Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for finding and posting the ONI logs that you do! As someone who loves the story of the game but absolutely would not have the energy to find all of the logs that aren’t on the wiki legitimately its nice to be able to see some of them. The one w/ nails in it is especially interesting! Nails was already one of my favorite dupes but that log made me like them even more tbh. Everyone say thank you to Human Nails™️ for making dupes like actually cognizant.
Also, saw your ONI stuff on artfight! I am absolutely not plotting and scheming anything at all i swear :]
Oghhhh tysm :')!!!! I've been feeling a bit self conscious abt my oni obsession lately so this means a lot! I still need to get around to making my oni story catalogue actually readable, I started a while back but ran out of steam after the like 50th incident with said one with Nails in it lol. And I actually recognized you from artfight! Saw your oni guys a few days ago and I'm honestly obsessed with them, it would be a shame if I had my hand forced and had to draw them :3c
#rat rambles#oni posting#I hope Ill have the energy to draw multiple of them tbh Im bad at chosing what characters to draw#but yeah it is rough to be an oni lore enjoyer in this world where all out of game sources are horribly outdated#and even the stuff thats not outdated on the wiki is often just. straight up wrong.#I believe I went and fixed some of the worst stuff at one point but I mostly only fixed the easier stuff to fix if Im remembering correctly#as in incorrect names and job descriptions and stuff#I should go check if the jackie thrratening to burn nikola's work thing is still there because as far as I know thats just not true#I think that was probably a misremembering of a seed is planted where nails talks abt jackie burning some of their work#because outside of that I dont think jackie burning stuff was ever explicitly brought up?#or maybe I just dont remember it or smth it has been a lil bit since I've reread everything#Ive been rereading some stuff every now and then but I havent sat down and binged it all again yet#well hey Ill have plenty of time to comb over everything once I get back to cleaning up my log doc eventually#and then maybe after that Ill. sigh. go update the wiki. sighhhhhhhh#I rly dont want to but at the same timr Someone needs to for ppl like you aka most of them who arent going to manually hunt it all down#cause trust me it feels like loosing your mind to try to find all the logs in game even while actively cheating#you know its bad when I had an easier time learning how to read the code and finding the logs there then actually finding them all in game#plus as far as I know a decent amount of them are dlc exclusive which makes it even more hard to get into#well maybe not harder but more money yknow#but yeah Im glad I had the experience of hunting lore stuff down manually but I would not wish it upon others lol

Yusuf x Gender-Neutral!Reader
Warnings - none
Word Count - 1029 words.
Description - Yusuf is many things and one of them just happens to be a coffee lover. It just so happens to be another one of those mornings, in which you feed into the coffee addiction.
Authors Notes - I'm going to list this as a thing that I learned recently that I didn't know when this was originally written - according to google, coffee is very important to Turkish culture. If that's incorrect, my apologies, I'd love to learn more about what coffee means to different cultures. When this was first written, I also notoriously hated coffee. It's something I'd only gotten into within the past year, and now I'm addicted to it. My job certainly doesn't help, as I now work at a coffee shop. Also, I wasn't originally going to write for Yusuf this week! Just something that felt right, I hope it did for you too. Ella :)
Out of the two of you, you were the early riser. That might not be saying much, necessarily, but in comparison with your partner, it certainly was. The sun was already well into the sky by the time Yusuf had woken up. It was quite a sight, and honestly, it was one you enjoyed seeing every morning. His hair stuck up unruly in places, pajamas twisted around showing how much he tossed and turned the night before.
Some mornings you got to enjoy the quiet moments spent sipping coffee, or kahve as Yusuf says, until he wakes up enough to get started with his day. It usually took about two cups of the stuff to achieve full alertness from him, though he'd keep downing mugs full of it the whole day long.
And usually, you'd have some coffee made for him. This morning was an exception, you had an appointment you had to get to, and you were already running late. Mentally, you'd mapped out a plan to go to the local coffee shop on the way there, so you could get your fix too.
You were mostly surprised he was already up, you were just slipping your shoes on when you'd heard his sleep-covered voice calling out your name from the kitchen.
“Aşkım," Yusuf called out the endearing term, and you could hear he was closer in search of you, "what did you do with the kahve?”
Only slightly offended, you finished pulling the shoe on and stared up at him. His cowlick poked out, sticking straight up behind him and you could've sworn his shirt was almost completely backward at this point. Before responding, you took a moment to adjust the shirt slightly.
"The coffee," you hummed, smoothing his locks with your fingers gently. He leaned into the gesture, and you continued softly, "bottom cabinet by the fridge?"
He shook his head slowly, eyes shutting involuntarily as you played with his hair, "if it were in the cabinet I wouldn't have asked, aşkım."
There was no real malice to his tone, still, your hand retracted, instead opting to rest against his shoulders. You let a slight pout play across your lips, "grouchy."
"Please, aşkım," Yusuf whined, eyes shooting wide open. His hand wrapped around your wrist and placed it roughly on his head once more. "If you love me even a little you'd help me."
You sighed, the pout rolling into a smile, "dramatic. Fine, as long as you promise not to bite my head off."
Yusuf's hand still encased yours as it drooped from his hair to his cheek, to your side. The trek from the entranceway to the kitchen wasn't a long one, thankfully, and you began to scour through the cabinets. True to his word, it wasn't in the cabinet it was usually in - and it didn't escape his notice that you were looking there.
"Did you not believe me, aşkım," he said, as though he were deeply betrayed by your disbelief. Groggily, his hand flew to his chest with a mock hurt, before it rested on the edge of the countertop.
You scoffed, looking up at him from your crouched position, "you've been known to miss things, especially when you're half asleep. My apologies."
"Accepted," he shot you a grin as he leaned back against the island, still facing you.
The distraction was welcome, and you let your eyes linger on his figure long enough that he only raised his eyebrows in response. You shook your head, focusing on finding his coffee. Your friend wouldn't mind you being a few minutes late, but you were already cutting it close.
After an initial look inside all of the cabinets, you hummed quietly to yourself. You were suddenly grateful you didn't have many places to look, yet wondered how he'd still managed to lose the coffee in such a small kitchen.
"I wonder where you put it," you said, mostly to yourself, You weren't entirely sure he could hear you anyway, as his eyes began to slip shut. Rummaging through a cabinet you'd already looked through, you began moving things to see further back and behind.
Apparently your comment was enough to wake him up once more. Yusuf scoffed loudly, jumping from his casual pose to a more defensive one, "why would you assume I moved it?"
You almost dropped the brown sugar, placing it on the countertop while shooting him a look over your shoulder, "I don't know. Maybe because you made coffee last?"
"When?"
It was something of a nightly ritual, the late hours when Yusuf would seek out a cup of kahve. Something that was slightly unnerving to you, though not unusual at this point of being with him. It was just never something you could participate in, because if you did, you'd be up half the night while he snored soundly.
"Right before bed. Last night," you sighed again, and he moved close by you to peer into the cabinet you were looking in. His clothed chest pressed into your arm, and his presence wasn't entirely unwelcome. It seemed he had made it his mission to make leaving the house today as hard as possible.
Yusuf's warm breath fanned your cheek, peering at you with long eyelashes, "did I?"
Quickly you shoved everything you took out back onto the shelves, with no help from the man next to you. Once the cabinet was thoroughly looked through, although difficult with the walking distraction beside you, you moved to the last place in the kitchen you hadn't checked. You pushed into him only slightly, and his body turned to face you with your movements.
A sharp look on your face held a ghost of amusement as you nodded your head accusingly, "you did," and promptly began rummaging through the fridge. You'd never stored the grounds in there, but you couldn't really think of any other places they could be hiding in.
There, behind the gallon of milk was the coffee. You grabbed it quickly, straightening as you narrowed your eyes at him. Dark brown eyes peered back at you sheepishly, waving his hands innocently in the air.
"The fridge," you asked, tone dripping with judgment, "since when do we keep the coffee there?"
"Meleğim, that's where you're supposed to keep kahve," he deadpanned, his eyes still wide as he stepped closer to you.
"Oh, really," you said, letting him embrace you, arms wrapped around your waist. In turn, you wrapped your own around his shoulders. Yusuf's nose pressed into your cheek, his lips following suit not long after. "Then why didn't you remember it was in there?"
He pulled his face back quickly, eyes narrowing at you although the corners of his lips quirked up. Clearly amused, and already more awake than you expected this early with no caffeine, he tutted at you reprehensively.
"Because," he said slowly as if you should have already known this, a grin splitting across his face rapidly, "I need kahve, aşkım."

You mentioned that you’d been reading novels? Do you have any favorites or favorite authors? I’d love some recommendations! Someone recommended The Love Hypothesis to me and I couldn’t stand it. It was just dumb du dum dumb DUUUMMMBBB! I can’t 🙃
Hi! I’m happy to give my recommendations, although I think I’m probably speaking into the void lol because my tastes in fiction are not what most women would prefer, I think. And sadly, I, too, can say that things like The Love Hypothesis and its ilk are very much not my style!
Anyone else want to join in the book recommendations? Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, anything that’s struck your fancy to recommend? Maybe we can all find some new good stuff! @in-silks-and-flesh-and-leather @young-frankenstein @gabesprincess @mrs-gucci

Wilbur Smith - Pros: In my opinion, he is the absolute best adventure writer. I have read everyone who has a reputation for it and no one comes close to him. He is also a very good writer who writes descriptively and vividly, he’s the best out-and-out writer of my favorites. He has GREAT characters and writes women very well. Of the authors I listed, his characters are always the best! He always writes strong manly alpha males and smart bad ass women, which are obviously my hard preference for each. He always has romance as a factor in his books and he generally does a very good job with it, and he also pushes the limit for smut in main stream novels (although this is nothing close to porn writing or erotica). He also has some hilariously epic flops in that department and has been nominated for worst sex in fiction awards twice, I believe lol! But, it’s often a hit with me! I can get totally engrossed in his books and read them for hours on end and then live in that fantasy world thereafter in my mental cineplex! Of the authors I’ve listed, he has the largest female fanbase, so I’m not alone! Cons: He tends to end books too quickly for my taste and really wraps things up quick and dirty once the main story is told. The biggest negative to me is that he is really a merciless bastard when it comes to killing off and torturing characters lol. Most of his books have happy endings, but watch out for the next 50 pages of so of the next book lol! The only two consecutive books I listed below as favorites are rarities that bypass that trope of his and everyone lives happily ever after for two whole novels lol. Warnings: These aren’t negatives in my opinion at all, but new readers should be advised of a few things lol. He writes very graphic violence from action to death to torture, and no one is immune. Main characters, women, kids, infants, animals- you name it, he’ll kill it! He also doesn’t shy away from rapes in some of his books. Often they are alluded to in acts of war and I have never seen it against a main character, although there are several very fun scenes of attempted rape followed by penile amputation by the intended victim! Finally, he was writing from 1964-2021 when he died in his 80′s. He’s shamelessly offensive on many levels and highly politically incorrect, which I enjoy very very much in the neutered frightened politically correct environment we have today! But if that’s a sensibility you have, steer clear.
I’ve also read almost all of his books and I haven’t read one that I didn’t enjoy. He’s the only author I’ve read whose books I’ve enjoyed across the board. He has an ancient Egypt series that appeals less to me, but it’s still very good. It’s hard to pick favorites! But these are the best of the best!
I’ve read all of these several times each, just like watching my favorite movies over and over lol!
Triumph of the Sun & King of Kings - These two books really should be read back to back. King of Kings is a story within the first book that occurs about 50 pages before the end of the first book. Having this problem in spades myself, I think what happened is he got carried away with the first book and then had to split them into two for a manageable size for his editor. Both books are set mostly in the 1880′s, although they span many years, in Sudan and Abyssinia during the Mahdist Wars. Triumph of the Sun centers around the fall of Khartoum and King of Kings involves some romantic capers where one man fucks up and has to win his woman back after she’s run off into Abyssinia on an adventure with better company. The books follow three badass sisters, two badder ass men, and an evil arch villain lol. The main characters are the girls, one older sister and two twin girls who start out the story as children, and the two hot ass men! Haters be advised that the twins marry the men when the girls are teenagers, which works for the story and the setting. The heroes are Ryder Courtney, a rugged smuggler/adventurer and my personal favorite, and Penrod Ballantyne, a snobbish English officer and manwhore. Yes, Wilbur might as well have named them Massive McCock and Alpha Sexingston. If you don’t love that, we can’t be friends. Old Wilbur also shamelessly describes my favorite of the men as having a ‘monstrous’ cock. Good times! Both men vie for the older sister for a while in some very fun male stupidity and dick waving, too. It’s a fun ride. These books are the most fun and delightful bit of sex-driven, alpha-male, violent adventuring I could imagine! The characters are great and very well-defined. The adventure and suspense are top notch. They are in my absolute favorites!
The Seventh Scroll - This is a very cool modern adventure story about following a trail to find a lost Egyptian tomb. It’s not the usual fanfare for this sort of thing at all and it’s very good. Of course, there are bad guys and natural obstacles too! Ancient puzzles, maps, booby traps, hostile environments, bad guys, twists and turns! This has everything I love to read! The hero is a swoon-worthy Englishman and the heroine matches him step for step. I love it! The best book of this kind I have ever read.
Those in Peril - This is more modern action and is the sort of novel that Stephen Hunter and Robert Ludlam wish they could write! (Yes, I’ve read many of their books too and rank them as alright). This has yet another badass and hotass manly man extraordinaire, who is probably my favorite of the men Wilbur has written. He has a description that, conveniently enough fits a mental image I always insert into leading men in books too lol! Tall, broad, powerfully built, dark hair, piercing eyes, an imperial nose, and a ruggedness that gave him a piratical air. That’s not me paraphrasing! In this book, the leading lady’s 19yo daughter gets kidnapped by terrorists and she hires the smoldering hero to rescue her. The woman doesn’t sit on the sidelines and is a great character herself, ad this book also has a very cool Russian woman assassin who teams up, It has one of the best if not the best romances, and it also spans a period of years. It’s a blast and a half with everything I look for! However, be warned, this is extremely violent and has a fairly detailed rape of a lesser character.
Assegai - The next generation from the Triumph of the Sun and King of Kings headlines this book with the son of one of the couples from those books. It’s set in early 1900′s up through WWI and the 1920′s. The hero, who inherited his dad’s hot looks and monstrous cock, is a professional hunter for celebrities like Roosevelt. On safari with a rich German, he decides to steal the German’s mistress like a dumbass and run off with her, which sparks a series of shitshows that lead to them both being involved in espionage and hijinks before and during WWI. I’m usually not a fan of large scale war settings, but this and the books that follow through WW2 are very good. They are not war and politic centric and the action/adventure stays more personal, which I enjoy.
A Time to Die - This book follows a modern burned out bastard professional hunter in Africa who is guiding clients on safaris. He’s guiding an avid hunter aristocrat and his uptight and borderline anti-hunter adult daughter. Lots of bickering about that. The aristocrat gets zealous and bribes the hero to take him and the daughter into a neighboring not-so-friendly country in pursuit of a record elephant. The daughter tells them they’re both very stupid, but she gets dragged along anyway. Needless to say, she was right and all hell breaks loose and the hero has to get the girl out of a war zone in the middle of Africa while bad guys chase after them! This was the first book of Wilbur’s that I read when I was around 15 and it hooked me on him! It’s a blast and could be described as enemies to lovers, or at least antagonists to lovers, in a survivalist setting.
In case anyone had any doubt, I absolutely picture my favorites in the roles of my favorite men in the books that I’m both reading and writing!

