What I feel like truly sucks about being high masking is that sometimes someone who doesn't mask that trait will assume you're neurotypical and make all sorts of comments about how terrible you are a person for it when a) you feel not autistic enough to resonate with someone else in the community and b) the very behaviour of masking means neurotypical people rejected you too.
Like while I truly hold space for the idea that as someone who masks it means that I had the resources, time, energy to learn something deliberately (akin to having the time and energy to learn a foreign language), it also sometimes means being rejected by non-autistic and autistic people alike for being in the in between and having no one to turn to.
And then double that with people with marginalized identities being pressured to mask more bc of multiple identities squishing them into 'acting normal', it becomes an obvious divide of WHO speaks the loudest in the community and excludes others who, for barrier reasons, HAD to mask because they lived so long without access to a diagnosis.
And I hate it when this gets flattened to 'high empathy autistic people shaming low empathy autistic people' because it's not. It's about expectations to mask for others who are low empathy and high masking too. They're different concepts.

My speech and social interaction is lame as hell so pardon me if this is a weird question, but I think it's relevant since people are currently talking about allies being performative anyway.
Is there a way to posit a question without disturbing any communities tags?
Example 1: Say I want to ask is goblins in media are inherently antisemetic or not. How do I ask that/what tags do I use? Isn't "jumblr" or even "jewish tumblr", "gentile", or "jewish history" invading the tags and tacky to do when I'm asking as a curious gentile and not in the Jewish community myself?
"Just ask a friend"/"Get a Sensitivity reader"
Yeah I know but,
I'm not looking for single opinion and I'm not looking for use in any of my own writings. I'm legit just curious as an 'outsider' to this (if I do end making something that, for whatever reason, involves someone else's perspective obv then I'd seek out a beta reader). I think a lot of allies, when they hear about a topic or insight they legit can't speak for, want to see a thread/discussion/talk being held to get an idea of the broader opinion - not to have an opinion themselves just to know what they're getting into/what's this all about'.
It's the feeling of wanting somesort of insight without making other people feel like they exist just to be your insight??
Example 2: Say I were a trans sensitivity reader and a cis person paying me for my intakeopinion that'd be, like, my job. Noproblem. But if I'm off the clock and some cisally asked me if they should block people for playing Hogwarts Legacy because they heard from their other ally-friend that they should, what would I even say to that? What if I
have very specific feelings abt Harry Potter outside the controversy? would/how would my perspective be 'off'?
don't know if the person's friend was speaking in earnest or if the person asking me is just speaking in hyperbole? It's none of my business to get that involved, I know, but that helps me to know what to say.
don't want to have an opinion myself?
don't want to be asked that??? I mean unless I'm known by my watchers for tackling this kind of stuff how could I know?
There's only one demographic I belong to and that'd be people with autism and I gotta say I'm not always comfortable when neurotypical people ask me for my specific autist opinion (especially irl). I can't speak for every autistic, adhd+ocd person in the world! We're not a hive mind and we definitely don't all share the same opinion on something. Now, I may be more inclined or interested in eventually replying if I saw a post posited to multiple people. Like if I say something that read: "is it okay to headcanon 'x character 'as autistic when I'm not autistic; is that stereotyping?" I'd give my own niche opinion best I could as someone with that disability and hope the person I'm talking to knows that that still only accounts for me and keep looking.
Is everything I'm describing legit too distinct a question? Is this a Franki and/or just autistic person problem or does any one else relate to this feeling regarding being asked or asking around for insight? How much of this has anything to do with allies of any race/gender/minority speaking for other people?
Part of me thinks this is just my own incompetence talking to other people...but I don't know.
Thoughts?

It's ok that white autistic people aren't familiar with autistic people of color's experiences. That's not the problem.
The problem is how many white autistic people seem to think their experiences are universal, that they can speak for and over autistic people of color.
Being autistic doesn't take away white privilege. Being white and autistic still has privilege over autistic BIPOC, and even neurotypical BIPOC.
Neurodivergence doesn't exempt anyone from deconstructing and unpacking white supremacy.

