Rambling about aro, ace, aroace, demi Sesshōmaru

romantic attraction =/= sexual attraction, aromanticism =/= asexuality

For most people, their romantic identity matches their sexual identity (e.g. aroace, gay, straight, bi) but that doesn’t mean that they are the same. Alloromantic asexual people and aromantic allosexual people might be the best examples for this but it’s also possible to be heterosexual and panromantic.

As far as I know, alloromantic allosexual Sesshōmaru is the most common representation of him in fan works which makes sense because most people on the planet identify that way.

In regards to “proof” that Sesshōmaru might be one identity or another, in my judgement, there is none, neither in manga nor anime – not even in YH, which I do not include in this because for me, it is not canon. There are several instances where Sesshōmaru’s kind of feelings are ambiguous, especially in the case of Kagura, but none show explicitly that he feels romantic or sexual attraction to anyone. (If you disagree, feel free to let me know!)

So, in accordance with the “lack of proof on sexual and romantic attraction”, I interpret Sesshōmaru to be aroace. But this is influenced by me being ace and thinking in the pattern “asexual until proven allosexual”. Similarly, alloromantic allosexual people might think “allo/allo until proven otherwise” and see Sesshōmaru that way until he says something like “I am not interested in romance and/or sex” and that’s valid as well.

But 1) we can’t look inside his brain, heart or body and determine what he experiences

and 2) we as fans can headcanon him as whatever identity we like.

(I personally separate interpretation from headcanon for interpretation to mean “something that can be supported by the text” and for headcanon to mean “whatever someone imagines – whether supported by the text or not”.)

Interpreting or HCing Sesshōmaru as demisexual and/or demiromantic seems to be the best compromise for a lot of people, allo and aro-/ace-specs alike. Like, he ‘is’ asexual/aromantic until he forms a deep bond with someone and he then ‘becomes’ allo.

Demisexual/-romantic people, please tell me what you think of that wording because I’m not a fan of it. It reminds me of things allo people tell a-spec people, the whole “You just have to find the right person”, or of what supporters of Purity Culture want people to be like: Abstaining from sex, sexual thoughts, fantasies etc. until you marry and then having sex regularly to reproduce, pleasing your partner etc.

I’m also not fond of the wording of the common definition of demisexuality/-romanticism: “Experiencing sexual/romantic attraction after developing a strong emotional bond with someone” because it can make it seem like you automatically experience these attractions once you formed said bond when I don’t think that’s the case for most demi people.

I prefer the definition that I heard from a demi person (Christi Kerr), in the vein of “rarely experiencing sexual/romantic attraction and when you do, it’s towards someone you developed a strong emotional bond with”. [Source]

Demisexuality and -romanticism aren’t experienced in a monolithic way. Some might develop sexual/romantic attraction to every person they bond with emotionally, some might predict a possibility that they will develop attraction once they get close to a specific person and some might get close to people (with the hope/assumption that they’ll develop attraction) only to realize that they still don’t feel attraction towards them.

(As an asexual person who only experiences sexual attraction towards 1 fictional character, I’m pretty jealous of the first two groups. Like, “It’s THAT easy for you guys? GREAT. Wish that were me.” But I know that no experience is “easy”, people can still deal with unreciprocated feelings/attraction, fleeting attraction, and many other struggles.)

What worries me about people HCing Sesshomaru as demisexual/-romantic is the potential that some allo people only use that HC to fetishize/project their own fantasies onto the real identities of demisexuality/-romanticism. Like, they might accept the aro/ace parts only because he does experience attraction towards them/their OC(s)/the person(s) they’re shipping him with (and attraction is kinda a must-have in romance/smut works) and because it gives them a sense of relationship security, fewer reasons to get jealous towards people he’s interacting with.

But I have to be fair and acknowledge that people can separate fact from fiction and can see their fantasies as such. Though, I must admit, I’m pretty pessimistic about that since the spectrums of asexuality and aromanticism are not common knowledge and a lot of misconceptions are roaming about...

As per my life I will die for InuKag and Dramione BUT coming up as a close third at the moment is Sess/San. I used to be very firmly in the aro/aco Sesshomaru club but after rewatching and seeing him with Kohaku and getting a new view of Sango now that I'm a little older I actually really dig the idea of the two of them and have two different WIPs for the ship at present - one canon and one AU.

Certain people are very offended by the idea that Sesshomaru (or ANY character for that matter) could be Aro, Ace, AroAce etc.

It seems people find it difficult to understand that platonic relationships and non-sexual relationships should be in the spotlight too. It’s annoying af to see these types of relationships cast aside or worse—turned romantic or sexual just because it “has to happen because they can’t just stay in a platonic or non-sexual relationship.”

