Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know by Cyan Wings -- a brief review (no spoilers)

My Rating: ★★★★★ / 5

I went into this story fairly blind / un-spoiled as to the plot and characters and I really enjoyed it. If you like The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System I think you'll like this one. It's a pretty quick read (I read it over the course of 2½ weeks) and it also feels a bit lighter of a read -- in the sense that there's not a bunch of twists and turns or faceslapping going around. There's still narrative weight to the characters' choices but it feels more focused on the emotions of the characters than on making a dogblood drama.

I also really enjoyed the cultivation meta in this book -- there were sections where we would get insight into why the main character did a certain thing and how he belived that would / could impact the universe / world / dao.

What kind of story is Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know?

This is a story that really breaks the fourth wall and doesn't take itself too seriously. Like Cyan Wings' other stories that I've read it is really funny and the characters are fantastic. If you like transmigration novels but dislike the trope of an all-powerful manipulative "System" that keeps that transmigrator in check then try this one! The main character is NOT a transmigrator but he does gain knowledge that breaks the fourth wall and there are times when he considers the people around them as if they were characters in a novel. Several of the main characters can also be read as asexual and / or aromantic which is really nice too.

Throughout the story the main characters are growing and learning more about themselves and each other -- there's several times when a character reflects on how they had misunderstood another character or not known what was really in their hearts. This leads to the story feeling very emotional and tender as you slowly get to know the characters. This is mainly in regard to the main character and his love interest but its true for some of the supporting cast as well.

Ultimately it feels like a story of two people (who whole-heartedly trust each other with their lives) slowly opening up and allowing themselves to be vulnerable with the other. There's also a good portion of the story that talks about heart demons and how that affects one of the characters -- it becomes a plot point even. It certainly takes the main pair a lot of work but once they are finally on the same page (ha) and treat each other as equals... it's very sweet and intimate.

Who are the main characters?

Without going into details here's a little bit about our main squad:

WenRen E - Our main character. WRE is the leader of the XuanYuan demonic sect and an absolute badass. He somehow reminds me of both Yan Wushi from Thousand Autumns and Wei Wuxian from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. He is arrogant and prideful but also cares SO MUCH about the commonfolk in the world. He is absolutely ruthless when he needs to be but he has a line that he does not cross and he forbids his minions from crossing it either. There's also a lot of times where he's sussing out why or how something works a certain way and his understanding of the dao and the universe felt profound.

Yin HanJiang - Our love interest. There's a specific post I've seen that is coming to mind but I can't remember how it's phrased... YHJ is loyal to WRE and ONLY WRE. He is submissive in the way a guard dog is -- he would follow WRE's every order and do everything in his power to protect him but at the same time he would not hesitate for a moment to attack anyone he viewed as a threat to WRE. At the beginning of the story he keeps a certain distance between himself and WRE but as the plot develops that distance becomes smaller and smaller.

BaiLi QingMiao - the protagonist of the book that appears in WRE's hand which serves as the impetus for the story. WRE finds himself frustrated and confused at her actions a fair amount of time but over the course of the story she too grows up and gains a new outlook on life.

Shu YanYan - a seductress demonic cultivator. She only dual cultivates with consenting partners and uses her cleverness to manipulate people. She also seems fairly uninterested in romance -- I think she alludes to not wanting to get her heart broken but she also seems very happy as things are with her various lovers.

Qiu CongXue - hands down my favorite character in the story. I liked everyone but QCX is always speaking her mind and stirring up trouble. She has strong himbo energy and I don't want to spoil anything about her, just know that anytime she comes up it's going to be great.

One day a book suddenly appears in WenRen E's hand. This is notable because he is a very strong demonic cultivator and he didn't sense anything before the book appeared. So he looks at the book and decides to take it very seriously. He reads it. And he discovers that he is a character in a trashy romance novel, as is his most trusted subbordinate Yin HanJiang. He becomes very curious to find out if the other characters are real and if the events that happen in the book are destined to come true or if they can be changed. So he sets off and meets the protagonists of the novel and begins experimenting. Without spoiling things he is especially concerned about what happens to Yin HanJiang in the book. He also wants to know more about the novel's protagonists and their motivations.

Usually!!! Sometimes, I'll get behind by not responding for like a year though, and then I'll be like.......it's been too long.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't necessarily do angsty endings, but probably "a matter of going through" because it ends with heavily implied reconciliation that doesn't quite get actualized.

7. What the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I ALSO don't tend to do like, cookie-cutter happy endings. Usually I go for the, everything's still hard but we'll get through it together, endings. But probably, the path to peace (is paved with good intentions).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I got that one weird anon I mentioned for the Upside-Down AU, and then I got one person on one of my fics where a pizza delivery driver falls in love with a customer telling me that it was problematic because the driver has no agency. And I was like, lol this is fanfiction and I AM a delivery driver.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I've written exactly ONE unpublished smut fic for Alice Quinn from The Magicians in which her evil counterpart came through the mirror and they fucked about it. I'm thinking of doing a one-shot smut fic for the Upside-Down AU though.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Closest I've gotten is me and a friend plotting out the unholy union of I Am In Eskew and The Penumbra Podcast (Juno Steel).

