didn’t feel the need to explore or learn any of it. You supposed, in the back of your mind you saw all of this as temporary. Little chance of that now.
“Gardens?” You chewed on the inside of your cheek, looking at the golden plaque sign that adorned the black marbled wall. There was two large glass doors that led outside, and from your current position you could only see trees and grass. You guessed it was Balem’s idea of a garden, which likely meant it would’ve been the equivalent of a park on earth. He truly didn’t spare no expense in his life. But, with no one around it seemed the best choice for you. With slight reluctance, you looked around before sneaking through the door and making your way outside.
The breeze was instantly refreshing for you, a nice chill to the air you hadn’t really expected. But, the view was something that left you breathless. From the inside, it looked like a forest, perhaps even a meadow. However, up close it looked like something straight out of a fairy tale. The grass expanded around his palace, at least as far as you could make out. But, the flowers and ponds decorated this area so beautifully it was breathtaking. It could easily rival Kalique’s home, with the gorgeous waterfalls and red plants. Unlike hers though, this one somehow felt more serene to you. As if it was a little piece of home to be cherished. And for once in your time here, it felt like true peace.
You walked deeper into the path, holding your hand out as the bushes brushed along your fingertips. They were lovely shades of greens, oranges and colors you couldn’t even begin to describe. And each flower that bloomed along their tops was stunning. None of them looked familiar, save for the few that resembled roses. But, you had never seen anything like this before and it was already becoming your favorite part of this planet.
With a contented sigh, you eased between two shrubs, coming upon a large pond and fountain. You took a seat atop the rock on the edge, leaning back as you closed your eyes and enjoyed the breeze. You removed your boots, dipping your feet into the cold water. It was like heaven for you, just the sounds of the local fauna and trees swaying in the wind. It was the first time you had truly felt relaxed since being here. Unfortunately, not all things get to last. Especially amongst Balem’s numerous workers and advisors. No matter where you went, you figured they’d always find you. As was the case with Mr. Night.
“Go away.” It was nearly pleading, your body growing slack as you felt his gaze upon your back. You didn’t even need to turn to see his judgmental expression, because you already guessed that your new attire would throw him for a loop. Just imagining Balem’s expression was humorous enough.
“I was sent to retrieve you for lord Balem. So, if you wouldn’t mind.”
Mr. Night held one arm out, gesturing back towards the entrance in a means for you to follow him. But, right now you had no interest in seeing him or Balem. You were still feeling rather lost about the entire thing, and at this time you didn’t think your heart could take anymore hardships for the day. Unfortunately, Balem was not an understanding man, and you knew Mr. Night would do whatever it takes to keep his master in good spirits. Even if it meant dragging you away by force.
“I very much mind.” You shot him a less than gracious look, trying to convey how annoyed you were with him and his lord. Not everything in life had to revolve around them, but you doubted they’d ever see it that way. “What does he want anyway? Last time I saw him he was screaming for me to leave.”
None of this was his advisor’s business, but it felt good to vent it out to someone. Even if that someone was a splice who likely detested you for whatever reason. Perhaps that’s why you trusted him though. Mr. Night didn’t play games with Balem’s moods, so your negativity wasn’t likely to fall upon the entitled’s ears anytime soon.
“I believe he wishes to have dinner with you.”
The splice craned his neck towards you, trying to gain your full attention so that he could complete his simple task. But, you weren’t having it today. If that’s truly what Balem wanted, he could wait forever on you. It was maddening how he believed himself so powerful that one fancy meal would make all this go away.
“Dinner?” You scoffed in disbelief, giving a cynical smile as you turned back to the wonderful view before you. “I have no interest in joining him.”
“This wasn’t a request.”
“Nothing ever is with him. Now go away!”
Every second that ticked by made you more frustrated, and as much as you disliked Mr. Night you didn’t intend to be rude to the splice. He was only doing his job, the downside was that his job was simply helping Balem.
“I see the standard Abrasax temper has rubbed off on you.” He said with contempt, moving his hands behind his back.
You couldn’t blame him for that comment, your anger was misplaced. But, would it kill Balem and all the others to leave you be for even an hour. Apparently, that was far too much to wish for here. The power of these people, they seriously earned the description of entitled.
“All this time…” You scoffed, shaking your head as you began to think back on all your decisions here. Life had certainly not turned out like you planned or even expected. If someone long ago told you you’d end up mistress to the ruler of Jupiter and earth, well, that wouldn’t have gone over so well. But, here you sat, amongst the lovely gardens of Balem’s alcazar as if it was a normal habit of yours. Somewhere along the lines of being abducted you grew to just accept all this. It wasn’t easy, that much was sure, but you felt like maybe it was just the easier thing to do. Accept it, and learn to like it. Because, the more you marinated on the questions the more it grew to make you nervous. Besides, you always believed the world was much bigger than people thought. You just didn’t think it’d turn out quite like this. “All this time we believe the world is ruled by men and women in charge of countries. And here stands one man ruling our entire planet.”
Mr. Night kept quiet at first, hands clasped behind his back, and beady eyes set upon you. He was only mildly interested in your words, the better and smarter half of him thinking delicately on time. Because, Balem was definitely not going to be pleased if he took far too long to retrieve you. “You are just now coming to terms with this?”
