soulmate haechan part 2!!
Part One
***
For the next few weeks, you avoid Haechan like the plague. Every time you see him, you purposely head in the opposite direction, especially if he starts to head your way.
On the opposite hand, Haechan could not be more frustrated. Every time he tries to get close to you, or catch you in the hallway of one of the university's buildings, you disappear. He knows he screwed up, big time, and all he wants to do is apologize. Making things right with the one person he cares about most in this world, especially since they're his soulmate, is the most important thing to him right now.
Luckily for him, but unlucky for you, he manages to trap you in one of the quieter hallways of the anthropology department late one evening when there's not too many people around. He may or may not have been studying your schedule and found out you stay late at the library on Wednesday nights to study, and he may or may not have been planning this little intervention for a few days now.
"Move," your voice leaves no room for argument, refusing to even meet his gaze as you continue to stare straight ahead.
"No." He responds, a slight huff escaping him.
For the first time in what feels like months, you meet his gaze, Nothing could have prepared him for the look of complete anger that meets him when he looks into your eyes, but there's also something else. There's a certain sadness that hides behind the facade, and he doesn't quite understand why.
A loud sigh escapes you as you close your eyes, taking a minor step away from him which only causes him to pout. "What do you want?"
"I want to apologize," for once, he's straight forward, and he can tell this catches you by surprise.
"You?" Your eyebrows raise as skepticism coats your voice. "Apologize?"
"Yes," he nods once for emphasis.
"Look, if you're going to give me some half-assed, cocky apology where you say something along the lines of 'I'm sorry I'm better than you', I don't want to hear it." You sigh once more, though this time a little more disappointedly.
"I never once thought I was better than you," he can tell his words catch you by surprise again, so he continues before you can say anything else. "I'm sorry. I truly am. I never wanted things to turn out this way, and I realize I took things too far. This isn't an excuse, but I'm not good with expressing my feelings towards you, so I always panicked and acted out hoping you would notice me. I guess you did, just not in the way I hoped. And when I saw your name on my results sheet, I panicked again. All I knew was how to tease you, so I stuck with that, and I fucked everything up. These past few weeks have been absolute hell not talking to you. So, from the bottom of my heart, I apologize."
Your mouth parts and you blink. Once. Twice. Three times before you manage together your thoughts, and even then they're still jumbled. Finally, you manage to close your agape mouth, pulling your lips into a thin line.
"Please say something," he's begging at this point, and he can hear his heartbeat in his ears due to the anxiety now coursing through his veins at your silence.
Another moment of silence passes before you're speaking.
"I don't know what to say," you admit, face remaining neutral for the most part. So much so, that he cannot get a read on you no matter how hard he tries.
"I know I don't deserve it," he shoves his hands into his pockets to avoid wringing them together from nerves, "but please give me another chance. One more chance to prove to you that I can be better. That I can actually be worthy of you; worthy enough to live up to the title of your soulmate."
You stare at him, thoughts continuing to run through your head. Knowing him for as long as you have, you can never be quite sure if this is another one of his pranks or not. However, from the way he avoids your gaze after you continue to stare at him without saying anything, as well as how he bites his bottom lip nervously tells you that he may not actually be lying this time.
"You're right, you don't deserve it," you can see his shoulders deflate at your words tears threatening to dot his eyes as an undeniable anger builds in his chest. Anger at himself for causing this. Anger that you're not his and that he'll have to work even harder to prove to you that he can be the man you deserve. After all, he won't stop until he's won and he can finally call you his. "However, I'm willing to give you one last chance."
His head shoots up so quickly to meet your eyes you swear you hear a crack. The smile that lights up his face makes him look like a completely new man.
"Thank you," he cannot stop himself from embracing you in his arms, something he's always wanted to do. A chuckle almost escapes him as he feels you melt into his hold, his face buried in the side of your neck, "I promise I won't let you down."

“That profesor of ours is really something huh?” Armin asks.
Mikasa and Eren stand beside him as they walk to their next class.
“I like her, she seems like she really cares about her students.” Eren answers.
“Yeah like...really cares.”
“Anyways, I’ve scheduled a one on one with her since I’m majoring in her field. Mikasa says.
“You can do that?!?”
“Don’t get any ideas Eren.”
“What do you me-”
“We all see the way you stare at her, it’s not a secret you think she’s hot.” Armin explains.
“Who’s hot?” a voice behind them says.
“Jean? Shouldn’t you be at practice?” Armin asks, looking over at Eren questioningly.
“Yes, but I came looking for Eren. We have a game tomorrow and he’s in the starting lineup. You’ll come watch us right Mikasa?”
“Don’t I always come to your games?”
“Yeah but you leave whenever Eren’s off the court.” Jean answers.
Eren gives Mikasa a confused look. Her eyes shift to the floor, refusing to look at either man.
“We’ll all be there Jean. Now, Mikasa and I have another class and Eren you need to get to practice. We’ll see you guys later.” Armin says, wrapping his arm around Mikasa’s wilted form and dragging her down the hallway.

“Levi can you pass me the sodium chloride?”
“No.”
“Please? My hands are full.”
Levi turns and eyes the taller woman who’s carefully holding a burning hot beaker.
“Hurry! This experiment is time sensitive!”
“I’m not even in proper gear Hange. What if it gets on me?”
“It’s salt Levi!!”
Levi hurries over to the counter opposite Hange and picks up the container labeled sodium chloride. She instructs him to pour some into a test tube. He follows her directions and rushes away from the scene, eager to get back to his book and far away from Hange’s latest experiment. As much as Levi hates Hange’s antics, he couldn’t help but feel thankful for having a friend like her.
“So are you coming to the meeting today? I heard they’re introducing a new curriculum.” Hange asks.
“I hate those meetings.”
“Yeah well just because we’re friends with the principle, doesn’t mean either of us can skip out.”
“I wouldn’t skip the meetings if anything actually applied to me. We only ever gather to talk about the science departments. The humanities department is almost always overlooked. It’s not Erwin’s fault, the principal can only do so much.”
“I suppose, but you should still go.”
“I’ll think about it.”
————
You walk into the room, professors and administrative employees mingling around you. You don't seem to recognize anyone, so you take a seat at the back and pull out your phone. You scroll through your emails and notice one from a student with a familiar name.
Hello Professor,
My name is Mikasa Ackerman, we met the other day. As you know, I’m an anthropology major, and I was hoping I could meet with you sometime to discuss matters related to my major and classes and universities you would recommend. Thank you so much.
Mikasa Ackerman.
Mikasa...I recognize that name, but I can’t remember her face...Anyways I’ll respond when I get back home.
“Excuse me, is this seat taken?” A tall woman with glasses asks you.
“No, it’s not.” You respond, giving her a bright smile. You turn your attention back to your phone, reading over a few more administrative emails. She happily sits down in the seat next to you and turns her head to look you over. Your head turns in her direction once again, this time giving her a confused look.
“Um…do you need something ma’am?”
“Huh? Oh no- sorry was I staring?”
You nod sheepishly, a small giggle leaving your lips. Her attention turns to the front of the room and she waves her hands frantically in the direction of another man. Oh it’s the same guy I bumped into.
“Levi!! Over here!! I saved you a seat!”
The man hurries over and slaps a hand onto the woman’s mouth.
“Hange would you quit yelling?!”
“Sorry.” She answers, barely audible due to the hand currently smothering her.
You observe the pair, trying hard not to be caught noticeably staring. Would be weird considering I just called her out for staring at me.
The shorter man takes a seat as a blonde man takes the stage. This is Erwin, the principle of Eldia University, aka, the guy who interviewed you.
“Thank you all for coming today, this meeting will be brief and it will cover the new material for the humanities courses.”
“See Levi, this is why you shouldn’t skip the meetings.” Hange whispers.
“Well this is a first..” Levi responds, pulling out the IPad he uses for work.
“Oh ho ho look who’s getting all excited now.” Hange says, nudging Levi in the shoulder
“Shut up four eyes.”
Your ears perk up as well. You had put in a request for a field trip to the National Museum of Anthropology and were eagerly waiting for a response. You planned on assigning them a report about their time and experience at the museum, rather than have them regurgitate all the information you taught that semester.
“In regards to the anthropology museum trip submitted by Miss y/n, it has been approved.” Erwin says, glancing in your direction.
You smile and bow your head, silently thanking him. Levi follows Erwin’s eyes and finds that you’re the one he’s talking about. So you’re the new anthropology professor, the one Zeke was talking about. Zeke was the head of the humanities department as well as an economics professor. Levi didn’t particularly like him or how much of a flirt he can be with the ladies in their department. He definitely couldn’t understand why the board made Zeke the head of the department and not him, but he knew it wasn’t his place to complain about the decision, and he didn’t want to put Erwin in a bad situation. Both you and Levi listened intently to the words Erwin  spoke and after about half an hour, the meeting was over.
“That’s all for today, thank you everyone. Also, please make our new staff feel welcomed.” Erwin says, ending the meeting. You gather your things and make your way to the door as friendly faces smile in your direction. A tall figure stepping in front of you halts your movements, your eyes landing on a scruffy looking older man. Definitely not my type.
“Hello Miss y/n, I’m Zeke Jaeger head of humanities.” The man says lightly grabbing your hand and placing a kiss on your knuckles. You awkwardly slide your hand out of his grasp and discreetly rub the unwelcomed kiss on your pants.
“Nice to meet you Mr. Jaeger. I should get going. I'm late for an appointment.”
You brush past him and hastily walk to your imaginary appointment. As you reach the door, you feel someone tap you on the shoulder. It better not be him again. You turn and see the woman you were sitting next to earlier and next to her, the man you’ve successfully pissed off twice.
“Hi! you dropped this.” The woman says handing you a notebook.
“Oh..um... that’s not mine.”
“I know, it’s mine, but I needed a reason to talk to you and this was the only thing I could think of.”
You giggle, receiving a bright smile from the woman.
“My name is Hange, Hange Zoe, and I’m a chemistry professor. If I’m being honest, I just wanted to introduce myself so I could ask if you wanted to join us for drinks tonight at 7.” She tilts her head towards the shorter man who sports an award winning scowl.
“This is Levi Ackerman, and he teaches-”
“I can introduce myself Hange, anyways we’ve met before.”
“Oh you have?”
“We haven’t spoken to each other but I have run into him before...literally. So what do you teach Mr. Ackerman?” You respond.
“Philosophy.”
“And he’s damn good at it.” Hange adds.
You smile sweetly at both of them.
“I don’t think I’ll be busy tonight. I’d love to join you for drinks.”
“Wonderful! We’ll see you at 7 then!”
You nod and finally reach the exit. You couldn’t lie, Levi was handsome. You wouldn’t mind getting a little bit closer to him. Anyways it might be helpful for work, since you both work in the same department.
Tonight will be...interesting.

