The Bastard Kings and their families
This is series of posts are complementary to this historical parallels post from the JON SNOW FORTNIGHT EVENT, and it's purpouse to discover the lives of medieval bastard kings, and the following posts are meant to collect portraits of those kings and their close relatives.
In many cases it's difficult to find contemporary art of their period, so some of the portrayals are subsequent.
1) John I of Portugal (1357 – 1433), son of Peter I of Portugal and Teresa Lourenço; with his wife, Philippa of Lancaster (1360 – 1415), daughter of John of Gaunt and his wife Blanche of Lancaster
2) His father, Peter I of Portugal (1320 – 1367), son of Afonso IV of Portugal and his wife Beatrice of Castile
3) His sister, Beatrice of Portugal (c. 1354–1381), daugther of Peter I of Portugal and his wife Inês de Castro
4) His brother, John of Portugal (1352 – c. 1396), son of Peter I of Portugal and his wife Inês de Castro
5) His brother, Ferdinand I of Portugal (1345 – 1383), son of Peter I of Portugal and his wife Constanza Manuel de Villena
6) His sister in law, Leonor Teles de Meneses (c. 1350 – c. 1405), daughter of Martim Afonso Telo de Meneses and his wife Aldonça Eanes de Vasconcelos
7) His niece, Beatrice of Portugal (1373 –c. 1420), daughter of Ferdinand I of Portugal and his wife Leonor Teles de Meneses
8) His niece, Isabella of Portugal (1364–1395), daughter of Ferdinand I of Portugal and an unknown woman
9) His daughter with Philippa of Lancaster, Isabella of Portugal (1397 – 1471)
10) Left:
I. Eleanor of Aragon (1402 – 1445), daughter of Ferdinand I of Aragon and his wife Leonor de Albuquerque; and wife of Edward I of Portugal
II. Isabella of Coimbra (1432 – 1455), daughter of Peter of Portugal and Isabella of Urgell; wife of Afonso V of Portugal
III. Edward I of Portugal (1391 – 1438), son of John I of Portugal and his wife Philippa of Lancaster
IV. John II of Portugal (1455 – 1495), son of Afonso V of Portugal and his wife Isabella of Coimbra
V. Afonso V of Portugal 15 (1432 – 1481), son of Edward I of Portugal and his wife Eleanor of Aragon
Right:
I. Ferdinand of Portugal (1402 – 1443), son of John I of Portugal and his wife Philippa of Lancaster
II. John of Portugal (January 1400 – 1442) son of John I of Portugal and his wife Philippa of Lancaster
III. Peter of Portugal (1392 – 1449), son of John I of Portugal and his wife Philippa of Lancaster
IV. Henry of Portugal (1394 – 1460), son of John I of Portugal and his wife Philippa of Lancaster
Note: In the last picture, the Panel of the Prince or the Infante and the Panel of the Knights from Nuno Gonçalves' St. Vincent Panels, the identity of some of the members of the Royal family it's still discussed, like the man identified as Edward I in the Panel of the Prince is his brother Henry, but we're considering the interpretation of the people of the panel being Afonso V with his parents, wife and heir, and the ones of the Panel of the Knights are Edward I's brothers, although by the time the panels were painted most of them have already died.

So about that scene in WN where Beatrice is reading that journal entry to Ava...
I’ve only watched Warrior nun once this weekend, but I went back to rewatch this scene in particular and, there is just SO SO much to unpack from the suitcase this scene dropped on my lap
1. Ava being like daamn she's translating straight from french that's hot (ava is someone who has effectively so far, missed on her entire life, missed on the most basic stuff walking, sensory tactile daily input, socialization outside of abuse. So she's truly getting to know and see and experience everything for the first time, she is hungry for living and knowing and finding out. So in this sense ofc it makes absolute sense that she'd be attracted to Beatrice who is pretty much a walking library, she's attracted to her on an instinctual level from moment one, she's just not rationalized yet that she is, but the magnetism is there)
2. Ava repeating the word lesbich, because ofc her golden retriever brain would be like hey I know a whole new word and in a foreign language how cool is that?!! While also being painfully unaware that that word carries so much weight and pain for Beatrice and must be likely cringing internally to have the object of her affection just throwing the word around like it's nothing
3. Ava's 'yeah she did!'. Once again reaching only an initial level of analysis and being excited because the nun in the story is a bada$s who just won't put up with abuse, cause in her eyes that must be literally so cool therefore violence and retribution is righteous.
4. And then being crestfallen when she's notices Beatrice strong reaction to the whole story, then she's capable of grasping a deeper level of understanding of everything that's behind. It's not just retribution, it's hatred and fear and abject pain. She gets a glimpse of the other side of the coin, what the nun in the story/Beatrice deals with. A blinding rage, and overwhelming pain. It's not justice driving the sword, it's trauma. Her facial expression switched in seconds as does her approach to the rest of the story.