His question did catch you off guard, for he hardly cared to converse with you. Much less even greet you half the time. It was only a matter of time though, he couldn’t possibly ignore you forever. Especially standing right behind you.
“No…no, of course not. It’s just-” You had to think deeply on it, because this world…that man, they had a way of changing your perspective on things. “Before I came here, before I was brought here, I thought I had a pretty good handle on the way the world works. What’s right, what’s wrong. I convinced myself that it was black and white.” There was a small pause between your words, your eyes downcast towards the water as it glided over your ankles. The fish in the pond grew near, only to skitter away when you barely moved your foot. “Now I just don’t understand anything.”
Your voice was desperate for an answer, a hint of hope that Mr. Night could somehow fix it all for you. It was pathetic really, but you didn’t care if it was him or a complete stranger. You just wanted somebody to figure this out for you. Because, the confusion you were beginning to feel was building up to the point that thinking was becoming quite the chore.
“I should hate him.” That was the problem. You should hate him, without any doubt in your body. Since the very beginning you should’ve loathed that entitled man with every fiber of your being. Black and white. That’s what it should have been. He used people, killed them, bent everyone to his will. He was tiresome, selfish, temperamental, anything negative you could possibly think of and that pretty much summed up Balem. “But, I can’t.”
“Personal crisis aside, we should not keep Lord Balem-”
“I want to hate him…”
Mr. Night sighed heavily, growing impatient with your issues. He didn’t have time to play therapist for you. Everyone on this planet had problems, but only Balem’s were of his concern. And seeing as how you were his Lord’s current predicament, he may as well try and humor you along. If only to get you to follow him back without use of force. He gritted his teeth, rolling his eyes as he tried to sound genuine towards you. “Oh?”
You laid your chin on your knees, feeling the weight of the world upon your shoulders. Or universe, in this case. You didn’t really want to hate him, that was a bit harsh for someone like you. Dislike, sure. But, hate was entirely different. As hellbent as Balem was on causing harm to billions, you didn’t wish death upon him.
“I just-”
“Can’t. Yes, I know. You’ve already…said that.” Mr. Night sucked in a frustrated breath, trying hard to maintain his composure despite his ever growing impatience with you. “But, Lord Balem is waiting on your arrival. I am sorry for your friend, it was a terrible tragedy but she is gone-” He didn’t mean it, he could care less about the serving girl. But, if his sentiments allowed you some comfort enough to get up and go, then he’d play along. “And my lord is not. So, need I remind you once more that he is waiting on-”
“He is not…” You lifted your head, brows knitting together as you replayed Night’s words over in your head. “He’s alive.”
Your words confused the advisor, and he glanced around the garden as if there might be someone else around that could make sense of all this. Instead he found the usual sounds of waterfalls and wildlife. Not to mention your crazed sounding revelations. Maybe it was time you finally snapped, the knowledge of all this eventually getting to you. But, that wasn’t the case. Mr. Night’s words just made you realize something in yourself, something that only served to further the idea that life really wasn’t so black and white. Even with you.
Nevaeh was gone, and Balem was alive. And it was only now that you comprehended why his words made you so angry. You felt for the loss of your friend, truly you did. But, when Balem said those cruel words, it wasn’t the grief of her loss that hurt you. But, rather grief for your own musings. Nevaeh was dead, and Balem still stood before you. Unharmed, and as well as anyone could be after an attempt on their life. And that was a relief to you. You were happy that he was well, that he could still stand there before you in all his confident glory like he always did. You ached for her loss, but you were more elated by his survival and that very thought disgusted you. That’s why his words cut so deep for you, because he so casually made you realize how selfish you could be. All because of him. In that moment, his life was more important to you than a ‘serving girl’ as he so nonchalantly put it on most occasions.
You closed your eyes in defeat, heart wrenching at your emotions. “Oh god…” If his advisor wasn’t here, you were positive you would’ve sank onto the ground in a ball of self pity. Everyone sought to explain your feelings for you lately, but you didn’t need them to verify anything for you. It seems you were perfectly capable of approaching that understanding on your own. It may not be love, you thought. But, it certainly couldn’t be classified as nothing anymore.
“I can’t go…”
You dropped from the rock, pulling your boots back on and attempting to get passed the splice. Only he appeared to have expected such a reaction, and with a wave of his hand two guards grabbed your arms lifting you easily from the ground and carrying you off into the alcazar.
***
“Let me go!” You fought desperately against their tight hold, heels barely scraping the ground as the doors to Balem’s chambers slid open. It was the last place you wanted to be, but no matter the fight you put up you still ended up back here. It was just like the first time you saw him. Only this time you weren’t laying at his feet. But, the guards threw you to the ground as soon as you entered the room, making you catch yourself on your hands and knees.
“Mr. Night.” Balem was sitting at his private dinner table, playing with the bottom of his wine glass once you came in. His eyes were trained on the wine sloshing around, but it was obvious he was still aware of his surroundings. “Is that really necessary?” He took a sip of his wine, his eyes moving to the side to take in the scene.
“She refused to come, my lord.” The splice bowed upon being addressed, a concerned look on his face. He knew you were particularly special to the Primary, roughing you up was the last thing he wanted. “Forgive me, but I tried every-”
“Enough.” Balem held his hand up, no longer interested in the details of the story. All he wanted was for you to be here, and seeing as how that wish was met he cared little for the rest of the reasons. “Leave us. Now.”
