The difference of Henry and Joel’s decisions.

Henry saying he’s a bad guy for what he did. Because the closest he ever was to being truly violent was holding an unloaded gun at them. Henry’s isn’t a violent man. He hasn’t had to do things, not like Joel has. Henry’s decision to save his baby brother from a fate not caused by the apocalypse, but a sickness from before. Not from ravaging infected or people, but leukemia. Something he needs medicine for. How he gave a good man to FEDRA, knowing that man would be killed, all to get medicine for Sam, as little of a supply there was left for it. He wanted to give Sam a good life, even with leukemia. So that Sam could still draw and paint him self as “Super Sam”. So that they could draw themselves as superheroes together. So that they could have gotten out of there to freedom, living a life in community with other survivors. Living, not just surviving anymore. His unending love for his brother is what drove that decision, that want. What drove him to give away a good man, knowing his fate. And despite it being done for love, he believes he’s a bad guy for doing this, even with it being for Sam.

And Joel. Standing firm in his decision. “What’d you do?” “I saved her.” Telling her at the end of tlou2 that he would do it all over again. Their entire journey together, massacring an entire hospital- all for her. Not regretting it; because he’s used to it. He’s used to killing. He’s used to violence and murder and the harshness of what the world has to offer. What he’s had to do because of it. And death? Not just a death, but his daughter’s death? It’s no question. As much as he seems to value life if he can, especially in show, this does not matter. Because Ellie’s life was at stake. Because he can’t fail saving her life, not again. He sure as hell isn’t giving her life up for medicine or a cure that wouldn’t have even worked or been distributed properly. Was it a selfish decision because he wanted to keep her and love her? Yeah. But I believe he also wanted to give her a good life. We see that on the rooftop before the hospital. He wanted to leave and go settle down with her. But he kept going for her. And he saved her for him, yes, but also for her. To give her a life that she deserved. To give her a true life. One without just surviving. One where they can live, too. And so he saves her because of love. That love; that fierce, unbridled, unending, sacrificial, forever love that has overfilled his heart in ways he never thought it could, drove his decision.

That’s men like them are there for, after all. To protect. To save. To love.