[CN] Shaw’s S2 R&S - What is known as amazing the world
🍒 Warning: This post contains detailed spoilers for a Rumours & Secrets, 所谓一鸣惊人, which has not been released in EN! 🍒
This R&S features S2 Shaw, but no knowledge of S2 is required to enjoy this~
In terms of sequencing, this is Shaw’s third S2 R&S!
[ Chapter One ]
When mentioning the tutor of the Archaeology Department in Loveland University, Professor Shen deserves greatest respect. Precisely because of the high academic requirements, he had not recruited graduate students in recent years. However, he didn't find anything wrong with this. He occasionally taught undergraduates, then immersed himself in his own academic research. His days followed a pretty regular pattern.
During such an ordinary time, Professor Shen met Shaw for the first time.
The day he interviewed Shaw was also the warmest afternoon in the late spring of Loveland City. The sycamore trees on both sides of the road were working hard to produce new buds. Professor Shen carried a pile of materials, walking across the sunny open space to the building where the graduate students were sitting for the second round of examinations.
So far, he had re-examined five students. Their performances were very mediocre, and there was still quite a lot of distance from his expectations. However, the student to be re-examined later was slightly different. The materials showed that he was directly recommended to him by Loveland University. Based on his age, he should be a young student. Amidst the twenty-five, twenty-six, and even older re-examinees, he had subconsciously left an impression on Professor Shen.
After dusting off the sycamore puffs that had fallen on his shoulders, Professor Shen entered the classroom. Before long, what accompanied the hands of the clock reaching 2pm were two beeps at the door of the classroom.
"Hello teacher, my name's Shaw.”
Hearing this, Professor Shen lifted his head. The boy at the door was indeed very young, but his flamboyant bluish purple short hair, incomparably avant-garde clothes, and flat expression without much of a smile rendered Professor Shen stunned for a second or two. But he quickly smoothened his expression, warmly beckoning Shaw to enter.
The student named Shaw wasn’t reserved at all. He sat down naturally on the chair in the middle, placing a black schoolbag casually at his feet.
Whether he was making judgments based on appearances or was no longer holding much hope, at that moment, Professor Shen thought that this was another interview where he would simply go through the motions. He raised some standard questions. Unexpectedly, Shaw actually answered them decently. Professor Shen's spirits gradually rose.
"What you wrote about in your undergraduate thesis was..." Professor Shen flipped through the materials in his hands. Just as he found the information, a clear voice sounded fluently. "《A Statistical Analysis of the Age and Gender of Human Skeletons Unearthed in Xushan》. It includes the basic condition of the unearthed human bones, any damage, pathological changes, as well as an analysis of the population and health of that period.”
"Does this mean you’re interested in physical anthropology?" Professor Shen pushed the glasses on the bridge of his nose, staring at Shaw with interest. "In that case, why did you apply to be my graduate student?" He needed to know that Professor Shen’s research direction was mainly on the appreciation of ancient appliances and field archaeology.
Faced with Professor Shen's sharp and intense gaze, Shaw didn’t panic at all. He shifted his overlapped legs, arching his eyebrows slightly. “Physical anthropology is a field that I wasn’t really familiar with, so I wanted to challenge it to learn more. Teacher's research direction is what I’m truly interested in." After he finished speaking, he added, "By the way, if I have the chance, I’d like to participate in field work a few times."
"Oh? The graduation thesis is such an important aspect. Isn’t challenging a new field very risky?" Professor Shen continued to probe.
Hearing this question, the corners of Shaw’s lips slanted, revealing his first smile of the day. However, there was an incredibly serious look in his eyes. He didn’t give a direct answer, but spoke leisurely, word by word. "Archaeology has always been a risk where expectations may end up fruitless. Don’t you agree?”
The re-examination and what Shaw said greatly exceeded Professor Shen's initial expectations. Outstanding schoolwork, comprehensive knowledge and an open-minded attitude. Except for seeming rather brash and conceited, Professor Shen wasn’t able to find fault with him at that moment. He drew a circle on Shaw's materials, then lifted his head to ask the final question:
"Student Shaw seems to be a young man with a lot of personality. So why did you choose the archaeology major that most people find boring?”
-
[ Chapter Two ]
The new semester has commenced for almost two weeks. For Professor Shen, aside from the need to attend a few more professional courses, his teaching life doesn’t seem to have changed much. He hasn't taken a graduate student in two years, and he hasn't gotten used to it yet. Fortunately, Shaw has never been someone who would simply wait passively.
After class this morning, Professor Shen returns to the office. Right after opening the stack of archaeological reports he’s been reading recently, there’s a sudden knock at the door.
"Shaw, is there a problem?" Professor Shen removes his reading glasses and asks composedly.
Shaw has a black backpack slung over one shoulder. He strides over to Professor Shen's desk. Scratching his own hair casually, he speaks with laziness in his tone. “Professor, you gave too little homework. Can’t you assign more?”
Professor Shen suddenly chuckles. Even though it’s only been two weeks since school started, he has already seen Shaw's agile mind and excellent learning speed. Professor Shen isn’t surprised by Shaw's request. But in his opinion, being overly eager isn’t always a good sign to rely on.
Professor Shen ponders for a moment, puts on his glasses again, then says to Shaw, "There’s another assignment, but I don't know if you’d be willing to do it.”
“Tell me about it?”
“You could draw pictures of the flowerbeds in school and objects in the classroom, then practice your fundamental sketching skills.”
Treating flower beds as ruins and objects as appliances is a method that many archaeology students use when practising sketching. But when this assignment comes out of Professor Shen's mouth...
Shaw sweeps a glance at the genial Professor Shen as he sits behind the desk. He purses his lips. Without a word, he hauls up his backpack and turns around, walking towards the office door. Just as he’s about to leave, he turns slightly with a soft “hmph”.
He doesn’t know if Professor Shen heard this sound, nor does he care that much. After all, he has once again immersed himself in the pile of archaeology reports.
-
Just after 5pm, Professor Shen hurries to a research meeting while carrying documents.
The sky at the end of summer is still very bright, clear and azure, without a single shadow of dusk. Professor Shen turns around a corner, and suddenly finds that the back not too far ahead is very familiar - the bluish-purple hair is one of the few in the whole of Loveland University, and he knows at a glance that it’s Shaw. And in front of Shaw, facing Professor Shen’s direction, is a girl with short hair and dressed in a delicate manner.
Professor Shen walks closer and closer. He’s unable to hear what the girl says, and only sees the shy expression on her face.
“Hey, I’m rushing to the band. You’re in the way.” Shaw’s voice is very cold, and even somewhat impatient. The girl seems a little reluctant to withdraw, and reaches out to grab Shaw. However, Shaw turns sideways and steps backwards, dodging instantly. At this point, Shaw knits his brows tightly, his eyes dyed with a sharp and impatient light. “I’ll repeat myself for the last time. I’m. Not. Interested.”
After saying this with a decisive attitude, Shaw walks away.
Walking from behind Shaw to a different branch of the corridor, Professor Shen grips the documents tightly. Actually, whether a student likes to be in a band or is adored by girls, these things belonging to the private lives of students aren’t what he’s interested in nor what he has ever interfered in. To him, what students place value on most are the quality of learning and professionalism. As for other things...
Professor Shen glances at his watch and subconsciously speeds up his pace. While he hurries, he hopes that his original judgment was correct, and hopes that Shaw is indeed a good successor worth cultivating, just as he appeared during the re-examination.
-
[ Chapter 3 ]
A week passes by suddenly.
Sitting at the desk which receives plentiful sunlight, Professor Shen flips through the stack of sketching assignments that Shaw had just handed in, an imperceptible smile of satisfaction on his lips.
In addition to printed computer drawings, another half are hand-drawn sketches by Shaw using a pen, and they are of pretty good quality. Over the years, Professor Shen had seen too many young kids neglecting hand-drawn sketches because they relied too much on computer drawings. No matter what decade it is, the most primitive and foundational skills should be the most solid.
The sense of gratification causes Professor Shen to sigh. However, the page he just flipped to causes him to stop abruptly - this is obviously not part of the drawing assignment. It looks like an analysis report... Professor Shen props up his glasses, reading it carefully from the beginning. Then, he realises that this is an analysis of archaeological reports. Flipping to the back roughly, he finds that coincidentally, this analysis is targeted at the stack of archaeological reports Professor Shen had been reading recently.
With no time to be surprised, Professor Shen straightens his back in an instant, sits up straight, and reads the analysis written by Shaw from start to finish carefully. Whether it’s the standardised writing format, the hypothesis proposed in response to pictures and existing materials, or the objectivity of the comparisons drawn, they can already be regarded as the standard of a professional.
Even though he doesn’t know where Shaw obtained the archaeological reports, what is undeniable is that he used his "little brain". But what is even more undeniable is that just by skimming through the analysis, Professor Shen can see Shaw’s solid foundational and expansive knowledge.
Through this unassigned piece of homework, Professor Shen feels that what he sees isn’t just a very young student who’s just beginning graduate school. What’s displayed before his eyes is Shaw’s undiscovered potential and possibilities.
Professor Shen gets a full glass of water from the water dispenser, and Biluochun leaves twirl and dance in the transparent glass. He walks over to the window, blowing at the mouth of the cup. Then, he takes a few sips of tea slowly, appearing to be in a good mood.
In his mind, he recalls the content of the analysis report, as well as Shaw's appearance when he came to submit his assignment early in the morning.
At that time, his steps were confident and full of vigour. He walked straight to the table to set down his assignment, then raised his eyebrows in glowing spirits. "Professor, remember to read till the end."
Now that he thinks about it, Professor Shen seems to taste the unhesitating confidence and the unwillingness to admit defeat in Shaw's eyes that he didn’t notice before.
It looks like this kid felt that he was being underestimated before. Full of pent up grievances, he wanted to prove his capabilities! This was simply his slightly awkward yet incomparably confident demeanour...
Professor Shen sighs softly, then can’t help but chuckle.
Before him, the sun is still climbing up at 10am, but the radiance of sunlight is already incomparably dazzling.
-
[ Chapter Four ]
After a few autumn rains, Loveland City gradually turns cooling. Professor Shen's body isn’t very good, so he puts on a thick coat early.
On this day, Professor Shen comes to the office with a briefcase as usual. He methodically prepares Biluochun, takes out his materials and pen, and puts on his glasses. Just as he’s about to start work, the new young lecturer Xiao Fu suddenly turns to his desk while holding his phone. “Professor Shen, look at this quickly. This boy in the middle looks like your graduate student!"
“Why do I feel as if he might be that student of yours?" Teacher Fu looks increasingly certain that he’s correct. "I met him several times before. It’s that cool and triumphant look. Even the colour of his hair matches!"
Professor Shen lowers his head, pulling down his glasses, and the image on the phone screen is displayed in an instant. It seems to be a video of a performance. The musicians on stage are very lively, and the atmosphere under the stage seems to be extraordinarily enthusiastic. The person playing the bass intently and fervently in the middle - who else could he be but Shaw?
Even before Professor Shen speaks, Teacher Fu has already affirmed to himself. “That’s right, it’s him! I remember someone mentioning that he was in band, but I didn't expect him to look like this...”
Professor Shen's eyes are still focused on the phone screen. In the video, Shaw has the youthful vigour that he can only have at his age. He’s full of spirit, rebellious and eccentric, and exudes fervent vitality. He can attract everyone’s attention almost instantly, as though he's a natural focal point.
But such a Shaw seems slightly foreign to Professor Shen. In the past two or three months, the Shaw he has seen is a graduate student who rushes to and from school, but is very earnest in his specialised course, and is also very meticulous in research.
Teacher Fu has already taken his phone away and returned to his own desk. Professor Shen’s gaze returns to his materials, but there are still some emotions stirring in his heart.
The more interactions he has with Shaw, the more Professor thinks that he’s akin to a treasure. Although he may make someone feel conflicted, he always brings unexpected surprises to others. Initially, Professor Shen thought there might only be jade here. But after more digging, he found calligraphy and paintings and utensils. Thinking that this would be the end, taking a turn resulted in the digging of gold, silver, copper and iron. As for whether there would be other treasures in the future...
Knock knock.
Hearing knocks at the door, Professor Shen lifts his head instinctively - truly, speak of the devil.
"Professor, I came to ask about something." Shaw strides over. Standing before the desk, Shaw looks at Professor Shen with an indifferent expression, as if he’s just speaking thoughtlessly. "I heard that the excavation and inspection of the Hou Yin Tan site will be carried out soon. Anyway, my usual assignments aren’t urgent. I’m thinking of strolling around the area with you.”
Through the spectacle lenses, Professor Shen looks at the seemingly expressionless Shaw, and can’t help but chuckle.
He thinks to himself - perhaps no one has told Shaw that even though he always uses nonchalance as a cover, the insuppressible earnestness in his eyes are unable to conceal his genuine anticipation.
-
[ Chapter 5 ]
The excavation work has commenced for over a month, and everything is proceeding on tenterhooks and in an orderly manner.
Field excavation has always been a bitter and boring part of archaeological work. In addition to digging for long hours in a desolate field, it’s also common to find nothing after digging till the end. At the very least, Shaw has already experienced it several times this month.
It’s another cold and windy morning. Professor Shen comes to the excavation site early, only to find that Shaw hasn’t arrived yet, which is rare. Something noteworthy is that Shaw has been coming here earlier than him every day. But within a few minutes, Shaw appears, walking over while talking on the phone. Something is said on the other end of the line. Shaw arches his eyebrows in his signature style. "Tch, so long-winded... Got it.”
Professor Shen notices a cute rabbit pendant dangling from the bottom of Shaw’s phone, though he doesn’t know when it first appeared. He shows a smile of understanding, no longer paying attention to Shaw's actions, lowering his head to start a new day of work. After a while, a number of villagers from the vicinity also come over and they all greet Shaw first.
This is also something Professor Shen noticed on hindsight. At some point in time, Shaw had established a rapport with the villagers. Having the villagers in the vicinity cooperate and even participate in an amiable manner is another very important part of field excavation. In this aspect, Shaw's performance can be regarded as attaining a satisfactory full marks.
"Professor, leave the rest of the shaving to me." Shaw squats down beside Professor Shen, holding a shovel in his hand. Professor Shen doesn’t immediately express his opinion. Instead, he smiles slightly. "Finished your call with your girlfriend?" Shaw averts his eyes in a hurry, which is rare. He purses his lips. “Who said that she’s... Professor, don’t get infected by Mr Fu’s gossip.” Professor Shen chuckles while standing up slowly. Then, he pats Shaw on the shoulder. "I'll take a look at the pit."
Shaving is time-consuming and hard work, let alone shaving in winter. In spite of thin sunlight, the bitter cold wind hovers over the site, causing Shaw's nose to redden unknowingly. His ripped jeans have long since been covered in dust, and even his originally shiny earrings are coated in ash. Even so, Shaw simply kneels on the ground with ease, cleaning the ground while holding the shovel firmly, shovelling the ground and four walls carefully.
The shaving takes five hours.
Dinner naturally consists of a group of people eating together. When Shaw arrives, he has already taken a shower and is restored to a clean and refreshed state. However, when using chopsticks to pick out vegetables, Professor Shen notices his unusual behaviour immediately: he rarely moves his chopsticks, and he has been picking the vegetables slower than usual. After a few more glances, Professor Shen realises that his hands had turned swollen during the five consecutive hours of shaving.
Despite this, even after the meal is over, Shaw doesn’t say a word or complain at all.
Professor Shen is even more satisfied with the only graduate student he has. He can’t help but compliment him coolly. "You’ve done a good job recently. If you want to learn archeology properly, you must have this earnestness and inextinguishable momentum."
Shaw pauses for a second, but still has that triumphant expression when he speaks. "That goes without saying." But Professor Shen clearly sees how Shaw's eyes had lit up in an instant, and how his brows raised involuntarily.
Professor Shen smiles while shaking his head, looking at Shaw whose words don’t match his genuine feelings. He doesn’t know what Shaw experienced, and perhaps his cynicism is to some extent a defence mechanism. As long as he pretends not to care, there will never come a time when his expectations come to naught. And this also gives him a chance to rewind the situation. Even though amazing the world with brilliant feats bring with it surprises, it occasionally makes Professor Shen feel that what he’s doing is akin to a child looking forward to rewards...
With this thought in mind, Professor Shen smiles while walking away.
-
When Professor Shen arrives the next morning, many people are already surrounding the area. There’s an interview with the TV station today, and Professor Shen had long since pushed Shaw out. A young man with such an advantageous appearance is suitable to be on TV.
As expected, the host is holding the microphone and conducting the interview. Looking at Shaw’s knitted brows, Professor Shen can't help but laugh, knowing that he’s trying his best to answer patiently. At this moment, the host suddenly asks a rather familiar question. "Why are you studying archaeology?"
This question seems to pull time backwards to more than half a year ago, when Professor Shen met Shaw for the first time -
"Student Shaw seems to be a young man with a lot of personality. So why did you choose the archaeology major that most people find boring?”
Shaw arches his eyebrows. "Because I like it." He lifts his chin slightly, showing a determined smile. "Isn't liking something the greatest display of personality?”

kirukiyo headcanons (long ish)
If you haven’t noticed-- these two are my otp, and v3 did them both dirty... both in terms of plot and their few interactions (hi, utdp, i’m surprised they didn’t have an event with direct interaction)
I haven’t done these formally but figured I’d drop a few of my headcanons as of now, since the ideas I have for these two are fluid, but the base nature of their relationship remains about the same. You’ll see below the cut, they’re fairly in depth and give some flavor to the characters (especially Kirumi)
general summary
Subtle, subtle, subtle.
These two are experts at keeping their relationship under the table, and it takes the rest of the class--perceptive ones included-- quite a bit of time to figure out they’ve been together, even though many a student (Kokichi, Miu, Rantaro, Kaede) have made jokes about their likeness to a married couple.
While they are more than capable of adapting to the scenario, both of them are private individuals at heart, in spite how their talents require them to be around people nearly at all times. So for Kirumi especially, she prefers someone mature who can respect her desire to keep the limelight out of her personal life. After all, she prefers to keep her home and (incredibly taxing, chaotic) work life separate...
That being said, it is no secret to Class 79 (what I’ve dubbed the v3 cast in my HPA AU) and the upperclassmen (SDR2, DR3, THH) that the Ultimate Maid is a stubborn workaholic.
Thus, it takes a specific type of person to ‘get through’ to her-- specifically requesting her presence at refreshments, politely stopping her in the hallway for a conversation, all as cleverly disguised ‘breaks’ without infringing upon her time and duties. Even if it’s only momentary, small steps, persistence, and patience are key with her, as there is a fine line between obligation and devotion to one’s craft.
Korekiyo happens to be able to see past the professional ‘selflessly devoted’ front that Kirumi maintains nearly at all times, having had the opportunity to observe numerous types of people in his time as an anthropologist, and given what was seen in canon, it’s fairly evident that he was intrigued, speaking highly of her post trial (he even has a FTE in her lab!)
Initially, her insistence on wholeheartedly embodying the values of a proper maid piqued his attention, leading to him to take an interest in getting to know her more-- what makes Miss Tojo who she is, exactly? What motivates her to behave in such a way? And what of the human side of the Ultimate Maid? Such were the questions he wished to answer, and as any good researcher would do, it was necessary to approach this in a straightforward, concise manner.
Because of this unorthodox approach to getting to know her (indirectly) for a scholarly reason, Kirumi had no reason to decline his invitations to converse or shoo him away from observing her everyday duties as she would have done under normal circumstances. This in particular gave Korekiyo an advantage over many of his other peers, who would have had difficulty a) approaching her b) maintaining a sizeable conversation with her before moving onto her next task.
Eventually, the two would find they share similar interests (Victorian customs, tea preparation, etc), and get along well with each other; the meetings that began as strictly for research evolve into moments where two friends are talking.
Down the line, someone catches feels.
Now as for who that could be... let’s move to the next section to answer that.
a few typical who does/is relationship headcanons:
1. Who makes the first move and how?
Korekiyo does. While Kirumi eventually does develop feelings for him first, she won’t act on them out of concern that the quality of her work will be compromised, and stays quiet. Korekiyo, however, takes a little longer after mulling over whether his emotions can be chalked up to his general adoration for all of humanity or genuine feelings for her. He does pick up on small changes in her behavior and routine-- serving his preferred meals and tea at just the right temperature, being especially open to assisting him even when she’s terribly busy, and so on, which motivate him to make the first move. Very small, but incredibly thoughtful of her. He’s always liked the details.
The anthropologist is quite capable of being romantic if he so desires, but decides that with her in particular, it would be best to be polite and to the point. Of course, this is Korekiyo we are talking about, so he’ll still put his own twist on it-- so most likely discreetly slipping her a letter with a proper wax stamp on it expressing his feelings and a carnation, which in Japanese flower language is associated with fascination and distinction.
The letter’s contents include notes of the uniquely human aspects of her he finds especially beautiful, and are highly specific: the faint curve of her mouth that appears for a split-second (when she thinks no one is looking) after someone receives retribution for their antics, her deft, graceful movements as she slices into vegetables and pours tea, the glint in her eye that appears after a particularly challenging request is given... the list could go on and on, he writes, but it would be far too long to be appropriate for this letter, yet Kirumi Tojo’s identity is so much more than only the Ultimate Maid.
Lastly, it finishes with an attached sketch depicting one of the moments ‘when she is the most beautiful,’ showing her in her element... broom in hand, small frown on face, and scolding someone (read: Kokichi) After all, while many miss it, Korekiyo has picked up on the angry micro expressions that flit across her face after something particularly irritating has just occurred, and he loves them-- they make her humanity shine through.
Subsequently, it would prompt her to meet somewhere secluded in the evening if she reciprocates-- her missing presence would be more than enough for him to take the hint. Not that she intended on doing so.
2. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?
You’d think it would be Kirumi, but no, Korekiyo is, beneath his unusual charm and charisma, by a margin. After the passing of his sister, it left him hesitant to get close to people at a personal level, which contributes to how he ended up choosing anthropology-- not only to travel and experience the world when she could not, but because it allows for one to be ‘close’ to humans in a removed manner. So while he can easily wax poetry about nearly anything about humans, cultures, or a person, he does this in a very ‘scientific manner’ at times, preferring to view things as an observer rather than a participator. Of course, this aspect of him was integrated into his identity long before HPA, but it is this distanced nature that contributed to his initial indecisiveness about whether his feelings are organic, and the occasional concern about how much emotional intimacy he is obligated to show in a relationship. Luckily, Kirumi isn’t the type to absolutely need direct communication in a relationship, and is more subtle in demeanor as well.
Having been in the service industry for years and hiding her own emotions (from herself as well), Kirumi is proficient at recognizing others’ needs, and picks up on these issues seamlessly. She isn’t exactly the best at opening up either (this is an area of improvement for both of them), but still makes attempts to directly talk to him about this. Generally, their form of communication is largely nonverbal, being highly in tune with each other-- to this couple, actions speak louder than words, but issues like these are best addressed face-to-face, with words, before they fester.
3. Who is the most romantic?
The anthropologist takes the cake here by societal standards-- his love language is giving gifts and words of affirmation, whereas Kirumi prefers acts of service (no surprise there!) but both share quality time as a commonality, and are very attentive towards each other. Regardless of the gift, Korekiyo is always sure to pick something thoughtful and practical, the way she likes things-- though now and then there’s something more material with emotional value in the mix, which she secretly likes. Kirumi is not used to people being so direct in this department with her, so while she’ll politely cite her preference for gifts as something useful, the silk gloves and other paraphernalia he gets her are a nice way to validate she has an identity outside of being a maid.
Not to mention that he has a way with words, and is incredibly proficient at finding 50 unique ways to compliment her in public, much to her chagrin (and hidden embarrassment,) but he takes pride in, citing that she should be more proud of her accomplishments. Nevertheless, Korekiyo still finds her indirect way of showing affection endearing, especially when she attempts to politely deflect compliments as ‘doing what any maid worth their salt would have done.’
Some things never change... even though he and the other members of Class 79 have slowly gotten her to be more open about accepting assistance from others (she’s overworked herself and passed out once!)
4. Who can’t keep their hands to themselves?
Again, while both of them are capable of (and prefer) being lowkey in public, it’s free real estate in private, so once again, this goes to Korekiyo. His official love language isn’t physical touch, but he embodies all five of them quite well, this one very much included.
Kirumi, on the other hand, doesn’t like PDA out of professionalism, which makes her a bit hesitant, even in the privacy of his or her room to be comfortable with it. This isn’t to say she isn’t curious or won’t even consider the possibility, but it takes her a considerable amount of time to warm up to it. Initially, the most you’ll see from them in public is subtle touches on each other’s hand-- little playful taps here and there-- which then morph into holding hands when no one’s around to see it. In private, they’re more willing to be physically close (think head in lap while reading), and Kirumi’s brushed his hair on more than one occasion. It should be noted that one of the most intimate moments the two have had was holding hands in private without any sort of fabric acting as a barrier.
However, Korekiyo does have a cheekier side that slips out (more slyly playful to incite something interesting/fluster her) and is known to slip an arm around her waist, pulling her in close. If you squint, you might catch a faint flush on the usually unflappable Kirumi. Bonus points if this is during the evening, and a breeze blows by. Bonus bonus if this is in public, during broad daylight.
The ‘class dad’ has to assert his dominance every now and then over the unruly children, no?
5. Who says ‘I love you’ first?
Love comes in a lot of different forms and of course, at each person’s pace. Both of them circle around this topic and have essentially said it nonverbally before, but the first to vocalize it is most likely still Korekiyo. It’s not in Kirumi’s nature to be direct about her emotions (but for duties and professional matters, absolutely), so it’s up to him to say he loves her first.
It’s most likely uttered in private, accompanied with a small kiss, and very quietly-- so quiet you can barely catch it, but that doesn’t matter, because only the one who needs to hear it the most will.
conclusion
Three words best describe this relationship: mature, meaningful, and synchronized.
Both of these individuals are aloof and formal on the surface level, but if one takes the time to truly get to know them, there’s quite the intense fire burning underneath in the form of being utterly devoted to each other every step of the way. Of course, this is all done in a very reserved manner, and if they don’t want you to know about it, you won’t.
Well, if you got here, thank you for reading all of this. I’ve liked this ship for a while, and I remember being nervous to create content-- I’m sure know how volatile fandom life can be, no? Hope you enjoyed my take and spins on their relationship, and I might post more later.
Feel free to request or drop something in the askbox for these two.

Ina x MC: Sabbatical (Part 3)
Ina x MC: Sabbatical (Part 3)
Read the first two parts here: Sabbatical (Part 1) & Sabbatical (Part 2).
Summary: Ina attempts to reclaim her woman.
Warnings: I’m gonna call it angsty fluff. But more fluff this time.

