Two sketches and the final invitation to a concert of the Magpie Madrigal Society at St James' Hall, Piccadilly, with a woman scattering seeds for the birds flying around her in a field by Edward Burne-Jones, 1897
The Magpie Madrigal Society, active from 1885 to 1911, was a group of affluent and well-connected amateur musicians who gave one Charity Concert and one Invitation Concert every year. Conducted by Lionel Benson, the Society dedicateditself chiefly to English madrigals of the 16th- and 17th-centuries. However, it also performed music written for its members by RCM professors and students, including Hubert Parry, Charles Villiers Stanford, Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Gustav Holst. Many of their concerts took place at the College, too. [...] Each year the Society’s concert invitations were designed by a different artist. Prominent 19th-century figures obliged, including George du Maurier, Herbert Menzies Marshall and Hubert von Herkomer. In 1897, it was the turn of Edward Burne-Jones.

what kind of music do YOU listen to
I’ve kind of realized that i’m mildly picky about what I listen to? Either that or it’s just bc I am extremely dependent on what kind of vibes I’m in the mood for + if whatever song fits said vibe
According to spotify my top genre was broadway, which I don’t completely agree with bc I have a friend who would 100% say ‘no you loser you aren’t that into broadway’ but also she’s just into show tunes way more than anything else. Ig it’s a vibes thing more than an actual ‘this has been shown on broadway’
Though I do love musicals, i’m kind of basic since I’ve only ‘watched’ hamilton (disney+ version when it was turned into a movie). But i’ve listened to some of the more popular songs from Dear Evan Hanson, Heathers, Be More Chill, Legally Blonde, and others that are just popular songs. A few years ago I watched a TON of animatics so I think that’s kind of where it came from.
Another thing that’s not as vibe specific is orchestra/band stuff. I love love LOVE when a live orchestra and/or wind ensemble gets incorporated into music. Cody Fry was my top artist this year, and basically all his songs have an orchestra in it minus his older albums and ITS SO COOL. I play clarinet (and bass clarinet) so that’s where that appreciation comes from. I also just like, wind ensemble music. Gustav Holst (second suite in f major) is a piece I played last year and I absolute fell in love with it. Samuel Hazo is also a super good composer and he has a gigantic roster. I played two pieces of his last year, ‘Arabesque’ and ‘Solas Annes (Yesterday’s Joy)’ Going back to Holst I can 100% appreciate his planets suite.
For that kind of music though, it helps if i’ve played the piece cause then I’m like ‘hehe I know this and THIS SPOT WAS SUPER HARD ARGHHHH’ but music is super fun.
OH ALSO I’m a choir kid (basically just a fine arts kid in general) so i’ve listened to some choral pieces too just cause I like how they were performed and I like how they sound. I’m a band kid first and foremost though.
Also I listen to a lot of game soundtracks, bc instrumentals are just peak, and they vibe pretty easy since I mostly listen to soundtracks that i’ve played before. (Minecraft, Omori, Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild, Undertale, Deltarune, etc)
OKAY I’VE EXPLAINED MY VIBES I’ll give you some stats tehe
Top Artists:
1. Cody Fry (this man has such an array of songs, he goes from funk to pop to overture-esque songs and he’s just kinda epic)
2. Omori (video game that has my entire heart, the story is so AHXISJJXD and the music is awesome. Nowadays I listen more to the breakcore side of the soundtrack but all of it is peak)
3. Bluey (LMAO I forgot about this one. Like the albums on spotify? Crazy good. Taxi is just super fun bc there’s a lot of saxaphone where there’s a GROWL solo and I love that stuff fr)
4. Coyote Theory (vibes, that’s pretty much the only reason. Yeah ‘This Side of Paradise’ is good but THERES MORE THAN THAT.)
5. Toby Fox (Video gAmes. Fun fact I think it was last year or two years ago that I was in his top 0.01% of listeners xD)
RANDOM FUN FACT: Choir kid = I know my range, and my best range is alto/contralto range and the two artists that actually do the lyrics part of music are in that so it’s also bc they’re super singable for me. (ofc I can go higher than that, but I don’t like the sound of my head voice :’) )
Top Songs.
1. Snakes (Arcane)
2. Flying (Cody Fry)
3. You Only Live Once (Yuri on Ice)
4. Fix You (Cody Fry’s cover of Coldplay)
5. Before I Met You (Cody Fry)
Snakes is just super angry, which is fun for me cause I get to go AHHH with it. Everything else kind of fits what i’ve already said.