Characters can have meaningful relationships without romance or sex. Normalize that.

That big post of yours with that SessRinner implying most people who watched IY knew SessRin would end up together… Um, besides the blatant normalization of pedophilia and grooming can we also give a big YIKES at the heteronormativity of it all? There was not one interaction between Sesshomaru and Rin during the OG that could classified as anything but unambiguously platonic, putting age aside here let’s assume Rin was Sesshomaru’s age when she met and journeyed together with him but everything else about their dynamic in the OG stayed the same, so what, according to SessRinners suddenly an unrelated male and female who are simply traveling together as good friends must somehow get together in the end? Are we back to the old “men and women can’t be friends?” routine? Why were they even assuming Sesshomaru was straight, what if he was gay? Or Ace/Aro? What if Rin was a lesbian or Ace?

Sesshomaru seems more like an ace/aro person. His love resides with power, strength, and tessaiga. It's kinda hard to see him changing his opinion so drastically in such a short amount of time. So uncharacteristic of him if we compared it to his character's depiction in OG IY. He still has a long way to go and if we talked about romantic feelings, he just started to learn to open up his heart (well hello thanks to kagura, as stated in this panel) (big thanks to @mustardyellowsunshine for uploading this wonderful scan 😊).

Shitrise wants to make his character development as turning to someone that's not so cold-hearted and "can love a human", but by making him impregnated his underage ward that he's been taking care of since 7????? That's a character regression, you fkg asshole (shitrise. not you, anon. srry).

SRs will prolly say it's because he finally learned his late father's words "Have you someone to protect?" but protect can means a lot of things! Not just a lover but also to children?? Innocent people??

And Rin, ofc, GOD where to begin. There are many many many possibilities how rin's character can turned into. One of the best possibility, and my fav hc, is her training as demon slayer alongside with kohaku. Or even if she's not becoming a BAMF woman, she can at least been given a character development where it portrays her growth from a child to an adult.... They can do it, at the very least, but they don't want to, that's why I think atp we can safely assume that they purposefully created rin's character as the docile and timid wife, whose purpose in the anime is nothing but popping babies and getting rescued.

They could have gotten so much more. A better story line, a better plot, better character developments (that doesn't deviate from their original depiction in manga). But instead they got this shitshow. And their fans are celebrating it because it aligned with their small-brained mindset.

Sesshōmaru is the most obvious character in IY to interpret as ace, aro or aroace. My teenage self who didn't know they were ace yet fell for him right away because of that (and bc of his androgynous/GNC looks) and started unconsciously writing an asexual romance.

I used to ship Kagura and Sesshomaru, but then I realized Kagura and Kikyo could have been awesome feudal bisexuals who teamed up to take Naraku down, so now I don’t ship Sesskagu. Now I headcanon Ses as aro/ace with his relationship with Rin teaching him about familial and friendship love, but never did I ever see it or will I see it as romantic.If Sessrin becomes a thing I don’t know if I can support the sequel. On the other hand I really love Inukag and Mohara looks cute...

To the first half: LOL, I guess it never crossed my mind that they could team up! I think Kikyou and Kagura only interacted once or twice before, but hey, that's what fanfiction is for, so I say go for it! And message me with the result, because that sounds like a fun idea!

To the second half: Well, you know what my advice would be on the topic of watching versus not watching, but I think since the first episode has already been out for several hours now, you've probably already decided for yourself on which path you're going to take. How many times do antis have to say even if sesskagu did happen it still doesn’t change the fact that this sequel sucks. It doesn’t change the pacing of the show or how towa is still a Mary Sue character. People even said if they flip did happen they are still not going to give this sequel any time of day.

The funny thing is I’m a multi-Sesshomaru shipper. Do I like and ship Sesskagu? Yes. Do I like and ship Sesskik? Yes. Do I like and ship Sesskagukik? Yes, OT3. Do I like and ship Narsess? Yes. Do I like and ship Sesskirin? Yes. Do I also see Sesshomaru as aro/ace and without a need for a canon love interest? Yes.

Do you know what I don’t like or ship? Sesshomaru x child characters in the original manga and anime, especially not one he helped raise and still, as evidenced in Yashahime, has tremendous power and influence over.

I couldn’t have cared if Sesshomaru got with Kagura (even if Kagura is the person who makes the most sense). I just didn’t want him to get with Rin or another child character like Shiori.

This ship week will be the week before Hanyo no Yashahime season 2 premieres [the official date hasnt been announced, but in sometime the fall]. I decided to announce it now to give people a long time to prepare!