5. Now she's able to see a connection between the warrior nun in this journal and Bea, she knows it is something primal but still can't put her finger exactly on what, yet she can feel that an immense pain is the thread that weaves both the story and Bea's visceral response to it.
6. Bea's realization that she's isn't the only one, she's not the only gay warrior sister. Up to this point I'm sure she must have felt isolated even inside her religious community, which became her family. They know who she is, but they don't know her completely. But there was someone just like her, through time, even at the distance she's not alone,  and she can also reach that feeling of being fully herself and at peace (I’ll forever wonder how Bea related to Shanon and Mary about this specific point).
7. Bea being pissed at Ava's obliviousness. Ava being so close to the central theme of the story but still failing to connect they last final dots, which would save Bea an enormous amount of time working to an admission or confession of her love (which we actually didn't get, only after Ava was gone. Not even when Ava kissed her, not even when Ava took the leap and actually said I love you. Bea just wasn't going to be able to take those steps on time), if Ava could just realize by herself what Bea is feeling for her... But she doesn't and then Bea snaps because rly ava?! C'mon work with us here.
8. Bea's gut wrenching admission that she became an academic overachiever to compensate for being gay. Now this is actually personal to me and I'm sure to most of the queer community, we've been there. Bea at some point literally felt she had no value as a person, only through discipline and excellence in everything she does :’(  she probably still feels that way, up until meeting Ava.
9. Bea dead a$s saying: 'What (who) you love, what (who) should make you happy only brings you pain'... while looking directly at ava.... Ava, sweaty, darling, honey baby, adoptive child of literal divine light, god’s chosen champion... my sister in Christ. Bea is pouring out her bleeding heart, looking straight into your eyes, admitting that even tho she loves you and you make her happy, you bring her pain. And in so many ways, as a christian believer/nun who's been told her whole life that being gay means your are doomed and automatically going to super hell, as a young queer woman who has gone to the almost ultimate stage of self denial of herself and her sexuality by becoming a nun, as a sister warrior entrusted with the safety of the halo bearer, as Ava’s very first and actual close friend, as a gay mess who’s trying so hard to keep her feelings on check because her relationship to Ava involves literally the world’s salvation and she has no idea if Ava is exclusively straight/or remotely queer. I cannot even with this specific exchange pls. This pained me on a molecular level because I was transported to my crush on a girl I met at bible camp when I was a prepubescent. (Yes I was at one point and against my will, an uncool christian nerd I’m no stranger to christianity and its multicomplex traumatic interseccion with queerness). And I still to this day wonder what became of Irene my Bible camp crush
10. Ava (despite not reaching the full understanding of the situation that Bea would like her to have) is emotionally smart, so whatever it is that's bothering Bea so much, she'll offer to listen to her, and if she isn't ready to do so, she can wait; but in the meantime she'll make damn sure to let Bea know that Beatrice isn't just 'barely acceptable', nor 'simply enough'. She is seen, she is full, whole and beautiful.
I did NOT need to have Beatrice thrusted upon me, introduced only to be taken away like this. I was living just fine without this knowledge, but yet here we are

Ruben Dias x Reader - Top Spies Part 3/8
This chapter is so good, I'm really setting you up🤭🤭
Tumblr media
Ruben and Reader are super spies, who have to pretend to be a married couple on vacation as a co-signed mission. A enemies to lovers fic, very sweet and funny!
Enjoy!
You woke up to somthing heavy pressing you down against the matress. Somthing heavy and warm.
"Ruben, get off me."
So he was a heavy sleeper. Not a very good trait for a crime fighting agent.
"Ruben please, I can't feel my legs."
A low grunt was the only sign of life coming from him. Trying to stirr him awake only made it worse. Ruben's grip around your body tightened as his face snuggled into the fabric of your shirt, which by the way, was starting to rise above your hips, revealing more of you than you ever wished for Ruben to see.
Suddenly there was heavy knocking on your hotel door.
"It's the hotel manager!" The voice behind the knock said. A female voice.
"Ruben, somone is..."
You had to say no more. Ruben's grip around your was gone and so was the weight of him. The knocking doors woke him up as if he had selective hearing.
"I'm sorry to disturb you this early Mr and Mrs Moreno, but it is very important!"
"Wait here." Ruben said, faster than you to get up and out of bed. His face looked sprung woke, his hair pointing in every direction. He ran a hand through it on his way to the door. You were right behind.
"I told you to wait in bed." He frowned.
"I'm not your real wife Ruben, don't tell me what to do."
He shook his head but stretched to open the door, revealing a tall woman dressed in suit and tie.
