Sorry if this is inappropriate, but I was kinda wondering what caused your house fire? What to avoid doing the future if it was preventative ya know
My housemate's e-bike battery was charging in their room, and combusted. I was at work; thankfully everyone else got out safely. But we all lost our apartment and most of our personal possessions. The bike's owner lost literally everything- they were in the shower and escaped wearing only a towel. Their room looked like a crater; that's not an exaggeration.
I support electric vehicles as part of the fight against climate change, but I REALLY need people to be aware of the risks. The lithium ion batteries they use are not like the one in your phone or your computer, or even in an electric car. While any of the above can catch fire, it seems like the ones in e-bikes and e-scooters are more likely to at the moment. And the fire burns hot and fast- I've heard conventional extinguishers can't even put it out, though I don't know much about that. This wasn't an off-brand bike or battery, either. It was by Rad Power, a well-known and popular company.
Follow all the recommendations for charging the batteries: on a flat surface, attended, and DO NOT leave them plugged in past full charge. That can help, but since this battery was not fully charged when it exploded, I strongly recommend charging them outside if at all possible. I believe some people do it inside an enclosed charcoal grill, the round sort with a cover? The cord would have to stick out but it's still SOME sort of protection in case of fire.
Personally, I will never live in a house with one again, but I have Trauma Reasons and some people need them for cheap reliable transportation. I get that. They're here to stay. We just have to protect ourselves until the technology gets past its teething troubles.
Close your bedroom door when sleeping and when you leave the house. I lost a lot, but my room was the least damaged because my door was closed- the fire literally skipped over my room and up through the ceiling crawl-space.
Beyond that- basic fire safety, I guess. Don't leave candles unattended, etc.
Take care of yourselves, people. Trust me, you don't want to go through even a nonlethal house fire- and this was the best-case scenario.

How do i find the motivation to practice art? I have so many shitposts that’ll never come to fruition because my skills plateaued ):
No one else is going to draw my ideas and I'm too broke to pay someone else to do it for me. For better or worse, I seem to approach a lot of things from a "gotta do everything myself around here" angle haha
Honestly—and I won't lie to you—doing art studies is a real pain in the ass, I hate doing them. I never do them unless I've got major art block, and even then I still hate doing them, but it's like taking medicine and I know doing them will make me better. Every art teacher I've ever had's grilled me about this, "solradguy, you need to do 15 studies before the end of the week to get a full grade this quarter." Blah blah blah.
I guess for some people doing studies could be fun, not having to think about pose or composition, whatever, just putting lines down on paper and focus on your reference. One time, when I was still in college, I had to do a certain amount of studies in charcoal so I booted up Red Dead Redemption and drew landscapes or objects from it that I kinda liked. It was enough. I told my professor it was from my grandma's farm hehe
Art memes can be a good way to practice too, especially those ones about drawing in different styles or drawing a character in different outfits. They combine fun with tricking you into drawing things you might not normally draw. Emulating different art styles is the only art study method that doesn't make me want to fall asleep. Don't forget they're just art games though, and especially don't forget:
👉If You Already Feel Burnt Out Don't Feel Compelled To Complete Every Art Meme You Start👈
As you get better at art, you start noticing improvements less and less because they become more subtle. When you're really new to art, figuring out stuff like basic anatomy or shading is REALLY obvious because they're foundational parts of art. Hang on to your really old stuff and look at it every now and then and I guarantee you'll have improved way more than you thought you had.
I get the impression you've probably been at art for a while now, and I don't want to come across as patronizing, but sometimes refreshing the basics can help overcome a plateau too. Drawabox is usually what I recommend to people just getting into art, I really like their approach. Here's a link to their introduction lesson: drawabox.com/lesson/0 And here's one that skips to the actual art stuff: drawabox.com/lesson/1
While it's probably beneficial to actually do the exercises in the lessons, just skimming through reading them can be good too.
Something I've noticed a lot of my artists friends (and artists online) do is try to make every single drawing a finished piece, and I'm like "damn, no wonder art feels like such a chore." My sketchbook is 99% scribbles done in pen:
Tumblr media
I use Pentel RSVP fine point ballpoint pens so if I make a mistake I'm forced to deal with it. Doing these rough sketches before starting a bigger piece is something I recommend with my entire heart. Just get a pack of shitty $0.99 pens and doodle like it's high school math class. I like the cheap pens because you can get faint lines drawing lightly and can coax them into darker lines with a bit more pressure (and if you lose/break one it's no big deal).
The best way to get better at art is to keep putting lines on paper. Even if it's just silly pen doodles, you're still improving coordination/pen control, improving construction of basic shapes, exploring concepts, and thinking about art, which will lead to more new ideas and further inspiration.
Sorry this is long and meandering haha Hopefully something here helps at least a tiny bit.

Twisted Wonderland server JPN event "Tamansha Muina in Sunset Meadow" Story 02(1/?)
•Everyone enjoying the culinary food in Sunset Savanna's market. First they try is a charcoal- grilled dish of chunks of mutton placed on a metal plate. Similar with a spice grilled meat. This is Leona's favorite dish.
•Kifaji told them to try mangoes juice, unfortunately the fruit is sold out. But they fruit seller tell them to try passion fruit when Lilia ask for recommendations.
•Grim surprise see a fruit is size as Grim, Jackfruit. Leona says it's the biggest fruit among other fruits in around the world. Since Grim wanted to try it, Leona bought for him. Everyone shocks Grim eat a whole the jackfruit by himself.
•Next up, they try eat Steam Banana. Same like we cook steam potatoes. Mixed with wheat and rice for flavor. Last, the dishes of crepe made of rice along sauce like curry, Chili, veggies, and meat as for add topping. Same like we eat "Channa" and "Injera".
•Kifaji escort them to souvenir place, there's a lot accessories with gemstones, from cheap to high price. As for Leona, he still thinks all gems in here are normal like regular gems. Suddenly he and Kifaji little argue on discussion mine's stones. But for Vil and Lilia is kinda rare to see them like that. But Kalim suddenly want to buy those souvenir to whole dorm of Scarabia students.
•Lilia still find a perfect souvenir for Malleus, Sebek, and Silver. Lilia worried if he pick a souvenir that same like last year, he did try his best to pick a perfect gift for those three.
•MC and Grim also looking for souvenir, Kiraji recommended them a hanging fabric textile art, art of symbol Simba when Simba as cub lion. "By valuing nature very much and avoiding the mining of underground resources and large- scale farming and industrialization,Handmade textiles have developed into an important industry." say Leona.
•Kifaji did help MC and Grim recommended to buy souvenir, a traditional rug. But it's really expensive. Can't help it, Leona told MC and Grim to buy a hammock bed for Grim. As for MC, Leona recommended for MC a tapestry, Leona knows a fit for MC is something decoration for room's wall. Also knows MC is interested the statue fountain of baby Simba too.
•Leona did tell MC about The story of Simba when he bought tapestry and hammock bed for both of them. MC thank to Leona, causing Leona chuckles. He didn't mind if MC ask for recommendations from him although he's too pride when MC praise him.

I'm not looking to buy a home right now, but I was recently looking on Zillow just for fun and these are the top most depressing selling points I've seen for condos and townhomes roughly within my price range and area:
1. "This is a true "fixer upper".... Due to the condition of the property and the mold, this house is a cash or hard money purchase, it will not qualify for a Conventional, VA or FHA Loan. Agents bring your highest and best offer."
2. "Location is next to the Inova Fairfax Hospital  with easy access from the condo community....This one has it ALL!"
3.  (List of nearby amenities includes dog park) "Building has a strict no pets policy"
4. "Walk to Fresh Fields!" (Whole Foods hasn't been called Fresh Fields since the 1990's. I looked it up on Google Maps. They were, in fact, referring to a Whole Foods location. Hopefully this place hasn't been vacant since the 90's!)
5. "A rare find! 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom single-level condo inside the Beltway for under $300,000! Well-maintained by one owner for the last 36 years." (This one isn't depressing itself, it's just depressing that it's rare.)
