THE HOUSE LIST TAKES A LOOK BACK: A DECADE AGO TODAY Jonathan Wilson Wallops Music Hall of Williamsburg

For some, Valentine’s Day is about love and romance, while for others it’s nothing more than a contrivance. And for those in the latter group, Music Hall of Williamsburg was the place to be on Friday night. The tone was immediately set as Jonathan Wilson and his band — Jason Borger on keys, Richard Gowen on drums, Dan Horne on bass and Omar Velasco on guitar — took the stage and launched into the opening (and title) track of Wilson’s second full-length, last year’s excellent Fanfare. It was nearly four minutes of simmering instrumentals before he sang the night’s first words, and it was a signpost of what was to come. 

Wilson and Co. performed 16 songs over the course of two-and-a-half hours, putting on an impressive display of ability — while Wilson is supremely talented (as a producer, singer, songwriter and guitarist), his four skilled companions equally matched him. It was like everything that could go right onstage did. Of course, this wasn’t for everyone: Some lose attention when songs are any longer than, say, four minutes, and there were very few, if any, only twice as long as that. However, the jamming was never indulgent, but rather exploratory, as if the songs were trying to figure out where to go next. But none of the tunes ever lingered; instead, it was like that was just how long it took to tell each tale. 

If you’re familiar with Wilson and his albums, Fanfare (which features appearances by Jackson Browne, David Crosby and Graham Nash) and Gentle Spirit, you’re no doubt aware of his ’70s influences. And in less capable hands, those influences would be all you’d notice, but his music builds on what came before, like the next logical step in the evolution of that ’70s-rock sound. Highlights included an upbeat “Love to Love” and “Moses Pain” — with many, eyes closed, smilingly singing, “Keep on riding” — Wilson and Velasco, face to face, waging a guitar battle during “Dear Friend” beneath a turning disco ball, “Can We Really Party Today?” with the crowd singing along, “Angel” accompanied by Pearl Charles (drummer for the night’s opening act, the Blank Tapes) on percussion and backing vocals, and an extended, slow-burning “Valley of the Silver Moon” — almost a suite of jamming — with those remaining hooting and hollering in response. 

The performance could have easily ended right there, at 15 songs in two hours and 20 minutes. The house lights even came on, but then the band suddenly returned. “Here’s a Madonna song,” said Wilson, and they launched into a 10-minute guitar-shredding “La Isla Bonita.” Sure, it was only the middle of February, but by year’s end, it’s certain to remain one of the top shows of 2014. —R. not to be that girl but when I see yall reference to / draw "that half blank half apocalyptic look" on Armand he always looks uncanny and like, supposed to be scary. Which surprises me because that is not how I envisioned that line at all lmao so mayhaps I am the problem but my interpretation was always that the "half blank half apocalyptic look" was the look he had when his PTSD triggered and he's partially dissociated, partially terrified, partially desperate, partially not even in the room anymore. flashbacking etc. which would also explain why louis was like So what's it gonna be? Fight or Fawn? your two trauma responses? You gonna deal with these feelings with anger or appeasement? Or your other coping mechanism turning it into a sex thing? Is that not how you guys perceived that line too? am I tweaking?

Because of The Stresses and Horrors I've the very specific brain thing where there is only one (or two) things I want to listen to, on repeat, every moment I'm conscious.

Unfortunately that thing is 2000s nu metal and/or club bangers (2000s defined roughly mid 90s to mid 2010s. It's a vibe not a strict definition of time).

Anyway. Humbling to be "oh this song! The new song from - nope, minimum 12 yr old song." Fml.

3. Least favourite canon thing about this character?

Okay, so my boy has a pretty solid canon, what little we have of it. But I do have a quibble. Sneaky sneak stealth man wears very strong cologne? I know it's to make people go "Huh, what's that smell?" but it just feels weird. (Also more lore plz.)

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

Given that most of the being roommates experience with me is just occasionally seeing me in the kitchen otherwise I'm just hiding in my room all the time, I feel like this is a yes. Although I may get murdered as I would be in the kitchen at 5am getting snacks when Danny comes back in post-murder.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?

His dick. I kid. Him actually being examined as a character based on his lore. This terrible gremlin man has a really fun personality through what we have and it seems like a shame to disregard it for Generic Sexy Slasher Man.

What I dislike, as someone who remembers the 90's, is when people don't bother to check when certain things were invented and popularised. Like DVDs. And AOL messenger. Those were like a decade later, it makes me feel so old when you think those were around in 1993.
