Spiel des Jahres Nominations 2024
The 2024 nominations for the three Spiel des Jahres categories have just been announced.  Although there are now other awards, this is arguably still the most prestigious award in board gaming and, certainly the one that carries the most weight when it comes to casual gamers.  There are three categories, the Kinderspiel (children’s game) , the Kennerspiel (“expert’s” game) and the most desirable…

Is that— bells ringing? Keyboards clacking? The sound of two thousand stressed writers pancing furiously about the floor? Ah yes, Yuletide.
Hello. MCYTblr. I am back again.
You are looking fine today as we move towards the end of the year. Is that a new cologne you're trying? New shirt? New glasses? It's working for you. How have I been? Well.
Well.
*I smack the wall, curtains spring aside, revealing my flip chart presentation that I've had lying in wait*
It is time for me to talk to you about Yuletide again. I was here earlier during tag nominations, but it's sign-up time, and I want to make sure everybody has a change to participate in this if they want to.
What's Yuletide?
Yuletide is an annual mega-exchange for small and rare fandoms. It runs in the close of the year, with a 1000 word minimum for gifts, with gifts revealed anonymously on the 25th of December and de-anoned on the 1st of January. It is easily the biggest exchange in multi-fandom-exchange-world, and last year more than 1,350 people signed up.
Why does everyone sign up?
Well, it's tradition, for one. There are a lot of people that only do Yuletide as their big exchange every year. It's a big holiday spectacle, it's really fun to see it operate and see pinch hits come out and get nabbed in minutes, and people kind of put on their holiday outfits and turn out for it.
For another thing, if you are in a small fandom, it's the one exchange where you can actually have a shot of getting a gift for an obscure manga fandom, or an out-of-print book, or a tv show from the eighties. If your fandom has five people in it, the odds are higher than average that two of them are signing up for this exchange, and hey presto, suddenly you're matchable in your fandom for an obscure podcast.
For another, and this is the biggie, the fact that this is an exchange for small and rare fandoms has led to a certain tradition and vibe for the fandoms that people nominate. People bring their most obscure and fun ideas, going, "hehehehe wouldn't it be fun if someone wrote a story about this", and into the tag set it goes. There is SUCH a spectrum of fandoms in the tag set.
This year there are 4,263 fandoms and 16,735 characters in the tag set. Let me just skim through and look at some of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are commercials, web sketches, art pieces, songs, music videos, board games, podcasts, a dizzying assortment of anthropomorphising different places, items, and ideas, and RPF from a marvelous variety of historical periods (so, y'know, historical fiction if it was published professionally). There are people who nominated tik tok sketches. Twitter threads. A bridge. Book binding techniques. You ever wanted to write a romance between Knitting and Crochet? That's in the tag set, and someone wants to prompt you to do that. Happy Yuletide.
So if you are at all the sort of person who likes a prompt challenge, BOY is this one just a MARVELOUS one. I know I personally am going to be signing up for Humans are Space Orcs (tumblr post) and Fandom Exchanges (Anthropomorphic) amid my more traditional fandoms.
And as for my more traditional fandoms, and the reason why this post has the tags it does (I would get to it eventually)— there is a lot of MCYT in the tag set! I put out a post saying GUYS, the smaller fandoms might apply for this, and BOY did people show up for it. I scanned through it, and the MCYT (and adjacent) that made it in is:
Karmaland SMP
Legacy SMP
Lifesteal SMP
Moonlight SMP
New Life SMP
Outsiders SMP
Rats SMP
SMPEarth
SMPLive
Witchcraft SMP
Pirates SMP
Mianite
Slimecicle Cinematic Universe
SBI Rust
Generation Loss
You could make an entire sign up, 3 minimum requests and 4 minimum requests, and only select MCYT fandoms. The wild thing is that you can only select a max of 10 fandoms to offer, so you actually couldn't offer all of the MCYT. ZombieCleo Witchraft SMP is in. Tommyinnit SMPEarth. Clownpierce Lifesteal. Tubbo SBI Rust. Oli Rats SMP. A wealth of options for the block folks.
So come, join me! What's that? You say this sounds excellent, you're in? You want to know how to sign up? Well this post is already long enough so I'm putting the rest below a cut.
You sign up on the collection here, using fandoms listed in the tagset here. Before you do so though, I'd recommend you check out the blog, especially their "how to sign up" post here, because even if you're used to exchanges, the way Yuletide works is a little bit different. Let me do a quick breakdown here.
Requests
# of Fandoms
You have to select a minimum of 3 fandoms that you are Requesting (a gift that you want made for you), up to a maximum of 6 fandoms. Each fandom has to be unique. For each fandom, you can request between 0 to 4 characters in that fandom, and 0 means "literally you can hit me with anybody", and the up-to-4 characters are the people you definately want to show up in the fic.
