Bookshop & Bonedust

5/5
This post is for entertainment, I’m not being paid.
I wanted to take my time with this book, I loved Legends and Lattes. When I found out there was a 2nd book I was over the moon. This book is a prequel sequel with a younger Viv. Travis Baldree has once again made a wonderful story and I pray that there will be more in the series.
When I first started read the book, I was surprised (but not really) when I saw how brash Viv at the beginning of the story, but due to her brashness she is benched from her adventuring party till she is healed. The leader of the group Rackam’s Ravens, Rackam drops Viv off in the town of Murk on their way to take care of the target they are after.
Now Viv is not happy with this, she wants to fight, it’s what she is good at, her main problem is how is she going to fight off the boredom till Rackam and the group comes back through. This is where Viv finds a little run-down book shop where we meet the owner of the shop Fern and her pet Potroast (Potroast is a gryphet) while Fern is a rattkin (Fern has a lot of moxie when we first met her).
Viv got talked into reading a book, much like first time readers who didn’t really think much about reading, Viv didn’t think too much, but since she can’t fight she figure to try something new to stave off the boredom, but Fern introduced Viv to magic (not the spell guiding bolt kind of magic, more like when a friend recommends a book to another friend and the friend is instant fan after reading it) , Fern picked out a book just for Viv (getting a read on Viv she knew she would like a book about epic battles and action).
Viv finished it within a few days (she was also dealing with her injury) and came back for another book. Throughout the course of the story, we learn that the bookshop is not doing well that its surviving on maps and charts for sailors, the building is a mess, so Viv decided to kill more time here she is helping Fern get this place back up on its feet.
Viv is also dealing with other issues; at the inn she is staying at she runs into a would-be adventurer, Gallina, that wants Viv to put in a good word for her. Granted I think Viv did overreact when she wasn’t willing to give the adventurer what she wanted, but taking a step back I do think that the adventurer should have thought this more carefully (she just met Viv. Viv had explained that she is new to Rackam’s Ravens so her recommendation might not be worth anything. Viv doesn’t know how well this adventurer fights) so needless to say the adventurer reacted very poorly.
Now, I went back and reread the prologue of Legends and Lattes and saw Galina was part of the crew that Viv left to start her coffee shop. I like the idea of meeting characters for the first time, like how the adventuring party comes together, but boy Galina needed to get her facts before she started putting all her eggs into one basket. I thought the way she handled Viv turning her down for the recommendation into the group, she needed to relax a bit.

This advertisement is for Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree, a high fantasy adventure of first love and secondhand books set prior to the events of New York Times bestseller Legends & Lattes.
The art featured in this image is by Samantha Petrie.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going super great. When she suffers a dread injury during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, the Ravens pack her off for some obligatory and undesired R&R.
The sleepy beach town of Murk is relaxing, but so far from anything resembling excitement or action that she worries she’ll never get back in the game. But then this down-on-her-luck soldier of fortune starts whiling away her many free hours at a beleaguered bookshop and in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor.
We don’t always know what we need, or which small choices change the paths of our lives.
And adventure isn’t so far from Murk as Viv thinks! A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons would like a word.

What happens when an elite warrior becomes the boon companion to a group of peaceful oddballs and begins to develop skills that have nothing to do with combat? Along the way to finding an answer, the hardened warriors in these stories find purpose, connection, and even love.
My latest SFF book review column for the Washington Post looks at System Collapse by Martha Wells, Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree, and A River of Golden Bones by AK Mulford (paywall-free link)

I mean, I haven’t exactly made *progress* with this TBR, and I’ve definitely bought more books than I’ve read recently…but how amazing does it look 😍

This week's recs are from the local library, and they all share a certain magical vibe. Also, I love how all of these are queer except for The Book of Magic, and only one has the sticker.🤣

Really looking forward to reading these! My partner is a high fantasy reader so I'll probably end up knowing the stories for these second hand if my partner gets to them before me. That's not a problem though, I'll forget the story 72 hrs anyway and I won't feel guilty about not reading them immediately lol.