Michael Crichton - Pros: I rank Crichton as the best for unique stories and concepts, and I know I’m not alone. Each of his books and stories are totally different, apart from the Jurassic Park sequels obviously. He meticulously researches his books, so I also feel smarter after having read them and you do learn genuine tidbits of highbrow information, which I love! I consider him unmatched in terms of his ideas and stories. Cons: He rarely does much in the way of fleshing out characters beyond what is necessary. This keeps him in my number two position instead of ranking number one. With very few exceptions, I rarely even recall the characters from his books because they tend to be very bland and somewhat similar to each other in terms of voice and persona. He’s focused on telling his remarkable story, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but characters are usually very blah in my opinion. He rarely has a romantic component beyond a few paragraphs scattered through hundreds of pages, if that matters. Stylistically, his writing is very to the point and spares heavy description other than when absolutely necessary. Also, because he varies so much from novel to novel in terms of his story, some of them are just a total miss for me. Rising Sun and Airframe are two of them. Warnings: Lots of violence with a medical detail to gore. If that bothers you lol!
Timeline - This is one of my all time favorite novels and has stoked my time travel fantasies for years! It’s fantastic, intelligent, and fast paced! And one of the rare exceptions to my statement about poor characters. He has a couple in this that are quite good, enough so to be memorable anyway. There are several side plots and even a romance. He researched the shit out of medieval warfare and also medieval life for this book and it superbly done. Also, because the characters are coming from our time, they see these things through modern eyes, which is really cool to me. It’s honestly a toss up to me whether this or Jurassic Park was more of an adventure but they are neck and neck!
Eaters of the Dead aka The Thirteenth Warrior - This is technically based on a true story or fragments of one and then fictionalized for a narrative but not to a fantasy degree. It’s based off the real life ‘diary’ of an Arab who was conscripted first as an ambassador to the Norse and then kind of kidnapped into fighting with them. The factual basis were true events, at least as the real dude wrote them lol. The book is a lot of this educated and civilized Arab being appalled at these brutal heathen Vikings and their lifestyle lol. Again, Crichton researched Viking lifestyle and really goes into it, which I loved! There’s also plenty of Viking action and ass kicking.
Jurassic Park - I think everyone knows about this one lol. One important plot point that is too often forgotten is that the whole reason Hammond brought his crew out to the park to begin with was to satisfy his blood sucking lawyers lol!
Pirate Latitudes - This was published after he died and I think it was not entirely finished because it winds up unfortunately fast. But, it’s a well-researched pirate adventure on the high seas and I loved it! This book and POTC are entirely responsible for my pirate fetish!
Prey - This is the closest to horror Crichton wrote in my opinion and the idea is really cool and scary! Kind of half-way terminator-esque idea but much more intelligently and subtly done. Basically, a bunch of nanobots with AI escape from a lab and use humans for hosts etc.
Disclosure - This turns the tables on sexual harassment and has a woman boss aggressively sexually harassing her hot male underling. But that’s only the first hundred pages. It’s really all about laws, double standards both ways, gender roles being challenged, assumptions about sexuality, and my personal favorites, legal brinksmanship and maneuvering. This is a departure for me because it is zero action or adventure, but I enjoyed it very much! This succeeds with me because it is very very intelligent and very true to life for the setting and the situation. If it was less smartly written, it would be a dud.

Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child (co-writers) - Pros: These guys co-write very good thrillers, adventure, and borderline horror. They do various styles very well and many of their early books are very different from each other. They are great at keeping interest high and pages turning and their stories rarely lag. Their books are smart enough to be believable. They have frequent women leads, although honestly they don’t write women the best and, similar to Crichton, the characters can be bland. They do have two very good characters though that are showcased in many books. Cons: They fell into a groove in recent years with their most popular character, who is a good one, Special Agent Pendergast, and most of their books now center around him. I have only read a few in that series, but they were good.
Thunderhead - Definitely my favorite of theirs, one of my all time favorites, and the book that got me hooked on them. This is about a modern expedition led by a woman archaeologist out into the back country of the 4 Corners looking for a lost Anasazi city. This is set right in my backyard and I’ve been to many of the places they discuss in the novel. It’s a horse packing trip into the wild and of course there are bad guys after the prize too, skinwalkers, natural obstacles, etc. There’s a small romantic element. It’s very good and a very fun ride. I also have an au of sorts that lives in my head about a Flip thing with this that has played out many times!
Rip Tide - This is about excavating the mysterious pit in Oak Island, long before there was a show about it lol. Boobytraps, bad guys, a Pandora’s box of treasure that was never supposed to be found, etc.
Cabinet of Curiosities - This is semi-horror and serial killer hijinks with a twist. Lots of dark quasi occult themes and chasing a killer who may have been active for a century.
The Relic - This is closest to straight up horror and it’s very well done. A mysterious artifact is sent home to a museum for curation from an expedition in the Amazon. Mysterious deaths in the museum ensue and the shit hits the fan on the night of a big gala.
Bloodless - Their most recent novel, which is set in Savannah GA. It involves mysterious killings and heists, and a signature killing style that is very much like hunting a vampire who has killed for ages.
Dan Brown - I think it’s a rare person who hasn’t heard of these books, and they are famous for a reason! His Da Vinci Code series is superb and meticulously researched. They have enough intrigue and adventure to keep you very invested and also a huge amount of knowledge about real artifacts and artwork. Whether or not you agree with his premise and conclusion, the facts he cites are remarkable! It is an absolute must to read the big illustrated editions of these books to see exactly what he’s talking about as you go! It enhances the experience 10000%! Even if you’re not into the story, just learning all the little facts and nuances about the artwork and artifacts mentions, and about all the historic legends, makes these books a blast!
The Da Vinci Code
Angels and Demons
Inferno
Jeff Long - My dad read these books and insisted I do as well and they are wonderful! This author is an outdoorsman and a mountain climber, and a lot of his books center around that knowledge, which is cool to read from someone who knows what they’re doing but who writes a more compelling story than reading someone like Krakauer. These two books both involve badasses going into a deep unexplored underground cave system and encountering problems. They are horror/adventure and very good and suspenseful. Basically, the concept is that Hell is a real place, geographically speaking, and so are the creatures that inhabit the unexplored depths. There’s nothing mystical or religious about it, just gnarly creatures that should never see the light of day, lots of action and horror while trapped in a cave system, and cool mountaineering and climbing stuff thrown in. He has some other books about straight mountain climbing and meeting with disaster and also a virus outbreak one, but they’re not as interesting. These two are very good, though.
The Descent
Deeper
Carl Hiassen - This dude is on the same spectrum as Wilbur Smith for me, but he’s the polar opposite! He has phenomenal characters, but they’re all amazing in the worst ways! His heroes are conniving hookers, violent vagrants, sleazy lawyers, dirty cops, skulking reporters. I love it! His books are intentional cluster fucks from beginning to end! He writes novels like the Coen Bros make movies. He also has some of the best descriptors I have ever read. Smarmy little shitweasel is one of my personal favorites. His books are mostly comedies with some heist, kidnappings, violence, and criminal shennanigans thrown in. Warnings: If you were offended by me talking about conniving hookers or sleazy lawyers, this guy isn’t for you. High offense and maximum fun!

I have a total of 13 followers now! Hi hi!!!
So update for those who saw that I intended to post about my job (I worked in an occult shop). Obviously with the pandemic that's not happening right now. My boss has been very generous in not firing me and keeping a spot open for me when it's safe to return to work, but that could be a while.
However, I do really miss talking to other witches. I loved helping people, teaching and learning about magic. That was my biggest draw to that job. So! Any of my followers, please talk to me! Ask me questions or tell me things about your practice!!! I don't care what.
I'm fairly decent at gemstone ID (still a noob) so if you have rocks you've forgotten the name of, I can probably point you in the right direction. Just send a picture and a description. If you need help figuring out good components for a spell or ritual, I can give you basic ideas (colors, tools, stones, plants). If you're curious about any baby level stuff like what it feels like to talk to a god or spirit, how to tell if something is a sign, etc, hit me up!!!
I'm not an expert by any means but if something is beyond my expertise I'll tell you so. And if I give you incomplete or incorrect information by accident, I would love to be corrected! I want to learn too.
I hope all of you are safe right now, I know the world is crazy. Keep on truckin'! 💛

If the four main cures of Fresh Precure had Tumblr blogs, what would the blogs look like? What would they post?
They have different blogs as civilians and as precures.
The collective tumblr blog for all 4 Pretty Cures is the only one where they bothered to get a custom theme, one which is full of glitter and hearts. The blog’s avatar is the clover symbol, while the header is all 4 girls posing together. The girls post pictures of Chiffon, random thoughts, out of context quotes, weird things they did, videos Tarte took of the girls fighting, trivia about themselves and about things such as their devices and their mission, posts making fun of the villains they fight, and selfies while transformed to show off their outfits. They make and reblog memes about themselves. They reblog their own fanart, some positivity posts and resource link masterposts, and lots of weird posts they see. Every time they make mission progress, they post an update with all the details.
All 4 Cures make shitposts all the time, both on their regular blogs and on their precure blogs. It’s not uncommon for a precure to post something surreal or nonsensical at 3am.
Love’s blog is pink with heart emojis in the title and one of those transparent headers with the chocolate syrup and rainbow sprinkles. As well as random thoughts and shitposts, she often reblogs junk food, gifs of Miyuki, and some cute updates on things she and Setsuna did together. And memes. Lots of memes.
Cure Peach’s blog is also pink, but a different shade. Her header is herself and Passion. As well as the stuff on the collective blog, she also reblogs TONS of ridiculous posts, and the occasional thing about whatever fandoms she’s in. She’s the first to reblog “incorrect precure quotes” posts. At 4am she often goes off about how much she loves setsuna and the result is both relationship goals and makes people ask if she’s drunk since she does sometimes seem slightly drunk.
Miki’s blog is blueish-purple, her header is some weird quote, and the thing she posts most often is selfies. She does post random things and reblog cool stuff, but it’s primarily her own outfits. She’s posted some tutorials on making perfume before. Once she reblogged a picture of Cure Berry calling it outfit inspo.
Cure Berry’s blog is a more blue blue, her header is herself aiming her attack at the viewer, and her blog isn’t that different from the collective one, only there’s more selfies. She’s the first to reblog “ur fav X” posts featuring precures. She also posts more selfies than the others on this blog too, absolutely loving to show off her outfits. She’s the least likely to night post, but when she does night post, she tends to rapidly escalate her teammates’ posts. When she’s in a more angsty mood, sometimes she posts about that, too.
Inori’s blog is orange, her header is a picture someone took of her in a fancy dress next to the white tiger, and she frequently posts and reblogs pics of cute animals. Her Christianity shows, but not to the level where she seems like a total nut job. Once she squealed because “DID CURE PINE JUST REBLOG MY POST?!?!?!?!”.
Cure Pine’s blog is yellow. Her header is herself with Chiffon. She’s the first to reblog precure memes. She’s the one video recording as Peach, Berry, and Passion do the macarena for the internet. She posts chiffon pics more often than her teammates. This has backfired on her, since the villains DO follow/stalk every blog owned by a precure, and when Pine posted a Chiffon pic with the location, guess who turned up not long afterwards.
Setsuna’s blog is entirely red with a white title and description, her header is some black and red lace. Her blog is a themeless mix of a whole bunch of random stuff. She almost revealed her identity by accident once when she casually brought up something she had no idea was Not A Normal Thing That Anyone Outside Fucked-Up Cyberpunk Dystopia Does.
Cure Passion’s blog has a similar look to her civilian one, but her header is herself doing some dramatic pose. She’s the first to reblog precure fanart. As well as the stuff you’d find on the collective blog, there’s also quotes and stuff relating to her life and experiences, and she often posts things about the bad guys, particularly dumb stuff westar did that got him humiliated and now has Setsuna posting about online to 10k+ followers. She asks questions about the world, which sometimes results in tons of ridiculous joke responses mixed in with real ones and ends up being exactly as unhelpful as asking the garage door about the world. And sometimes, she makes angsty personal posts.
Eas had tumblr, too, so she could study humans. And oh man, did she ever get some WEIRD impressions. As to her blog itself, main colour black, sub-colour red, her avatar is that red diamond symbol and she did not hide that it’s her. As well as making fun of westar, ominous stuff with a “you’re/we’re all doomed” vibe, edgy quotes, and the occasional screamer link, she made semi-cryptic posts about her existential crisis/mental breakdown, and about Cure Peach (who she never mentioned by name but everyone knows who she’s talking about). These became more and more frequent over time, until she disappeared from tumblr for just under a week. Then the blog deactivated. Cure Passion’s tumblr blog debuted that same day.