AND MATCHING
This is one of the things that Yuletide does differently, because most fandom exchanges do "or" matching, where they match you on either characer A OR character B, (maybe you only offered character B) and you can pick among any of the selected characters on the person's request to write for. Because Yuletide does AND matching, you will only be matched if you offered every single one of the characters the person has selected, and then you get to write for every single one they have listed in their fandom, unless they say differently in their letter. If they requested character A and Character B, you get to deliver a gift that includes them both, according to the rules.
Bu like, in practice, a lot of people are a bit more like "you can pick only one of these guys if you'd like", because that is how everyone is used to things running in most other exchanges, plus people don't want to be too picky, so you can specify in your letter if you definately 100% want characters A, B, and C, or if you're fine with just A, or just A and C, or whatever constellation of characters you're chill with.
This year they have added optional freeform tags you will click on, that will specify either A) use every single one of these guys I selected. B) I have specified in my letter which guys I need for sure and which ones you can swap, C) Dealer's Choice Of Guys Go Crazy.
DNW and Optional Details
Yuletide is an "Optional Details Are Optional" (ODAO) exchange, so technically you could request (or receive) an offer that just has the characters and then you get to go absolutely buckwild for the two month writing period. Most people, however, do not want to do that, so that is where you'll put in Do Not Wants (anything that would ruin the gift for you, from major archive warnings to kinks that you don't vibe with to headcanons you loathe), and some prompts and/or likes for your person to jump off of.
DNWs absolutely must be abided by, and breaking a person's DNW is grounds for getting turfed from the exchange. Following a person's prompts or lists of likes is technically optional, but definately best practice, and y'know, part of the whole spirit of the exchange. Most people are doing their best to adhere to both the DNW and the Optional Details when they do their gift.
You can just format your DNW and Optional Details on the Ao3 signup page (easy, fast), or you can link them offsite in a letter (fancy, you can do formatting, people do them in google docs or dreamwidth pages (the traditional and more accessible option)). There's a tradition of people posting their letter links here, so that people can get an idea for what sort of prompts and signups people are offering, and make sure they're matchable to people with especially fun ideas. Note: you do have to duplicate the data if you're doing a letter, cause if you put your DNW in your letter but NOT in your Ao3, the mods won't enforce it.
And while we're here, that last link is to a community blog that includes a place where you can promo your fandoms to lure people into signing up for your guys, or participate in mini-challenges within yuletide for people who specificially want poly relationships (Three Doves Challenge), or characters of colour (Chromatic Yuletide), or horror/darkfic (Crueltide), or smut (Yuleporn), or art (Wrapping Paper), or even more. There's even a poetry challenge!
Offers
# of Fandoms
You have to sign up with a minimum of 4 fandoms, to a maximum of 10, for fandoms you are Offering (a gift you are willing to make). You must offer at least 2 characters for each fandom, to a maximum of 20— but there's also an "any" tick box if you want to go full "hit me, I like a challenge" and you'll write anything (in the tag set) within a fandom. Each of your fandoms must be unique.
Writing Period:
Signups are open through the 21st, with assignments out by the 23rd, and then you have until the 18th of December to deliver your gift.
Important Notes
You must be 18 or over to participate in Yuletide (because you might be matched with someone who requests smut), and signups close on 9pm UTC on Saturday, 21 October.
There's a known issue where the safari browser isn't letting people sign up properly, (when you get an exchange this big sometimes things break), so they say to either sign up on mobile or use a different browser. So that will be fun for me.
--
And that's it! Yuletide! Just under a week left to sign up, and 351 people have signed up as I write this letter at 1:30am. I just refreshed it and now it's 352. You can sign up on the Ao3 page here!
JOIN ME EXCHANGES SUCH FUN LETS GO.

SUMMARY:
The relationship between Agent Marcus Pike and Daciana, is a game of cat and mouse, taking Marcus around the world—London, Tokyo, Rio, and now Paris. Daciana taunts him, leaving clues that lead him to her hideouts just a little too late, fueling his growing obsession.
Their relationship is more than just professional; there’s an undeniable chemistry between them, a tension that neither can ignore. Marcus, frustrated by his inability to catch her, is simultaneously drawn to her presence.
Marcus knows that catching Daciana may come at a cost—one that goes far beyond the law.
Shadow and Flame
Marcus Pike had spent his life chasing shadows, but none more elusive than Daciana. The assassin was a ghost, slipping through his fingers every time he thought he was close. For two years, their game of cat and mouse had taken him to every corner of the globe. London, Tokyo, Rio—each location held a piece of her, a trace of her existence, but never enough. She always stayed just out of reach, taunting him with her brilliant mind and unnerving calm. This time he was in Paris, a lead from Interpol, which required more red tape than any government agency back home. He had her this time, almost a little cocky in his thought process. Hotel St. Germain was non-descript, set back from all the tourist traps of Paris, and he knew that is why she choose it. Once room 1002 was cleared, they let him enter, gun drawn, finger nowhere near the trigger because something in the back of his head told him that she wasn’t here even before anyone uttered a word. He should have been surprised but he wasn’t. Daciana was always two, three, four steps ahead. Sitting at the small writing desk, he ran a finger over lacquered wood. He could almost imagine here sitting here, having coffee and breakfast, waiting for a call that would take her to another city.  He was frustrated and pissed. The intel was good but just a little too late, his fascination and obsession with her growing. Pulling the phone from his pants pocket, he called the number the informant had given them, expecting a recording that the mailbox had not been set up, jaw dropping when she actually picked up.
