Woolen Hollow sounds so intriguing and draws me in!! Tell me about it!!
Okay so Woolen Hollow is my fantasy novel that I got 10k into and then realized it was boring so I set aside the draft and started over but this time in 1st person POV (which I've never written in before) to give it a more engaging voice and I started with them already on the road rather than dinking around at home and I like it sooooo much better now. Unfortunately I've only written just over 1k because other things have the priority rn
But there is magic! The kind you control and the kind that controls you. And there is love! The kind between siblings (for better or for worse), between two boys lost in the woods and the world, and between a girl and her sheep. And there is a conniving lying cheat of a fiance who thinks she's hot shit but is ultimately going to be taken down by a closeted shut-in who will carry the guilt of scrambling her noodle for the rest of his life. There will be choices and consequences and lots of bickering and banter because I'm still me.
Anyway, meet Midge and Jax!
*
“Sweet soil, Midge. Keep it down or they’ll think we raised you with the sheep.”
I don’t pause my cursing for a second as Jax squats in front of me where I’m sat, filthy and tear-stained, at the base of the tree that did me wrong. He reaches for my arm but a hard boot to his knee knocks him on his ass and gives me precious seconds to come to terms with the hot, sharp pain radiating from my forearm.
Jax shakes his hair out of his eyes and glares. “The longer you drag this out, the further behind we’re going to fall and you know none of them will wait for us.”
“You’re not even supposed to be here,” I spit. I draw my arm against my chest and press back into the tree as he gets to his knees. “This is my thing. You should be at home in your closet.”
“Did I hallucinate your last ten birthdays? You sound like a child.” He reaches for me again. “Hold still. I need to see how bad it is.”
With grit teeth, I hold very still.
Jax sighs. “You are the most obstinate— Let me see it.”
With great reluctance, I uncurl from around my arm and hold it aloft for him to see. It looks fine. Normal. There’s some blood on my sleeve but that’s from earlier when I had to chase Sarsaparilla out of the bramble. I’ll be up for hours tonight combing the stickers from her wool while she’s too drowsy to put her usual fight.
With deft fingers, Jax unties the leather cord that keeps my sleeve flush against my skin, both for insulation and to keep from leaving tattered bits of cloth all through the forest, and rolls back my sleeve.
I suck in a sharp breath and look away. Blood I can handle. Feces, fine. Snot, sweat, sheep urine, and other various oozes and slimes—bring it on.
But bodies bending where they should not? Lumps that speak of damage unseen under the surface, broken with no clear simple treatment? It makes my skin crawl.
Jax clicks his tongue. “You got yourself good, smidgling.”
“Take your dirt nap, jaxass.”
He ignores me. “I have some [APOTHECARY STUFF] in my pack. It’ll help with the pain and swelling. If you take [MORE APOTHECARY STUFF] and let me splint it, it should be usable by next week.”
“That’s forever. There’s so much I have to—,”
“I can’t work miracles,” he snaps. “I’m telling you what I can do.”
He juts to his feet and towers over me, but not in an intimidating way. More like a stick bug—all bones with no meat—or a single reed in a field of clover, doomed to be slapped around in the wind without the protection of a bed. If he didn’t hole himself up with his cauldron day in and day out, he’d be as broad as Ham. Instead, he’s thin, whippy, and about as threatening as a cooked noodle.
I stagger to my feet and don’t bother trying to swat away the dirt that clings to my pants. Sudden movement makes a shooting pain fly up my arm, through my shoulder, and into my teeth. You only chew tin foil once before you learn to not fucking do that.
“Let’s catch up to the group. Maybe Ham can grow me a new arm. I bet it’ll only take a minute.”
Jax makes a sour face and turns on his heel. His long-legged stride takes no consideration for my short quick steps. “If we’re lucky he’ll grow you a new head while he’s at it.”
The rock I kick ricochets off his ankle and disappears into the forest but he doesn’t give me the satisfaction of looking back.
Brothers.

