Top 10 Best BLs on iQIYI

Love For Love's Sake

Korea 2024

This isekai KBL is about a man who must win a game by convincing a reserved teen outcast to fall in love with him. Of course, that teen represents himself and his own unhappiness. Like many queer narratives, this show is actually about self worth, trust, and found family, and it is VERY on the nose. But I don’t expect subtlety from my BL and I enjoyed it's truly lovely redemption arc and earnest performances. While I found the narrative a touch disjointed with overworked filming angles and poorer than average captions, this is certainly much better than early KBL in terms of consistency of tone, script, and immersion. Highly rewatchable and charming, which counts for a lot.

Blueming

Korea 2022

It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL, but if you want your mind ever-so-slightly messed with and your intimacy hellishly sweet, this BL will do it for you in a coldly distant manner, while bitch slapping you with self worth issues. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becoming a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becoming the conflict point. Instead, tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual for Korea, Blueming included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, this is a great BL.

Laws of Attraction

Thai 2023

This is a great gay suspense thriller with several solid couples, fun plot, killer characters, queer rep, and a happy ending. Charn may be my favorite lead character in all BL. However, this show is not entirely BL, more on the fringe, like Manner of Death. There are several "singing incidents" and this pair is a little weak in the chemistry arena, but it's tons of fun. All the triggers tho.

Love Tractor

Korea 2023

Most of this country-set BL had me feral for the beautiful broken city boy and his hot young farmer. Hyung romance, puppy/cat pairing, open frankness meets jaded reserve, language play, water hose frolicking, only one bed, just all my favorite tropes. This show was basically a light-weight Restart After Come Back Home and I’m not even slightly mad about that. But (and you knew there was a “but” coming) something about the cringe of the final 2 eps and the impermanence of the ending (both of which highlight the fact that ultimately these 2 are I’ll-suited: too different and too far apart) left me with the feeling that they probably won’t last as a couple. However, in this case, rare for me, I forgive it this finale for my love of the rest.

Unintentional Love Story

Korea 2023

A boy who just lost his job due to faked corruption charges accidentally discovers his ex-boss's favorite artist, now a recluse. Evil manager offers him his job back if he can convince the artist to rejoin society. Instead, they fall in love. I found the artist a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT - he carried this show (which I do not expect from the idol element). He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict, social tension and pressure is complex and beautifully executed, plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya).

Bon Appetit

Korea 2023

Romance between an office worker the man from his past next door who cooks well. It was very sweet and cute tale of food as love in the All the Liquors family of KBL. I’m not wild about it, I did enjoy it, I was happy to have it show up on my dash, but ultimately it will simply become one of the KBL crowd.

Y-novel adaptation (author Afterday - Bad Buddy) and strong little BL romance (tailor made for SantaEarth) about holding onto first love and childhood, but it’s buried under waffling family drama and formless side characters so that it took a lot of digging to get to - still I recommend it for the killer softly domestic couple chemistry.

A Breeze of Love

Korea 2023

Tsundere insomniac grump reunited with his sunshine jock ex (human sleeping pill) who now hates him. Basketball is also involved. While the simplicity of a reunion plot makes this more cohesive than most KBLs, it is a tad stiff and slow, never managing to lift itself out of "pretty and pretty enjoyable" - I liked it but I don’t think I’m going to remember much about it.

Between Us

Thai 2023

Featuring the hugely popular side characters from 2019′s Until We Meet Again, WinTeam, adaptation of the y-novel Hemp Rope. It’s a serviceable series about hot swimmers flirting and dealing with family drama in a sweetly earnest manner, but ultimately it squanders the talent in play. I would’ve preferred a cleaner narrative arc, less angst and more plot, fewer couples, and a shorter series. That said, there’s nothing objectively wrong, sub-standard, or off-putting about this show. And it has lots of consent and other good qualities. It’s fine.

Dear Doctor I'm Coming for Your Soul

Thai 2022

This is a romance between a doctor trying to save his patients and a reaper who is both his enemy and (eventual) lover (basically the genius premise of a gay Doom at Your Service). High concept looks good on you, Thailand. It’s lovely to see KarnNat back on screen together and they are still great, and Karn is just as painfully beautiful as ever. I enjoyed this one more than it’s ending deserved, and the best I can say is that it’s not strictly HEA but if you’re okay with Life: Love on the Line, you’ll be okay with this BL.