“Agent Pike, running late today?” She was more than just an assassin. She was a product of her father, mother long since dead, left to be raised to become lethal simply because he had no son to carry on the “family legacy,” or Brigăzi as her father once put it. Her skills were used for cleanup and something told her, she should have done away with the informant in France but she was needed home. A liability that would never happen again, unless it was Agent Pike. There was something about the games she played with him that gave her a high like nothing else had. It was the thrill of deliberately leaving clues for him, breadcrumbs that kept him busy but never allowing him to close the gap, not until she wanted to. Each clue felt like a personal challenge, an invitation to try harder, to get closer. “To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. I am guessing at this time you are in room 1002, wondering where I am now.”
In a way, he admired her, her skills and her ability to outthink him, mostly but admiration only went so far. He couldn’t forget who she was or what she did. “Daciana, are you forgetting Brazil? Wasn’t late then, was I?”
“No. I will give you credit for that one. Perhaps a half point since you only missed me by ten minutes, an oversight on my part. But today…You’re late by two days. Tisk tisk, losing your touch?”
He told himself that this was just another assignment, but deep down, he couldn’t deny that there was more to it. He wanted to understand her, to know her, and that desire was as intoxicating as it was dangerous. “You know eventually the cat and mouse game has to end. Why not come back to Paris, I believe a French prison is more suited to your personality, don’t you agree?”
Her voice dropped an octave, throaty, sounding almost sultry, like silk against bare skin. “Marcus, your lack of faith in me is disturbing.” Did she just borrow a line from Star Wars? Oh yes, she did, knowing it was one of his favorite movies. She knew everything about him, because what he didn’t know was that as obsessive as he was about her, she was about him. “Don’t you think it’s time to head back to D.C?”
“You know I am not going back until I find you.”
“Marcus, you know that you will not find me unless I choose it. As much as you would like to think is all about you, it is about me as well. It is about us. The little game we play. Are you growing board of mouse and cat? Which one are you exactly Marcus?”
It was the way she said his name, the way she said the word us. Warm, syrupy sweet, almost as if she was purring on the other end of the line. Closing his eyes, he let it sink into his subconscious, where he could play the conversation over and over. “Daciana, I am not in the mood for the games. I do not have the energy for you right now.”
“Oh Marcus, you wound me. That little blade sinking between my ribs, it’s filling me up with more than just blood. I think I may actually shed a tear so I will respectfully disconnect the call. J'ai hâte de parler à nouveau avec vous. Au revoir Marcus."
The game took an unexpected turn in Greece. He had been tracking her movements through Europe for weeks now, and the trail led him to Mykonos. What the fuck was she doing here and how was it he got a lead? He knew she had always been careful, meticulous, but this time, there was something different. A mistake? Perhaps. Or maybe it was another one of her games. Either way, he knew he had to follow up. It was there that he met her—not Daciana, not the assassin, but Kira.
She had grown bored, if that was such a thing in her life. The emergency at home was nothing more than her father having a tantrum over something she could have taken care of without having to go all the way back to Romania. Damaged product, she explained, was nothing that couldn’t be replaced, flesh nothing but a commodity. Shaking her head as she laid out on the lounge chair, the heat of the sun warming bare skin. Greece was beautiful, not her favorite place in the world, but it came a close second to Bora Bora and Turks and Caicos. She loved heat, sun and water. She should be scared shitless, leaving clues for him, extradition was not a joke but she was such a curious creature, wanting to know more than what reports could tell a person. If anyone did become interested in the woman by the pool, the only name they would come up with was Kira, an Italian on holiday. That was how she introduced her self to him at the bar. He looked frustrated, defeated and for a split second she felt sorry for him. The offer of buying him another drink wasn’t met with resistance, as long as she joined him. When the music started, it almost took an act of god to get him off his chair. Arms loosely hung from his shoulders as hips swayed with each beat, the pulsating of the bass caused pelvic muscles to clench. Taking his hands, she placed them on her hips before giving him her back, pressing her ass against him, she could feel his erection. He wanted her. Just as much as she wanted him.
Kira was warm, funny, and easy to talk to, with a smile that lit up the room. He felt himself relax around her in a way he hadn’t in years. He wasn’t one to normally talk to strangers, but there was something in the way she moved, how she didn’t make the entire conversation about her, in fact it was the opposite, letting him talk about everything but his job, only telling her he was from the East coast. When she convinced him to dance with her, he blamed the Ouzo, body pressed against his, he forgot about the hunt, forgot about everything but the woman in his arms.