The guards and advisor bowed once more, exiting the room and leaving you to kneel on the ground. You didn’t want to move, because that meant seeing him. Even speaking felt difficult, as much as you wanted to yell at him for all of this harsh treatment, you simply kept your mouth shut. Not that any of this behavior was pleasing to the Primary. You could almost feel his anger in the air.
“Get up.”
Ignoring him would only make it worse, and that was something you weren’t keen on dealing with. With as little joy as possible, you rose to your feet, smoothing out your shirt and trudging along until you stood at the table. He wasn’t in any mood to play games, and just when you stood before him he looked up at you. It was the first time in hours that you saw those green eyes of his, the very ones that made you nervous and excited. Only this time there was far more to it, a feeling that was almost indescribable for you.
“Sit.”
He used his boot to push the other chair out, eyes still fixated on your sullen form. It was hard to tell what he was thinking, but his intense gaze was enough to make you believe it wasn’t positive. Emotions aside, you fell back into the chair, avoiding his glare as much as possible. It wasn’t an easy task considering how heated his stares could be, but you tried all the same.
Balem watched you, taking in your appearance as if this was his first time seeing you. You wore clothes that didn’t quite suit your beauty, something he found rather disappointing. And as much as he wanted to address your poor choice in attire, he opted for lighter conversation. Anything to regain your attention once more.
“Where were you?”
“The gardens.” You answered curtly, trying hard to keep your sights set on the elaborate table cloth. It was proving difficult though, because how could you ignore the aura of power around such a man. Every little movement of his was beckoning you to look, but in your current state you didn’t think you could handle such a thing.
“And what did you think of them?”
His attempts at polite conversation were nerve wracking, each sentence that left his lips making you curl back into your seat even more. It’s not that you didn’t enjoy the idea of them, but every part of you just wanted to take off running right now. You shifted in your seat, twiddling your thumbs as you rested your hands on the table. It was a minor distraction from him, not that it helped at all. It only made you realize how close you two were right now. His hand was only inches away, still clutching his glass as he rolled the stem of it between his fingers.
“They were beautiful.” You choked out, nerves becoming unsettled as he reached over you and grabbed some fruit from the bowl. The entire time you held your breath, heart beating madly in your chest when the very air around him swept by you. How one man caused you such excitement was disturbing, but you couldn’t let him know that. Because, no matter how you spun your words he would immediately shun your emotions. That much, you knew.
“Look at me.”
You stiffened at his demand, anxieties kicking in when you fully comprehended his words. It was only a matter of time before he realized how reluctant you were to even meet his gaze. But, that was the last thing you wanted to do. If only he knew what was racing through your mind, then he wouldn’t be asking such a thing of you. Looking into those eyes was a dangerous game to play, and if you didn’t avoid it something told you it’d be the end of you.
“My little dove.” Balem leaned over to you, eyes looking you up and down as if he was assessing your behavior. He imagined you were still angry with him, something he figured he could remedy later. But, your lack of interest in conversation was growing tiresome for him. Whatever your issues were, he had no attraction to them. He just yearned for your company, but this wasn’t it. There was a gentleness in you that was lacking, something that irked the Primary to no end. He longed for the woman who had that fire in her eyes, and right now this wasn’t you. So, he lifted his hand, gripping your chin gently and turning you to look at him. And just as your eyes met, the doors slid open, a single servant waltzing in with dinner. A true heaven-sent for you.
It offered a momentary distraction for Balem, and he sighed as he let you go and waved the girl on over. But, you hadn’t moved. Instead you found yourself staring at him, and in that moment it was like a crushing blow to your heart. Everything you tried to avoid was now before your eyes, and nothing was going to save you from it. All you knew, was that you had to get away and quickly. Because, staying here and dealing with your conflicting feelings for him would only hurt.
“I-” The words wouldn’t come out, your resolve slowly falling to pieces the more you took him in. It was true, you admitted to yourself. True, that his well being meant something to you now and having him perfectly fine in front of you made you elated. Yet, the reasoning behind that revelation was nothing that brought you joy. Only pain led down that road, and it wasn’t something you were eager to put up with. So, with all the courage you could muster you begged him for your release. Not only from this planet, but from the potential heartache of his rejections. “I want to go back to earth. Please…”
The servant was moving closer, tray in hand as she made to lay it on the table. But, you had chosen a poor time to convey your desires to him. Your words immediately took him by surprise, his eyes narrowing into threatening slits when he made to look at you again. This time you held his gaze, faltering only when he yelled his displeasure at the servant.
“Get out.”
She looked confused, barely able to place the tray down as he ordered her away. “My lord?”
“GET OUT!!!”
His voice made you both flinch, the serving girl taking the food and practically sprinting from his chambers. You, on the other hand, stayed put in your seat, meeting his icy glare.
“Balem-”
He slammed his wine glass onto the table top, cracking the edges of it as he seethed with rage. You had never seen him this way, not to this extent and it frightened you. Where all this anger came from, you didn’t know. But, he was not going to let you go lightly.
“You are never leaving this planet for as long as I live…”
His tone was cold, even, as if every word he said was a threat. It made you shiver in fear, eyes wide with worry as he leaned over until your noses were nearly touching.
“And I assure you, little bird-” The usual mirth in your pet name was now gone, and in its place was now a voice that sounded almost disappointed and rejected. “That could be for another thousand years.”