[NEWS] B1A4’s Gongchan will be appearing in an upcoming romance drama!

On June 4, Gongchan’s agency WM Entertainment announced, “Gongchan has been cast in MBC every 1’s new drama ‘Dating is Annoying, But I Don’t Like Being Lonely’ [literal translation], which is scheduled to air in the second half of this year.”

“Dating is Annoying, But I Don’t Like Being Lonely” will tell the story of young people living together who want to date, but are scared of serious relationships—and who want to maintain their freedom, but also dislike being lonely.

Gongchan will be playing the role of Jung Hoon, a top bodyguard who is renowned for his skills in the industry and is assigned to A-list clientele like celebrities and chaebol heirs.

The idol-turned-actor is also currently gearing up to make his feature film debut in the upcoming film “Youngsoo” (working title).

“Dating is Annoying, But I Don’t Like Being Lonely” is scheduled to premiere sometime in the second half of 2020.

When I was on twitter I was mostly seeing support.But the people who I follow and the tweets they liked or retweeted were more from people who were both kpop and khh fans at the same time. So I guess that's why the comments were more positive.

Also, I think a lot of khh do like the whole group or at least the rappers. I think I've seen a few rappers say they'd collab with RM.

If that's true then that's weird to keep them from other kpop idols though. I'd think they'd at least be seen with TXT a lot.

Also, I miss back in the 2nd generation and early 3rd when you'd see so many idols together. Showing up on each others variety shows, performing each other's songs together on stage, and things like that. Shows like Strong Heart and Invincible Youth. When Block B and B1A4 did a show together which is like the weirdest, most unexpected pairing ever LOL. Those days used to be so much fun!

Have you noticed that people are a lot less harsh towards Baro than they are Jinyoung regarding the split? Why do you think this is? Maybe since Jinyoung was the leader ?

Yup, it’s definitely something a lot of us seem to feel. If you wanna waste 15 minutes of your time, you can read my ‘Contract Megapost’ where I literally rant about everything and anything related to the split, though if not (which I’d perfectly understand lmao it’s a LOT) here’s a part I address some thoughts on Baro vs. Jinyoung leaving:

...To take it a step further in my thoughts, I’d also have to be honest and say time has not been as kind to Jinyoung for me as it has been to Baro. By this I mean, initially I felt equally supportive of them both, and respectful in their decisions and paths they chose. While I still respect their choices, and understand full well that they had every right to choose what they did, I suppose my support now, particularly for Jinyoung, has started to falter. I guess the reasons that I felt Baro may have left (i.e., sick of being an idol), seem to coincide with his choice to sign with a non-idol, acting company. Jinyoung’s reasons… don’t seem quite to fit as much. At this point, it seems that he just wanted the power and control that starting and heading a new company would bring. He wants to be able to create the music he wants, without having to necessarily confer with four other members and staff, plus the ability to choose what acting projects he wants, when he wants them. Is it a bit selfish? Yeah, if I’m being honest, I do feel that it is. There was a good possibility he could have haggled with WM enough to be given what he wanted instead of just leaving. But again, he fulfilled the duties he had under his contract with WM, so it is his every right to do what he wants, even if it comes off as transparent.

I think this ‘transparency’ is where my main issues with Jinyoung come in. With every post of his or LINK8′s, every video, every ‘#wewillnotstaysilent’, I just find myself reading right through it. Their motives seem to be very obvious, in wanting to make sure they make it known that they are pushing Jinyoung every single day as much as they can, e.g., giving him the fanmeet very soon after he officially left WM, making him a Season’s Greetings, all the acting gigs he’s been a part of in the few short months they started, the whole ‘J.GROUND’… It’s A LOT. Almost so much, that it can come across as a bit competitive towards WM and A3 in what they post and do. While I hope this isn’t the case as this would just eventually cause more of a divide, there has yet to be any reaching out between the two parties to placate any thoughts over this.

One last point I’d like to make towards Jinyoung and LINK8 is that companies just don’t sprout up (excuse the BANA pun) overnight. Jinyoung didn’t decide to finally leave WM in June, and in the span of a week (or however short of time it was before it was announced he ‘joined’ LINK8) create this new company; he had to have been putting this in the works for months, if not the better part of a year prior to leaving WM. He had to find staff to work with, find a building, create a whole image/vibe he was going for, create and file the name and logo… and a lot more. Even giving him the benefit of the doubt that people approached him, he still would have been involved in getting LINK8 off the ground for quite some time. And, pairing this with the likely idea that he hadn’t told the other members? …Imagine not only find out your leader has decided to leave the company, but has also been putting all his time and resources into creating this entirely new company behind the scenes instead of working to try and keep B1A4 together. I can only speak for myself but shit, I’d be hurt. Again, it is a striking contrast to Baro, who just cleanly left and joined an already established company (whom had likely just approached him around the time of contract negotiations)...