Within a tangled mess of sheets, she did make him forget everything but his need to consume her. It was what he was doing. Consuming her from the outside in as his tongue slid over her clit, fingers sliding in and out of her wetness. Tiny mewling’s and whimpers escaped labored lungs, hips meeting the stroke of those digits before she came up on an elbow, hand grabbing the back of his head as she violently came against his mouth. Collapsing on the bed as he kissed her pelvic bone, body stretched out, thighs still jerking with the aftershocks, muscled arms spread her legs and in one motion, he was buried deep inside, strokes slow, hard, steady, dragging out the pleasure until she thought she’d go mad.
Lips wrapped around a hard nipple, teeth dragging across the sensitive tip before tongue caressed it, watching her face, bottom lip clamped between teeth as he raised his head, nose nuzzling the spot below her earlobe, inhaling her scent. “Again. Come for me again,” was whispered in against her temple, a hand going under an ass cheek, pulling her closer, thrusts a little harder now, feeling the familiar tightening. Fuck he thought, he didn’t want it to end but the way she felt, wrapped around him, walls clenching as she came for a second time, felt like silk wrapped around steel. He was so fucking close and when he asked where, teeth nipped at his chin before letting him know inside. That one word trigged his own orgasm, head thrown back as hips jerked against flesh, finally stilling, head dropping to her shoulder. “Stay the night with me.”
To say the sex with Marcus was amazing would have been an understatement but as the sun began peaking through gauzy blue curtains, she knew it was time to leave him. Slowly rising from the bed, muscles sore from the hours they made love, protested the movement, wanting to lounge just a little longer but she knew she couldn’t. Actions were quiet, quick, heels in hand so as to not wake him. Standing at the edge of the bed, she stared at him and on impulse she pulled her phone from the clutch and took his picture. Laying on his back, head to one side, the beginnings of a beard, no evidence of stress, wondering if he would think of her when he woke up. Emotions began taking up residence in the vacant space of her chest cavity and she knew she’d gotten too close. Turning on her heel, she slipped out of the room.
When he woke up later that morning, she was gone. No note, no explanation, just an empty bed and the faint scent of her perfume lingering in the air. His heart sank as reality crashed back in. The woman had used him, something he’d never had happen, and left. Grabbing his phone, he called down to the front desk, asking if they had seen her, the answer of course being no. Fuck. Getting up, he showered, replaying the night in his head, the countless shots, the sex and wondered how he could find her. She was just like Daciana, evaporating into thin air.
Two days later he was heading back to Lyons, the lead for Daciana going cold within those forty-eight hours. Sitting at the desk he was given, was an envelope, his name scrawled across the front, the note inside, written in a language that wasn’t familiar to him except for the name at the bottom.
“Marcus. Noaptea trecută a fost uimitoare, dar urmărirea continuă. Poate într-o zi ne vom întâlni din nou.
Daciana”
“Fuck,” was yelled out in frustration after he got it translated. Kira had never existed. It had always been Daciana. She had played him, used him, and now she was gone, disappearing into the wind as she always did. The chase resumed, but Marcus knew the truth now—he would never catch her. Not because he wasn’t skilled enough, but because Daciana was never meant to be caught. She was a force of nature, always one step ahead, always just out of reach. And as much as he hated it, a part of him didn’t want the chase to end. For Marcus she was more than a target. She was his obsession, his challenge, his impossible dream. So, he would continue the chase, knowing that it would never truly end.

Another WK! Jessie, the daughter of the Court Joker.
Jessie is the unhinged and unpredictable daughter of the Court Joker. While a troublemaking hellion, Jessie will do anything to protect her father.
Jessie possesses a chaotic beauty, a reflection of her unpredictable nature. Her wavy brown hair cascades down her shoulders, punctuated by streaks of vibrant red and purple, like a rebellious rainbow. Her dark brown eyes twinkle with mischief, a hint of something darker lurking beneath the surface.
Her style is a riot of individuality. Leather jackets, torn clothing, and corsets clash with playful touches like fingerless gloves and mismatched accessories. She favors layers of chains and belts, a testament to her restless energy. Her ever-present combat boots ground her, a symbol of her defiance against Wonderland's strict rules. A silver necklace hangs around her neck, holding the card that represents her father, a constant reminder of his imprisonment and her sworn loyalty to the White Queen. On her wrist, a simple "J" mark serves as a reminder of her future, the legacy she carries: the Joker's daughter.
Personality Traits:
Jessie is a walking contradiction, a whirlwind of contradictions. She can be charming and charismatic, captivating everyone with her infectious smile and playful wit. She thrives on chaos and unpredictability, constantly testing boundaries and upending expectations. Yet, hidden beneath this façade of carefree laughter lies a fierce loyalty and a deep-seated anger.
She is whip-smart, with a sharp mind that enjoys solving puzzles and playing games. She sees the world as a giant game board, constantly seeking new challenges and manipulating the pieces to her advantage.
