"Think I mentioned 'Scott Street' and Springsteen," nobody else besides his girlfriend, you, was in the house. As he started to walk towards your shared room, which he believed was the source of the noise, he started to realize that it was, in fact, your voice he'd been hearing.

"And I wrote your name twice," finally, he knocked on the door of your room. A quiet fumbling and then a small voice could be heard, "It's open," it said.

There you were, in all your glory, sitting on your well made bed covered in colorful quilts and pillows, with a guitar in your hands.

"Mi vida, don't stop on my account. Is it alright if I stay? Listen for a while?" He said.

"Sure, honey. I don't mind," you said as you stood up and grabbed his soft yet calloused hands and dragged him closer to the bed.

He flopped down next to you, the bed shaking with him. His feet reached the ground and he rested his palms behind his head as if to cushion himself.

"Keep playing, woman! You're amazing," he spoke with the biggest smile on his face, "I've only ever heard you singing backup vocals, but damn, darlin'! You should be our frontman!" You blushed and giggled a small bit at his endless compliments. He had always been the funny type, you even thought he was joking when he confessed his feelings for you a few months back.

So, with your white cotton tank-top and shorts, you continued to sing and strum on your wooden guitar.

Of course, this song was not about Warren. You'd written it a year or so ago about a man you had been seeing for a while, but inevitably broke things off with. Warren had quite literally been your saving grace. You two were twin flames, two sides of the same coin.

You'd known him since you were young children, and of course, you had written your fair share of songs about him. You'd only play those when he was out of the house, though. You weren't sure you wanted him to hear your entire sappiness yet.

He watched you in awe, his eyes sometimes drifting from your face to your soft, slightly tanned arms. How he loved when you'd wrap them around his torso at all times of the day. He didn't need to be high to genuinely enjoy your company like he did with most people nowadays.

He sat up, resting his chin on his hand while his elbow rested on his criss-crossed knee, looking like an attentive kindergartener.

✩🏞️🎶Review: I think it is safe to say that I am addicted to Zapata slow burns. “All Rhodes Lead Here” is the third book that I have read by Mariana Zapata and I LOVED it so much!!  I really enjoyed exploring the wilderness through Aurora’s perspective. The hikes that she took through Pagosa Springs were so descriptive and the beautiful imagery made me feel as though I was venturing through the forest with her. I totally understand why Rhodes chose to be a fish and game warden in that area, which is a pretty cool job occupation if I might add. Another aspect I loved about the book was the relationship development between Aurora and Rhodes. The two start out as strangers, Aurora being Rhodes’ tenant, and become friends over time. When the pair begin to feel attraction for one another near the end of the novel, Rhodes does not rush anything. I think that this is so important considering Aurora experiences a lot of trauma stemming from her previous relationship. Rhodes gave Aurora the space she needed to figure out what she wanted. At the same time, he was only a call away she ever needed a bear hug, emphasizing the importance of strong support systems.  Rhodes, as a character, is just a big sweetheart. I love how protective he is of Aurora. When Aurora got lost on one of the trails, he abandoned his post to search for her, later taking care of her injuries when they returned home.  Rhodes’ love for his son is unmatched. He did not have to be present in Amos’ life (Rhodes served as a sperm donor for his best friend and his wife) but CHOSE to be involved anyway. He CHOSE not to re-enlist, even though he found joy in serving his country, so that he did not have to miss out on any of his son’s “first times.” Amos’ family may be unconventional (with three parents and all), but he is loved nonetheless. The representation of nontraditional families in literature is so important and I appreciate Zapata making that a highlight of this book.

Y/N: Being a female producer in the 70s was… how to put it delicately… absolute shit. But I tried my best. I had a list of rules to live by: don’t date anyone related to my job, never stay later than 7pm, always have more than one person in the room with you and never drink on the job. Not even coffee. We actually used to be called The Dunne Brothers and then we changed it for some reason, I think we all collectively decided against that name one night at a diner.”

“Well if you’re getting produced by Teddy then you have to have at least a modicum of talent.”

“Don’t know if I should take that as an insult or a compliment.”

“So will I be seeing you again?”

“We work in the same building so probably.”

“I might come around to see how you sound tomorrow.”

“I’ll be sure to be playing the drums to the best of my ability.”

Y/N: I ended up going to that recording session the next day. And the next and the next. Teddy even let me mix a few of the songs. I also wrote down his number immediately after I got home. I’m pretty sure I still have the receipt where it’s written on somewhere. Anyways I ended up breaking that first rule after the tour. Warren asked me out when we were surfing. Actually I was surfing and Warren was trying to. God that was a beautiful day.