Fast food tier list (British edition).
So, I decided to do one of these things. I know that the whole tier list thing is entering it's ironic stage at this point, but I decided to drop in my personal thoughts from a British perspective, to spice things up compared to the usual American stuff.
D-tier:
Nando's - I don't know if this counts as fast food, but I'm gonna say it does anyway, because it's a pretty popular place to get a quick bite to eat. That is, unless you ask me. I mean, it's all right. The food is fine on it's own. It doesn't give you salmonella or anything. But it's just boring! If you want chicken, then that's exactly what you get. But that's all there really is. If you want any alternatives, then you don't have much choice. You’re only getting spicy chicken, and if that isn’t your thing, then a lot of these things aren’t really going to interest you. Not to mention that without the spice, the chicken is dry as shit, especially if it’s in a burger, and the deserts consist of little more than flavourless fro-yo and like three flavours of ice cream. The one good thing about this place though, is that you can drink as much stuff as you want from their machines, keeping you hydrated through all the dry shit!
C-tier:
Subway - I guess this is something more people are likely to agree on than my last point. Subway’s only really a place you go to for lunch if you’re either busy or trying to be healthy (though the chemicals they put in the bread don’t really help matters). I guess it’s a better choice for your health than most other places here, but we’re not hippies, so this stuff is just boring! All I really feel like getting from this place is a simple turkey and lettuce sandwich, because that’s all that really interested me (and also because I’m a fussy eater, so that might affect my opinion). Besides, the only other thing I tried there was the chicken, and you never have cold chicken, because I’m pretty sure that’s a health hazard. Though the one major upside, is that the cookies they have for dessert are just to die for! Even if they’re not that healthy.
B-tier:
Favourite Chicken - If there’s one thing that’s a key staple of British urban cuisine, it’s the chicken shop. And whilst this chain isn’t exactly as well-known as Chicken Cottage for example (a place I wanted to visit for this list, but didn’t have the time to do so), it does have many good things about it. Especially in terms of their chicken burgers, because, my God, those things are amazing! The sauce they offer allows the burger to taste heavenly, and the chicken itself is brilliant. I’ve got my fix of this stuff from their location in West Drayton (about a 5-10 minute drive from Heathrow Airport), and I recommend their burgers to anyone in the area, even if you’re just looking for something quick to eat whilst spending the night waiting for a plane, because they’re open until 11. However, in terms of downsides, I guess that much of their other chicken is kinda dry and a little too pink to ignore at times, their dessert menu is rather lacking and quality really depends on location. Whilst the burgers at West Drayton were always a treat, I’ve only been to their branch in Slough once, and when I was there, the breading felt much more flaky and for the next few days I had pinkeye. That could be my fault, but I figured I might as well say that anyway.
Burger King - Now I suppose this place isn’t very popular in America, though I guess it does seem better in an area with less competition like Britain. Me and my brothers tended to visit Burger King on our birthdays or on a special event when were a little younger than we are now. Nowadays we only really tend to visit Burger King whenever we want a change from KFC or McDonald’s. Now it’s not because I hate their stuff, far from it in fact; the variety of burgers they have are massive and the desserts, like at subway, are absolutely phenomenal, but mainly because they have a few flaws that stop them from being of the highest tier. For one, many of their sides, especially the fries, are really dull, especially when compared to it’s competitors. Another serious downside here are the conditions most of the restaurants are in. They can be pretty damn dirty in places, especially in older restaurants, like the one near Park Royal station, which could really use some renovations. The poor quality of the restaurants is rather apparent when it comes to the reliability of the ice cream machines. Like, your ice cream is incredible, especially those Kit-Kat and the (sadly) discontinued M&M’s Fusions, but that means nothing if I’m unable to eat them! Still, Burger King’s pretty damn good, though I’d probably rank it higher if they brought back the M&M’s Fusion and fixed their stuff.
A-tier:
Harry Ramsden - A place that deals in a much better-known British delicacy: Fish and chips! Though I tend to go more for sausage and chips myself, I was never once disappointed by the quality of this place, except maybe for one time when they ran out of Pepsi. Still, the food has a nice taste to it and it’s definitely a place that I love to eat from. I can’t exactly say much about this place though, because there aren’t that many branches out there, and you’re much more likely to find it in the Northern regions of England than the South. I don’t why this is the only thing the North can have over the South, but I digress.
KFC - Now KFC is generally seen as a shit-tier Popeyes in the States, but here, it’s the prime spot for roadmen to congregate, and for good reason. The chicken is much more moist and flavourful than in places like Favourite Chicken, and they have quite a few things available, considering it’s mostly just chicken. The fries have recently been upgraded, and pack much more flavour than before, especially with salt, and their dessert menu is also much larger than it really needs to be, but it still tastes fantastic nonetheless. Still though, it’s taste still isn’t really great enough for it to be featured in the S-tier.
McDonald’s - A fairly well-known choice, but still one that deserves a spot here. This place is amazing. Though it may have slightly less variety, in terms of food available, than Burger King, it makes up for it in terms of their quality. Though Big Macs do get quite a bad rap, which I can somewhat agree with, their quality lies within their temporary burgers, especially the Big Tasty, which really needs to be a year-long thing, though it might result in the extinction of cows if it was! The desserts are also pretty damn good, with them offering similar ice cream stuff to Burger King, except the machines actually work! The fries also deserve an honourable mention; their just really nice and tasty.