6. "Wonderful opportunity to live the Luxury High-Rise Lifestyle." [one paragraph later] "Stunning fifth floor views." (I'm reminded by the song from Oklahoma in which a provincial yokel sings, "They went and built a skyscraper seven stories high!")
7. "Hard to find  such deals any more in this county.... Why rent ? rent is not cheap anymore !!!!"
8. "Community amenities Library, Convenience Store, Beauty Salon, Doctor's Office, Attorney’s Office, Outdoor Swimming Pool, Picnic Area Deck with Charcoal Grills, Tot Lot/Playground, Fitness Centers, Sauna, Steam Room, Billiard Room & Ping Pong Table, Media Room, Party room, Card room." ("Wow, that sounds pretty great... WAIT... ATTORNEY'S OFFICE?” Dare I ask if anything about the nature of the building makes that amenity more than commonly useful?)
 9.  "There is NO washer in unit as seen in pictures apparently this is allowed by condo association now there is a wine cooler." (I'm not entirely sure what's going on here but I'm guessing the person who wrote the description was dipping into the wine cooler.)
10. "This home is being offered strictly AS-IS and at a price to reflect it simply because the owner ran out of time and energy to complete the updates that were started." (I admire the honesty.)
Honorable mention: Not actually depressing text in the description, but there's photos of random junk, packaging, and clothing strewn all over the entire home.... and also it's outside my price range.

Ch. 5 -Every Last Bite
Makima neatly folded her coat over her chair as she sat down. She'd ran into Kobeni and her partner wrapping up their morning patrol and getting ready for lunch, sending Hirokazu away on an errand and inviting Kobeni to dine out with her. She'd wanted to see Makima again though to say she'd been caught off guard would be an understatement. She was naturally apprehensive, yet totally unable to refuse someone, especially someone who held seniority over her, and before the battle of her anxieties could conclude Makima was already escorting her into the restaurant, a local hidden gem she'd heard about from an oft drunk coworker who frequented the place.
The server brought over their food, miso soup, karaage, yakitori grilled over charcoal, and a side of cucumber salad. Kobeni's meager breakfast had left her ill-equipped for such temptations. Her usual go-to's for lunch were always something cheap and convenient, instant noodles or maybe street food if she felt like splurging. She loved good food but seldom had the opportunity to treat herself, and the thought of being treated by someone wasn't one that often crossed her mind. The noise of clattering pans in the kitchen snapped her back to reality as she swiveled her head up to lock eyes with the red headed woman sitting across from her who gave her a warm smile.
"Shall we dig in?"
"A-Ah, y-yes, thanks for the food!"
Kobeni reached for the soup first, it's deep savory flavor washed over her tongue and bathed her taste buds in it's salty-sweet richness. As she savored the sensation she locked eyes with Makima who's hand was wrapped around a yakitori. She slowly lifted the sauce dipped chicken to her mouth and bit into it, prying the tender meat free of the skewer and looking to relish in the flavor.
"The food here really is delicious, do you come here often?"
Kobeni panicked and quickly swallowed the half chewed bite of tofu in her mouth.
"O-oh um... n-not really, it's a bit out of m-my usual price range..."
"Ah, well in that case don't worry about it, I'll pick up the bill this time"
"N... No! That's alright, I w-wouldn't want to impose on you like that"
"I insist, next time you can treat me somewhere"
Makima grinned at Kobeni, prodding her to take the initiative. Kobeni pursed her lips and balled her hands into fists at her sides, sheepishly looking down at her half finished bowl of miso.
"I doubt I could treat you anywhere as nice as this..."
Makima pressed a finger to her chin and pondered, studying Kobeni's form. She wanted to know her prospective partner intimately, to understand her every movement until she could read her thoughts just by gazing into her deep brown eyes. The thought of spending every waking moment with Kobeni made her heart race.
"Well, then we'll just have to go more than once"
Kobeni's shame twisted back into anxiety as she considered how this might all be a roundabout way of entrapping her in some inescapable cycle of debt. Had she truly ruined her life for half a bowl of soup? Noticing the change in her expression, Makima interjected.
"Don't fret too much, I'm not as high-maintenance as you might think"
Makima flagged down the server for drinks and slid a beer over to Kobeni who bashfully nibbled on her fried chicken.
"I want you to enjoy a nice meal with me, then simply do your best to take me somewhere where I'll get to enjoy myself with you"
Kobeni blushed, her face caught between emotions, flowing from anxiety to curiosity with a tinge of relief. She wasn't entirely sure how to feel about things but she had just been told to enjoy herself, in what felt vaguely like an order from her superior. At the very least she could use it as an excuse to help herself calm down as she reached for a skewer. The food really was excellent after all, and Makima was paying, it would be rude to refuse her after all.
Over the next hour the pair filled the air with idle chatter. It took time for Kobeni to fully register just how much more calm she felt, more than before but also in general, she wasn't use to feeling relaxed around other people, and by all rights she should be far from serenity around Makima. It was as if a reassuring aura washed over her, stroking her hair and letting her know all would be well. She thought to reach out and express her gratitude somehow, and as the emotions painted her face unknowingly, Makima's lips gently curled into a smile as if to signal back, message received. Kobeni shifted her gaze to the side and blushed, did she know?
"I think I'm full but it seems wasteful not to finish every last bite, do you want my last karaage?"
"Oh, s-sure!"
Before she could move her hand over, Makima had already picked up the food with her chopsticks and moved it in Kobeni's direction. Her face leaned on one hand she extended the chicken over expectantly. Kobeni's face turned red in an instant but her mind was in gridlock, completely unsure of how to proceed. Everything about this interaction felt inappropriate, they were coworkers, or maybe friends? But this was something l-lovers did... No, she'd blank out that thought or they'd be there all day. But she couldn't refuse, Makima's hand was edging closer, and she'd already agreed... sort of. She settled on the compromise of closing her eyes and opening her mouth. As Makima placed the food onto her tongue, the flavors danced around in her mouth. It tasted different somehow, a hint of something new that gave the dish a loving taste of home cooking. Catching herself just before she'd nearly let out a moan of pleasure, Kobeni dutifully chewed her food and swallowed, Makima's eyes not for a moment straying from her.
"I'll get the check, I have a few errands to run after this before I head back to the office, we can walk together for a bit if you'd like"
"I'd l-like that I think..."

National Brisket Day
Take the plunge and try your hand at making one of the more complicated but also most delicious cuts of beef, the ever-popular brisket.
The word primal has many meanings, but all of them come back to one meaning “first.” The word speaks of the beginnings of things, from our ancient lineage as human beings, to the animalistic force that lives within each of us. Appropriate to our thinking, then is the meaning of primal when applied to cuts of meat.
The primal cuts are those that are severed from the carcass first before the smaller and less important cuts are removed. The brisket is among these cuts, and while it requires a little know-how to make it properly, when properly made it is nothing less than the choicest of the primal cuts. National Brisket Day encourages you to explore this cut and everything it has to offer.
History of National Brisket Day
Some things take time, and a good brisket is one of these. Brisket is a popular cut of meat to serve as part of any family affair, and it’s long cooking time ensures that it is a big hit when those who know how to prepare it. Brisket is a tricky meat in that it comes from the animal tough, but if you find a particularly well-marbled piece and cook it correctly, it will become fork soft and simply peel apart, making it the tenderest of tender meats. Of course, there are hundreds of variations on how to prepare brisket, including the use of various hardwoods in the grilling process to ensure a nice smoky flavor. Some people marinate them, some don’t, and many like to serve it with a sauce.
The history of brisket dates back to ancient history – practically ever since humans reared cattle. People would sacrifice their animals on special occasions and eat every part of the animal, including the brisket cut.
Texas BBQ brisket is one of the most popular ways to prepare it. Here, chefs marinate the meat for between 24 and 48 and cook it in a unique wood or charcoal-fired BBQ oven. Careless cooking often resulted in tough meat, so people developed techniques to get the most out of the cut. After all, if you could make brisket taste good, it was a great way to get delicious and cheap meat.