Background:
Jessie is the daughter of the Court Joker, a legendary figure known for his playful charm and unpredictable flair. She grew up under his watchful eye, learning the art of manipulation and the dangers of unchecked chaos. He was her greatest influence, instilling in her a love for the unpredictable and a deep-seated need to prove herself worthy of his legacy.
However, fate dealt a cruel hand when the White Queen captured them. The Queen, obsessed with order and control and revenge, saw the Joker's chaotic nature as a threat. She turned her father into a mere playing card, leaving Jessie heartbroken and determined to make him whole again.
In a desperate attempt to save her father, Jessie willingly swore loyalty to the Queen, a pact that binds her to a life of servitude. Yet, she never truly abandoned her rebellious streak. She uses her newfound position to subvert the Queen's authority, playing her own game within the confines of the court, all the while plotting her father's release.
Motivations:
Jessie is driven by a burning desire to save her father. Her loyalty to him is unwavering, and she will stop at nothing to free him from his prison of cards. She also harbors a deep resentment towards the White Queen, her power a constant reminder of the injustice she suffered.
Other Information:
Jessie possesses a unique talent for manipulation and persuasion. She can easily charm her way into any situation, playing on people's weaknesses to achieve her goals. She also possesses a keen sense of observation, making her a skilled strategist and a dangerous opponent.
While her loyalty to her father is unwavering, Jessie is not afraid to bend the rules or even break them to achieve her objectives. She is a wild card, a force of nature that can be both captivating and terrifying. Her unpredictable nature makes her a constant source of uncertainty, a dangerous and fascinating force in the twisted landscape of Wonderland.

So, according to The Act Man’s latest video, the Starfield pronoun controversy is basically like the Doom Eternal “mortally challenged” controversy. Because both are over nothing.
I disagree.
The “mortally challenged” joke was satire. Specifically, of how corporations try to look good while they’re doing bad things. Often by latching on to trends and buzzwords.
It also continues the theme from Doom 2016, where the running gag was “this corporation is a bunch of stereotypical evil cultists, but also a stereotypical corporation”.
The Starfield thing is just using trends and buzzwords unironically.*
The only people who should be offended at the Doom joke are the exact target audience of such corporate newspeak. Like this article on GameRevolution that seethes about the “alt-right” because the writer doesn’t like the idea that anyone ostensibly progressive could be wrong.
Tumblr media
A more sensible progressive would say “heh, yeah, companies totally do that.”
Haven’t lots of pro-LGBT people been complaining about “rainbow capitalism” for the past few Pride months?
Tumblr media
Also:
Imagine being so wrong that a vocally pro-SocJus subreddit disagrees with you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, from Googling, I gather the impression that a lot of pro-SocJus folks went “nobody’s mad! Nobody’s mad! This “outage” is just manufactured by the conservatives!”
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/241065-doom-eternal/78526435?page=2
https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/9gfwwv/id_software_when_the_mortally_challenged_joke/
Which sounds an awful lot like what happened with Hogwarts Legacy. Bunch of progressive randos (mostly) got a bit tilted, then a bunch of people on the same political team tried to downplay the outrage, while some other progressives went “stop it, you idiots! This isn’t helping!”
Also, please note that HeelVsBabyFace’s video in the tweet is saying “bullying people because they play a crimethink game is wrong” (which is correct!). IIRC, his personal stance on Starfield was that he, personally, wasn’t playing it. He wasn’t remotely saying harassment is a good idea.
The “hypocrisy” is just...complaining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
* Personally, I think we’ve reached a point where using pronouns makes someone trans less likely to pass, especially if they also have a trans flag in their bio and/or avatar. Pronouns now serve as a marker of ingroup status more than their stated purpose, and I’m not sure they were good at that in the first place.
Similarly, COD Black Ops Cold War also did the pronoun thing, and complete strangers would somehow use the correct they/them pronouns for an undercover CIA agent. In Berlin in the 80s. Not exactly progressive. Not exactly low-key.
Not exactly logical.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know, there is some misleading editing in the Ms. Monopoly ad you posted from Twitter. It cuts off before they show that the company gave the girls money for their inventions and that the game is meant to celebrate women's inventions. It's ultimately still trying to turn feminism into profit, but I feel people should have the right to the full context before they do...whatever they're doing in the reblogs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtug5an4L8E <-the full ad
Do with this what you will, there's no need to answer if you don't want.
if you follow my blog, you know that i'm mostly reasonable, so i have no problem acknowledging this ask.
here's the press release for the hasbro thing
here's what the winning girl(s) get:
$10,000 USD. An all-expenses paid trip to Hasbro Headquarters in Rhode Island for “A Day in the Life” experience. A mentorship session with one of Hasbro’s top women leaders.
fair enough, with context, maybe it isn't as bad. or it wouldn't be as bad. if it wasn't Hasbro and the story of their flagship Monopoly wasn't what it is.
the history of Monopoly is not just the story of a board game but also a narrative about innovation, cultural adaptation, and ironically, the challenges faced by women inventors in receiving recognition for their contributions.
