Eating to Extinction credits Bruce Pascoe as an Aboriginal writer and farmer for introducing him to Murnong. (Correct your errs, Dan Saladino)
In actuality, he is evidently white - as per his ancestry, ie. all four of his grandparents were English. Yet he goes so far in his claim to aboriginal identity that he wrote an award winning booking on indigenous history and practices and operates a huge farm and company selling indigenous produce that he refers to in said book.

If you want to learn more about indigenous food culture, ie. more sustainable and nutritious eating -- look to actually indigenous people. That requires some work, but here's one example: Karlos Baca, an Indigenous Foods Activist from the Southern Ute Nation
https://www.instagram.com/tasteofn8vcuisine/?hl=en
Tumblr media
Karlos Baca, formerly a chef, and now a teacher says his students travel from places where there are more gas stations than grocery stores.
"'Here I'm teaching them how to survive the American food system.' Baca is on the front line of a food war, one being waged against indigenous people. The way he sees it, the first casualty is health. 'That's why we need to decolonise our diets,' he says."
"During the class, he took a handful of blue maize flour and mixed in some water, turning the grey-white powder into a deep purple porridge. To this, he added a pinch of burnt wood ash that made the colour of the maize more intense. With a small blade, he sliced tiny slivers from what looked like a gnarled and blackened piece of wood. 'I can tell you my life story through this one bowl,' Baca said, 'and this food can also show you what happened to my people.'"

In very recent times the campaign to recognise same-sex marriage was supported by many churches, and was not seen as heresy by enough Christians to prevent it passing through the parliaments of many European countries and their colonies.

"If we look at the evidence presented to us by the explorers, and explain to our children that Aboriginal people did build houses, did build dams, did sow, irrigate, and till the land, did alter the course of rivers, did sew their clothes, and did construct a system of pan-continental government that generated peace and prosperity, it is likely we will admire and love our land all the more. Admiration and love are not sufficient in themselves, but they are the foundation of a more productive interaction with the continent. "Behaving as if the First Peoples were mere wanderers across the soil and knew nothing about how to grow and care for food resources is a piece of managerial pig-headedness."

Wood Engraving Wednesday
RICHARD WAGENER
Today we present three wood engravings by Northern California engraver and fine press publisher Richard Wagener (b. 1944). Wagener has an undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego and a graduate degree from ArtCenter College of Design. He has been engraving wood for over forty years and his work has been in a number of fine press editions, most notably with Peter Koch in Berkeley and the Book Club of California. In 2006 Wagener established his imprint Mixolydian Editions, to publish fine press editions of his own work, and Magnolia Editions, a fine art print studio in Oakland, California, providing artists with technical expertise and access to advanced printmaking tools. His collaboration with David Pascoe of Nawakum Press earned them the 2016 Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design, and Wagener was also awarded the 2016 Oscar Lewis Award for contributions to the book arts.
The prints shown here are from broadsides included in portfolios of the deluxe editions of Parenthesis. Journal of the Fine Press Book Association. The first, a 2000 engraving entitled Euphorbia halipedicola, was printed at Wagener's Mixolydian Editions in 2015 with Bruce Whiteman's 2002 text Succulent for the portfolio of Parenthesis 29, Autumn 2015. The next two were printed for the portfolio of Parenthesis 24, Autumn 2013: the first, Outlook Juniper (2009) was printed with a text by John Muir at the Havilah Press in Emeryville, California; the next, Koch Peak, with a text by Peter Koch, was printed by Wagener in an edition of 175 copies.
Our run of Parenthesis is another donation from the estate of our dear friend Dennis Bayuzick.

“Some [vengeance], surely, but it has to be more about justice and compassion. If it’s not, we’re as corrupt as our enemies. You had a choice and you chose well, you chose compassion. I said you’d do fine, and you did.”
— Batman (Bruce Wayne) comforts Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) by combatting his perception of failure in the Joker escaping, with the thought of success in saving the captured child through his own compassion, in Azrael: Agent of the Bat Vol 1 #53 (Jun 1999; 1998, DC Comics) by Dennis “Denny” O’Neil (W), Roger Robinson (P), James Pascoe (I), Rob Ro and Alex Bleyaert (C), and Ken Bruzenak (L).

