The Philosophy of Leadership
The philosophy of leadership is a multidisciplinary field that explores the nature, principles, and ethics of effective leadership. It encompasses various philosophical, psychological, and ethical perspectives on leadership and aims to understand what constitutes successful and ethical leadership. Here are some key elements and areas of focus in the philosophy of leadership:
Leadership Ethics: Examining the ethical responsibilities and moral principles that guide leaders in their decision-making and actions.
Leadership Theories: Analyzing different leadership theories, such as transformational leadership, servant leadership, and ethical leadership, to understand the underlying philosophies and values that inform these approaches.
Leadership and Power: Investigating the relationship between leadership and power, including how leaders acquire, use, and share power, and the ethical implications of power dynamics.
Leadership and Morality: Exploring the moral dimensions of leadership, including the moral character of leaders and the moral dilemmas they face in their roles.
Leadership and Authenticity: Examining the concept of authentic leadership, which emphasizes the importance of aligning personal values and beliefs with one's leadership style.
Leadership and Virtue Ethics: Applying virtue ethics to leadership, focusing on the development of virtuous leadership traits and the role of character in effective leadership.
Leadership and Social Justice: Investigating how leaders can promote social justice, equity, and fairness through their actions and policies.
Leadership and Followership: Understanding the role of followers in the philosophy of leadership and how leaders can foster positive relationships with their followers.
Leadership in Different Contexts: Considering how leadership philosophy may vary across different contexts, such as business, politics, education, and nonprofit organizations.
Historical Perspectives: Exploring historical examples of leadership and how leadership philosophies have evolved over time.
The philosophy of leadership aims to contribute to the development of principled, effective, and ethical leaders who can positively impact organizations, communities, and society as a whole. It provides a philosophical foundation for leadership development and decision-making, emphasizing the importance of ethical and values-based leadership.

Inclusive Leadership, Diversity & Trauma Training
The amygdala is one of two almond-shaped clusters of nuclei located deep and medially within the temporal lobes of the brain's cerebrum in complex vertebrates, including humans, that is shown to perform a primary role in the processing of memory, decision-making, and emotional responses (including fear, anxiety, and aggression).
The "almond" is our personal alarm system.
Our services are provided through this lens. We are committed to supporting organizations in creating environments where we can thrive. As a licensed professional counselor and a certified trauma practitioner and trainer, I launched Healing Your Almond to provide innovative solutions to growing issues in the workplace. We provide customized training and consult with businesses, to increase performance and productivity. We partner with your organization to support you and your team to increase understanding, overcome barriers and create new options and possibilities.
Research shows that authentic leadership gets results. We often hear the saying, "people leave supervisors, not jobs." At Healing Your Almond we understand quality employees stay with authentic leaders. The correlation between a healed almond and authentic leadership is this...if you trust and feel understood by your supervisor and the majority of the individuals you interact with at work, your alarm will remain deactivated. This creates space for creativity and productivity.

“The only journey is the one within.” ― Rainer Maria Rilke
This quote really resonates for me today. As my partner and I continue to work on our book project, and travel across the beautiful, diverse, and complicated country that is Mexico, the sentiments I glean from this quote keep surfacing for me. The journeys we embark on, whether in our lives or our careers, are not really about those external people or places we encounter on our path. It is about the journey within ourselves and where we let it lead us. May seem obvious, but this book work has had me thinking a lot about where I have come from and where I want to go next. This book, while a work of fiction, is based partly on my own journey, and what I encountered during a formative time in my life. What I encountered then continues to inform me now. My current work has me questioning myself, not because of self-doubt, but rather because of self- confidence.
Do we have the courage when we need it to make changes, start new things, leave bad things behind, and evolve? I have never seen myself as a person who is afraid of change, as much as I do enjoy some creature comforts in certain traditions. I alway have felt up for a challenge, a different way of doing something, and meeting and befriending people who are different from me. I really like that about myself and see it as a talent. I have had some bad experiences and tough challenges, like anyone who lives a complex and curious life. I have had times I wasn't sure I would get through the challenges I faced in one piece. The adversity sometimes felt too much. As it turns out, adult life is not only hard (as all adults I knew as a kid would point out), but it can also feel so far from carefree that it seems like it could break you in two, if you let it. However, it's also part of adult life to not let it. Dig deep and forever for your resilience. It's there. It's within you always, you see, and so like Dorothy and the power of her famous Ruby Slippers, it's a power you have all along.
What this book project journey has reminded me is that we have many internal resources and capacities that if we don't extend beyond our comfort zones, we will never exercise fully. You don't know what you can handle and overcome until you do it. And overcoming things strengthens you further to handle even more. And by handle, I don't been fighting necessarily. But also knowing when to walk away and change your course. Pursue your happiness. That takes great strength and courage, too.
And that's what my journey has reminded me the most - my inner strength is always more than I think it is until I have to use it. I have been let down personally and professionally by people I trusted, admired, and emulated. And so have you, I suspect. I'm proud of what I have done in the face of those disappointments. After a good catharsis (could be a cry, a shout, a shopping spree, or a travel getaway), I have used those disappointments to fuel me to continue on a path that is right for me. My path.
When was the last time you really worked with your inner strength? When did you last use it? What did it teach you about yourself and where you've been? And more importantly, where can it take you, if you let it?
Until next week!