Author’s Notes: Third part/finale of the Sabbatical series that was requested by @kwaj05.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Ina finally got back to her apartment, she plopped herself on the bed, sighed profoundly, and barely held herself together. She decided to call Lilian; it had been a while since they talked. She had told her about their separation, but didn’t want to get into too many details. At the time, it was still too raw and Ina could barely make out entire sentences without breaking down again.
“Hey, Auntie Ina!” Charlotte’s voice rang out.
Oh damn kids. Always so damn cheery and naive. Ina had to quickly put on a facade that was more appropriate to talk to her niece.
“Hi Charlotte! What have you been up to?” Ina asked.
“I’m reading that book you gave me for Christmas! About antropogy,” Charlotte said proudly.
“Are you enjoying erm...‘antropogy’?” Ina questioned.
“Yeah! It’s so cool!” Charlotte said.
Ina was happy that she could instill her values and academic pursuits into her little niece. She thought beat that Lilian! Your own daughter’s going to be an anthropologist. And a good one. Lilian always talked smack about how Ina was a fake doctor.
“I’m glad you’re enjoying anthropology. I’ll let you get back to the book. Can I talk to Mommy?” Ina diverted.
“Yea! Wait- Auntie Ina! Are you coming over soon? With pretty Auntie Luna?” Charlotte asked.
“Errr...sure, yes honey,” Ina said and sighed. Charlotte had asked a very valid question.
She heard a couple shuffles on the other end, and Lilian’s voice finally was heard from the other end.
“Hey, Ina.”
And just like that, Ina’s barriers crumpled down. She was almost at the verge of tears again.
“Lil, I came all the way to New York and she didn’t want to see me,” Ina trembled.
“Wait, you’re here now? What do you mean?” Lilian asked concerned.
“I flew back when I heard that Luna had gotten into an accident. I stayed with her all night. I held her hand. I told her how much I loved her. And when she woke up in the morning, she demanded that I leave,” Ina sobbed.
“I’m sorry, Ina. I know it’s been rough without her these past weeks. But what do you want to do about it? Do you want to do something about it or are you going to keep whining about it?“
Lilian’s abrasiveness did not come as a surprise to Ina. Lilian could be a nurturing mother or tough-love mother, and nothing in between. It was this tough love that Ina received most often. And it worked well for the sisters. Ina usually was able to see that she was complaining without taking action, and Lilian had taught her that self-pity wouldn’t get her very far. After all, Lilian was familiar to hard times. She knew from personal experience that moping around would not help her achieve success.
“I...I don’t know. She said she didn’t want to see me. And I respect her too much to disobey it. But god, I am so in love with her. Every moment without her feels like a waste of my time. And Lil, I want to be with her. For forever. I’m just...lost. I don’t know what to do. It hurts so much to think that she was out there looking for me when the accident happened,” Ina admitted.
“Well, give her time first. She’s probably feeling lost too. She probably still loves you,” Lilian said.
Probably.
~
A few days had passed uneventfully. Initially, Belvoire was upset that Ina had left her post, but what were they going to do? Fire the most beloved professor at the school? Not make money off the anthropology department? Ina told the administrative board that she preferred teaching to doing research, which was a complete lie, but it would have to do. It was that or losing Luna.
At the sound of each vibration from her phone, Ina perked up in anticipation. Maybe it was Luna. And time after time, she was bombarded by notifications from everyone but Luna.
But eventually, she got what she wanted.
Saturday 1/23 @1:42pm
Luna: Hey. We should probably talk. Can you come by later this evening?
Ina was on cloud nine. Finally! she thought. But then her stomach summersaulted within her. It had been so long since the pair had truly talked. And like a giddy teenager on her first date, Ina felt anxious about seeing Luna. She was too nervous to drive and had contacted Lilian to take her there.
When Lilian came to Ina’s apartment to pick her up, Ina was ready. She had a whole speech planned out in her head. Ina sat in the passenger’s seat and not even having settled in completely, her young niece made a comment.
“Woah! You look nice!” Charlotte said as her mother smirked.
And Charlotte wasn’t wrong. Ina looked good. Albeit simple, Ina wore a red pantsuit. Her makeup was done immaculately, topped off with red lipstick that matched her jacket.
After some small talk, they had finally gotten to the hospital. The same receptionist smiled at Ina, letting her in easily this time.
~
Ina knocked nervously on the door, Lilian and Charlotte hidden behind her. At first, Lilian didn’t want to impose, but Charlotte insisted on seeing Auntie Luna. And Ina figured that it could potentially help her case.
“Come in,” Luna said.
And god, did Ina miss the sound of her voice. It was warm and comforting, just like a home should be.
“You have a couple extra visitors today,” Ina said as Charlotte ran towards Luna.
“Auntie Luna!!!!” Charlotte exclaimed as she almost crashed into Luna’s open arms.
“Hey Lilian and Charlotte! How are you? Do you want to sit up here on the bed with me?” Luna asked. She hadn’t even looked nor addressed Ina, and for a split second, Ina was jealous of her own niece.
Luna picked up Charlotte so that they could be sitting on the bed together.
“I brought Scrabble!”
“You don’t need to play if you don’t wan-” Ina interjected and Luna glared at Ina. Ina’s face reddened in embarrassment.
“Let’s play, Charlotte!” Luna said. Cutely nerdy. Just like Ina, Luna thought to herself.
Luna, Charlotte and Lilian played Scrabble while Ina sat off to the side. Ina ran through her thoughts. Luna had texted her to come, but the glare was disheartening. But she was determined. She had to win her woman back. Ina ran out of the room, an idea formulating in her head. Lilian and Luna looked at her strangely, but they continued to entertain Charlotte.
Meanwhile, Ina darted across the street. She wanted her woman back and would do anything to achieve her goal. Ina practically made her way around New York. She stopped at various places, just to get set up her extravagant redemption date.
Although Ina went as quickly as possible, an hour had passed by. Charlotte had knocked out on the foot of the bed. Lilian and Luna proceeded to talk, finally unconstrained by Charlotte’s youthful presence.
“What Ina did...well, she should’ve told you about the sabbatical,” Lilian reflected. Luna only scoffed.
“I know how much her career means to her, but well...I hope she would’ve told me. We could’ve worked it out,” Luna said.
“And now, do you think you can work it out?” Lilian asked.
“I...” Luna began, but luckily she was saved by the bell. Ina walked in briskly, her hands full of things that she had just bought.
“I better go...Charlotte’s going to be confused if she doesn’t wake up her bed,” Lilian said.
And this was enough reason for both women to oust Lilian and her young daughter. Ina carried Charlotte out to Lilian’s car, kissing her forehead as she strapped on her seatbelt.
“Go get your woman,” Lilian smiled.
“I will,” Ina said. Finally, a small smile appeared on her face, the first smile after weeks of incessant crying and frowns. Ina had the opportunity to get Luna back, and she wouldn’t take it for granted. Not anymore.
Ina returned to Luna’s room. Now it was real; there were no distractions left.
“Hey,” Ina said as she closed the door.
“Hey,” Luna returned. “Sit down, please.”
Ina began speaking, but she was swiftly cut off by Luna.
“Let me go first, please,” Luna interrupted. “You know goddamn well you should’ve told me about the sabbatical.”
“I- yes. I know. My failure to communicate with you, well, it’s cost me everything,” Ina said melancholically.
“Ina, look, at first I was upset by the accident. I wanted to catch you at the airport like all those stupid, corny romcoms we would watch together. Even though it didn’t turn out like that,” Luna said gesturing at her physical appearance. “I don’t blame you for the accident. I shouldn’t have been driving in that state. And I don’t want you blaming yourself for it.”
Guilt crept onto Ina’s features. Luna knew that Ina was still blaming herself.
“I...I understand,” Ina said slowly. “I’m so sorry, Luna.”
“Again Ina, don’t blame yourself. Please.”
And just like that, Ina burst out into tears. All the pain, all the emotion, all the guilt she was holding let out suddenly.
“Hey...shh...come here,” Luna said, offering her arms to embrace Ina.
Ina crawled onto the bed. It had been a long time since they had shared one. Luna wiped away Ina’s tears as she held her in her other arm.
“It’s okay. Everything’s gonna be okay. Now we’re here. Together,“ Luna consoled.
The two shared a couple more moments in each other’s arms. Ina felt safe while being embraced by Luna. After she gained some form of coherence, she clasped Luna’s hands and stared straight into the younger woman’s eyes.
“I’m sorry. I was selfish when thinking about the sabbatical. And I should’ve told you when I was applying. I think I was just scared of losing you. Maybe I did that either way. Anyway, my time without you made me realized that well, you’re everything. You’re everything I’ve ever needed and everything I’ll ever need. God, I’m so madly in love with you, it’s actually terrifying. But anything with you is less terrifying. I want everything with you, Lu. I want to hold you until we fall asleep. I want to wake up next to you the following morning. I want to be nerdy with you. I want to plan lavish dates with you. I want to travel the world with you. I want you in every part of my life. And I don’t want to spend a minute without you. I’ll work towards making it up to you. I’ll tell you how much I love you every second of the day. Tell me what I need to do and I’ll do it. I’ll do anything to have you back in my arms. I’ll do anything to make sure that you’re mine again. And if you’ll have me, I’ll spend every moment showing you that I love you with everything in me, Luna. Wherever you are, that’s my home.”
The two women were both crying like babies by now. Funnily enough, the nurse had peered into the room and backed out just as quickly as he saw this unfolding. Nope! I’m not paid enough for that, he thought.
Luna, through her tears could only produce one short sentence. “You know, you talk a lot, Ina,” she jested.
Smiling, Ina felt a sense of relief rush through her. She had done it.
“I’m glad this turned out well because...I bought a ton of stuff. Otherwise, it would’ve been awkward,” Ina said hopping off the bed. Then she presented Luna with a bouquet of red roses. Luna was happy to have received them, but her eyes jumped at when she saw something else.
“Baby, I didn’t tell you how damn fine you look toda- Oh my god! Non-hospital food!” Luna said as Ina took out the takeout boxes.
Ina climbed back into the bed, pulling Luna’s blanket over the two of them. The two ate together happily, catching up on their time apart. Ina put her arm around Luna and turned to face her. She rested her forehead against her lover’s and whispered “I love you.” Luna smiled happily, her lips meeting Ina’s.
Ina rested her head on Luna’s shoulder. The witty and clever woman she was so blindly in love with was back. And she was hers. Forever.

The 14th Department (AFTERL!FE) Meets the Demon Brothers and Undateables (Obey Me!)
Lucifer
Noah heard he has a dog.  He is staying far away from the pretentious eldest.
Oldest big brother?  You better believe Youssef finds a kindred spirit, even if they differ wildly in personalities.
Louis lives for the almost regal aesthetic Lucifer has got going on.  Lucifer, in turn, lives for the day Louis will stop talking.
Quincy finds this whole trip preposterous (“What the heck is the Devildom?  What happened to the Underworld?”) and does not like Lucifer’s condescending attitude (it conflicts with his own!).
Ethan doesn’t like Lucifer—proud and arrogant people with no reason to be so are not to be respected.  Lucifer despises Ethan for the same reason.
Day!  Will!  Not!  Go!  Near!  Lucifer!  He’s so scary!  But Cerberus is his best friend now (Nine-Nine who?).
Nine and Theo together find out that the eldest demon is into classical music and spend hours discussing early compositions with him.
Ell cannot be around this demon!  He is a fallen angel!  He tries to be nice (and because Ell is kind, so is Lucifer, even if the sickly sweetness of the angel drives him up the wall), but every good wish is punctuated with a sneeze.
Lucifer is so overworked, so by way of his calm disposition and love for meditation, Jamie helps him find ways to relax.
The eldest demon’s general demeanor astonishes June.  How manly he is!
Likewise, Sian can’t go near Lucifer without feeling nervous.  The man drips dominating energy!
Verine can’t understand the eldest’s love for classical music.  Rock is infinitely better.
Mammon
Um, Mori and him are best friends.  They together cause trouble in the House of Lamentation and in the 14th Department with their many get-rich-quick schemes.
Gaudy and expensive taste?  Sign Louis up.
Ethan says ‘no’ to the demon’s general pomposity (it reeks of low self-esteem) and by God, doesn’t he own anything that depicts an iota of class?
Mammon is one speedy demon—how can Kirr not appreciate his fleetfootedness when it would bring him so much use whilst hunting?  Apart from that, Kirr has no respect for that reprehensible thief, for the very idea of stealing brings back terrible memories.
Always belittled by their peers, Day and Mammon find a kindred spirit in each other, and Day is always reminded of his past life when he sees all the gold that Mammon professes to possess possesses.
Kati bit him twelve times because no dumb tsundere was going to steal his (cough Aitachi’s) spot as cutest in the Department!
Licht is eclipsed by Mammon’s demon form because how is he able to pull off wearing so little clothing so well?  He must take notes.  When he learns that Mammon is a model, too, he goes berserk with delight.
Cyrille finds the secondborn exceedingly stupid, although he begrudgingly gives him credit for being pretty decent at math.
Sian spots a fellow tsundere and runs away, because oh my God, it’s so obvious that Mammon likes this MC person!
Leviathan
Games?  Social awkwardness?  Extreme interest in things that no one else seems to care for?  Cyrille has found his soulmate!
Aitachi and Kirr cringe at how Leviathan spends his leisure time, but are intrigued because they have never seen such methods of gaming and media consumption before.
Leviathan is forever at Quincy’s mercy, for the fellow demon has no qualms of absolutely crushing Levi’s already non-existent self-esteem.
Even though he loathes to admit it, Sian really likes the rhythm games Leviathan plays, and the thousands of idol posters in his room make him strangely nostalgic of his past life.
June wonders how Levi can go so long without feeling the overwhelming need to burst into a sprint now and again.
Theo almost kills the thirdborn because how is his room filled with so many Demonrito and Hell Mountain Dew containers?  What filth!
Speaking of filth, Licht finds some of Levi’s dating sims and oh my darling, some of them are quite … lewd.
Ghilley and Leviathan together construct an elaborate Lego model of a castle from the anime My Sister Is A Fairy Princess, And Her Suitor Is Secretly An Ogre From a Land Far Away And Wants to Eat Us All, And It’s Up to Me to Save My Sister’s Kingdom.
Ethan can’t even walk past Leviathan’s room without a disapproving “tut.”  Has the demon no discipline, despite being rumored to be the Grand Admiral of Hell’s Navy?
Kati spends all day poking at the cute monster and waifu figurines situated in Levi’s bedroom.  He thinks Azuki-tan is cute, but not as cute as him, and anyone who says otherwise will get bitten!
Aitachi likes to rifle through Leviathan’s anime sword replica collection and giggle because in combat, they would be of no more use than a toothpick.
Satan
Finally!  Someone with sense! thinks Ethan.  Boy, do these two get along, right down to their educated and proper mannerisms to their mutual hatred of Lucifer.
Verine can’t go near Satan without coughing violently because the forthborn always has some manner of cat hair on him, no matter how diligently he preens.
Cats are infinitely better than dogs, so Noah sticks close to Satan.
Cyrille thought he had found a friend in Satan, who always has his nose in a book, but it turns out, Satan is more philosophically-and-intellectually-versed, while Cyrille is more scientific.
Nine likes Satan, for he is as calm as himself.  Strangely enough, they both seem to have hidden wrathful feelings and bond over this.
Kitties! :D is all Day can think when he sees the fourthborn.
Youssef enjoys Satan’s company, too, for they both are anthropological in nature—always watching, but never interfering until there is a need.
Blond and princelike are the two of them, but Louis is sorely disappointed when Satan’s royal appearance is merely a façade of darker emotions to come, where Louis enjoys life in its every aspect.  “How disappointing art thou, Satan!”  Louis throws rose petals in distress.
Kirr and Aitachi try to hunt one of Satan’s cats, thinking it was some kind of Devildom’s finest prey.  Satan does not forgive them for the attempt.
Theo sneezes the moment he enters Satan’s room.  Although everything is in its place and not truly messy by any means, he refuses to let the stacks and stacks of books sit idly by when they are begging to be put in shelves!
Quincy and Satan each add to their respective repertoire of curses in their time together.  It does not bode well for anyone in the House of Lamentation or 14th Department.
Asmodeus
They are … essentially the same person, so you can bet your ass that Licht and Asmo absolutely live for each other’s company.  They literally spend hours modeling clothes together, discussing fashion, gossiping about their romantic exploits, and praising their overall appearance.
Louis joins in too, although he mostly stays for the latter, and the three vanquish away many nights complimenting their own and the others’ looks.
Sometimes Asmo likes to sew patches and sequins onto his clothes and mend them to his own design, and Aitachi, who likes to sew, learns many different ways of stitching from the fifthborn, although he hates the fact that Asmo, like Licht, never shuts up about what an “adorable and cute warrior” he is!
Asmo has to know Kirr’s hair care routine, which Kirr gives in one, succinct sentence: “I wash it.  Sometimes.”
Nine has to constantly flee Asmodeus’ presence because it is in his nature to compliment the Soul Reaper on how absolutely beautiful he looks.
Kati expects makeovers, all of which should emphasize his cuteness, every other day.
Don’t ask how long Mori spent calculating how much money Asmo spends on beauty products, because he wept at the end of it.
Verine refuses to step a foot into Asmodeus’ room because do you know how much his sinuses are going to bother him when he spends even a second into a room so deeply entrenched in the fragrance of flowers and perfume?
Ghilley is used to a personality so akin to his roommate, Licht, so he has no qualms in dealing with Asmo and quite likes the gossip he is quietly able to distill from the fifthborn.
Beelzebub
Brothers in their flaming orange hair, June gloms onto Beel with astounding loyalty (Theo refuses to admit jealousy, but ...), especially when he hears of his dedication to his twin.
Cyrille has to interrogate Beel on the structural integrity of his wings in his demon form because there is no way that such a flimsy apparatus could lift a demon of Beel’s stature even an inch into the air!  Also, how much does Beel exercise if he expects to gain muscle and burn off the infinite calories that he consumes?  It is a scientific mystery.
Day likes snacks, Beel likes snacks!  Everything is right in the world (even if the demon accidentally mistook Day’s hair for a mint ice cream cone).
Jamie is constantly offering fresh fruits and vegetables to the sixthborn, but even though he eats them willingly, Beel much prefers foods that will actually fill him up for a short amount of time.
Again, Ethan is appalled by the lack of discipline Beelzebub shows.  The demon is simply a slave to his appetite and deserves nothing less than scorn.
Theo cannot decide if he likes or hates the fact that Beel leaves a trail of crumbs wherever he goes.  On one hand, he gets to clean, but on the other hand, it’s so messy ...
Even though he has many misgivings of fallen angels, even Ell cannot help but like Beel!  As long as he is fed, the demon is very sweet and kind.
Noah likes Beel, too.  Something about his easygoing and generally cheerful personality pleases him to no end.
Beel tried to eat Kati’s hair, thinking it was a yummy bun.  Sadly, he got bit more times than Mammon.
Youssef is a good cook and is thereby followed by Beel wherever he goes.  The kind Soul Reaper doesn’t mind, though.
Belphegor
Noah likes how Belphie takes things easily and calmly, although it probably wouldn’t hurt for him to get more exercise.
Belphegor is even more of a conundrum to June than Leviathan was.  He decides that next time he goes to the Devildom, he’s going to bring an extra pair of running shoes because the demon most certainly was wanting of physical exertion!
Kirr is absolutely astonished at the unguarded and completely lax way Belphie sprawls out in the House of Lamentation, sleeping.  If he was an enemy tribesman, he would have no trouble in taking the demon down as he slept.
“This kind of laziness is not fit for a warrior at all!” cries Aitachi any time he seems Belphie dozing off.
Jamie likes Belphegor’s way of thinking.  Sometimes, sitting under an apple tree in the sweltering summer heat after a hard day of work just causes one to be overcome with the desire to take a nap.
Youssef tries to brew Belphie a cup of espresso, but the caffeine just doesn’t seem to have an effect on the Avatar of Sloth.
Although he is slightly disheartened by the fact that his quiet footsteps seem to have no effect on the seventhborn, as he is always asleep, Ghilley revels in the prospect of drawing unsavory graffiti on the demon’s face when he slumbers.
Day sometimes tries to rouse Belphie, and Belphie, in turn, tries to kill Day.
Like his observations on his twin, Cyrille cannot fathom how the demon could sleep so much.  How could one body need so much rest?
Simeon
Ell loves him.  How can he not?  He is the perfect angel!  He is also very curious as to how the Celestial Realm of Obey Me!’s world works compared to the one in AFTERL!FE.
His whole aesthetic mesmerizes Louis.  There’s something so tranquil but regal about it.
Licht wants to know where he can get an exact copy of Simeon’s outfit because darling, it's gorgeous.
Youssef probably spends more time around Simeon than he should, but his calm demeanor is so refreshing compared to the chaos in the 14th Department and the House of Lamentation.
Kirr and Aitachi together lament with Simeon on the struggles of working with technology.  Why is it so difficult?
Something about the angel’s holy air makes Mori very much not inclined to ask him how much the gold clasp on his cape is worth.
Quincy hates the “pretentious” and “stuck up” angel and bickers with him almost as much as he bickers with Ell.  Simeon never responds to his goading, although ... he does get a bit prickly when Quincy criticizes Luke or the Celestial Realm too harshly.
Encouraged by the prospect that he can actually breathe in the (fresh-smelling) presence of Simeon, Verine enjoys his company, but is perpetually annoyed by the fact that the angel seems to pity him for his condition.
Ethan can’t hate Simeon, either.  He is the sole honorable character he can find in the entire Devildom, even though he has to admit that it seems that the angel is hiding something.
Day really likes Simeon!  He’s so nice and is always ready to play with him.
As a man of science, Cyrille scoffs at Simeon (and Luke’s) unfaltering belief in religion.
Luke
Kati bites him on sight.  Luke just seems irritating and how dare he think himself cuter than him!
Aitachi sympathizes with Luke, for they both lament on not being taken seriously because of their age.
Luke reminds him a bit too much of a chihuahua for Noah to be too fond of him, but the little angel means well, so Noah suffers his incessant barking out of (Kind)ness.
Day is a human puppy ... and Luke is an angel chihuahua.  They get along great, although Luke makes it his most important goal to Christianize Day, who seems to believe in other things!
Quincy wonders when Luke will stop talking and is constantly entertaining thoughts of hastening the day when he will.  Likewise, Luke wishes the “horrible demon” would go away forever.
As a fellow angel, Ell finds Luke to be great fun.  It’s strange though, Luke seems to always be expressing the opposite of what he’s feeling in typical tsundere fashion, but he never sneezes.
Sian finds Luke to be of the utmost annoyance.  He’s so short (heh) and yappy and annoying!
Kirr wonders if the little angel will make a good hunting dog, but after he realizes that Luke has a lot of trouble keeping his mouth closed, he thinks  better of it.
His dealings with Day cause Nine to be an excellent caretaker of Luke when Simeon is away.  You just have to deal with exuberant personalities like his carefully, is all.
Ghilley and Licht give Luke “five stars” in terms of cuteness.  The young angel does not approve!
Theo stays far away from Luke.  Children are walking crumb-and-stain-factories and he is not going to get dirty.
Solomon
Quincy and Solomon exchange many spell incantations and curses and keep the rest of the Soul Reapers, angels, and demons in an uproar with their constant shenanigans.
When he notices that Solomon has many fortune-telling artifacts in his room, Kati rifles through them all (without permission), much to the sorcerer’s amusement, especially when Kati discovers many supposedly unpleasant things about his future.
Although Quincy and Solomon are the true troublemaking duo in terms of pranks (Satan helps, sometimes), Day and Solomon are almost equal in measure, although much of Day’s rogurey is an accident, and he never means to cause any harm!
Licht is instantly enamored by Solomon’s cape—what style!  You can see the entire Milky Way embroidered on it (Cyrille instantly assures him that that is not actually the case)!
Ghilley can’t help but wonder why anyone thinks Solomon is shady.  He seems to be a pretty upstanding, if chaotic, guy?
Youssef admires the humanity of Solomon.  In a land of angels and demons and even Soul Reapers, it’s good to have someone so normal.
Unlike Ghilley, Ethan definitely notices that something shady is afoot when Solomon is around.  Because of this, he tails the sorcerer wherever he goes, for he’d rather not a ruckus be caused.
Sian has many questions for Solomon on the status of idols in the Human World since he left it.  What are the newest trends?  The most popular groups?  The most admired dance moves?  He wants to know it all.
Barbatos
Cyrille finds the whole time-travel aspect of Barbatos’ powers intriguing and derails the butler from his duties for hours in attempts to understand the nuances of this overpowering concept.
Ethan privately thinks that he looked much better in a butler suit than the demon.  What is even going on with the front of his outfit?  A diligent and uncomplaining demon is Barbatos, and Ethan has to respect him for that, even if he is a position so beneath his own.
He’s so scary! D: thinks Day, even though Barbatos is nothing but kind to him.
Kirr likes the fine fare that Barbatos cooks, although he laments not being able to win “the mind game” against the butler, who he spends many hours staring coolly at.
Theo and Barbatos spend many an evening chatting about the best way to maintain the most perfect state of cleanliness.
The strong smell of detergent follows Barbatos sometimes, and Verine can never bring himself too close to the demon.  However, he has to begrudgingly admit that if it weren’t for the overwhelming stench of chemicals, he would be breathing in a suffocating cloud of dust particles, so he has to thank the butler for that.
Jamie gives Barbatos many good recipes for fruit pies and Youssef can’t wait to try all the (possibly) delicious recipes that Barbatos recites to him.
Ghilley, unfortunately, finds it very difficult to sneak up on the butler, for Barbatos has seen all Ghilley’s attempts to scare him in all the timelines he has observed.
Diavolo
This bumbling idiot is the ruler of the Devildom? thinks Ethan with great distaste.  However dignified Diavolo might be, Ethan cannot see past the blindingly cheerful mask he puts on and finds it most undignified.
A fellow royal!  How is Louis supposed to resist striking a long-winded conversation?  Diavolo entertains Louis’ pompous and overbearing self and they find each other most delightful.
Licht positively drools over Diavolo’s demon form outfit.  Just how he is pulling off that much style?
Quincy finds much enjoyment in disrespecting the Prince of the Devildom to no end and is always disappointed when Diavolo responds to his insults with a tolerating smile.
The Prince of Demons and the son of the Demon Lord are titles that are essentially the bane of Ell’s existence, but he manages to be most respectful toward him, even though he is shaking in his shoes and wondering when all their interactions will come to and end.
Day lived like a king in his past life and is not even remotely fazed by the enormous amount of finery found in the Demon Lord’s Castle.  He is, however, enamored with the Little D’s, who, when not insulting him, are great fun!
Diavolo’s lifestyle of luxury is basically Mori’s dream, so he takes every opportunity to make notes of the expensive furniture and ancient pieces.
Noah and Youssef like how down-to-Earth Diavolo is, despite his high position.  They feel as if he has something to hide, but for the most part, he is a jolly fellow and they enjoy his company.

