This scene has been bugging the HECK out of my since I first saw it years ago. And I couldn’t ever quit figure out why until now:

It’s obvious what the writer is trying to do.

They’re trying to bring back the “old Steph’s” charm. What everyone liked about her pre-reboot: her ability to push far beyond what anyone had to say about her and her abilities, even when she knows they’re technically right. But it never quite hit its mark for me and I think I finally figured out why: Steph isn’t hurt at ALL by what he’s saying. Even if this were pre-reboot, everything Crane’s saying would be true, and Steph would know that. She always knew that. She was an underdog who no one believed in and that’s what got us interested. But it wasn’t what made us stay.

What made us stay was that the fact that it HURT her that no one believed in her! She wasn’t as skilled, as trained, as smart or as wealthy as the others. And she knew this, she knew she wasn’t in the same league. She even eventually accepted this! But it still hurt her when people would remind her or try to use that as a means to make her stop what she believed in.

And it hurt when they saw her as less capable, even if she knew it was technically true.

But she still persevered, continued to smile, joke, be kind, care and “fight the good fight” as she put it. It all hurt, but she never let it stop her from being brave and a good person despite never truly having anyone in her corner.

She stood out for her positive attitude and sunny disposition despite the horrid nature of her surroundings.

She wasn’t invulnerable to being, well, vulnerable. But she still kept going, and eventually found herself along the way. That mix of relatability and inspiration is what made so many people love her.

R.I.P Pre-Reboot Steph, you’ll be greatly missed
