The Science of Discovering the Past: Archaeoastronomy
Tumblr media
By Girtompir - Own work, CC0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=57252822
The stars have long been part of the human experience, with the night sky being a more vital part of life before the development of modern cities with their lights washing out a majority of the stars. Most cultures had a deep connection with the sky, recording their observations in stories and in their art and writings.

Archaeoastronomy is an interdisicplinary study of how people 'have understood the phenomena in the sky, how they used these phenomena and what role the sky played in their cultures'. It involves ethnoastronomy, the 'anthropological study of sky watching in contemporary societies' as well as historical astronomy, which focuses on the astronomical records of the past. Unlike modern astronomy, which focuses on observations of the sky and scientific explanations of those observations, archaeoastronomy takes in account the cultural meanings of those observations.

Archaeoastronomy began with noting the astronomical orientation of ruins, including megalithic sites like Stonehenge, in the 17th and 18th centuries, though the term wasn't coined until 1973 by Elizabeth Chesley Baity. It wasn't until the 1960s that systemic work began by studying megalithic sites in the British Isles. Engineer Alexander Thom and astronomer Gerald Hawkins proposed that Stonehenge was an astronomical computer. While Hawkins' theory was dismissed, Thom performed a survey of megalithic sites in the British Isles. Euan MacKie sought to test Thom's theory by excavating the site of a standing stone at Kintraw in Argyllshire from 1970-1971 to verify if Thom's prediction that the site accurately showed the winter solstice. He found an observation platform on the hill above the stone that proved Thom's prediction correct. Because of this vindication, MacKie checked other sites to verify their alignments before broadly accepting Thom's conclusions.

Archaeoastronomy was used by anthropologists studying Amerindian civilization. This was different to the study of Neolithic structures in the British Isles in that there were sources about the prehistory, such as the records of colonizers, that were unavailable for British early civilizations. This allows more certain claims that possible in the Old World.

In 1981, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) released two volumes on the proceedings from the conference that sought to bring researchers together and encourage the move to interdisciplinary approaches, combining the contextuality of archaeological studies with astronomical studies, seeking to understand the why behind ancient people's fascination with the night sky.

There are many ways to do archaeoastronomy, but the two many methodologies are known as 'green archaeoastronomy' and 'brown archaeoastronomy'. Green archaeoastronomy is used where social evidence is relatively scant and relies more on statistical studies. The methods are similar to those developed and used by Thom. Many of these studies are based on the horizon rather than the full sky since that is the easiest part of the sky to align with archaeological sites. Brown archaeoastronomy is close to the history of astronomy or cultural history as it relies on records, both ethnographic records as well as the records of early astronomers with their calendars and rituals. This is the system used to study sites like Chichen Itza in Mexico, where researchers looked at records to find out what the Maya found important in the night sky and then looking at how the sites on the ground aligned to that. They were able to find in the writings that Maya held Venus in high regard, recording the risings and settings of it. They were able to find structures in Chichen Itza that aligned to these points on the horizon. Both have criticisms, with green archaeoastronomy being criticized for lacking social context and failing to answer the question 'why' people in the past built the structures they did and brown archaeoastronomy being criticized for lacking statistical and methodological rigor because each site is studied differently based on the documentation and evidence that has been found relating to the site.

European X-ray laser explores a poorly understood state of matter
The properties of warm dense matter have until recently been little known. Now, thanks to the use of X-ray lasers, physicists are gaining more and more information about this important but still mysterious state of matter. The first comprehensive observations of ionisation processes in warm dense matter, carried out at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL), have just been presented in one of the most prestigious physics journals.
State of matter with a temperature of a few thousand degrees and a high density, close to that of a solid, can be found, among others, in the interiors of brown dwarfs or gaseous planets. Although common in the Universe, it is very difficult to be produced and analysed in the laboratory. A new era in experimental research of this so-called warm dense matter (WDM) state began just a dozen years ago, when physicists launched the first free-electron X-ray lasers. At the forefront of this type of device is the nearly 3.5 km-long European XFEL laser. A series of experiments recently carried out there made it possible to observe for the first time how quickly a metal transforms into the exotic state of ionised WDM to become transparent (non-absorbing) to X-rays at the end of the process. The achievement of the international team of scientists – including those from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) in Cracow – is discussed in a paper published in the journal Nature Physics.