In the old days, you couldn’t store meat in a refrigerator. The technology simply didn’t exist. After 48 hours following the death of the animal, the carcass would begin to turn, meaning that the butcher had to cook and eat it fast.
Friday evenings, therefore, became the traditional day on which people would cook up the remaining cuts of meat uneaten and unsold throughout the week. People found that barbecuing meat and adding marinades and sauces provided the best flavor. And so the rationale for holding National Brisket Day celebrations was born.
National Brisket Day is also heavily associated with smoked meats – not just brisket. Again, butchers had to use smoking to preserve meat so that it wouldn’t go off. For that reason, they took cuts of meat, such as rib-eye or tenderloin, and put them in smoke sheds. This process killed off all the bacteria and created compounds that would inhibit the growth of harmful bugs in the future.
How to celebrate National Brisket Day
Well, it’s pretty much inarguable that the best way to celebrate National Brisket Day is to have yourself a deliciously prepared brisket.
So besides cooking a hearty brisket meal, what else can you do to celebrate brisket day?
Well, one idea is to go for a meal out at a local restaurant that still serves beef brisket in the traditional style. Ideally, you’re looking for an establishment that takes the cheaper cuts of meat and then prepares them in such a way that makes them taste far more expensive than they actually are. By going to a local restaurant along with your friends and family, you’re showing your support for everyone involved in the supply chain, from the restaurant owner to the cattle rancher.
Many restaurants make a point of serving brisket. They want to prove that it is possible to make even the cheapest cuts of beef taste amazing. They see it as a challenge. Some, for instance, use special tenderizing techniques and serve it rare. Others rely on slow cooking methods. The great thing National Brisket Day is that there are so many recipe options. Barbecued brisket is a classic, but today’s chefs are so inventive, you’re now spoiled for choice for how they prepare your meat.
National Brisket Day is also an opportunity to highlight the environmental costs of food waste. As people, we often throw away a substantial proportion of the food that we buy. The tradition of eating brisket, however, reminds us of the fact that food was a scarce commodity in the past, and that it is important to make use of every part of the animal. Throwing away food is both costly and damaging to the natural world.
So there you have it: some simple ways to celebrate National Brisket Day. What will you do?

Girls meet meat! à la carte Part 3
Previously: Part 2
Tumblr media
Maika: Alrighty! Let’s start heading to the barbecue site!
Haruna: Is it near here?
Maika: It’s a few minutes’ walk, I’d say. There’s a supermarket on the way that I want to stop by, though.
Maika: We’ll stock up on barbecue ingredients there.
Honoka: When I looked up the barbecuing place before, I saw that we could get ingredients there. We can get charcoal too, and rent equipment.
Haruna: Right! I saw they have premade sets of meat and veggies.
Maika: We’ll get the charcoal and rent equipment there, but let’s buy the ingredients ourselves.
Maika: That’s part of the fun of a barbecue!
Shiho: I can concur with this.
Maika: But no getting carried away, okay? We’re on a budget here!
---
Tumblr media
Maika: Alright then, let’s start with the vegetables.
Shiho: I don’t see the need. Why eat vegetables when you could use that room for more meat instead?
Honoka: No no no, that won’t do! We gotta eat a good balance of meat and veggies.
Haruna: How about we start with onions?
Tumblr media
Honoka: Onions are good! They help keep your blood pressure low.
Shiho: I suppose I wouldn’t mind tomatoes.
Honoka: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which is a great antioxidant.
Haruna: How about eggplants?
Honoka: Eggplants are full of potassium, which helps you cool off when your body’s too hot.
Shiho: You sure know your vegetables, Honoka.
Honoka: I’m always trying to learn everything I can about taking care of my body!
Maika: Let’s slow down a little. This is a barbecue, remember? It’s all well and good to think about the health benefits…
Maika: But what’s really important is getting the most bang for our buck! So let’s be more strategic about this.
Haruna: So can we get onions and eggplants…?
Maika: For sure. You can’t have a barbecue without ‘em! But not those ones, those are too expensive…let’s look over here.
Maika: We want to get the best possible deal.
Honoka: I guess it’s a little weird to think about tomatoes for a barbecue.
Shiho: Aw…but I really wanted some.
Maika: We can get tomatoes, too. They’re cheap enough.
Maika: If you eat nothing but grilled stuff your mouth gets kinda tired of it, right? Tomatoes will be a nice refreshing change in texture.
Shiho: Following that logic, how about some mozzarella?
Maika: Way too expensive. Rejected.
Shiho: Aw, I was thinking we could make some caprese salad.
Maika: Caprese salad at a barbecue? Don’t be silly.
Honoka: How about pumpkins and carrots?
Maika: Those are hard to grill because of how tough they are, so we’d probably end up just having them left over afterwards…
Haruna: What about asparagus?
Maika: Hmm, we can’t really get a lot given the price…let’s substitute with cabbage instead.
Tumblr media
Haruna: Substitute asparagus with…cabbage?
Maika: They’re both leafy greens, right? And cabbages are a little more filling, too.
Shiho: Can we get mushrooms too, Maika?
Maika: Good idea! We’ll grill them in aluminum foil.
Shiho: Okay, I’ll get some matsutake.
Maika: Whoa, no you won’t! Do you know how expensive those are?!
Shiho: Okay, truffles then.
Maika: Are you even listening? We’re grilling it in foil, enoki is more than good enough!
Honoka: Oh, hey, how about sausages? You can’t picture a barbecue without ‘em, right?
Haruna: How about these? It says they’re stuffed with herbs. Doesn’t that sound good?
Maika: These are way too pricey. If you want sausages, let’s get this cheaper kind here.
Honoka: Okay, can we get corn? Grilled corn would be fun.
Haruna: Hehe, yeah! It’ll be our dessert.
Tumblr media
Maika: No need, I’ve already decided on our dessert. We’ll get bananas!
Haruna: Bananas? To end a barbecue…?
Maika: Don’t you worry, I promise it’ll be good. Just trust me.
Honoka: I’m sure they’ll taste fine, but…
Maika: I’m pretty sure they have cheap ones over there. Wait here, I’ll go get some!
Maika leaves.
Shiho: Bananas for a barbecue? What is she thinking?
Haruna: I’m sure she has a plan of some sort…
Honoka: Doubt it, I bet it’s just her being as stingy as ever, you know? Just take a look at our shopping cart.
Shiho: Onions, tomatoes, eggplants. enoki mushrooms, cheap sausages…
Shiho: And apparently, bananas for dessert.
Honoka: Doesn’t this seem really underwhelming for a barbecue?
Haruna: But I mean…our budget is pretty limited.
Honoka: Then couldn’t we raise it just a little? It’s a barbecue! If we let Maika keep this up this is gonna be the lamest barbecue of all time.
Haruna: Maika-chan knows what she’s doing…surely.
Honoka: But just look at this! How are we supposed to get excited about this?
Tumblr media
Shiho: Here’s a question. What is the star of a barbecue?
Haruna: …What’s this coming from all of a sudden?
Honoka: The star? That’s gotta be meat, of course!
Shiho: Spot on. If it’s barbecue, it’s gotta be meat. If it’s meat, it’s gotta be barbecue.
Shiho: Let us band together and firmly present our demands to Maika: If nothing else, we must buy some good meat!
Honoka: Yeah, you’re right! We gotta at least have that!
Haruna: I do agree that meat is pretty important…!
Honoka: Oh, here she comes! Okay, Shiho, you start it off.
Shiho: I humbly accept the task.
Maika: We got lucky on the bananas, I found some super cheap ones! …What’s wrong? You guys look real serious all of a sudden.
Honoka: Shiho has something she wants to say to you, Maika.
Maika: Huh? Sure, what’s up?
