Percy de Rolo family one-shot (Pre-Briarwoods)
Percy is annoyed with his older brother
Percy couldn’t stand his older brother. Julius was pompous in a way only the first born could be, gaurenteed his success for birth. Not to mention that fact Julius was just… big. Percy couldn’t remember a time Julius hadn’t towered over him, and now he was even a little taller than their father even though he was still a teenager. He’d always been more athletic than Percy, even considering their age difference. More Charismatic too. The only thing Percy had on him was his intelligence, but it seemed like all that earned him annoyed groans from his siblings. For some reason it felt like Julius always picked on Percy in particular. He’d steal Percy’s glasses or snatch his latest project and of coarse the endless list of annoying nicknames.
The only good thing about Julius being the oldest was that he, more than anyone else, had to act proper in front of other nobles and the public. Balls and parties were one of the few times Percy was really guaranteed a break. Which worked out anyway because Percy was a bit… distracted. Not every noble brought their children along, but there had been a new girl at their festivities recently. He wasn’t sure what her name was, but she seemed to glide wherever she went and laughed louder than the others and her hair bounced when she’d turn around to grin at someone. He’d kinda like if she’d grin at him like that.
Percy was a bit lost in that train of thought when suddenly he felt someone fly past him and his vision went blurry. Dammit. Even here! Percy stumbled to his feet and hurried after the blur he knew was Julius. He was trying not to draw attention or bump into anyone. Finally he saw Julius drop something, presumably his glasses, at a nearby table. “Excuse me” he managed to whoever was at this table as he felt the familiar metal on his glasses on the table. Percy was just putting them back on when he heard something just a little too familiar. That loud laughter. “That’s alright” the girl giggled “your family seems lively. I’m Madeline” Percy cleared his throat awkwardly, hoping the heat creeping over his cheeks wasn’t too obvious. “Very nice to meet you Madeline. My name is Percival” he managed, bowing slightly like his dad taught him. “But uh, you can just call me Percy” He glanced up and caught Julius looking at him with his signature shit eating grin. Julius winked at him and Percy felt the heat spread to his neck.
….
Percy liked hanging out with Archie, even if he was always getting them both into trouble. To be honest, especially when Archie was getting them both into trouble. Archie didn’t treat him like a Noble or like a sibling. That’s really all Percy had ever been. It was a nice change of pace. They certainly didn’t seem like a natural choice for best friends. Percy really couldn’t explain it himself. There was something… magnetic about Archie. His lopsided grin and fire red hair and brash dialect. He was so full of energy and fire and sometimes Percy was just happy to be able to witness it. It was always the highlight of his day, and he was always a little bummed right after Archie left with his dad for the night. This was that time of the night, when Percy said his goodbyes and shuffled back to his room.
“Come play with us!” Percy heard from behind him. The twins. There was a decent age gap between them and while he didn’t mind playing along every now and then, he wasn’t in the mood. “Not right now okay guys? Tomorrow I promise.” Both of them made a loud whining sound in protest. “You played with Archie all day, how come you won’t play with us?” Oliver demanded. Percy rolled his eyes. “I just don’t want to.” He answered plainly, quickly running out of patience. “If you like Archie so much why don’t you marry him?” Whitney sang in a mocking tone. He heard Cassandra laugh from where she and Julius had been talking nearby.
Percy’s cheeks flushed. Normally Whitney couldn’t get to him, she wasn’t that good with her teasing attempts and he mostly dismissed it. She didn’t do it much anyway. But something about that taunt, and the way Cass laughed, made his face burn. “Shut it!” He snapped suddenly. He felt all his siblings stiffen. Percy rarely yelled. His response to teasing was usually a clever quip or roll of the eyes. A brief silence fell over them and Percy could swear he heard his heart pounding. “Whatever! You guys suck!” He yelled at them collectively and booked it back to his room.
He huffed as he dropped onto his desk chair, starting to fidget with his newest project. His anger began to dissipate slowly as he worked. Maybe he’d been too harsh. Whitney was just trying to get his attention. He hadn’t meant to yell at her. Why had that made him so angry? He heard her voice in his head again ‘if you like Archie so much, why don’t you marry him?’ It was a weak taunt. It should have been. But he couldn’t help but feel… embarrassed. Maybe a little hurt. He couldn’t put his finger on why. He was torn out of his thoughts by a knock on his door. He expected it to be his mother or father, angry he’d yelled at his little sister like that. Instead, he found Julius. “What do you want?” Percy bit out, sitting back in his chair. “What are you working on?” Julius asked, closing the door behind him. Percy raised an eyebrow. “Since when do you care?” He responded, but after a moment of silence he answered with a softer tone “it’s a clock.”
