heyyyy its been a while but I have some more aztec mythology head canons regarding the four tezcatlipocas

Tezcatlipoca: the kind of guy that gets upset if you dont pick up the phone or show up like 2 seconds late for something while never answering the telephone and always showing up late, is thinking miku miku ooeeoo, waluigi on mario kart, rage quit playing knots and crosses with a computer;

Mictlantecuhtli: listens to classical music like its heavy metal and calmly listens to metal like ots classical music, idk why but i think he watches novelas, cinnamon roll, "cant rn, having a tea party with gertrude, shes telling me about her grandkids and how excited she is to see them in dia de los muertos", yoshi in mariokart, the embodiment of that "literally name one thing better than a dog" post if yk what im talking abt;

Quetzacoatl: if he got the golden ticket he would have robbed all of the chocolate in the factory and helped the oompa loompas to make a workers union, toad in mariokart, likes to laugh at conspiracy theories;

Xipe-totec: same vein as mictlantecuhtli with music stuff, great at cooking, baby peach in mariokart, victim of deez nutz jokes;

Huitzilopochtli: do not allow him on the kitchen my man cannot cook for the life of him, "be the reason why the music stops in a videogame", luigi in mariokart, is in the sun deities groupchat and only ever replies with "k." when someone tells him its his turn to be the sun;

YEAH!! i dont have many but i have a few :)

this one is pretty much cannon but he's such a history nerd/buff, but specifically i hc him to utterly adore delving into human history, stuff like greek mythology and or ancient civilizations like the aztecs

i think he'd listen to slow, country, r&b, synthwave type music

specifically for earthspark, he'd have glasses (if cybertronians wear glasses)

I'm gonna use this as an excuse to say what my ethnicity hcs are for all of the virtues as well as the ethnicity of their kingdoms + some reasons why

Pure Vanilla - Greek

Hollyberry - French/Indian (rich food and wine like the french, but a hot, tropical climate with tigers like india.)

Dark Cacao - Korean

Golden Cheese - Egyptian

White Lily - Finnish (Has mythology with paganism, elves, etc)

Shadow Milk - Italian (Carnevale has lots of masks that remind me of him. Most of opera and grand orchestras are Italian also)

Mystic Flour - Chinese (Mandarin specifically, because the Silk Road first brought Buddhism to the north of China, where they speak mostly Mandarin.)

Eternal Sugar - I'm also unsure? possibly Italy as well because of the large Christian significance there.

Burning Spice - Mexican (Aztecs were in what is now Mexico.)

Silent Salt - Unsure as well. I think maybe French, seeing as that is where the concept of chivalry and Knighthood originated.

What languages do you think the Mikaelsons can speak?

So many.

A lot of this discussion is about to be based on headcanons. I will try to point this out every time.

They would have all grown up speaking Old Norse. The village they grew up in was very white for a land that had not been colonized by white people yet, so I have to believe it was a settlement of Norsemen. I like to think they also learned the language of the indigenous people who lived near them. This is a bit of a HC, but based on how they spoke about living at peace with them, I can see it. Either that or they forced the indigenous people to learn Old Norse, which I can also see.

Freya would have also grown up speaking Old Norse with Dahlia.

They then travel to France, where I imagine they learn French since they communicate with Lucien and the rest of the court easily. Especially since Old Norse would not have made them many friends in Europe at this time. I would also like to point out, despite them speaking English on the show, they would not have learned or even heard English at this point. Potentially they ended up in England first, since they could have been in Europe for about a year before running into Lucien, but it would make more sense for them to have ended up in Spain and traveling up since we know they end up in Southern France. So maybe they learned Spanish then too.

After this, they settle in Tuscany, so likely learned Italian. They were in Italy for a long time. I feel confident this is a language they would all remember just for how long they used it.

The show doesn't tell us where they go next, but we know they meet Aya not long after. Based on their clothes and Aya's name, I would guess they are in an Arabic country (somewhere in present day "Middle East"), so they would have learned Arabic as well.

At some point during the 1200s, Elijah, at least, ends up in the Mongolian Empire and recruits Shen Min to the Strix. This could be so many different places since the Mongolian Empire was quite expansive. They were already in the "Middle East," so they may not have fully traveled all the way to present day China, but I would think Elijah could have at least spoken to Shen Min. Whether it was Arabic, or he learned Mongol.

We also can assume Klaus and Elijah spoke a variety of languages, as they created the Sun and Moon Curse and spread it throughout cultures. Elijah mentions Klaus' Aztec drawings, meaning they at least had an understanding of the language.

