i have once again become absolutely insane about the odazai scene in bar lupin bc like. dazai is never this sincere, this open. as a general rule he is more open and genuine with oda than he is with other characters, but even then the beast lupin scene was a whole different level. and what gets me is this is all coming from a place of such sheer desperation. dazai, at the end of all that he's wrought, finds himself so desperately wanting, so desperately hoping, that oda will understand why he did what he did, that oda will see where he's coming from. he prepared for this, he literally bet on the fact that oda would not know him, would not care about him, would not like him or consider him a friend bc that's what dazai had to do to keep him safe, to keep the world where he can live and write novels from disappearing. and yet, faced with the actuality of that exact situation he's created... dazai can't help but beg oda to understand the reason for his actions
he wanted this. he planned for this. and as hard as that was for him to do, i don't think he could have ever fathomed how much it would hurt to truly be confronted with the reality of it

man beast!zai had it ROUGH 😭
he didn't want to be the leader of the Port Mafia, but had to take on the role at 18
he was running out of time in the beast world because of the Guild and the Rats fighting for the Book in the original world, and if either factions got their hands on it, the beast world would be overwritten
the people he had to tell about the beast world and the original world was beast!sskk so they could work together, so he knew his own time was running out but nothing could be done about it
the despair he must've felt after meeting with Oda, knowing he still had to carry out his plan
plus the fact it must've weighed on him heavily knowing that he had this knowledge of the original world but couldn't just share it with whoever. like, makes me wonder along with Oda, Atsushi, and Akutagawa obviously all being on different sides, what he thought about his original self being with the ADA instead of staying with the PM
Mori's words at the end about how a certain young man came to him with a death wish and Mori wanted to save him, but couldn't
then the icing on the cake is what happens with Chuuya in the end basically going mad with grief, like...Dazai wouldn't have wanted that fate for him at ALL, but logically, what could he do about it—if he told Chuuya his reason for what he was doing, the world could've destabilized and maybe Dazai didn't want to risk being stopped
I love-hate beast so much 😭 great light novel but whyyy

It's kind of interesting to learn that both Akutagawa (in BEAST) and Kyouka (in the original) stated their dislike for dogs, ngl.

the ending of beast with chuuya in chains or whatever means nothing to me. that ending isn't real and it can't hurt me. instead,
it was another normal stupid day and chuuya was on another normal petty mission to fix who-knows-what. trouble at the docks, intimidating rivals encroaching on territory, you name it. whatever it was, it was far below his rank and definitely dazai's version of busywork.
of course, eventually the mess back at headquarters reaches him. it takes a while, subordinates were under a gag order to keep him out of it. everything is coming to a head by the time he gets back. he wasn't in any real rush, of course. dazai could do with a good kick to the head from that troublesome agency. but when there's no response to a phone call or three, he's a little uneasy. on edge. something is really wrong.
he sees the body falling from a distance. he could have made it, maybe, if he could have run the speed calculation. if he didn't freeze in shock. if he paid a little more attention. if, if, if,
he pulls the scarf from the corpse before anyone else makes it to the scene, before anyone else can see him there, can see his failure.
how dare the bastard manage to die and he wasn't even there to push him off.
everyone knows not to mention the dirt, nor the bloodstains, on the new boss's scarf.

Smth about beast whump is so good...
Anjd also opposite sides and Reluctant Caretaking...
SPOILERS FOR ALL OF BSD BEAST
I need to see beast Atsushi finding beast akutagawa collapsed and taking akutagawa to the orphanage and trying to take care of him (it's mostly Mori doing that but !! Let Atsushi believe he's helping lots)
ugh this is so cute i love beast in general so so much but beast akutagawa is so special to me...i love beast atsushi trying to take care of him because he's so afraid of hurting him by accident so he's unbelievably gentle with him...and this atsushi knows about akutagawa's past and his life in the slums so he's much more understanding of certain things, like being afraid of waking up in unfamiliar places...beast akutagawa waking up with a high fever and atsushi trying so hard to comfort him and help him feel better without confusing him too much ow