"Good morning Mr and Mrs Moreno. I am sorry to disturb your sleep this early in the morning, but I have received some very urgent information about your stay here at Resort de la Martinez.
"What information?" Ruben said, a hand held behind his back.
Who sleeps with a gun strapped to their sweatpants, you thought. Either way, the woman did not look the slightest intimidate by Ruben's lack of hospitality, the opposite really.
"If I may introduce myself Mr and Mrs Moreno, my name is Beatrice Sanchez the manger of this resort.
"Yeah, and what do you want?" Ruben frowned.
"My boss has requested to invite you to stay at his villa as his personal guests."
Ruben looked to you and you looked to him. He turned back to the woman. "I'll have to discuss this with my wife, thanks."
The woman lunged forward, preventing Ruben from shutting the hotel door in her face. "I'm afraid there won't be much of a discussion. My boss insists that you and your wife be his guests at the villa. He is very thankful for what you did for his nephew the other night."
Again, Ruben shot you a puzzled look. The boy who's life he had saved at dinner turned out to be the nephew to one of Portugals most infamous druglords.
"Our staff will have your things escorted as soon as you're ready, the woman, Beatrice, said. She bowed her head, leaving you and Ruben with no other option.
"What do we do?" You asked Ruben as he shut the hotel door.
"Call Captain Harlow. Tell him that there's been useful developments in our mission and that we need more equipment."
"More equipment? For what?"
He smiled. "Surveillance."
********************************************
"What now?" You asked.
Within days you and Ruben were moved into a lovely Spanish Villa at a private section of the resort. You had staff catering to you at all hours of the day and a car for you to use during the reminder of your stay. Although the offered luxury was tempting, you and Ruben stuck to your mission and spent most nights in the streets bugging the entire resort with cameras, microphones and movment sensors. During the day you were pretty much free to do whatever, most suspicious activity occured during night anyway.
"Let's go to the beach." Ruben yawned, stretching his arms above his head.
"The what now?"
"The beach. People need to see us do normal stuff together, otherwise they'll suspect that somthing is off."
He had a point. You hated that he had a point.
"Fine. Just give me a minute to pack my stuff."
"No need. Just grab a towel and take your clothes off. "
"Excuse me?"
Ruben grinned. "Didn't you read the signs on our way up here?"
"What signs?"
"There's only nude beaches around this private section. No bikini's allowed."
"What? That's ridiculous. "
"Those are the rules." He shrugged.
"Ruben, I'm not going to..."
"I'm joking." He chuckled.
You sighed in relief, tossing your bikini top his way. He caught it with one hand, twisting the fabric between his fingers before handing it back to you.
You had gotten to know each other very well, during the days you spent together. Contrary to your beliefs, Ruben could crack jokes. Lame jokes. However, some of them made you chuckle.
"I am going to the beach though." Ruben said. He had been down there every day since you moved to the villa. For some reason he was convinced that Alejandro Martinez kept a submarine near the Island. The best place to look was near the ocean.
"Then I am going to enjoy my day playing golf."
"You play golf?" Ruben questioned.
You grabbed your gloves and cap from your suitcase. "I'm a former junior champion, if you must know."
Ruben said nothing, although he looked impressed.
"Have fun." You said once the two of you went your separate ways.
Ruben walked to the beach as you took the car to the resorts own private golf course.
You stepped onto the lush green grass, clubs slung over your shoulder and your sunglasses perched on your head. You hadn't played golf for years, but this vacation/mission in Madeira actually allowed you to take up the sport that you loved so much.
As you made your way around the golf course, you couldn't help but notice the admiring glances of the other golfers. You were used to this kind of attention when you were younger, but today there was one man who caught your eye in particular. He was a tall and handsome stranger with piercing brown eyes and a charming smile. As you played your respective rounds around the course the man and you kept crossing paths, and he made a point to flirt with you shamelessly, despite you fake wedding ring. He seemed to be completely unfazed by the fact that you were married. In fact, he seemed to be drawn to it, as if the forbidden fruit was all the more tempting because of it. At first you were taken aback by his forwardness. You had never been one to encourage such behavior from strangers, and you certainly didn't want to risk anything that could potentially intrud the mission that you and Ruben had. However the man kept approaching you, forcing you to tell him off.
"Is your putt shot as awful as your pick up lines?"
The man laughed with his whole face, making him even more handsome.
"Is that a challenge?" He said.
You shrugged. "It's not a challenge when I know I'm gonna win."
The man looked to his caddie, nodding his head as to say that he was impressed. "Pepe hand me my putt." He ordered.
The caddie brought him his club, exchanging it for his iron seven. You stood ready to go, with the last hole within reach. You swung the club with ease sinking the ball right away.