Thankfully, nope!

Yeah, my most popular Naruto fanfic was translated to Russian!

Nope! I've never gotten past the fucked up world-building stage with friends. Could be fun though.

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

As an aromantic person, the platonic ships are usually more important to me. First ones that come to mind are platonic stobin, and from the Untamed, Jiang Cheng & Wei Wuxian who are brothers. Honestly, I usually get sucked into romantic pairings because I'm like, wow, sure would love to see these two interract more! And then all the fanfic is romantic, so that's what I read!!!

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Definitely my one where Jiang Cheng from The Untamed sees ghosts. If you've watched that show, you understand how this would be both hilarious and deeply fucked up.

16. What are your writing stregths?

I think I'm pretty good at little moments. Like when everyone is having a meal together etc, small, contained scenes.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Getting from point A to point B, like, how do I skip through time without if seeming weird????? So, joining sentences?

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've never done it, but I think it can serve its purpose. Unless you speak the language though, I think it can veer into offensive and clunky unless you get a translator.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

The Magicians, which broke my soul enough that I wrote a crack fic about it.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

My favorite is always my current obsession, so Upside-Down AU lol, but from what's published, it's definitely two million naturally occuring sweet things which is just a tretius on grief masquerading as a soup recipe.

My Personal Headcanon that Jiang Cheng is Asexual

*Before anyone mentions Wen Qing that's not canon, that romance was only in the untamed not in the books*

I have become fully convinced that Jiang Cheng is a asexual not interested in romantic relationships(There are asexual people who don't want romance but don't identify are somewhere on the aromantic spectrum)

My reasons for this include:

-Jiang Cheng is still single to this day, a middle aged virgin

-He probably has pressure from other people to marry and have kids so his bloodline will continue and he'll have an heir to the Jiang sect but yet still refuses.

-He went on 3 blind dates and was blacklisted by all 3 of them which makes me think he did that on purpose because ain't no way this man has such bad behavior ALL TIMES and it wasn't on purpose

-He has a list of requirements for his partner which sounds a hell of a lot like what asexual people do. They create a logical list of traits to make it seem like they know their "type" or something vague like "looks don't matter it's about personality" because asexuals lack sexual attraction. Let's be real no other valid straight person in the series has lists like these for their partners. Which either leaves bad straight person or asexual and Jiang Cheng is actually a good person as evidenced by literally the entire show soooooooo

-He probably made that collection of traits from random other women he's seen in his life and was like let me write that down.

-When they were students at Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang shared porn while Jiang Cheng did not

-When Jiang Cheng came back to Lotus Pier and Wei Wuxian mentioned something like "You took so long to come Are the Gusu Lan girls that attractive?" and Jiang Cheng scoffs and says something to the purpose of "I'm not like you"

Personality: Strict, traditional and perfectionistic. Lan Qiren believes that rules are meant to be follow (98% of the time). Most people see him as stern and unmovable, but behind all discipline lies a deeply caring heart and a curious mind. He doesn't know how to show affection in any other way than being strict, trying to keep those he cares about safe and peaceful. However, he can also hold a grudge. He's not proud of this and he tries his best not to let it cloud his judgement, but he is only human. Lan Qiren is no romantic and he actually distrust romantic love, it always leads to pain and broken hearts. It might not seem like it, but he loves teaching and he cares about his students, which he shows with strictness and discipline. If his students grow up to be rule following individuals, then peace will follow and peace equals happiness. He puts knowledge, morality and rules very high on his priority list.

Background (Brief Timeline)

During his youth, he meets Jiang Fengmian, Jin Guangshan and Wen Ruohan as they come to study at Cloud Recesses. As the Head Disciple, he was the one in charge of order and punishment. His strict and orderly personality clashed with most in that year's class.

Later on, as he joins Jiang Fengmian, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren on a night hunt, his adherance to the rules almost kills Fengmian and Changze. Lan Qiren takes it upon himself to make sure both men gets the best medical attention, though that doesn't stop Cangse Sanren to shave off his beard (a feature he is very proud of since he's still a junior, but can already grow a beard).

At 20, his father dies from injuries and his mother later wastes away out of grief and follows him within a year. His older brother becomes Sect Leader.

At 22, Qingheng-Jun marries Lan-furen and goes into seclusion, leaving Qiren to lead the sect in everything but name. This leaves him feeling deeply betrayed.

When he's 23, Lan Huan is born and he smiles for the first time in a year. He will protect this child.

Two years later, when Qiren is 25, Lan Zhan is born and he swears once again to protect the boys.