This might be a lot since there’s so many characters in APWH, but could you share something secret about each character that no one else knows or maybe just a fun fact?
I am so sorry I’m answering this so late- I try not to be a human disaster, but inevitably end up being one most days.
Oooooooh this one is very interesting- they might not all be secrets, because for some characters, that would be giving away major plot points, but fun facts I can do! Let’s see what I’ve got (below the cut):
Robb: Has definitely licked a bone on a dare before, is actually a decent artist (much like Sansa) and does a fair amount of sketching in the field, and has an engagement ring for Tal in his work locker that no one knows about yet :) Inherited Catelyn’s ability for leadership, and is really good at dealing with Logistics, management, and the bureaucracy involved in his job. Hangs out with the experimental archeology students a lot (he’s like the accidental older brother for half the department) and would definitely wear handmade linen armor from someone’s project and let an undergrad shoot arrows at him to test it. (For those of you unaware, linen armor is next to impossible to cut without an extremely specific and sharp type of electric saw). Is good friends with Sarella, who’s going through grad school in Oldtown as well. Has been reluctantly dragged into the feud between the archaeology/anthropology and paleontology departments.
Aegon: is a fairly talented piano player, has always liked to cook, but got really good at it when he was dating an adjunct professor in grad school (none of his family knows about the relationship, but Theon does). Has been taking night classes recently to try and learn the Old Tongue bc he and Lyanna are particularly close. Dates casually, and volunteers at a community center for at-risk kids in Kings Landing on weekends. Is the only Targ sibling emotionally aware enough to spend time with Viserys, and is his grandmother Rhaella’s favorite.
Rhae: Actually really likes listening to heavy metal, especially when she’s working, and is really into the Westerosi equivalent of late night comedy. Will get really invested in hobbies for like, a few months and then move on to something completely different. Is her grandfather Aerys’ favorite, and has him wrapped around her finger. Makes a game of antagonizing Viserys at Targ family functions, and has been inseparable from Margaery since they met in college. Thought her cousin Obara was the coolest person in the world when she was a kid. Most likely of all the characters to do a triathlon without breaking a nail.
Bran: Might be one sociology class away from identifying as an anarchist. Kind of wants to be a professor and will probably write novels someday. Is really into flea markets and will go antiquing with Ned and Elia and sometimes Cat. Loves kayaking and decorates his wheelchair elaborately for holidays. He’s won several costume contests at school for it. Very snarky. If Sansa had been raised by the starks, they would have had a standing Saturday lunch date to snark and gossip about the rest of the fam.
Jon: wanted to be a forest ranger for the longest time and then a writer, but felt like he had to choose a more reputable career, and is kind of jealous that Robb decided to say ‘fuck it’ and become an archaeologist. Really wants to travel, although he picked law after His Valyrian is passable (the targ sibs spoke it anytime they were with Rhaegar and fam), but he speaks Rhoynish fluently and is close to his cousins on the Martell side of the family. Really likes hiking and will often go with Cat, who is also fairly outdoorsy. Likes epic high fantasy novels and would really love LOTR.
Mya: is weirdly into dream interpretation, is bisexual, and has fallen into one of the canals in Braavos before on a school field trip. She was born in the Vale, and her mom moved to Braavos when she was five. Would definitely eat a bug on a dare. More tomboy than anything, but really enjoys getting dressed up and being feminine. Likes painting her nails fun colors. Who gives a shit about gender expectations? Not Mya.
Sansa: the first person she kisses in APWH isn’t going to be Jon…;) If she’d been raised by the Starks, she might have gone to school for journalism or become a novelist. Hates math, but is a passable accountant because of what Baelish taught her to help him with the books for his restaurants. Doesn’t like to ever wear her hair down, and has a collection of decorative bobby pins for updos that she’s acquired from flea markets in Braavos. Really loves to swim. Pushed the boy who knocked Mya into the canal in after her, but none of the teachers believe him when he accuses her, because it’s sweet, kind, well-behaved Sansa.
Robin: Secretly likes to listen to musicals and is a fairly good singer. In a group chat with Doree and Loree who are drastically improving his social skills and the three of them are parent-trap level plotting. Really dislikes doctors and hospitals. Used to ask Sansa to draw birds for him a lot when he was younger and still has most of them.
Rickon: is actually better with computers and smarter than anyone realizes, because he’s such a jock on the surface. Very used to going with the flow and adapting to change. His favorite classes are chemistry and bio, but he doesn’t really like writing. Is really popular and well-liked among his classmates, but can have a temper when he thinks an injustice is occurring. Is generally just good with animals.
Catelyn: Grew up going hunting with her uncle and always had a stronger stomach for it than Lysa and Edmure did. Is half-estranged from her father because of a disagreement they had regarding Catelyn’s inability to move on after the kidnapping, and a tense relationship with her brother after he married Roslyn Frey (The Freys were vocal supporters of Roose Bolton’s politics and had a hand in publicizing the rumors about the Starks being responsible for Sansa’s disappearance- Walder Frey owns several prominent southern newspapers), but they’re working on mending fences. Takes fairly long walks outside regularly, and would be a bruce springsteen fan. The most intimidating of the entire family.
Arya: Went through a true crime phase. Really enjoys learning languages, her favorite classes this past semester were her Ancient Ghiscari course and her global politics seminar, because they got to debate current issues every week. Like Sansa, she really likes people-watching. Will probably end up at the Olympics for fencing at some point, but was also a sprinter in high school on the track team.
Ned: Probably dropped acid at least once in college. Really enjoys skiing. Learned how to play the guitar as a part of his midlife crisis. Met Cat after she went on two dates with his brother Brandon and they decided they were better as friends. Brandon brought her to a party, and Ned ended up giving her a ride home after his brother found another girl to chat up. They quickly found out that they had a lot in common, and she got along famously with his mother, who Ned was extremely close to. Has a serious sweet tooth
Elia: Likes to paint, but doesn’t think she’s very good at it. Grew up speaking Rhoynish with her family, and taught it to the kids. Has forgotten more about art than most people will ever know, and is extremely efficient when set loose in a flea market. Really likes theater and ballet, and took ballet classes through college.
Lyanna: is working on a book about money in Westerosi politics that’s tied into her current investigation of the Boltons, but only Elia knows about it. Grew up far north, and her first language was the Old tongue rather than Andali, but didn’t want her kids picking it up, because the accent is stigmatized. Keeps notes for her articles in the Old Tongue to keep her nosy kids from reading them.
Theon: Is doing a psychiatry residency in King’s Landing currently. Does a fair amount of biking, and 100% does a polar bear swim in the ocean every winter (Aegon always shows up to cheer him on and they go out for drinks afterwards- his girlfriend, Jeyne, thinks this is insane). Refuses to eat blue foods and was actually a decent French horn player in high school.
Thank you- this was a fun one!! :)