S-tier:
Five Guys - Whenever you visit one of their restaurants, you tend to see that Five Guys really likes to show off their positive reviews, and I’d like to say that these guys deserve every last one of them! Though it does little outside of burgers and fries, it doesn’t need to do anything else! Their burgers are some of the greatest I’ve ever tasted, especially with bacon and cheese. Not to mention the fussy eater in you will be happy to know that you’re not just stuck with a list of pre-set combinations, just a base of a burger, and maybe cheese and/or bacon. The range of drinks, soft or hard, is also massive, not to mention that they’re mainly from their fountain machines, allowing you to drink as much as you want, though I don’t think you’d want to, considering that their burgers are filling enough. The only downside is that it’s pretty expensive compared to other places on this list, but let me ensure you that it’s worth every penny!
So that’s that. I gotta admit, this list was pretty limited in terms of content. I could’ve added in places like Chicken Cottage or Wimpy (an endangered species in it’s British homeland), though it’s been tough trying to get to these places. I could probably update this if I do visit these places, but this is all I’ve got for now

in honor of my sapphic marathon, here is the “ Iris West becomes a legend, has a fling with Sara Lance, and saves herself and Barry from Savitar” fic that i abandoned forever ago.
i’ve been talking about this fic i never finished for a month (because it’s literally been a month since i wrote most of this thing). i was really mad at barry in between the episode where they Broke up and the musical episode, and i always deal with that by shipping the character’s love interest with someone else to spite them.
it evolved into more of a temporary deal than the hard and fast “iris joins the legends FOREVER” that it was when i started, but i just lost so much momentum after the musical episode fixed everything that i couldn’t fix this up to be ao3 material. hope that you guys enjoy it here.
implied atomwave because reasons
"You want to join us?" "Temporarily," Iris says, "I just need a break." "We ain't a cruise service," Mick says. "What Mr. Rory means to say is that what we do is dangerous," Rip says. "We can’t just pick up tourists, Miss West” "I'm going to die in two months at home," Iris says, "I'm not looking for a luxury vacation, I just want a break."
“A break?” Rip says, “I’m not sure that this is the place for you.”
"I want to make a difference somewhere," Iris says, "and if I can figure out how to save myself." She shrugs. Sara nods. She likes what Iris is saying. "Alright Iris," Sara says, "welcome to the Legends." "Get out of my way, dimples," Mick fucking Rory tells her. "Aw, he gave you a nickname already," Ray says, "that means he likes you." "Do not," Mick says. "Uh huh." "I don't like any of ya." "None of us, huh,” which almost sounds like Ray’s prompting a response. Mick rolls his eyes at that. "You know I like you." Then he pauses, and looks thoughtful for a second. "Sometimes," Mick says as he walks out of the room. "He likes you," Ray promises, "I'm his partner, I know these things." then he follows Mick out of the room. Iris sends Jax a confused look. "Wait, are those two-" "No one knows what those two are," Jax says, "we stopped asking months ago." That explains absolutely nothing. "Do you have any self defense experience?" "'Not much. I wanted to be a cop when I was younger," Iris says, "but my dad talked me out of it. I don't know how to defend myself, to be honest." "I mean, I'm pretty good with a gun, but without a weapon I'm useless." So Sara Lance teaches Iris self defense. Sara wishes that she'd met Iris earlier in life, when she was less fucked up and Iris was less tied down. She thinks that she could have loved her, before the League. Before Nyssa and dying and whatever the hell she felt for Snart. Iris is exactly the sort of girl she'd have fallen for back then. Iris fits right in with the legends. She takes her journalistic skills into the field and helps solve crimes with her deduction and interpersonal skills, and she writes accounts of all of their trips and gets interviews with people, normal civilians and people of historical significance. She and Nate have a blast working on the historical archives and updating them and figuring out which bits are wrong or right. "It's just frustrating, you know? I know he's just trying to protect me, but I'm not just a damsel in distress. This was bullshit back when Spider-Man did it." Sara cracks a smile. "It never works. The bad guy doesn't forget that person's important to them, and it just makes everyone unhappy." "I know," Iris says, "that's what I keep telling myself." Then her look darkens a bit. "What is it?" "It's nothing," she says in a voice that lets Sara knows it's definitely not nothing. "Iris." "It's just," Iris says, her voice losing confidence, taking on a weird half joking half nervous tons, "I just, I've been thinking that he doesn't even love me anymore." "Iris-" And one thing leads to another and they're in bed, and Iris is freaking out because does it count as cheating if you're broken up and you’re pretty sure you’ll get back together but you don’t KNOW and Sara's like we can stop if you want, we don't have to keep going but Iris kisses her and then the world falls into place. Sara eventually looks into Iris's future. She knows that Iris is avoiding it, and that she thinks she can find a solution if she avoids it long enough. Sara runs through every scenario, and they all end the same. In every version of reality, she dies. Iris West dies, and then the Flash rushes into a hapless, rage-blind