X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs) are used to generate high-intensity X-ray pulses lasting single femtoseconds, i.e. millionths of a billionth of a second. These can be used to study the structure of matter at atomic length scales and to track phenomena on extremely short time scales. One of only a dozen such devices in the world is the European XFEL in Hamburg, built in cooperation with the DESY research centre.
“In our experiment at the European XFEL, we illuminated copper samples with X-ray pulses lasting 15 femtoseconds, using different, gradually increasing intensities”, Prof. Beata Ziaja-Motyka (IFJ PAN, DESY) introduces the experiment. The first author of the paper in question, Dr. Laurent Mercadier from the European XFEL, adds some physical details: “When a single X-ray laser pulse reached the material, it caused strong ionisation. The electrons released in the process were characterised by high temperatures. Under these extreme conditions, the copper was transformed into a state of warm dense matter. We meticulously recorded how much radiation passed through the matter and from this inferred the ionisation changes in the observed system.”
Simulations carried out using the BOLTZMANN SOLVER software, developed since 2004 at DESY by Prof. Ziaja-Motyka, were particularly helpful in interpreting the measurement results. This tool was used to simulate changes in the electronic occupancy of individual energy levels in WDM depending on the intensity of the incident laser radiation.
By confronting experimental data with simulations, it was established that when the X-ray intensity becomes sufficiently high, atoms of WDM become strongly ionised. As a result of this phenomenon, new energy levels appear which can be occupied by excited electrons – making WDM opaque for photons resonant with transitions to these new energy levels. These states had already been observed previously with optical lasers, however, the lasers’ energy limitations did not allow them to be studied in more detail. Now, thanks to the European X-ray laser XFEL, it is possible to characterise them accurately also in response to various intensities of X-ray pulses. In accordance with theoretical predictions for X-ray absorption spectra, prepared by Dr. Joshua Kas (University of Washington, USA) and Dr. Andrei Benediktovitch (DESY, Hamburg), it was further observed that with increasing the laser intensity the warm dense matter becomes first opaque and then – at highest intensities – transparent to the laser pulse.
“The appearance of ‘transparency’ – i.e. lack of absorption – in WDM is a consequence of the high ionisation of WDM atoms occurring at sufficiently high X-ray pulse intensities. The energy of the X-ray photons available in the experiment then becomes too small to excite further electrons. As a result, these photons cannot be absorbed by the warm dense matter at all,” explains Prof. Ziaja-Motyka.
Knowledge of the properties of warm dense matter and the processes taking place within it is not only of astrophysical, but also of practical, engineering importance. Matter in this state plays an important role in certain types of controlled nuclear fusion (ICF – Inertial Confinement Fusion), and also appears during the ablation of metallic heat shields of spacecraft returning from orbit to Earth.
The team of physicists at the European X-ray XFEL laser, led by Prof. Nina Rohringer (DESY, Universität Hamburg), intends to continue research into the electron and ionisation processes occurring in WDM and their dynamics. On the Polish side, the work is co-financed by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

---------------------------------------- >>Terminal Connected - Welcome to the Omninet<< ----------------------------------------
<Corpseflower> “..It's boring just waiting around here while the other members of BTMC are on missions. As such, I will be orchestrating a small activity so as to further introduce myself to the omninet and its members."
<Corpseflower> "According to the research I have done of Old Cradle in my search to better understand humankind, there is a phenomena known as a 'reveal', in which an individual who usually hid behind the anonymity of a wide spread data network revealed an aspect of their body."
<Corpseflower> "I find this to be a rather sufficient interaction for the moment, as there was been much debate several weeks ago surrounding moth people and flash clones."
<Corpseflower> "I of course, am only one of those two things, but my point stands nonetheless. As such, I have taken an appropriate photo of myself, so as to post to this channel of the omninet. Observing the reactions of my colleagues and the several people they have interacted with on this account should be thoroughly entertaining."
“Black Torrent Mercenary Company, signing off.”
