The Maniraptoran Alphabet (Part 1)

This past week I researched and illustrated a dinosaur alphabet book! I researched and illustrated 26 maniraptorans for the project, specifically limiting myself to species that went extinct before the Eocene to exclude modern birds. This project was a huge amount of fun for me and I'm very proud of the result, so I hope you all enjoy them too! Please look forward to the rest of the series, which I'll be posting over the course of the coming week or so.

Book 2 au: sparring sessions and short hair katara

They like to have sparring sessions in order to keep their bending skills sharp. They allow themselves to go all out and not hold back at all cause they know if anyone got hurt, Katara could just heal them

To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?

Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.

#in the 16th century canon he starts out as an introverted but sincerely well meaning guy that never quite manages to find his social niche #he was a sensitive kid and when subjected to enough pressure #his insecurity fearfulness and powerlessness mutate into distrust resentment aggression suffocating repression and self-restraint #I don't think he's a bad person in fact he consistently tries very hard to do the right thing #do his job properly avoid letting people down and get through life with a sense of dignity #but he is supposed to come across kind of cold impersonable and difficult to be around if you don't know him personally (and very few do)#people can sense there's something wrong with him and are put off by it #Vatican is a nest of vipers and as the stakes rise he retreats deeper into his coldblooded untouchable work persona #he has no choice but to start lying scheming blackmailing and eliminating his enemies #in order to maintain his position keep Vasco safe their relationship under wraps and his own head above water #essentially playing by the same rules everyone else in the holy see has been playing with for centuries #eventually he loses his spot as the secretary of state and is manipulated/forced to take on a role in the roman inquisition #and if people were sort of iffy about him before being the authority overseeing trials torture excommunications and executions doesn't help #and since he has so few allies and such an infamous reputation he's an easy target for scapegoating whenever necessary #towards the end it dawns on him that he's become the kind of twisted cruel corrupt person he used to fear and despise #and the guilt moral injury and abject self-loathing had largely sapped him of his will to live by the time the final assassin gets him #answered #anonymous #Machete #Vaschete lore #he thought his dream of priesthood would make him a better person more worthy of admiration safety and love but he climbed too high #and got roped up in the dangerous games that take place under god's nose and slowly got strangled to death

#Doodles #UT #Papyrus #Sans #Cutest little lads #I had a good handful of stick figures of them from my 2015/2016 notebook and it really is a cute style #Y'know funny enough now that I think of it lol - Those doodles were also in December!#(I'm tagging these in December still lol hi from the past)#It's that Undertale time of year <3 Apparently I first found it Dec. 17th 2015 hehe #A little late to the party! But not terribly so ♪ And I had managed to avoid spoilers up to that point lol #I do still have some vague memories of watching it for the first time #I watched a Pacifist run first and cried - of course #And then watched a Genocide run soon after and cried even more #I remember being very confused as to what the Fight timing option even was the first time I saw it lol #Since in Pacifist you can go the entire time without even accidentally using it! You can ACT or ITEM instead #It's interesting to think back on such a huge shift in culture on the broadscale #And also a personal milestone :) Something that tipped the scales!#Something that even now I'm grateful for and think of fondly ♥#And it's all still fun to draw! What more could I ask for haha #I think with this super-simple style in particular I like making their designs complement each other #So Papyrus is all stick lines and Sans has thicker bones #Papyrus' eyes are upright and Sans' are laid flat haha #They both have circle heads to start tho! You know, about the digressions in Les Mis:

I know they can be intimidating and I fully admit that I skipped a lot of them on my first read too (basically I gave up when I got to Waterloo and after that I just started skipping pretty much all of them). And to be fair you won't always get much out of them if you don't have the context, which — if you're not familiar with French history — you probably won't.

But what's great is reading them with people in the fandom who have already done the research and can break down their meaning and significance and point out all the fun references and jokes and explain the context!

Because Les Mis is very much a novel with a message, and much of that message is found in the digressions. Also they're just more fun to read when you realise that Hugo was basically blogging about history, current events and politics, and he's a witty and idiosyncratic commentator, whether you agree with him on everything or not.

Les Mis is his blog and Les Mis Letters is giving you the RSS feed equivalent.