Monopoly traces its roots back to "The Landlord's Game," created in 1903 by Elizabeth Magie, who was an American anti-monopolist. Magie's game was an educational tool designed to illustrate the negative aspects of monopolies and was based on the economic theories of Henry George, particularly his ideas about taxation.
basically the game had two sets of rules: an anti-monopolist set, where all players were rewarded when wealth was created, and a monopolist set, where the goal was to create monopolies and crush opponents. this contrast in the rules were a representation of Elizabeth Magie's intention to demonstrate how monopolies were counter-productive and harmful to society.
despite her efforts to highlight the moral dilemma of monopolies, the monopolist rules of her game proved to be more popular, ironically turning out to have almost the complete opposite effect vs. what she originally intended.
the shift for Monopoly from an educational tool to a mainstream in-home board game began when Charles Darrow was introduced to a version of Magie's game in 1932 and began distributing it under the name "Monopoly."
Darrow sold his version to Parker Brothers in 1935, which eventually made him a multi-millionaire due to the royalties he received and cemented his legacy forever. he was the first game inventor to ever make this kind of money. and it wasn't even his game.
so yes, it is nice of Hasbro to give these lucky girls $10k (2022 revenues approximately 5.86 billion U.S. dollars) and fly them to... Rhode Island... for a day of... capitalism... and to... tour... the headquarters... it's just kind of ironic, considering that they deny the feministic origins of the game that cemented their status as a multi-billion dollar toy giant.
also, they just laid a ton of people off. if you needed any other reason to dunk on them.

highlights from the last ten days,
My friend was in town from February 22 - 27 :) We went to see a beautiful historical play about Henrietta Leavitt, an astronomer circa the early 1900s, at my favorite local theatre. We went to a brunch potluck with friends, which was filled with good company and delicious homemade brunch treats in a sunny kitchen. We had homemade Indian dinners at home, and watched all of season one of the Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender, which rekindled my love for the show. We played my favorite board game (Splendor!) and went out for Italian food and sushi, and walked around the frozen lake on a cold morning. :)
I finally got to see Oppenheimer at a cozy friends' movie night last night!
I've had some great cooking wins over the past couple of days. Yesterday's dinner was sirloin steak topped with mushrooms, with crispy air fryer potatoes and oven-roasted broccoli on the side. Tonight I made buffalo chicken wings, sautéed Old Bay green beans, and more crispy potatoes. I normally don't cook side dishes and just stick with roti or rice + the main dish, so I've really enjoyed this experience of cooking larger meals.
Related - to me, freedom, and one of my favorite parts of being an adult, is being able to choose what I want to eat for dinner every night and make that happen.
I've been loving Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee, book three in her Green Bone Saga. It's such a treat to have a trilogy that spans 20+ years of the characters' lives.
I've discovered a new favorite neighborhood spot. It's a little local cafe very close to my house. The walls in the lounge are painted my favorite light pink, and there are floor-to-ceiling windows. Best of all, it's always empty, peaceful and quiet, when I stop in on a weekday morning, once or twice a week. I get a small latte with toasted marshmallow syrup, and I like to sit by the window when I drink it. The vibes in this cafe are impeccable.
It's been sunny with blue skies several days this week, and seeing sun come in through the windows feels so good after the cloudy winter here.
challenges,
Work has been absolutely batshit crazy this week and last week :// The volume and the leadership role that I have for a few different projects is getting to me, and I'm mentally exhausted. I also have to work for part of the day tomorrow. I'm SO excited that I have some time off coming soon. I just need to make it until the end of day Wednesday!

Writer Interview Game
Thank you for the tag @theladyofshalott1989! 💕 Yours was such an interesting read (can agree with your only child syndrome - im one as well ✌️) and it's something to think about since it's my first time receiving a tag game this long 😅
When did you start writing?
I remember making a lil homemade "Book of Jokes" (simply made out of elementary paper and just binding them with glue), my mom still has it somewhere she said she keeps as a memento.
But ive found i had a way to express myself in essay writing and with the other blogs i had before (blogspot days), before i really practiced creative writing back in 2019 by joining some writing groups online. They gave prompts and we spin a short story for it, which i greatly enjoyed doing. Joined Nanorimo in 2020 and even self published a couple of ebooks from that (not really confident to market it tho...)
But Fanfiction writing? ive honestly joined many a fandom but only Hogwarts Legacy was the one who called out to me to write something about my MC!
Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?
I curiously read smut cuz for the life of me i cannot write a sexy, intimate scene in detail - my brain just blanks when i want to write it, so always back to the drawing writing board for me 🫣
Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?
No one in particular really, tho i transitioned from reading the kids' books (Magic Treehouse, Geronimo Stilton and Bailey School Kids) to straight up P.C. Cast and her Goddess Summoning series. The only good 'ol YAs that touched my soul were Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver Trilogy, Emma Raveling's Ondine Quartet, Courtney Alameda's Shutter, Jess Rothenberg's The Catastrophic History of You and Me, and last but not the least (which also shaped my love for morally grey characters, Julian goddammit i cried teenage tears for him 😢) L.J. Smith's The Forbidden Game and these are most of the writers i remember growing up reading (i never even read the HP books... whoops!)