Before the night ends, I want to give the wishings of a Merry Christmas to the Mao Mao fandom and especially to @fanfics-and-theories-and-stuff whom I had the pleasure of being their secret santa in the gift exchange. I apologize if this is getting to you past when it would be considered Christmas wherever you live. I’ve never written a story with someone else’s OC before but I hope I captured her well for you and I hope you really enjoy what I wrote! Also a shout out to @maomaosmother for hosting another wonderful event!
Prompt: The sheriff trio and OC Kaiya enjoy Christmas carols around the fire while it snows outside
If there was one word Mao could think of to summarize his emotions that morning, it would be ‘nervous.’
And why wouldn’t it be? It’s not as if this was a turn of events he could have predicted.
It was several months back when Mao had gotten a phone call from his older sister Minori, a groaning sound coming from her end before Mao Mao had even had the chance to offer her a hello. Their father, Shin Mao, was a man who viewed any amount of complaining as a sign of weakness, an inability to take control over one’s problems, and so the Mao siblings more often than not had to rely on each other for any form of support in regard to their more negative emotions.
At first it was merely a routine exchange, another chance for Minori to vent her frustrations over the difficulties in trying to maintain both her hero duties and her responsibilities as the owner of a local eatery she had established in a larger kingdom she had recently settled in (business was good, her souffles were still known as her specialty.) This time, however, his sister seemed more tense than usual. She was barreling through a rant over an incorrect utility bill she had received when she also mentioned finding a hand written letter in the mail from a ‘Kaiya,’ and Mao would have thought nothing of it had his sister not immediately tried to walk back her mentioning of it.
Naturally, he asked about it, and unexpectedly his sister tried to lie in response. It only took him asking one more time before she caved and told him more. None of the Mao siblings were good liars, after all, another trait they could thank Shin Mao for.
What he wasn’t expecting to be told, however, was that Kaiya was a younger sister who had been all but scrubbed out from the official familial records. Minori was light on the details, knowing very little herself. An incident involving a different clan, a promise their mother made that even Shin Mao refused to speak of. It was a lot for Mao Mao to process, even with so much of the necessary information still missing.
That’s why, just a few weeks later, he both was and wasn’t surprised to find his own mysterious letter mixed in with his regular assortment of mail. It was just as Minori had recounted, a handwritten letter from someone named ‘Kaiya’ with the intent to introduce themselves. The wording of the letter seemed earnest enough, and even if a small part of Mao wondered if this was some sort of trick, the larger part still felt a sense of obligation to respond back, especially if it was someone claiming to be related to him.
And for a while that’s how things went. A series of correspondences only carried out in letter form; attempts to know each other and share stories about what growing up was like for the both of them. It was on a whim, after running the idea by both Badgerclops and Adorabat first, that he decided to invite her to a small holiday get together at Sheriff HQ. It was going to be Mao’s first Christmas spent in Pure Heart Valley, and what better way to keep a night of firsts going than finally meeting Kaiya face to face?
As it turned out, things had a way of lining up for the better. Kaiya noted that she would have been passing through Pure Heart around that time anyway (something about a yearly caroling trip she made with friends during the winter season) and so she would be able to stay over for the day before leaving later that night to go singing out in the kingdom.
It wasn’t long before that day finally arrived. The trio spent all morning decorating their living room and tree, chopping wood, preparing holiday treats, and it wasn’t until later that afternoon, once the doorbell rang and Kaiya had stepped across the threshold into their home for the first time, that Mao found a new description for his suddenly changing disposition: cautiously hopeful.
At first, things were noticeably awkward. Small talk that seemed to go nowhere, a tour of their headquarters where one of the smoke bombs Adorabat had been presenting got accidentally set off, and even a moment where Mao began choking on one of the prepared snacks. The incident was relatively small and only lasted for a moment, but it was simply another item to add to the list of ways in which Mao thought the visit was turning into a disaster.
It wasn’t until later, when Kaiya was perusing over a bookshelf, did things seem to finally settle into a better direction. It was a photo album she had found, or at least it was an attempted one.
The Mao clan had never been necessarily considered affectionate with one another. All of Mao’s childhood had been dedicated to training (well, self-training) and his sisters were often too busy with their father’s hero regimen to spend any quality time with each other. Even holidays were considered less of a break and more so a day where the workload just simply wasn’t as heavy. And all of that reflected in the book she had found, where pictures of the Mao clan together were few and far between.
Even still, to Kaiya, it was much more than she had previously seen of them, having been raised outside of the family. And even with his own hang ups, Mao found himself more than willing to indulge her in her questions. Some came easier than others, obviously. Mao Mao’s voice finding a slight sense of warmth when the discussion managed to linger on the sibling side of things rather than the parental, and for her own part Kaiya seemed less inclined to want to discuss her parentage as well.
It was during a sudden lull in the conversation when the two cats finally noticed that they had lost track of time. The descending sun had given away fully to the darkness of night long ago while Badgerclops and Adorabat, who at first had been quietly listening to Mao discuss his family, had slipped away to play with the new toys the blue bat had received that morning.
Kaiya then began to move about at a tempered pace, she had plans to meet her caroling group in the kingdom’s central plaza and she was now behind schedule, but there was a part of her that hesitated at the idea of ending her visit so abruptly. Mao assured her that he understood, assuring her that there would be more chances to see each other in the future. Kaiya slipped on her coat over her long, light blue skirt and leggings and began walking with her brother to the door when they discovered that the weather had decided on other plans that evening.
A sudden chilling gale blew past the pair, and even with the door open just a crack a small pile of snow had managed to slide into Mao’s home from outside. It was a snowstorm, and any chance of leaving had now dropped down to near zero. With a growl, Mao called out to Badgerclops that it had been his job to periodically check up on the weather while the badger argued back that it was the cat’s job to make sure his sister was able to make her obligations on time. It wasn’t until Adorabat added her own voice into the mix, yelling about their yelling, that things went from bad to worse.
In an instant, as if the world itself had closed its eyes, their surroundings were suddenly cast into pitch darkness. There was no mistaking it, a power outage thanks to the raging storm.
There was confusion to begin with, Adorabat seeking out Mao Mao in the darkness while Badgerclops tried his best not to accidentally trip over anything. The black cat was about to call out to them and take charge when another voice cut through the darkness instead. Kaiya called out and asked Badgerclops if his arm could be used as a flashlight, the mustelid giving a sheepish chuckle in response as he joked about why he hadn’t already thought about doing that.
Once he produced a source of light, Kaiya began to divvy out tasks: Adorabat was to collect some of the leftover snacks and Mao Mao was to gather some of the wood that had been chopped that morning, all while Badgerclops used his light to help guide them. She gave them all a time limit of ten minutes before they were to reconvene in front of the fireplace. It was during his time finding the wood that Mao Mao couldn’t help but smile to himself about the situation; taking charge of the situation just as he was about to, maybe they were more alike as siblings than even he anticipated.
The sheriff trio arrived back at the empty fireplace before the ten minutes, the badger and cat already taking the initiative to place a few logs in hearth and to get a flame started in order to alleviate some of the ever creeping cold. It wasn’t until the very end of the allotted time that Kaiya made her way over to the roaring fire and joined them, pulling out from behind her an old broadcast radio she said she had noticed in the office room during the tour.
After tinkering around with the device for a moment they found that it already had batteries inside, most likely left in there by one of the previous sheriffs to whom it had belonged to. It took even longer to find a signal that was anything more than loud static, but once they found a channel that worked it brought a smile to each of their faces. Christmas music, carols, holiday tunes with sweet, merry voices that seemed to mix with the warmth of the fire and make it glow that much brighter and drown out the roaring of the snow outside.
They spent the rest of the night like this. Letting the yuletide songs carry their conversation as they happily shared the food Adorabat had brought, blankets cozily wrapped around them as every now and then they raised their own voices in song if they knew the words.
It was a couple of hours later when the last of them finally fell asleep nestled near the coaxing warmth of the fire. It was another hour still before the radio finally died, the only song left playing then being the soft crackle of the burning wood before them and the whispers of fresh snow falling just out beyond the window.