Also you will learn so much about French history and the history of Romanticism and the history of sanitation and... a lot of things frankly. It's perfect entertainment for nerds

#les mis letters #also if you only fixate on the plot and the main characters #you're going to miss like at least 80% of the novel #because it's not that kind of novel #it IS about the digressions and the minor characters and the small anecdotes and the setting and the history #the plot is there to serve the story that's about society as a whole #it very much is societal storytelling #not that the main characters aren't important too of course #i just think it's good to manage your expectations to avoid getting frustrated when it turns out to be a very different experience #than what you'd expect

thinking about how mishandled the herb brides are because like. The Text tells us they're not sexual beings (P1 mentions them being virgins, engaged to the Earth, and not to be touched even by their husbands, almost, for a lack of a better word and to conjure an image more than anything, priestess-types) and that their dances are nonsexual and sacred (all all true and correct) WHILE. giving them detailed / 3D modeled nipples. topless. clothes very conveniently torn [in ways that would be unrealistic for actual dancing like in the fucking moshpit]. all pretty thin hairless white-passing blemishless 20-something women. being already sexualized as white-passing asian women, but if they looked more like other NPC models/members of the Kin like the Kayura models (which to me would make more sense because they are never mentioned to be mixed in the way Artemy, an indigenous man who's blonde blue eyes due to being mixed, is [while still very much being indigenous and it being a central part of his story]), it would be even more obvious and would steer even more into Very Blatant fetishization of asian women. and then one asks, are they white-passing because they're sexualized? are they sexualized because they're white-passing? was it an admission of guilt to not make them look like Kayura model, because it would be too obvious then? or is it an admission of lust for women more white-passing? is it about beauty in the eye of the beholder?

then there's bewildering and dehumanizing lore of members of the Kin being non-humans, through the existence of the Worms (literally half-soil), them being a (more or less literal) hivemind, and that being "less human"/closer to the earth (nice_dichotomy_what_lies_outside_of_it png but also... the game touches on that...) immunizes them to the Earth's disease... and yet the Brides look like women... pretty thin hairless white-passing blemishless 20-something women who someone found wise to give 3d modeled nipples to, still good for the ritual cutting... do you hear how i'm going mad yet...

edit to add because while i was so mad and it WAS in my mind i just didn't have the strength to add it when i first wrote:

and they're bought and traded between the odonghs they pair with (again, closer to cattle or things) ... ladies there's so much. there's too much.

''engaged to christ'' in their own way (again only making tangentially similar patterns;#not calling the Brides nuns of course)#so having them be Said to be nonsexual [until they're said to be etc] while being Shown as sexualized it's like. oooh the misery #neigh (blabbers)#disclaimer i'm white & i'm sure Many indigenous women regardless of origins have touched on this in more direct and deeper ways i ever coul #oh there's also the fact that the kin is said in design document to mirror in ways 19th century native americans #and the herb brides going to sexualize themselves in the B.H. ''for outsiders'' (p1 dialogues)#mirrors native american women being pushed in brothels from the crushing roller of colonization stripping them of land #pushing them into poverty and homelessness #in ways that i um. raised eyebrow emoji to say the least. find deeply uncomfortable.

Are you telling me he doesn't randomly buy himself candy just for the dopamine and the child-like joy? That he doesn't indulge on halloween spirit and buy spooky candy just for him and Machete?? (who barely eats it but halloween spirit comes first, practically second)

#I actually thought about that for quite a while before choosing to go with a simple and neutral soda can #because yes I do think Vasco is a little treat kinda guy #but the treats he goes for probably aren't straight up candy #he's into hot chocolate and sweet coffee drinks #ice cream (particularly odd and seasonal flavors)#pastries and desserts probably #I can see him being a nutella enjoyer #and if he buys actual sweets I think he'd go for chocolate bars #(not like mars bars but thin flat sheets of chocolate that you break into smaller pieces)#(do those have a specific name in english or are they both just chocolate bars?)#none of the above are very easy to share unexpectedly with unfamiliar children #like I said in majority of Europe halloween isn't widely/officially celebrated and trick-or-treating isn't customary #families with young children teens and young adults might do halloween activities on smaller scale #but a childless couple in their thirties (and living in an apartment) is unlikely to have halloween candy in reserve methinks #Machete doesn't eat that many sugary things regularly #if Vasco is having something he probably goes along with it #but his health anxiety kind of affects what foods he deems acceptable and which ones should be avoided #which is ironic because modern Machete has a history of stress smoking #as a habit that's quite a bit worse for you than having an occasional ice cream sundae #I think he managed to quit when their relationship turned serious #answered #anonymous #modern au