Again, reply at your convenience.
If canon Dazai goes BEAST AU mode and that's how the manga ends, i'll find it a very depressing ending. Since many say that BSD is about hope and improvement, so stuff like that would feel really sensationalist, cheap and cowardly to me. I prefer a hopeful story so much more; hope is what betters the world and keeps us going after all. And BEAST is all about Dazai terminally succumbing to his narrow worldview and depression, losing all hope for other paths to happiness and belonging, traumatizing others along the way 😔
If Dazai does go BEAST mode, I want some suicidal / depressed / troubled characters to obtain a happy ending solely by getting life - changing epiphanies and growing into wiser, smarter, more skilful people. Sure, let some characters break completely and get bad endings, but show how they had actual paths to a better life if they could've avoided giving in to negativity and rigidity ( Many of them will have to break free of this Dazai's influence / legacy to achieve this) :
Kyouka and Atsushi taking charge of their life and happiness instead of unwillingly risking severe PTSD, depression and death due to their sense of worthlessness and due to being bound to the ADA. Akutagawa realizing his worth and the value of his life, becoming independent and happy. Kenji being free from his trauma. Sigma becoming competent and street smart enough so nobody can use him like a pawn, and finding a peaceful safe home. Kunikida realizing how shitty it was to be initially uncaring of Atsushi and Kyouka, learning to live for himself too instead of only living to be good, and learning to prioritize living breathing people over his ideals.
Now that will be an actual meaningful and inspiring story, not some trauma - porn tragedy bullshit. If I wanted BSD to be meaningless torture porn, I would've watched Saw instead.
I suppose I can’t really answer this to the best of my abilities until I actually read Beast.
But, like, as far as I can tell, isn’t beast supposed to at least semi-hopeful for everybody but Dazai. And even then it’s implied he sacrificed himself so everybody else could have a better life. Yeah it’s sad, but in canon there are other characters who have already done similar things who were also doing bad mentally. Like Oda. Kind of. And he gets his happy ending in beast. And Akutagawa gets the chance to be a better person. And I could be very wrong here, but aren’t Atsushi and Kyouka still implied to possibly be on their way to joining the ada in beast? Like it feels entirely possible that everyone can still change in that universe. Can still improve their lives. Just not.. Dazai…I guess. In a way Beast itself could be said to be about hope, if you’re looking at the right characters.
Anyways what I’m trying to say is I think it’s a matter of perspective. Beast is better for some characters, worse for others. Which feels… realistic? I guess? It might even be the only universe where Fukuchi doesn’t win. Probably Not. But we don’t know that yet.
Also I’m not actually sure how I personally think it’s going to end. That’s the really fun thing about bsd, despite it being inherently derivative due to every character being based on exsisting people, characters, and works, it’s actually one of the most unique things I’ve ever read. You never really know where it’s going.
Alas, one day I will actually read the beast light novel instead of going off of all of the spoilers I’ve heard and the few chapters I read of the beast manga like last year, and then I will have a fully formed opinion on this.

Can’t believe it’s canon that Dazai committed morally questionable actions on a cosmic scale just so he could make sure Oda got the life he wanted. Like Asagiri isn’t even attempting to hide how hopelessly in love he is

A tale of a love from long ago

🍂Hadestown vibes for Beast Soukoku 🍂Angst, bittersweet ending 🍂+12k, 5+1 🍂Dazai is whipped
Dazai is not stupid enough to hide the fact that Chuuya is pretty, sharp features and eyes framed by long eyelashes. Freckles across pale skin and that soft hair that turns bronze under the right light. His gorgeous and, under Kouyou’s hand, the last traces of street urchin had been hidden under yukatas and the right amount of makeup lining those mesmerizing eyes. Right now, sleeves rolled up his elbows and a cigarette between his teeth, he looks far away from the elegance Kouyou is trying to impose on him. But there’s something beautiful in the strange mixture of elegance and Chuuya’s rudeness. It shouldn't be so fitting, but even this looks good on him. He looks good on his dark blue yukata; he looks good with makeup smuggled around his eyes and lipstick-stained cigarette between his gloved fingers. “What the fuck do you want mackerel?”