"Impressive. " The man applauded. "If I sink the ball first try I'm taking you to dinner."
You smirked. He was slick, too slick for his own good. Successfully sinking the ball in the whole, the man turned to you, sporting a complement smile. "I guess dinner is on me. How about the restaurant near the marina?"
"Great, my husband and I will meet you there at seven."
The man laughed but stretched out his hand to shake yours. "Pleasure playing with you...."
"Y/N." You smiled. "Y/N Moreno."
"Alejandro Martinez." He said, causing your hand to go lump in his grip.
"Y...your...him."
"The owner of this resort? Yeah that's me."
But he was so young. Younger than you thought he'd be. He looked to be around fifty years old, but very fit for his age.
"You and your husband....you're staying at the villa with my family, no?"
"Um...yes."
You had a bad feeling about this. Alejandro Martinez was never known for spending much time at his resort, but here he was, enjoying a round of golf with you.
"Than we shall all see you again tonight." He turned your hand and kissed your knuckles. Heat rose to your face as you pulled away.
You couldn't wait to report all of this back to Ruben.

Hi do you have any avatrice recommendations?
For sure! I actually made a whole doc for my friends with avatrice fic recs so anytime someone wants one feel free to message lol
I'm going to try and limit this to 10 and also list some fics I don't usually see on rec lists:
tell me please all is forgiven (touch me) by paddingtonfan69
Beatrice realizes that her touch helps Ava with her training, and, well, things escalate.
in the way everlasting by belikebumblebee
Beatrice has imagined a million variations on the same theme: Ava, alive; Ava, where Beatrice can get to her. Some seemed less than realistic, and others even more unlikely, and quite a few of them downright impossible even by the standards of their reality. Still, none of them involved having to patiently, painstakingly parse out what little Ava could tell her of the street signs she's seen and cross-reference it with landscape descriptions and the placement of old phone boxes. None of them involved the thirty minute drive taking twice as long due to road work on the way out of town.
oh, there's a river that winds on forever (i'm gonna see where it leads) by zefrumiousbandersnatch
Ava and Beatrice walk over 600 kilometers from Lisbon, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain and fall in love.
Right on Time by quietblueriver
Ava comes back. There are a lot of feelings. The OCS gets a therapist. Everybody does some healing and learns to deal.
now our hands join 'round the meaning you sought by snapfreezes
Beatrice takes the ring, twists it between her fingertips. It’s the perfect size. She just knows it.
She wonders what it would look like on Ava’s left hand.
a little piece of heaven by Smokestarrules
Through Switzerland and through the portal and through whatever comes after, Ava learns Beatrice. Learns to love her, to trust her, to live with her.
Learns from her, too.
where you die I will die (and there will I be buried) by julesby10
Love tastes like lemon drops and the iron of blood, smells like fresh laundry, soap, and the sweet undertones of argan lotion, sounds like a low, level voice and a marked British accent, love is earthy tones and navy and the texture of linen. Love, Ava discovered, feels like home.
Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.
Or what it feels to go from strangers to tentative friends, to being friends, to suddenly realizing that you can't live without this person.
i just wanna stay (in this lavender haze) by Humble_wats
Beatrice returns home after years away, and Ava is the new groundskeeper on the enormous Young estate.
come back (even as a shadow, even as a dream) by karatam
Three months after Ava disappears into the portal, Beatrice still can’t let her go. She’ll do anything to bring Ava back. But when she manages to succeed, the question is what else has Ava brought back with her?
or
Ava comes back wrong.
Where Water Comes Together by riderwrites
Ava forges a connection to bodies of water: oceans, rivers, and rain.
Ava finds a family she never thought she'd have: mother, sisters, and soulmate.
or Ava bonds with the ocs while near water in some form or fashion, found family kind of vibes.

Love this discussion about the half in / half out setup. My two cents: most of the Hi/Ho have either
- a legit profession (Zara, Mike, Snowdon, Annabel) where the royal connection just adds value and prestige and interest. This setup is solid and can continue indefinitely
- a thinly disguised networking outfit (Peter, Prince Michael, Andrew, Beatrice) where the royal connection is the core business but discretion is paramount. This setup is fragile and must be either abandoned when the Crown gives the "cut it" sign (Andrew, Prince Michael) or shored up with more legitimacy (Peter and Beatrice look like legit nepotism hires/entrepreneurs these days)
Even the married-ins follow this template: Edo, solid business with royal polish; Jack, went too far in selling royal tequila and had to pull back after a brief exile in Portugal. Sophie tried the "networking" route, was exposed in a tabloid sting, and had to give it up. Tim has a distinguished naval career, and he's occasionally photographed looking good in coats. Fergie tried the "networking" route a million times, unsuccessfully, and has finally settled on a fairly well received role as a writer. Pippa and James tried the "networking" in the 20s and were bashed for it. Carole kept her business going with added Royal polish for as long as she could, before the inescapable market pressure crushed it.
