bottlerock 2025- in review
missed a lot of daily posts this weekend because i got asked to work at my local music festival last minute. upside: heard a ton of new artists and music!
here's the standouts from the specific stage i worked this weekend:
spiritual cramp (day 1)
post-punk rock with reggae influences. lead singer goes hard. i had a lot of fun and the crowd did too! they were happy to be playing in the bay
my pick (from setlist*): dog in a cage
balthvs (day 1)
psychedelic rock. very funky and they all had great fits. not too much singing so it was a nice break from all of the lyric-heavy rock.
my pick (no setlist): year of the snake
dope lemon (day 1 headliner)
indie rock. went harder live than studio for sure. people were very excited for this guy.
my pick (no setlist): john belushi
bob schneider (day 2)
country/folk rock. very much john mayer vibes. great guitarist. his set was 80% music and 20% stand-up. he was definitely having a great time.
my pick (from setlist): big blue sea
la lom (day 2)
cumbia/psychedelic. one of my favs from the whole weekend. guy on the double bass was tearing it up!!! guitarist was wearing these yellow crushed velvet flares i was OBSESSED with.
my pick (no setlist): alacrán
mon laferte (day 2 headliner)
latin pop. my fav of the weekend BY FAR. her voice is incredible, complete powerhouse. and she had this red/purple leather corset with red hose and a big belt and a purple feather boa, cuntiest outfit ever. her two background dancers ATE. this was also the most fun crowd, they were dancing it up!!!
my pick (no setlist): otra noche de llorar
eggy (day 3)
funk/psychedelic rock. they basically jammed for an hour. great cover of bennie and the jets.
my pick (from setlist): razi >
the war and treaty (day 3)
country soul/blues. holy fucking shit. this was the most impactful set for me, the crowd, and the artist. the biggest crowd at my stage to the point that we had to do a 1-in 1-out situation for VIP. they were incredible. you could feel the love.
my pick (from setlist): blank page
*i was working so couldn't pay attention to the names of songs. if the setlist is online, i'm picking from that. if not, i'm picking a song i either remember or that represents the vibe

Tell me how do you make a superman?
With courage and a steady hand,
Conviction and a damn good attitude,
Spiritual and moral fortitude?
But don’t forget the flowerparts…
A soft touch and an open heart.
A rainbow and some empathy.
Compassion and sympathy.
Don’t forget the, ‘I love you’’s,
Oh, and, ‘I forgive you’’s too.
It’s the little things that separate
The good from the great.

"Running On Empty" por Bob Schneider. Del álbum Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne (2014).
Everyone I know, everywhere I go People need some reason to believe I don’t know about anyone but me If it takes all night, that’ll be all right If I can get you to smile before I leave
Bob Schneider delivers the saddest version of “Running On Empty” I’ve ever heard. A poignant song about the struggles of life, and one that somehow I’ve never really thought of as sad or poignant, and then listening to this cover, now, it’s strangely and startlingly empathetic, on growing old and growing up.
It’s off the new Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne compilation, featuring Blind Pilot & Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Rait, Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby and others.
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Head premiered on November 6, 1968. (Edit featuring the two Tork songs - in the studio and demo versions, respectively - and a line from the movie.)
“What’s happening as time goes on is that the movie [Head] is becoming a chronicle of an age. At the time, it was just a chronicle of the Monkees.” - Peter Tork, The Monkees Tale (1985) Q: “What do you think of the music from the film ‘Head’?” Peter Tork: "Well, since I wrote and produced two of the songs myself, I think it’s fine. I did ‘Can You Dig It?’ And ‘[Long Title:] Do I Have To Do This All Over Again.’” - Goldmine, 1982 “The funny thing is that the lyrics [to ‘Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again?’] came to me right out of the air. I was just playing those chord changes on the guitar, and I opened my mouth and that’s what popped out. The song was weirdly prophetic. I had no idea that was going to be my attitude about anything having to do with music when I wrote that song." - Peter Tork, Listen To The Band liner notes (more about "Long Title..." here) “‘Can You Dig It’ is about the Tao. The hook line I wrote in my dressing room on the set [of the television series in 1967]. The chords for the chorus I’d written in college, and [they] had just stuck with me.” - Peter Tork, Head box set liner notes (more about "Can You Dig It?" here) "I think they're ['Can You Dig It?' and 'Long Title...'] the best songs in the movie [Head]. I love both of them. I thought they were just terrific. He had plugged himself into that whole Stephen Stills connection and was working with those guys. I think they fit the movie better than anything did. When those two songs start up in the movie, it comes alive for me.” - Michael Nesmith, Head box set liner notes “Thorkelson expressed a preference for the Monkees’ ‘Headquarters’ album, because it was the group’s first self-performed album […]. The soundtrack to the [...] movie ‘Head’ also is among Thorkelson’s favorites. ‘It was a little tinny, but back then I guess we were a little tinny,’ he said. ‘That movie will always look good,’ commented Thorkelson.” - The Bowling Green News Revue, May 24, 1979 "'When we made Headquarters, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven,' says Tork. 'My whole goal had been to be a member of a band that worked. The next thing I know we're making a movie and it doesn't have anything to do with the business of being in a band together.' [...] 'There's some weight behind the idea that Bob and Bert wanted to wreck the Monkees, to stop it cold in its tracks,' says Tork. 'I've never known for sure. Bert and Bob might have thought out loud: "Let's kill the Monkees!" Or they may have not thought so out loud but at some unconscious level, they were sick of the Monkees and wanted to do something else.' [...] 'It was a joy seeing a movie being made, but I didn't like working for Bob Rafelson,' Tork says. 'I did what he told me, but I can't say that I ever had any heart connection with him.' His favorite scene, in which he recounts what he has learned from an Indian mystic, was actually directed by Nicholson. [...] Tork has seen Head around 80 times but it took him years to work out why it bothered him so much. In the movie, the Monkees are hoodwinked, bamboozled, chased, assaulted, mocked, trapped in a black box and reduced to dandruff in the hair of actor Victor Mature, before ending up back where they started. In the words of the sardonic Nicholson-penned theme tune, 'So make your choice and we'll rejoice/ In never being free.' 'Most people are dazzled by the psychedelia, and that's fine, but for me finally the point of the movie is the Monkees never get out,' Tork says sadly. 'Which is to say Bob Rafelson's view of life is you never get out of the black box you're in. There's no escape.' So how would a Peter Tork cut of Head end? 'There might have been a scene where we get out,' he says wistfully. 'We jump in the water and get away.'" - The Guardian, April 28, 2011

The music is the movie
I’ve read various accounts of how closely “A Complete Unknown” - the new Bob Dylan biopic I watched a few nights ago - sticks to the facts.
As with every other biopic, the Dylan movie no doubt includes some sugar-coating - in both commission and omission - for dramatic effect, etc. Those moments are fairly obvious.
But who cares? It’s all about the music. In fact, I would argue that the music is the movie. Plot? Narrative? Mere hooks on which to hang the songs.
The movie had me singing like a madman. It got me back at my six-string, banging out all that three-cord truth from the mind of a true musical genius.
I had a blast.
