I was talking to an idiot and I need validation.
#superman#clark kent#kal el#comics#dc comics#smallville#martha kent#jon kent#ma kent#pa kent#im gonna rant now. this isnt at you its at the dumb fuck who was commenting on my comment on tiktok.#YES! why the fuck wouldn't he be! he was ADOPTED to be adopted you gotta have the right paperwork in order. the person im mad at LITERALLY#SAID Clark was in an orphanage... lets put our thinking caps! if he was in an orphanage Ma and Pa gave him to the state and yk what! i bet#they thought he was an abandoned baby! no one knew he was an alien. if they didnt he would have been in a govt lab! and in a comic i read ma#and pa thought he was a nasa experiment! yk how they put dogs and moneys in orbit? they thought they did that with a baby! so they took him#ok ok ok then the person i was debating said ma and pa were CRIMINALS!!!!! THEY JUST SAID CLARK WAS IN AN ORPHANAGE!#SO MA AND PA FOUND A BABY. TURNED HIM OVER TO THE AUTHORITIES AND AFTER IT WAS PROVEN THAT HE HAD NO FAMILY THEY ADOPTED HIM!#all of that is legal! they made it sound like ma snuck into a house a stole a child! put some respect on the Kents!#and for why we were debating. he had to have been assigned an ID/ss number/citizen ship because he was to the govt an abandoned BABY#they made it sound like Clark was a 20 year old! he was at best a toddler. he didnt need to take a citizenship test or anything cus HE WAS A#BABY! he was just issued citizenship cus to the govt he was an abandoned baby in the usa WHERE EISE WOULD HE HAVE BEEN FROM!#cus i cant stress this enough NO ONE KNEW HE WAS AN ALIEN! (except maybe ma and pa)#the govt gave an abandoned baby in Kansas an us id cus THEY HAD NO REASON TO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE BABY FOUND IN A FEILD IN KANSAS WASN'T#BORN IN THE USA! and with all the paperwork they did on him they gave him us citizen rights like THE RIGHT TO VOTE#there are a million possibilities for why a baby would be abandoned in a feild in Kansas and it would take awhile to aliens#this is what i think the govt thought 'ok baby abandoned in a feild of a local couple. no family to be found. a young mother probably got#pregnant and didn't want to baby so she left it where a couple who couldn't have children could find them. oh look the couple wants to adopt#let them take the baby.' babys being abandoned was so common that safe haven laws were made to give mothers who didnt want their infants a#safe place to drop their kid off (usually a special box at a fire department or hospital)

Just finishes Blood Over Bright Haven, went to check some goodreads reviews, and people are shitting on M. L. Wang and calling her work "white saviour complex" and "coloniser romance", also saying that her work is a copy of RFK.
And this is why I think reading comprehension is dead, because if you read BOBH and THAT was your take from it, I'm pretty sure you read it with your eyes closed.
Anyway, if yall actually want an amazing dark academia and steampunk-y book with nuanced discussion about societal issues, amazing writing, a morally grey female protag and unique kickass worldbuilding, you should read BOBH by M. L. Wang.

Ever since reading this, I’ve been thinking about it:
I stand by the ocean. There is a ship at the quay… I stand on the beach and watch as it disappears as a speck on the horizon. At that moment, I hear someone by my side speak, “Now she has left us.”
Left us for what? She has only left my line of sight. That’s all. She is as beautiful and sturdy as when she left this beach.
That she has lessened and disappeared is only a matter of perspective, and as the voice from beside me says that she has left us, on another beach, someone watches her appear on the horizon, and another voice yells, “Here she comes!”
…And especially in the context of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
The comparison is fairly obvious when you look at it, but I found this piece to be especially poignant (and as far as I know, the author is unknown. As I’m translating this, I’m also going off of a copy I found online and not the physical I read, so there are some ever so slight differences that may make it resonate less. Apologies.)
It’s particularly haunting to me, and I couldn’t believe that I’d found a piece that was exactly on the mark as far as Tolkien’s Elves and Sailing went, and I mean exactly on the mark emotionally.
It came from an old newspaper clipping, with a bit of an introduction from I believe, a member of the church (this was from a Swedish newspaper, so I’ll love you forever if you can identify the person referencing the poem or any background information, because I sadly can’t remember. Here it is: closer to the abridged version I read in the paper.)
It read something like this: What is death? It is not an end, but a beginning. For as we have to say farewell, there is a chorus of helloes! on some far shore. What is death? It is a ship passing, and as a voice from behind me says, “She is gone now,” on some far shore another says, “Here she comes!”
What is death, but the passing of a boat from one shore to another.
Many thanks to anyone who can help me identify! I felt I needed to share this wonderful, underrated piece with the wider Tolkien Community.
TL;DR: I may write more on the matter, but for now here it is.