Lasabrjotr Chapter 26: On The Job
Chapters: 26/? Fandom: Thor (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe Rating: Teen And Up Warnings: None Relationships: Loki x Reader (Let’s try this again) Characters: Loki (Marvel), Reader Additional Tags: Post-Endgame: Best Possible Ending (Canon-Divergent), Here Have My Favorite Corn Recipe, Seriously It’s Really Good, Oh Yeah A Major Crime Was Committed, Remember That? Summary: No really, it’s a very good recipe, you should all try it out.
“So, what you're telling me,” You said between bites of dried stockfish. “Is that this goddess, your sister, was around for like, three thousand years, and was apparently a favorite of the entire army. You have those little bits of fresco painting to show me. But in the span of like, a few decades, everyone had forgotten her?”
“Or, at least, refused to speak of her, yes.” Loki said, passing a plate of buttered, dark bread your way.
It was just the two of you this time, in a little room beside the kitchens. You could hear the cooks working on the other side of the wall.
“I'm a bit leery to show you the frescoes just yet.' Loki said. “They're extremely unpleasant, and frankly, embarrassing. I brought several bits of the paintings that came afterwards, and those are much nicer. For one thing, I'm in them.”
You smiled indulgently. “That's the important part, right? Just how much stuff did you grab on your way out?”
“Oh, quite a bit.” Loki waved his fork on the air. “Practically everything I passed by, actually. I have quite a bit of room, though I admit, I stretched things a bit. Transporting living things that way is rather difficult.”
“Living things?”
“Leynarodd. The pegasus, a few others. Certain objects I thought would come in handy later, such as Gungnir. A few books, a few artworks. All artifacts now.”
You scooped lingonberry preserves onto a little cup of skyr. “But the point I was making was, there are plenty of your people that are old enough to remember her. So how come nobody ever said anything? Why were there no precautions taken to prevent her return?”
“From what we've been able to put together, Hela did have many supporters, despite her murderous tendencies. She embodied the endpoint of all that Asgard valued, the culmination of the 'noble warrior culture'. When our father decided to change his tactics to more peaceful means, there was, initially, a split in support. The commoners supported Odin; it seems they were a bit weary of being sent off to die in endless wars, no matter how much honor it brought their families. The nobles supported Hela, as they were loathe to let go of even an ounce of their power, no matter the consequences.
Then, apparently, Hela did some things that lost her all support. Brunnhilde says she attempted a coup, and murdered everyone in the palace as she went-hundreds of people, including many of her noble supporters. Heimdall remembers, and has hinted that she did something even worse, but he will not talk about it, no matter what we do.
And that's how most of the older Asgardians are. Those who are old enough to remember will not speak of it. Those who were there went about erasing her name and hiding her from sight, as if it would somehow make her wither away into nothing. We can't force them to talk, not yet. The people are traumatized after all this. Some of them saw their lives destroyed twice by her. We will simply have to wait until someone is ready.”
Loki grabbed a small bunch of grapes, and split them between you.
“As for precautions, well, I don't know exactly why Father failed so badly there. But he always did seem to have a blind spot when it came to his children.” Loki snorted quietly. “Specifically, the left side. The more I think about it the more it makes sense that he reacted so severely to Thor and myself when we displayed a lack of concern for the lives of others. He must have seen her, growing within us. He must have been terrified that we would take the same path, that all of his children would share the same fate...”
He slammed his fist on the table, suddenly angry. You jumped.
“All he had to do was say one thing about it, and all of this could have been avoided! He didn't even have to tell me, if it came down to it. He could have told Thor, and Thor would have told me! That's probably why he didn't. After Hela, he probably couldn't bring himself to trust even in his own children. But all of this, literally everything happened because he just wouldn't tell us what he needed to!”
His moods were still mercurial as ever. You might not ever get used to it, but you'd better try. You reached out and took the hand he had slammed down. He blinked in surprise, all anger draining from his face. He uncurled his fingers just enough for you to dip yours into his palm.
“Forgive me.” He said quietly. “That was unbecoming.”
“This is a part of my job too, isn't it?” You asked. “To help out with this kind of thing?”
“Technically, yes. Council is a part of the job description. I hesitate to foist that burden entirely off onto you however. I am...difficult at times, and you are not without your own traumas.”
“That's true, but you've dealt with them pretty well so far.” You pointed out.
“I have, considering how many of them involve hitting me in the face.” He chuckled at your mumbled apology. “I am not worried about it. And you have nothing to fear either. My fury could burn the very stars, and I would still never raise a hand to you.”
“Yeah, I kinda figured you weren't the type. You seem above that kind of thing.”
“Do I?” He asked, sounding pleased. “Though if a woman were to come at me with a sword, I would not just stand there and get stabbed. We've no shortage of ladies with swords in Asgard, and then there is Freya, of course...”
“Yeah? The book said she was a fertility goddess?”
“Hmph. That book was kinder to her than it was to me, but it was still incorrect. Oh, she and her brother are connected to fertility, of course. Freyr is the fertility of the tilled earth, that is well kept and fruitful. Freya is the fertility of the battlefield. Blood makes the grass grow, and she reaps a crop of the dead.”
“Uh...poetic?”
“I'm saying she is a battle goddess as well. Associations with war and combat are also overwhelmingly common among Aesir. The twins make a particularly effective pair; while Freyr is no pacifist, he also dislikes violence for its own sake. However, so great is his connection to life, that the life-bringers, that is to say, women, can never come to harm in his presence. That works out very well for Freya, who relishes battle as much as any Asgardian, and can lead her armies to battle without the slightest fear when her brother is around. She doesn't show much fear when he isn't around either.”
“But isn't that how Hela was?” You asked.
“Oh no, not at all. Freya loves battle, not slaughter. She does not bring combat to those who are not involved with it, she accepts surrender, she knows mercy. Hela would kill anybody, and once she started, she wouldn't stop until the last drop pf blood was spilled. She didn't spare anyone. She intended to murder every soul in Asgard, and was on her way to doing so when I brought the ship to liberate them.”
“You did that too?” You asked. Why wasn't he still king? “You know, for a guy who attacked my planet, you sure are some hero.”
Loki preened. “I take my responsibilities to Asgard very seriously. Not always in a straightforward or officially sanctioned way, granted, but sometimes a more obfuscated method is necessary. Sometimes, you have to trick people into doing things that are good for them. And sometimes, that makes you seem like a villain. And sometimes, you think you know how to do something that would be good for everyone, but it turns out you were a bit...overzealous in your efforts, and perhaps it wasn't such a good idea after all. And that can make you a villain as well.
Well, what I'm trying to say is that, both my brother and I have done decidedly villainous things, for reasons we felt were right. So it stands to reason, that we might both be capable of heroic things as well. And while I have not yet shown your planet anything but that villainous face, it is very likely that I eventually will.”
“Oh. Does that mean you've changed your mind about us? Most people think you kinda hate us.”
“I do not hate you.” He shrugged. “Nor your people. I don't think much of humanity, that's true. It's rather hard to, considering your relative briefness. Your constant moving and changing also makes it difficult to keep up, so why bother? Individuals, perhaps, but humanity as a whole? I'm not really interested. However...” He said, acknowledging your scowl with a tilt of the head. “Asgard is now Midgard. And so, to protect Asgard, I must also stand for Midgard. I will protect your mad planet, and you along with it.”
Heat washed across your cheeks. “That's, uh, quite a declaration.”
The two of you continued eating in silence, both ruminating over what Loki had just said. It ran over and over in your head, keeping your face hot. He would protect you, eh? Your whole world. Sure, he'd said it was for Asgard, but he'd made it sound so personal.
And the more magic you learned, the more you could help. If aliens invaded, you could teleport them into space! If robots attacked, you could...teleport them into space! Hey, it was fine to be a one-trick pony, if that one trick always worked.
“So, uh, what do we do next?” You asked. There were comfortable silences, and there were uncomfortable silences. This was beginning to feel like the latter, and you didn't want him to regret what he had said.
“The most important and prolific duty of royalty.” He stated gravely. “Paperwork.”
“Paperwork?”
“Paperwork.” He repeated. “Endless paperwork. That's what royalty is. Beneath all palaces, luxuries, and power, is a foundation of paperwork. I hope your eyes do not tire easily, because I want you to aid me with it. It will help you to understand the people a bit more.”
It made some kind of sense. Knowing what the people needed, or what they considered important enough to contact their most important people about, could tell you a lot about their values.
A small commotion could be heard rising from the kitchen next door; a great deal of laughter, complaints, and exclamations.
“What's that all about?” You wondered.
“Shall we investigate?”
*****
The entire kitchen staff was gathered around a crate, chattering. A tired porter leaned against a chopping table, demolishing some kind of drink.
“The suppliers must have found something unusual this time.” Loki said. “They are mostly wondering what it is, and how they can prepare it.”
“Lemmie see.” You said. “If it's an Earth food, I might know what it is.”
Loki raised his voice over the din, requesting one of the strange foods be handed over for inspection. A green oblong, tightly wrapped in leaves, was presented to you.
You took a single look and burst out laughing in delight. “That's just corn!” You exclaimed.
“You're certain?” He asked. “I've had corn before, you know. It's tiny and yellow.”
“I'm not playing a prank or anything, look.” You stripped back the husks, causing several of the kitchen staff to move back in surprise at the sudden, rubbery sound. You proudly showed everyone the milky white and yellow kernels underneath.
“This grows all around where I live. Miles and miles of it. This is some particularly good stuff. Cook it right, and you will have something fantastic!”
The cook asked something. Loki answered with what you had just said, and the cook asked something else.
“She wants to know how you suggest it be prepared.” Loki said, not bothering to mask his own curiosity.
“Oh boy. Okay, so you take off these outer husks, okay? Put them in the compost, feed them to the animals, whatever. These inner husks you just pull down, but don't tear off. Now you get the silk off, these little strings, you see? That part can get messy. You can compost those too.”
The entire group watched you closely, as Loki translated your instructions, but you were so used to doing this that you could get the silk off in just a few passes.
“Now that you've got the corn clean, and there's no worms or fungus, you can just rub a little butter all over the kernels. Then you pull these husks back up around the corn to hold the moisture in. Cook this just like it is on really high heat, for about half an hour. Once that's done, pull the rest of the husks off, rub on more butter, sprinkle over a bit of salt and pepper, and it's done! It's really, really good that way, and you can cut off the kernels after that, or just eat it right off the cob, if your teeth are good.”
Some of the staff began stripping husks, while the cook thanked you for the information.
“Now, this is sweet corn, and it's only available for a month or so, probably less here in Iceland. Otherwise, you can sometimes find frozen cobs, and canned or frozen kernels. There's also harder, dryer corn, some for popping, and some for grinding into cornmeal. You can make different things from that.”
“I'm looking forward to dinner now.” Loki said, as you headed back to his rooms. “If your taste in corn is anything like your taste in baking, I've much to anticipate.”
“You're very sweet. I got good at that because it was a precious resource during the, uh...Well, the dent corn would keep, but the sweet corn wouldn't. So we ate it in big batches, and we all got pretty good at cooking it. The butter was pretty rare though. Only a few local cows made it through.”
“I see...Does it bother you to eat it?” Loki asked.
“Oh no, not at all. It was one of the only good times in that whole year. Properly cooked corn is amazing, and it was one of the few times I wasn't hungry.”
Loki patted your shoulder gently. “You won't have to worry about that again.”
You felt full.
******
“So why is it that the request for more concrete gets priority over the request for more tile grout?” You asked.
“Tiling is for decoration or waterproofing, and usually only in certain rooms of a building. Concrete has wider applications, and on the tighter budget and time frame we're currently working in, we need to get as much done as possible. So the tile grout will have to wait until winter.”
“What do we do in winter, anyway? I assume the snow is too high for construction.”
“The snow does get very high. Most of the construction workers either work on the interiors of buildings, or they practice their other skills. Winter will be the time when the painters go back to work, the jewelers and smiths go back to full time, the textilers can get a great deal done. Once the construction is done, all those people will go back to their regular jobs. That will be several years though. You and I will be able to pass the hours with study, and of course, ever more paper work.”
He stacked the materials requests neatly in their 'approved' or 'rejected' piles, all of the edges perfectly even.
“Now we have...Ugh, another one of these.” He snorted, annoyed.
“What? What's the deal?”
“The Vinnalings request that I meet with their daughter. I wonder if they mean the widow, or the one who is still practically a child?” Loki said sourly, laying the paper down on the rejected pile. “I'm sure they are both perfectly nice, but I'm not interested in playing favorites among the noble families right now. I'm certainly not interested in being wed to some noble I don't even really know.”
“Is that what it's about?”
“Yes.” His sigh was closer to a groan. “It is irritating. I long ago tired of parents who use their children for political maneuvering. I suppose I won't be able to avoid it forever, but I'm avoiding it for now. And even when I feel ready, I certainly won't be marrying someone who is still in mourning for her husband, nor someone who is still a literal child! Maybe I can't expect love, but I can at least demand someone I can get along with.”
“That's...really sad.” You said, slightly distressed. He sounded so resigned to it. Fear of a loveless, arranged marriage must have been hanging over his head for centuries.
“That's royalty. Part of it. We all dream of a love match, but we know that's tremendously rare. Knowing that it's one more thing my father got to have, that I will not is just so...Well, I've accepted it, I just expected that it would happen to Thor first. I don't know how many of these he gets, but I know they come across my desk far too often.”
“Then ignore them. You're building a kingdom right now, and I think it would be obvious you don't have time for this.” You suggested.
“Oh? Is that official advice?” Loki teased.
“Yup. Look, not to pass judgment on a culture I know very little about, but you guys are way too advanced for something as barbaric as forced marriages. Most of this 'primitive' planet did away with that many years ago.”
Loki quirked a dark, perfect eyebrow. “That is very judgmental. However, I agree with you. And so does Thor, and so did my father. He began phasing such things out a short time before he married my mother, which was probably the driving force behind it. I continued his work during the time I was king, and Thor has expressed his intention to do the same. Thor...also has his reasons. Well, the tradition has only really continued among the noble families.”
“I've never known anyone who was in a miserable relationship, who could also work as effectively as they could when they were in a happy one, or even alone. You have to be as effective as you possibly can be, right? And, you know, if you keep putting it off in favor of building up the city, maybe you and the king can get more laws prohibiting it in place, and neither of you will have to worry about it.”
Loki chuckled. “It's very cute when you try to be conniving. You're so blunt about it. Like an eager child.”
“Hey!” You exclaimed. “I'm trying here!”
“I know you are, and your concern for my future happiness is appreciated. It will likely be many more years before this city is anywhere near done, with all the hurdles we must leap. Look at this one; a request for more supplies for the horses. What do you think?”
“Do it.” You said quickly. “Buildings don't need to eat, and they won't die under bad conditions either.”
“Agreed.” Loki said. “Good to know we are in accordance on that as well.”
“What kind of hurdles are you talking about anyway? Enough housing for everybody, right?”
“Yes, and adapting to the extreme weather of Earth, the unfamiliar flora and fauna. The culture shock from outside, the culture war from inside. Convincing humanity that we have a place here, convincing Asgardians that we must find a place here. The inevitable consequences of humans and Asgardians intermingling. The rebuilding of our technology, our prosperity. Learning the technology of Earth. Preserving our culture without rejecting outside influence. Adapting our culture as to not cause undue conflict. Not isolating ourselves entirely. How to relate to the incredible diversity of humankind.”
“Geez.”
“Those are all big picture items, that will likely take several human generations to achieve. But we will achieve them. We must. Your presence here with speed some of this along, I believe. When the people see your accomplishments, see that you are not the primitive savage that some Asgardians fear humans are, then they will learn to accept. Your coming here was most fortuitous.”
You snorted. “What's fortuitous? You spirited me away!”
“Are you still angry?” He asked.
“...No. I'm okay now. I just hope I can live up to all the faith you've put in me.”
Loki shuffled through a few more papers. “That's the thing about advice. If I feel you are very wrong about something, I can just ignore you.”
“Rude.” You mumbled. Loki smirked, but the expression faltered as he looked over the next paper. “What? What is it? Another date request?”
“The trial will be conducted in two weeks.” Loki said. “Both you and I are to be there to give testimony.”
You shivered. “Oh.” You really, really wanted to get all of that behind you, but you also really didn't want to be in that murderer's presence ever again. Loki placed his hand on your arm.
“Do not fear. He is powerless now. This will be the last time anyone ever has to see him. He will go to prison, and he will be forgotten. You will never have to waste a thought on him after this.”
You knew you would though.