At 40, he's already Tired™ and it doesn't get better as that years students, or rather one of them (Wei Wuxian!), are exceptionally stressful and unruly.

42-43 - Sunshot Campaign

When he's 47, he's among those who believes Wei Wuxian needs to be stopped permanently.

1. name a drama and I’ll pick my favourite scene in that drama:

Kieta Hatsukoi - I'll go with the scene on the swing set (apparently I have a thing for scenes on swing sets?) where Aoki and his friend Hashimoto realize that they don't actually have a crush on the same person. I just thought it was very cute how they had resignedly agreed that they were love rivals and then when they finally said the names of crushes out loud they figured out that the eraser had erased part of the name. It was funny and cute and a good depiction of a sweet friendship.

In my drafts there's a gif of the scene where Aoki spill juice on Ida; that one is also very cute, so maybe this is a good excuse to post it. Honestly, while I enjoyed Kieta Hatsukoi a lot, the details didn't really stick in my mind. Perhaps if I rewatched a different scene would stand out.

Theory of Love - There's a scene in a train station in episode 11. I don't want to give spoilers so I won't say more, but... yeah.

9. name a drama and I’ll pick my favourite character oh, these two are both hard ones. I could have so many favorites from each, for so many different reasons. 

Cherry Magic - ok. I've decided I'm going to use this opportunity to go on a mini version of my rant about Cherry Magic that I've been meaning to write. So I will pick Kurosawa, for who he was and who the story wouldn't let him be. He had so much interesting potential - this "perfect" guy who had a crush on the awkward one, the guy who thought he always had to be perfect and please other people... It's such an interesting character, but the show never allowed him to change. We got a glimpse at his own struggles in that flashback about the dinner where he was being sexually harassed, and where Adachi helps him catches Kurosawa's eye. But then it felt like that thread just got dropped, and Kurosawa never got to have his own story, it was all about Adachi.

I mean, it's also possible that Kurosawa was less static than I thought and I just missed some stuff. If so, please let me know!

Basically I wanted to this aspect of Cherry Magic to be more like Blueming. I loved Blueming for subverting this idea of the "perfect" love interest. Da-woon was very similar - someone commonly considered perfect, crush on an awkward guy, feels pressure to please other people - but the story allowed him to be flawed and change and grow. I loved Kurosawa enough to want to give him the same chance!

(The longer version of the still unwritten rant includes stuff about virginity, the title and the lack of focus on sexuality, Kurosawa's thoughts as heard by Adachi, stories as fantasies vs. stories as stories... probably some other stuff too. I did like the show! It just also frustrated me in ways that detracted from my enjoyment. I possibly went into it with expectations too high.)

And if I was just going to pick a pure favorite, it would be Fujisaki, their aromantic colleague. I liked how here they subverted expectations of her being a love rival, or a overinvested gossip or something, and had her be a sweetly supportive friend, but also with her own story happening so that her world did not revolve around the main characters.

The Untamed - Look this is really hard. I'm basically throwing a mental dart at a mental dart board to choose.

Wei Wuxian. His whole... everything. Self-sacrificing, arrogant, loving, brilliant, teasing, playful, clever... I honestly don't know how to write about him or The Untamed right now. I watched it just this spring and was obsessed with it for a time, but in many ways that seems forever ago. I feel like it's sunk into my psyche in the place before words. Perhaps someday I'll have more to say.

14. drama you dropped within the first 2 episodes (we’ve all been there)  There have been several, but I'm going to say 2gether. This world, where everyone's approach to getting what they want seemed to be stalking other people and everyone ignores the word "no," just does not appeal to me. (Interestingly, this meant that the depiction of Green as a predatory femme didn't bother me as much as I expected, because a lot of people in the show seemed predatory.)

I ended up dropping it at the scene where Tine somehow manages to play porn on his classroom's projector; the secondhand embarrassment was too much for me on top of everything else. I had intended to pick it up again, and maybe I will someday since it seems to be one of the foundational Thai BLs, but it doesn't feel like a priority.

A SecUnit wakes up, with missing memories, and a long journey to find what's been taken from it.

Definitely a ‘families (born and made) fic, one that gets into how some  relationships might not fit clear labels, and where some found family dynamics may align in some ways with particular bio-family dynamics, that doesn’t necessarily mean they line up one to one with how they might be expected to. Also focused on complicated history and boundaries in these relationships, and how those relationships might change and evolve. This one hits the ‘reunion’ prompt as well. Wangxian is an implied background romantic relationship. The nature of Songchen’s relationship is left intentionally ambiguous (I was leaning into queerplatonic vibes). Song Zichen is implied as arospec, and SecUnit Ning is implied aromantic. Canon typical/equivalent violence and death, but some canon equivalent and non-canon equivalent un-deaths and a happy ending for SecUnit Ning.