The Duchy Originals is a bit different, because part of the Duchy profits are fed back into the public coffers, and Charles/William are not out there promoting their own biscuits. (also my mum loves said biscuits, so...)
Meghan wanted to be a "Royal influencer", which is neither a solid profession nor discreet behind the scenes networking, so there was no template for her. "Prestige Actress" with no titles but a ton of Royal polish could have worked (she has no talent but the press would have praised even her breath-y take on Ibsen, back then), "HRH Duchess Influencer" with #ad posts was a bridge too far.
...sorry, I've written an essay. But it's an interesting topic, so out in the open now!
I agree with most of this and I get what you're saying, but I can't get past lumping Annabel in with Zara, Mike, and David. Same with including Pippa and James.
Everyone else is either royal by birth or royal by marriage. Annabel, Pippa, and James don't fit into either one of those categories since it's their sibling that is royal by marriage. IMO, they are irrelevant when it comes to discussing half in/half out.
I don't like Annabel. I'm sure she's a nice lady and I know she's just supporting her sister and brother-in-law, but dear God. The lady needs to read the room and stop talking.

A community farm has said demand for its Women's Shed group has exploded.
The team in Swansea offers a weekly club for all ages to come together for outdoor activities.
It is similar to the Men's Shed movement, which boomed in popularity a few years ago, and focuses on mental wellbeing with hopes of expansion across the UK.
One participant said the group gave her "something to go on for" after her husband died.
The Summit Good farm, just three acres in size, is home to multiple small businesses and two community-supported agriculture schemes, as well as the Women's Shed project.
The idea was that of Elizabeth Walshaw, founder of Petallica, an organic flower grower at the site.
In her 20s, she found making friends difficult and thought others may be facing the same struggle so she wanted to create "a space where older and younger people can come together".
"When you're struggling with something and you speak to one of the older ladies, it's just having that different perspective on life," she said.
Those going range from people in their 20s to women in their 60s.
Mary Williams, 66, said that when her husband of nearly 40 years died, she "didn't want to get up in the mornings".
"It took me aback. I thought I was this strong person who could do anything," she said.
"To develop yourself and realise that there are things you can go on for and do and enjoy, and there are new things to find out about as well, for me it was a turning point coming here."
Bethan Woodward, 31, was also on the lookout for new friends after moving to Wales from Portugal during the pandemic.
"I thought I'd come along to meet some cool women and spend some time outside as well," she said.
"I think when you work on a computer all day it's really nice to have a bit of time in the garden."
Now, the team is trying support other groups wanting to start their own version and hope to create a blueprint for further new groups around the UK.
Beatrice Arscott, who started by coming to the Women's Shed and is now a director, added: "It's just amazing to see the impact on people's wellbeing.
"All the flowers that we grow and then sell to florists or events, weddings whatever it might be, the women at the Women's Shed have been part of that whole process.
"So it can be such a rewarding thing to be literally planting the seeds to then seeing it in a bride's bouquet somewhere."

Reminder #6176872: Eugenie is Trash by u/Common_Echo6265
Reminder #6176872: Eugenie is Trash As part of promotion for her podcast, Eugenie's team briefed the Independent. It's a doozy, but confirms what we've known all along - Eug is trash. The article goes on & on (literally multiple nauseating paragraphs) about her closeness w/H&M and how M, in particular, inspires her. Hate to break it to you Eug, but even Independent readers who might like H&M won't look past your father and give your podcast (which ironically is about sex trafficking) a listen. The article also confirms that H&M did meet up w/Eug in Portugal. It goes on to ludicrously claim that she may be the one to bring H&M back in the fold. Charles & William DGAF what Eug thinks about anything, let alone H&M. The article concludes w/Eug indulging in H&M's favorite pastime of manifesting, suggesting that she's going to be promoted to working royal. Charles & William have briefed multiple broadsheets since the Queen's passing that there won't be any additional working royals. Even if that changes, Eug - or frankly Bea - still won't be. I know folks here like Bea, but Bea's unpopular in the UK w/ratings lower than Camilla's and even Eug's (likely due to her instrumental role in Andy's trainwreck interview). She also partakes in sketchy shit. For example, the Times published an expose after their weddings showing how both she & Eug accepted "donations" from suspect folks. There wasn't much fuss since they're non-working royals, but that'd change the moment they became working royals. Charles has never wanted either of them to be working royals, so I highly doubt he'll change his mind w/all these red flags. Most infuriating/laughable bits (from https://ift.tt/mBIwz3o remains extremely close to the couple [H&M], despite their very public rift with the rest of the royals; the two families spent time together in Portugal following the Invictus Games in September. She has remained steadfast in her support of the pair since they quit royal life and moved to California, visiting them there several times and even appearing in the background of their Netflix documentary. It’s often speculated that if anyone can bring them back into the fold, it’s her.Eugenie is known to admire the humanitarian work Meghan and Harry have continued despite no longer being working royals. Their riposte of “Service is universal” when they were stripped of their titles may have been viewed by many as disrespectful, but for Eugenie, it appears to resonate.Ironically, Eugenie’s hard work to carve her own niche may be paying off in a way she didn’t expect: speculation is mounting that, with the number of working royals dwindling and plenty of engagements still to be done, she and Beatrice may be now be called upon to step up. How she will navigate the next chapter – combining being a “spare” and getting on with her own life and passion projects, with a more official royal role – will be interesting to watch. It is a fine balance neither Harry nor Meghan managed to achieve, but Eugenie could yet emerge as a significant power princess for the House of Windsor. post link: https://ift.tt/SlLFfzg author: Common_Echo6265 submitted: October 21, 2023 at 08:51PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

I actually listened to the Eugenie podcast this morning whilst walking the dog - overall a bit boring - but the Table A manners was just Andrew and Fergie’s way of saying “behave yourself please.”