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
i don't really have a fixed one, i used to go to those co-working spaces when i started with fanfiction writing but i can type out a quick short story in notepad on any pc as long as the mood strikes. i've also adapted to typing on my cp too (OneDrive is my friend in syncing it on both my mobile and laptop) 😁
What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?
Peace and quiet. i usually have the best ideas late into the night when everyone is asleep, and im up like a gremlin, awake and typing away on my pc (those subliminal writer sounds work on me too) and there comes a time that i just need to write the words out when they've been brewing in my head for a fortnight too long...
Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?
3 love interests and the 1 mc who does not have the leisure for romance (i did it once, i unwittingly just realized im doing it now with my fanfic... oh well.)
What is your reason for writing?
Granted i haven't written any original works since starting my fanfiction (all my brain juice goes into that WIP, i guess), it does give me a sense of purpose and a nice lil side hobby project i still quite enjoy coming back to every now and then ✍️🤓
Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?
i don't get alot so i love all of them! The ones that comment on how sweet the interactions were between the characters keeps me motivated tho, it's challenging enough for me to be naturally affectionate irl so i really think my dialogue over before capturing it in words.
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
i guess just somehow who'll not leave them hanging on an unfinished work 😅 at this point in time i still love adding chapters to it, but it does take time for me (between working and adjusting in a new country). i greatly thank them for their patience and support of my work! 💌
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Slow-burns. 'Cuz maybe it takes me awhile to really understand a certain level of affection that's why im more interested in seeing how it develops. Also i do get comments on how i really visually describe a scene real well, so i hope that's true and im not really dragging it out? 🤔
How do you feel about your own writing?
i personally feel like i lack a back and forth dialogue in how i write, as i tend to be introspective, though overall i love the art of writing itself! There are days i read a random work of mine just to get motivated, read the comments on that and get encouraged more. 🥰
Hope these lovelies dont mind me tagging them 💌 @glutengoblin @animasola86 @evaslytherpuff @little-emerald-snake

Welcome, and Happy New Year!
Good afternoon, Simblr!
It's been a while since I've said hello to my new followers, and over the past few months quite a few of you have come on board so I thought I'd take a little time out to say heeeeeey and introduce myself.
I am Jes2G, but you can call me Jess. I like making sims and writing stories. I also occasionally make video tutorials about various things (mostly making sims and writing lol). I'm working on two stories currently. I've got a rotation style legacy going on as well as story based on the ISBI challenge.
Outside of simming, I like playing other games (mostly Valheim and Cities: Skylines 2 right now), dabbling in graphic design, drinking hot beverages (mostly tea, but I've become quite a coffee snob lol), chewing gum, and laughing until I can't breathe.
I don't talk a whole lot, but I'll talk your ear off about my characters and stories, so feel free to send me asks about them. And if you're shy like me, include this emoji so I know not to answer publicly. 🤐
You can read my pinned post for more info about my content. I appreciate you following me and hope you find something here that sparks joy. See you around!

The Psychology of Board Games: Why We Love Ludo and Beyond
Tumblr media
Board games have been a cornerstone of leisure and entertainment across various cultures for centuries. They not only serve as a means of fun but also engage players in ways that few other activities can. This article delves into the psychology behind the enduring appeal of board games, with a special focus on the classic game of Ludo. As we explore this fascinating topic, we will discover why games like Ludo continue to captivate and entertain players of all ages.
Board Game Fascination
The allure of board games transcends age, culture, and geography. From ancient times to modern-day Ludo apps that allow friends to play online on platforms like Zupee, the basic human connection facilitated through these games remains strong. Social and psychological factors play significant roles in their widespread appeal. These games often require cooperation, strategy, and a bit of competition, ingredients that are inherently compelling to the human psyche.
Understanding Ludo
Ludo, derived from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, has a rich history. Introduced to Britain in the late 19th century, it quickly became a household favorite. Today, Ludo apps make it easy for anyone to download the game and start playing with friends online, continuing its legacy. The simplicity and the random luck component of Ludo, combined with strategic decision-making, offer a balanced challenge that appeals to both young and older players alike.
The Psychological Pull
What makes board games like Ludo so engaging? Psychological aspects such as the thrill of the chase in capturing an opponent's token and the suspense of dice rolls dramatically enhance the engagement. Moreover, strategic thinking and planning ahead can give players a sense of control and accomplishment.
Nostalgia and Comfort
For many, board games like Ludo are woven into their childhood memories. Playing these games can evoke a comforting sense of nostalgia, transporting adults back to their youth and simpler times. This connection to pleasant past experiences is a powerful reason why many continue to reach for board games as their preferred form of entertainment.
