Trippy Isopod (Armadillidium vulgare)

Whether you call them an isopod, woodlouse, pill bug, potato bug, roly poly, or slater, these ubiquitous little arthropods are peaceful and underappreciated little creatures. As detritivores (eating decomposing plant matter), they are an essential part of the ecosystem. They make excellent pets and are easy to care for in captivity, provided their needs are met. They are highly gregarious and social, and the females have a strong maternal instinct and will actively protect their young. Their common name "pill-bug" refers to the fact that they can curl themselves up into a tight ball when threatened. Not all isopods have this ability.

I found a kind of armadillo that was about the size of a golf ball. They were very cute. There was a mom, with a clutch of newborns, and two juveniles (I assume her previous litter) that were a bit bigger than a roly poly. They seemed to be blind, and one of the babies had wandered away. I very carefully put it back with the mom.

These guys have a unique feature, nicknamed the "Hissing Isopod" when they curl up they make a noise that sounds like they're hissing.

went looking for some pods since it just rained and found this beautiful little lady! she’s gravid so hopefully there will be a bunch of cute little baby armadillos running around soon ☀️