---------------------------------------- >>Omninet Connection Terminated<< ----------------------------------------
[Included alongside the message is a photograph. In it, a taller woman can be seen, standing in what can be presumed to be her cabin aboard the BTMC "Stormpierce." She has dusky brown skin, with flowing hair of a stark, almost translucent white, making for a rather striking contrast. Her limbs are covered in what seems to be scales; smooth, yet rough at the same time. They are a pale, opalescent white, with patches of lime green in a regular pattern along her limbs. Her legs are digitigrade, with 'paws' that can only be described as draconic, with a tail of matching nature. White, bony, ridged horns rise from just beneath her hairline, curling back slightly before swooping upwards. Currently, she is wearing in a comfortable pair of what seems to be grey sweatpants and a tanktop.]

The Stardust Conspiracy
Sulvian
---
Sulvian stood on the edge of the city, where the last rays of the setting sun painted the horizon with hues of orange and pink. The cool evening breeze stirred his light brown hair, but he didn’t seem to notice. His amber eyes, sharp and calculating, were focused on the skyline, as though trying to measure the distance between the world before him and the world inside his mind. Everything about him radiated practicality—nothing was excessive, nothing was unneeded. He dressed simply, but with precision. A white shirt with the sleeves rolled up just enough to reveal the sharp lines of his forearms, dark trousers that fit perfectly, and a pair of worn but dependable boots. His appearance was unremarkable in the way that only the most grounded individuals could manage, but there was a quiet power in his simplicity.
His face was smooth, with sharp angles—his jawline defined but softened by the faintest trace of stubble. His light brown hair, always slightly messy, refused to cooperate with any attempt at neatness, falling in casual waves around his face. Despite his often impassive expression, there was something magnetic about the way his amber eyes locked onto anything that piqued his interest. His gaze was unflinching, and anyone who crossed paths with him would feel the weight of that gaze like a quiet, intense pressure. His eyes weren’t just warm—they were watchful, always calculating, always measuring, always analyzing.
Sulvian was a man who prized logic above all else. He was a student of reality, a lover of facts, and a skeptic to his core. Where others saw wonder and magic, Sulvian saw only explanation. He couldn’t abide the mystical or the unknown; he needed to see, touch, and understand the world with his own two hands. Myths, stories, and legends meant nothing to him. To Sulvian, magic was just another illusion, a trick of the light, or perhaps the mind. He was a man of science, a man who preferred structure over chaos, who found comfort in the predictability of the world around him.
He wasn’t a stranger to pain, either. While he had never made his personal history public, his demeanor hinted at it. There was an edge to him, a quiet bitterness that surfaced in moments when he was alone with his thoughts. He often worked late into the night, pouring over notes, testing theories, seeking evidence in the world to ground his beliefs. That’s how he dealt with the darkness in his mind—by staying busy, by proving that the world worked according to order, not randomness. The stars, the universe—they were not entities of magic. They were scientific phenomena to be observed and understood.
Sulvian had built his life on control. Control over his emotions, control over his environment, and control over his mind. Anything outside of that control was an anomaly, something to be fixed or ignored. He had learned to bury his feelings long ago. Emotions were messy, unreliable, and inconvenient. And so, he kept them hidden, even from those who might care to see beneath the surface. He had no time for things he couldn’t measure, for things he couldn’t see and touch. He didn’t have the luxury of believing in things like fate or destiny, not when the world itself was full of tangible challenges to overcome.
But despite his staunch beliefs, there was something about Zarekai that unsettled him, that tugged at the edges of his mind. Zarekai was everything Sulvian wasn’t—wild, chaotic, a dreamer with a heart tied to the stars. The first time they had met, Zarekai had been in the middle of an impassioned speech about the magic of the universe, his voice filled with awe and wonder. Sulvian, ever the skeptic, had shot him down without hesitation, pointing out the scientific explanation for everything he claimed. And yet, Zarekai hadn’t faltered. He’d simply smiled, a knowing glint in his eyes, and walked away as if the exchange had been nothing more than a gentle nudge in a game he already understood.
It irritated Sulvian at first. How could anyone be so convinced of something they couldn’t prove? How could someone build their entire identity around something so intangible as magic? And yet, over time, he had found himself drawn to that same unshakable conviction in Zarekai’s eyes. There was something magnetic about the way Zarekai believed in the impossible. Something that made Sulvian question whether he, too, had been living his life too strictly, too confined to the walls of reason. But no, Sulvian refused to entertain the thought. He was not a fool. There was no room for magic in his world, no place for dreams or illusions.