fight with Savitar. He dies too, and Kid Flash takes up his mantle. Iris walks in on Sara replaying it. "Oh my god," Iris whispers. "Iris," Sara says gently. "Is that the future, right now?" Iris asks. Sara nods her head. "What if I change something?" Iris asks, "what if I came back in October or something?" "It's the same in every version, Iris, no matter what you do. No matter when you come back." "Every version?" Iris asks, voice hollow. "Yes," Sara says, "every version." "What if I never went back?" Iris suggests, frantically. "We both know you don't want that." Iris has carved herself a place with the legends, but she doesn't need it. She has family and friends and a fiancé to get back to, and that's not even mentioning her career. The rest of the legends have little to nothing to come back to, but Iris left a full life behind her. Sara won't let her give it up, no matter how much they all want her to stay. "We'll figure out something, I promise," Sara tells her. "The spear of destiny," Iris says, "do you think it could rewrite my fate?" "I don't know if that's a good idea," Sara says. "Do you have a better one?" And no, Sara doesn't. "No!" Thawne shouts, but Iris grasps the spear tighter, and feels herself floating off the ground. She opens her eyes, and sees the shocked faces of her friends. Eobard Thawne looks up at her in awed horror. "Eobard Thawne," she says, her voice taking on an echoing, other-worldly quality. "Iris West," he says, his voice cracking, "please, save me." "Why shouldn't I erase you where you stand?" "Please," he begs, "I can tell you about you and Barry's original timeline, your children, your career. I can help you defeat Savitar." Iris laughs. Like she needs Thawne's help to defeat Savitar, when she holds the power to rewrite reality in her hands. "You killed Barry's mom to spite him," Iris growls, "I should erase you and all of the damage you've done." "Iris," Rip says, "you have no idea the effects that could have on the time stream." "Remember the effects of Flashpoint," Stein says, "you felt those effects for months. Imagine what this would do." Iris can imagine what it would do, though. It would make the world a better place. God, she just wants to do it. "Iris," Sara says, "I know what it's like to take a life, to take too many lives. It sits with you. You don't want that weighing on you." Iris can feel the truth in their words, and knows that she can't erase Thawne from the time stream. "Please," Thawne says, "I'll do anything just- just save me, Iris." She's not going to erase him. That doesn't mean she has to save him. Iris holds the spear of destiny in her grubby little fingers, and rewrites history. "I'm alive," he says, full of shock. "You are," Iris says. "But I don't feel solid," he says, "I don't- I don't-" Then he spots the time wraith approaching from his left. His eyes widen. "You didn't save me," he says, and he wraps his hands around her throat. "Savitar's not around to kill you anymore," he says, squeezing a little harder, "guess I'll have to finish the job for him." She chokes, and she hears the rest of her Team scrambling for their weapons. "Drop dimples or I'll light you up-" Thawne rolls his eyes. "If you try to light me up, Rory, you'll just get her. I'll be gone in a Flash." "Speaking of Flashes, who should I kill next, Miss West, your brother or your ex?" She sputters, and he laughs. "Guess it doesn't matter, you'll be dead either way." She sees a flicker behind him, something ghostly, and she feels something bubble in her throat. "You brought this on yourself," he says, and the time wraith descends upon him. He drops her harshly to the ground, and he screams as he tries to run. But the time wraith digs it's claws into him and drags him into the void. "What just happened?" Jax asks. "Looks like dimples saved the day," Mick says, which is apparently an explanation. Sara holds out a hand and helps Iris up, letting her lean on her for support. "Yeah," she says, "she did." Iris almost doesn't want to leave. "You sure you wanna leave, dimples? Sure the Captain can treat ya better than the Flash." "Don't pressure her," Ray says, "she'll come back if she wants to." "I'll miss you too," she says, rolling her eyes. "The archives will miss you," Nate says. Amaya rolls her eyes. "He means he'll miss you. I will too." "You're the Captain, Sara," Amaya says, "it's different." "You know you'll always have a place with us, right?" Sara asks. Iris nods. She knows it, and she feels so much better knowing that.
"I won't apologize for sleeping with someone else while you were Lois Lane zoning me," she tells him. "I won't ask you to," he promises. "How do you do it?" Iris asks him. Barry sends her a confused look. "Live with the power to change history, and never do it?" "Well,” Barry says, and Iris rolls her eyes as she remembers Flashpoint.
"You just changed it once," she amends. "I only had the spear for a minute and I almost rewrote everything," she admits into his back, "and if I had it constantly, I don't know if I could help myself."
"Hey," he says, "you are the best person I know. You did the right thing, even though you didn’t want to. You probably wouldn’t have changed things the one time.” Iris doesn’t know if that’s true, but she decides to let the matter lie. It’s easier that way. "I am pretty great," she says, "the legends all said so."

I'm not trying to get 100% coverage. Its just with my husband changing jobs (he had excellent insurance) and now neither of our insurance at my work or the one at his new job will be as good as the last one. But with gas prices he had to change jobs. Thanks everyone for your help. Any other suggestions I welcome.

Best auto insurance company for young adults?