Warren: The sun was just about to set and I had given up trying to surf so Y/N and I were just sitting on our boards watching the sky turn different colors. We had been friends since that night Teddy introduced us and I was obviously attracted to her. But it was then when I realized I was in love with her. I ended up asking her to marry me at that exact same spot a few years later.

Y/N: I immediately said yes, both times. Warren and I just work. He is like a part of me I can’t bear the thought of losing.

Warren: I love her with my entire self and more. I can’t see my life any other way. I think one of the greatest things that came out of the band was not just the music but it also led me to my soulmate.

Y/N: Rule breaking is really one of the best things I could have done. I met my other half and worked with people I would consider my family. Sometimes plans just aren’t meant to be followed.

Y/N Rojas is one of the top producers in the music industry. She shared producer credits with Teddy Price on Aurora and has gone on to produce some of the biggest names in the 80s and 90s. Currently she lives on a houseboat with her husband, Warren, the former drummer of Daisy Jones & The Six and their twins, Teddy and Karen. She owns a music label (Reconstitution Records) which will be producing the newest album of the reunited band, Daisy Jones & The Six.

Second talent allows her to summon a Spirit Shadow within attack range upon deployment, if she has her summon in a nearby tile she gains Camouflage, her summon attacks enemies in her range inflicting a brief Slow and Afterimage, her summon can be attacked by ranged enemies

Skill 1 is a power strike skill that makes her next attack inflict more shockwaves and Stuns the targets for a few seconds, additionally it increases the splash range and shockwave damage multiplier

Skill 2 reduces her attack interval, increases her ATK and lets her attack multiple enemies at once, it also has an Overload mode where her attacks turn into a rapid barrage that hits random enemies and has a damage multiplier, this skill can be manually deactivated

Skill 3 immediately summons 2 more Shadow Spirits (up to 3 can exist at a time, will remain when skill ends), increases her ATK, greatly lengthens her attack interval, massively increases her attack's splash range, increases the Afterimage proc chance to 100% and gives her attack a damage multiplier, this is an ammo skill and can be manually deactivated

Skill 3 expands his range, increases his ATK and lets him attack multiple targets at once, enemy projectiles caught within his attack range will have massively reduced flight speed and will be removed if they are still in his range when his skill ends

Starting your whole life over probably isn’t supposed to be.

But a small town in the mountains might be the perfect remedy for a broken heart.

Checking out her landlord across the driveway just might cure it too.

Enjoy plot-driven romances (but don’t worry, this is still very character driven also)

CHARACTERS:

Aurora De La Torre:

I always love when characters in books have depth and their past is discussed in a way that gives us (the readers) an understanding as to what led them to present day. Aurora had JUST that. She had struggles from her past that she was fleeing from (rightfully) and just wanted to start over at the only place she knew as home. She had goals while still not entirely sure what her future held, which I think is relatable for most people. I know the whole “finding themselves” trope gets a little cliché, but I think Mariana Zapata wrote this flawlessly in Aurora.

Aurora is perseverant and determined to claim what is rightfully hers throughout this entire novel, even if it’s not easy. Tough hike? Tough SHIT, she’s set on getting through it. Coincidentally, I think this is her biggest strength and biggest weakness. Throughout the novel, Aurora often desperately needs help but refuses it as a way to build her character, even if she’s miserable; which, to me, is the tell-tale sign of a strong female main character and I eat that shit up every. single. time. But don’t be fooled, when Aurora is offered help or assistance, she takes it with gratitude.

Aurora is troubled in several different ways from her past, but none of those things inhibit her ability to be a decent person. She’s not spiteful to the universe (although she has every right to be) and she treats everyone with respect as long as respect is given to her. I think she is the absolute model blueprint for my favorite type of FMC.

Tobias Rhodes:

I’d say “don’t even get me started on Rhodes”, but please, get me started on Rhodes. THIS MAN????? Perfection. Absolute unfettered perfection. Tobias Rhodes, too, has a past and it creates so much depth in his character. Seeing how he acts and why is so important for me in a grumpy x sunshine romance because otherwise the MMC comes off as just being irritated at everyone and everything purely because he’s allowed to.

Rhodes tends to keep people at a distance until he becomes comfortable due in part because he is protective over his son. Watching him unfold throughout this book was probably my favorite aspect because he was the gift that kept on giving. Every time him and Aurora interacted there was just a small glimmer of something new in his words and actions each time. You just can’t help but fall in love with him yourself once he starts showing his sense of humor, selflessness, and empathy.