Shiho: We hereby present our demands! One which we will not compromise on: Even should the price be a tad high…
Tumblr media
Shiho: Let us buy some tasty meat!
Applause.
Honoka: I second the motion! Come on, you too Haruna.
Haruna: Maika-chan…just this once? At least just the meat.
Tumblr media
Maika: Meat? …We don’t need to buy any.
Shiho: Did I hear that right…?
Honoka: Surely not…!
Haruna: What do you mean…?
To be continued...in Part 4

@more-than-a-princess sent: Hopefully she had gotten this right. "Okay, so I have gathered the following for today," Sonia began, taking items out of various bags and boxes and placing them in front of Wylan. "American sausages, American sausage bread," she began, picking up a package of uncooked hot dogs and hot dog buns. "Why are there not the same number of sausages as there are breads for them? How odd. Oh, and apparently hamburgers are important today, so I have included those and their breads. Now, there is also ketchup, this bright yellow condiment that is apparently mustard, this bright orange sliced thing that is apparently cheese, crisps, cupcakes with red and blue frosting and toothpicks featuring the American flag, and the light American Bud lager." But that wasn't all. With a small grunt, Sonia heaved the last box onto the table and opened the lid: full of fireworks, most unlikely to be sold even in the most remote American fireworks shops. "So, I am rather puzzled: do Americans blow up this food on the Fourth of July? I believe I have all the components to American independence here but how are they enjoyed?" She just wanted to take part in celebrating some of Wylan's heritage, even if America's customs were rather confusing sometimes. At least this holiday did not require mandatory chocolate: she did not trust the Americans with that anymore, except for their delicious peanut butter chocolate confections. Those, Sonia had to admit, were brilliant.
Out of place, might be the best way to put it. Using one of the open fields around the royal palace for a small (not so) private celebration of American Excellence could be considered blasphemy at that. Wylan is dressed the part of course. Rather than his usual suit and coat that he chose to don when going around in public he's dressed to the 5s. Or the Five-Oh, as it were. Stained white tank top with torn off jeans and a belt buckle that can (and might) be used as a murder weapon. Flipflops and socks. Perfect.
About the only American thing he isn't doing is carrying. This is actually unique compared to his usual, but not out of respect for any laws. Depending on who you asked he didn't exactly have much respect for Novoselic in general, which would be wrong, because he's a puppy for the crown princess. And behind his extravagant public image he was a force for helping out education and children's issues. To say nothing to how he has the uncanny ability to keep Sonia smiling.
All this wrapped up around the small 'barbeque' he set up himself. Charcoal grill, set of cheap aluminum tools, and a wooden picnic table to eat at. Sonia may have brought some beer, but Wylan already had that ready to go if the cooler of ice and Yuengling was anything to go by. That's fine and dandy. Another step of American Excellence would be drinking more than necessary.
Tumblr media
"Oh good, you got most everything else we needed then. Such a good helper you are." Wylan chimes happily, possessing none of the mannerisms necessary for his technical 'cosplay' of American Excellent Male #5. "You even brought fancy cups. Look at this! These fireworks! Mwahahaha." An eager rubbing of hands together as he passes by for inspection, making sure to apply a thorough smoocha to Sonia's head before sweeping in and getting things out and set up on the table. A tantalizing display if there ever was one no we're not talking about Sonia.
"Uhhh. I mean. Nobody's stopping us from blowing up the food... you even got some M80s in here, which'd do the trick. But! Plan of action is an old fashioned grill. Have I grilled before? Don't give me that look~" He dismisses her concern should there have been any. "Just because I can't cook doesn't mean I can't grill. I know what a good 'dog looks like, and the same goes for a burger. You got enough here to feed a good few people... and by my guess... yeah, about a dozen security guards are gonna flood in once we set off the fireworks. So yeah. Plenty. A dog and burg for each."
Assured nodding before he starts going about packages, ripping things open and getting everything set out. The charcoals were already white and hot and ready. So was Wylan.

"Happy America Day, babe. We're gonna make this one nobody forgets." Who knows how much trouble he's about to get in? This is a little louder and more dramatic than his usual antics after all. But so long as Sonia was around... he'd have the usual line of defense. To everyone else's chagrin. After all, good chance that the parents are gonna see this particular show.

Top 3 grills under $400 on 2023 Best outdoor grills under $400 The best pellet grill under $400 Z GRILLS ZPG 550B Review https://youtu.be/vrC-aswbuMU The best portable wood pellet grill under $400 The best  kamado ceramic grill under $400 Char-Griller E16620 Akorn Kamado Charcoal Grill FAQ   Welcome back to Little Pig Barbeque! Today we're reviewing one of my favorite grills, the Char-Griller E16620 Akorn Kamado. This grill is perfect for those who love BBQ but want an easier and quicker cooking experience without sacrificing flavor or quality ingredients that can't wait around on your smoker (darned thing). We'll be getting into all sorts of stuff today so stay tuned if you've got some time constraints like me or just need something simple in order to get dinner started quickly. If you're in the market for a Kamado-style cooker, whether it be big or small and you don't want to spend too much money on them. This video is perfect then because I am going over some of my favorite affordable alternatives that will get your mouth watering while cooking delicious food without breaking anyone's bank account. You've got to see this! Come with me, I'll show you how great these grills can cook. The Char-Griller Akorn is our pick of the day and it won't be long before your mouth water from all that juicy goodness coming off a cooked meal onto one's plate.  This isn't a new cooker; it's been out for several years. There is plenty of information on the internet, YouTube, and Google about this product so you know all there is to learn before making your purchase decision. So, I'm not going to tell you anything new that can't already be found on the internet. But let me give a quick run-through of why this product may very well become your favorite Kamado. This cooker is not your average ceramic-style pot, it’s metal It has double-wall insulation to keep food warm, and an air gap all around its top & bottom which means it will be able to hold onto heat better than most other pots out there. The Weber gas grill is a great starter product, but I have found that the Akorn brand provides better performance. This one holds my food at just about perfect temperature and it's very easy to use. This grill has a ton of features! I'm just going to take you through some that really caught my eye. The cheap and easy way to get a great backyard grill is by going with this cooker. You can find it at Walmart, Lowe's Home Depot, or anywhere else for under $300. Anyway, let's get into this first thing. You'll notice you got these nice side tables here - they're very nifty indeed. I've had pork on my previous visits with no issues at all; everything has been stable and easily stored when not in use (both of 'em fold down for storage). With the tables down, you can slide this into a small space. It works perfectly. Here, it has some hooks for your tools which is a nice feature. Use that often for my tongs and even the grill brush or grapefruit scrubber! So far this product works perfectly as advertised - no complaints from me. The wheels on this grill are not anything special, but they get the job done. There are two LA-style front wheels and then you have a swivel castor with an unlockable back tire for added portability. This thing is so easy to control with one hand. There's no problem going in any direction you want, and it feels really stable. The bottom of this handsome barbecue has a shelf that's perfect for holding your heat deflector or charcoal when grilling. If you want, it can be used as an extension to reach ingredients. The temperature control is so easy. For controlling your temperature, you got this nice sliding vent. Just like an oven, you have a dial with numbers on it that lets your cook know what setting they need to use for their dish - whether it's low heat or high. If you're smoking at around 225-250, it's going to be about 1. And that leaves a very narrow gap for your airflow there. The dial on this thing is really easy to adjust and understand, which makes cooking with it a breeze. You can set the temperature quickly without getting lost in all those numbers. The grill is perfect for those who want to cook at precise temperatures. It won't fluctuate more than 10 degrees all day long, so you can be sure your food will always stay warm or hot.  Well, this grill gets up to 700 degrees on the thermometer. I've had it pegged out just playing around with fire: no problem at all! One chimney of lump charcoal will reach that temperature before you know what's happening (700). You can get a really nice sear on food with high heat, but it's not necessary for most other cooking methods. I don't know why you would want to use such intense flames when there are much less harsh temperatures out there that create similar results and take far less time. The durable metal construction of this grill makes it strong enough to withstand any accident. The sleek design and easy-to-use features will have you cooking like a pro in no time. The durability of this grill is unrivaled. It can stand up to even the most stubborn tip, bump or fall without cracking.   