So after working hard in college and multiple internships, I am going to graduate college in three years and best of all, managed to score an incredible job with Boeing aerospace division in this toilet of an economy. I even managed to use most of my savings to buy an apartment. However, after all this, I realized I was missing a crucial thing. A car(i live far from work). I only drove in my highschool years, so I am completely oblivious when it comes to insurance rates and what not. So my questions are as follow: 1.Is it better to have an older car or newer car as far as premium amounts go? I used to fix cars with another mechanic, so im not worried about an older car breaking down. 2. I am 20 years old, in your experience, what company is the best for young adults? I have no criminal records and no accidents from my highschool years. 3. How much insurance should I buy? In other words, should i just buy coverage for the other person if i hit someone, or should I buy coverage for my own car as well? 4. Just generally, in what range should I expect to pay? Just curious, I have to get it whether I like it or not. 5. Finally, any good tips on bartering with the insurance company to get a lower premium? You dont have to answer all the questions, feel free to just answer one, any help is appreciated!""

Should iclaim through the car insurance?
My mother in law was driving my wifes car on our insurance pollicy. She was hit on the passenger side of the car and puched in to the roundabout by the cab on a 14 wheller. MY mother in law was not to blame as the lorry was in the wrong lane and there are witnesses who saw the accident. The car is a 1996 renault clio and there is some heavy denting and scratches on the passenger door and front wing. Nothing that has effected the driveability of the car to my knowledge. since the car was pushed up over the kerb and on to the roundabout it could have knocked the tracking a little. I dont know how much it will be to repair but the car is only worth about 600 and the insurance policy on this car has an excess of 350 cause it was the named driver who was driving and not my wife. There also is no protected no claims bonus. If i was to put this claim through the insurance how would this effect the pocket and the no blaims bonus.

Where can I get car hire insurance for USA?
I have been looking everywhere for car hire insurance also known as excess insurance. I can't find anywhere for a 20 year old, I'm 19 now but on our holiday I will be 20 years old. Fox car hire charge nearly $900 for the CDW and recovery fee. E-Z Rent a car will supply a car to an 18 year old but will not supply CDW. Fox have awful reviews so I didn't want to be forced to rent with them. So I figured if I got car rental insurance or excess insurance i could rent with E-Z or rent with fox but not have the CDW totalling up my bill. The annual polices for the excess insurance are around $100 I would happily pay $200 because of my age. I'm also from england not USA but would be renting in USA (Orlando to be particulate). Insurance doesn't want to fix car?
Ok, So I have insurance through UAIC. I was not aware till the research i've done they are the biggest losers in the business. Here's my issue, my car was vandalized on november 12 of this year. I have full coverage insurance. Prior to insurance, we agreed to have photos taken by the local insurance so they can note any problem.. Car clear perfect which it was. No a scratch, ding or dent showroom conidition I would say at the time. I filed the claim the same day of the 12th of November. It took them 2weeks just to come estimate the car, estimate was 1500 and let me tell you. My smallest quote was 2900$ so immediately I was a little worried about it. Well I finally got a call back today on december 13th. Telling me the insurance estimator for them said the car had prior wear and tear. Which it was absolutely not! i treat my car great and have pictures to proof it. What can I do, and I see no point in full coverage with these guys! I don't know if i should be angry, do a legal matter or just cut my losses and switch back to liberty mutual""

How can forcing people to have car insurance compare to forcing health insurance?
Actually this equates to Slavery by the government??? You do not have to buy car insurance if you do not own a car. Secondly, if your car is paid for then you only have to have liability insurance to protect others not for the repairs of your own car. Yet, forcing everyone to have health insurance would fall on every individual regardless of age, sex, race, income, ect. If you do not have enough after paying your monthly bills you will be fined and even serve prison time with a $25,000 fee. This essentially goes against Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness isn't it? Liberals want to say everyone should have, and the government should provide? Yet, this is not government providing it is government enslaving you to have?? Slippery slope they are weaving and the benefits will be far less than we have today with the government oppression on each individual.""

What is the cheapest car insurance in New York?
What is the cheapest car insurance in New York?
What can I do if my car insurance company denied my claim for inconsistency in my report?
Im going to lay down what happened and I would appreciate your opinion. It started when my 2007 gs eclipse clutch gave out the dealership close to my house wasn't a very professional looking place when it came to their shop they mistreated the cars that where there and had old rusted cars parked in their lot. So, I did not want to get it repaired there, I made a big fuss with mitsubishi but after sitting the car in my lot for 2 months I lost my job and I had to get it fixed there anyway cause of warranty issues and I needed my car to look for another job i'm a truck driver that's why it took 2 months and my car had 7000 miles on it i hardly ever used it. I noticed that after I had it back the cruise control wasn't working I didn't take it back because of the fear of something worse happening to it. My mom suggested that I get repair by my cousins husband so my mom handed me her cell phone called him and told me to bring it in the morning because he worked all day til 7pm and if i couldn't get to him to leave the key under the plant in front of the garage door (that call was on 6-24-09). I tried to get there early enough (6-25-09) but i missed him and no one was home so I placed the key under the plant and left I told the police officer that I had made a call to him after dropping the key but the phone number to reach him was on my moms cell phone. I thought I did I couldn't remember because I came back a day later for the car. After I walked home I thought id leave it there a day so he could find the problem, since he gets home at 7pm. When I got there on 6-26-09 my car wasn't there and they said they never saw it there so i called the police to see if it was towed it wasn't and the key wasn't there either, police came over and took my statement but on the report he stated that the car was stolen on 6-26-09 and the phone number I used to call to tell them I was leaving the car there was written down wrong. The insurance company said that the inconsistencies where that I did not use my cell to make a phone call on the 6-24-09 or 6-25-09 I told them that i used my mothers cell phone in the oath recorded meeting they recorded my statement a week after i reported my car stolen and i failed to tell them i used my mothers cell phone but they didn't ask and I also told them I called when I placed the key under the plant but I was confused because I had called my cousin twice on 6-24-09. I never failed to make a payment on any of my bills and i have good credit score I'm in fact almost done with my car payment. They also brought to my attention that I tried to sell the car but i have proof that i've been trying to sell my car since 2008 and there was a buyer and i have his emails that offered to buy my car with a $1000.00 profit for me. please tell me what do think i should do about this situation?""

