Duchess Satine “The Lawless” (Pre-Battle) Build Summary/WIP

Important notice: For some reason my camera photographs things very warmly. The images you see are actually more cool toned than they appear. I have yet to get a nice camera other than my old iPhone.

Introduction: This costume was first constructed between Late September 2024 and Early March 2025 for MandoMerc and Rebel Legion approval, first worn at Birmingham MegaCon and then reevaluated and upgraded between February-(Ongoing) 2025 for future approval. Materials are a mix of fabric, leather, general sewing supplies, beads, and pre-owned and thrifted items.  I shall review materials individually in each costume piece as needed. The only piece of the costume I did not make myself or heavily modify were the pants.  All patterns were either self-drafted or heavily modified from a preexisting one.

Undertunic (first layer) This layer is a cocktail dress with the indented shape at the bottom, with added embroidery and beading. It has a modified neckline with a fitted bodice composed of six panels sewn together. The piece consists of a hidden side zipper, straps, and a shift-like garment with pthalo coloured silk velvet. The beads are 2-3 mm real freshwater pearls in gunmetal silver, teal, blue, and grey. I got them off of Facebook Marketplace for a fantastic price. The piping is entirely hand sewn and a reflective silver.  To match the cartoon, I made sure to use a couple rows of the larger pearls to get the slight size variation as seen. 

Sleeves The sleeves were made of the same pthalo toned teal velvet, and it is a separate piece from the underdress. They are attached to the decolletage. I used midnight blue cotton to line the insides. The sleeves are where I took a couple liberties. The cartoon shows sleeves with six rows of coloured dots approximately an inch and a half apart, in the same teal/silvery colour as some of the dots along the underdress. I used my larger 4-5 mm freshwater pearls on the sleeves. They are sewn on with double clear thread and handsewn on. I have seen other cosplayers paint their dots on, but I didn't want to do that because I want Satine to look like a duchess in real life with the funding for elaborate costumes. The silver cuffs are made with the same silver satin as my Padme Amidala (AOTC) “Packing Gown” sleeves because it matched the colour, shine, and silver tone as the rest of the silver piping. The fabric was a crepe satin purchased at joanns. I handsewed these cuffs and stuffed them with rolled up extra velvet from the overtunic. The sleeves flare out at the wrists before the cuffs. I did that too. The sleeves have one inseam.

Overtunic The overtunic was perhaps one of the most challenging parts. I had purchased a stretch velvet and in a stupid moment forgot to line the stretch velvet with a non stretch material. Needless to say I learned my lesson and I will not be making that mistake again.  I drafted and used my own pattern using procreate, then used the midnight blue cotton to line the back of the two tunic pieces. I made this to my own height and measurements for the proportional difference (I am not bone skinny like our Duchess lol) and to allow for my constant weight fluctuations not to hinder me from wearing this kit. The piping is again handsewn, and the pieces are whipstitched together to hide the threads from the front. Both tunic pieces I attached to the collar/Sleeve piece.

Pants The pants were an extremely lucky score on a school trip to Slovakia. They were thrifted at a Humana Vintage store. They were the exact same colour and velvet as the over tunic!  They have the flare at the knee as required and are very comfy!

For ppl who want to know how the egg carton is coming along

still under construction, however the island needed something in place now so q!Bad made the mini “egg basket” under spawn. empanada, sunny, ramon, richas, and pomme have all put their pearls there.

it’s a “one click teleports all” system meant to get eggs out of danger, so they can then warp to their safe rooms at home. not meant to be perfect, only temporary, but is immune to most things like the iconic symmetry wand elevator trick! there’s been a sense of relief to have something secure :D

Bad used securitycraft block pockets as a cool feature of the basket’s design, making a small emergency chamber where eggs can pass through to survive damage and escape. he’s been running several more tests since, and got a genius idea which would make the carton & eggs completely invincible. like it’s apparently so overpowered it’d neutralize everything. the plot itself too 💀

his biggest concern though is the minute he makes a move like That, the retaliation response would ofc need to scale with it (as it has done already) and become absolutely bonkers also. he’s worried if something crazy happens they aren’t prepared for, like straight up disabling certain items or throwing them into the middle of a minefield

yeah so Bad *probably* won’t do that idea, but he is making progress!