Elijah goes to Greece briefly to reunite with the Strix. He is there so briefly, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't fully learn the languages. However, he does appear to be someone who picks up on languages quickly so he may have learned a good amount while trying to track down Aya.

The Originals finally settle in England, but there is a lot of missing time we don't know about. Likely while they were traveling spreading the news about the Curse. So we don't know what languages they learned in this time. But they finally, actually, learn English. We know Klaus at least knows a little Bulgarian as he responds to Katerina in her native language. And don't forget the trip Klaus makes to kill her whole family, he likely picked up some phrases on the way. It would make sense for them to go through Bulgaria, as they were traveling from the "Middle East" to England. HC, they likely went through Serbia or Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, than either Belgium or the Netherlands to get to England. Likely, picking up a little of the languages on the way.

After England, the family moves to Denmark so they likely learned Danish. Or at the time it was Middle Danish, which was derived from Old East Norse. I like to think at this point (nearly 500 years since they spoke their native tongue), they were forgetting how to speak it, but they loved Denmark since it revitalized their native language for them.

Around 1500s, Klaus ends up in Russia, just to kill people it looks like, so he probably did pick up some Slavic, but I fear he did not spend a lot of time speaking with the locals. We also have no idea if the rest of the family was with him.

We can assume Klaus met Gaspar Cortez in Malaysia since he is angry at the family for burning down Belaga, Sarawak and Klaus retaliates by killing his whole family. Since Klaus was there enjoying art, I would assume he learned the language enough to get around. It likely would have been Malay at the time. From Russia, to Malaysia, they likely would have spent a lot of time using their Arabic and learning Persian from the Mughals.

In 1702, they are back in Spain, they all definitely speak Spanish fluently. I would think they took a boat to Spain and likely didn't spend extended time in any area.

They flee Spain and end up in New Orleans for 200 years. I like to think they speak French and English in New Orleans, especially Elijah with Celeste.

After that, we know Klaus and Rebekah go to Chicago (still English), but we don't know where Elijah goes. Likely, he flees America to bring Mikael as far away as possible.

Elijah and Klaus reunite in Germany, so they likely both speak it. Elijah, at least enough to get by and talk to Antoinette. I also believe Elijah at some point learned Mandarin as he tells Antoinette to go to Shanghai, it appears he has been their recently.

And of course, Elijah does speak French fluently, which is shown by his time in France in Season 5. Also, Klaus speaks it fluently as well as he spent Season 5 stalking Elijah.

To some it all up:

Elijah and Klaus are likely fluent in: Old Norse, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin (at least Elijah is), German, Middle Danish, Malay.

Elijah and Klaus likely can speak/understand: a couple indigenous languages, Mongol, Bulgarian, Slavic, possibly Hungarian and Austrian

I also think Elijah would have learned Latin at some point for "academic" purposes, but really just to say he can speak Latin.

Rebekah likely would have learned many of the same languages as her brothers. She was often daggered or not shown in flashbacks, but I think she was there for most of the travels, learning right alongside them.

Kol likely speaks many different languages because of his fascination with magic. Even if he didn't directly travel to the places, he likely learned additional languages to read the grimoires. He was also daggered a lot, but he was also traveling on his own a lot, which just don't really know where.

We don't know where Freya and Dahlia ended up, but I think they stayed in the Netherlands for a while and likely weren't exposed to a lot of languages. It's a bit of a HC, but I would think it would be very difficult to learn a different languages every time they woke up when they only had a year.

Finn would have come out of that coffin after 900 years, speaking Old Norse, French, Italian, or maybe Spanish. Maybe Sage was English and taught him when they met, but I'm also confused when they met since he was daggered so early on.

I also believe they've forgotten more languages than they remember since they've lived so long and likely don't use them on regular basis. A lot of the languages they used while traveling, likely they don't remember. Although they could probably pick them up quickly.

This also made me think of a conversation I just had about their accents. It makes no sense for them to have British accents. From what we can tell, they only lived there for maybe 50 years, 500 years before TVD begins. Even Katherine drops her British accent.

I think Elijah's accent makes the most sense. It's not quite anything. It kind of has an old feel but it's not British, it's not American. It's a result of him learning a lot of languages and a lot of accents throughout 1000 years.

I know the writers picked British accents since in America that's how media has decided to depict anything "old." But how would Finn have a British accent?? If anything it should be Italian since they spent so much time there before he was daggered for 900 years. He's never even been to England. The rest of them spent 200 years in New Orleans, why didn't they pick up an American accent?

