We share our planet with over 1400 species of bat, making the second most abundant mammal order, and they perform a wide variety of ecological roles, from dispersing seeds to pollinating flowers to eating thousands of insects in a single night! Over 200 bat species are listed as Threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature--that is over 14 percent of all bats!

You know, I bet all the things are called things like Batcave, Batmobile, Batcomputer, etc, because of the kids Like at first it was just a couple of things, and it became almost like a tradition where each time a kid found the Batcave they’d name a few more things. Batarangs, Batbombs, Batchair, whatever caught their eye that didn’t have a bat-name already.  Then, they get another new sibling. Lil Cass comes around and they’re teaching her how to talk and she added bat as a prefix to everything in the batcave (and some outside it).  That is the batfloor now, and the batpaper, and batgloves, and no one is going to tell her it isn’t. If it's in the batcave, it must have bat in it, and it all went down (or up depending on who you ask) from there

I pipistrelli furono usati come armi segrete? Pipistrelli Bat Bomb: un costoso fallimento dei servizi segreti e degli scienziati USA impegnati a costruire armi micidiali durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Per i pipistrelli, così sotto osservazione perché si sospetta che il nuovo coronavirus Sars-CoV-2, responsabile della Covid-19, arrivi da loro, non è mai stata vita facile. Nel loro curriculum vitae di mammiferi volanti bruttini e inquietanti - benché molto utili all'agricoltura e nonostante si cibino anche di insetti per noi molto fastidiosi, come le zanzare) - c'è anche un'esperienza in cui furono utilizzati come armi sperimentali: le cosiddette Bat Bomb.

Mammiferi al napalm. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, tra i tanti progetti bizzarri concepiti dai servizi segreti americani (e che non andarono a segno), ce ne fu anche uno che prevedeva l'uso di pipistrelli della specie Tadarida brasiliensis, grandi pochi millimetri e del peso massimo di 13 grammi. L'idea era questa: all'interno di contenitori a forma di bomba lunghi 23 cm venivano disposti migliaia di pipistrelli ibernati, ciascuno dei quali dotato di un piccolo dispositivo incendiario al napalm (altra invenzione USA dell'epoca) programmato con un timer. La Bat Bomb, sganciata dai bombardieri sull'area e rallentata da un paracadute, si sarebbe riscaldata durante la discesa, risvegliando i suoi ospiti.

La Bat Bomb: il contenitore-bomba lungo 23 cm conteneva migliaia di mini-pipistrelli al napalm da sganciare sulle case giapponesi durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. | Wikipedia A 1.500 metri di altitudine circa, la Bat Bomb si sarebbe aperta e oltre un migliaio di pipistrelli sarebbero volati in un raggio di 30-60 chilometri, per poi posarsi sulle case in legno e carta dei giapponesi, altamente infiammabili. I dispositivi al napalm sarebbero stati innescati contemporaneamente, provocando migliaia di incendi.   Obiettivo in fiamme. Il risultato del primo test, condotto nel maggio del 1943 nel deserto del Mojave, fu uno schianto (letteralmente): 35.000 pipistrelli ibernati, caricati su un bombardiere B52 e sganciati a 1.500 metri, si spiaccicarono ancora congelati al suolo. Al test successivo alcuni si risvegliarono e colpirono l'obiettivo (un villaggio finto), altri invece tornarono all'hangar di partenza, che, insieme agli uffici e alla torre di controllo, bruciò sotto gli occhi dei militari. Il terzo test in programma fu cancellato nel 1944. L'operazione pipistrelli costò al governo degli Stati Uniti circa 2 milioni di dollari dell'epoca, circa 30 di oggi. Read the full article