Tumblr media
So this was sent to me by @atiredpan weeks ago when the White Jon conversation was very live and I'm posting it (belatedly) with their blessing (they didn't want to put it up publicly and have it seem like an attack which I really very much appreciate but wouldn't have minded) and I percolated for a few days and then got very busy for a few weeks. Response follows.
So I feel weird about how I'm responding to this stuff, I'm launching rapidly into taking about/explaining my own experience in a way I'm worried maybe comes across as a direct comparison. It kind of feels like I'm talking in a way that's like brushing off your experience and saying OK BUT HERE'S WHY I'M RIGHT and that's not what I'm trying to do, it's just that there's not much I can usefully add to what you've said - you know your experience better than I do, and I'm not gonna go around trying to read into it or reexplain it. So I'm going to talk about where I am/have been coming from, but not with the intention of countering your points, all of which I think really resonate.
First off, the post where I was like "Jon is white and if you disagree you're Wrong" was, unreservedly, just a shitty post and I'm not suprised it upset a lot of people. I'm really very sorry about that, it was thoughtlessly written and pretty stupidly posted.
I totally get that my whiteness has fed into how I hced Jon (and as I think I've said before I saw Jon a certain way well before I engaged with any fanworks, just as you did). There's a lot of reasons I imagined Jon as white from pretty early on, a non-negligible one of which was like...That's Jonny. This is a podcast by Jonny, about a character with the same name and mannerisms as Jonny, and Jonny is extremely white. It would have felt weird, when I was listening to TMA as a Friend Podcast, to stick a brown face onto what at least appeared at the time to basically be a self-insert character of my white friend. Now that's a really personal thing informed less by the story and more by the circumstances under which I've interacted with it, but it certainly laid a baseline. I didn't really have a clear mental picture of Jon (or most of the characters) for a looooooong time (for an artist I'm really not a very visual thinker) but I had a few sort of mental sketches (Jon is short white balding and awkward, Martin is tall biracial and scruffy Basira is fat and somali Melanie is my friend from work etc) which I developed a long time before I encountered fanworks.
I saw the alienation you mentioned and I connected it to class and gender, not race, because I’ve met a lot of cis men, white and otherwise, who interpolate trauma, class insecurity, insecurity about their own abilities, and so on into withdrawal, denial and snappiness. So for me I had an interpretation of that element of his personality which was pretty much race-neutral, and then I had these existing cues leading me to assuming he was white (largely that Jonny is white, but also wee stuff in the story that...it’s not like anything substantial enough to remember, let alone justify, but there were certainly interactions that pinged whiteness for me personally)
There are actually iirc a few throwaway references to Jon being promoted above more qualified candidates throughout (or at least I thought I knew that before s5), but the time I decided I thought White Jon was an obvious conclusion was of course the conversation where Sasha expresses frustration about it. and the context of that conclusion (at least as far as I can see) wasn't "people of colour can only exist in subservient positions/defined by oppression" but was informed by two things that were going on with my life around the time that episode aired
I had been having several conversations with friends of mine (and largely friends of Jonny's) who work in London in the museums/archiving sector and who are the only women of colour in whole departments or even whole museums, and who experience so little career mobility compared to their less-qualified white counterparts (we're talking about women graduating top of their class at Oxbridge with anthropology or library science masters and stellar original research, with a decade or more of impeccable work experience and acting up, being left in internship and low-grade positions, while white men who "fit the culture" but have 0 museums experience sail into upper management positions and then stay there until they retire). So I'd come almost directly from these conversations into what to me sounded like exactly the same gripe in TMA.
I'd been at that point working for about a year and a half on co-coordinating the anti-oppression committee in my workplace, which was a very Good Progressive Activist Charity with Good Lefty Principles, and over the course of experience sharing and discussions both with colleagues of colour and along lines of wealth, disability, class etc, I was very much confronted with the realisation of how much 'being adequately qualified' meant different things for middle-class good-university white men vs much more highly skilled and hardworking women of colour or people of different class and wealth backgrounds. Obviously I'd known that before in principle, but not really having been in Salaried Workplaces (as opposed to like. service and retail hourlies) I hadn’t got so up close and personal with it. So that was also very fresh in my mind, this like...big substantial experience of how Good, Well-Meaning, Caring, Thoughtful, Woke white men just........did not need to think about this. at all. and were startled and discomforted to face it. and that this was also true of most white middle-class women. and these conversations were really carved down the middle between white middle-class European women saying ‘this is such a surprise when we have such an equitable hiring policy and diverse staff, that there’s this gender gap’ and women of colour in the room wearily saying ‘yeah, there’s a gender gap, there’s always a gender gap and it is always a racialised gender gap’ so yeah I was definitely thinking about the intersection between being passed over at work because of gender and because of race.
The point about Tim is interesting because I think for me what’s getting lost is that I don’t think Jon is entitled as like...a Character Trait. He’s not like...Toxic Masculinity Man. He is very anxious about boundaries and about his own capacity to do harm. But it has to be pointed out to him where he’s doing harm. He doesn’t notice where he’s been unfairly advantaged, and that’s to me much more reflective of most people’s relationship to white or male entitlement.
As I say, that exchange with Tim and Sasha cemented the Jon Is White hc in my head specifically because it was so reflective of conversations I had had with women of colour working in similar workplaces, about white men, usually about white men they generally liked or at least didn’t have beef with beyond their unfair advantages.
It seems odd to me to frame ‘bitching about your boss on your friend’s behalf to make her feel better’ as more similar to white entitlement/white privilege than any of that tbh? That’s just...being friends with someone?
Anyway I recognise that it’s not white entitlement to accept a job. Obviously it’s not, it’s just sensible under the circumstances, you get lucky and you grab it. For me my sense of Jon as white-because-of-this is not “he took a job he shouldn’t have taken,” it’s more about his obliviousness to the impact he has on others, and also primarily how people react to him. The interaction between Sasha and Tim is saturated with the of course it would be him I mentioned above, but even before that he walks through the world not expecting to have to think about anything but his conscious decisions, and he’s caught aback when people see him as out of place or as having power above his station.
I think it’s impossible to extricate ‘this is where my head was at’ from that interpretation, and also like obviously my own whiteness is a big factor. And not just my own personal whiteness but the place I grew up (which was 98.3% white) and the world which reflects back whiteness. So this is in no way intended as a bolshy This Is The Correct Headcanon the way my Bad Post was bc examining it I’m like...yeah I mean this is about how I personally interpreted this based on where I was at at the time. But I do feel like there’s some communication gap in what it is about this unqualified promotion thing that pinged me - it’s not that All Bosses Must Be White And All Brown People Must Be Downtrod, it’s something quite specific about the tone and tenor of the interactions around the getting-a-job.
But also? Idk. Kind of unrelatedly, and people obviously should feel free to disagree with me on this, it feels kind of off to frame this as defaulting to a white Jon? I sort of think that my idea of Jon as white is very much not ‘white until proven otherwise’ - part of the reason for my original strident tone was that I felt that I was being expected to drop a headcanon I had for specific reasons and default to the fanon version of Jon without actually having any reason other than ‘this is how the community thinks he should look,’ and without really understanding anything about what that means, and while obviously defaulting to a non-white headcanon isn’t like...entrenched in the way that defaulting to a white headcanon is, it does seem to me like this is perhaps part of why white fans slap brown skin onto a character without thinking into what that means or why they’re doing it.
The thing I’m struggling with as regards my personal headcanon here is that I could decide to only ever draw Jon as Fanon Jon, but it wouldn’t be because I had strong reasons to see him that way, it wouldn’t be the same as why you see Jon as brown, or why I see like...Melanie as Indian, it would literally be Default To Standard in a way it isn’t for you. And I don’t feel that I have Defaulted To Whiteness, or where I have it is for reasons specifically to do with Jon (I visualised Jon as white because I visualised him as Jonny, who is white), not because I think every character is White Until Proven Otherwise. Like, my reasons for understanding Jon as white may be bad reasons, but they are reasons, not post-hoc excuses (I can’t like...prove that. but I know it to be true at least on a conscious level). I didn’t go Oh Jon Is White Because Everyone Is Unless I Have Reason To Think They Aren’t, Hooray, Here Is A Post-Hoc Justification For Why It Isn’t Racist To Think That. So while I am totally on board with the idea that it may be shitty, harmful or poorly thought through to hc Jon as white, I’m not sure I can fully see it in myself as being default. But I do understand that that isn’t necessarily what came across in my original short post.
Honestly, the reason I took issue with Fanon Jon and Fanon Martin in such a bolshy way in the first place was that I didn’t get why these characters were universally seen as Asian and white, respectively, and had such strong and consistent fanon images, when none of the other characters did, and when I was seeing people drawing people like Sasha and Melanie and Tim as white way more when in my mind there was no reason to assume they were white. On an emotional level I guess I think either there’s Fanon As Lore, or there’s no fanon (and I prefer the latter) and my discomfort came from the place that the one character I absolutely saw as coded as white in the core cast had this one really specific Ambiguously Brown Fanon Look (which from what I’d seen at the time didn’t seem to be like...backed with anything or coming from any personal interpretation for most of the white fans I was seeing on like Twitter and Tumblr) but white headcanons are everywhere for characters like Melanie or Sasha or Georgie, who seemed to me to be unambiguously people of colour, or characters like Tim or Martin (who could perfectly reasonably be people of colour and who I hc as Rroma and biracial respectively)? I don’t know, it’s difficult to express, but I find it frustrating.

Gift #14: Colorblind
Gift for @forestwulf
Prompt: Intrulogical Soulmate AU.
Logan massaged his temples as the nightclub music pounded in his ears, “I don’t know why you insist on coming here.”
“It’s twinks drink free night,” Patton said, sipping his appletini.
“You stopped being a twink ten years ago,” Logan muttered.
Patton sighed, “I’m going to ignore that because you’re my brother and I love you. Speaking of love-”
“Don’t,” Logan said. “Not this again.”
“Listen to me,” Patton said. “I’m worried about you, Logan. I know you’re a little robot and you don’t need romance in your life or any friends but-”
        “I have friends,” Logan said.
“But,” Patton said. “You’re thirty years old and it’s starting to make mom sad on the holidays. When I met Ethan, it wasn’t sitting around at home and moping. I mean how long has it been since you were touched by another human being?”
“Soulmates,” Logan sighed. “Don’t start, Pat. I’ll gouge my eye out with this tiny umbrella.”
Patton rolled his eyes, “Logan it’s not just nonsense; it’s science! Just because you think you’re some kind of lone wolf doesn’t mean you don’t have a soulmate. Your eyes wouldn’t be grey if you weren’t still waiting for your person. So you can deny it all you want. It won’t change the fact that they’re waiting.”
“I don’t have time for a soulmate, Pat. You and Ethan just work better; you have time to be in love and he’s patient enough to deal with… you.”
Patton faked an offended gasp, “Just for that I’m not getting you a free drink next round! But you’re right, Ethan is perfect. However-”
         “There is no however.”
”However,” Patton continued. “It doesn’t mean that there isn’t someone out there who’s just as patient with your bullshit as Ethan is with mine. Now look you made me swear. I hope you’re happy.”
“I think the three appletinis made you swear,” Logan said. “Don’t you have work tomorrow?”
“Actually I’m going out of town in two days with the girls so they gave me time off.”
“Out of town? That’s this week?” Logan asked.
Patton finished his drink, “I love how much you listen when I talk. The pandas are being moved to the zoo in Atlanta so their enclosure can be remodeled and we’re hoping to get some breeding done while we’re out there. That’s why I told you that you have to take mom to the optometrist on Monday. If you forget that, Logan-”
“Right right,” Logan said. “No I’ll remember it’s… it’s in my phone.” He looked at his empty glass of whiskey but pushed it aside, deciding he’d better stay sober, “So what’s Ethan thinking about this longterm separation?”
Patton snorted, “One of his retics laid a ton of eggs and she bit his face when he was pulling the clutch. Now he’s walking around like Crocodile Dundee. Plus the whole clutch is viable so we’re looking at a lot of new snakes to add to the national program. He’s in talks with a zoo in Taiwan too about some bloodline trades. It’s really annoying sometimes. He gets dozens of babies a season and I’m lucky if I’ll see more than two or three in my career.”
“Well you chose the pandas,” Logan said.
“I’ll have you know the pandas chose me,” Patton said. “You want another drink?”
“Nah, I’ll drive you home,” Logan said. “Go flirt with the bartender and see if he’ll pretend to think you’re young some more.”
Patton laughed as he slid out of his seat, walking over to the bar. On the dancefloor Logan saw a small group of students, a few of which he recognized—one in particular a large pain in his ass. Remus Prince, Quarterback of the university football team and well-known idiot. Logan wished Remus was the typical jock idiot, uncaring and arrogant, one he could easily fail without a second thought, but Remus was bound and determined to make up for his own shortcomings with hard work and extra credit. It meant that half of Logan’s office hours were spent patiently explaining things to Remus again and again, and accepting an outlandish amount of extra credit work.
And—even more annoyingly—through it all Remus was cheerful, friendly and actually interested in what Logan had to say. Worse still, Remus was a senior, only four years younger than Logan who was the baby of the science department and didn’t he just hate that little nickname? Remus was like a peer, but worse, a jock, the kind of person that would have made Logan’s life miserable if they’d ever walked the same halls together as students. The revelation that Remus was gay was… interesting? No, not interesting. He’s a student and you don’t care. Logan rubbed his eyes and sighed, jumping when Patton returned with two appletinis. He sat down and stared at his brother matter-of-factly, “Guess how much these cost me?”
Logan raised an eyebrow and couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at his lips, “How are we related?”
Patton was a lot heavier than he looked when he needed to be carried, and Logan struggled up the stairs to the door of the apartment, knocking on the door. It was a cute place, all brick and right on the street, divided in half horizontally to make a duplex, but it was roomy and it was nice for two people on zookeeper salary; it was inexpensive—for Florida. Ethan opened the door and Logan gasped, “Ethan, your face!”
Ethan did smile, and there was more than a little pride in it, “Don’t worry. She hit above and below my eye but the doc said to keep a full dressing on it at night so I don’t rub anything off. He cool?”
“Vodka drunk,” Logan said, hauling Patton inside and laying him on the couch. “Not too bad but I told him I’d stay sober and I think he needed to drink off some stress.”
“The move, yeah,” Ethan said, following Logan back to the door. “And my face. He’s not really loving how many times I take the bandage off to show people but it’s my first big tag! You wanna see the pictures from the ER?”
“Gosh I’d love to but I have class in the morning so-”
“Ethan!” Patton called from the livingroom, “Come sex me up, Mr. Snake Whisperer!”
“Good luck with that,” Logan said. “Tell him to call me when he’s less obnoxious.”
“Will do,” Ethan said. “Bye Logan.”
Logan snorted when Patton called again and started down the stairs, “Good luck!”
Logan looked at himself in the mirror after taking out his contacts and smiled at his grey eyes; grey was distinguished, and he didn’t mind having a constant reminder—for himself and others—that he was beyond all of this soulmate nonsense. He was a lone wolf, just like Patton said, and his true love was forensic anthropology—or biology, as he was currently teaching. His application was top in line for the anthropology department, however, and he had consulted a time or two on actual cases. So, despite Patton’s—and his mother’s—insistence that his life was somehow incomplete, Logan couldn’t be happier. He turned off the bathroom light and crawled into bed, thinking back over his tasks for the day, all of which he’d completed before he ever set foot inside the gay bar with his brother. It was the same way he lulled himself to sleep every night, assured of all of his accomplishments, large and small, and how every day was a blank slate.
Sleep came quick for him, thanks to the single glass of whiskey and the exhaustion of dealing with his drunk brother—and his sober brother-in-law. His dreams were blurry and immemorable until suddenly his vision was filled with green. There were calloused hands on his skin, warm lips on his cheek and breath in his ear, and he was held against a solid body with a grip that was surprisingly strong. He closed his eyes and still all he could see was green.
Logan gasped and sat up, checking the clock and scowling; it was still the middle of the night and he was baffled by the strange dream and irredeemably hard. He sighed heavily and climbed out of bed, heading back into the bathroom and turning the shower to cold, stripping off his pajamas. Who the hell did he know that was associated with green, anyway? He didn’t even like the color green, his favorite color was indigo, far from the blinding lime he’d been accosted with in his dream. Any thoughts of the dream went screaming from his mind when he stepped into the water; his chest tightened and he exhaled involuntarily, “F-fuck!”
He tightened his hands into fists and endured the water, somehow preferring cold-induced heart palpitations to ward off an unwanted erection than perhaps the more obvious—and less miserable—solution. It was easier to be stubborn and miserable than to admit—and revel in—the fact that something had gotten him going, and that it had to be the dream. Whiskey wasn’t exactly known for facilitating physical arousal, and he’d barely had enough to taste in the first place.
“Morning!” Remus announced as he knocked on the open office door.
“Good morning,” Logan said, “Come in, Mr. Prince.” He cleared away the end of his desk where Remus usually worked and stacked up the papers elsewhere. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Remus laughed, his cheeks a bit pink; Logan wondered if he was getting a cold—and how much that would panic the other professors about the state of the football team. He took a sip of his coffee as he sat down. Remus scratched the back of his neck, “Well I have the three essays to turn in, and I did the makeup dissection test with Professor Picane’s Zoological Anatomy class… the uh… feral pig?”
“Fetal pig,” Logan said, putting his coffee cup aside. “He sent your scores up to me. Good work. You got everything right except for the microscope work. We’re still struggling with cellular identification. I spoke with Emile and he said you actually seemed to have issues where things were similarly colored, so I took the liberty of emailing you some color-blind tests. I’m also inviting you to come in during my freshman course tomorrow. I use different dyes in my slides and I think you’ll benefit from it.”
“Great!” Remus said. “You really go above and beyond to help me, Professor Heart. I um… well, thank you so much.”
Logan crossed his legs, leaning back in his chair, “You know, Remus, I think you’ve got a lot of potential, and I think you’ve been pushed through classes due to your athletic prowess—to your detriment. I really want to help you understand that you’re not lacking in intelligence, you understand. You’ve got the answers, we’ve just had to learn how to get to them, right?”
“Right,” Remus said, ducking his head shyly. “You’re always right.”
“Now, with these three essays and with you making up the microscope work tomorrow, there’s no need for anymore extra credit work. You’ve got this, Mr. Prince. All you have to do is attend all of the lectures and you’ll be on track for a strong grade in this class. Do you feel like you need any more help?”
Remus hesitated, “I  mean… you’ve done so much. I know you’ve basically changed my life, and how I feel about science—school in general! I um… I guess if I need anything I’ll just schedule a day before finals. If you think I can do it, I think I can do it.”
Logan smiled, “Very good, Remus. You’ve got this.”
Remus set the three essays down on the empty part of the desk and looked over them, “I can’t believe this is it, you know? I’m going to graduate in less than a month.”
“Another year on the books,” Logan said. “Wait until you’re my age.”
“You’re not old,” Remus said. “You’re still in your twenties too. Oh!” He picked up his backpack and dug through it, pulling out a small cardboard box. He set it on the desk. “I know your real interest is anthropology, like the cop kind, and I um… well, my dad works in the big museum uptown. They got a few of these and they gave my dad two of them.”
Logan took the box and opened it, raising an eyebrow as he took out a human skull, obviously prepared and preserved professionally. “This is a nicely intact specimen. You’re certain this is alright?”
“Yeah my dad said he’d rather it go to somebody who wants it than just gather dust in our basement or the museum’s basement. Oh they said it had uh… crouton disease?”
“Crouzon Disease,” Logan said, standing up. “Hyperostosis Frontalis Interna, very interesting. Thank you Remus this is incredibly thoughtful.”
Remus watched Logan put the skull in a central place on his shelf of books and specimens; it looked good, but Remus wasn’t really paying attention to the skull, especially when Logan turned and gave him a smile, extending his hand. Remus jumped up and shook it eagerly, “Thank you again, professor. You’re my hero. You’re especially my parents’ hero.”
Logan chuckled, and the touch was mildly electric, probably static, but it made Logan shiver, “You’re the hero, Mr. Prince. Remember that, hard work got you this far, and it’ll take you wherever you want to go.”
Remus nodded, slowly releasing Logan’s hand and stepping back to grab his backpack. “Well, see you in class tomorrow! Eight, right?”
“Right,” Logan said. “And don’t forget the possibility of a pop quiz tomorrow in your actual class.”
“Possibility,” Remus chuckled. “Good one, Professor Heart. See you then.”
Logan watched him go and sighed, turning to admire the skull, a warmth blooming in his chest he’d never really felt before. It really was a nice skull, he supposed.
Logan drove home with that feeling intact, almost floating into the elevator and riding it up to his floor. After making it down the hallway, and the obligatory avoidance of his neighbor’s eyes, he stepped into his apartment and locked the door behind him. He felt bone-deep exhausted—probably from the dream-cursed night before—and he went straight to the bathroom to take out his contacts. Once his contacts were safely back in their saline baths, he brushed his teeth, grabbing his glasses off of the vanity and putting them on. He admired his eyes—his green eyes. Logan gasped and squeezed his eyes closed, opening them again, still green. He took off his glasses, and his reflection was blurry, but clearly green eyes stared back at him. The warmth in his chest suddenly became a sharp icicle, and he realized. Green, Remus Prince. “Fuck!” Logan shouted, turning off the light and rushing out to his bedroom. He sat on the bed and pulled his cellphone out of his pocket, dialing his brother.
The phone rang several times, and went to voicemail; Logan swore again and dialed the home phone, “Come on Pat come on.”
         “Hey Logan! What’s up?”
“Ethan? Oh, is Pat… oh shit.”
“Alabama,” Ethan said. “Yeah. You ok?”
“No, not at all… oh god. Can we talk? Like do you have time?” Logan stood up, pacing around the bed. “I have… an awkward situation.”
         “You? I don’t believe it.”
Logan sighed and Ethan laughed, “I’d like to be serious with you for a moment.”
“Of course,” Ethan said. “Go ahead.”
“When you realized you were Patton’s soulmate, was there a feeling?”
“Hm,” Ethan said. “Actually, yes. I thought I had heartburn, actually. Just like this warmth in my chest? It sounds a bit stereotypical but yeah. I felt warm. That night when I was washing my face I realized my eyes had changed. You doing a study?”
“Um… no,” Logan admitted. “My eyes are green.”
“Oh! Oh my god! Did you tell your mom?”
“Please, Ethan. I have only told you.”
“Do you know who it is?” Ethan asked. “Any clue?”
“One of my students,” Logan said. “The… football player.”
“Oh yeah I remember Patton mentioning him, the stupid one right?”
Logan bristled, “He isn’t stupid. He’s…” He sighed, rubbing his temple, “Well, thank you Ethan. You’ve answered my question.”
“Text Pat,” Ethan said. “He’ll lose his shit.”
         “Goodnight, Ethan,” Logan said.
Logan hung up and set his phone on the nightstand before undressing, pulling on a pair of pajama pants and climbing into bed. He turned off the lamp and pulled the blanket over his head, willing himself to sink into the earth.
The following morning’s class was a blur of barely-controlled panic and dread, but luckily Remus barely even spared him a glance, intent on taking and passing his cellular identification exam. Logan pretended to grade papers when Remus came up to his desk, and his heart surged like it had, warming to Remus like a rock in the sun, “See you in class.”
Logan gave a noncommittal sound, and Remus left the classroom, allowing Logan to finally breathe. Ignoring this wasn’t going to be easy, and Logan was already getting frantic texts from his brother demanding an explanation. Logan briefly wondered how hard it would be to vanish without changing universities. The worst part, without question, was how badly he wanted Remus to touch him, even just a brush of his hand. His body was like a magnet and his hands were shaking even though their closeness had been brief. At least his upcoming class was taking a pop quiz, and they were to clear out as soon as answers were submitted.
Logan remained more or less glued to the desk during the hour between classes, grading the microscope work—Remus hadn’t missed a single slide, so Picane’s catch on the colorblindness had been spot on. Logan had felt a stab of jealousy, absurd as it was, that he hadn’t realized it sooner, first, because Remus was his soulmate—his.
“Mine,” Logan muttered to himself, then his face heated up when he realized what he’d said, and he looked down to realize he’d written it on Remus’ exam answers. Quickly scratching it out he pushed the test aside and lowered his face to the desk. “What a nightmare.”
         “What’s a nightmare, Mr. Heart?”
Logan looked up to see his first student sliding into her desk, and he forced a chuckle, “The state of the economy in nineteenth century Luxembourg.” He stood up and began writing on the board.
“Will that be on the final?” another student asked. The classroom had started filling up.
“Not unless I’ve ever written it on this board,” Logan said. “We start final prep next week, don’t forget.”
He finished filling out the board as the rest of his students filed in, and once his watch beeped cheerily that class had started, he heard a voice pick up behind him, the same girl from before, “Is that your favorite tie, Mr. Heart? You wear it a lot.”
“It’s my favorite color,” Logan said without turning around. “As charming as the distraction is, I haven’t forgotten the pop quiz.” He turned around and Remus was staring at him, mouth open in shock. On either side of him, his linebacker buddies were looking at one another, and Logan realized his mistake in revealing his favorite color—because he knew better than anyone what color Remus’ eyes must be now. Wincing, he adjusted his glasses, “Alright, please take out a clean sheet of paper and answer the questions I’ve written on the board. When you’re finished please leave them up here and you may go.”
Logan sat at his desk and pretended to be working, jumping when the first student turned in their quiz, but calmed and kept his eyes down as the steady stream of quizzes landed on his desk. He was starting to feel safe when most of his students had gone, and he made the mistake of looking up when a loud pair of sneakers stopped at his desk. The room was empty, and Remus Prince was standing at his desk, quiz in his hand. He set it down with the others and shoved his hands in his pockets, “Your eyes are green. I never noticed.”
Logan paled and stared up at Remus, “I um… it’s recent.”
Remus nodded, “Me too, indigo, right? It’s a weird blue for eyes. My brother said they look like Liz Taylor whoever that is.”
Logan let out a nervous little laugh, looking down at the paper he’d been doodling on only to realize he’d been writing the word mine over and over, “Yeah. She had um… dark eyes. So I suppose you’ve met your soulmate then, congratulations, Mr. Prince.”
Remus looked around and then back at Logan, “You’re going to pretend it isn’t you?”
Logan was feeling very much like a deer in the headlights, but at the same time heat was playing in his chest. He pushed his chair back and stood up, tensing when Remus reached to grab his wrist, “I’m not-” Logan tried to pull away but Remus shook his head, “I’m not pretending anything I… damn it. Damn it I’m afraid, ok? You’re a student!”
“Not for long! Like two weeks from now I’m taking the final, and unless I stop showing up entirely, there’s no way I’m failing. I did the math which I know will impress you because I’m such an idiot.”
“Mr. Prince,” Logan said, then sighed. “Remus… is this even something you want? A relationship dictated by some… some system we don’t even understand? By colors and chance and… what, fate? You want to let the universe stick you with someone… someone like me?”
Remus laughed and released Logan, covering his face with his hands, “You don’t fucking get it, do you? You really don’t.”
Logan wrapped his arms around himself, blushing and adjusting his glasses, “Don’t get what?”
“I have wanted you since before I started in this class!” Remus said. “My brother, the attention whore? He had me come here last semester to pick up a paper for him, remember? If it was just fate shoving us together it would have happened then… but it didn’t. I thought you were hot, so I signed up for your class because I figured I’d cheat my way through and have a hot prof to stare at right?”
         “Hot?”
“Just let me finish,” Remus said. “When I came in here and sat down at that desk and I listened to you read the syllabus… and all of your weird bone jokes and that thing about the swamp mummy?”
“Bog bodies, the Tollund Man, yes,” Logan said. “You remember that?”
“Yeah because you cared, like you actually cared about it. You’re not just here because you couldn’t get a career and you’re not just here to waste time. You really care about what you’re teaching us, and I know you’re trying to switch departments but whatever, you know what I mean… there’s a lot of passion there and it made me give a shit. It took me forty-five minutes to fall in love with your stupid class, and maybe two or three classes to fall in love with you… but still it didn’t happen. Because it didn’t happen until you fell in love with me.”
Logan was silent as he stared at Remus, his mouth hanging open; he took a sharp breath, shoving his hands in his pockets, “Jesus.”
“Well? Am I right?” Remus said, tears welling up in his eyes. “It’s the mustache right? My friends told me that’s the reason you didn’t tell me. Because you hate it. I don’t even care. I’ll shave it off, ok? I don’t care if it’s good luck I-”
Logan crossed the short distance between them and kissed Remus, cutting him off. Remus grabbed Logan’s collar and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. Logan’s mind spun, and his knees went weak. Remus had no trouble holding him up, and when they finally broke the kiss, Logan smiled sheepishly. “I don’t hate the mustache, as much as I wish I did. I really don’t.”
Remus buried his face against Logan’s shoulder and laughed, “Great because I really need to keep it if I’m going to get drafted. Three of the NFL scouts commented on it.”
“Yes I’m sure you’ll bring back the seventies mustache. Your parents will be ecstatic.”
“Yeah… so um… are we dating?”
“No,” Logan said, then off Remus’ look he hurried to elaborate. “Not until you pass this class of your own merit. Like you said, it’s no big deal and then, the second your final grade is logged in the university database… we can date.”
Remus smiled, smoothing down Logan’s shirt as he stepped back, “Right, cool um… hey I should probably go then, right? Got studying to do. Bye teach.”
“Mr. Prince,” Logan said, sinking back down into his seat once Remus was gone.
It was going to be a long couple of weeks.