The way people talk over Black Autistic people is... Mind-Boggling. Truly.
There are so many people in the autistic community that genuinely believe that them and Black Autistic people have the same experience, and that everything Black Autistic people go through they go through as well.
That's NOT TRUE.
Black Autistics face more questioning and doubt than White Autistics do.
Yes, all Autistics face doubt.
But when White Autistics face doubt they're often told 'You aren't autistic' - as in YOU in specific are not Autistic.
Meanwhile when Black Autistics face doubt we're often told 'You CAN'T be autistic'. Not just 'You aren't', but you can't.
As in 'You physically, biologically CANNOT be autistic because you are black'.
Do you see the difference?
I've had multiple people say to me 'I didn't know you can be black and autistic', or 'I didn't know black autistic people existed.'
Our mere existence as an entire GROUP is called into question. Because of our race.
No one will ever say 'I didn't know you can be white and autistic' because Autistic Representation revolves around Whiteness.
-
And yes, 99% of people with autism had communication issues.
But if you're a white autistic person you have never had to decode micoagressive racism through the lens of your autism.
- Especially at risk of your safety or life.
Allistic black people already have to carefully choose our behavior and wording with law enforcement under threat of imprisonment or outright on-the-spot execution.
Now imagine having to navigate conversations with law enforcement while also autistic.
Especially knowing that most of the time when a mentally disabled person is killed by law enforcement - they are usually also black.
Elijah McClain and Ryan Gainer - both autistic AND BLACK. Osaze Osagie - also black.
So even if you say that all autistic people experience this, it's very clear that Black Autistic people face it to a higher, more dangerous degree.
We are not 1:1. We are not the same.
This doesn't even factor in things like having to learn to codeswitch or speak AAVE. Or how predominately black schools have less resources for their autistic students.
Or how many professionals in mental health DON'T diagnose black people because they've never studied the Black Autistic experience, and thus cannot spot it.
Or how many Black people that ARE identified to be neurodivergent are instead labeled with ODD or BPD instead.
There are so many layers and factors to this that cannot be ignored.
The autism community needs to get better at understanding intersectionality. We need to get better at representing Autistics of color for ALL levels.
And y'all need to stop talking over Black Autistics. Our experiences are not the same. And that's okay.

Being Nonspeaking and Indigenous
One thing that I have struggled with most of my life is feeling like I don't belong to the communities I am a part of, because I cannot verbally speak my language(s). I am a Sámi and Inupiaq person who grew up with both my cultures being a big part of my life. In Sámi culture, one of the biggest things that connects you to your community is being able to speak the language. I can still understand both spoken Northern Sámi and Inupiaq fluently, but I cannot speak out loud, and I can only use Swedish and English on my AAC. My spelling is pretty bad in Northern Sámi. I can only write Inupiaq semi-well, and I can only write it in qaliujaaqpait (Latin script). This leaves me feeling like I'm not "Sámi enough" or "Inupiaq enough" to use those labels for myself. Many people in both my communities understand this, and have been very kind and understanding. There are many reasons that someone can't speak the language of their community, and disability is just one of them. Just my thoughts today.

does being POC actually affect how you present autism or is it just because of societal expectations?
Hi! So please take what I’m saying with a grain of salt and talk to other POC autistics! I am a white presenting autistic person. I do not experience the same as them and am just saying what I have heard from POC autistics and ND people.
Overall, it’s both? Black autistics and POC autistics are notorious for masking more due to the danger of them not masking. It is DANGEROUS for them not to mask. This is the same with a lot of POC autistics. Race is a complicated topic, and I recommend talking to POC autistics because they are MUCH well versed in this.
The societal expectations for POC is drastically different from white people. This needs to be talked about. Low masking POC autistics are 100% more prone to violence, violence against the police, etc etc. POC are automatically seen as “dangerous” so if a POC were to have a meltdown in public, or even stim, or even just get slightly distressed, then the chances of the police being called on them is drastically more likely then if a white person was doing the same.
POC autistics, especially black autistics, are held up so high on how they should act in public. From being told they shouldn’t dress a certain way, to they shouldn’t talk or act a certain way. I run into this all the time with my little sister who is black. Her experiences as a ADHD and learning disabled (dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc), is drastically different then mine.
POC autistics and ND, should be talked about more, and their experiences should be talked about more. Please, if you’re a POC autistic or ND in general, then I encourage to reblog this post with your experiences.
I hope you have a lovely day anon and this answers your question!

Refreshed intro post:

I'm super AuDHD, and also 20-years-old, Indigenous, transfem, genderfluid, and Two-Spirit.
I'm mostly neptunic (into girls and NBs), but t4t-only.
My special interests, as it stands, are MLP, MCR, 2000s-angsty-edgelord-music, and video games that are more unique, experimental, and innovative (anywhere ranging from Mirror's Edge, to Portal, to Rain World).
(I can be very avant-garde about video games)
There's also a fanfic/AU I've been wanting to work on. Stay tuned if you're interested!
☆∼∼∼
Wanna be friends? I'm currently looking for other trans, autistic PoC, between the ages 19 and 21.
☆∼∼∼
Make sure to read my DNI and BYI, either way
My Discord - @outcast5177
I do take donations, and I'd really appreciate them, but there's one small quirk about that. (Check link if you're ever interested in donating though)
Disclaimer: While I am Indigenous, I don't plan on making a lot of posts relevant to my people or culture anytime soon, because I don't want to be reduced to this dehumanizing spectacle of "wow, look, a Native". I want people to actually pay attention to my art, and potentially other work, before they just look at my racial background and make that into a primary point of interest.

Now that I'm growing more into myself and no longer suppressing my autistic and ADHD traits l, I'm having more moments where I'm physically unable to speak l, essentially "going nonverbal", as it's known.
It's freeing, but at the same time it's scary because there are a lot of hostile and violent people out there who will never understand what it's like to be neurodivergent.
Still, I'm thankful for the Infinite Universe for freeing me from the trauma, and bringing me closer to myself every day. ❤️