Can Lying Be Good Analysis
SPOILERS
• When Deceit shows up Thomas is very startled. He reacts much the way he used to react when Anxiety popped up. He does not know it’s not Morality but he is suddenly scared. I’m not sure this means anything other than Deceit doesn’t announce himself like Patton does but I think it’s worth noting.
• He also says “Papa’s in the House” which while he doesn’t realize it’s untrue, it’s untrue.
• “Guess who has ten fingers and is very confused? This guy! Heh heh I’m silly like that.” Liar liar pants on fire. He’s not confused or sill and he’s certainly not Patton.
• Roman immediately apologizes to Virgil for calling him Charlie frown, he’s doing so well.
• “Oh good, Logan, everyone’s favorite character!” GUYS MY HEART!!! He says this cause it’s a lie. This is one of his insults that’s backhanded because of who he is and Logan is honestly pleased by this and thinks it’s a genuine compliment. Ouch.
• In loo of Patton Virgil is the moral compass. He’s the one telling Thomas not to lie to Joan cause it’s wrong, Logan is indifferent, Roman wants to lie.
• also can we just? We had a Virgil went missing episode, then a Logan went missing episode, then a Morality (secretly) went missing episode. Is Roman next?
• “Well you’ll have no trouble at all explaining that to them.” Is this a lie? Does he believe it? Can he tell truths? It’s about the future so can it be considered a lie or a truth or is that a gray area.
• Virgil is displeased
•F WORD FACE guys HELP I’m dying that’s hilarious
• Logan’s wise eyes and soft Ooooh when he realizes Thomas wants to lie. He doesn’t tell Thomas it’s wrong, he knows that’s not his job, but he is surprised and doesn’t seem happy about it.
• So I looked into Kant some. The story is actually from Kant and not Plato. Kant believed that Morality is based in reason. It’s trying to do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing, and not as a means to achieve an end that benefits you or others. Saving your friend is what most of us would view is the right thing, but according to Kant, the result of your actions don’t make them right if they would be wrong in other circumstances. Morality is based on reason and truth not lies and manipulation. Interestingly though many people believe that according to Kant’s philosophy you simply could not lie to the murderer, so if you were to say “I will not tell you that because I want to protect this person and I believe you will kill them” then that is not a lie, that is the truth. You are not manipulating their reality, or using them as a means to accomplish your ends. I think Deceit knew all of this but he left it out. I this was a lie of omission.
• I also find it very interesting that it was Kant that Thomas and Joan chose because Kant believes all Morality is based in reason, also known as Logic. I’ll make a separate post for this though cause I want to really get into that on its own.
• Deceit’s rant about Kant is in direct opposition to Patton’s short and factually incorrect statement about Plato and that speaks volumes about them as characters. Deceit usesfancy names and technicalities to manipulate the others while Patton finds the content of the story is more important to his point, and then makes jokes about eating play dough.
• Logan is impressed but also confused. I think he suspects something is off at this point.
• “Well I’m Morality I gotta know my stuff.” No you’re not and that’s not his job anyway, another lie.
• “Impressed isn’t the word I’d use.” Virgil still thinks this is Patton and he’s really disappointed in his friend.
• “The point is many people think Kant is just a bit idealistic.” By this he means many people think Kant was an amoral piece of shit with no regard for the consequences of his actions. Do understatements count as lies?
• “Patton I thought you said Lying was wrong” “well it’s all about your priorities friendo. What’s more important to us, Joan’s feelings or honesty?” I once saw a post on here that said if somebody ever tells you you only have two choices, it’s a lie. It’s a lie and they want you to forget about the other choices. If somebody tells you you can have an apple or an orange they want you to forget you can have and apple or an orange, or both, or neither, or a banana. There’s never just two choices and deceit isn’t just deceit is manipulation.
• when Logan says “see I know things too.” He feels threatened when people know more than him.
• “I can’t lie to Joan.” “Detailed instructions of how to lie to Joan.” Me though.
• Roman breaking the fourth wall about the shapeshifting thing.
“Maybe if you’re considering lying to Joan you deserve to be punished.” Virgil is like. Harsh. He’s really protective of Thomas’s friends. Even from Thomas.
• “Strategy” for lying to Joan. I don’t think Logan can really like this but he’s respecting Thomas’ decisions anyway because hours not his job to ask question moral decisions.
• “DWI” “Driving While Intoxicated” guys I’m crying this is so funny I can’t
• Logan says no so soft and he looks at the back of the card before he tells Roman the real definition because hes unsure and he’s scared of being wrong.
• “Aww Pwease! Right? You know how I love cartoons?” This an attempt to appear more like morality and assign a reason to take the job Roman really wants which real Patton wouldnt do.
• “you were a mistake” Roman wtf.
• “Doctor Who reference? Fantastic.” Clever and borders on word association. Nice.
• “Roman, that was a beautiful portrayal of a mother betrayed by her son.” It was terrible and Roman just let’s this snake man fool him. Smh.
• “Logan does Thomas have that information?” “No he doesn’t.” My serious son takes this serious question seriously.
• A homeless lady ate it.
• Let👋 Virgil👋 say👋fuck👋!!!!!! Kidding don’t ever.
• I will always find Logan teaching things extremely comforting. Logan is comforting. This is going to be a video I watch when I have a bad day because it has Logan teaching us things.
• “We should makes point to actually feed the homeless later” “totally” wow. He doesn’t agree at all. He doesn’t think they should try to feed the homeless he thinks they should just lie about feeding the homeless.
• Virgil: “what if mom found out”
Logan: “According to Romans portrayal probably some kind of betrayal driven disownment.”
Virgil: “WHAT?!?!?!?!?!”
This is funny because Logan I think is attempting to make a negative remark about Roman’s portrayal of Thomas’ mom but Virgil takes it very seriously and considers it as a real possibility because Logan said it and now he’s afraid.
• “Action! That’s not just for movies!” Maybe he can’t stop talking until he’s told a lie.
• Virgil’s booing.
• Virgil saying nice to the idea of working at hot topic
• “Drama Terg” Deceit does not once refer to any one of them as kiddo.
• Roman feels off after the Lying to get out of work scene and he looks to Patton hoping that, as morality, Patton will put a stop to all this, or reassure him. Deceit isn’t Patton so he doesn’t.
• Virgil is appalled Patton isn’t upset by this.
• Patton is pleased during the case scene.
• Roman announces he’s feeling icky. He’s bad at describing emotions and understanding them too I think. We get descriptions like “icky” or “Bittery Jittery and not very Glittery” when he’s upset.
• “Everyone knows where babies come from. Messenger Falcons.” An attempt at behaving like Patton or a lie for the sake of lying? It’s poorly executed if it’s a Patton imitation. Patton doesn’t believe he knows and he thinks “Storks are involved”, storks are not messenger falcons. No one in the history of the world has ever suggested messenger falcons deliver babies that’s preposterous.
• “And stopping again, Thomas I didn’t believe any of that.” A truth? Or was there a very small part he did believe.
• Roman gets really upset and puts this energy into freaking out over a soppy cup prop.
• Virgil is so ready to be done he completely misinterprets Roman.
• These nerds and their love of the classical arts poetry geeks logince someone write an au dammit.
• “Thomas, you don’t want to make Joan mad at you do you?” Manipulative bastard.
• “Could you stand to lose the support of one of Thomas’ friends?” Playing on Virgil’s insecurity that Thomas’ friends will leave them.
• can we just. Virgil. We’ve talked about Patton probably being scary when angry but not Virgil. We haven’t actually seen Virgil Angry up until now. Mildly annoyed? Concerned? Disappointed? Afraid? Yes. But not genuine anger. Here we see a glimpse and he’s holding back because it’s Patton. Never be on the wrong end of an angry Virgil he’ll kill you with one look.
• “Virgil? it’s me. Aren’t we friends?” “I’m not so sure we are.” I’m pretty sure he still thinks this is Patton. Which means this is a really powerful moment for Virgil. Patton was the first person to really value him in the mind palace and treat him as a friend and an equal. He considers Patton his best friend. This is Virgil, standing his ground even if it means giving up almost all the progress he’s made with the others to do the right thing. It takes great courage to stand up to ones enemies. And a great deal more to stand up to ones friends.
• Deceit realized no part of Thomas is going to budge and he gets desperate.
• “I know what I said, it doesn’t matter, in this situation it’s the right thing to do, period.” His voice starts to chance here it’s nasally.
• he practically shreiks “Yes”
• he drops the act and you can see it visibly the moment he gave up Thomas is such a good actor.
• “wow I’m so proud of you Thomas you’re so mature.” He doesn’t care if Thomas notices somethings off now.
• “I knew something was off” he knew something was off but not what was off. He really didn’t know that wasn’t Patton.
• Logan thinks it’s obvious he figured it out a while ago but didn’t say anything. Probably because he knew he couldn’t. Though he does try to say it here. I really wonder what point he figured it out.
• my sweet oblivious prince.
• “oooh I don’t know either Thomas you might not like what you find.” So Deceit lies to Thomas about himself to keep Thomas happy right? But here he doesn’t care about concealing himself and seems to be goading Thomas so he’ll ask. So he’s lashing out at Thomas because he’s angry Thomas didn’t go with his plan.
• Logan says Deceit much the same way he says Falsehood.
• “Did you just finish washing some dishes?” “Yesss” Deceit seems to take a lot of joy in this specific lie which I find very very funny.
• “Oh, you are, Thomas. You are a good person. Everybody says so.” Daaaaaaamn.
• The exchange between Logan and Deceit. I got chills.
• I am and always have been Patton muahahaha
• the other three are so done with his bs but Thomas is genuinely terrified
• okay but it would be an interesting idea if Deceit has been Morality the whole time. Awful and angsty, but interesting.
• “ow that Hurt, I mean that didn’t hurt me at all ow” he can tell truths, but does he have to tell lies?
• we’ll see him again and I’m looking forward to it. Every story needs a good old fashioned villain.
• Virgil is so happy to hear Patton’s dad jokes again he doesn’t hide his smiles.
• The eating play dough thing has me cracking up but especially the part where Logan was confused and he thought Patton meant he was eating the ancient and very dead philosopher Plato.
• Roman is adorable and he’s a knight and a hero I love him.
End of Analysis thanks for reading.

Rev:Ch1 is a brand new mod for the Binding of Isaac. Featuring: - a divergent Basement path to a new floor with special mechanics - 8 new unique bosses - Dozens of brand new enemies - Over 20 new items - 1 new playable character - Plus, an optional challenging new peril. Enter the Glacier. A frosty welcome awaits Isaac as he braves the frozen chambers of the Glacier. Ice is prevelant, so he best watch his step lest he slide into incoming foes. Many rooms are exposed to freezing blizzards which chill him, making the simplest of movements tough. But, fear not: warmth is always within reach for those who look for it. Terrifying new threats lurk in every cold corner of the floor. How will you handle Stalagmight, eternally trapped in ice with only his raging temper to keep him company. Or, the lonely Freezerburn, so desperate for a hug. Face old friends now lost and broken, adapted with new forms to survive the ever-chilly climate. Monsnow and Flurry Jr, to name a few. Brave it all and face a new threat that's eerily familiar... Dress up as Sarah, the Loved. Strong of faith, but broken and unable to hold onto her heart. --------- The Binding of Isaac: Revelations is a chapter-based mod. Each additional chapter will expand with a new floor with 3 chapters planned, culminating in a fully alternate path. This mod is entirely additive, designed to be bolted onto any player's run and simply accessed when prefered. We have not modified the core game in anyway beyond adding 25 more items to the pool and an extra core path boss. Glacier, and all additional planned floors, are purely optional. --------- We very strongly recommend disabling other mods for your first Revelations runs. Running additional mods may cause compatibility issues, however we will be addressing these in post-patch updates. - Champion forms of each boss. These unlock once you've killed each boss once, and have their own unique look and very unique mechanics, while retaining the initial flavour of the original line up.
- 3 New Enemies. Yellow Snow, Stalagtrite and Ice Worms, along with a bunch of new rooms to take advantage of these chilly fellas.
- 1 New Item. Lil Frost Rider. A feisty little customer inspired by one of our favourite bosses from chapter 1.
- In addition to this, Narcissus has had some heavy rebalancing, optimisation and new active items added to his attacks. With some extra reskins for vanilla enemies that find their way into Glacier, with some greed waves thrown in for good measure. Along with various bug fixes for a number of issues affecting the mod in general.
- And last but not least, a little treat for anyone interested in chapter 2: Tomb. The splash art featuring all the bosses, and the new playable character.

The Binding Of Isaac Revelations Chapter 2 Free Download
Indeed! there are a lot of mods I want to try, but I want to finish the game normally first. After that, the good stuff will ensue!
Love the concept of the mod, and enjoyed playing it too. The only problem I have with it is when I fought the new harbinger-guy (forgot his name ), after some time he stopped moving, and when I killed him the flys he spawned in ice could not be destroyed (destroying the run). Other than that, I really like this mod.

(PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS) intro, rules, guidelines, advice, and other info!
hi! on this blog, you can call me avery! (he/him only please)
i need more practice with my pendulum, so on this blog, i’ll be answering questions for free!
i’d call myself an amateur, even though it’s been a full year since i’ve started practicing witchcraft and divining.
this blog is exclusively for pendulum readings, but...if you want to pick my brain or something, you can ask me about stuff i like or what not. like, what my favorite pokemon is.
info
I answer questions privately! just make sure you have a blog, and specify that you want your question answered privately! it’s okay if you want to be vague, but i highly suggest sending in asks that are at least a little detailed; i believe my pendulum has an easier time answering questions accurately if given enough information, but, you do you!
you can ask test questions (aka, questions you already know the answer to) if you feel it’s necessary.
I will probably be closing my askbox once a certain number of asks in my inbox has been hit. Once my askbox closes, I will answer all the questions in my askbox. Then, I will open it back up again, and so on and so forth. i’ll make sure everyone knows whether my askbox is closed or open in my blogs description.
PLEASE do not accept all of my readings as fact, especially considering i have only opened this blog for practice. as many other readers have said, take the answers with grains of salt. this doesn’t necessarily mean my answers are incorrect though, things are constantly changing, and something that could’ve been a yes answer one minute might be a no answer the next minute. regardless, you can still change the outcome of things! things are never in stone, and this applies to the answers you get from me.
If i’m uncomfortable with the question you asked me, I wont answer it. Whatever things i’ve realized I’m not okay with answering will be placed in the rules section accordingly.
I intend on answering questions as soon as i can, but this does not mean I will always answer your questions immediately.
rules
1. only 4 questions per ask. you can send in more than one ask, follow up questions, and rephrased versions of previous questions; i’m just asking you limit your questions to four per ask for the sake of ...uh, no clutter?
2. NO sexual questions. I’m a minor. and if i wasn’t, i still wouldn’t want to answer any sexual or nsfw questions. please find someone else to answer questions like those for you.
3. please don’t ask me any questions related to anything that would need to be “diagnosed.” if you need to self-diagnose, just do your research, do some self-introspection, and trust yourself. you know yourself best! you don’t need me to help you with this kind of thing!
4. As long as your questions meet the above criteria, you can ask me anything! Also, I’m otherkin and fictionkin, so, if you have any questions related to past lives or canons that you need me to answer, i’m your man.
guidelines and advice
if you’re going to be a recurring asker, i suggest you end your asks with a signature or pseudonym. You don’t have to tell me your name or anything - unless you want to? If you give me a pseudonym or nickname, i’ll start tagging your posts with the nickname so you can find the questions i have answered for you that are public more easily!
i HIGHLY suggest you give me feedback if possible. like i stated previously, I am doing this mostly for practice, and I wont be able to know whether or not i’m doing a good job if you dont tell me how i did. Of course, you don’t have to give me feedback as soon as i answer your ask; you can wait as long as necessary until you know for certain whether or not my responses were correct, or just send in an ask saying whether or not my responses resonated with you or felt correct to you at all.
If you find that you need my assistance more often than i am able to provide, I suggest you look into picking up divination and a pendulum yourself! i promise it’s not as hard as it looks; just a quick google search or search on tumblr itself can get you started! I’ll also update this section later with resources i’ve used myself in the past for those of you who are looking to become pendulum users yourselves. you can also ask me how i use my pendulum; i’ll be making a page detailing how i use mine later.
Looks like you’ve made it to the end of my post, congrats! sorry if it was needlessly lengthy or redundant at all, I’m stupid and not good at making things brief and to the point. as a reward, here’s an epic song.
hope to see you in my askbox soon! avery, teleport!