Gotta love picture day...and seeing as I haven’t wanted to make much of anything lately, this was kind of nice to just sit back and do.
First up we got some new ones:
Aiden Taylor - the younger brother of Michelle and Noah Walker, Aiden was removed from the parental home when he was either 2 or 4, I’m not entirely sure which just yet. Following one of Noah’s fits in a store and the elder Walker’s reaction to it, social services were brought to the home. Noah was removed as well, but he was, for some reason, released back into their custody. Along the same line, Mr and Mrs. Walker never came to pick up their other son and Aiden was processed into the system. He was in and out of orphanages around New York and moved around quite a bit until he was 7 and was finally adopted by the Taylors. Madeline Taylor fell in love with him immediately and after meeting Mr. Taylor, Aiden went home pretty quickly as a foster and around his 9th birthday he received the signed adoption papers in one of his cards. The Taylors are both somewhat magically inclined, Madeline is involved in a coven in the city that actually does some pretty good magic but growing up exposed to it, Aiden has picked up some natural talents and eventually joined his mothers’ coven. His father believes in magic but doesn’t practice it, he says he grew out of it but believes fully his wife possesses “gifts”. Aiden works at 13th Moon Emporium near Central Park with Logan, Grayson and a young woman he has a crush on but has somewhat slid into the friend zone with. (His mentality on that is at least she’ll be in his life) Aiden has a piercing in his left eyebrow and apparently has his tongue pierced too, he plays with the ball between his teeth when he’s bored.
Grayson Lewis - Grayson pops into my head every time I’m packing orders and this time he happened to do it and bring Aiden into my head with him. Anyhoo..the most I know about him is that he usually packs the monthly spell boxes with Aiden, lives in an apartment above the store and has known Logan longer than most people. He mainly manages what Logan refers to as the Herb Bar, where most spell ingredients are on display in large glass jars (like the ones that used to have candy in them)
Ivar - Ish’kar and Enid’s 2nd son. His mother was under the negative affects of...I wanna say another shaman’s cure, when she was pregnant and subsequently gave birth to Ivar, who’s legs seemed to have no bones at all. The deformity never got any better and his parents were left with a tough decision. In meeting the ancient and rare Owlwitch, Ornecka, they were told that Ivar would one day fly on darkened wings beside the Queen of the Black Moon. Ish’kar had already professed to his wife that he couldn’t bring himself to kill his second son, whether the boy would ever be the same as any other member of his family, he could still pass on his father’s blood and if he’s to play a part in the betterment of their people, who was he to deny the will of their gods? Because of his inability to walk, Ivar’s upper body is incredibly strong and he has even become incredibly skilled in climbing trees and using a bow. His other siblings will occasionally take him on their hunting trips. His uncle, Folke, made him a special set of bracers for his legs, to make them easier to keep together and move as one. He had tried walking but an infection took control of one of his legs every time he attempted it and after nearly losing him to a fever, his mother forbade him to continue to try. When Norelia brings Ish’kar and his people beyond the Wall, some are taken to the hatchery to see if they have the gift. Ivar was with his father, mother and younger sister as they were seeing if any of the dragons responded to her. Instead, a massive black and red dragon approached Ivar and allowed him to pull himself onto her back.
Arthur Powell - Arthur likes this one quite a bit better, it’s more carefree...though one of the extra ones might also become his picture, I haven’t completely decided. A few things I’ve learned about Arthur in the last few days: He is an artist, painting, sculpting and even making his own open face dollhouses, furniture and ball jointed dolls for them.  He finds focusing on small stitches for pillows or painting miniature banisters for stairs calming and it helps him control his hysterical reactions. He’d gotten into the dollhouses when his dad had bought one for Frankie’s 8th birthday and had Arthur help him put it together. He was also a theater major at Tulane University and took a handful of art classes as well. During his first performance as Billy Flynn in the university’s presentation of Chicago, his disorder nearly ruined the tap dancing/courtroom scene, as he had started laughing in the middle of his tap solo. Nearly doubled over with it, he had managed to stop himself and without really knowing what to do, he’d started dancing the whole routine again. The director told him most people seemed to think it was part of the performance, likening it to Billy mocking the “judges” by laughing about how stupid they were. It worked and had given Arthur a little more confidence. He has tried several times to live alone but for some reason it never seems to work out for him and he ultimately ends up going back to the Home he lives in down in the French Quarter. The last time he tries, he begins having issues due to Frankie moving out of New Orleans and all the way to New York by way of California. Arthur ends up moving to New York as well.
James Flint - James is actually Captain Flint from the Golden Age of Piracy (Sara’s story) as well as Prince John in England and in ancient Greece he was a sheep herder named Ionnes. Becoming one of Sara’s protectors after her escape from the Viking era, Ionnes takes her as far as he is able in trying to ultimately get her home. He is eventually “killed” by a warrior spear thrown by Ares himself, though when he meets with the Gods he tells Gaia how much traveling with Sara had come to mean to him and if he was able, he wanted to be something to her. He had a tumultuous several 1000 years, attempting to grow accustomed to his now more permanent place in the world that it drove him a little crazy, causing him to take over the Prince John persona in the middle ages in England. The real Prince was actually murdered somewhere on the road by the same group he attempted to hire to kill his brother, the King, so he could take over. Ionnes remembered who he was and why he was even in this time when Sara actually stabbed him following his killing of her husband, Guy. Begging for forgiveness from the Gods he gets a second chance as James Flint. As Flint, he generally manages to succeed in helping Sara, he also ends up showing up in California as well, as a heart surgeon. One thing about Ionnes/Flint that has actually stuck with him throughout his countless years is being gay. (He wants someone that looks like this:
Tumblr media
)
John Knox - Lorelei’s brother, I keep thinking they’re twins but John is actually older than her by a couple of years. The two of them have been singing together since Lori could sing, and before that he used to play guitar for their grandfather. John has type 2 diabetes, though it’s pretty well managed, he generally takes a pill but has emergency needles and insulin if he needs it.
Zach Shields - Zach is a little complicated. He’s married to a sweet, special young woman named Clare and works as a professional landscaper but...he’s also hell on wheels in a motorcycle and sells drugs on the side. He and Gabriel have a relationship behind Ben and Clare’s back.
New guy 1 is a professor at Northwestern University in Chicago, he occasionally works with Emma Marcone in the Art History department. He also teaches anthropology and a specialty class that I can’t think of right now.
Picture 2: might be used for Arthur, I’m not sure yet

hi so i haven’t made any real posts in a while bc i haven’t really been writing that much but i wanted to just post SOMETHING for y’all to interact with
anyway, if you don’t know, i have a youtube channel and i’ve been watching (almost) every movie that chris evans is in because i love him and reviewing them for my channel and i thought i’d give a rundown of the movies i’ve seen so far (including ones i haven’t rewatched for the channel yet because i’m not gonna link to the videos - if you really want to watch, message me) so maybe you could decide which ones are worth your time and/or money 😂
for this, i’ll give a brief description, my general thoughts, and a score from 1-10 (1 being unwatchable and 10 being PEAK cinema)
i’m keeping things very light on spoilers, meaning there might be one or two overall but not for every movie.
so here we go:
The Newcomers (2000) - some indie movie with no theatrical release about a family that moves from boston to vermont because of money troubles. chris is in it for like 5 minutes and he’s honestly the second best part (second to a dog only). 3/10, mostly boring but not offensive.
Not Another Teen Movie (2001) - i feel like everyone has seen this. it’s a spoof of 80′s and 90′s teen movies (namely she’s all that and cruel intentions). chris plays the main love interest and he’s definitely funny enough to pull off the part but it’s not really my thing. 4/10.
The Perfect Score (2004) - this is the first time chris and sc*rj* worked together. 6 high school kids fail the SATs so instead of retaking them, they sneak into a government building and steal the answers. it’s an mtv movie and it’s...fine? not great, not special, but...very early aughts mtv for sure. 4/10
Cellular (2004) - an action flick where chris plays a regular dude who gets a call from a woman who’s been kidnapped, and then has to keep communications up with her in order to save her and take down some corrupt cops. surprisingly funny, i had a great time watching, would recommend! 7/10
Fierce People (2005) - i think this was another indie movie without a theatrical release. based on a book that, from the reviews of both, is identical, i think because the author of the book was also the screenplay writer. and that’s probably why this movie sucked. bby anton yelchin (rip) gets caught scoring drugs for his mom, and because she has connections to this super rich dude, they end up going to live in new jersey with his weirdass family instead of bby anton going to jail. chris’s character is not who you think he is. content warnings for drugs, rape, and murder. overall boring, not what it thinks it is, 4/10
Fantastic Four (2005) - okay everyone’s seen these. i actually hate both of these FF movies, but chris as johnny storm is the only shinning light in either. reed is the WORST and sue is treated like eye candy. 4/10 for johnny storm alone.
London (2005) - literally the worst movie i have ever seen. i hate london. also an indie movie, very misogynistic, very pretentious and self-important. lonely emo boy does drugs with random people in a bathroom at a party he was not invited to INTENTIONALLY, in the hopes that he will win over his ex girlfriend, who he repeatedly emotionally abused while they were together, even though the party is literally in honor of her moving across the country. and she didn’t want him there. please never, ever bother watching london and talking about it online - fuckbois will attempt to tell you that you know nothing repeatedly. 1/10, worst film ever made.
TMNT (2007) - does this need an introduction? chris plays casey, but the movie’s really about the turtles. honestly the writing kind of relies on you knowing a lot about the turtle lore and overall it’s a boring but ultimately harmless film. it’s just really not worth your time. 2/10
Sunshine (2007) - ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN, I HAVE NOT  STOPPED THINKING ABOUT SUNSHINE IN OVER A YEAR. 8 astronauts are on a mission to ignite a nuclear bomb into the dying heart of our sun. but it’s a space film so shit goes wrong and, one by one, they start dying. very tense, very sad. the biggest complaint all around is that the first 2/3s of the movie are one genre and the last 3rd is a completely different movie, and yet it’s STILL amazing. please watch (if you can handle a space thriller)! 8/10
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) - a very bad follow up to a very bad origin movie. not even andre braugher could save this one. reed is really mean to johnny for no reason and i hate his guts. 3/10
The Nanny Diaries (2007) - second time appearing alongside sc*rj*. she’s the main character. an anthropology student takes on a nannying job for an upperclass family in new york, but the job ends up being more than she bargained for. chris plays harvard hottie, her upstairs neighbor who is THE BEST BOY. i loved this movie. 8/10
Battle for Terra (2007) - a very weird but very good animated movie about humans attempting to colonize an alien planet because we were stupid enough to destroy earth, venus, and mars. lots of big names on the cast list for a movie that not many people saw, but it goes ham in the “fuck colonizers” theme. overall, a surprising joy. 6.5/10
Street Kings (2008) - well this was directed by david ayer so my friend and i went into this with very low expectations and it didn’t even meet that bar. keanu reeves plays a sad and angry corrupt cop who almost kind of gets framed for killing another cop, and then spends a good chunk of the runtime just hunting down other corrupt cops without doing anything about his own corruption. it’s copaganda, but very bad copaganda. also chris dies. fuck this movie, don’t waste your time. this is another one where the fanboys will come for you if you say a bad thing about it on the internet, 2/10
The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (2008) - another indie that apparently caught the eye of kevin fiege? i don’t really know why because chris’s character is very bland and the movie overall is nothing special. tennessee williams wrote the screenplay before he died in the 80′s and then this was made and nothing about it was changed. it’s basically straight people in the 20′s in the south being weird and rude. a rich girl pays a hot poor boy to escort her to parties after a huge scandal was caused by her father. she loves the poor boy but he doesn’t return the feelings and everyone’s sad, dying, or mean. skip it, honestly. 4/10
Push (2009) - honestly, an underrated movie that so often gets shit on because of x-men. push is so good! a telekinetic man meets a young girl who can see the future, who tells him that if he helps her find her mom, they’ll also come into $6 million. they run into his ex and the government department trying to control people with powers, and shit ensues. chris’s chemistry with dakota fanning as big brother/little sister is adorable and i need more people to talk about it. 8/10, very worth your time.
The Losers (2010) - apparently went up against some other star-studded action flick with a similar plot at the time of release and suffered for it, but other than that, this is a fun romp with lots of character. a team of militiamen are framed for an international scandal and forced to go underground until a mysterious woman helps them exact revenge on the billionaire who framed them so they can go back to their families. chris plays one of the secondary characters and he’s PERFECT. best character in the whole movie! you’ve probably seen the “don’t stop believing”/”lethal killing machine” scene around tumblr before - that’s just how his character is the whole movie and it’s great. definitely recommend! 7/10
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) - we’ve all seen it. lucas lee is the best. there are lots of problems in the word choice and some of the moral quandaries but overall, an enjoyable ode to videogames and comic books. 6.5/10
Puncture (2011) - once again, an indie film with very little theatrical release. WHOOOH though. this movie. SO GOOD! two personal injury lawyers take on a case when a nurse is accidentally pricked on the job and contracts AIDS. they take on a huge pharmaceutical supply company in the hopes of manufacturing and creating a legal standard for using safety needles to protect frontline medical workers, all while chris’s character is dealing with being an addict. based on a true story, honestly   one of chris’s best performances (and that’s across the board). you can  rent it cheap from youtube and it’s totally worth it. 7.5/10
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - i mean. it’s cap. honestly this movie feels a little long even though it’s not. overall it’s a good, enjoyable movie and watching it all the way through reminded me of why bucky was so important. 7/10
What's Your Number? (2011) - okay honestly i love this movie? a woman is slutshamed by her sister’s friends and then embarks on a journey through her past relationships to find her soulmate, only to realize that it doesn’t matter how many men she’s slept with because the right one really won’t give a damn and neither should she. everyone’s seen naked collin around tumblr. he’s a good boy. mostly. 7/10
The Avengers (2012) - so i can appreciate that this was like THE event movie of the summer of 2012 but it is LONG and there’s still so much spy shit i don’t understand. my friends and i also think that j*ss wh*d*n oversimplifies most of the characters, and ultimately the writing isn’t super strong. the performances are, for sure, but it’s still not as great of a movie as i thought it was when i was a senior in high school. 7/10
The Iceman (2012) - also an indie? based on a true story. a man (played by michael shannon) is recruited by the mob to be a hitman, and then something happens where they don’t want to pay him or something, so he starts doing a shady job with another hitman (played by chris) to support his family. overall it’s a boring film but michael and chris were both really good! watch it if you like dark mob movies, michael shannon, or winona ryder. 3/10
Snowpiercer (2013) - this movie, no pun intended, is a RIDE. poor people at the back of a train containing the last living human beings revolt against the bourgeoise. everyone’s dirty and tired and hungry. weird shit happens, but ultimately, this was SO worth the watch (and the money i spent on the blu-ray)!  7/10
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - still my favorite cap movie. excellent characterization, maybe the only time i cared about natasha. the plot should be an avengers movie given that shield is a team concern, but i will stand by the winter soldier aspect of this movie til i die. 8/10
Before We Go (2014) - an indie movie that chris directed (his directorial debut)! it’s...cute, i guess. it’s not harmful in any way, but also not special in any way. flustered woman misses her train, cute musician in the station offers to help her navigate NYC. they talk about feelings and their pasts and what they’re running from and toward. it’s fine. 6/10
Playing It Cool (2014) - indie? i don’t know?? screenplay writer (chris) wants to write action films but keeps getting hired to write romcoms, then he finds himself IN a romcom. it’s okay. some people think it’s terribly misogynistic which i didn’t find it to be, but it’s also just...kinda bland. 4/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) - my least favorite avengers movie. i genuinely hate how ultron was handled and this movie has never once made me sympathize with the maximoffs. except for when steve defends their choice to allow experimentation to be done so they could defend their country. uh the party at the beginning is the best part, full stop. 3/10
Captain America: Civil War (2016) - this isn’t a cap film. he has no character growth. this is an avengers film at best. i also take issue with how much of this movie is really just two movies forced into one. bucky gets the short end of the deal in the overall mcu and this is really where that starts. 5/10
Gifted (2017) - PLEASE. WATCH. GIFTED. a former philosophy professor gives up his career to raise his niece, but when his mother attempts to gain custody, he has to fight for the person he loves most in the world. one of the most heartfelt, genuine movies ever. chris and mckenna grace have SUCH good chemistry. bonus octavia spencer (also in snowpiercer). 10/10
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - probably my favorite avengers movie. great stakes. amazing acting. THE BEARD!!! 8/10
Knives Out (2019) - WHOOO BITCH. TOP TIER. ransom drysdale could do whatever he wants to me and normally, i don’t “date” villains. 9/10
Endgame (2019) - the lesser infinity war. i’m not a fan of time jumps and also hate fatphobia. thor was mistreated and i can’t forgive that.