Still, the more he watched Zarekai, the more the lines between science and something deeper began to blur. Zarekai would talk about stars like they were old friends, tracing their paths across the night sky with his hands, speaking of constellations as if they were alive with stories. To Zarekai, the stars weren’t just balls of burning gas; they were whispers of the universe, guiding forces that shaped everything around them. And Sulvian had to admit, there was a certain allure to it. A part of him, the part he kept hidden from the world, wanted to believe in it too—wanted to believe in something bigger than the science he clung to.
But belief wasn’t enough. Sulvian needed proof. And Zarekai was the proof that nothing in his world was as simple as it seemed.

Bewitching Night Rave: Return to Night [MR]
Xiaoxi Qiang (OC) X Vyn Richter [Special Edition: Halloween!]
Tags: very small mentions of blood, fluff?, so this was supposed to be spicy spice but I truly do not think it turned out that way, maybe a little bit suggestive, mostly SFW
Tumblr media
Xiaoxi loves the color red. The color of her favorites: roses in full bloom, the color of fresh strawberries, and even the apples she’d picked yesterday. Namely, right now, red is also the color of the sky. She’s not sure what to compare the sky to, she’s definitely never seen anything like it.  She’s never seen an eclipse before, much less one like this. The sky looks like it’s been dipped in crimson.
She sits on the cushion of the window seat, her feet dangling aimlessly off the edge as she observes the phenomena of the lunar eclipse. It only did happen annually, after all, or so she’s read. She should treasure every moment of it, even if it means staying awake until it inevitably ends.
Suddenly, the sound of glass shattering brings her attention away from the conditions outside and to behind her, instead. How had she forgotten she wasn’t alone here? Vyn was staring at his now bloodied hand, glass beneath his feet. Just what had he been holding, he’s never that clumsy.
“Are you okay?” Xiaoxi asked immediately, her brown eyes reflecting nothing but genuine concern. “Y-You’re hurt!”
“I am fine.” Vyn murmurs, his voice shaky, his gaze still dropped to his hand. “Did I scare you..?”
Xiaoxi gets up from where she was sitting by the window, quickly hopping off the window seat and closer to Vyn. She drops her gaze down to the blood on his hand, then starts fumbling towards the door. She was wracking her brain on what she could do to make it better. “Are you...do you want me to get something? I think I could find something, there’s some-”
Vyn grasps her sleeve in his unbloodied hand, breathing hard, his gaze torn between looking at her and the empty space next to her. His gaze finally settles on her own, His voice cuts through her thoughts and abandons all of her wishes to scurry out of the room.
“Do not go, please.”
He was..asking her to stay, right?
She didn’t have it in her to go now. She turns her body towards Vyn again. “Are you sure you’re okay, honey? You seem kind of..out of it.”
“We are unusually weak in the case of an eclipse.”
“Can I help at all?”
“Sorry, coming close to you will…it would make me lose control.” With a shaky inhale, he looked down at his hand and then back at her. Namely, the slightly exposed skin of her neck. It looks like Vyn is fighting himself on something. Uncertainty and indecision flashes in his golden eyes, yet he doesn’t look away from her. Behind all of it, there was such an intense sense of yearning and adoration.“But more than that, I really cannot stand to part from you.”
Xiaoxi looks at him and places her hand on his upper arm gently. Her touch is all he’s ever known her to be: warm and welcoming. It only takes him a moment to melt into it, a ghost of a smile gracing his features, despite his current condition.
“Vyn, please, let me,” Xiaoxi says firmly, though he asked her to not go, she also knew he might not let himself take what he needed. She might’ve understood under different circumstances, maybe she would not have pushed it, but the simple fact of it was that they’ve been in the situation before. They had an agreement of sorts, she would give him some of her blood occasionally whenever he got in such a state, or on the very rare occasion he asked. Seeing him so weak, so much not like himself, it broke her heart into a million pieces. There had to be something she could do, and she knew what that “something” was.