Julius hummed and tilted his head to look at it. “It’s nice, Percy” he said quietly. “You wanna know something?” Percy looked at him with a skeptical expression “I’m kind of jealous of you sometimes” that halted Percy immediately. Julius had to be messing with him. “Why?” Percy managed. Julius drummed his fingers on Percys desk. “Because you can have whatever future you want” Julius answered “You don’t have to be involved in politics or leadership, if you don’t want to. If you wanna make clocks, or anything else, you can do that” Julius paused for a moment and turned to look over Percys shelf of gadgets and parts, giving Percy a small bit of privacy. “And if you want to spend time with noble girls, or with kitchen boys, or both, you can do that too” Percy stiffened a little, feeling the blush flare on face once again. Julius didn’t pause or turn to look at him. “And I trust that you’re smart enough to know what you want, when it comes to it.” Percy let out a quiet breath and the anger drained out of him. “Thanks, Julius” he muttered “Really.”
Percy could nearly feel Julius’ smile before he turned around. “Don’t let it go to your head, four eyes” he said in his usual pompous tone and ruffled Percy’s hair aggressively before he left. Percy smiled a little at his closed door before shaking his hair back normal.
Maybe Julius wasn’t so bad. Mostly.

RIP Archie.
You died so Perc'ahlia could live, and we thank you for your sacrifice.
For real if they didn't reunite the "Old Friends" at the end with a big ol' smooch under the sun tree then we'd all have been mad.

Okay now that TLoVM made Archie Desnay into Percy’s childhood friend, I’m absolutely headcanoning him as Percy’s bi awakening/first sexual experimentation. Like, y’all saw how much he lit up when Archie was mentioned by Keeper Yennen. Y’all saw how Archie ran after him. There’s history there.

I like the changes made for The Legend of Vox Machina, but it’s very funny making Archibald Desnay a young, spitfire dwarven rebel fighter and a childhood friend of Percy’s,
Tumblr media
When in the stream he was a withered old man who acted as chancellor during the de Rolo’s rule and only worked with the rebellion as an organizer.
Tumblr media
(Fan art by Kileigh Gallagher)
I’m laughing imagining fans of the animated show watching the stream for the first time waiting for Archie to show up and this husk comes trotting out, talks to Vox Machina once, and then never returns.

TLOVM headcanon(s)
One thought about TLOVM I have for three days straight and can`t ignore anymore.
Archie clearly doesn`t care if he will stay alive or not.
And I don`t mean like "Whitestone is dangerous so we all can die at any given moment" but "I, Archibald Desnay, can die and I don`t care".
Like, the first scene we see him, he charges forward to distract the guards and to not let them arrest his people. He totally knows he himself may be arrested or killed, but he doesn`t think about it. And he totally knows that if he`s captured, the Briarwoods WILL kill him, he is the resistance leader, they won`t let him live! And yet he risks himself without second thought. Maybe he thought that they won`t kill him immediately in battle, that he`ll survive the interrogations (thanks to his dwarven toughness) and somehow will get saved. He definitely didn`t have time to calculate all this in a battle, but I think this is something Archie just knows as a fact: he can survive more things than most of his subordinates, so he can put himself at risk. And even if he dies there`s somebody (I think there should be somebody) who can replace him in command.
And. And. Then returns Percy. Who was presumed dead by the whole town for five years. And what Archie is doing after they finally met? "Creating a diversion while you get away!" When the whole point of the mission was to get this dwarf out of the dungeon! But no, he doesn`t care. Because Percy is here and Percy is important (and specifically, more important, in Archie`s eyes) and at this point it`s Percy who needs to be saved. And Archie AGAIN recklessly charges himself into the crowd of guards. He may get himself killed but he wants to ensure that Percy lives.