And like I said above, a lot of us just seem to hold this general feeling? I’ve gotten quite a few asks since the split from others about their feelings towards Baro vs. Jinyoung, and the differing harshness in particular, if you want to here what other fans feel too:

The Reason We Can’t Sleep (2017)

Plot:

Kim Young Jae (Im Ji Kyu) and Lee Yoo Jung (Im Se Mi) are neighbors who meet and get off on the wrong foot. She blames him for lack of sleep because he jumps rope outside her window every night at 3am. He blames his lack of sleep on too much energy. As they get to know each other the truth comes out. Will the friendship last?

Music: It didn’t feel like there was a lot of music but there were a couple of really nice songs featured in this drama special - 비행운 (Contrail) by 문문 (MoonMoon) and Today by O.When. The convenience store where Young Jae worked was also constantly playing bops including - SUNMI’s Gashina, Red Velvet’s Red Flavor, Wanna One’s Energetic and B1A4’s Rollin.

Overall:

This is another drama special which is very fitting for the 2020 crowd. Two individuals, of which neither is succeeding at life, both suffering the after effects of life induced insomnia meet in the middle of the night one sleepless night. What happens next is just a nice lite enemies-to-lovers rom-com. It’s a pretty simple story, but it’s nicely done.

It’s not a taxing watch at all. While they don’t solve all their problems it would easily fall into the current trend of “healing dramas”. 

The cast were all familiar faces and the leads were nicely matched together. The chemistry between the leads wasn’t off the charts but I wouldn’t mind seeing them paired up again. 

What I liked most about this was how honest it was about the relationships between the characters, and not just the leads. The nearly 30 year old daughter returned as a burden and a failure to her family whose parents still cherished her despite feeling the burden every day. The house-mate who was unable to face his girlfriend. I thought that the father daughter moments were really nice. I also liked that the relationship between the leads didn’t feel rushed despite the drama clocking in at just over an hour. 

Overall, it was a nice watch and one that most young people or those who aren’t able to fall asleep easily would relate to. I liked it.

Current K-Drama Watchlist

I’m currently watching these shows. I don’t do reviews until I’ve seen the whole show but here are my feelings so far.

Romance Is a Bonus Book

So far I’m loving this classic K-Drama rom com. It’s got cohabitation, a sweet beta male, and a super smart and well-written female lead (who’s 10 years older than the lead!). It’s not entirely creative and the chemistry is a little off, but I’ve been craving an easy-to-watch (and easy on the eyes) k-drama this season! The only thing is that I have major second lead syndrome you guys! Mr. Umbrella with his puppy is just...*hearteyes* Like, can’t they be together instead?

My Strange Hero/ Bok Soo’s Back

My favorite drama this season so far! I was caught by surprise because the synopsis didn’t sound like something I’d like, and it was pitched as a melodrama which just isn’t accurate.Bok Soo’s Back is a charming and lovely romance with a lot of goofiness and humor, but has some very emotional moments as well. It takes place in a school and features student issues AND adult issues, so it’s not a high school romance in the traditional sense. It’s an underdog story where people are allowed to make large mistakes and be forgiven. There are so many great characters to love and root for, a ton of funny moments, really beautifully timed melodrama, and some of the best romance I’ve ever seen: the leads are total OTP material. 

The Crowned Clown

I’m always excited to see Yeo Jin Goo because he’s such a gift, but he really is killing this role! Playing two different characters that look the same, he perfectly captures a damaged and paranoid king, and a sweet and loyal commoner. I don’t watch very many saeguk dramas because I tend to get annoyed with the royal politics, but his acting is just so captivating (that eye contact tho!) that I’m putting up with all of the vying for the power and assassination attempts.