But, as always, I digress.

oo! i feel like spain is in an interesting position among colonisers and their former colonies; i'm pretty sure, or at least headcanon, that he found pretty much all of his former colonies as chibi's, kind of like china, so they probably don't have as many memories of their native cultures that were stripped from them. that's why they might not bare as intense hatred for spain as someone like vietnam would hold for france.

but there's definately alot of resentment. i think this is especially prominent for peru, who i have often seen characterised as quite in touch with his parent, Inca's, culture and history, and probably wonders what his life might have looked like if he had been allowed to grow up out of spain's iron grip.

i headcanon that latin america, spain's portion of it at least, try to make spain feel as excluded and alienated from what antonio perceives as his 'legacy' in the america's, it's a way to subtly let out some of their repressed resentment towards him.

and on india — you're definately right! i think england and india have a much more snarky? relationship. india is nearly as old as china and was trying to finesse his way through europe's colonial era only to get stuck with this entitled asshole with a superiority complex, that's gotta breed some strong resentment. india is alot like china in the way that he just tolerates those he dislikes for the sake of politics - he's not getting chummy with england unless there's something in it for him.

back to latin american colonisation — i've always characterised mexico as being one of the former spanish colonies that drinks the 'big brother spain' kool-aid. he's not so delusional about colonisation as he is not wanting to recognise how much of a monster spain really was. i can't imagine josé likes to hear or talk about the aztec empire's slaughter at spain's hands; it tears him apart that he lost his actual parent to the only parental figure he knows.

and this definately bleeds into his yandere psyche. mexico doesn't like to confront the reality that any love his darling has for him is manufactured; stockholm syndrome at best, entirely faked at worst. he doesn't like to think of himself as being manipulative or wrong because the implications of that truth are just too much for him to handle.

this is definately where he differs most strikingly from spain; fundamentally, spain isn't able to see the reality of his actions and how wrong they are or how much he's messed up his darling in the process of 'pursuing' them. it's all just a grand romance, his darling is the one with the issues.

josé is definately the type to play into whatever fantasy will best charm his darling, and try to glamourise the relationship "we would make good characters for a telenovela, cariño! we would have so many fans". he likes to compare his actions to others to justify them as well "spain had his own key for your room back in the day" and make intruding on their life seem so normal.

not to mention, piggybacking off my last post, latin america would be a cesspool of yandere's validating each others behaviours. they all picked it up from spain at somepoint, maybe even from each other, so no one bat's an eye when mexico goes on another obsession fueled rant; some countries he's closer to might even offer to help.

the fandom likes to hype up russia and belarus as scary but at least people recognise them as dangerous. latin america is equally as dangerous if not more, imagine being stuck between one, two, or more of them? at least in europe you can pit yandere's against each other, spain raised his colonies as siblings and despite their conflicts they are capable of mass cooperation.

I've shown em before, but they have finally colours YIPEEEE (and yeah my echidna hcs is that there are 4 echidna clans, being the Knuckles clan the most important one and more large compared to the other clans :]

Btw their names do have meanings in quechua (Apu and Q'ori) and maya (Ch'ul), Frown still haven't gotten a proper name yet.

Quetzalcoatl is forbidden from playing baseball because of all the jokes he'd make about hitting Tezcatlipoca out of the sky.

Griffin: I know it’s sort of basic for him cause of his name but Hypogriffs… BUT!!! They symbolize love and impossibility which makes sense cause yknow he has no friends and is invisible which makes him believe he’s impossible to love… IT MAKES SENSE TRUST

Billy: this fits more with my trans fem hc but who cares, Selkie which symbolizes the exploration of identity

Vance: Gorgon, mostly because of Medusa of course meaning that can be interpreted any way, but my train of thought was THAT meaning as well as the fact that Medusa is perceived as evil in some iterations (idk it fits)

Bruce: Kitsune, cause not only is it Japanese but symbolizes intelligence (he’s smart like cmon) long-life (ironic as he it’s the opposite in canon) good fortune (me and many others hc him as rich) and sociable (popular)

Robin: Cipactli, Aztec creature (crocodile, 18 mouths, gods used this creature to make the heaven and the earth, I really like Aztec mythology if you can’t tell) represents growing into something beautiful/beginning life/moving on, I feel like it just makes sense

Finney: Dryads, shy and timid but as they come from the trees durable and strong. Literally symbolize strength and longevity.