i ordered one of the 10th anniversary editions of the southern reach series, acceptance to be more specific only because it was $20 cheaper than authority and, in my mind, without doing any further research, that meant that the cheaper version must have been the older one, thus the next one after annihilation. SO I ORDERED IT. i was so confident❗❗❗❗ the bookstore did me dirty 😭 and also, im stupid

Omg how did I not notice. You like Servamp too!? Bro, mate. My man. I love kuro so much. Best little kitty. I dropped the manga inthe hunter falicity arc but I'd love to get back into it.
!!! yeah i love servamp!!! im a massive fan of chuuni3 (tsurugi, yumi, and jun) especially, as well as mikuni!
the manga is really good sometimes the classical literature references can get pretty dense and specific (though it is more thoughts to have and concepts to ponder!)
im really fascinated by the servamp-eve pair dynamic in a narrative sense; having characters intended to complete one another by holding something the other needs is such a good idea and i like how varied the cast is
i also really enjoy how the themes show compassion as a powerful trait, not a weak one, and violence failing to bridge the gap between people...

Her memory haunts me still.
Decades after I was last in the company of one Haven Desmond and still- Yes, still- her memory haunts me. Her shadow pursues me during each evening ramble within the grounds, her voice sings throughout the foyer when any treasured student deigns to practice upon the pianoforte. Even the rhododendrons on the sill in my bedroom, her favoured bloom.
The gates to her infamous academy have long rusted, the impact of too many harsh winters. In gale conditions this previous autumn, in fact, they flung themselves inward, creating a tortured scraping noise upon the gravel. I awoke with a start on this occasion as, foolishly, I believed her ghost to have taken upon a tangible form. Although, there is no doubt to the matter in which she haunts me regardless.
Violet acts as caretaker now, overseeing the academy’s student body. Without ever teaching a class, she has more power than I could dream of. Myself, I am perhaps stricter than I might have been in my youth. Perfect pitch. if the dazzled faces of my youngest students are any indication. For the most part, I limit myself to the teaching of string instruments- That is, excluding the pianoforte. We admit few students who claim talent in that particular field, you understand. Prodigies grow up, yes, but the notes remain as they always have. Violin is my main co-conspirator.
My hands, now too weak to play, are gnarled and wrinkled with predominant callouses. Hers are still as soft as the days of our youth. Or, at least, such is true to my mind.
Forgive me for I have all but neglected to introduce myself. In my youth, I thought it wonderfully unique to travel under the pseudonym of Wren. Now, the wisdom of age on my side, I respond only to Winnifred Desmond, nee Emerson. Madam Desmond, they call me. Sometimes I wonder if I would respond if not merely turning to search for her.

A New Book on Buster
Today is the office pub date of Lisa Stein Haven’s new book Early Buster Keaton: From the Vaudeville Stage to Comique Films: 1899-1920. This book is of especial interest to this reader as it focuses entirely on Keaton’s vaudeville years, presumably at a much more granular level than most general biographies of Keaton. There is much to be learned from such details. There are many mysterious…

Sanctuary
'There is a quiet corner, spun in light; / you will find me there.' This week's poem is a short but soft one called 'Sanctuary' - you can check it out right here on my blog!
Just a short poem for you today – rather than being from the collection of fantasy poems, or anything to do with the new short story collection I announced next week, this is just a random little poem that I came up with. Still, it’s a soft one, and I hope you enjoy it. Sanctuary There is a quiet corner, spun in light;you will find me there. Touch it: it is soft. It is the equilibriumbetween…