Hello my name is Nina, I’m from the U.S. and I age 13 -14.
2. Appearance?
I don't have a good drawing of me, so ill be short and descriptive. I’m 5′3 (in feet) with long brown hair (I'm a girl so there’s that too) and hazel eyes. I got brown freckles and braces, pretty simple person but eh, its me.
3. Hobbies?
I play soccer and watch hockey, drawing a small bit, video games (yes), talking with friends, reading, being weird and watching YouTube! (I actually have more but shhhh)
4. What is your dream job?
Well I have a idea of what I want to do like with getting into editing and also acting (aka I'm a theatre nerd as well), but I'm just trying to make it to high school atm.
5. What kind of shit would we find in your bag?
Oh god. Well my inhaler (most the time), markers, pens, pencils, my notebook, a jacket, headphones (broken ear pods), and more random stuff, depends on the day really. (don't forget about school work)
6.How would you describe Jack’s channel?
Oh. Honestly it keeps getting better and better, even if stuff has changed majorly, it just feels nothing has changed in Jack’s way of entertaining his way. He’s kept what keeps him him and that's honestly the best. Over course there’s more to say but I’ll keep it short and simple. I love Jack and that's that.
7. When did you find Jack’s channel?
It’s been so long I forget tbh. I’ve been in and out so many times for reasons (not because of him, family etc.) but I’ve never fully be OUT of his channel. I first found him before 1 million, and in January of this year I stuck into his channel fully!
8. Put in order your top 3 Egos!
1. Anti
2.Scheep
3. Dapper (tbh his super cool and ahh-)
Well there’s that, it’s honestly super hard to pick but I did it
9.Favorite/ most nostalgic video/series of Jack’s video?
Oh god this is the hardest question... How do you choose? Like I have so many favorites I could watch over and over again... but off the top of my head Observer was a great series to watch along with The Escapists and PUBG (there’s too many help!). For nostalgia tho, Happy Wheels has to win as most but there’s also a bunch more I can’t name, but like oof I love them.
10. Would you describe yourself as an active member or quiet member of the community?
I’d say I'm pretty active but that all depend, I’d love to be more active and run (or run with someone) a blog just for all this stuff but I like being a spam, whoops. I do make art (I need to post more) and my notebook full of theories, thoughts, and ideas is a think I keep on my at all times.
But yeah! Hope some people enjoy my little “interview” of sorts lmao. Ima just tag a few people to do this because why not, and if I tag you and you have, sorry about that I'm dumb. @ego-protection-squad @ego-surveillance-squad @thedarkenedkeeper and @incorrect-anti-quotes