Merry Christmas 💝
This post is about one of my favorite Christmas carols and poems, written by the amazing Christina Rossetti -
In The Bleak Midwinter
Here is a version sung by Julie Andrews recorded in 1973:
youtube
Tumblr media
The full poem:
(In the public domain)
In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty —
Jesus Christ.
Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom Angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.
Angels and Archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air;
But only His Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am? —
If I were a Shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part, —
Yet what I can I give Him, —
Give my heart.
Oof. That last line, regardless of the musician who sings it, always makes my throat catch. 💓🥹
The poem was originallly published under the title "A Christmas Carol" in January 1872 in a magazine, but wasn't printed in book-form until 1875 along with Rossetti's best-known poem, Goblin Market.
In 1906, the composer Gustav Holst composed a setting of Rossetti's words (titled "Cranham") in The English Hymnal, which is the most commonly sung version of the song.
I admire her poetry a great deal. The Romantic period gave us many remarkable female authors and poets (my favorite being Jane Austen), however Rossetti was right at the tail-end of that era. The years her works were published straddle the dreamy idealistic Romantic period and the grainy gritty Realism movement. Her styles and themes follow this growth of artistic feeling as she continued to write.
Christina Rossetti (5 December 1830 – 29 December 1894) was born in London to Italian parents, was home-schooled by her mother, and grew up among artists, writers, and poets. I can't help but imagine that living among creative family of political exiles, often hosting a bohemian assortment of traveling artists from across Europe, would be anything but boring.
The amount of genius under that one roof!
Anyways, happy holidays to all, even though this current midwinter is anything but bleak and we have no snow.
Yesterday, we hit the record for the warmest Christmas Eve in Minnesota: 55 degrees. Not a single flake on the ground. But there's been plenty of rain! So weird.

Christina Rossetti, by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Christina Georgina Rossetti (5 December 1830 – 29 December 1894) was an English writer of romantic, devotional and children's poems, including "Goblin Market" and "Remember". She also wrote the words of two Christmas carols well known in Britain: "In the Bleak Midwinter", later set by Gustav Holst, Katherine Kennicott Davis, and Harold Darke, and "Love Came Down at Christmas", also set by Darke and other composers. She was a sister of the artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti and features in several of his paintings.

Music Meme
I was tagged by @celebkiriedhel, sooooo.....
🎶✨ when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, and publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)✨🎶
I've been in a bit of an…eclectic…phase lately, so here's some stuff that's gotten a lot of "airplay" in my house lately. I'm cutting it because I babbled, but before I do that I'll tag: @anamoon63, @enable--llamas, @hazely-sims, @batsheba, @lilleputtu, @echoweaver, @nectar-cellar, @erasabledinosaur, and whoever else might want to do this. Of course, feel free to ignore for any reason. No pressure at all from me!
OK, here we go...
The Gladiator score. The whole thing. I so wish I had played on this one, because it's awesome. Plus, I love Lisa Gerrard. But, on the other hand, I can totally understand why Gustav Holst's estate sued Hans Zimmer's ass because that battle theme sounds an awful lot like Mars, Bringer of War from the Planets Suite. Maybe it was intentional, what with the movie being set in Roman times and Mars being the Roman god of war, but if so you'd think they could have gotten some permission. Apparently not!
Prem Kavita/Wings of the Dawn - Monsoon This is Indipop from the early 80s. No, that isn't indie pop. It's a fusion of Indian music with Western pop. Monsoon sort of pioneered it, and it never really caught on, but as I understand it, it's rising in popularity again. And I love it. Y'all can have your J-pop and K-pop. Gimme all the Indipop. I linked to the Hindi version of the song because I like it better, but there's an English version, too.
Also, I love Sheila Chandra, Monsoon's singer, as a solo artist. It's just a tragedy that she has burning mouth syndrome and is now basically mute. :( Also also, I would love to learn to play the sitar.
Cafe de Anatolia Keeping with a world music theme… This is a 24/7 YouTube stream from a small record label based in Turkey that specializes in a fusion of ethnic music (mostly Middle Eastern and south Asian) with house music, two things that I love. The music is at once meditative and something that you can dance to. I do belly dancing for exercise (it's amazing for your core), and this stream or something else on the same channel is great music for practicing.
Ojos Asi - Shakira Speaking of belly dancing…Ah, Shakira. This is a long remix of my favorite song of hers. Great for belly dancing.
And finally, for something completely different...
One - Apocalyptica Who needs electric guitars to play Metallica songs when you have four Finns from the Sibelius Academy with cellos? I challenge you to tell the difference from about 3:30 to the end. (Also, I have very fond memories of an impromptu jam during a looooooooooooooooong recording session for the first Transformers movie, when we were waiting eternally for Michael Bay reasons, and one of the cellists just started playing the opening pizzicato arpeggios for Apocalyptica's version of "Nothing Else Matters," and the rest of us just started playing the rest. Then the brass players joined in. Good times.)