It's amazing to me just how good the Mormon church has been at hiding just how bad they really are from public view. Even the shit that gets spread around is the relatively harmless bullshit. They had a crazy prophet with magic glasses. They believe in god-mandated polygyny. They think everyone who is good enough will get their very own planet after the world ends. They wear magic underpants. Mormon men are all paladins.
Here's one of the ones you hear less often:
See, like many other Christian sects, the Mormons really do believe that the existence of Christ obviates the existence of Judaism. Judaism was just a placeholder until the "real" church could be established by Jesus.
And the Mormons in particular believe, dead ass, that the entire inheritance of Israel has been given to them, because the Jews failed to recognize the Messiah when he was on Earth. They really do. They have this whole system where people are given a "divine revelation" about which of the Tribes of Israel they're a member of (don't worry, they decided that most people belong to the two tribes that are willing to "adopt" people. Only the most specialest boys and girls are members of the original ten).
Let's sum up so far. The Mormons believe that they are the people of Israel, chosen and protected by God. If Jews want to get back in on that party, they can always repent and convert to Mormonism, the one true church to which God gave all the rights and blessings that were originally bestowed on Abraham's house.
But it doesn't stop there!
The Mormons also believe, in all seriousness, that all Indigenous peoples of the Americas are descended from a small group of Jewish people who left just before the fall of Jerusalem (~600 bc iirc). Their entire weird-ass extra bible is a chronicle of those people's history in [unspecific part of America]. At the very beginning of the book, two brothers in the original family turn away from god, so they and all their descendants are cursed with dark skin, so that the good Nephites (who remain "white and delightsome") will always be able to tell themselves apart from the wicked Lamanites.
So, you've got supposedly Jewish people running around the Americas. And the "good" ones are white, and the "bad" ones are brown. Then, ofc, Jesus comes to visit them (I guess supposedly that's part of what he was doing during his dirt nap? Or possibly after he left again, it's not clear), and they all convert to Christianity, which they think is clearly the natural evolution of Judaism. Well, at the end of the book, all of them become wicked, in a kind of weird pseudo-apocalyptic series of events. They are all cursed with dark skin, until such time as they repent for their ancestors sins and return to the gospel.
But of course, Mormons being the good and kind people they are, they want everyone to receive the blessings of God and be brought into the houses of Israel etc etc. And it isn't the fault of those poor little Indigenous children that their distant ancestors turned away from God and became wicked.
So what's the natural answer? Well, Mormons are real big on missionary work, as we all know. But apparently that wasn't enough in this case.
Because the Mormon church has been one of the big players in abducting as many Indigenous children as possible, in order to indoctrinate them into being good Mormons, so that they can turn white again and be blessed. My mother remembers hearing talks about this in the 70s and 80s. The church literally had a "Lamanite Adoption Program," where families in the church were encouraged to get as many Indigenous children as possible away from their families and not let them be reunited until they were fully assimilated and ready to go back and proselytize about how wonderful the church is.
The church leadership literally talked about how wonderful it was to see these children becoming whiter. Actually whiter. Like, saying that when they finally saw them with their families again, it was beautiful how much paler they were.
I'm pretty sure this program has been officially ended, but it doesn't take a genius to speculate about who might be behind the curtains on the movement in the western US to gut the ICWA....
So yeah. Next time someone tries to tell you that the Mormons are just harmless weirdos, please remember that they're an antisemitic cult that advocates for the forced assimilation of Indigenous children to help them escape the cursed brown skin of their ancestors.

"You just don't get her deep lyricism and her poetic plays on words—"
Yup. You're right. I don't get it.
Because how am I supposed to get it, when the beat puts me to sleep? How am I supposed to get it when all 31 songs somehow manage to blend into one?
You want me to listen to the lyrics, but I'm too busy nodding off.
I don't give a rat's ass if Taylor Swift is some sort of lyrical genius (which I know she isn't), because if I wanted only good writing I'd pull out a fucking poetry book.
Taylor Swift is a singer. You know, a song artist.
Who makes music. Who is regarded by Swifties as this amazing, misunderstood genius. She's 'objectively good'.
But I say that to be objectively good at music, you're supposed to be able to take care of the lyrics and the rhythm.
You're supposed to be able to both write well and have a good beat in the background. Preferably, one that doesn't sound the exact same as the previous five.
I'm not under any circumstances saying that every song has to have both. Not at all.
But if an album of 31 songs is to be considered actually good, then it better have both to an extensive degree.
There should be variation. There should be something to make it interesting, to pick up the pace.
Now before the whataboutisms kick in, I'm not saying that you can't enjoy it. I'm not saying that it can't be your favourite.
I'm fucking saying that you have no right to act as if we're the crazy ones because we don't "get it".
Or, or, or maybe, have you considered that for some of us, there's nothing to get.
We're not stupid, nor slow. We know what a damn metaphor is. We get what she's trying to say.
But just because there's meaning in something doesn't mean it's good, or smart, or interesting.
'You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum that they raised me.'
Mhm. Yes, Taylor, tell me more about how your parents brought you to Nashville to get famous because you wanted to. About a deliberate choice that you made and keep making, even though that line implies that you had no say in the matter.
Fascinating. How difficult it must be to have a billion dollars lying around in your bank accounts.
That's just cringe worthy.