Transcript of The Talk Show Episode 3
Title: Email, Spam Filtering, Digital Photography
Hosts: John Gruber, Dan Benjamin
Release date: 17 July 2007
Description: We discuss John’s obsession with spam, and spam filtering techniques, and broach the subject of digital photography.
Dan Benjamin: You were obsessed with the iPhone, you got the iPhone, and now you’re obsessed with email on the iPhone, specifically we’re talking about spam. So somebody like you, you get a lot of spam. A lot of spam.
John Gruber: And you don’t?
Benjamin: I get a little bit. I don’t get — I mean, I guess the encoder may have helped because where I have publicized the email address, it’s been encoded, so it helped a little. But I mean, I still get a decent amount. Nowhere near what you get, I’m sure.
Gruber: I think I get around 500 or 600 spams a day.
Benjamin: A day? Oh my gosh.
Gruber: It depends. Somewhere between 300 and 600 typically.
Benjamin: I don’t get anywhere near that many. So what was your solution to handle this?
Gruber: Well, we should say what the problem is.
Benjamin: What is the problem?
Gruber: The problem is that for years I’ve relied on client-side spam filtering with C-Command’s SpamSieve, which is a Macintosh program, it integrates with every Macintosh email program that I know of.
Benjamin: The best, I think, easily the best client-side anti-spam application that exists for the Mac. They should be a sponsor of this show.
Gruber: Well, everybody should be a sponsor of this show. Who shouldn’t sponsor, who wouldn’t want to sponsor this show?
Benjamin: I can’t think of a single company that wouldn’t benefit from that. That’s kind of silly.
Gruber: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I can’t think of one either.
Benjamin: But of all of them right now, I think SpamSieve should be the number one guy on the phone. When we put this out there, the phone better ring. That’s all I have to say.
Gruber: [laughs]
Benjamin: But go on, go on. All Mac clients...
Gruber: For years I’ve managed it and it’s — how much spam I get hasn’t really been a problem because SpamSieve’s been running at somewhere around 99.8 or 99.9 percent accuracy for years for me, literally, I think since 2003 or something like that. But the problem is, because it’s client-side, the spam filtering happens, your client checks for mail, and before mail gets into your inbox, it passes it off to SpamSieve, and SpamSieve says “good”, “good”, “bad”, “bad”, “bad”, “bad”, “bad”. So when you check mail with your iPhone, without any kind of server-side spam filtering, all the spam is still there in the inbox, which for me would literally be hundreds of spams a day. It would honestly make using the iPhone for checking my email impossible. So the obvious option would be to — if you wanted to just do the simplest thing possible — would be to just set up a computer with SpamSieve on it and have it check mail continuously, never go to sleep. That doesn’t really work for me because my only computer that I use is a laptop, which I take with me places, so it’s often sleeping. I do put it to sleep at night. In theory, I wouldn’t necessarily mind leaving it running all night, but when I’m actually taking the notebook with me, or I’m traveling, I’m in an airport, and it’s in my backpack — that’s not feasible. So I could set up an old computer here in my home office and have it set up to run SpamSieve continuously, but that seems wasteful to me to have an entire — my own computer set up just for — my own personal spam filtering computer.
Benjamin: So what are the other solutions? You came up with one, a free one, that’s actually kind of — I think it’s interesting, it’s a neat idea, but I think it’s just a cut above having your own dedicated Mac in a corner running SpamSieve all the time.
Gruber: Right. So what I’m doing is — what I’ve long done is set up my email so that all of the addresses I use are really forwarders to another account that’s using an address that I never publicize, never give anyone, just to have the flexibility that I could redirect the mail somewhere else before it goes to that mailbox, and then I just set a Reply-To: header so that the mail that I send looks like it’s coming from the forwarding address. So what I did is I changed all the email addresses I use to point to Gmail accounts and then back to — so it goes from a forwarder at my domain, the address I want at daringfireball.net, goes to Gmail. Gmail is set to automatically forward back to my real mailbox name at daringfireball.net. And a lot of people, a lot of the stuff I’ve read said Gmail spam filtering is pretty accurate, and my results after doing it for about a week is that, yeah, it’s really, really good. It catches at least 99 percent of all spam. And more importantly, it doesn’t catch false positives, it doesn’t flag good mail as spam. Funnily enough, the two messages that it did that I caught just by looking through the Gmail spam mailbox were from you.
Benjamin: [laughs] That’s great.
Gruber: But one thing you can do is you can upload your contacts, your address book, export it to a comma-separated value file, upload it to Gmail, and it will automatically whitelist anybody in your address book. Now, the downside of that is that one time only you can upload a file, it doesn’t automatically — there’s no way to sync it. But so far, after a week, it’s a very good solution.
Benjamin: Well, that’s actually — it’s a neat idea, I think it’s a great idea if you already have your email set up, if you’re already doing the forwarding thing. I have a few aliases that I use, but I try to limit that. So the company that I use for my email services is Webmail.us, they’re great, and I like having things hosted there just because if I decide to switch hosting companies or if I have multiple domains or whatever, it’s — and I think it’s like $10–12 a month for pretty much as many email addresses as you’d ever want. Yeah, I mean, you can get free email hosting, and you can do the Gmail thing, which I’ve tried, it just never really worked for me. I don’t like using a web application as my primary email client. I tried it, I couldn’t get used to it.
Gruber: But that’s the thing with Gmail, I actually don’t use it.
Benjamin: You’re just using the forwarding, purely forwarding. But for me, what I like — Webmail actually has a really, really good, in-built spam filtering process that’s very customizable, you can have it put it into a separate spam folder, you can have it preface the subject line with “spam”, there’s all kinds of things that you can do and it’s sort of built in. I still am using SpamSieve, but I turned on this spam filtering option for the times when I knew I’d be checking with the iPhone to see how it would do, and it’s actually done a really, really good job. But I mean, this is to me, I think the people who are in the job of doing spam filtering should be thrilled about the iPhone.
Gruber: Oh, definitely.
Benjamin: Because more than any device I think it necessitates the fact — now you have to have spam filtering. And I don’t really anticipate that Apple’s going to put spam filtering into the iPhone mail app. That doesn’t seem like their priority.
Gruber: No, I don’t think so either. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened. Obviously, the desktop mail client has junk filtering. But I’ve never been particularly impressed — and I only recently switched to Mail, so I can’t say that I really tested it extensively, but I have tried it.
Benjamin: It’s nowhere near as good as SpamSieve. It doesn’t even get close. It does okay for the most obvious spams, and it has a lot of incorrect positives where it tags things that aren’t —
Gruber: That’s what I always found was that even when — I think there’s an option to say, you know, “people in my” — I guess what the problem was, it was often catching — because I get a lot of email from readers who aren’t in my address book, and it would often catch — because I’ve tried using mail for IMAP before for some of my email, and I never thought that the built-in junk filtering in Mail was accurate enough. The one thing I really wish that the iPhone mail client supported that it doesn’t, is flagging.
Benjamin: Yeah. I saw that tweet and I commented on that. To me that was something that it didn’t occur to me until I was actually really using the iPhone for email, when I was spending more than just — I wonder if I got a new email, oh yeah, okay — but actually using it as a device to read and reply to email for more than a few minutes, that was the first thing that occurred to me. Because I flag email all the time that I want to — something I want to come back to, something I need to respond to, but I can’t get to it right now, or I need to investigate it before I can answer. And not having — that’s a huge, huge thing on the wish list right now. I think a lot of people have to be feeling that way.
Gruber: I love the idea of flagging because it’s one of those things where it’s like the 80/20 rule, where the simplest possible thing goes 80 percent of the way to solving what you need. Because you can always say, well, maybe you want some kind of full — you want labels, or tagging, or all sorts of stuff that you could do with messaging to say, this message is part of the project, I want to put tags on it, blah blah blah. Really though, just a simple flag, which is supported on a lot of IMAP clients, to say “This message is flagged”. At least from the iPhone’s perspective where you really can’t add a lot of stuff like tagging, and full labeling interface really wouldn’t fit in with the minimalist UI. Flagging really would. The way that you can mark a read message unread, there’s like a little hide/unhide details, and then there’s a thing you click that when you’ve read a message, you can mark it back to unread. Right there, I would love it if in addition to being able to mark it read, if you could mark it flagged. And when you hide that, you wouldn’t even have to see it. But the reason I need it, here’s typically — when I read email on the iPhone, there’s messages that I’m done with, that I can either respond to or just leave it marked as read because I don’t ever need to see it again, but then there’s a lot of times I’ll get messages where I can’t deal with it now because I’m on my iPhone. Because maybe I need to write a real reply, so it’s going to wait until I go back and I have my real keyboard and a real mail client. Maybe it’s because it’s something that requires me to do a lot of work on. Something I need to come back to. But I’ve already read it. So what I have to do now is mark it unread, so I know I’ll come back to it. But that’s sort of abusing unread.
Benjamin: So we need that. We’ve got to have that.
Gruber: Right, because I like to use unread to mean new.
Benjamin: Unread means “I haven’t seen this”. There’s one more topic I want to talk to you about. And I think the best way to bring it up is to completely change subjects and start talking about what you were doing in San Francisco that was weird. I liked it, I thought it was cool, but it was pretty weird. You would take your... [a noise is heard in the background] I don’t know if you guys can hear this, do you hear the thunder in the background here? [rain drums in the background]
Gruber: I thought that was your dog.
Benjamin: I don’t know if it’s going to come through on the mic, but I mean, it is crazy storming out here.
Gruber: Yeah, it did.
Benjamin: Another thing we need to do once we have a real website is we need to have a section for links, things that we talk about. [loud thunder in the background] Could you hear that?
Gruber: Yeah, I could.
Benjamin: So that I could, like, link the picture of what I’m seeing outside the window. It’s torrential, it’s like — Noah saw something almost like this. Anyway, so we’re in San Francisco and we’re hanging out, we go to these different places, and you’d pull this little camera out of your pocket, and you’d put it on top of your beer glass, and you’d have this weird look on your face, you’re sort of staring at whoever you’re trying to take a picture of, but you looked really creepy when you were doing it, and then the camera would kind of — I guess it would go into an autofocus sort of mode where it would try to gauge the right focus and everything, and it would flash the light repeatedly really, really fast, sort of blinding the person. And some of the pictures actually came out pretty good when you were doing that. But the reason I mention this, you’ve taken some really cool pictures with this new camera that you’re using, and it was sort of a disappointment to me to see you switch to this new camera after you’ve been using the Canon Digital Rebel for so long. Right after I get my Digital Rebel, you show up with this little — was it a Ricoh, is that how you say it?
Gruber: Right, a Ricoh — actually, I’m not 100 percent sure if it’s R[i]coh or R[ai]coh, I don’t know. I think it’s R[i]coh, I always say R[i]coh.
Benjamin: “Ricoh” like “vista”.
Gruber: Right. Ricoh GR Digital.
Benjamin: And it does an awesome job, and I’ll see one of these pictures, and I’m new to the digital SLR world, you’ve given me a lot of great advice about — you and James Duncan Davidson and a couple of other people guided me on lens purchases and stuff. So as soon as I go out, I get the camera, I get a couple cool lenses, now in my mind I’m thinking, okay, how do I take that kind of picture. So I’ll look at the picture, I’ll click the “More settings”, and I’ll learn, oh, this is the kind of lens he used, this is what the aperture was. And now you’re walking around with this Ricoh camera, which is irrelevant to what I’m doing. What’s up with that?
Gruber: Well, it’s a point-and-shoot, so the difference is that I can put it in my pocket as opposed to an SLR. But Ricoh is a Japanese company, I don’t know, are there any camera companies that aren’t Japanese? But they don’t really have a North American presence, they don’t officially have any kind of North American retail presence because they sort of see the North American market as being obsessed with things like how many megapixels and what length the zoom is on the lens, you know, people just go into Best Buy and pick the camera with the most megapixels and most zoom in the lens.
Benjamin: Didn’t you order this one from overseas too?
Gruber: Well, I didn’t get it overseas, I got it from a place called Popflash, which is a camera reseller. I guess they call themselves a camera broker where they sell cameras that aren’t officially sold in North America. There’s another place called Adorama in New York that sells the Ricoh GR or other Ricoh cameras. But the thing with the Ricoh, and people are always so surprised when they hear it, it’s $600, it’s a $600 point-and-shoot.
Benjamin: That’s essentially almost the same price as getting a Digital Rebel XTi body.
Gruber: Right, pretty much. And they say, well, how much zoom does it have? And the answer is none, it’s just a fixed length, 28 mm lens. And people are like, “Well, why would you spend $600 on a camera that doesn’t even have a zoom?” And it’s like, because a non-zoom, a prime lens has better... [a phone rings loudly] What the hell is that? Jesus.
Benjamin: That’s my iPhone. [laughs] Hold on.
Gruber: [laughs]
Benjamin: [on the phone] Hello?
Gruber: Patch ’em in!
Benjamin: [on the phone] What time do you guys close?
Gruber: Ask them if they want to sponsor a podcast.
Benjamin: [on the phone] All right, I’ll be there, thank you. [to Gruber] Hey, John, my glasses are ready.
Gruber: Excellent.
Benjamin: My new glasses. I’m very excited. All right, please continue with what you were saying. I’m not going to edit that out. No editing.
Gruber: Oh, why would you want to edit that.
Benjamin: Did you hear that ring? See, that’s one of the things I like about the iPhone, yeah, you can’t use any sound that you want for your ringer, but you can pick a really cool sound that will not only go through the entire house and be heard anywhere but would scare the crap out of you in the process.
Gruber: You use the old-fashioned phone ringer. I’ve kept mine on Marimba. Because I want people to know I have an iPhone.
Benjamin: [laughs] Right.
Gruber: Hey, do you do the thing where you assign different people their own custom ringtones?
Benjamin: Can you do that on the iPhone?
Gruber: Yeah, you just go into contacts and assign a ringtone.
Benjamin: Oh, I’m going to do that now.
Gruber: Or maybe you go into ringtones and assign to contact. I think you do it by going into the ringtones and you can say “Assign to contact”.
Benjamin: I’m going to do that. I haven’t done that, but I will do, and I’ll assign Marimba to you. So, continue.
Gruber: But anyway, learning everything there is to know about photography is an enormous amount of work, and I certainly only know a very, very small amount of it. But it’s another instance of the 80/20 rule where you can learn the 80 percent of the basics, the fundamentals of photography very, very — it’s all very simple. You really can learn it very quickly, and then the other 20 percent will take you forever, and it requires, like, an encyclopedia.
Benjamin: So you’re saying, you can go and drop $600, get a 28 mm point-and-shoot from overseas, put it on a beer glass in a pitch black restaurant, and take some good pictures?
Gruber: Well, one of the advantages to a fixed, a prime lens, a lens that doesn’t zoom, is that typically it has better optical quality. It’s sharper, it gets better color saturation, and often it’s faster, faster meaning that it works with less light.
Benjamin: You can still take a decent picture inside without a full sun.
Gruber: Right. I almost never shoot with a flash. Even to the point where I end up not being able to even get an exposure.
Benjamin: You’d rather not take a picture at all as opposed to taking one of those deer-in-the-headlights, washed out, ghoulish-looking flash pictures?
Gruber: Right, because really to take a good-looking flash picture you need a real flash, an expensive external flash that gets mounted on top of the camera, and you need to know how to do things like bounce it off the ceiling.
Benjamin: When I was speaking at Rails conference, there were all these strobes going off, flashing all over the ceiling, and afterwards I asked Duncan about it and he’s like, “Yeah, yeah, that’s how I use the flash”, because he had this elaborate rig set up so that the flash never actually — it was always indirect light.
Gruber: So, like, Duncan with a very, very nice and very expensive equipment can take tremendously, just beautiful photographs that are actually lit by flash or partially lit by flash. But using the on-camera flash, even on an SLR, it’s almost always going to look bad. So I just try to do whatever I can not to. So resting the camera on something like a glass or resting it on the table, it’s just a way to keep — if there’s not enough light to take a long exposure, if the camera is going to — if you have to take a long exposure, if it’s going to be opened for a fifteenth of a second or a twentieth of a second, which is too long to hold the camera steady by hand, do something to stabilize the camera.
Benjamin: It was pretty weird. But it was neat, it was kind of neat. I mean, you looked really crazy when you were doing it, you’d look really suspicious when you were doing it. I mean, it’s all right, I’m just pointing that out.
Gruber: I don’t think it looks nearly as suspicious as if I tried doing it with an SLR-sized camera.
Benjamin: [laughs] Right. And for the record, you’ve given me a lot of advice about the lenses to get, and I have two of the same lenses that you have. A 50 mm one, a 28 mm, same two type lenses that you have. Another friend of mine has a 35 mm. I’ve seen his pictures, it’s taken some great pictures. Both of them are prime lenses, meaning they don’t zoom. And it’s great because in a way it forces you to rethink what you’re used to. Instead of just being able to zoom in on something or zoom back from something, you actually have to sometimes physically change your relationship to whatever you’re taking a picture of. So I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting where I’ll take a picture of something with a 50 mm then I’ll pop the other lens on without really changing where I am, and you’ll get a completely different kind of picture. It’s really cool. We could talk an entire show, I think, about just this.
Gruber: Here’s one simple, basic rule of thumb. And of course, there’s dozens of exceptions and there are scenarios where it doesn’t apply, but just as a basic rule of thumb for someone who’s learning to take pictures, just wants to take better pictures, is an amateur. The closer you are to what you’re trying to photograph, the better. So in terms of using a fixed lens, a prime lens that doesn’t have a zoom, you say, well, what if I want to make it bigger? Well, just get closer. And it’s almost always possible to get closer, especially if you’re shooting people. Obviously, if you’re at the zoo and you want to take a picture of a lion, yeah, there’s only so close you can get, and you want to have a nice long focal length lens, something with the zoom, or a 300 mm lens, or something like that. But for just shooting people in your house or shooting people you know and you go out to dinner or something like that, just get as close to them as you can to fill the frame with an interesting composition.
Benjamin: You sound good, John.
Gruber: Thanks. I got a new microphone.
Benjamin: What kind?
Gruber: Samson PS01.
Benjamin: All of our equipment is Samson stuff. Ira is responsible for that. He just sends stuff. “Oh, I got a new microphone, I’m going to send one out to you.”
Gruber: Yeah, I don’t understand how it happened, all of a sudden — I didn’t even ask for it, and he was nice enough to send me this as a sample.
Benjamin: You’ve got the USB one.
Gruber: Right.
Benjamin: And I’ve got one that — I don’t know all these terms, but it’s a regular microphone, and it plugs into a preamp, and I’ve got optical compression and all these boxes. Whereas yours is just plugged right into the USB port on your PowerBook. But it’s amazing how much better you sound. It’s a great mic that I actually started out — I did most of, maybe all but the last couple of Hivelogic podcasts with the mic that you’re using. It’s amazing how much better you sound through a good microphone.
Gruber: I don’t know what to say about that.
Benjamin: It’s true. You sound more like yourself. Like, when people —
Gruber: Dan, you’ve got to stop, you’re choking me up here.
Benjamin: Oh yeah. No, I mean, when people —
Gruber: Dan, stop.
Benjamin: — hear your voice. Just hear me out, when people hear your voice and you sound all tinny and crappy over your little crappy headset, people think it —
Gruber: [in a mock teary voice] Dan, this means so much to me.
Benjamin: Say what?
Gruber: This means so much to me.
Benjamin: Yeah, okay. I’ll edit that out. When they hear you over that little microphone, you sound so — everybody would email me and say, “Hey, Dan, new podcast sounds great, you sound great. WTF with Gruber?” Because the microphone was crap, you sounded like crap.
Gruber: Even on the first episode?
Benjamin: Especially.
Gruber: No, the second one was the one where I was recording on the PowerBook’s built-in mic. First one, I had a USB headset.
Benjamin: I don’t think there was a difference. I think they both sounded bad.
Gruber: Hm.
Benjamin: And people would literally write in and say, “He needs a new mic.”
Gruber: It’s like the podcasting equivalent of top-posting. Just poor form.
Benjamin: Using a bad mic.
Gruber: Right, right, right. It’s embarrassing. It’s like having dirt under your fingernails.
Benjamin: I was embarrassed. I’m embarrassed at the website now. But we’re going to get that fixed, we’re going to get that redesigned.
Gruber: We have top men on it right now.
Benjamin: Actually, we do. Actually, as of yesterday, the 11th, a new entity is in place on an issue.
Gruber: Top men. We get a lot of unsolicited suggestions.
Benjamin: Yeah we do.
Gruber: And that is very sweet and thank you to everybody who has sent in their own design suggestions for what it looks like. We definitely appreciate the sentiment.
Benjamin: We do.
Gruber: But top men are on the case. As for why it looks the way it does now, the question was do we wait until we have a good website to start recording and doing this show, or do we start recording.
Benjamin: Do we start recording or do we spend six months trying to make it look good, neither of us really being fantastic designers. So here’s the thing, we’ve got some interesting things from people. Like, more than one person I think has sent in music that we’re supposed to use, pictures, designs have come in. So it’s obvious to me that, number one, we obviously need some kind of a jingle, or an intro, or something.
Gruber: Nah, we don’t need a jingle.
Benjamin: We need a jingle, we need some kind of 1950s chewing gum jingle, I think.
Gruber: [laughs]
Benjamin: So if you want to send something in and it’s good — if you can get a barbershop quartet together and sing something, we will air that.
Gruber: We could definitely air the best submissions that people send in.
Benjamin: Yeah, send us stuff. Maybe that’s what we ought to do, we ought to say, if you have some ideas for a jingle, or music, or something — but don’t send us something that we could — if I can do it myself with my Casio keyboard in my basement, then don’t send it to me. If it’s genuinely good, if you play an instrument, or have an amazing voice, or something legitimate — send that. But if it’s something that I could do with a Casio keyboard, don’t send it. I don’t know how I could be more clear, John.
Gruber: All right. What’s your problem with Casio?
Benjamin: No, I like it, it’s good. Infinite time. So that’s it, we’ve got to wrap, we’ve already gone — you just messaged me “40m”. So I’m going to have to cut this again, but at least you didn’t curse. I just want to say for the record, why do people have to curse on their blogs? You curse on your blog, and now Craig Hockenberry who is, by the way, where has he been for the last 10 years on the blogosphere, because he’s awesome. Furbo, furbo.org, he now owes us for advertising, I think. But, amazing writing, he’s a great guy, he’s actually shorter than I am, which you would never know because he looks really tall in the pictures. But, amazing writer, really good writer. Now he’s cursing, now he has an adult blog, now I can’t link to it.
Gruber: But you link to me.
Benjamin: Well, I have no choice, I have to do something.
Gruber: Because we’re partners in the show.
Benjamin: You don’t realize when you start working with somebody, now all this crap you have to do to keep them as your friend. What’s the next show going to be about?
Gruber: I don’t know, we should do more on the camera stuff. I think we really gave it short shrift.
Benjamin: If we’re going to do that, we need to get Duncan on the show though.
Gruber: Yeah, that’s what we should do.
Benjamin: He’s not going to come on the show, he’s too busy, he’s in Portland, he’s in San Francisco, he’s all over — but he would be — I had him on the Hivelogic podcast, but it was more of an interview. He should just come on here and just talk.
Gruber: You know what, I had a good idea for someone else we should get on the show. I’m not going to say names because I don’t want to put him on the spot, put all this pressure right on somebody —
Benjamin: Why not? Come on.
Gruber: You know, there’s a lot of people who listen to this show. You’ll know who I’m talking about. I haven’t said this to you, but I’m just going to say one word to you, “Newton”.
Benjamin: Oh yeah, of course.
Gruber: You know who I’m talking about. Now, we get him on this show, and we’ll talk Newton, we’ll talk iPhone, we’ll talk about — and you know what the problem is going to be with getting him on the show. The problem is that he’s Canadian.
Benjamin: Oh, that’s right. I don’t know if we should have him on the show.
Gruber: I mean, that’s just...
Benjamin: What kind of show would we become if we had him on the show?
Gruber: Right. But we’ll see, maybe we can make it work. I think that’s what we should shoot for next week.
Benjamin: Will he need a passport in order to be on the show?
Gruber: I don’t know. I really don’t.
Benjamin: We’ll have to see. I don’t want it to be an interview, I want him and Duncan, anybody else we have — not an interview, it’s like they’re guests, they show up, they sit down in the studio, they talk. That’s it.
Gruber: Right, exactly.
Benjamin: I don’t want it to be anything like an interview. It’s not Larry King.
Gruber: No.
Benjamin: Well, then that’s it.
Gruber: All right, see you.
Benjamin: We’re done.