Spring Turns To Spring

In order to enjoy this show, you have to be really into silly hijinks and slapstick, which I’ll admit isn’t my style. It’s pretty kooky and ridiculous and some of the characters are SUPER annoying, though it’s started to get better now that I’m three hours in. I will say Lee Yoo Ri is honestly so awesome and funny as an ambitious and super cocky reporter as well as when she becomes the passive and naive housewife. She is laugh out loud hilarious and I’m watching this for her. I love the idea that by swapping roles, the ladies will probably find a better path for themselves and the whole show is very women-centric! On the other hand, will I make it through all of the goofy switch-a-roos, chasing scenes and that really crappy cheating husband? Jury is out on this one.

Wind-Bell

I think it’s pretty safe to say that if you aren’t watching this for the idols that are in it (B1A4's Jinyoung & AOA's Mina), you probably wouldn’t start watching. Unless of course you are extremely insterested in  Seoul landmarks and tourist locations: 

“Wind-Bell” is a project selected through the “Seoul Story Drama Script Contest” held by the Seoul Metropolitan Government last year”

I’ve watched the first episode which is only 10 minutes long, and it does feel like I’m literally being sold an advertisement for locations and architectural landmarks to visit the next time I’m in Seoul LOL. I have so much to watch, I doubt I’ll finish this one.

Encounter (finished last week)

I just finished this gorgeous noona romance featuring Park Bo Gum and Song Hye Kyo. Park Bo Gum was the perfect manic pixie dream boy, and i loved these two as a pair. They were soft and sweet and perfect OTP material. The other characters also had a lot of depth and were interesting to watch - for instance, the ex-husband was pretty interesting. I will say that even though I can’t find anything to complain about, and the quality of the show was really high...for me there was something missing. I can’t put my finger on it though (I know, super helpful). Maybe it’s that they CUT OFF HIS GORGEOUS HAIR AFTER ONE EPISODE.

Classic Re-Watch: Healer

Normally I choose a classic show I have not seen, to watch along side of currently airing shows but I’ve been working a ton. I cannot BELIEVE I’m openly admitting that I’m actually re-watching Healer. Again. Listen. If you know me, you know my bias. If you know me you know i’ll watch Healer any time and any place. And...I lucked out when my friend said she’d never seen it! (1/2) i still remember discovering honeyst before sf9 haha but they had like 3 songs before they disbanded i'm always so sad when i hear stories like that 😭😭 omg me too!! i just sf9 to have their first win they deserve it already 😭 i really thought it was gonna happen during enough era rip ! i like sensuous (basic) + narcissus even though enough wasn't one of my fav title track! omg that's so cute concerts rly are a magical time hehe also i saw that video they're so pure 😭😭

(2/2) all of my fav groups were at isac and it was just so satisfying to see all their interactions + chan was so cute w everyone did you see the video of chan and rowoon hugging!! chan = tinie 😌 truly RIP b1a4 baro rly tied their sound together imo love his deepass voice 😭 nd yes so many talented idols but so little time to stan them all :( + omg changbin and hwiyoung would be such an awkward pair im amkgjsd i support it —🧬

sometimes her subscribers would offer up names of people on who they would love to see minhee work with and sometimes it happens to someone else. the internet can be a wonderful place connecting people together so it isn’t that hard to find someone to do collaborations on this youtube community minhee is always about working & helping others so she thrives on meeting other talented people and feed off their energy in a way too. one of her followers suggests working with a man named seokjin who’s underground rapper they sent a few of the videos to her too. most duet songs need a good rapper paired with a singer and the song tends to do well with the audience so she took up the suggestion of her loyal follower and contact this “arrowjin”.

for a while, the two social media personalities talk among the messages discussing about working together on a little project before settling on a day on recording the collaboration for them too. the song they decided was two of us who originally sung by B1A4 Baro & Brave Girls Yoojin ( Miss A Min ) she quite excited covering this song since it is a very lovely song to listen to and it’s one of her favs on her playlist. the trainee set up the cameras with two stools against the large windows of the apartment so it will give it lovely natural lighting too and it would look good on camera too. the apartment pretty much has very good acoustics too so everything should work out pretty well but it is whatever jin would be comfortable doing either sitting or standing. all she can do now is wait for her partner in this project to show up so they get to ready to shoot this thing as she was certainly eager to get this show on the road..

You looked at him and then beckoned him over, your boyfriend happily obliging, sitting down on the bed beside you. You instantly slipped your arms around his waist and yanked him down, both of you giggling as you re-positioned each other in the bed. Once settled against his chest, you almost purred in content. 

“This will be a perfect way to spend the day, right?” you asked and Junghwan nodded.

He couldn’t think of anything better.