black coffee [prologue]
Tumblr media
Rating: PG-13
Summary: neither calum nor isabelle wanted to be a teacher's assistant. more work, less pay, and no power; not the grad school experience either were hoping to have. but they're roped into teaching intro to public speaking and are handed all the responsibilities that go along with it. students, grades, classes, faculty meetings; but at least they have each other, right?
Word Count: 2.2k
“No.”
Dr. Bennett blinks, momentarily surprised by Isabelle’s blunt refusal, before he tries to hide his smile as he leans back in his chair and places his full attention on the girl in front of him. He raises an eyebrow at her, amused by the seeming lack of grace in her answer, and waits as she shakes her head. He watches her fidget with her pen, watches her take a deep breath and attempt to gather her thoughts, before she lifts her head and meets his gaze.
“Sorry,” Isabelle adds, cheeks tinted pink with embarrassment at her outburst. “I just, I thought I made it clear when I came in that I didn’t want to teach,” she explains as she glances down at the bright green notebook on her lap. She stares at the cover, still unopened, before she lifts her head once more. “I haven’t fully decided if I want to get my Ph.D. and while I appreciate the offer, I like my current assistantship. I really enjoy planning and coordinating events, that’s more in line with what I want to do after graduation. I mean, I’m seriously considering going into nonprofit work instead of sticking with academia. It just seems like I’d be taking on a lot for something I’m not really sure of and I’m just wondering what I get out of teaching, you know?”
Dr. Bennett did know this, the entire department knows of their most recent cohort’s lack of a desire to teach, but they’d all been hoping that the first year in the program would change their minds. However, judging by the look of despair on Isabelle’s face and the panic in her words, that hadn’t been the case at all. She seems even more sure of her unwillingness to teach now than she had been at orientation in August but he’d drawn the short straw and had been tasked with getting her agreement so he sighs and leans forward to rest his elbows on his desk.
“There’s a lot that you can do with teaching experience,” Dr. Bennett informs her with a slight shrug. “You’re wanting to do nonprofit work, right?” When Isabelle nods, he copies the action and continues, “Having that experience can help you program educational experiences. It can help you create curriculum for whatever field you go into to help educate the people you serve. Even if academia isn’t where you see yourself remaining, the experience can be useful in your future and it looks good on a resume. Having someone with your previous internships, your current assistantship, and then a year of teaching experience would be a dream. You’d be overqualified for pretty much any position you wanted.”
“Plus, if you teach and you like it, you don’t have to stay in higher ed. You can teach high school with a masters degree,” Abbey, Dr. Bennett’s advisee and Isabelle’s best friend in her cohort, tosses out. “You get a teaching certificate and you can teach speech or debate, maybe even rhetoric if the school is nice enough to have a rhetoric course. That’s what I’m thinking about doing.”
Isabelle bites her lip to keep from rolling her eyes at Abbey’s suggestion. She loves Abbey, she really does, but their situations are vastly different. Abbey had come in funded through the department and hadn’t had much of a choice in whether or not she would be teaching. For her, it was either accept the teaching position or pay for her second year out of pocket. Isabelle, however, has options.
The department didn’t want her when she came in. She’d begged them to consider her for at least a desk job but they’d apologized and instructed her to look elsewhere. They needed the funding for the Ph.D. students they had so she sent resume after resume to every open position she could find. She’d been offered several different assistantships around campus (one of which came without an interview because they liked her resume that much, they’d even emailed her earlier in the week to see if she’d made a decision about her second year yet), each of which was better suited to her future career goals than teaching so she wasn’t exactly bothered by the department’s focus on their Ph.D. students. Now, however, with so many of their Ph.D. students leaving and not enough faculty members to cover the intro courses, they’re getting desperate.
Her cohort (the students that came in with her in September) only had seven members, four masters students and three Ph.D. students. Each of the Ph.D. students has already agreed to teach classes the next semester (not like they had any choice if they wanted to be funded), one of the masters students has already agreed (Abbey also didn’t have much choice), another of the masters students wasn’t even considered because she raised so much hell about keeping her current assistantship (she’s funded through the department but her boss had even gone so far as to threaten to resign if they took her from him); that just leaves Isabelle and Calum, the only two not currently funded through the department.
She knows that Calum is currently across the hall getting the same offer from Dr. White and she knows that he’s attempting to do the same delicate dance that she is. He’s made it very clear that he’s not interested, either, and she understands why they’re trying so hard but she wishes they’d quit. She hates being put on the spot like this and she’s desperate for a way out of Dr. Bennett’s office. But she knows that she needs to stand her ground if she wants to avoid being put in front of a classroom full of bored freshmen so she wracks her brain for a way to respond.
“Do I still have to talk to Dr. Adams about this?” Isabelle finally asks as she notices Dr. Bennett and Abbey staring at her, waiting for her response. “To officially accept or decline?”
“Yes,” Dr. Bennett nods, “she’s still the interim department chair so she makes the official teaching decisions. She’s also your advisor so the classes we added to your schedule still need to be run by her. You also need to finalize your plan of study so I’d set up an appointment with her as soon as possible. She’ll be back in the office after spring break.”
Isabelle frowns at this before she releases a quiet sigh and nods. She doesn’t want to wait, she wants to get this over and done with, but she knows that this is the only way her declination will be accepted. “I’ll email her when I get home,” Isabelle promises as she grabs her backpack and stands from her chair. “Thank you for the help, Dr. Bennett. I’ll work on the abstract for my conference submission and email it to you when I finish.”
“No problem,” Dr. Bennett nods, a smile on his face. “I look forward to reading it. And I’m sorry that we haven’t been more proactive in talking to you about teaching but I’d appreciate it if you considered it. Even if you don’t go on to get your Ph.D. or stick with academia, I think you would make a fantastic teacher and that it would be beneficial for you.”
Isabelle doesn’t want to but she knows that she’s going to end up spending the next week and a half thinking about it. She knows that she’s going to agonize over this decision and annoy the living hell out of everyone in her life until her meeting with Dr. Adams. So, she nods. “I will,” she promises as she fishes her keys out of the pocket of her backpack, “I’ll see you in class, Dr. Bennett.”
Isabelle doesn’t look back as she exits Dr. Bennett’s office, doesn’t slow down until she’s left the second floor of the building, and only pauses on the first when she hears Calum call her name. She waits long enough for Calum to catch up with her and sighs when he falls into step beside her. The pair are quiet for a moment, each mulling over their respective meetings, before Calum glances over at her.
“Bennett tell you that you’re on the shortlist for teaching next year?” Calum asks as he opens the door for her.
“Yep,” she nods as she shoves her phone into her pocket. “Told me that I’d need to be in the teaching competency class and when I asked why, he looked confused and then embarrassed. It took him a minute to realize no one had seriously mentioned anything about it until that moment. It’s ironic to me that the communication department is the worst at communicating.”
“Why the fuck did we think getting our masters was a good idea?” he asks as he steps behind the building and pulls his cigarettes from the pocket of his jeans. “This whole process has been a fucking nightmare.”
Isabelle huffs an unamused laugh as she leans against the side of the building. “You’re telling me,” she sighs as she shakes her head when Calum offers her the pack. “I’m here because I had no fucking clue what I wanted to do with my life. Honestly, though, living with my mom while I figured it out seems like a better idea than this at this point. At least she tells me what she wants.”
Calum laughs at this before he shakes his head and frowns. “I still have no idea what I’m doing for classes next semester. Theory’s the only thing they’re offering that we haven’t taken,” he sighs before he takes a drag off his cigarette, “and it’s not even general theory, it’s rhetoric.”
“With Dr. Deets,” Isabelle reminds him, laughing when he grimaces. “Bennett told me I’m gonna have to go ahead and start my thesis hours, even though I don’t feel ready to. I’m taking a class out of department but I’m thinking about switching it to that qualitative methods course they’re offering in anthropology. I need it more than I need some fucking seminar that deals exclusively in busy work.”
“Let me know if you can take that one and I might join you,” Calum sighs as he kneels down to stub out his cigarette before he drops the butt in the garbage can. “I’m going qualitative for my thesis, too. Miles on your committee?”
“Yeah,” Isabelle nods, “I have the golden trio. Miles, Bennett, and Adams. How about you?”
“That’s looking like mine,” he nods as he runs his hand through his hair. “If I can ever getting a meeting with Adams to officially request her.”
“She’s supposed to be back in her office after spring break,” Isabelle informs him. “So, give it a month and maybe she’ll have a minute for you. D’you hear that she told Laura to fuck off, that she didn’t have time for her bullshit when she stopped to ask a question about her thesis?”
Calum frowns at this and shakes his head. “No,” he sighs, “but that doesn’t surprise me. Now that Watson’s leaving, do you think she’s gonna be the official chair?”
“Probably,” Isabelle sighs as she tugs her phone from her pocket. “I heard they haven’t had a lot of interest. Two interviews and neither were super impressive.”
“We’re fucked,” Calum groans and Isabelle nods. Calum watches as Isabelle checks her notifications and frowns when she holds the device up to him. He stares at the department group chat, the one that he never checks, and laughs at the message Abbey had just sent.
A picture of himself and Isabelle standing behind the building, deep in conversation, greets him along with the message, ’@Isabelle, @Calum; you guys plotting to burn down down the building down there?’
‘Thinking about it,’ Isabelle sends back quickly. ‘Save anything from the TA office that might be important to you.’
“I’m gonna go get some bubble tea and calm the fuck down,” Isabelle sighs as she locks her phone and shoves the device back into her pocket. “I might even run by the liquor store. Who knows, honestly?”
“Still not a coffee person?” Calum asks as he follows her toward the parking lot across from the building. “Not gonna go get a black coffee and drown your sorrows like some shitty drama?”
“I like to enjoy my caffeine, thanks,” Isabelle laughs. “Black coffee just seems like a punishment.”
“When they break us both down and get us to agree to teach, I’ll bring you a black coffee after your first class. You’ll need it.”
Isabelle grins at Calum’s promise and shakes her head. “I appreciate it, Cal,” she laughs. “But I don’t think I’ll be teaching. I want to keep my current assistantship. But if you end up teaching, I’ll bring you that black coffee.”
“You know, even if we don’t want to teach, I feel like we’ll both end up in front of a bunch of freshmen next semester.”
“I hate to say this,” Isabelle sighs, “but I feel like you’re right."
Author’s Note: Grad school is weird. It’s a different planet, tbh. Anyway, here’s the prologue for TA!Calum. Camp counselor!Calum is coming. I’m too stoked about both, sorry.

Non-tc related. A, how do you find the motivation/discipline to just do you work? As a senior, I’m finding it increasingly difficult. I know I’m gonna graduate but I’m paralyzed with fear of what comes after, which has made me stressed and has caused me to not want to do anything. Any advice?
I definitely struggled with this a lot this semester. That's why I took nearly a month off from Tumblr. I was overloading myself a bit and having a long commute wasn't helping. To the point where I had an emotional break down in my department chair's office. I never cry in front of people but I just couldn't control it. I reached a breaking point. I also struggle a bit with imposter syndrome and I'm not one to boast about my skills, abilities, or accomplishments. E and and my bosses think I'm crazy for selling myself short.
I finished applying to half of my graduate schools and I personally don't feel 100% about both of the paths I'm pursuing. It's horrifying and it honestly irritates me when I constantly hear professors or other people say "you'll figure it out eventually." Yes, I'll figure it out eventually and everything will fall to place (with a lot of hard work) but they're so hesitant to provide a direct and straightforward opinion. Since they're afraid to sway your views. They don't want to be responsible if you end up unhappy with the outcome for you to blame them (potentially). I get that, however, I would love it if people stopped sugar coating things. Not everyone is like this so definitely surround yourself with people who will be honest and blunt with you that want to see you succeed. Bluntness may hurt at times but it's better than sugar coating in my opinion. If you know the person really well remind yourself it is out of a place of care or love and not malice. E is quite realistic with me and he always reassures me he just wants me to be happy. He gives me both perspectives the good and the bad, but at the end of the day I have try and the mistakes/successes have to be mine! I'm just glad I have him as an extra voice of reason.
Regardless of how uncertain I feel at least I have casted a larger net than what I was initially going to. I wasn't going to apply to doctoral programs but I applied to 3 to see what happens. I know I would regret it if I didn't at least try. It terrifies me how I'll deliberate in the rare chance that I do get accepted. However, having options at the end of the day is better than no options. Don't be afraid to try different options (even the options you didn't consider or feel insecure about) because you never know what will happen.
Exploration is also great if you're uncertain about what you want to do. You can't cross it off until you experience it firsthand unless you know there's a certain job or subject that makes you miserable. This is the time to make mistakes especially if you're going to be just graduating out of high school. I definitely recommend signing up for classes you've always been interested in but never had an opportunity to take while you were in HS. Also join any clubs or extracurriculars that you were hesitant to join or your HS never offered. For example, I was always interested in anthropology/psychology and I took a couple of those classes straight away. I wanted to double with anthropology but I ended up settling for a minor.
In terms of finding motivation to study definitely focus on how far you've reached so far in school. You wouldn't want a your efforts to go to waste last minute. Visualize your future and create realistic long and short term goals for yourself (that includes realistic deadlines)! Some people have found checklists or bullet journaling (doesn't have to be super fancy/artsy) a great way to keep themselves accountable and finish their short/long term goals. It is quite satisfying to check things off. Also if you tend to be forgetful put things on your phone calendar too with notifications staggered in advance you can be reminded a week, day, or few hours before.
"Pat yourself on the back" for any small accomplishments to positively reinforce yourself. Definitely find small acts or ways to do self care as rewarding yourself some time to relax. This is crucial in keeping up your mental health and well-being. A short simple break I take sometimes is to just paint my nails because I love having them painted. While I'm painting it's therapeutic as I'm just focusing on perfecting the surface of my nails.
Last thing I can think of is to figure out your ideal workspace and time. When do you feel most energized? I know I like working on a lot of assignments during the weekend during the day-afternoon. I tend to want to relax and burn out in the evenings. Some people prefer to work outside in a library or cafe because they concentrate better there. I know that wouldn't work for me so I make sure my desk at home is as clean and not distractive.
That's all the tips I have. Haha, sorry for my mini rants towards the beginning, but I truly do understand your frustration. You're not alone and I'm sure some of your classmates probably do feel the same. I have classmates too who are uncertain about what to do after undergraduate. There's also careers where experience matters more than your major. That's true in certain fields since they look for skills and experience rather than your chosen undergrad major. Take care of yourself first and foremost. I wish you the best of luck! I'm sure you can get things done when you put your mind to it! 💛💛💛 Let me know if you ever need anything else!