It took much of her stubbornness for them to start this arrangement in the first place. His insistence on not hurting her knew no bounds, even at the extent of his own wellbeing. While she was really appreciative of his care for her, she wished he was a little more selfish and thought of himself more.
“I..” Vyn looked at her and it felt like he was finally seeing her, his eyes still looked dazed. He uses the hand he had on the end of her sleeve, still,  and pushes her sleeve up to reveal her forearm. Freckled and smooth in the candlelight, save for a few faded scars. He definitely felt guilty he was about to contribute to them, she could see it in his eyes. But like clockwork, his mouth latches onto her wrist followed by the sharp sting of his fangs.
She was satisfied that she was finally able to get him to cave, in such a pivotal moment of need for him. But in the blink of an eye he pulled away, he was so sure not to leave any blood dripping down her arm.
But just as quickly as his fangs sunk into her skin, they were gone just as quickly. Actually, he didn’t linger nearly as long as usually might have.
“Okay, just until here,” Vyn states breathlessly, crimson still lingering on his lips. His hot breath kissed the sensitive skin of her wrist. “Let’s wrap things up for now.”
His chest heaved as he struggled to meet her eyes again, there was no way that was enough, right? He usually lingered much longer savoring it for at least a little longer. Besides, tonight most likely, he would need more than usual to regain his energy.
Xiaoxi doesn’t let him go far enough to even find bandages, her hand grabs his. Her touch was often gentle, so much so it was easy enough to shake off with the flick of the wrist. But when Vyn didn’t even seem much better after a little bit of her blood, how could she just let him go? It was her duty, as his lover, to make sure he is well looked after. Just as he does for her. She keeps her grip firm.
“Don’t stop, you don’t have to stop, Vyn.”
“Don’t stop..?” Vyn looked at her incredulously, his eyebrows raised with a hitch of his breath. “You want me to continue..?”
Xiaoxi nods, her gaze unwavering, there was no way she was backing down. Not this time at least. She inches forward slightly, as if it might sway him just a little bit.
“But..I am afraid I will break you.” With a weak chuckle his gaze meets her fierce one. Brown eyes looked back at him with an expression he was powerless to argue with.
“Like I’ve said before, I want to do this. I want to see you feeling better more than anything.”Her hand squeezes his warmly, trying to give him encouragement."  Besides, I know you’ll take good care of me. It’ll be okay.” .
“It is fine? Well, all right then.” A smile pulls at his lips, pulling her closer to him with their entangled hands. She lands in his lap with a soft thud, joining him on the soft mattress. Using one of their joined hands to keep her close, he uses his other hand to move her hair away from her neck quickly. Her black curls fall onto her other shoulder messily.
Xiaoxi fully expected him to just sink his teeth into the flesh of her neck, but she was pleasantly surprised when he pressed his face into the crook of her neck, taking in her scent.
“You smell so nice, so sweet,” he said, before pressing a chaste kiss to the skin of neck, which by now was warm to the touch. He trailed gentle kisses in a line from her shoulder and then back up before he settled back into her neck. A dark smile crossed his face. “Are you embarrassed, love?”
“N-No,” Xiaoxi fibbed, albeit breathlessly. Of course, it was a bold faced lie. Anyone would be able to tell by the bright hue of her cheeks and the not so subtle lift to her voice. And of course, this was Vyn. Of course he could see through her.
With a sly chuckle, he grazed his fangs against the skin of her neck, eliciting a sharp gasp from Xiaoxi. She threw one of her arms around his neck as his fangs finally sunk into her skin. Her eyes fluttered closed and sigh upon sigh brushed past her lips, tickling Vyn’s hair.
“Vyn, I was wondering,” Xiaoxi asked, gazing at him with curious yet bashful eyes. “What does it taste like? I can’t imagine it’s very, well, y’know-.”
“You taste so sweet, my dear, so intoxicating.” Vyn breathes against her skin, pressing a kiss to the mark he just left on her neck. Then he leaves one more before brushing his fingertips over the mark gently. It was as if his touch alone chased away any of the lingering pain that was left behind, which was probably his plan all along. “I mean, we are talking about you, after all.”
Moving her arm from around her neck, she buried her hand into his silver hair, an absolutely dazed grin on her face. She trails her hand to his cheek, smiling wider when his eyes meet her brown ones, affection sparkling behind them.