If your love language is acts of service, then OH BOY are you in major luck with this book. Rhodes shares his love in multifaceted ways, but acts of service is his BREAD AND BUTTER YA’LL. You won’t be disappointed.

PRAISES, CRITIQUES, AND MY THOUGHTS:

I really, truly, HONESTLY have nothing bad to say about this book. I grappled for hours before sitting down to write this review for something even slightly bad about this book and I just couldn’t think of anything.

Mariana Zapata has been crowned the queen of slow-burn romances, and after reading this book (my first of hers) I can attest that she was crowned appropriately. This book is pretty lengthy at a whopping 559 pages, but I was never bored while reading this. If things weren’t actively happening, then things were being built up for something to happen soon. It really is a gift for an author to be able to write 559 pages of words that don’t bore the reader.

There was banter, yearning, and tension (SO MUCH TENSION!!!). The characters meshed together flawlessly and confirmed for Aurora that she made the right decision returning to Pagosa Springs. After being chewed up and spit out by her ex-husband’s family, she deserved to be surrounded by a group of people that cared about her and I am so over the moon that she got exactly what she deserved. Found family tropes in books will never cease to make me smile.

This book was recommended to be from a post that I made about wanting romance book recs with an MMC that resembled Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls. Luke Danes and Tobias Rhodes are two pieces cut from the same fabric so if you’re a Luke Danes stan then just know ‘All Rhodes Lead Here’ will not disappoint you.

I can always tell that a book was a five-star read for me when I find myself instantly thinking about how no book could ever compare to it. I think I’m going to be looking for Tobias Rhodes in every romance book I read in the future and that should speak for itself.

Setting:

The festivities are winding down after Cassie and Ethan’s wedding at her grandparents’ estate in Newport, Rhode Island. The happy couple is spending the night in a guest house on the other side of the estate before departing for their honeymoon the next morning.

In typical Ethan and Cassie fashion, everything had come together fairly quickly. Since they only had four weeks to organize a wedding, it had been all hands in deck. Now everyone that’s staying at the estate is relaxing in the family parlor with champagne as well as water for those that need hydration.

Cast of Characters:

How did you first find out about their relationship? Were you surprised?

Sienna: There was something between them from the first. I still remember after our first shift we all went to Donahue’s and Cassie made a beeline for Dr. Ramsey -- I mean, Ethan pretty much right away. They shared a couple of drinks and there was definitely light flirting going on as well.

Jackie: (shaking head) And that was after he’d ripped her a new one, twice in one day. She really was a glutton for punishment.

Bryce: They confirmed it in our second year of residency at Sunday Brunch, but yeah, you couldn’t be around them and not feel the sparks. Plus, how else could anyone say no to this? (He points to his handsome face and killer body)

Jackie: (snickers) Very easily, meathead.

How was the rumor mill at Edenbrook once they went public? Did you have to defend their honor?

Aurora: You mean after that spectacle in the lobby with the balloon and the flowers? I was at Mass Kenmore by then and even I heard about how whipped Dr. Ramsey was.

Kyra: I had the day off and I was so bummed to have missed it. I heard it was a Hallmark moment.

Naveen: To answer your question, the rumor mill was surprisingly muted, more’s the pity. They’re not exactly subtle and most people had guessed they were in some kind of a relationship by then.

Elijah: And everyone likes Cassie, so they were happy for her. But a few people did wonder if she could have done better. (Stammers when Sienna glares at him) I-I…I mean, Dr. Ramsey does have a reputation for being a bit…intimidating.

What was your first impression of Ethan? Did he fit into the friend group right away?

Sienna: The first time we met him he was our attending. He was on Cassie’s case about something, and I had never been more terrified. But I just knew I had to rescue her. In these last few years, I’ve gotten to know him really well and I can see exactly what Cassie saw him in.

Kyra: (smirks) A killer body and magnetic blue eyes.

The ladies all start fanning themselves.

Bryce: Of course, E and I are gym buddies and super close…

Jackie: (interrupting) Does he know that or are you living in la-la land?

Max: My first impression was colored through Cassie’s experiences, but I can’t say that I liked him based on the effect he had on her. He was the only one for her though, so I had to accept him. However, the first time we met I knew we’d be close – the man knows his scotch and he’s completely gone over my sister.

What’s the most adorable thing they do as a couple?

Olivia Valentine walks into the parlor where the gang is lounging.