this informational piece is directed to the gale fandom specifically:
grooming is a tactic where someone methodically builds a trusting relationship with a child or young adult, their family, and community to manipulate, coerce, or force the child or young adult to engage in sexual activities.
1. Choosing a victim - The predator often chooses a child who is obviously vulnerable. Children who are withdrawn, low on confidence, emotionally deprived and with less parental supervision are particularly at risk.
2. Building access & trust - Sexual abuse often begins with friendship. The abuser can also take on other roles such as a romantic partner, a mentor, a caregiver or an authority figure. The abuser spends time in getting to know the victim's likes, dislikes and habits and pretending to share common interests. The perpetrator establishes trust with the child by making them feel special, sometimes through gifts or excessive compliments and attention. This is especially dangerous for vulnerable children who do not experience attention in their daily lives. In the trust development stage, offenders aim to develop a trusting friendship or relationship with their victim. This can involve several tactics, including:
a) praising the child for their maturity and intelligence;
b) encouraging the child to disclose personal information;
c) syncing their language with that of the child;
d) highlighting mutuality (i.e., similar interests, attitudes and behaviors between the offender and child); and finally,
e) portraying themselves as being trustworthy and nice.
3. Filling a need with gifts & favors - Giving the victim small gifts and favours is a strategy used by perpetrators to make the child feel indebted. Trust is further built by sharing intimate life details, going on special outings and giving the child access to things they normally wouldn’t get. Once the offender has identified a child’s needs, they will try to be the “hero to the child who gives them what they desire. Examples include gifts, extra attention, or affection. This causes the child to see them as highly important and even idolized. They won’t want to upset them in risk of not getting the void in their life fulfilled.
4. Isolating - The groomer actively tries to isolate the child from people who may be watchful or helpful. This kind of isolation creates deeper connection & dependency. The offender also exhibits exemplary behaviour before parents of the victim & manipulates them into trusting the relationship. They will use this trust to create situations in which they are alone with the child. Time spent alone also reinforces the “special connection” the child feels they have with the offender. This “special connection” is further reinforced when the offender convinces the child that they love and appreciate them more than anyone else.
5. Initiating sexual contact - With the power over the child victim established through emotional connection coercion or one of the other tactics, the perpetrator may eventually initiate physical contact with the victim. It may begin with touching that is not overtly sexual (though a predator may find it sexually gratifying) and that may appear to be casual (arm around the shoulder, pat on the knee, etc.). Gradually, the perpetrator may introduce more sexualized touching. By breaking down inhibitions and desensitizing the child, the perpetrator can begin overtly touching the child. At this stage, the offender will exploit a child’s natural curiosity through physical touch and excitement. They will begin to teach the child sexual preferences and manipulate what the child responds to. The child begins to see themselves as a sexual being prematurely and the relationship with the offender now takes on a sexual term.
6. Post-abuse maintenance - The goal of the final stage is to ensure the child remains trapped in the cycle of abuse and loyal to the abuser, by either reinforcing and maintaining trust in order to prevent disclosure, or by explicitly threatening or blackmailing the child or their loved ones. This can also be reinforced and maintained by, for instance, giving the child affection, praise or encouragement for one’s actions.

A common question and critique, both in feminist literature and in (online) feminist spaces, is ”Why aren’t the good men doing more for women? Why are they still so passive despite being the 'good' ones?”
Okay, so the answer is actually pretty simple.
At best, these self-proclaimed or so-called "good men" don’t care as long as it isn’t inconvenient for them personally.
At worst, they either secretly or openly enjoy women‘s oppression, humiliation, violation — both due to mere sadism and due to the fact that they actively benefit from it, personally as well as systemically.
That‘s why "good men" are nearly non-existent. Some might be allies when it comes to certain topics (though probably not for genuine women-oriented reasons, and yes, intention matters), however, they‘ll still be misogynistic and oppressive in other ways, or tolerate those who are.
And the concept of a "good men" who‘s "passive" is completely ridiculous. If you, as a member of the oppressor class who‘s advantaged by our systemic & worldwide oppression all the damn time, think that not doing anything makes you "good", you‘re merely a bystander, and hence a (silent) enabler. Not a "good man who‘s just being passive".
Silence is complicity.
They don’t deserve to be labelled as "good". Not harming us with their own hands is the barest minimum. And we deserve to raise our standards, and we also deserve that our sisters raise theirs.
Women for Women. That‘s it. That‘s the only way.

Kaeyappreciation post!
Kaeya is wonderful in a sense that he:
Has a penmanship described as "Beautiful Handwriting". He for sure worked on that.
Willingly spends his time making sure his outfit looks perfect
Is well-loved by Mondstadt and the Dawn Winery staff
Is described to like a prince, both in looks and in actions
Is shown to be gentle and caring to children and elderly, most seen with Klee and the staff from Dawn Winery
Is a great listener and, therefore, also knows what gifts to buy based off of something someone said in passing
Is predominantly kind- unafraid to help out and defend someone in need. His first reaction is always kindness, and worry about covering up that kindness later on
But Kaeya also has his moments where he:
Says things out of pocket with enough alcohol in his system. Things that usually lead to shame and regret.
Would rather give others the credit for his hard work if he could help it
Intentionally makes himself look suspicious by withholding information and only throwing tidbits that are not of substance
Has sadist tendencies, which affects how he treats both his (cavalry) company and his enemies
Can and will use underhanded tactics to gain the upper hand
Rarely ever says what he truly wants to say
Has a fake smile. Usually lies or only deals with half truths.
He is such a complex character. I really do want people to appreciate him and his intricacies more. The fact that his entire personality and story is done so well and continues to actually grow and expand as the story progresses is something that genuinely makes me want to keep watch of him. I have never, in all my fandoms, stuck to a character as long as I did with Kaeya, and honestly? I know I'm not alone with this.
Look at how well they made our boy!