And from this point things become worse. In 9th episode Archie clearly tries to give the whole command to Percy: "Well, I assumed, since you`re the rightful heir...". In Percy`s presence, Archibald no more sees himself as a leader, commander, as an important figure, no, he is totally giving everything to somebody who should lead - for whom leadership is right. And if he's not important, there's no point to be careful. At this point Archie has no more reasons to be careful. Percy rejected the deal, but that definitely doesn`t stop the brave dwarf from risking his life again - I think, because he knows that he`s not alone anymore. That Percy is here and Percy will lead the people, the rebellion won`t just crumble even if its leader is dead.
(And also, I think this dynamic is true to their whole relationship - Archie and Percy may be old friends and everything, but when a tiny bit of a structure and hierarchy appears around them, Percy becomes a leader (or, maybe more accurately, Archie puts him as one). Percy is the noble heir, a ruler, he is important, he should be protected. That`s how is was in their childhood and that`s how Archibald keeps things when these two became older.)

The Legend of Vox Machina: Spark of Rebellion (1x06)
Archibald... I'm a little bit in love...
Cons:
This episode was the strongest we've had since episode three, which is no surprise since it's got all that creepy angsty goodness with Percy and the Briarwoods and all that. But I have basically the same "cons" as the other two episodes carrying through, which I'll highlight briefly:
Unfortunately the Pike stuff is where the weakness comes for me. I don't want it to be true, but it is. We see her wandering around trying to connect to the Everlight, and then when she remarks that it's not working because of Delilah, the priestess says: "No curse, no spell could sever her connection to your light..." and something like "whatever is keeping you apart, it's inside of you." And then Pike says: "You're saying... it's not a curse, it's... me?" Just... what an awful line. No offense but yikes. It's just a blunt, repetitive restating of what the priestess just said, and once again everything with the Pike subplot feels like it's treading water. I'm not sure why they've structured it this way at all. I really wish Pike had gone with them on the road to Whitestone, and maybe further character beats could have shown that she's losing her connection gradually, tying directly in with her choices and behavior... then she could peel off for her own subplot for an episode or two. But as it stands, I just don't feel like her absence from the group was earned or justified, and despite what they're telling me, the sequence of events is still: Pike's magic worked fine, then a bad guy broke her necklace, now her magic is on the fritz. That's not an interesting development. I need to understand where Pike's doubt is coming from in order to connect with why we're spending time on this.
A few script awkwardnesses, like I've brought up before. One is in the really funny door scene with Vax, Percy, and Scanlan. Everything about the scene was great, except at one point Scanlan says out lout "ugh... fucking doors!" That's the kind of small detail I'm talking about. That line could have been cut, it's implied by everything around it. I also really liked Keeper Yennen, but the line "oh, but you're not the same. Little Percival, what have you become?" was such an in-your-face statement, as was Percy's response: "I am what they made me." This is the kind of thing you can imply with a lot more subtlety and make the moment hit harder, instead of just coming out and directly saying the thing.
Honestly, though, this episode truly did kick ass, and I'd like to talk directly about that!
Pros:
I haven't paused to talk too much about the animation because I've been focusing on story and character, the area I feel more comfortable speaking to, but I'll just say that I love all the atmospheric detail in Whitestone. The dreary atmosphere, the oppressive muted tones, the giants stomping around, but how you see glimpses of them and don't ever zoom out to get the full effect... obviously the shot of the Sun Tree there at the beginning, setting an immediately bleak tone... I just think it's working so well to show how far we are into the depths, and it should feel really rewarding when they manage to eke victories out of this dreary place.
We get a number of new characters here, the most important being:
Stonefell. I like that he's something of a one-note villain, because we already know the Briarwoods are our Big Bads of the season, and we have various minions that they will need to fight their way through first. This one is a huge beefy dude who loves torture and killing, and as Percy says, "you were the one I was least looking forward to" so we know this guy isn't going to be the most groundbreaking.
And then Archibald Desnay! What a great change from the stream. It's been a while, but I recall Archie was an old man who had been a mentor/advisor to the de Rolos... and here we have him changed to a childhood friend of Percy... god, I can't help myself from shipping Percy/Archie a little bit? Probably thanks to Taliesin Jaffe's and Dominic Monaghan's amazing voice talent, I was immediately swept up in how much these two clearly care for each other. Percy's return home, so many people recognizing him, and having this connection, this affinity for someone... god, what great moments with Percy slamming against the cell and yelling for Vax to free him, and Percy supporting Archie on their escape attempt, Archie going back to cause a distraction... Archie wondering if he's dead when he sees Percy, because of course he'd think his friend was dead all this time... I loved all of it.