“Are you alright?” Vyn asks, his fingertips moved from the mark on her neck to the apple of her check, caressing her skin carefully, his touch featherlight and cautious.
“Yeah, I’m okay. See, no harm done!” Xiaoxi smiled and leaned her cheek into the palm of his hand. “You can keep going, I think I could handle a little bit more.”
“Maybe, but why don’t you take a rest, love?” His thumb brushes up to her cheekbone, his smile was sweet, comforting. His other hand entangled his fingers with hers, thumb brushing alone the back of her hand. “We have all night, after all.”

Understanding The Concept Of Evil Eye And It's Color
The belief in the evil eye manifests in various forms across cultures, the symbolism of color adds another layer of complexity to its interpretation. The true meaning of the evil eye has to do with protecting against negative thoughts. An envious glare could result from any offensive emotion, including anger, envy, disgust, mistrust, and desire for vengeance. Consequently, the evil eye, in all its hues, serves as a charm to elude this venomous gaze from you.  The ancient superstition suggests that a malevolent gaze, fueled by envy or jealousy, has the power to inflict harm or misfortune upon its target. But what exactly does the Evil Eye mean, and what importance do its different colors hold? Come along on this fascinating journey through superstitions, folklore, and cultural beliefs as we solve the mysteries of our surroundings.
The Evil Eye: A Universal Belief:
The belief in the evil eye is deeply ingrained in human history, spanning continents and civilizations. Common to these beliefs is the idea that a malevolent glance can bring about calamity, illness, or misfortune to the recipient, often attributed to feelings of envy or jealousy harbored by the observer. This pervasive belief underscores the power of perception and the fear of unseen forces lurking in the shadows.
Tumblr media
The Symbolism of Color:
Colors hold symbolic significance in many cultures, representing emotions, virtues, and even supernatural phenomena. In the context of the evil eye, different colors carry unique connotations and serve as protective talismans against its malevolent influence.
BLUE EVIL EYE: Often associated with calmness and protection, the color blue is a prevalent choice for evil eye talismans in many cultures. Its serene hue is believed to deflect negative energy and ward off the envious gaze. It gives the wearer peace and tranquility by reflecting the power of the sea and the sky. It is an effective talisman that boards off jealousy, negative energy, and evil intention.
GREEN EVIL EYE: Symbolizing growth, renewal, and prosperity, green is another color frequently linked to the evil eye. It embodies the vitality of life and serves as a shield against jealousy and covetous intentions.
RED EVIL EYE: With its bold and vibrant appearance, red symbolizes strength, passion, and vitality. In the context of the evil eye, red wards off malevolent forces and serves as a beacon of resilience and protection.
PURPLE EVIL EYE: Long associated with royalty and spirituality, purple conveys a sense of mystique and reverence. As a color linked to wisdom and enlightenment, purple talismans offer spiritual fortitude against the evil eye's influence.
GOLD EVIL EYE: Radiating warmth and opulence, gold represents wealth, abundance, and prosperity. Gold-infused evil eye charms embody divine protection and attract positive energy, deflecting envy and ill will.
BLACK EVIL EYE: While often associated with darkness and mystery, black also symbolizes strength, resilience, and protection. Black evil eye talismans serve as a barrier against negativity, absorbing and dispelling harmful energy.
YELLOW EVIL EYE: Yellow is associated with feelings of happiness, optimism, and positivity.  The yellow evil eye inspires people to see the good in everything by displaying optimism and hope.
WHITE EVIL EYE: The celestial barrier, discernment, and holiness are symbolized by the white evil eye. It is thought to protect the wearer from spiritual harm and negative energy.
ORANGE EVIL EYE: Orange has a link with creativity and vibrancy in the evil eye color interpretation. It is known to bring creativity and hope into depressing situations, much like a spark in a delicate relationship.
PINK EVIL EYE: The pink evil eye has relationships with love and friendship.  The meanings of the pink evil eye in various cultures include relationship protection, bringing comfort and satisfaction, and fostering peace.
BROWN EVIL EYE: The evil eye symbolism of brown conveys warmth and safety. The symbolic meaning of the color wicked eye connects you to nature.