Gwen: Phoenix I feel, symbol of hope (guess her not stopping in trying to find Finney) born from the knowledge/experience of difficult times/challenging circumstances (either her home life or the kidnappings all together)

Donna: Nymph? Represents beauty or fragility of the natural world (while it is referring to nature I guess it could be Finney’s thing for her and how it’s like when he was kidnapped and stuff) at least that’s what I’m thinking (also my hc for her and Vance I feel like the fragility of her world specifically when it comes to that)

Loren: Wolpertinger (OKAY HEAR ME OUT ON THIS ONE) German folklore: head of a rabbit, body of a squirrel, deer antlers, a tail and fangs, make by random men for their own amusement and keeps to themselves quietly in forests (it makes sense)

Marie: Ursitory. Romani folklore, it’s three fairies (she can be one) that live hidden in the mountains known for enchanting singing and dancing, and are considered to be symbols of music (trust that it makes sense)

sorry for taking nearly an entire YEAR to answer this lmfao.. i find it very difficult to make hc's for characters that don't really have much myth!! but anyways. this is what i've scrounged up, hope it's okay, and sorry for the wait once again!

there's not that many hcs out there, so please check out my aztec hc's here :)) they're a bit longer i think.

now. i don't believe that the aztec pantheon follows the same sort of monarchy-hierarchy structure that other myths sometimes have,, like, for example, Zeus in Greek mythology is sorta the king of everybody and if you don't do what he says, you'll face the consequences.

in the Aztec myths, there's the Four Tezcatlipocas and, as far as i understand, they're the closest thing there is to like.. a "ruling" body. Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli, and Xipe Totec are the Four Sons of Heaven; they made the world, they rule each of its corners (flat earth era!!!!!!!!!!)

um.. but something i find very fascinating about this group is that they're not strictly related to each other. i mean, in some myth recordings, they're all brothers, but in others, they come from different parents. and i really like the versions that give them different origins. it suggests that they earned their title as a Son of Heaven by merit and not by birthright.

so, with Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca, them being the most well known gods and i think the ones with the biggest roles, i think they're the Duo that really take charge of ruling. of course, Huitzilopochtli and Xipe Totec are also leaders, but Quetz and Tez have the biggest roles.

with Quetz, he has a lot of different origin stories-- sometimes born of a virgin, sometimes because someone swallowed a green stone, in one myth it's the exact same thing as Huitzilopochtli right down to Coatlicue being his mum.

similarly, Tez's parents are vague unless ur accepting the one where he, Quetz, Huitz and Xipe are brothers by blood, sharing the same creator parents.

i personally hc that they are soooo old and ancient, that no one really knows where they came from. they just kinda always were there. and Quetz and Tez may know exactly how they came to exist, but they both like being mysterious and enigmatic, so they just fuel the rumours rather than giving any concrete answer.

their dynamic is a lot like the way i think of Ra and Apep.

EXCEPT, where Apep IS evil and Ra IS goodness, Quetz and Tez are NOT good and bad... they're just opposites.

if Quetz wants to protect mankind, Tez wants to destroy them. if Quetz remains unwed, Tez is a serial dater to the point that he's flirting with other people's wives. if Tez is going to be the Sun, Quetz is going to strike him down. they contrast each other.

this would make it seem like they hate each other and don't get along, but it's actually kinda the opposite. i think they keep each other in check.

now,, most interestingly, in the Aztec creation myth, Quetz and Tez work TOGETHER to destroy Cipactli, the big scary primordial crocodile who prevents the world from being made.

Tez giving his foot up as bait speaks volumes to me about his bravery and ability to be selfless when the chips are down. so i think, if Tez didn't have this factor, then he and Quetz would 100% be straight enemies, fighting all the time.

another thing i wanted to say is that, Quetzalcoatl doesn't have a wife or is listed as having children, and while Tezcatlipoca has a lot of lovers (but not really any one particular wife), i can't recall him actually having children. i think the absence of "biologically"-created children for both Quetz and Tez emphasises my initial point of them being like... each other's balance, their other-half. i don't mean that in a romantic way, i mean like a ying-yang way.

they really have great respect for each other even if they don't always see eye-to-eye.

anyways... i wanted to write some nonsense hc's here, but i remembered i have another Tezcatlipoca hc ask in my inbox, so i'll leave that for that one.

Yk since I like to hc some faith characters as autistic (in this case Gary) partially because anytime my undiagnosed ass tries projecting some of my own traits onto a character they end up being autistic traits but THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS RANT IS ABOUT

WITH GARY I’d like to shove my love of human anatomy and torture/execution methods onto him bc like. Yes he would have a special interest in forms of torture/execution he was AROUND to witness some of them LIVE.

Also I like to think that Gary just finds humans and their anatomy fascinating and finds torture/execution methods as ways of “pushing the human body to it’s limit”

However, since he’s a demon and a cult leader no one wants to listen to him talk about blood eagles, crucifixions, iron bulls, the intricacies of Aztec death rituals, anything relating to torture/execution in general, because they think he’s crazy.