Well, if you tip over a big green egg or bump into something really hard then there's a good chance that crack will spread across your whole cookware. This grill is built like a tank. Built to last and stand up against even the most stubborn of flames, this thing will be around for years with you - so long as it doesn't get blown away by some unexpected breeze. Let's open it up and check the inside out. This smoker has some great features, like the double-wall insulated cooking area which keeps food warmer longer. This will be perfect for those who want their meat slow-smoked or low and gentle. The heavy-duty stainless steel frame is perfect for cooking meals or wrapping food to keep it warm. The warming rack can also be removed and washed easily, making this an excellent addition even if you don't use it often. So, this will be either a good thing or bad depending on how you look at it. The best part about these cast-iron grates is they can be seasoned whenever you want to smoke or grill This means the seasoning won't wear off as quickly and it'll last for a really long time. But when you heat it up for the first time and make sure to keep your spice rub well-done, not only will that burnt flavor be gone but so too any chance of seafood stink happening. What you can see here is that there was some surface rust. But after a quick wipe with my handkerchief and then brushing it off, all of this will scrape away easily. I'm probably going to do some low and slow cooking with it next time, so I'll spray the griddle beforehand. When you heat up your food on this thing quickly after applying seasonings like a liquid sauce or oil will keep them from burning while they're sitting there waiting for me. The quality of the sear marks is really good. This product intelligently channels heat to ensure even cooking all over your food, which results in a beautifully browned crust on top while staying tender inside. The center insert here actually comes out. It will pop up and I believe you can get some accessories to go in there! Not sure what would work, but saw videos on YouTube of guys putting their own little things into this compartment like straps or clips for more storage space if needed. Well, I don't have any special tools to help me with my grill. It's just an open flame that smokes everything over. I'll get this grade out of the way so we can move on. I set it underneath for a minute. The accessory is really great. I ordered it and you can use it as a pizza stone, but unfortunately, this accessory doesn't come with the purchase - you have to buy it separately (but for less than $30/40$). This accessory is perfect for anyone who wants to cook with low and slow heat It lets you have that same type of experience on your gas grill, just like what happens when using an oven-friendly unit such as a Kamado Joe or Green Egg. People have said that the material is really durable, but some people reported cracks after a few months of use. I don’t know if it's because they didn't take care or something else entirely happened so be careful and don’t drop. The Char-Broil Egg has many similarities to other styles, but there are also key differences. The most notable difference is that it features fire bowl technology instead of metal inserts within the inner pot for ash disposal like you find with big green eggs; this means more durability and easier cleanup. You can use this grill to fill up with typically in AMO. You would have lump-style charts, but if you want an even easier way then just brick ETS. The holes on this great grill allow for the ash to fall through just like any other type of charcoal grill, which means you don't have as many messes and can easily clean up after yourself. The reason you can’t use brick ETS in other grills is that the holes are small and get clogged easily with ash. But, if you use briquettes I found that it is not only easier on the earth but also there are no problems when burning.  Well, this is what we call a heat deflector and it helps hold the temperature in. You got an air gap around which is great for holding onto that warmth. We'll get our deflector back here so that it works just as well. I can already tell that this is going to be an amazing product! The first thing people usually complain about with big green eggs is how hard it seems to clean. You have to take all this stuff out. You'll sweep up the Ash into your cart and then get underneath it, where you can kind of vacuum away any remaining particles with a brush or mop head before sweeping them back outside again so they don't come inside.  The designers behind this design have chosen to use a latch system so that when you flip the switch on one side, all of its counterparts will become accessible. So now you've got a fully charged Ash in there. All that's left to do is dump it out if there are any little pieces of grease or anything like that And they just slip right back into place. You may think that by clamping the heating element in place, you'll lose all of your heat or maybe even some smoke out. But this isn't true. When that's clamped in, that's gonna push that thing up to the gasket seal. The build quality is really impressive. It has no smoke or heat leaking out of it, which you can't do with a traditional-style Kamado because they're designed to let through as much airflow possible for fast and even cooking without compromising on safety standards. This thing is so versatile, it'll please any palate. If you're on a budget and can only get one cooker then this would be my recommendation for what's right at $300. You can do anything you want with your smoker. You may have noticed that I didn't say "smoker" - it's because there is no such thing. A good quality grill will get the job done just as well, and in some cases better than a traditional pitmaster’s tool of choice for many years now. You can also do some intense searing on meats or fish while grilling them at high temperatures for a longer period of time in order to achieve certain flavors that are only found by cooking these types of foods this way. The best temperature to run your grill is about 250-275 degrees Fahrenheit. And if you fill it up with charcoal, I've had the fire burn for 10 hours before without stopping. The food is evenly cooked all the way around, and anything you put on turns out great. And honestly - there's not much more to it than that. You just throw some smoking wood onto your fire; then sit back and enjoy your time. You can put your food on and not have to worry about it until it's done. The product is built extremely well, and you'll be really impressed with how sturdy it feels. I've seen some complaints that the negative side of this product is rust. Yeah, it's gonna start rusted immediately when you bring your outdoor fire pit inside and leave for an extended period of time without using protection from rain or snowfall; but if taken care of with regular cleaning then there shouldn't be any problems. I had another one before this, and it was outside for about two years. The rust wasn't bad though - just some surface grime on the bolts or screws that hold its legs together (no big deal). They were just a little bit rusted, but not enough that I thought it would be hard to clean up or ruin them.  In order to keep your grill safe from the elements, it is important that you do not forget about its exterior. Just keep it covered and make sure you're storing things properly in the winter months. That's all there is to do. Well, if you like this cooker then I want to know what's up with it. Let me know your thoughts on the product. Hope you found this review of the Char-Griller E16620 Akorn Kamado Grill helpful. The information it provides will be sure to enhance your knowledge and experience with any future purchases! The best grill and griddle combo under $400 Royal Gourmet GD401 FAQ The best charcoal grill under $400   Weber Performer Charcoal Grill FAQ I am here to talk about the Weber Performance Deluxe Charcoal Grill and how it will make your next camping trip more enjoyable.  This product includes everything you need in one package: A charcoal grill with a built-in gas ignition system as well as a side shell for easy transportability on any terrain type; durable construction made especially lightweight so carrying this around isn't too much burden even when fully loaded down - you'll be able to set up shop wherever there's space left over at home because let me tell ya', these grills are big sellers among outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. You can wheel it about if you want, or put it away at different times when not in use. There's a bin for Charcoal and one to hold regular garbage - but why not take advantage of its other features too? This little box here is our timer. If you want to cook in time, use that. Thermometers these days are really good at noticing when food's ready because they have a lot more sensors than just one spirit thermometer used traditionally past years would've had on them. With our kettle now black enamel coated, it will be easy for us to keep a clean temperature gauge on top. We'll also have vents at both the bottom and top of this grill in order to control its warmth or coolness as needed.  The grill is equipped with several features that allow you to maintain your desired temperature while cooking, including an ash collection system. The more air flowing into it and the higher heat around 180 degrees Fahrenheit will ensure thorough roasting of food inside without burning them on any side! After you've finished, there's an easy system to get rid of your coal and ash. What's nice about this metal bar that goes around the edge here, and just holds your lid. You don’t have to hold onto anything when cooking; it sits like so on top of our grill (in front) with two big handles for easy access. The bit patterns also allow you to stain whatever surface they are sitting next to we gutted part way through building ours which made moving coals easier than ever before since all surfaces got stained at once. Cleanup couldn't be simpler either -all one has to do is want their stovetop to look spotless again. The GBS system comes out, which is great for cooking pizza stones and other items. You can cook in all sorts of different ways with this grill! Inside the main chamber are standard drip pans so your juices will go right there too if you're roasting something like chickens or ducks; they'll keep their moisture inside instead of wasting it on an unneeded surface area outside where no one wants them (or needs more than one). This is how to cook like a pro. charcoal trays are great for grilling and roasting meat, but they also work perfectly as a grill surface when you want the flavor of direct flame without all that Ash versus indirect heat messiness! To use one simply put some Charcoal into each slot then place it over your desired cooking method (indirect vs middle) - either way this bad boy will deliver amazing results every time. The barbecue is a great way to cook food and also have fun You can use gas, which we've got here in this canister as well as lit by pressing down on it with your finger until there's an ignite button underneath where you put wood chips or whatever else suits your needs best. With the Weber Performer Charcoal Grill, you can light up your charcoal in no time. There's never been an easier way to get that fire started! Simply attach a lighter cube onto one end of it and then use its gas power from either below or above - whichever works best for where they're going on their grill at any given moment (and there won't be much transition). Once lit with ease thanks to both these innovative features combined together...you'll never need another method again when wanting high temperatures fast; just turn it off once everything looks ready. Best Propane Smoker Reviews By Consumer Reports
Tumblr media
Smoking food is among the best methods to fill it with flavor. A propane smoker is a fantastic method to achieve this. With so many available options, it is important to know a few points to consider prior to purchasing your smoker. In article will go over the most effective propane smokers available in the current market. Read on. You will find all the information needed to make the right decision on the best smoker for your requirements!