Olivia: Holding hands. The first time Cassie brought him to Newport to meet the family, you couldn’t help but notice how one would reach for the other. It was adorable, romantic and just lovely to watch.

Naveen: I agree with Olivia. I’ve known Ethan the longest of anyone here. He’s never been like that before and it’s wonderful to see. I’m so glad he learnt not to follow in my footsteps where relationships were concerned.

Sienna: I think everything they do is adorable. (Getting wistful) I sometimes wish I could find what they have.

Olivia: Sienna, you know I love you like a daughter.

Sienna: Aww. (Gives Olivia a hug) I love you too, Mrs. V.

Olivia: Just say the word and I’ll introduce you to as many eligible men as you like.

Max: You should take her up on that, Si. If there’s one thing Olivia Valentine excels at is matchmaking.

Olivia: Hasn’t worked with you yet.

Max: (grins) That’s because I’m immune to your ways, mom. (Shares a conspiratorial wink with Bree.)

(Bree blushes and clears her throat.)

Which of their dates would you have liked to crash?

Jackie: None of them. They have surprisingly boring dates.

Sienna: Not boring, just private and incredibly romantic. Olivia: (fascinated tone) Don’t stop on my account.

Naveen: Or mine. Always knew Ethan was secretly a romantic. Clearly Cassie brings out the best in him.

Aurora: Although I wouldn’t mind crashing one of their opera dates. They always dress up so fancy and her Pictagram feed on those night actually makes opera look like fun.

Kyra: They have other types of dates too, like when they went to that food festival. They’re very low key though.

Did you ever witness a walk of shame (or anything else of the sort)?

Elijah and Sienna both glance at each other and burst out laughing.

Bryce: What’s so funny?

Sienna: (giggling) Nothing. Just, we saw Cassie trying to sneak Ethan out of our apartment the morning after the ethics hearing in her intern year.

Elijah: (tears are leaking out of his eyes with mirth)You should have seen their faces. It was hilarious. They’d clearly forgotten that she had roommates.

What was your reaction when you found out Cassie was moving out to move in with Ethan?

Jackie: I think the question should be turned around. Why hadn’t she moved in with him already?

Aurora: True. They’re obviously going to officially live together now, but Cassie was still living in the apartment until a week before the wedding even if she did spend most nights at his place.

Max: He wanted her to move in during her last year of residency. But Cassie told me that she liked living with you guys and Ethan understood. I think they reached a compromise.

Sienna: Yes, they did. Three or four nights if they could manage it, but especially the night when they didn’t have work the following day. (Gets teary) Just occurred to me that Cassie won’t be coming back to the apartment to live anymore.

Max hands her a handkerchief and she smiles at him gratefully.

Who won the prediction pool about when Ethan would pop the question?

The gang collectively turns to look at Olivia Valentine who is swiping through wedding pictures on her phone.

Kyra: Mrs. V definitely won that pool if one ever existed.

Naveen: I think Ethan surprised everyone, including himself.

Jackie: (smirks) Who knew Dr. Terminator could be defeated by a cheesy movie.

Sienna: He loves Cassie and would have proposed anyway.

Max: Yeah, but not quite like that. Ethan tends to want things just so.

Olivia: Don’t know why you were all surprised? I knew from the moment he visited Newport the first time that he’d propose to Cassie within two years. I’ve had the caterers on standby ever since.

Sienna: (surprised) Really? No wonder we were able to pull this off in four weeks. I thought we were both just really good planning.

Olivia: We are, my dear. But you can’t leave good caterers to luck. Besides, knowing my daughter the way I do, I knew she’d be impatient to get married as soon as he proposed. Also, not to be crass, but being wealthy does tend to speed things along.

Were you in the wedding party? What was your favorite part about the wedding?

Bryce: I tried to convince Ethan that I’d make an excellent best man, but he went with this one. (Points towards Max)

Max: (smirks) I might not be his gym buddy, B, but we share a love of expensive scotch that can’t be beat. Plus, I had an inside connection.

Naveen: It was an intimate wedding, close family and friends only. Very true to who Ethan and Cassie are, so there wasn’t a wedding party in the traditional sense.

Kyra: Sienna rocked it as wedding organizer and Maid of Honor though. (Raises her glass) To Sienna!

Everyone raises their glass.

All: To Sienna!

Jackie: My favorite part has to be this champagne.

Bryce: The dance floor was fun too. I don’t know who made that playlist, but they should get a medal.

Aurora: Thanks, Bryce. It was a lot of fun and Cassie gave me free reign.

