“Breathe Life” No. 3, by Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs. @problak’s murals never fail to stop me. In a city so full of anodyne, uptight art installations that do more to comfort #Boston citizens into a state of comfort with the status quo, Mr. Gibbs’ work agitates and excites in ways that are at once personal and demanding. Many know ProBlak as a prolific “urban heiroglyphicist,” or rather just simply “graffiti artist.” His approach is to uplift with whimsy yet confront with “the real today.” I always enjoy how he will include fanciful, almost comic elements, and yet never break ties with a reality-based reflection upon the spaces where his art interacts. This was the first mural in his Breathe Life series I captured, and I’m finally adding it to my social media feed to share. I can’t encourage enough the urgency and importance of maintaining #art and #radical #creativity in urban spaces – heck it, in ALL spaces. Especially places like Boston which has a long heritage of favoring the convenient and entitled over the vital and and the essential. Art like Gibbs has the power to undermine our held perceptions without assured mutual destruction of people’s lived perspective. It seduces you into consideration. What do the arrows mean? Why are they laughing? Are his eyes closed out of coincidence? Or elation? Or imagination? Are they exploding forward with light, or have they just emerged to journey into a future with their brightness? There’s stories here; some fantastic, some political, but all urgently enticing. Thanks you once again, #ProBlak. I’ve been quietly growing adoration and fascination with the #BreatheLife murals. This is the second I‘ve discovered, over on #BlueHillAvenue. In my bicycle explorations I bumbled upon it and nearly crashed in delight because I HAD to stop and gawk. This one is big. REALLY big. And vibrant. And made me smile. It has humor. It has hope. It has purpose. It has my attention. Before I get all lyrical (as I am want to do regarding what I love), I think you should ditch my nonsense and go to ProBlak.com and explore the work and purpose of one of the most important (I think) Boston artists producing today, “@ProBlak” Rob Gibbs. A creator of purpose and nurturing, the work of Mr. Gibbs is not just passive beautification of space (although he is definitely doing that). He‘s also founder of Artists for Humanity, an organization I admire, and whose presence fills me with hope that change is real, and love can guide organization of community. Go learn, swoon, and support him, and even donate or volunteer if you can. My accolades bloom from how this #art impacts me. This is piece of art I stumbled across, honestly. We all carry phones these days; most of us. Immediately I couldn’t resist tapping investigation to learn of Mr. Gibbs work. I swooned more, because here a piece of art was shifting an understanding (my own). That is brilliant and compassionate power. I was already “on board,” yet still, it led me further. Which speaks volumes on the accuracy of vision held by Rob Gibbs. Heck, Gibbs’ Breathe Life murals impacted me so much I momentarily began avoiding social media just to expand “real work” efforts towards vital causes facing us, such as the Black Lives Matter movement for system redesign and true social justice. Art that pulls me away from indulging my ego on a phone in trade for seeking to work on betterment? Yeah, that is important art. That is what elevates graffiti from a mere act of rebellious vandalism to an act of empowering vital revolution. Thanks, Mr. Gibbs.