What is a propane-Smoker?
A propane smoker can be described as a barbecue that uses propane gas for cooking food rather than direct heat generated by wood or charcoal. They are well-known because they're simple to operate and do not require special knowledge. To begin your first smoke-out, all you need are charcoal or chips to smoke (and, of course, chicken, meat, and fish). Propane smokers are also cheap when compared to other grills.
The advantages of making use of a propane-based smoker
- High efficiency: Propane smokers work better than electronic smokers. You are able to control the quantity of propane you send into your smoking device so that you can control the heating. - It heats up quickly: this appliance is more efficient when compared to an electric cooker because it warms up quickly and requires less fuel to reach the highest temperature setting. This means that you will spend less time fueling up and more time cooking. - Great for use in camping: Propane-burning smokers are a great option for areas where electricity isn't available, like camping trips or locations off the grid, such as hunting cabins. - The low cost of using propane is a great way to save money compared to smoking electric cigarettes over a long time of use. The fuel price may be less than electricity; however, propane is far superior to electricity. - Affordable price: Propane smokers aren't as expensive as other smokers, such as the pellet and charcoal. They offer a great value for the money that you pay for them compared to other options, particularly if you don't need them often or require something basic.
Buying Guide for Best Propane Smoker
Price This determines how much you can afford to buy a propane smoker. The lower the cost and the less basic it will be, and there will be fewer available features. If your budget is sufficient, choose a product with the highest price since they last longer and come with many options. But, if you're on a budget, choose the most affordable model within your budget as it comes with all the features you require, like legs and at least three cooking grates with adjustable sizes. Size How much space will you need to store the propane grill? Don't forget that it needs to be set on a flat surface to be able to use it. If the propane smoker you have is too large, you will not be able to fit it in your kitchen. In addition, if the dimensions of the cooking space are not large enough, it will limit the amount of food you can cook at a time.  Features This is a crucial aspect to take into consideration. If the appliance isn't equipped with the proper characteristics, it will not be useful for you or the family. Consider the number of cooking grates in stock, whether they have a water tray that keeps the moisture out, and temperature controls. Safety The most important thing to be looking for when purchasing a propane smoker is whether it features an automatic shutoff function. If the cooking chamber's temperature is greater than 400 degrees, it will shut down the burner automatically and save the need to contend with any fires or accidents that could occur. It is also important to determine the ease of cleaning to maintain it in a good state of repair. Fuel It's important to determine what type of fuel you want (propane and natural gas) and then look for a model that can accommodate this. So that you can use the fuel you desire easily, a propane smoker can only operate using its type of fuel; hence, it is vital to have a supply of fuel before making a smoking device purchase! The best propane smokers below are according to reviews from customers and overall quality. The best-rated models typically include hundreds of raving reviews. Read the full article

The Best Smoked Beef Ribs You Will Ever Cook
When it comes to any BBQ platter, beef ribs are going to be the center of attention, dressed to impress. You may not realize it but smoked beef ribs are fairly new to the BBQ scene when compared to brisket or sausage. Nonetheless, this massive piece of meat is one of the most sought-after offerings on menus everywhere, and understandably so. When seasoned and cooked properly, these ribs will develop a dark bark-like crust, a beautiful scarlet smoked ring, and become fall-off-the-bone tender.
Tumblr media
An easy and delicious beef rib recipe that’s perfect for the smoker would be Smoked Jack Daniels beef ribs. Just think about it… You’re combining two American favorites: beef and Jack Daniels Whiskey. It truly is the perfect combination in a savory form.
Again, this piece of meat can be so delicious and tender, but only if it’s cooked right, and the best way to cook beef ribs is to smoke them. If you’ve never smoked beef ribs, the key here is low and slow. The reason for this is that not only are beef ribs a rather large piece of meat but they’re also not cheap. So when preparing and cooking these, you want to take your time with it. But not to confuse what you’re looking for when preparing this meat, it’s not about the actual cook time you’re keeping track of; it’s the internal temperature of the meat. So, yes, time is a factor but your best friend when smoking beef ribs is going to be a meat thermometer.
While the process of smoking beef ribs may sound a bit intimidating, the process actually is not. All you’re doing is seasoning the meat, and then setting a timer to make sure you’re not under or overcooking the meat. Here’s a quick overview of the entire smoking process.
Beef Rib Smoking Process: A Quick Overview
To get your ribs that beautiful smoky flavor, you’ll first smoke your ribs at 300°F for three hours. When those first three hours are done, you’ll spray the ribs with a mixture of Jack Daniels Whiskey and white vinegar, then smoke the ribs for another three hours at 300°F. This time, you’ll want to make sure the ribs reach an internal temperature of 205°F. Once the ribs have reached that internal temp, wrap them in foil or butcher paper if you have it, and let them cool for an hour. You can put the ribs in a cooler as well to speed up the cooling time. This ensures the ribs don’t lose all their flavorful juices. Once the ribs have properly cooled, you can then start slicing and serving!
The Best Smoked Ribs: Jack Daniels Edition
Ingredients
1 whole beef rib plate, about 3-4 lbs
¼ cup of Jack Daniels Beef Rub
¼ cup of white vinegar
2 tbsp of Jack Daniels
Smoking Instructions
Use some Cowboy Southern Style Hardwood Lump Charcoal to light the fire and let it burn for 10-15 minutes. Once the charcoal has turned white-hot, push it into two separate piles for 2-zone grilling.
With a beef rib plate, score the top layer of fat and season using Jack Daniels Beef Rub thoroughly.
When the fire hits a consistent 300°F, add the beef rib plate to the grill and additional add some Western BBQ Pecan wood chips. Let it smoke for three hours.
Once it has been smoked for three hours, add some white vinegar and Jack Daniels whiskey to a squirt bottle and spray the beef down every hour on the hour for the next three hours until the internal temperature reaches 205°F.
When the beef hits the right internal temperature, pull off the grill and wrap it in tin foil or parchment paper. Put the beef ribs into a well-insulated cooler for an additional one hour to let them rest.
Pull ribs out, slice, and enjoy!
As you can see, this recipe isn’t too difficult but is more so time-consuming. This is not a meal you want to prepare when you’re short on time; low and slow truly is the name of the game. If you’re tired of eating the same old meals, consider trying this Smoked Jack Daniels Beef Ribs recipe from Over the Fire Cooking. Starfall Cuisine
Constellation Bowls- rice dish in which each constellation name can mean a different variation of the dish.  For example, a Shining Cancer dish is a dish of saffron rice mixed with Aether Hermit meat, grilled Wetland Ghost, Wild Onion, and Golden Pepper. A Roaming Aries dish uses jasmine rice, pickled bamboo shoots, teriyaki Rambra shanks, toasted Fire Ant Larvae, and sashimi Spicy Leaf Sheep.