She also said that when they would have tea as a whole big family that there would be kids tea and adults tea:
- always served at 5pm.
- kids tea was actually their dinner/evening meal, she says they’d have spaghetti bolognese for example…
- adults tea was at the same time, the other end of the table, and was more of what we know as a traditional afternoon tea of sandwiches and sweet treatss etc and then after the kids had gone to bed was when the adults would eat their dinners.
- the only “strict” rules QE2 applied was that didn’t matter if you were kids or adults, you had to eat something savoury before you had something sweet and that you couldn’t leave the table before everyone had finished eating.
She also said:
Andrew and Fergie are terrible cooks and when she and/or Beatrice visit home it tends to be easy meals liked baked potatoes or salads. They didn’t enjoy home cooked meals as kids because they were such terrible cooks - she says they didn’t have a chef at royal lodge.
She took a culinary school cooking class but still isn’t very good - she prefers easy, one pot/pan recipes over fancy dishes.
She splits her year between Portugal and the cottage at KP. Portugal gives the family space to be a family and for her not to be Princess Eugenie - which is where I rolled my eyes cos, I’m a 30 year old Brit and she’s pretty much irrelevant here…no one’s chasing her down the street but sure…whatever I guess!
She had a few issues around food as a teen with the body commentary coming at her, from teenagers at school and then also from the press and she feels the pressure to loose baby weight etc because of what people say about her body.
^ that last bit was really the only bit I felt for her and even that was split into throw away comments across an hour long podcast.
Ahhh, thanks for the summary, anon!

#JON SNOW FORTNIGHT EVENT 2023
@asoiafcanonjonsnow
DAY 10: ECHOES OF THE PAST 🗝️📜(2/2) ->
Historical parallels with Medieval bastard Kings.
John I of Portugal
To complete the the previous post of this meta, we're going to dive in the parallels and simmilarities between Jon Snow and John I of Portugal through the following points:
BASTARDY
John I of Portugal also known as John of Avis, was the bastard son of King Peter I of Portugal and Teresa Guille Lourenço, a Galician noblewoman, lady in waiting of Inês de Castro, or according to other sources, the daughter of some Lisbon merchants.
Jon Snow is officially known to be Ned Stark's bastard son, and if we consider R+L=J, he's Prince Rhaegar and Lyanna's son, and as far as we know Jon is still a bastard.
PARENT'S TRAGIC LOVE STORY
John I's father, Peter I of Portugal fell in love with Inês, a lady in waiting and cousin of Constanza Manuel de Villena (Peter's wife).
After Constanza died, they became lovers and they had four children and they wed in secret, but some Portuguese nobles and Peter's father, Afonso IV of Portugal, disliked their relationship because the possible influences of Inês' family. They plotted to kill her, Inés was killed by three of those men and it's said that when Peter became king, he put Inês' corpse in a throne next to him so that the people would swear allegiance to her as queen of Portugal and looked for revenge chasing the ones who killed Inês. John I was born a few years after Inês died when Peter I had an affair with Teresa Lourenço.
Jon's parents, Rhaegar and Lyanna met at the Harrenhal Tourney, in which both participated, Lyanna as the Knight of the Laughing Tree, Aerys sent Rhaegar some men to learn the identity of the mystery knight, so it's likely that Rhaegar figure it out and then crowned her as Queen of Love and Beauty when he won the tourney. They fell in love and run away together, Rhaegar died at the Battle of the Trident during Robert's rebellion and Lyanna died after giving birth to Jon at the Tower of Joy.