April 14, 2018
Today was filled with ups and downs. Nothing amazing or tragic, just subtle ups and downs.
I didn't sleep very well last night and I think it was mostly related to the heat. Throughout the night it was warm but by early morning I had to throw some more blankets over me.
One of the other librarians sent me a picture yesterday of our new temporary desk setup, so it wasn't a total surprise when I got there this morning but it was a lot smaller in person. One of the weirdest things is that our chairs are really short now because we're sitting at tables. Instead of being about eye-level with patrons, now we're looking up at them. One of the nice things is that we're under a ceiling fan, but I was still kind of hot throughout the day, so the fan isn't as effective as the freezing vent that would blow down on us at the desk. But at least there's a fan, even if the sound of it lulls me to sleep. I'm interested to see how this little temporary setup evolves over the next few months, or however long it takes for our new desk to come in.
I was on desk for the first two hours and that time was spent working on my homebound lists. I lost more stuff because I apparently didn't save before I went to deal with the group over-staying their welcome in the auditorium Thursday night. Live and learn. I had a walkthrough at eleven and after that I was able to finish my lists.
My lunch was spent in the cubicle. I watched YouTube videos and parts of the Coachella livestreams. I didn't even know that was happening this weekend. But it is, and they have some good acts.
After lunch I was on desk for two hours and there were a lot of patron interactions. I dealt with the group in the auditorium that was setting up for their poetry event tomorrow. The lady in charge of it is the sister of one of our regular patrons, and she's kind of the mean version of her sister. But the kind of mean that comes with a smile, which makes it more annoying. She wanted to know why the event wasn't showing up on the digital displays, and I showered her that it was and explained why it didn't say what she wanted it to say. She didn't appreciate that but I told her I would try and fix it. She then mentioned something about putting a sign up down in the atrium and I told her that we couldn't put signs up in the atrium. She wasn't very pleased with that either, so I imagine that will come back up tomorrow.
Following that interaction, I went back to the desk and called a patron that I had been in the middle of calling when I was interrupted by the sister. Then I went in and edited the poetry event for tomorrow so it would show the name of the event on the digital signs. And to round out that first hour after lunch, I helped a couple different patrons find books and printed off tax forms for a different patron. In the second hour I filled out my timesheet and got the tech classes and drop-ins for next semester added to the events calendar. I didn't put the tech workshops on the calendar yet because I want to talk to my boss about them. They were not successful at all this semester so I don't know if it is worth the effort next semester. I'm thinking of changing what day they're on, but I also thought maybe we could do a board game night instead. We'll see what my boss thinks.
I had two hours off desk after that and I went and pulled books for homebound. Then I checked them out, updated my spreadsheets, made bookmarks using my new automated bookmark template (which worked perfectly), put the bookmarks in all the books, put the books in bags, labeled the bags, and stowed them in the closet. That least bit bled into the last hour of the day, and before I knew it, it was time to go home.
On my way home I got gas and then stopped at Sonic for dinner. I have vegetables that I want to roast but I'm going to do that tomorrow night. I thought it would be faster to pull into a stall at Sonic so I did that and hit the button. And then I sat there for a few minutes. And despite being the only person there (no one else in a stall and no one in the drive-thru), nothing happened. So I backed out and went through the drive-thru, which worked out much better because they actually acknowledged me. The guy at the window was super friendly and it wasn't in that put on sort of way. He was just a nice kid and it made me happy to see an example of a good person out in the wild. Sonic is just a stepping stone to a very successful and fulfilling life for that kid.
When I got home I ate dinner and then my night kind of got derailed after that. I was going to play CoD: WW2 but then realized that even though my thermostat was set to 67 degrees, it was only 63 degrees in the house (quite the difference from 84 degrees yesterday), and the thermostat wasn't on. That's not how the thermostat works. I ended up spending about an hour looking up what could be wrong, opening up the furnace, cleaning the heat sensor, and getting nowhere.
Then I played a little bit of CoD: WW2 while texting my Dad, until he called, and then I spent another hour or so on the phone with him trying different things. And then probably half an hour talking about random other things after we exhausted everything furnace-related and thermostat-related that we could think of. Before calling a repairman I might see if I can track down a new ignitor and see if that is the issue. Unless those cost more than a service call.
I got off the phone with my Dad after midnight and went back to my office. It is now 1:30AM and I have spent the last hour writing this and watching Post Malone perform at Coachella. He was drunk, high, and smoking cigarettes. Not the best combo for a live performance that involves singing. I'll stick with his non-live music from now on. Or at least mostly sober music. Now I'm watching Highly Suspect perform. They're only two songs in, and the lead singer performed the first song with his pants around his ankles, until a friend helped him take them all the way off during the middle of the song. Interesting. But he's still singing better than Post Malone.