Big shoutout to people like @ynartistic, @xavirne, @angelicsoldier who made amazing fanart and fanfic that I wanted to contribute in the way I can. Hope to also meet more people! I also hope to put some more time into writing in general now!
It was dark for 2PM in the afternoon. Way too dark and cloudy for a supposedly nice Tuesday out. If I can recall, the weather omnic from the local news said that there would be a storm coming around Friday. I guess even today, with some much advancements in, weather reports can still get it wrong.
Tugging at my overcoat's collar more, careful not to ruin the thing I held onto, I continued my walk to where I needed to be. It was nice for the former higher ups to keep hush about where all the things were laid to rest. It was also nice that a lot of supporters still allowed the place to be kept nice and well. It was the same for those who remained to be here without welling up in anger and or sadness.
I continued my walk around the place, thankful that there weren't many people around the place. It was always a hassle when people noticed who I am. It was nice at first to be remembered as "The Poster Boy" for what was once loved. Then be hated, destroyed and now after so long, to have resurfaced. I shudder at the thought that history might repeat itself again, but I am confident at the new path the recall. Hoping it will lead a path much different from before.
'Not that I was of any fucking help.'
I groaned in my head for letting that bit of self-depreciation blurt out in me, not that there wasn't any truth to it. Being here right now in this place is a testament to what had happened.
This place that held so many memories and now is a place of remembering those memories.
A memorial.
A memorial of what was once the Swiss Headquarters of Overwatch.
The memorial for the members that fell when it fell with them.
When she fell with them.
I had to stop for a bit from my steady pace along the way, trying to make sure I don't well up in tears. I even look down to see the thing I was holding on my left that made me miss her more.
'Some soldier you are.' My thoughts tease back at me when I try to wipe any excess moisture on my eyes. I take take a steady breath, feeling the slight chill that signals rain coming sooner than later.
"I better hurry up and see her before I get the brunt of the storm." I muttered to myself. I decided to make a hasty pace along the other parts of the long walk in the memorial. I did not even stop by to pay tribute to monument that engraved various members who fell.
I made an internal nod to these people who died for their cause, but I needed to reach a specific statue in mind.
One that was dedicated to the humanitarian views of Overwatch.
One who fought for the right in the organization to focus more on helping the needs of others. A goal on humanitarianism rather than more on the militaristic views.
The one they used to call the Angel of Overwatch.
"Angela." I whisper it out her name once I finally reached where she laid to rest, or at least where she was last seen.
A beautiful row of white and yellow flowers were lined it lead up to a marvelous statue of clean cut gray marble. The statue was like Michaelangelo's La Pieta. It had an unnamed Overwatch soldier cradled by the angelic beauty herself. Her features still showed grace as her hair was in the usual ponytail, accompanied by her halo. Her suit accentuated her lithe body and her wings were very detailed and real. It would have seemed the statue would very much have taken flight with the fallen comrade. Her right hand caressed the soldier's nape to lift it up while her left held the thigh. Her bio-tech staff held as well upright, to illustrate the action she was known best for.
The power to heal and protect. To very much bring those close to death's clutches back to life. A gift that spoke volumes upon volumes to how amazing of a woman she was.
I walk close enough to see the pedestal the statue was placed, embedded in it was a golden metal plaque that wrote:
"Angela Ziegler, M.D.
Code name: Mercy
Born: XX/XX/2039
Death: XX/XX/2070
Truly an Angel amongst Men.
'Heroes Never Die' - Mercy"
Her famous words engraved next to an engraving of her signature next to it. As I walked towards the plaque, my gloved hand traced the neat and cursive strokes of her signature. I imagined that she was saying those words she always does that quite literally brings life.
"Heroes . . . Never Die." I muttered under my breath, as though her words would have brought her back.
Taking a step or two back, I marveled at the tall statue more up close, how it had captured her image down to her calm smile. Major respect to the sculptors who made this statue. It was so well done, that it was always a lot harder to confront her resting place every time I go to see her.
I steadied my breath and began.
"Hey Angel." I stated out, hopeful that it was not loud enough for anyone to hear, despite being somewhat empty. The slight tinge of a cool breeze acknowledged my greeting, prompting me to continue. The scenery was starting to become more dark-gray.
"It's been a while since I last came here. I have been busy." Trying to keep this awkward one-sided conversation going, I tried to keep going. Thinking like she was still here listening which would pretty much be as awkward as before.
It was a good 5 or so minutes of random idle chatting when I finally felt the chill of the air become more prominent. I huddled in my overcoat more, and realized I was still holding onto her gift while I tried to ramble on.
"I brought you these. I hope you enjoy them . . . wherever you are now." I placed the beautiful piece next to where I usually placed them whenever I had the time to visit. I am thankful the cleaners of the memorial in having kept the area clean from any dried ones from before. Sitting down in front of her statue, I tried to find myself comfortable.
"I hope you love them. I know you like these flowers, apart from the ones the people planted in front of your resting place." I look back the row of flowers of white, orange and yellow only to look back at the rather large an elaborate bouquet.
"They're called Gladiolus. They reminded me of like those tiger lilies from before and I thought you'd like them. More so since I remember how you'd always tease me for not knowing flowers." Chuckling from remembering how she would chuckle at me from the instances I bought her flowers saying the incorrect name, to which she would laugh her beautiful hearty laugh.
I remember how she would laugh with a slight snort when she finds something hilarious. How she would shake her head slowly but have that smile still grace her face when she sees an embarrassing moment happen to me and my antics. How she would have a radiant yet unkempt glow in her face when she wakes up after our nights together, something that drew me in more and more to her. How she would scrunch her face in concentration when she patches my wound, partly due to being angry with me for wounded, despite knowing my job description. The little things that she does that makes her more and more amazing.
Remembering them all makes me yearn for her so much more, even after 5 or years of being 'dead' I still miss her. I find myself comfortable in sitting in front of your statue, not even giving a flying heck if the storm rolled in right now and drenched us in its cold unforgiving deluge. I wouldn't care anymore because while they said that time heals all wounds, it still hurts knowing I caused the fall of Overwatch, I caused the tensions to happen between Gabe and I, and that I caused the love of my life to die when I should have died during the end.
"It shouldn't have been you, Angela. It's been around 6 years and I still can never forgive myself for having killed you." I looked back up to the angel in the statue, thinking it's still her, looking down upon but not in anger since I know she would have hated hearing me say that.
"I hope wherever you are, you are happy; that's all I can now hope for and while I don't believe in an afterlife, but maybe . . . just maybe, I'll get to see you again." The breeze picks up more as slight moisture form droplets which signal the start of dark stormy days. I look up to the sky and see that the dark cloud have finally rolled in, welcoming me with light rain that will only be the first wave before the storm kicks in.
"I . . . I have to go now. The storm's coming soon and I am probably going to have to leave the country as well since I have to continue helping out in the new Overwatch. The one I've told you about a couple of times? Yeah." The rain started to drop harder than before, telling me to wrap this up. Picking myself up from where I sat down, I continued to look at the statue as it was still her.
"I'll see you soon okay, Angel? I promise you that." I started to feel tears form in my eyes again, trying to hold it in before I finally say what I needed to say to her again.
"I-i . . . I love you so very much Angela. I hope you can hear me say them." I felt the nearby trees and shrubs rustle, but I didn't bother to look since it's probably the wind picking up and or some animal trying to hide now from the weather, nor did I care anymore as tears starting rolling down my eyes, not giving a care anymore who was watching a grown man, a soldier nonetheless, cry his heart out. Wiping my eyes from any tears, I started to walk away, hoping though that the bouquet will be fine. Probably not, and it was probably a stupid idea for me to leave them there when a storm is practically approaching, but in the end, it's not going to be there the next time I have time to meet with her again.
Walking back to my vehicle was a good 5 or 10 minute walk since frankly I wanted to savor my time in the memorial, even when the gust was getting stronger and the droplets were becoming heavier. I didn't want to leave, but I knew I had to. As long as there's still things Overwatch can do to make the world better, then I have to put my service again.
As I finally reached my vehicle, the breeze mitigated a bit and the rain wasn't as heavy which meant that it was a momentary calmness before the second wave. A calm before the storm as one would say. I looked straight up to expect a slight rain droplet or a patch of light shining through the dark gray clouds, but what I somewhat saw was something completely different.
I could have sworn I saw a silhouette in the sky that looked like a large black bird, or rather something that looked like it had arms along with wings. It was hard to decipher it rushing past in the dark sky, coupled with the fact that the darkness of the clouds made it even harder to even see if it was even a black bird at all. What was the strangest of them all as what fell on my nose as it sped past from where the memorial was.
I felt the texture of what fell on my nose, seeing it as colorful in my nasal visual field. It felt like a big velvety paper confetti, colored in bright off pink. Taking it off my face for better observation, I was even more perplexed by the thing that fell on my nose.
It was a flower petal.
A pink gladiolus flower petal.
Looking up back to see where that flying thing flew, I could barely make out anything in the sky as it started darkening once again, signaling the end of the calm and the start of the real beginning of the storm. As I start the engine of my vehicle, I still look at the petal now at my dashboard. I am starting to have weird ideas that are way too exhausting to entertain at the moment. All I know is that she heard me.
My Angel heard me, wherever she is.
Everything has been strange.
Well, if you count the things happening to my life one can make a notion that it is strange. Dead but not really dead. Working in the shadows to heal people, but have no longer much qualms about taking down those who wish to harm others. Once a physician to stop wars throw at us, now turned to an adversary with the sole mission to cut the bud before more terror happens. Skilled with now both medical technology and the blade, I find myself wondering why life couldn't throw me a bone and not make even going to a place not be something that ties my past together with a neat bow.
Case in point, finding myself along the memorial which was once the Swiss Headquarters of Overwatch.
Second case in point, having to hide and be silent as I see someone walk towards the famous statue of my 'final resting place' with what appeared to be a large bouquet. That someone was greeting my and rambling as though I was there listening to him talk. Interesting how I was also getting interested in what he was rambling on about in this one-sided conversation.
Final case in point, said someone was my former lover who brought me a beautiful and large bouquet of pink lilie-
"They're called Gladiolus. -"
Sorry, a beautiful and large bouquet of Gladiolus flowers perched upon my statue. I see him comfortable sitting in front of it, marveling at the statue that depicted me in a way that was me, but no longer me.
"It shouldn't have been you, Angela. It's been around 6 years and I still can never forgive myself for having killed you." I hear him state it as though it was fact. I almost found myself wanting to glide towards him and prove him wrong, but I know that would jeopardize everything I have worked hard on.
"I hope wherever you are, you are happy; that's all I can now hope for and while I don't believe in an afterlife, but maybe-"
'Maybe what, Jack?' I find that voice within me ask in hope. It was a voice I haven't found in myself for so long. It was the voice of Angela, the woman who was still very much alive and very much in love with the man in front of me.
". . . just maybe, I'll get to see you again."
"Oh Jack . . . if that were only that simple." I mumbled to myself, finding my heart to still beat in ecstasy to see the man who should have moved on after my 'death' 6 years ago, still love me and want to see me again.
The wind started picking up once again, accompanied now with slight moisture and droplets; it was practically telling us that it had to be wrapped up soon. I find him get up from his spot, telling 'me' that he needed to go soon. I felt a wave of sadness wash over me as he said that, knowing that this was the situation we both now live in: The living who still loves the dead and the 'dead' wanting to stay hidden away from the living, but still very much alive for vengeance.
I almost lost my grip at the tree and shrubs I was leaning onto, almost ruining my position for him to have noticed, thanking the heavens he must have mistaken it for the wind picking up. It would have been completely unjustifiable when in battle, but what he said before he finally left just threw my seriousness out the metaphorical window.
"I-i . . . I love you so very much Angela. I hope you can hear me say them."
'Love.'
'I love you.'
'. . . hope you can hear me say them.'
It was almost like those words now in my head taunt me with how he just said those words, almost as though he knew I was there all along and wanted to throw this charade we were playing. But it wasn't the case since I see his figure walk away from the statue.
Brisk walking my way to my monument, I found myself drawn to his bouquet. It wasn't like I didn't know he hasn't visited before with flowers, but this might be the first time I catch him in the act. Oh how fate can be a cruel and make my life even more strange.
I take the bouquet with me, but not before flying up to be at eye-level with the statue of my former self. The way the sculpted my face well that it even had the same expression I used to have when I would heal a person with my skills in peace. A peace that for some reason no longer resonates for me.
'Angela Ziegler is dead. Only Nemesis remains.'
The last thought finally brought me back to my conviction and resolve. I am who I am now because of what happened here. I cannot for the life of me back down now.
"I must fulfill my goal. Even if it means making necessary sacrifices." I whispered to myself in somewhat comfort. Looking back up to the sky I see that there is a brief calmness before the breeze and rain continue, to which I should take that as my signal to finally leave this place.
I jettison my way out of the memorial site, bouquet held tight with my right hand as I fly away from it all, back to where I need to pack my equipment and continue my goal. To fly away from my former life. To fly away from the name Dr. Angela Ziegler. To fly away from Overwatch's Mercy.
I can do all of that.
I felt slight moisture pool under my eye, thinking at first it was rain droplets once again, but I know that my visor will have prevented weather from hitting my eyes. I know it's my tears from the last thought I had but I don't want to acknowledge it enough to finally think of the answer for it like the others.
"To let go and fly away from the man I love." I mumble to myself as I continue flying away past the road that connects the memorial, and a parking lot for the visitors. Just thinking about the visitors of the memorial brought me back to him again, and what he said before he left.
"I hope you can hear me say them."
Thinking back to those words, and I am letting that inner voice within me answer it, since I know I can't even begin to think of it right now.
'I did hear you Jack Morrison.'
'I heard you loud and clear.'
The last one was enough to even get me smile at the thought as I continue flying past everything, eventually nearing my hide-away.
"Your Angel still heard you."