BROTHER IS THE KING
After Peter I of Portugal died, he was succeeded by his son with Constanza Manuel de Villena, Ferdinand I, and John held a prominent position during the reign of his brother.
Jon is a brother of the Night's Watch when Robb is proclaimed as King in the North and during his brief reign.
Apart from that it would be argued that Aegon VI fits here too because he's Jon's brother, but Young Griff's identity as Aegon VI is doubtful and he hasn't taken control of Westeros yet.
MILITAR EDUCATION AND CAREER
John was educated by Nuno Freire de Andrade, Master of the Order of Christ, and John became Master of the Order of Avís, one of the most important Orders in Portugal during the Middle Ages, from which he will take his last name.
Jon joined the Night's Watch, which can also be considered a militar order in which chastity is also imposed on its members just like the Order of Avis. Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch has been one of Jon's mentors, so just like John, Jon had the leader of a militar order as a mentor, and then became the head of a militar order.
RELATIONSHIPS/LOVE INTERESTS
While John formed part of the Order of Avis, despite vows of chastity, John had two bastard children with Inês Pires when he was a teenager, Beatrice and Afonso, 1st Duke of Braganza.
Jon broke his vows by falling in love and being with Ygritte, even though Jon didn't had children with Ygritte, and Jon has also expressed that he didn't want to have them because of the stigma of being a bastard and the classist Westerosi society.
POLITICAL MATCH MAKER
John was one of the negotiators of the successive marriage projects of his niece and the heiress Beatrice of Portugal, who would end up marrying John I of Castile (Henry II of Castile's son), as a way to seal peace after the Fernandine Wars, in which Ferdinand I tried to overthrow Henry II from the Castilian throne, who became king after killing his legitimate brother Peter I of Castile (who was Ferdinand I's cousin), and was supported by one of Peter I's legitimised bastard children, Constance of Castile.
In the agreements established that each one would independently reign their kingdoms and the offspring of both would inherit Portugal, although if Beatrice died without children, the heirs of her husband would inherit Portugal, and John I of Castile has children from a previous marriage to Eleanor of Aragon (this is important detail for later).
Jon has also arranged a wedding of a familiar during his time as head of the militar institucional, as the Karstarks originated as a cadet branch of the Starks, and there have been intermarriages between the two houses, so we could assume Alys and Jon are distant cousins, such as Alys and Sigorn's wedding.
PROBLEMS OF SUCESSION AND INDEPENDENCE OF THEIR KINGDOMS & THEIR RISE TO KINGSHIP
After the death of Ferdinand I, a succession crisis took place in Portugal between Beatrice, who had no offspring, and the children of Peter I of Portugal with Inés de Castro (who were considered bastards by the Portuguese nobility), and also John revolted at end of 1384 with the support of the commonfolk and the bourgeoisie, and promoted a war to maintain the independence of Portugal, adopting the title of defender of the kingdom, which he achieved by defeating Beatrice and John I of Castile, for which he was crowned king of Portugal, being the first king and founder of the House of Avis.
Due to what happened to John with the fight for the independence of Portugal against another family member, it is most likely that in TWOW when Jon arrives in Winterfell the inheritance problem between the Starklings will have to be solved, and with Robb's will and his position as the older brother and being the one with political experience, supported by the Free Folk, the Mountain Clans and some Northern Noble Houses like the recently created House of Thenn, formed by Alys and Sigorn, Jon will be named king in the North breaking relations with the Iron Throne that is under the control of the Lannisters and the North will be (for the moment) independent again. In addition, the matter of Beatrice and her husband John I of Castile reminds me a bit of the marriage of Sansa and Tyrion, being Tywin's initial plan to get the North under the rule of the Lannisters, although that did not work and the best method was having the Boltons at Winterfell. Plus both Tyrion and John I of Castile have lions in their sigils, although the Castilian lion is purple (or in some media, red) and the Lannister one is golden.
ALLIANCES, MARRIAGE & OFFSPRING/POSSIBLE MARRIAGE (SPECULATIONS)
Like his brother Ferdinand I, John supported Constance's cause, allying with her against John I of Castile, but they were defeated and Constance did not get the Castilian throne, her daughter Catherine of Lancaster married John I of Castile's son, Henry III, and their son was  John II of Castile, thus uniting the two lines of succession of Alfonso XI of Castile.
As well as Peter I of Castile's two eldest surviving daughters married two of Edward III of England's sons (Constance married John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and Isabella married Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York), John I of Portugal married Philippa of Lancaster, John of Gaunt's eldest daughter with Blanche of Lancaster, and they had a loving marriage and eight children: Blanche, Afonso, Edward I of Portugal, Peter, Henry, Isabella, John and Ferdinand.