Bryce looks at Aurora, clearly surprised.

Kyra: The cake. Sienna outdid herself there.

Olivia: Are you sure you want to stay in medicine, dear? I know people that would keep you very busy if you decided to switch to baking fulltime. You’d fly all over the world, first class, bake for royalty. Just say the word.

Max: (exasperated) Mom! Leave her alone. Sienna is an amazing doctor.

Naveen: Agreed. But it’s always nice to have options, right Dr. Trinh?

Sienna: Yes, Dr. Banerji. (Turns toward Olivia) I love being a doctor, Mrs. V. It’s in the blood as my grandfather was one too. I love to bake, but just for family and friends.

Olivia: Whatever makes you happy, my dear. Just know that you’re an amazing person and love will find you, very soon.

Jackie: On that note. Who wants more champagne?

Notes on a Rockstar and a Bookstore Owner | headcanons

description: they say that opposites attract, that couldn't be more true when talking about this pair.

You met Warren when he wandered into your LA bookstore in search of a record store. Obviously you didn’t sell music at the bookstore but you still felt intrigued by his presence, someone who was vastly different from the people you usually dated.

You brought down from your little upstairs apartment a few records and got him a cup of tea as you listened to them.

To say the least Warren was surprised by your taste in music, expecting a lot of classical music due to the atmosphere of your store but instead there was a lot of Elvis, The Beatles, Queen, David Bowie and then came the pièce de résistance.

Just as you had both nearly finished off your teas, you put on Aurora and Warren immediately went crazy.

Also can you just imagine that man drinking tea? He would probably want something more like coffee but didn’t want to be rude.

Anyways you didn’t believe him at first until he showed you the record sleeve. And there he was in all his glory, standing in a group with one of your favorite bands.

Of course, you freaked out a little but then agreed to let him borrow some of the records that you had and he didn’t.

The next time that he came to visit, he came deliberately and with some records he thought you would enjoy.

Over the next month or so you both exchanged records and you got him to read more books.

The first time you went to one of the infamous Hollywood parties you basically just stood in place until Warren made his way over to you… with a bunch of groupies.

You obviously had established a relationship as friends but Warren radiated an energy, he was so kind and funny so after that you just declined any and all invitations from Warren to join his boat parties.

Warren was honestly confused on why you didn’t want to come over when you had basically become his best friend but he didn’t push it.

One day he invited you over to band practice at the studio since he knew you had been secretly wishing to go for ages.

You appeared on one of the days that Daisy and Billy seemed to be having one of their good days so the session went pretty well.

The band absolutely loved you, of course they were slightly confused as to why Warren was hanging around a girl who looked like she had just walked out of like a fairytale when he usually brought around models and groupies.

Karen and Daisy adored you and they could see the change that you were inducing in Warren. Not that you had noticed but ever since you had stopped going to Warren’s parties he was having less and less of them as well as going easier on the drugs.

You met Camila for lunch one day through Karen and you instantly hit it off. Julia also loved you and you spent a lot of time around Camila since she had become one of your favorite people.

The moment of your first kiss happened after one of his shows. You had never been to a big concert and were honestly intimidated by all the incredible people around you but just after the band finished their set, you made your way backstage.

There you encased Warren in a huge hug and told him how proud you were of him.

That was when he realized how much of a wonder you truly were. Someone he wanted to call his girlfriend, maybe even his wife someday.

The kiss was akin to shooting stars, like a warm cup of hot chocolate during a thunderstorm.

You both dated for a few years after that, even after the band broke up you still saw Karen and Daisy quite a bit plus Eddie always came to visit the house you guys now owned (you didn’t make him sell the boat by the way).

You both planned out weekly dates, sometimes they consisted of picnics or driving around LA in your car. Sometimes Warren got you to come to huge concerts with him and he would basically have to make sure you didn’t wander off somewhere.

Reading also became a favorite shared activity. Every night before going to bed, if you weren’t doing anything else, you would read your respective books and tell each other your favorite quotes.

Being booksmart and introverted meant that you didn’t get out as much as you would have liked but Warren created a safety bubble that made you interested in finding ways to spend time doing the things he loved.

You still kept the bookstore well into your marriage and even added a little cafe to it. Persephone’s Corner became incredibly popular over the years and you and Warren spent the rest of your years together comfortably.

You had two kids together and Warren got to name them (with your approval of course) after some of your favorite artists and authors. So you had little Emily Rojas as well as John Bowie Rojas (yes they're cheesy but they fit well).