wip ask game
thank you for the tag @chejuu!!
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs. Lol I have so many wips and I am so bad about working on them. This is just going to be a list of my major AUs; couldn't resist adding a little description bc I have very boring titles
Circle of Magic AU: Bruce is Sandry and Dick is Pasco. Um yeah.
Wayne Family Vacation: my no capes wip that I am being very lazy about...next story is supposed to be from Tim's pov which is probs not helping lol
What Remains of Damian Wayne: my Edith Finch AU that made me so sad I had to stop working on it lol
RoyDick pushing daisies AU: Roy Harper is a piemaker. Dick Grayson is dead. That should be the end of the story.
Outsiders Daisy Jones and the Six AU: 20 years ago, the Outsiders played their biggest show. The next day, they broke up, and never spoke about each other again. Until now.
Laura Croft AU: Socialite Dick Grayson is on an exhibition to find the ruins of Nanda Parbat when his ship is wrecked, 5 years after his adoptive father disappeared on the same mission.
A Plague Tale AU: the plague and the inquisition have hit Dick's small French village, and they all seem to be focused on Dick's little brother, who has a peculiar talent with animals
Joydick AFTG AU: Freddie stopped being Exy prodigy Dick Grayson 20 cities and 12 names ago. But when he goes viral with a trick shot, Bruce Wayne might have an offer too good to refuse.
Untitled: Dick dies with his mother, and Bruce gets tangled in a distraught father's quest for vengeance that might just burn Gotham to the ground
Would love to hear if any of these sound interesting! I do kinda need some help to get back into working on them 🫠
No pressure but tagging: @unicorncoalition, @blackbeanbao, @gimmemore14, @youhavelessproof, and @byrdsofthenyte :)

They eat small fungi in the soil and by digging for it they make small cone-shaped divots that act as receptors for rainfall, thus preventing run-off.

So probably people hunted when they burnt, not the reverse, not randomly. A Yolŋu (NT) elder explained,
'Burn grass time' gives us good hunting. It brings animals such as wallabies, kangaroos and turkeys on the fresh new feed of green grasses and plants. But it does not only provide for us but also for animals, birds, reptiles and insects. After the 'burn' you will see hundreds of white cockatoos digging for grass roots . . . If it wasn't burnt they would not be about to penetrate the dense and long speargrass and other grasses for these sources of food.³³

Dark Emu: Aboriginal Australia and the Birth of Agriculture
Dark Emu: Aboriginal Australia and the Birth of Agriculture by Bruce Pascoe is a fascinating contribution to the evolving discovery of the lost histories of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia, opening up new pathways of discussion both in and outside academia. Pascoe, who discovered his Indigenous ancestry in adulthood, crafts a compelling narrative addressing previously unrecognized possible technological and cultural developments of pre-olonial Australia. Drawing from the written testimony and journals of various early white settlers as evidence for his arguments, Pascoe lays down claims that Indigenous peoples in ancient Australia lived in a developed agriculturalist society that cultivated much of the arid continent using methods lost due to the erasing of Indigenous culture. In this book, readers will discover a side to Australia rarely discussed and, until recently, almost completely overlooked.
In this book, readers will discover a side to Australia rarely discussed and, until recently, almost completely overlooked.
Dark Emu boldly contradicts the prevailing academic view of Indigenous Australians as a solely hunter-gatherer-based society prior to the arrival of British colonialism. Pascoe divides his findings into eight chapters, addressing a different area of industry, technology, or custom in each section with accompanying historical illustrations and maps. There is also a handy index and bibliography at the end for referencing. In each of these chapters, Dark Emu takes its readers on a revelatory journey through personal accounts by white colonialists. These accounts describe, for instance, Indigenous people cultivating crop fields, farming fish, and building permanent housing and storage. The second half of the book addresses Aboriginal law, language, and trade customs, as well as the ongoing murky legal status of Indigenous Australian people through to the present day. Pascoe also highlights how some of the traditional crop plants his research identified, along with the rediscovery of agricultural practices, could benefit the farming industry in a post-climate change Australia, giving his research further relevancy for the 21st century.

Last song I listened to: waai waiwai waiwaiwai is on repeat for me rn... imagine me riding around the city all day with that on and you have my workday in a nutshell
Currently reading: dark emu by bruce pascoe... i believe it's not currently thought to be fully accurate but it's an interesting look at precolonial aboriginal life/ways of living. i read a few chapters in one burst and then don't read for like a month, which is how i consume most media tbh
Currently watching: the bear! again, slowly. this is a recurring theme you'll note. riverdale currently on hold but i will return to it once i am done with the bear s2. i like it a lot, prestige workplace dramas are my jam. i find different jobs really interesting...! but it's taught me that i never wanna go back to food service haha
Current obsession: star trek, but you knew that. i'm trying to get obsessed with making my own damn stories, since i'm tabling at a local zine fair soon... but it's hard... but i shall persevere...!
also i continue to be obsessed with heavy machinery. there's some painters working with an xl scissorlift at one of my job sites and i love that bitch <3 hehe
aand i tag. @tenderplanet @bumblingbabooshka @leolaroot @clementine-kesh :3 if u want