Edward was a poet and writer, his more important books were, on good governance,'The Loyal Counselor', 'Book of Councils', 'Response, being princes, to the infant D. Ferdinand about some complaints he had of his father'; on sports and horsemanship, with educational connotations, 'Teaching book about riding well in any saddle' and "Regiment to learn to play weapons'.
It's very likely that Jon will need to make more alliances to stablish his position as King in The North and preparing for the War for the Dawn and fight against the Others, and one way to do it it would be marrying someone with a prominent influence and a big army.
And although Dany hasn't landed on Westeros yet, due to her army and her influence as queen claimant to the Iron Throne, could be a good ally, and Dany would like to help due to her care for people who are needed, so probably Jon and Dany would join forces and eventually they could fall in love, marry and rule Westeros together.
Plus, if Jon ans Dany have children, one of them could be a poet like Edward I or a music composer and a bookworm like Rhaegar.
CUNNING/KNOWLEDGE
Contemporary writers state John that his position as a master of a religious military order made him an exceptionally learned king for the Middle Ages. His love for knowledge and culture was passed down to his children, who are collectively referred to by Portuguese historians as the illustrious generation, for example, Edward I the Eloquent and Peter were considered as two of the most learned princes of their time, and Henry the Sailor invested heavily in science and in the development of nautical activities.
Although Jon is often seen as a warrior, he has shown interest on knowledge and books too and he has been showing competences and skills for being a good leader and he's cunning good at politics and a good administrator, as he has been proving during his time as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.
DRAGON IMAGERY
John I of Portugal's sigil has some elements that make me link him with Jon, his emblem has a crest with a dragon, which was usually used in the heraldry of the Portuguese Royal family, in which a dragon appears in the Royal crest or two green dragons as the supports of coat of arms, which makes me think of Rhaegal, a green dragon, who was named after Rhaegar and most likely Jon is its dragonrider.

I'll forever stand by this:
Separating Beatrice and Lilith after the Vatican attack was one of the worst decisions they* could've made, and at the same time feels so natural with their roles on the OCS.
Those girls had just lost two of the most important people in their lives, one dead, the other vanished. They were their only mutual support, and one of them has just come back from literal hell, yet they were expected to just carry on and continue being of service to the OCS (as proper Sister Warriors do). They were not given time to mourn their loses, to reconnect, to just cry; instead, they were given missions: look after Mary, take care of Ava. Move, move, move.
And they did, because that's how they are, how they were shaped to be; they only see themselves as worthy when they are useful. They push themselves to fulfill missions they are undoubtedly committed to (there's no question on whether Lilith wants to know what happened to Mary, nor on Beatrice wanting to protect Ava), because if they don't, who would do it? They are the older sisters now, the ones responsables of keeping things moving. They step into their roles without doubt, but also without guidance, no more guidance than the memories of the sisters they just buried.
I keep thinking about Beatrice, in The Alps, scared upon the possibility of Ava getting hurt because she isn't training her well enough, unable to ask anyone for advice because all of her older sisters are gone.
I am thinking about Lilith browsing Portugal's streets, looking for Vincent, lost both physically and emotionally, reaching the end of the day with no one else but herself and missing the silent presence of her sister, who always knew how to keep her company.
I am thinking about a pair of sisters who were separated when they needed each other the most, before losing themselves completely.

Honestly, if Charles is so bent out of shape about having to pay for his freeloading relatives via Duchy of Lancaster funds, here’s a thought. Swing the hammer and cut them all loose!
Most of them can support themselves! Charge them an appropriate rent to live in royal properties but cut off the gravy train of allowances and stipends. It’ll free up a few hundred thousand pounds that Charles can spend on Camilla’s vacations.
And frankly, the only ones who’d be affected are the Kents, Gloucesters, and Yorks. Kents and Gloucesters will resolve soon enough with natural attrition. So it’s just Andrew and maybe Eugenie who’s the problem.
(Sussexes are irrelevant because they’re not working royals and don’t have royal lodging. Beatrice and Edo have an apartment in St. James’s Palace and I assume they’re paying rent of some kind. Eugenie might still have Ivy Cottage, but she really shouldn’t if the Brooksbankses are living in Portugal part-time as has been announced…and if they’re not living in Portugal anymore, that needs to be announced too and she can go sponge off Andrew in his giant lodge.)
The best part is that Charles knew how this all works, and has for decades. He knows better than anyone else how the Duchy of Lancaster works and who he'd be responsible for when the time came. No wonder he spent years talking about a slimmed down monarchy. The man is a cheap skate just like his second born son.