Death Bite Sashimi- fresh Pufferish and Tropical Seaslug (both local delicacies known for being poisonous) carefully butchered to avoid the bad bits and then sliced razor thin. Each piece is served upon a leaf of Herbal Plantain (an anti-toxin) with Glow Mushroom soy sauce and a side of pickled Irradiated Pear
Eye of the Nebula Salad- a pickled cold salad of Nebula Floater tentacles, Merry Melon, and Field Watcher eyes in a rice wine vinegar and garlic sauce. The Field Watcher eye stalk is mostly sliced thin, though one is typically left whole for presentation.
Mana Morsels- after studying the mana storing abilities of the Mana Thief, food scientists were able to create small spheres of mana in a gelatinous membrane. The spheres often contain vitamins and fruit juice like Aether Cherry, Irradiated Pear, Sour Green Apple, and Raspberry.  The perfect pick-me-up for the busy mage!
Amber Candy- using sap harvested from the Starwood Strand this treat often has small insects trapped within for a crunchy bite at the end.
Comet Crunch- a make-your-own bag treat, dragons are given the pick of roasted, dried, fried, salted, sweet, and sour bug mixes. Some typical bugs are the Glitter Lacewing- known for their crunch and salty flavor, Two-Tone June Beetle-lightly toasted with a nutty taste, Noxious Caterpillar- sour yet nutritious, and Tricolor Caterpillar- sweet and colorful. The bags themselves are edible, being made of Sweet Potato starch.
Archivist Special- a cheap noodle dish that can be quickly made in a pot of boiling water, its main ingredients are dried Redwing Hopper flour noodles, Soylent chunks, and a vegetable medley of Manaweed, Leechroot Mushroom, and Wild Onion. Some more upscale versions can be found in restaurants, but the librarians swear by the cheap stuff for their midnight fix.
Satin Mouse Yakitori- meat sliced into pieces or grilled whole on bamboo skewers over a charcoal grill and seasoned with a variety of spices or sauces (most common being Giant Dust Mite…dust and Glow Mushroom soy sauce). While numerous other meats and seafood are prepared this way, the Satin Mouse is the magically delicious specialty of the region.
Aether Cherry Soda- tart and fizzy this drink turns the tongue pink, hatchies often have fun tossing Spearmint candies into them
Java Java- a technique learned from nearby Plague Flight, the blood from Java Sparrows is dried and mixed with Maiden’s Blush and Cinnamon. The powder is then added to hot water and then sweetened with Blood Acorn to give a mulled and heady brew.
Starwood Shimmer- a mix of Ice Flight Vodka, native rose wine, and Star Moss to make a vibrant sparkly drink at night (and supposedly tastes best at night too!)

“Heads up!”
The words are shouted all too late as a football makes contact with your head, leaving you momentarily shaken as your vision flashes white. You stop in your tracks, hands immediately dropping the stack of notebooks and loose-leaf papers and flying up to clutch at the zone of impact. A wince forms on your face as you will yourself not to cry, fingers digging at your scalp.
“Shit, I’m so so sorry.”
The voice is laced with worry as a larger, sweatier pair of hands cover yours. Looking up, you make eye contact with a tall muscular boy adorned in sweaty football gear. His eyebrows are furrowed and is biting his lower lip in nervousness at your state of distress: injured in a messy sea of probably very important papers. The athlete quickly lets go of your head to bend down and pick up the excerpts of research papers you had printed out for your new assignment, apologising profusely all the while.
“I really am sorry, I didn’t think it would hit you that hard. Or on the head for that matter.”
You blink, trying to smooth your unkempt hair.
“Wait, what?”
The tree of a male stands back up and hands back your papers that he recollected into a neat pile with both hands and bashful eyes that are unwilling to linger on yours for too long.
“You...hit me on purpose?”
He scratches the back of his head, now definitely too afraid to look at you.
“Um, yeah...I swear I didn’t mean to hurt you though!”
You fold your arms across your chest, raising an eyebrow in bewilderment.
“Then what exactly were you trying to do?”
He takes a deep breath before lifting his head up, sticking out a hand.
“I’m Mingyu. Kim Mingyu. Arts major. Star of the college football team.”
- - -
The next time you bump into the attacking midfielder, he’s still a little sweaty. Only now, it’s just his hands that are perspiring out of anticipation.
You’re relaxing on the couch when he catches sight of you: hair splayed out on the back pillows, hands resting comfortably on top of your stomach and eyes tracing the imaginary lines of your apartment ceiling. Mingyu takes a moment to quietly appreciate the lilac of your sundress, the glow of your collarbones and cheekbones in the dim lighting of your apartment and the pink peach painted upon your lips.
His breath hitches in his throat when you look at him after he calls out your name, the Arts student quickly feeling himself blush under your gaze and perspire even more in his subsequent efforts to look presentable. He doesn’t think he could feel any warmer than at that very moment, holding himself back from reaching up to wipe possible beads of sweat forming on his forehead, until he hears his name escape from your lips.
“Mingyu.”
Your tone is soft, albeit surprised - so soft that he’s certain his heart is melting inside its chest. Mingyu wants nothing more than to run out of your apartment screaming in joy at how adorable every part of you is, arriving at his own dorm before violently shaking Seungcheol by the shoulders and furiously - but very gently, rubbing noses with his older friend’s blue British shorthair kitten Mia. Oh, and he definitely has to thank Seokmin profusely for inviting him to the party with his treat to barbecue at the grill house doted by college students placed on a week-long waiting list.
That fantasy will just have to wait until he finishes this conversation with you.
“I wanted to talk to you.”
That is, if he even manages to make it out alive.
- - -
Warm. That’s the only thing your mind can comprehend when he’s around you. Every detail of him, from his golden skin to his saccharine smooth talk, sends heat coursing throughout your body. The scene is so new yet so familiar: Mingyu dressed in charcoal slacks and a Prussian blue short-sleeve button up sitting opposite of you at a small round table for two in a cozy Italian restaurant nearby campus, delicately sipping on a glass of cheap, bright red wine with one hand and softly holding yours with the other.
You hang onto his every word as he admires the mellow spring breeze and the bright starry night sky, stopping yourself from telling him how you think that they couldn’t compare to his wide and curious eyes. However, the glint in his eyes as he shifts his gaze back to you from the restaurant balcony that is fenced by chipping wood coated in a messy layer of white paint tells you that he’s already picked up on your thoughts. Embarrassment rises to your cheeks as you look down at your bowl and continue to eat your pasta, being careful to not let the sauce smear to prevent the dream of Mingyu touching your lips being fulfilled.
Although, when Mingyu tries his best to not whine about you not giving him a chance to be romantic while walking back to your dorm but ends his complaint with a pout and the swinging of his arms, you stutter to him out of sheer amazement at his brazenness that you’ll try to be more open next time. Excitement lights up Mingyu’s face at the thought of going on another date with you, prompting him to hold you firmly by the shoulders and swoop in for a kiss on your temple. His uncontrollable giggles afterwards is like music to your ears, and you wish you didn’t reciprocate the gesture of affection so quickly that you might’ve been able to listen to his audible enjoyment just a little longer. But his agape jaw and clasping of his left cheek with both hands is more than gratifying enough.
He scoffs with a roll of his eyes, tongue poking his cheek, and your heart stops.
“Wow, I really I can’t believe that I like you this much.”
- - -
One of your many other meet-ups with Mingyu later is at one of his football training sessions. His face is gleaming and his team jersey is clinging to his defined body like a second skin, the neon green of his bib fluttering against the wind as he dribbles the ball with ease across the vast green field. You’re waiting on the benches, watching him finish up the last of his practice. The mock match ends with campus heartthrob Jeonghan kicking the final goal before shooting finger guns and winks at a group of girls seated at the adjacent section, the shrill blowing of the whistle bringing some players to collapse onto the soft grass beneath in relief. You rise to your feet and send a few claps the team’s way in acknowledgement of their hard work, eyes immediately locking with Mingyu’s at your show of support.