June Lavellan x Dorian Pavus (College AU), for @lyrium-lovesong @apostatetabris and @dadrunkwriting
June freezes as a hand finds itself on his shoulder, entire body stiffening under the touch. Seeming to realize their error, long, ringed fingers and the hand immediately retracts with a quick string of apologies as an absolutely gorgeous man steps into his line of sight. It’s got to be a mistake. Except… he’s using his name.
“June?” So great is his disbelief, that anyone at this party might know or care who he is, much less someone like Dorian Pavus, he can’t seem to swallow or make his tongue cooperate. He nods. “You’re not leaving already are you?” He had been. Truthfully, June isn’t entirely sure why he conceded to the peer pressure and came out in the first place. The room is entirely too packed, the music too loud, the lights… all of it too much. Dorian frowns, and that shouldn’t make him want to stay longer. It’s not enough to overcome the rest of it, however handsome Dorian is, he’ll be miserable if he stays much longer, worn far too thin to even begin tackling the weekend’s tomorrow.
“I- would you mind going somewhere a bit quieter for a moment,” he asks, voice somehow still honey sweet while trying to compete with the din behind them. “Thank you,” Dorian smiles, nodding as they make their way out to the library, drawing the doors closed behind them. “I won’t keep you long if you were hoping to leave. But I was actually hoping to ask for your thoughts on a paper I’ve been working on. I’ll admit I never really expected to bump into you here.”
“Me,” June blurts out, eyes wide. “I don’t know anything about magic.”
“No,” Dorian concedes, “but you’re light-years ahead of anyone else in the Anthropology department, most of the professors included, and it could do with a bit more culture and history to bolster it, to be honest. Besides, I’ve been working on this too long, I could use a fresh pair of eyes on it.”
June fights the urge to blush at the compliment, then to frown with the thought that, Dorian is one more in a long line of students and peers seeking to use or only interested in him for his breadth of knowledge. He’s too quiet, awkward, too plain for it to be anything else. He can’t dance. Not really. Doesn’t even like it all that much, but for a moment… For just a moment, the thought of being asked to dance by the most handsome and sought after man in the room, the only guy who’s ever managed to divert his attention away from his books and studies, had been as thrilling as it was terrifying. Because Dorian is brilliant, he could pretend otherwise like so many do, rest on his laurels and coast on his looks, but he doesn’t. He works every bit as hard as June does, and like him, seems to relish learning and exploring new things. Unlike June, however, Dorian has a much better handle on the more social aspects of it all, or at the very least, bluffing his way through it in a way June is positive he never could.
“Sure,” June agrees with a nod, because it’s still something, at least.
“Really?” Dorian sounds so surprised, June isn’t quite sure how to reply. Like there was some part of him that genuinely believed he might turn him down. As if he could.
“Yeah,” June croaks, nodding and swallowing down on the lump that’s suddenly formed in his throat. “Do you have your phone? I’ll give you my email address.” June waits to give it to him, only to fumble as Dorian unlocks the device only to hand it over to him.
“You can add your number too if you’re so inclined,” Dorian offers cheerily, and June nearly drops it, before Dorian’s hands catch his own and the phone. He’s not terribly good at these things, but he’s admired Dorian from afar long enough to recognize he’s flirting.
“You don’t have to do that,” June manages softly, shaking his head with a slight frown. “Flirt with me,” he adds.
“Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I know I shouldn’t have- I really would appreciate your help with the paper. I don’t want to make things awkward. It’s just-”
“I mean, I would be happy to help review what you’ve got regardless, you don’t have to-” June interrupts, looking at the floor as he carefully hands his phone back to him, pulling his hands out of Dorian’s.
“The paper has nothing to do with the flirting, I assure you,” Dorian interrupts, chuckling a little as June’s head snaps up in surprise. “Well, maybe as a conversation starter, but... If it’s unwelcome-” June doesn’t think he could speak now if he wanted to, settling instead for a furious shake of his head.
“It’s not,” he manages finally. “Just… unexpected.”
“Really? After three semesters of me choosing seats specifically just so I could look over and see you whenever the professor's got to droning on?”
“W-what?” Could that really be true?
“You are adorable.”
“Um, right,” June blushes. “Er, could I have that back for a second,” the elf manages, gesturing to Dorian’s phone once more, adding his number to the new contact he’s made and thrusting it back into his hands before his nerves can get the better of him. Dorian checks it, and beams.
“So…” he drawls in a voice that’s more seductive than anyone’s should have any right to be. “Should I email you my paper, then suggest we meet somewhere for coffee to go over it where we completely forget to talk about it, necessitating a follow-up, or two?”
“That sounds unnecessarily complicated,” June blurts out. He waits for the scolding he’s come to expect from others for being too direct, but Dorian just laughs. Genuinely laughs. And he’s pretty sure it’s not, in fact, at his expense.
“It does, doesn’t it,” he smiles, shaking his head as he pockets his phone once more. “Well, then Mister Lavellan, how about a dance before you go until we can firm up a proper date, and I email you the paper when I get back to my room this evening?”
“Uh-” June hesitates at the proffered hand in front of him. “Here?”
“Unless you’d prefer to return to the throng.”
“No.” Definitely not.
“As I suspected,” Dorian nods. “Not, that I wouldn’t be thrilled to be seen with you and be the talk of the evening.”
“As if you aren’t anyway,” June replies, smiling through the blush creeping up his face.
“You wound me,” he smiles, clutching his breast dramatically, but there’s a smile at the corners of his mouth and in the lines at his eyes.
“So?”
“I’m not very good,” June offers, feeling it’s better to get things out of the way beforehand.
“Nonsense,” Dorian smiles, waving his free hand dismissively as he takes June’s in his. “I’m not expecting a tango or anything. Just make it up as you go and do your best not to step on my feet. Most of the music they’ve been playing is dreadful anyway.”
“Then why would you want to dance,” June manages puzzled, nearly stopping the pair of them where they’ve begun spinning in a lazy circle, their hands on one another’s shoulders and hips.
“It’s fun. And because it’s with you.” June wants to be suspicious. He feels like he should be. Like he must be reading all of this wrong. That he must be dreaming, though he’s never really remembered any with any clarity, certainly none like this before. But the silvery eyes that stare up into his look entirely earnest. Teasing isn’t exactly something that comes naturally to him, but for Dorian, for an already unbelievable night that could have gone so differently, June thinks he’ll try.
“You wouldn’t happen to be buttering me up so I’m kinder with my remarks on your paper, would you?”
“Absolutely,” Dorian chuckles softly, a gentle squeeze of his shoulder that makes June’s entire body flood with warmth and a tingling sensation. “Is it working?”
“Maybe,” June admits softly, as the song drifting in through the door slowly fades and the pair of them slow to stop.
“In all seriousness,” Dorian offers, straightening up once more, and slowly letting go of June, hand slipping down to gently clasp one of his. “I can take it. Your critiques. Your candor is one of the things I’ve admired about you. So, don’t feel like you have to filter or soften whatever you have to say, about my work. About anything. Let’s get what is possibly my worst attempts at a meet-cute and flirting out of the way and forgotten so we can never speak of it again and move on to me telling you all the other things I appreciate about you without there being any possible ulterior motives.”
“Alright,” June nods, smiling a little, even as Dorian finally lets go of his hand again, turning back to the library doors behind which the rest of the party continues without them.
“Oh, and, June? Thank you for the dance,” Dorian winks.
Creators, what has he gotten himself into?

Regarding Dayak
Tumblr media
Dayak’s an interesting character, and I feel like people don’t quite consider all of her facets. I made a few posts about this when the pre-s6 clip first revealed her, but, having some time to mull things over and reflect properly, I’m making a proper post about her.
Most people pick up what’s there to glean from Dayak at a first glance. She’s old-fashioned, sharp-tongued, precise and demanding; at a glance, she breathes the stereotype of a knuckle-wrapping matron at a boarding school with all the yesteryearly aftertaste that imparts. She literally carries a switch around and isn’t shy about using it, even.
And this ties in to the likely history of the character. Dayak appears to be a reimagining of a DotU character with whom she shares many qualities: Allura’s unnamed Nanny.
Tumblr media
Like Dayak, Nanny was a stubborn old-fashioned matron who upon meeting the paladins, immediately started to criticize them and voiced intentions to whip them into shape. She’s mentioned as having raised Allura from infancy, which is significant because in DotU, Allura claims her parents were far too busy to ever spend much time with her (a far cry from her VLD self) and the mice were her only friends. And like Dayak, Nanny was a fan of corporal punishment.
However... there’s a couple of ways Dayak departs from Nanny- not just in being Lotor’s governess rather than Allura’s, and a galra.
Dayak and Lotor’s relationship doesn’t appear to be snuggly, but it’s not bad exactly
Tumblr media
Lotor didn’t run warmly into her arms. He didn’t even seem per se happy to see her. But if there’s one thing pretty obvious... this is the third time we’ve seen Lotor greet what was functionally a parent figure to him. And there’s something he does for Dayak he doesn’t do for Zarkon or Haggar.
He drops his guard.
Lotor in front of Zarkon is insincere, fawning, sycophantic and avoids him as much as he possibly can. Lotor in front of Haggar has his hackles up the entire time, is hostile, sneering, argumentative- and that hostility also comes out once he’s not acting the poor wayward son around Zarkon.
In front of Dayak, however, we see a fairly casual Lotor, and one who doesn’t have issues with the idea of her being around the paladins. Again, he’s not thrilled to see her, but he doesn’t respond to her with wariness or hostility- if anything, his biggest response is that he’s embarrassed in a rather mild manner.
And we also get a pretty good hint of why.
Of the three people that raised Lotor, Dayak is the only one who expresses confidence in him. She’s proud of her hand in raising him, she’s proud of him, to the point that she traveled to Central Command from wherever else in the empire she was purely to congratulate Lotor on his victory, and one of the first things she does is sneer at someone for seeming to broach Lotor’s newfound authority.
That’s not a small matter considering s6e1 shows us that many people are incredibly iffy about accepting Lotor as their emperor. He’s done everything that possibly could vindicate a successor to Zarkon’s throne but there’s still active mutinies breaking out over the idea of actually accepting Lotor’s leadership.
And it’s into this context that Dayak arrives practically breathing fire at the idea that how dare someone not show the highest, oldest form of respect to the emperor, and Lotor even questions the archaic honorific she uses.
As quick-tempered and snappy as Dayak is, none of that anger is directed at Lotor, and the fact that Lotor- who’s a pretty jumpy guy- doesn’t move when Dayak’s switch passes pretty close to his face one of the times she uses it against Lance would suggest something interesting.
Lotor may not adore Dayak, per se- as a child he may not have climbed warmly into her lap (or maybe he did, and something happened between them to keep her at arm’s length now) but he trusts her.
And more noteworthy, Dayak voices confidence in Lotor destroying his enemies. She’s not talking about the paladins, who Lotor just warmly introduced as colleagues.
So who exactly did Lotor ‘crush’ on his way to the throne?
Zarkon, mostly. Sendak at the Kral Zera.
Dayak thinks that’s a good thing. She’s all in favor of Lotor tearing down his tyrant father. Which is noteworthy because while we’ve seen many galra characters due to become significant show up in backgrounds of group shots. But not Dayak. We don’t see Dayak until Lotor takes the throne. There could be a lot of explanations for this- many of her trappings could imply she’s herself a galra aristocrat that rules a sector of space- but for me I think the simplest one is, with the other evidence she had no love for Zarkon, the feeling was mutual. Either he got rid of her, or, to avoid his usual problem-solving methods, Dayak left central command.
She might have even left in protest of Lotor’s exile but that’s a bit of spitballing.
Dayak encourages people to avoid pain, even when her teaching allegedly hinges on it
Tumblr media
When training Hunk, he at one point evades rapid strikes from the switch, to which Dayak responds with a curt, but impressed, “well done.” She also, despite blustering up a storm about Hunk dueling her to the death for affronting her honor, just lets him go with an unimpressed expression, suggesting pretty clearly she was outright messing with him.
The objective of palen-bol in Dayak’s mind is not “trust my authority to make you suffer as much as I want, and if you suffer enough you’ll become a virtuous person because you’re afraid of punishment”. That little scene with her and Hunk, and especially that she goes after him again seconds later with “Showing complacency?” gives a very different context to her training.
Dayak’s beliefs appear to boil down to “unpleasant experiences are educational because they teach you how to avoid them in the future- and as your instructor I may present you with unpleasant experiences in a controlled environment so that you are better able to defend against them.” It’s the equivalent of, in the Lion King, Rafiki clonking Simba with his staff and then pointing out he’s learned when he dodges the swing the next time.
And this is pretty significant if you consider her protege is Lotor, who, one of Lotor’s obvious standout skills...
Tumblr media
...is evasion. In every category: personal combat, tactical espionage, piloting, Lotor relies on this ability to smoothly and effortlessly thread himself into the smallest hole in his enemy’s onslaughts. He doesn’t blink at breakneck flurries like those Throk launches in him, because he’s well used to that.
Dayak also has a fencer’s arm- she doesn’t just rap people with the switch in a way that relies on them holding skill. She’s got impressive speed and precision- I don’t doubt she’s an exemplary fighter holding something a bit sharper or weightier than functionally a stick.
This closes a nice narrative hole where we know that Lotor’s a very effective combatant, but in s4e3 it’s addressed that Zarkon never trained Lotor.
So who did? Who taught Lotor to fight- but another precision-based, quick-moving person who fences with a slender one-handed weapon.
Dayak.
And that’s pretty obviously not the only thing she taught him, either.
Dayak is a scholar, and primarily a historian much like Lotor himself
What we see of Dayak’s lesson on Hunk is pretty obviously not about the proper way to hold your elbows when dining with the empire. She opens with what Lotor points out is a positively archaic form of address and when she educates Hunk she talks about what appears to have been the stone age for the galra.
And she does so with nearly religious fervor. This is not only someone who’s poured through dusty history books but deeply enjoyed it, found intense personal connection to this.
And that’s one place we see Lotor and Dayak very keenly see eye to eye- when Lotor recommends Dayak as an expert on galra culture, and Dayak, neutrally and casually confirms this.
History, especially anthropological history, is not a small deal to Lotor. And while Zarkon’s rejection may have pushed him to seek out his Altean heritage, it certainly wouldn’t be Zarkon who would encourage Lotor to seek out whatever he could find in the dusty corners of the world.
If anything, Zarkon would probably dislike Dayak’s field- not only because he obviously devalues anything that doesn’t fuel the empire, but because Zarkon’s done some pretty obvious historical revision.
Dayak is someone who’d know that a golden age of prosperity followed Zarkon’s alliance with Alfor, who would know that Alfor’s destruction of Daibazaal was an act of mercy not an act of war, who would know that between the history of their people that Altea was not the traitor. Especially if she’s old enough to have been an adult in Lotor’s infancy, she lived through that time period, being another galra immortal.
Which would make her a living memory of what Zarkon did to his own people returning from the dead. Which, just our one glimpse of that time period?
Tumblr media
The galra family depicted here looks just as terrified as the Alteans standing around them. These are not people celebrating the miraculous return of their emperor.
Hell, given Zarkon obviously withheld information from Haggar about her own past to flatter the idea that she was his and only his, no pesky connection to Altea... it’s suspicious Lotor even knows his lineage is Altean at all. Zarkon wouldn’t likely speak of his “greatest shame” especially where it would encourage Lotor to move away from him.
And yes, Lotor’s half-galra and by his own admission in s5e4 the whole empire knows that- but as long as Zarkon’s been alive and as often as people within the empire die or are actively killed by Zarkon, it would be easy for Zarkon to curate ranks of immortals who never knew Altea, and then spread the misinformation that Honerva, while not a galra, wasn’t an Altean- much easier for people to accept Zarkon’s attempt to hunt down and kill all of the Alteans if they don’t realize they’re hunting their deceased Queen Consort’s people.
Tumblr media
Furthermore it’s a plot point back in s2 that it’s seemingly impossible to identify an Altean as such without being able to see the skin under their eyes. The surviving Alteans Lotor finds in s6e4 have either assimilated into or created a culture of hooded people who obscure that region.
Tumblr media
And Lotor’s own telltale Altean markings are only visible at Oriande. So there’s really no way to know he’s Altean except if you knew exactly who the Honerva Zarkon married was.
But at the time, that was public knowledge. Knowledge that Dayak would’ve been privy to- because again, she’s a good deal older than Lotor, enough that she was a grown woman employed as a governess at a period where Lotor needed one. And while a governess typically takes on an elementary-aged protege... I’m skeptical Zarkon wouldn’t have shuffled Lotor into Dayak’s care earlier than usual. As soon as Lotor’s obvious needs couldn’t be handled by the doctor or doctors making sure the child of a complicated birth survived.
People are only so much the lessons of their parents and guardians- a good deal of someone is their inherent nature, but someone had to have fed and encouraged Lotor’s deep-seated respect of knowledge and history and his tenacious determination to go get it. No matter how curious Lotor is, if he was constantly snarled at to not ask questions, that curiosity would at bare minimum become something Lotor was terrified of expressing.
But someone, in the face of Zarkon and Haggar’s treatment of Lotor, instilled in him the idea that he didn’t deserve to be hurt- that the ability to evade pain is a virtue. That history is valuable, even vital to the development of a good person.
And considering, again, the nearly terrifying fervor and energy Dayak puts into recounting galra history... I’m just saying it wouldn’t seem out of her established character if she’d been someone to functionally commit treason by telling Lotor a more accurate perception of Altea than Zarkon’s propaganda, and his own connection to the place.
Because again, Lotor’s not necessarily thrilled by Dayak, but he trusts her, and his dry “so, to what do we owe the honor?” could well be him feeling as if she wasn’t there for him during the exile, or simply just they’ve grown distant after years of separation leaving Lotor uncomfortable with the rather intimate and vulnerable angle Dayak has on him.
Dayak was someone I suspected would exist in some form- because given the totality of Zarkon’s neglect and the combination of Haggar not recognizing her own child and the way Lotor views her as a malicious interloper in his life (not entirely undeservedly; she’s yet to really seem to mean him well) someone had to have filled that void in Lotor’s life for him to have come out even as modestly well-adjusted as he did.