We also get a sense of the arc of the Whitestone story more completely, as Vox Machina somewhat unexpectedly connects with a rebellion group and realizes that one way forward from the current travesties of the Briarwoods is to stage a revolt and help the town to rise up. Percy is not there to be a leader, but maybe he might learn to be one along the way... great stuff with Keeper Yennen, played beautifully by the incomparable Gina Torres. And I liked the rebels, we got little moments to flesh them out slightly as characters, before watching most of them get cut down by Stonefell and his crew. Effective way of making things feel personal for the rest of our crew, while of course everything is already very, very personal for Percy.
I also felt like this might have been the strongest episode for comedy beats that we've gotten so far... in past episodes, so many of the jokes failed to land for me, even if they weren't awful, they just didn't grab my attention or actually make me laugh. But here, I can find several examples of funny moments that got a chuckle from me! I liked Keyleth, Scanlan, and Grog each having a different break-in plan, the silly animation showing them on the map, and then Vax deadpanning: "those are all bad plans and you should feel bad." Scanlan gets his beret, Grog's utter devastation at the empty kegs of ale, and then his reluctant sacrifice of the ale at the end as Vex does a Fluffernutter on it to kill the guards. Great stuff. Of course, the comedic highlight is the doors sequence. I loved Vax struggling, they got in the part of Scanlan hurting himself, and then Percy climbing up to the window and then falling on the other two, his delivery of "I fell out the window"... all so funny. And then of course later Vax picks the lock on Archie's cell in two seconds flat, proving that the back door thing was a fluke.
Lots of great smaller character beats to discuss. I love that Keyleth has the instinct to cut down the bodies from the Sun Tree, which is compassionate but also impractical, as Percy says when he points out that the area is clearly being watched. A great setup of the dichotomy between these two. We also have Grog and Scanlan sniping about the giants, we have Vex taking charge on planning their rescue mission and Scanlan pushing back against her but ultimately following her lead. We have Keyleth wanting to rescue the prisoners, and Vex agreeing even though she knows it makes things harder on them. It's hard for me to separate how well I already know these characters from the stream, but I do feel for the most part like they're managing to get in enough moments to establish what their individual personalities and priorities are.
Let's talk about my boy Percy, though... he gets another creepy mask moment, with another one of those epic Taliesin improv lines directly adapted, as he takes off the mask so Stonefell can see who has come to avenge the de Rolos, and then insults him by saying he's the one he was looking forward to the least. Percy gets great one-liners with his other big adversaries this season too, and I love that each one of them has been lovingly adapted for the screen, complete with freaky Percy mask and smoke and then the full on monstrous look on his face when he takes the mask off... shooting again and again when the man is clearly already dead...
And then swinging the gun on Vax when he rounds the corner, and Vax getting pissed off at him, and Percy saying "no one will stand in my way"... this kind of thing is one of my favorite aspects of the show thus far, that they're really taking the time to emphasize all sorts of different relationship dynamics. They could have swapped Vax with Vex for this scene for the inherent drama, since we know Vex/Percy's relationship is a big focus. But they left it with Vax and Percy, developing their particular friendship and the tension there, which, if they adapt certain things about the story moving forward, is going to be a pretty big aspect of these two men.
And then there's the Cassandra reveal! Hell to the yes! Percy's "I have a sister" moment was so touching, and then we immediately swing in on Cassandra and see that she is possibly working with Delilah... I love that Cassandra doesn't speak here, that the full extend of her allegiance isn't made clear to the audience. Does Sylas have her under his thrall? Is she playing double agent? Who knows! (I mean... I know, and everyone who watched Campaign One knows, but that doesn't count).
This episode made me especially curious as to how it would come across to a new viewer. I had a lot of fun with it, I felt like the things that happened at this point on the stream were represented in a new and fresh way, pushing the story forward narratively, but I wonder how it's all landing for someone who isn't eagerly awaiting certain iconic moments and lines! In any case, I'm greatly enjoying myself and can't believe I have to wait a whole week for the next part of the adventure...

The Legend of Vox Machina – Episode 6 "Percikan Pemberontakan"
Tumblr media
Ketika mereka menemukannya, Yennen memberikan pidato pasifis.
Percy mengejar Stonewell. Kami melihatnya dengan topengnya. Bayangan muncul dari senjatanya;
mereka menutupi tubuhnya.