Despite the strenuous exercise, you still manage to pick on up his cologne - the same one at the party and during dinner, when he runs over and greets you with a kiss on your cheek that lingers. His action brings on a cacophony of cheers from his teammates, the captain Seungcheol patting him on the back with a dimply smile while jogging by.
“Let me get washed up, and then we can go to that new dog cafe on the corner.” The suggestion is mumbled in a smile against the warmth of your cheek, ending with another kiss before Mingyu pulls away and rushes off to take the quickest shower of his life.
As the two of you walk in the spring breeze, you can’t help but think that the world is on your side when watching the cherry blossoms fall. The feeling of his calloused hand tightly holding yours and his attempts to close as much distance between as possible by pressing his side to yours brings butterflies to your stomach, the nervousness and excitement persisting whenever you’re with Mingyu.
And when he leans in to plant a sweet kiss on your cheek just before taking a picture of you two crouched on the floor of a dog cafe cuddling a lovable Samoyed smothering kisses on your other cheek, you hope that the butterflies never leave.
- - -
“I think Wonwoo likes you.”
Your head snaps up from your notebook towards your study partner with wide eyes, your pen stopping its writing mid-word.
“Wonwoo? My Wonwoo?”
Mingyu doesn’t reply, just stares at you with an unknown expression clouding his face.
“Come on Mingyu, if you’re jealous, you can just tell me. And besides, you know that there isn’t anything between us.” You laugh, refocusing on your notes with a light shake of your head.
“That’s want I want to believe as well, but I don’t think that’s true. I think he does have feelings for you.”
Mingyu thinks back to all those times he’s seen you with your best friend, the way that Wonwoo looked at you, his eyes all too similar to how his own shone when catching sight of you. He thinks of Wonwoo, the best friend who doesn’t bat an eyelash when insulting any person on earth but doesn’t make a single judgmental comment about you, even when you do need the discipline. Wonwoo, who tries so hard to be physically and intimately close to you as possible without being rejected, allowing you to rest your head on his shoulder during lectures and sharing his drink without a second thought. Wonwoo, who Mingyu has made attempts to befriend, but can never find himself to be successful at doing so for vague reasons. Vague reasons that he now has come to understand.
You notice Mingyu being caught up in a trance, thoughts plaguing his mind as he chews on his bottom lip. With a stroke of his cheek and a mention of his name, you bring him back.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“How do you feel?”
He breaks gaze with you to look at the chipping of the table, the chewing of his lip highlighting the distress that whirls inside his mind.
“I...I don’t know. I want you. But, I don’t want to take you away from your best friend.”
- - -
You see him everywhere.
Running across the football pitch, hanging out with Seungcheol and Jeonghan at the campus cafe, in deep conversation with Minghao at the library. You don’t look for very long, afraid of what might happen if he caught you staring, but your memory captures his figure quite vividly. His slowly growing fringe covering his eyes that still manage to shine through, his golden cheeks that radiate the early sunset glow, his lips that trapped between his teeth when he stumbles across an obstacle. The details appear in your dreams.
Your subconscious thinks back to how you used to run your fingers through his hair, sweeping that fringe back so that you could gaze into his loving eyes better, how you used to place lip gloss stained marks on those cheeks which would shine on summer nights as he smiled in contentment, how you used to catch his bottom lip between your teeth on a slow Friday night. Even when you close your eyes, you still remember the darkness of his hair and the tan of skin as clear as day.
But as you continue to walk past the football team in practice, as you decide to hang out with Seokmin at a cafe off campus, as you choose to move your Thursday study session to your dorm, the fear of forgetting such beauties grows within.
Slugging back to the dorm after a long day of classes and grueling part-time work, the cycle continues as you toss your bag to one side of the couch and meet Seokmin’s arms at the other where he places slow, comforting pats on your head and back.
“Mingyu, huh?”
- - -
The coolness of the window does little to alleviate the blazing heat flaming your entire body as the taxi drives you to the campus dorms. Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath and try to relax yourself against the oddly slippery seat of the car, your mind drifting to the events which occurred just before.
“Fuck, I can’t give you the love you want from me. You know I can’t.”
You stare at the blue ocean breeze candle decorating the console table in the entrance of your dorm, it’s flickering flame barely illuminating the eyebags sunken into both yours and Wonwoo’s faces.
Your best friend doesn’t respond, instead he just fixes his gaze on the same light.
You wish he would say something. Anything. Anything to help let you know where his mind is right now, because you’ve grown weary of trying to read Wonwoo over the past few weeks. You can’t seem to understand Wonwoo anymore, especially when he refrains from sharing his feelings with you.
The thought of the change in your relationship with him brings tears to slip out, streaming down your cheeks. Your hands quickly lift to wipe away the hot streams, nose sniffling from what you wish was the cold of winter season.
Wonwoo doesn’t move. Just stares. His fingers tremble slightly, and his eyes glisten, but he doesn’t reach out towards you.
So you take a deep breath.
“You should go back to Hayoung. She’s probably waiting for you.”
Wonwoo clenches his jaw, then unhinges. Closes his eyes, then opens them. Takes a slow breath. In and out.
Seokmin comes around the corner, the couple of drinks in his system bringing rose to tint his caramel visage. He catches you slipping on your shoes and putting on your coat, and moves forward past Wonwoo to wraps his arms around you.
“Where are you going?” His question is muffled into your neck.
You return the auburn-haired boy’s hug, planting a firm kiss on his cheek before stepping back to take hold of his hands.
“I’ll be back, okay? Don’t wait up. And make sure that Woozi eats something, he can’t drink on a handful of Flamin Hot Cheetos.”
Seokmin nods with a pout, embracing you tightly once more. Walking back to the party in the living room, he stops to give a consoling pat on Wonwoo’s shoulder then continues on towards the said Music major reaching for his fourth shot of soju for the night.
You clear your throat, partially due to the lack of liquid consumed in the past half hour, and also in attempt to rid the fear lurking in the pit of your stomach. With your eyes trained on the floorboards beneath, you step closer to Wonwoo and reach out to grab his forearm.
With another clear of your throat, you look up at him. Tears gloss over his eyes, threatening to spill, but never falling. You see the miniscule quiver of his chin, a sight only beheld when being at such a proximity; a sight that you don’t think you will really ever be able to see again in all its vulnerability.
“Goodbye Wonwoo.”
- - -
He looks so out of place, sitting in the small retro diner wearing a grey taupe two-piece and shiny black dress shoes with his hair slicked back accessorised with a pair of tired eyes as he stuffs four fries into his mouth and sighs. You hear parts of the conversation they’re having, mainly of Seungcheol trying to cheer him up by praising him for doing well in the interview, but the arch of his spine renders the older friend’s attempts obsolete.
“Mingyu.”
Your voice is quiet but he catches on, blinking in bewilderment before sighing loudly once more.
“Hyung, I think I’m going-”
“Mingyu.”
You’re moving towards him this time, the sound of your shoes against the tiled floor bringing him to perk his head up and look around the diner with frantic eyes.
His gaze falls on you, and your feet stop its movement.
As he stands up and walks over, you notice that attached to his navy tie is the silver tie clip engraved with the initials kmg that you bought for his birthday, and that as he wraps his arms around your beneath your coat to sweep you off your feet, he still wears the cologne you bought as an accompanying gift.
You also notice, as you bury your head in his neck, that tears are dampening the shoulder of your thin wool coat and his body is shaking with each sob that he racks out.
"Oh, Mingyu.”
Thank you for reading this! I hope you’ve enjoyed it, even though it’s at its bare bones. I don’t think I ever will rewrite this the future to fill in the gaps, so I’ll leave it to your imagination. Thank you again.
Also, stay tuned for the version of this more focused on Wonwoo’s relationship.