The egg carton is one central lobby with a much bigger all-tp system branching off into one pod for each egg. he’s continuing to add tricky stuff & some pocket blocks into parts of the design. it’s insane so far, immune to all the important stuff like a whole fortified vault bunker

Things were going slow but steady this year, and then... I discovered In Stars and Time in April... ISaT kicked my love of drawing back into full gear and I've been finding SO much joy in creating again. Very pink and purple, as always :D

It's been years, more like a decade since I constantly drew this much, since it felt this freeing, and since I thought "I wish I had done that other idea too, oh well, there is always next year! I still have things to do, I still want to do so much more!"

Even with a full-time job, arm pain, and all the other things that keep happening. You know how my laptop died on me back in July and I went "fuck it, I have acrylics and canvases, I can and WILL paint all I want"? Yeah, that's the feeling I look for.

build midseason review of sorts:

i’m surprised my favorite this time around is the secondary rider, but i already had a feeling that would happen when he showed up in the first episode all damp and pathetic like a kicked dog trying to run away from the police. his cute determined eyes in the sewer when i’m 100% sure he’s gonna get his ass beat because he’s Just Some Guy in the midst of characters with insane lore (the degree of insanity just exceeded my expectations… jesus christ, sento) yeah i latched on so quick that it’s sickening. it’s been a weird mix of feelings, and i look at sento and ryuga’s hijinks with a vague sense of amusement

the remarkable moments that immediately came to mind: BLACK HAZARD!!! 🤩😭😭 HE’S SO COOL!! it has every other rider/form introduction i’ve seen so far absolutely BEAT (it’s even a liiiitle bit higher than geats ix too lol. geats ix takes top spot if only because he’s got legacy points buffing his rank in my personal chart. i’m attached to the first series i watched). i’m a huge sucker for the dark side trope, along with hero vs. self conflicts (thank you for this ex-aid) so that plot combined with the amazing visuals/directing…i’ll be screaming about that for ages to come.

i’m not following gentoku’s plot as closely for absolutely petty reasons. facial hair is just not my type… he’s kind of just some weird uncle that they have in the corner. he can be evil or have a heel-face turn and i won’t really care. also i feel bad for his dad a lot because his dad is so nice and it must have sucked watching his child slowly transform into a stranger he can barely recognize.

as for kazumin: i like his rider suit a lot (reminds me of lage9, but considering build is an earlier season maybe the inspiration is the opposite direction. i’m really just a huge vram fan so the lazy attitude just feels familiar and i keep seeing lakia in his place lol). i think it’s super mean to kill off all his friends. i’m so serious. 😭 just because the writers needed grease to focus his priorities on his fellow riders they wrote out grease’s BFFS thats sickkk 😭😭

did sento forget his/katsuragi’s mom?? isn’t she in hokuto rn? it’s annexed by seito so how’s that going? no shred of affection or worry no nothing ?? i would’ve assumed she would be heavily relevant to the backstory once the katsuragi twist was revealed, honestly.

i keep wanting to be suspicious of banjo but even i know he’s really just an aggressively honest guy to a fault. i still stand by my comment on him during episode 1. though i just didn’t expect this paragraph to hit me square on the head

one thing i hope would happen before the series ends: if something happens to sento to save the world i hope banjo is there with him lol (i know about the memory thing but if sento’s gonna die i hope banjo dies too 😭 i can’t bear to watch them separated 😭😭 those are my boys)

Y'know Ava lost her wife to the very god she worshiped and when she wanted revenge she died from that very god's hand, had to fight through hordes of demons with a dingy sword to be brought back to life. Once alive again she now has to deal with the guilt of her past because she was not a good person as well as the grief of losing her wife while still seeking revenge having to rely on a god once again begrudgingly and if she fails to get revenge this time the consequences will be more dire.

Diego once a death paladin of katabasis now reduced to bare muscles and flesh doomed to travel the world decaying slowly as punishment, unable to seek revenge, the only satisfaction he gets is going after katabasis's newest paladin. As part of the punishment when he dies so will his soul, no afterlife or anything, he will simply stop existing, there's no remedying this, will anyone remember him?

Ngl if my OCs existed all of a sudden it's over for me, I'd probably say "that's rough buddy" then get brutally murdered like that forest demon from smiling friends-