Social Connection
One of the most significant aspects of playing board games is the social interaction they entail. Whether you're gathering around a physical game board or connecting via a Ludo app, the game acts as a medium for socialization, fostering bonds and enhancing relationships. The cooperative and competitive elements of these games can also serve as ice-breakers in various social settings.
Cognitive Benefits
Board games like Ludo are not just about fun; they also offer numerous cognitive benefits. Engaging in these games can improve critical thinking, boost problem-solving skills, and enhance memory. Regularly playing board games can help keep the mind sharp and agile, which is especially beneficial as one ages. You can also play ludo with friends online on platforms like Zupee & win real cash.
Emotional Engagement
The emotional highs and lows experienced during gameplay are integral to the board gaming experience. The suspense of uncertainty, the excitement of a risky move paying off, and even the disappointment of a loss are all emotionally engaging. These experiences can help players learn resilience and emotional control.
Beyond Ludo
While Ludo has its unique appeal, the world of board games is rich with variety. From strategy-heavy games like Chess and Go to modern classics like Catan and Ticket to Ride, the psychological draws of these games are as diverse as their gameplay mechanics. Each game offers a different way to challenge the mind, engage emotionally, and connect with others.
Board games like Ludo offer more than just entertainment. They provide intellectual stimulation, emotional catharsis, and a bridge to connect with others, making them a beloved pastime for many. As we explore the psychology of our favorite games, we gain insights into why these games continue to play a significant role in our lives. Whether through traditional boards or digital downloads like those on Zupee, the magic of board games endures, promising continued enjoyment and discovery for players around the world.

Seeing as a wise person told me a limit is a non-existent entity....
BRADY, ma dear boy. I heard you are giving someone very dear to me a lot of trouble. Here is a stack of cards for you:
The Empress The Emperor The Lovers The Hanged Man The Tower The Hierophant in Reverse The Chariot in Reverse Judgment in Reverse The World in Reverse (and if said person dear to me isn't completely swamped now... can I have a wild card question of choice for Kathleen, Liam and Rey each? Pretty please?)
Here we go... mystic Brady has a lot to say about his cards...
The Empress: Who has been a positive female figure in your character’s life? His housekeeper and her book club. He was born into a pretty bad situation between his mother’s health and his father’s legal troubles and was taken in by Sidonia Van der Snyte to be spoiled by Mae Bancroft, Aurelia Lupino, and {Redacted}.
The Emperor: Who has been a positive male figure in your character’s life? Hahahahhaha. What? Maybe a tour guide at the Met. Fitzgerald & Van Gogh.  Near the end of his life, he would credit Bob Dylan & Jack Kerouac as people he admires. He took after his amazing grandfather, but Brad died a few years before Brady was born (which is what caused the disaster in the line of succession in Fear Thy Nature)
The Lovers: Which of your character’s relationships has been the most positive? (Romantic or otherwise) So far, that is the one with his daughter, Eliza Quinn. Her mother was a close second, but for reasons still unknown, she is away at the time of his story in book 4.
The Hanged Man: When has your character needed to step back and look at things from a different perspective? Brady regularly looks at things from every perspective but the most rational. By the end of his book, he is forced to look at things in black and white (his least favorite way of thinking) and figure out if he’s afraid, ashamed, or apathetic when it comes to his legacy as the next link in The Pendleton Tradition.
The Tower: When has your character lost an ideal or relationship? His relationship with Eliza Quinn’s mother is still unclear to me, but they had conflicting priorities at one point. At the start of the book, she is away, working for The Pendleton Apothecary as a chemist. Brady says he doesn’t approve, but he’s also grateful she’s ‘holding his place’ on the board while he plays with his paintbrush and raises their daughter away from the chaos.
The Hierophant in Reverse: When has your character’s personal beliefs been challenged? Brady will come to understand the power of what his family business means to people when their polio research helps his neighbor’s not-so-secret lover.
The Chariot in Reverse: When has your character’s pride or arrogance been their downfall? He is a Pendleton; whether he likes it or not, his pride is a problem in every sentence of his book.
Judgment in Reverse: When has your character found it difficult to forgive themselves? He may realize that his “freedom” comes at a major cost to Eliza Quinn and deal with the consequences that come with trying to keep her from her birthright as a ‘real’ Pendleton.
The World in Reverse: What is your character holding back? There is so much grief and depression in this moody boy. He is isolated and broody, and he wants to express himself but can’t find the way. The poor little rich boy is furious he wasn’t born a starving artist. Until he sees firsthand what that looks like for people who don’t have millions in the bank.
Kathleen: The Star: When has your character been most hopeful? The Pendleton Apothecary released an experimental polio treatment in the same year the New York Yankees won the World Series. I am afraid to ask her to choose.
Liam: The Magician: How does your character unleash their creativity or resourcefulness? He moved on from small-time swindling, playing the shell game & blackjack with a stacked deck on street corners, to hustling the college boys in high-stakes chess matches in the park.
Rey: The Hermit: Write about a time your character did some soul searching. What did they find? I’ll let you know when Rey stops soul-searching, but don't count on it. You know how that goes.
